Flicking through your parents’ wedding album, chances are you’ll find page after page of overly posed family shots, complete with rabbit-caught-in-the-headlights stares directly into the camera lens. This is a style of wedding photography that has fallen out of favour in recent years, as couples turn towards a more photojournalistic aesthetic. “Gone are the awkward poses and in style is a more cinematic, relaxed mood,” confirms Kristin from Struve Photography. “More couples are ditching the idea of the ‘must-have’ shot list throughout the day, for example questioning the necessity of a staged shot of signing the register or cutting the cake – photos that date back decades and are rarely the favourites.” Although you’ll still want pictures with your nearest and dearest, it’s all about capturing the moment in a natural way, instead of a staged group shot. “It’s good to keep some formal family photos in the mix, but more couples want to do their own thing and are ditching the cheesy shots for more spontaneity. Natural and relaxed photography will never go out of fashion,” adds Kristin.

arlier this year, Scottish Wedding Directory hopped on the Ten Year Challenge bandwagon. If you’re not familiar, this social media trend saw users sharing a photograph of them from a decade ago alongside a current pic (cue much hilarity at everyone’s sweeping emo fringes and head-to-toe American Apparel outfits). Seeing one of our 2009 covers side-by-side with our first issue of 2019 was enlightening. In an industry that has come to be defined by – and sometimes criticised for – its seemingly unwavering traditions, we were surprised by the extent to which weddings have changed in a relatively short period of time. But we shouldn’t have been. A recent study by jeweller F. Hinds found that only 31% of people believe that wedding traditions are still important*. Most couples nowadays are happy to bin the conventions that don’t speak to them, and when we chatted to wedding industry experts for this feature, they revealed that even the requests they get from couples have changed considerably over the past 10 years.

hough Kendra now works for bridal store Melle Cloche, the first time she crossed its threshold was the day she visited to buy a wedding dress. “I’m the bride that never left!” she laughs. Kendra had spotted a gorgeous Sottero and Midgley dress online and came across Melle Cloche after searching for stockists in the Glasgow area. Upon visiting the shop and trying it on, she was thrilled to find it looked just as good IRL as it had online. “I loved my gown because it was a bit different,” she explains. “It was a two-piece with an ivory overlay over a nude underskirt, and had lots of embellishment without being tacky.” It wasn’t just the dress that stole Kendra’s heart. “I also just completely fell for Melle Cloche,” she smiles. “It was fresh and fun while staying true to the importance of the occasion, and Lisa and Jacks were so lovely. Once I got my dress I started following them on social media and saw they were looking for a part-time bridal consultant, so I submitted my CV!” Because their favoured celebrant had another wedding on the same day as theirs, Kendra and other half Lorraine (who also wore a Melle Cloche dress) couldn’t get married until 5pm. “I had a bit of a lightbulb moment and suggested to Lorraine that we do a dress reveal at the shop – it meant we’d have plenty of room to get ready separately and that we wouldn’t see the other’s dress.” It was a special moment for the brides, who then went on to celebrate their day at Glasgow’s Gin71. Kendra’s advice for brides-to-be still in search of a dress? “Keep reminding yourself that your dress is for you – ok, and maybe a little bit for your significant other, but mostly for you!”

radition might have once dictated everything about your wedding, but today’s couples have had enough. You’re coughing up the cash for a once-ina-lifetime celebration, so you – quite rightly – call the shots. And instead of a formal day, you want every part of your wedding to reflect your personality, right down to what you wear. But how do you go about making sure that your suit or kilt, or whatever it is you feel like wearing, is unique to you and on budget?
ONE OF A KIND The average Scottish bride will set aside over £1,400 for her dress, and if you plan to allow yourself a similarly generous budget, you could get a custom-made suit or kilt outfit. “The made-to-order service isn’t cheap but it’s a great way to have a truly unique and individual kilt outfit that you can treasure for years to come,” says Craig Halley from Slanj Kilts. While it is a bigger financial outlay than hiring or buying off the peg, you’ve also got the benefit – as Craig points out – of being able to wear a bespoke outfit again and again, which generally can’t be said for a wedding dress! Obviously, the biggest advantage of getting a custom-made outfit is that you get to create your dream outfit from scratch. First off, everything will be made to fit you, so if there are certain jackets or cuts you feel more comfortable in, you can ask for exactly that. And secondly, you’ll be able to decide on everything from the fabric and colours to personal finishing touches to create a totally one-of-a-kind look.

“Made to order is a great way to have a unique, individual kilt outfit you’ll treasure for years to come” At Andrew Brookes Tailoring, the Edinburgh-based menswear tailor, the three-fitting process at their design studio couldn’t be easier. “It starts with an initial call or meeting in the studio so we can get a better feel for our customers,” explains Andrew Brookes, creative director and founder. “It’s helpful if clients bring photos or images from magazines to show what they like, SCOTTISHWEDDINGDIRECTORY.CO.UK 107
PARTY PERFECT
“Mandy and Scott got married at Doubletree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro just before Christmas, and there was a wonderland vibe to the white trees and dramatic lighting,” says Jennifer Lorenz of Jenniflower Photography, who captured their day. “The décor was done by Party People who always do a fab job, but this was extraordinary! One thing I totally loved was the glass baubles hanging from the trees – so elegant and atmospheric.”

Your ceremony should be totally personal to you, so don’t feel you need to go for the norm when it comes to music choices – why not surprise guests with a twist on tradition? “We were asked to play a string version of Daft Punk’s Digital Love for a techno-daft bride walking down the aisle,” says Alan from Capella String Quartet. “We’ve also been requested to play computer game music, from games such as Zelda. It worked incredibly well, and was great fun for the couple and their guests too.”

An old tradition from Orkney saw ale being consumed from a wooden vessel, known as the bride’s cog (similar to drinking from a quaich). Take inspiration from happy couple Laura and Doug (and their equally joyous guests), who embraced the Orcadian gesture during their ceremony – but with a tropical twist! “They mixed up a piña colada and everyone got a straw to drink some as it was passed round the guests,” says Madeleine from Humanist Society Scotland. It’s a great way to get your guests in the celebratory spirit as you say your I do’s!

Let your loved ones spread the positive vibes with a ring warming during the ceremony. This is where your wedding rings are passed around guests for them to make a wish or blessing for the newlyweds. “A ring warming is an opportunity to get your family and friends involved in your ceremony in quite an intimate way,” says Craig from Independent Humanist Ceremonies. “Usually near the beginning of the ceremony, the celebrant would introduce it then ask a best man, bridesmaid or usher to pass the rings to the congregation. The rings are then retrieved in time for the vows.”
Give guests some reading material as they wait for the ceremony to start by updating the traditional Order of Service to include the story of how you and your OH met, words of advice you’ve received from loved ones in the big day run-up or even a funny who’s-who directory of the bridal party.

years together, Chris tried to propose multiple times over a weekend away with my family, but I refused to go outside one evening and then I insisted my sister come on our beach walk. He ended up getting down on one knee in our living room when we arrived home! F A M I LY T I E S … We wanted a self-catering
venue where all the family could stay for a weekend-long party. Pitcalzean House was large enough, had a barn for partying in and was also just a couple of miles from where Chris’s grandpa grew up. M E A N T T O B E … I’d fallen in love with a
beautiful YolanCris fringed cape in an SWD photoshoot a couple of years ago. I googled it and a bridal store in Brighton had put an exsample for sale that day. It seemed like fate so I bought it to complete my Galvan slip dress. S E A S O N A L S T Y L E … After seeing the venue
and deciding on an October date, it made sense to go for autumnal colours in our décor. In the dining room we went with lots of greenery as we were surrounded by woodland. T E A M E F F O R T… We’re so lucky to have such
a helpful and creative family. Chris’s mum made the cake, my brother-in-law’s partner Amy is a genius with flowers, my dad ran the open bar and my mum was involved with every detail. W E D O … In the run-up to the wedding my
biggest fear was fainting during my vows, but as soon as I started walking down the aisle (to David Bowie – As The World Falls Down), I was fine! The rain was bad so we decided against walking back down the aisle to our chosen song and all ran to the shelter of the house instead. S T O R Y T I M E … Everyone’s speeches were
great. My dad ditched his after taking in the relaxed feel of the wedding and winged it! Scott’s best man speech was a highlight; his stories made us feel so grateful to be surrounded by such good friends. D A N C E A L L N I G H T… We asked everyone
to contribute to a Spotify playlist so that they’d hear their favourite dancefloor songs. From dancing to Golden Years to Biffy Clyro karaoke at 3am, it’s a night we won’t ever forget. G O Y O U R O W N W AY… You don’t have to do
