What does a wedding look like when you have to rewrite some of the traditions? Two couples tell Natasha Radmehr about planning a wedding that truly reflects who you are
“Our mums walked us down the aisle”
J “We were able to fully tailor every aspect of the ceremony, introducing readings, drinking from a quaich, handfasting and writing our own vows”
ames Huddleston and Drew Gibson married last July at Culcreuch Castle in a humanist ceremony conducted by Laura Baird from the Humanist Fellowship of Scotland. “It was important for us to have a personal ceremony that reflected us both as individuals and as a couple,” says James. “We were able to fully tailor every aspect of the ceremony, introducing readings, drinking from a quaich, handfasting and writing our own vows, which we kept secret from each other until the day.” The couple say that because many traditions simply didn’t apply to them – there was no bride to be walked down the aisle by her father, for example – it gave them the freedom to plan the exact day they wanted without that pressure of bowing to convention. “For the ceremony we both entered by walking down the aisle with our mums, and they were both really honoured and proud to be asked to do it,” remembers James. “Before they sat down the celebrant asked them ‘Do you entrust Drew and James to each other’s
50 SCOTTISHWEDDINGDIRECTORY.CO.UK
care?’ and they responded with ‘We do’, which was really special.” There were other important people involved in the day: Drew had three best men and James had a best woman, with his three brothers acting as ushers, and each person had a role to play in the day from playing guitar to toasting the newlyweds. When it was time for the speeches, they were given by the grooms, best man and woman. “We decided there would be no time to let our dads speak, but I think they were relieved about that!” says James. Rather than keeping their wedding outfits a surprise for the day, the couple agreed on their outfits together, opting to wear their own kilts with matching ties. “The tartans are grey but are quite different so there was a contrast. We did decide to have a matching jacket and waistcoat though and had a really nice day going out to choose them at MacGregor and MacDuff,” smiles James.

Wave goodbye to the middle parting because this year it’s all about having a bit on the side. Maggie Sottero’s catwalk show had a distinctly 1930s vibe, with the models all sporting side partings and brushed-out finger waves. If you love the vintage look but want to bring it up to date, use a texturising spray on your locks (we love Aveda Texture Tonic, £21) to create piecey definition. Refresh classic matte skin and crisp red lips by pairing with shimmering bronze eyes.
Plaited perfection!

The classic pearl has had a bit of a revamp – the way to wear it du jour is oversized and in your hair (with mismatched earrings, natch). But what really makes this look sing is the pearlescent make-up; iridescent metallic eyes, a sweep of sparkling celestial powder across the cheekbones, lips that glisten with a peachy sheen. To avoid frostbite, introduce warmth with a bronzer. And for hypnotic holographic eyes, look no further than Rituel de Fille Celestial Sphere Eye Soot in Pyxis (£30).

t’s been a big year for bridal style – partly thanks to a certain royal wedding – and it doesn’t get much bigger than The White Gallery and London Bridal Week coming together for the first time ever. Team SWD headed to London for the show, ready to get a first glimpse of our favourite designers’ new collections. From the traditional to the all-out dramatic, it truly was a celebration of what’s to come in the wonderful world of wedding gowns. Here are some of the top trends I spotted on the catwalk. Patricia-Ann Young charts the journey of your wedding flowers, from conception to final delivery
THE IDEA
The wedding bouquet starts in the mind of the bride. Before you even think of booking a florist you should start sussing out what type of flowers you like, cutting out inspo from magazines and snapshotting anything that tickles your fancy on social media – even if it’s just a nice colour scheme! “It’s great when a bride has lots of their own thoughts and ideas for their wedding, as it ultimately makes it really personal for them,” says Vicky at Vicky’s Flowers. “If I feel the flowers the bride likes are not going to work together in a bouquet, we could always include them elsewhere on the day!”
“It’s all about creating the feel of what the bride ultimately wants”
“When it comes to wedding flower consultation time, we are aware that brides can be nervous about their upcoming big day so we try to make the first consultation a relaxed one with tea and biscuits!” says Susan at Urban Botanical. This first meeting is when you can have a realistic conversation about budget and flower availability (popular flowers like peonies, for example, are only available for a limited time each year). “We also talk about other practicalities like dress style, height, and build of the bride so we get the size of the bouquet right. We need to know about what the bridesmaids are wearing, colour schemes, and sometimes even go as far as the colour of the venue’s wallpaper!” laughs Susan.

FLOWER PICKING
BRIDE MEETS FLORIST
“We choose one flower to centre the look, and then all the rest will complement that,” explains Amanda at The Floral Design Boutique. Expertise and experience will guide your florist when designing your bouquet; they’ll get a feel for the style of bouquet you love, whether you’re a fan of unstructured wild flowers or prefer blousier arrangements, and choose blooms to suit. “Trust that your florist is an expert and that they know what flowers look great together,” advises Laura at Cherry Blossom. “I always try to work with my brides to create looks that are beautiful. So if a bride wants lots of soft, fluffy flowers like cabbage roses but wants to add a Scottish element like thistles, I’ll tell them that thistles have a jaggy, masculine look that will change the whole feel of the bouquet. It’s all about creating the feel of what the bride ultimately wants.” You’ll also chat about the other flowers you’d like for the day, from buttonholes and corsages to table décor and any other decorative items such as floral archways or installations. After agreeing on an arrangement that suits your vision for the day and what is available and in season for the florist, the plans can get properly underway. “Once we choose flowers that suit the style of the wedding and the budget, I get in touch with my flower suppliers. My main supplier is based in Holland and offers me the option of buying direct from the grower which I love. This ensures the freshest quality for our weddings,” says The Floral Design Boutique’s Amanda.
Details + Décor
D A W N O F C R E AT I O N Flower arrangements for weddings are created the day before the wedding to preserve the beauty and freshness of the flowers, and the bridal bouquet is given the VIP treatment. “The bouquet is the last thing we create when doing all the wedding flowers because we want it to be as fresh as possible for the bride, as those are the flowers that will spend most of the day out of water,” says florist Lynn at Make Believe Floristry. “Also, we put aside the best flowers for the bouquet early in the process to make sure it will be perfect for the big day.”
SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED To ensure freshness, the flowers are delivered on the morning of the wedding, which will definitely brighten up your getting ready prep! The florist will usually stick around to check that you’re completely happy with how the bouquet looks and feels when you hold it. “It’s a very emotional moment seeing and holding your bridal bouquet for the first time – for us too,” smiles Amanda at The Floral Design Boutique. You and your bridesmaids will of course carry the bouquets for the ceremony and the photos taken immediately afterwards, but if you’d like to get use out of them later in the day (and save a bit of money in the meantime!) you could repurpose them as centrepieces for the wedding breakfast. Oh, and if you want to partake in the tradition of tossing your wedding flowers, you can ask your florist to create a smaller (and cheaper!) wedding bouquet to throw to the ladies at your wedding reception. “We often get asked to provide a ‘throwing bouquet’,” says Val of Val Hamilton Wedding Flowers. “It’s a great way to have your (wedding) cake and eat it too!”

THE MORNING AFTER After your wedding, your bouquet is yours to do what you like with. Some brides give their bouquet to their mother or grandmother, some pop it in a vase in their home to commemorate the day in the weeks after their wedding, and some have it preserved so they can keep it forever!

Sarah and Adam had a familyfocused wedding day surrounded by their nearest and dearest! G O O D N E I G H B O U R S … We met on Fraser Island
in Australia while we were both travelling around the world. After we got speaking, we discovered we actually lived in the same block of flats in Glasgow at the time, but had never met! L O V E AT F I R S T S I G H T… We were away with friends staying in Lochgoilhead for the weekend and came across the wedding venue. We decided to stop and have a nosey. We both fell in love with the venue and decided together to just book the wedding there and then.
“I went for a laid-back rusticthemed wedding with lots of fairy lights, tea lights in jars, bunting and pastel colours”
H E L P I N G H A N D S … I am really lucky to be
surrounded by lots of people who enjoy planning weddings! I wasn’t too fussy about a lot of things, so I frequently delegated decisions to trusted friends and family members.
T I M E T O R E L A X … I went for a laid-back rusticthemed wedding with lots of fairy lights, tea lights in jars, bunting and pastel colours. I tried to keep it laid back and relaxed, and my bridesmaid and flower girls all wore different outfits. F I N I S H I N G T O U C H E S … I wore a diamond bracelet that my husband bought me after we had our first child Emma, and earrings that I had made especially for the wedding. I wore a small headpiece and my sister gave me her veil, which I loved! M O R N I N G P R E P… The morning of the wedding
went by so fast. I got my hair and make-up done in Glasgow, and then headed up to Lochgoilhead where there was afternoon tea and prosecco for us on arrival. We had something to eat before heading up to the room to get dressed. S O N G S O F L O V E … We had pianist and singer
The Glasgow Piano Man for during the ceremony and drinks reception. For walking down the aisle, he played Gracie by Ben Folds, which is a song that inspired us to name our youngest child Grace. During the signing of the register, he played Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay, which is a song we listened to and sang a lot to our eldest, Emma, while I was pregnant.

loves Sarah’s lovely garden rose and wildflower bouquet – so classic and beautiful!
M O U T H O F B A B E S … My favourite memory from the speeches was my daughter Emma. She was laughing her head off in all the right places, despite not understanding what anybody was saying and just generally entertaining everybody! She has a very fun character that we love so much. D A N C I N G Q U E E N … We had The Mac Bros play
for our evening reception, who were once on The Voice! I don’t think I moved off the dancefloor all night. I loved dancing with all my brothers and sisters who I don’t get to see so much because we all live in different parts of the world. It made me really happy to have us all together! What’s more patriotic than getting the chance to wear your family tartan? Walker Slater’s London Covent Garden manager, Alex Robertson, made sure to really show off his family tartan at his dad’s wedding by wearing his grandfather’s ancient Robertson tartan kilt. Walker Slater then specially created Robertson tartan trews for his grandfather. We think they look ace.

I

remember pulling up to the big car park in Luss in a coach when I was just seven or eight, with a plastic bag full of homemade sandwiches, ready for a summer’s day picnic on the long beach of the village. Of course, Luss was heaving with tourists, because Scottish soap opera Take the High Road was filmed there in the 80s, 90s and early 00s; visitors peeked in the curtained windows of the cottages hoping for a glimpse of Mrs Mack. Revisiting for the first time a few years ago, those nostalgic memories came flooding back, securing Luss on Loch Lomond as one of my favourite places to visit in the world. I was staying at the newly refurbished Loch Lomond Arms Hotel in the heart of the village; a traditional country pub with rooms and a restaurant headed up by an award-winning head chef. Looks are deceiving at first, and it’s not immediately apparent that this quaint hotel – so beautifully decorated in pared back tartans, heathery purples and soft duck egg blue – offers couples who want to get married at Loch Lomond a wealth of options, as I found out on my tour!
