IS IT SELFISH TO HAVE YOUR HEN DO ABROAD? You want your last fling before the ring to be one of the classics. But is it unfair to drag your pals on holiday? ILLUSTRATIONS BY SARAH HOLLIDAY
RACHEL LAWLER SAYS HOME HENS CAN BE JUST AS PRICEY AS HEN PARTIES ABROAD
P
lanning a hen is akin to an Olympic sport. There are many hurdles to get over (trying to confirm exactly who is attending, finding a date that suits 24 of your bride’s nearest and dearest, working to diffuse daily growing tensions in the WhatsApp group). There’s plenty to slow down your hard work too – including unhelpful comments from relatives/fellow hens/Susan at work who thinks hen dos are a ridiculous expense – and once you reach the finish line, you feel you 100% deserve a medal for your efforts. So why not have a holiday at the end of it that you can all actually look forward to? Let’s be honest: whether you stay at home or head to a more exotic setting, hen parties are never as budget-friendly as originally intended. Plus, thanks to the likes of budget airlines and Airbnb, a hen do abroad isn’t always more expensive than one in the UK. If the bride

has her heart set on jetting off to sunnier climes, with a little careful planning it can be done without breaking the bank. The way I see it, if you want to go away with the bride and you can afford it, go ahead. Life’s too short and all that. If it doesn’t suit you or your money situation, don’t go. Simple. Just, for the love of all that is right in the world, please do not say you’ll go then spend the entire time moaning about how expensive it is/how you didn’t really want to go/ how you would never ask everyone to go abroad for your own hen. Way to kill the party vibe. I don’t think it’s a selfish move from the bride (or her loyal bridesmaids) to have the hen do abroad – far from it. Wedding planning can be pretty stressful, and a fun city break with her besties might be just what the bride-to-be needs. So grab your passport, put on a smile and make it a hen do to remember.
NOT EVERYONE HAS THE CASH TO SPLASH ON YOUR DREAM HEN, SAYS PATRICIA-ANN YOUNG

ou might think your friends are totally buzzing for your hen weekend abroad, but spoiler alert: they’re secretly a bit annoyed. Whether it’s your best pal, sister or fave cousin, they’ve privately had a chat with someone outside the group about how there are other things they could be spending that £500 on. But they love you, so they’d never say it to your face. Don’t think of me as the hen party Scrooge – I’m down, as I’m sure all your pals are, for a home hen with all the trimmings. You want a Spice Girl themed party with me dressing up as Sporty when I’m clearly more of a Baby? Sure girl, it’s your big night! You’d like me to go up to a ginger guy and ask to see if the curtains match the drapes? Totally fine (as long as I can go home and cringe about it in my own bed). But it’s such a big ask for friends and family to spend money on a holiday they’ve had little or no say in. Unless you’ve

carried my limp, unconscious body from a burning building and I owe you a life debt, there’s no way I’m flinging in dolla upon dolla to be awkwardly dry humped by a sleazy Butler in the Buff in a badly air-conditioned function room in Zante. Weddings are expensive enough for guests as it is – everyone on your hen has a gift, travel and accommodation to think about, plus an outfit if they’re not a bridesmaid. Before asking them to spend loads on a hen party on top of that, ask yourself how many of them could use that cash for something else. Speaking from experience, it’s so embarrassing to say that you can’t go to a hen party because you can’t afford it. Personally, I would hate to make any of my friends feel awkward about money, and I couldn’t celebrate my hen without any of them. So here is my hen do manifesto: ride or die, never leave a hen behind!

ou’d be hard-pressed to find a spa in Scotland with more beautiful interiors than those found in Fletcher’s Cottage at Archerfield House. It might be located in North Berwick but you could easily trick yourself into believing you’d escaped to a cosy Norwegian retreat; the relaxation area, swathed in a soothing palette of neutrals, has a wood-burning stove, exposed brick walls and wooden beams. If a hygge hen is your idea of heaven, this is the spa for you. There are seven treatment rooms, so plenty of scope to get everyone involved in the pampering action, along with a marine steam room, lavender sauna, rasul mud cure room and private bath huts in the spa garden. Brands used in the treatments include Made For Life Organics, Aromatherapy Associates, Voya, Sisley and OPI.

our years after meeting at a nightclub in Glasgow, Richie proposed to Ellie at Firkin Point, Loch Lomond at precisely 21:21. “He waited because 21 is my lucky number and I make a wish at that time every night. All of my wishes came true that night,” smiles Ellie. The first wedding planning task was finding the perfect venue in France, where they now live. “We looked at multiple venues around our city of Toulouse but they didn’t give us that feeling,” explains Ellie. “The moment we drove into the driveway of the Château de Robernier, it gave us the rush we’d been searching for.” Having modelled in the bridal industry for several years, Ellie had a few key wedding suppliers in mind from the offset, including photographers Craig & Eva Sanders who she’s admired since her first bridal shoot with them almost 10 years ago. But when it came to sourcing French suppliers, the couple hired planners White Eden Weddings to offer some expert help. Together, they helped bring Ellie’s idea for a fairytale wedding to life. Everything, from the ivory and subtle gold colour scheme to the soft feminine décor and gypsophila bouquets, was designed to complement the château’s beauty.

Fiona and Craig had a truly enchanting wedding day inspired by blooms, trees and the great outdoors
H E A R T G R O W S F O N D E R … We met in our first
year of university and were friends for five years. Having time apart after uni made us both realise life was pretty terrible without the other one in it!
“We didn’t tell our guests we were having our ceremony outside”
T R E E O F L I F E … We saw Tullibole Castle in
Scottish Wedding Directory and decided to go have a look. When we arrived for our first show-round, they showed us their brand new Cathedral Tree and we just knew that’s where we wanted to get married. We didn’t tell our guests that we were holding our ceremony there until the last minute. It was a lovely unexpected surprise for everyone! D I Y D O N ’ T S … We had originally thought we
could do the majority of the wedding DIY ourselves but I think we underestimated how much time and work it would take. Thankfully, our florist really helped and had additional props and decorations to fill the space. S P R I N G B L O S S O M S … It was important to me
that I was comfortable and able to dance in the dress I chose. I ultimately went for a dress called ‘Sakura’ by RowanJoy, a vintage-looking style covered in blush lace that looks like it’s about to blossom. W E D D I N G M A R C H … I felt nervous and slightly
silly walking down the aisle, but my dad was with me which made me feel so much better. He broke the ice by pausing too long when the registrar asked if he consented to me marrying Craig! S P E A K E A S Y… Before the ceremony we provided
cocktails for guests, and we also had a jazz band called Viper Swing play during the drinks reception. They were absolutely amazing – people still can’t stop talking about them. F O O D F O R T H O U G H T… We had the starters

on the tables as soon as people sat down – they were sharing platters with lots of meat, cheese and bread, and this let people nibble throughout the speeches. In the evening, we had a hog roast instead of a buffet. W O R K T H E R O O M … The atmosphere was
really great throughout the day, and at night the dancefloor was always full. We only had around 64 guests through the day which was a great number; we got the chance to get round and talk and spend time with everyone! A F T E R T H E D AY… We went on honeymoon to
Mull with our dog Bunty followed by a couple of days in Inveraray. It was very hard to wind down from the wedding, I think we were only just starting to relax when we had to go back to work! SCOTTISHWEDDINGDIRECTORY.CO.UK 205

COUNTRY DREAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIRSTIE ABBEY PHOTOGRAPHY
W
hen it came to choosing their wedding flowers, Morven and Conor had a strong vision. “The theme was very classic country with pastel colours – predominantly pink – but we wanted movement in the flowers,” explains Morven. “We didn’t want perfectly formed round arrangements, so lots of greenery was requested too. A request for peony roses was a definite choice for me.” The couple’s venue recommended Something Special Flowers, and right away florist Jillian understood the brief. “She spent a considerable amount of time with me, my sister and mum to find out exactly what we had in mind,” says Morven. “I had the vision in my head, I knew what style of bouquets I wanted, but showed her a horseshoe-style tableplan I’d seen in a magazine which tied in with my hobby of dressage and showing ponies.” A selection of silver birch trees of varying heights lined the entrance of the marquee, complemented by candles, wooden logs, lamps and vases of flowers. The walkway joining the marquee to the hotel was also lined with trailing ivy, and a rusticlooking archway was fashioned from birch and decorated with greenery to continue that natural look. Morven and Conor were fortunate enough to be blessed with good weather, so they had their ceremony outside beneath the archway. And it didn’t end there. “The tables were decorated with one-metre-high vases filled with pearls at the bottom and a cascading floral arrangement; the aisle chairs were decorated with posies, and we had flowers decorating the banister coming down the stairs in the hotel,” adds Morven. “They looked and smelt amazing. All our guests commented on how beautiful they were!”
Advice from the florist
“If you are planning an outside ceremony, think about how you can re-use the flowers later in the day. Often flowers that are used on archways can be removed and repositioned along the head table, or the aisle flowers can be used on guest tables. Trees, saplings or even tree limbs can be positioned to create a more natural environment and they also look great on the inside or outside of a bare marquee,” says Jillian from Something Special Flowers. “It is also important to remember that florists work with naturally true flower colours, and sometimes it is difficult to get an exact colour match to the manufactured shade of your bridesmaids’ dresses. In this case, we would suggest working with hues of the same colour, or a complete contrast. In Morven’s case, the shade of pink for the bridesmaids’ dresses was slightly different to the colour of the blush pink flowers we were planning to use. To balance this out, we added a slightly stronger shade of pink spray rose which worked perfectly, bringing everything together.” 244 SCOTTISHWEDDINGDIRECTORY.CO.UK
It was created using a selection of summer flowers and foliage: blush pink peony roses, blush pink and ivory Sweet Avalanche roses, green and cream lisianthus, gypsophila, stocks, pale pink rose buds, eucalyptus, pittosporum, thlaspi, and silver birch.

T he Byre At Inchyra Dating back to 1877, the Byre at Inchyra is an awardwinning rustic converted barn venue in Perth. The visible history in its stone walls and wooden beams gives it a whimsical, charming beauty. The team have kept the building as close to the original as possible, recycling the wood from the old roof to create the benches in the chapel-esque Stable Room, which can sit up to 106 for a wedding ceremony. They’ve even repurposed the old cattle troughs, which you can fill with water and floating candles, or simply decorate with your favourite flowers. C a stl e Menzi es Castle Menzies is a 16th-century stonewalled building near Aberfeldy that was originally the stronghold and family home of the Chiefs of Clan Menzies. Over time it fell to ruin, but was rescued in 1957 by the Menzies Clan Society who sympathetically restored it to its former glory, complete with shot holes, original timbers and lots of extra fascinating details. You can hold your wedding breakfast and reception in the stunning Dewar Room, decorated in a lovely Victorian Baronial style complete with amazing views over the surrounding highland countryside. The Old Kitchen is also an excellent chill-out spot during weddings, with its roaring fire creating a relaxing space for those who need a rest from all the partying.

Roma n Camp Ho tel Roman Camp Hotel’s history may stretch back later than any other venue here. It gets its name from what appears to be ancient Roman groundwork near the hotel’s gardens, made even more likely by the fact that there was indeed a Roman fort situated north of Roman Camp at Bochastle. The building itself dates back to the 17th century, and was converted into a hotel in the 1930s. Endlessly luxurious, some of the rooms are beautifully lined with silk while others boast rich oak panelling, and it even has an award-winning restaurant. You can marry or sign your registry is the small Secret Chapel, a tiny stone-walled nook tucked behind a hidden door in the hotel’s library.

t’s easy when hunting for a venue to become obsessed with the idea of marrying in a castle – especially in Scotland where there are so many to choose from. Thing is, if you develop tunnel vision in your quest for turrets (aka turret vision), you run the risk of overlooking Scotland’s other historic venues, many of which are just as majestic as their more fairytale-sounding counterparts. A prime example is Hopetoun House. This grand stately home in South Queensferry is one of Scotland’s finest luxury wedding venues, and when I visit with my pal we both say ‘wow’ in unison the minute we catch sight of its imposing façade. Built in the 1600s, Hopetoun was designed by William Bruce and then remodelled by William Adam, so it’s an architectural marvel. It’s been home to the Hope family for over three centuries and is a popular tourist attraction too; people travel from far and wide for guided tours of the house, which is decorated lavishly with period furniture, paintings and tapestries.
PICTURE PERFECT Ceremonies take place in the house’s adjoining Adam Stables – a gorgeous, airy space with room for 180 guests – or outside in the lush grounds. Guests can then mill around outdoors, or even take a tour of the house (small groups of 25 at a time only), which is a novel way to keep them entertained while you’re getting your snaps taken. Speaking of which, the photo opportunities here are plentiful. It’s a photographer’s dream.

Once your guests have tired themselves out they can take a breather in the Tapestry Room next door, which has a break-out bar, and if you fancy going all-out then you should do so with fireworks.
