LIP SERVICE Whether you’re looking for the ultimate wedding lipstick or you want to put a fancy beauty prod on your letter to Santa, you can’t go wrong with Tom Ford. Over 40 new cream and matte shades have just been added to the existing Lip Colour collection – Near Dark (pictured, £40) is my new crush.

AUTUMN GLOW It’s that time of year when my skin basically turns blue from the cold yet I’m too lazy to go through with the faff of fake tanning. So it’s a good thing I’ve discovered some excellent no-fuss bronzing products. Charlotte Tilbury Overnight Bronze & Glow Mask (£38) bronzes and hydrates skin while you sleep leaving you with a really natural looking tan. And for the rest of the body I love By Terry Tea to Tan (£55) which is eyewateringly expensive but instantly makes me look like I’ve been for a long weekend to the south of France.

A WRINKLE IN TIME Bobbi Brown’s skincare tends to fly under the radar, which is a shame because it’s actually really good. I first tried it last Christmas when my mum bought me the Hydrating Face Cream (£42), which I loved so much I’d run out of it by March. My new fave is the recently launched Skin Wrinkle Treatment No.25 (£28.50), which I’ve been using sparingly around my eyes on the fine lines that popped up overnight when I turned 30. It genuinely diminishes their appearance.

MIRACLE WORKER The frustrating thing about skincare is that you often have to wait a while to see results. So I was pleasantly surprised to wake up the morning after first using Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant (£25) to skin that looked noticeably more even-toned. I’ve been using it three times a week for a few months now – I just swipe over my face using a cotton pad – and my skin has been clearer and brighter with markedly smaller pores. I love it.

COVER UP I wouldn’t normally turn to Benefit for a concealer (I’m usually a hardcore Bobbi Brown devotee), but the new Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer (£17.50) is ace. It’s really creamy, melts into the skin and lasts well. Apply it with a beauty blender then pat a bit of sheer powder over the top for a flawless finish.

Of
all the words in the English language, ‘scalp’ is one of my least favourite. It reminds me (in no particular order) of: Roald Dahl’s The Witches, specifically the film adaptation where Anjelica Huston peels her wig off to reveal her scabby head; scalpels; and anti-dandruff ads from the 1990s in which actors shook out cartoonish fake flakes from their tooshiny hair. Mmmm, scalp. But there’s really no avoiding it in 2017. Hair companies have zoned in on the scalp as the latest body part in need of some beautification (as if we needed to develop yet another complex), and that’s why I find myself sitting in Glasgow’s Aveda salon, James Duns House, ready to undergo my very first scalp facial. Yep, you heard me. I’m a little sceptical about how much I actually need this treatment, but I decide to leave the cynicism at the door and let my stylist David talk me through it. He explains that most of us neglect our scalp because we can’t see it. We either don’t wash our hair thoroughly enough, allowing product to build up at the roots, or we overwash. And even though the skin on our head is prone to dryness, oiliness or spots just like the skin on our face, we tend to just…well, ignore it. And this can impact on the overall condition of our hair. The treatment begins with a dry brush

massage to loosen impurities and boost the bloodflow to my head. It’s like a cross between having someone brush your hair, and using one of those metal-pronged head massage tools – in other words, it feels amazing. Afterwards, my hair is cleansed (with a scalp cleanser) and shampooed, then David applies a hair mask. All the products are from Aveda’s new Pramasana range, and contain a blend of ingredients designed to balance and protect the scalp. To finish, David applies a protective scalp concentrate then gives me a blow dry. My hair feels so squeaky clean that I wonder if I’ve been a mink all my life until this point. Normally my hair (which is pretty fine) gets oily fairly quickly, but the blow dry lasts for four days – brilliant considering the treatment only cost £10 on top of the price of a regular blow dry. I’ve continued using the products at home and while it’s hard for me to be able to tell how much they’ve changed my scalp or the condition of my hair in the long-run, I can absolutely feel and see an immediate difference when I use them. David recommends that brides-tobe start incorporating scalp facials into their regular haircuts ahead of the big day, but says not to have one too close to the wedding (so don’t do it any later than a week before), as your hair may end up too slippery to style.

Bridesmaids
Once, twice,
three times a bridesmaid
Y
ou may have been asked in the form of a confetti-filled balloon, a sweetly worded card, or maybe even during a drunken bar crawl. No matter how it happens, it really is a very special moment when someone asks, “Will you be my bridesmaid?”. I’ve enthusiastically hollered “Aye!” three times in my life so far. One of the weddings has still to come but all three experiences have been different. And as anyone who’s ever been a ‘maid will know, there are a few things that you should consider when you say yes to your bridesmaid dress… BE COMMITED, OR DON’T BOTHER
Being a bridesmaid means that you’re there in the upper echelons of the wedding party, so your level of responsibility is fairly high. Don’t take on the role of bridesmaid (or even more importantly, maid of honour) if you’re not prepared to roll up your

sleeves and do your bit. Don’t wait to be asked to do something; get involved and offer your services to your bestie however you can. It’s also ok to decline the role, if you have to. I know it sounds harsh, but if you feel you can’t commit to it or you can’t afford it, then explain to the bride your reasons. If she’s a true friend, she’ll understand. MOANING IS BANNED
Groups of girls can be bitchy, let’s be honest. We all know this. Imagine for a second that you’re the bride, stressing over the day dubbed ‘The best of your life’, and the girls you’ve chosen to stand by your side are having snide quips about you in a secret WhatsApp group. Try to be reasonable, step outside your comfort zone if you have to, and be supportive to the bride. She needs you! Also, get along with each other. You may be in a group of girls that you don’t know very well, so try to keep it civil and if someone is being pushy or mean, take the high road. It’s not a competition.

BE A CALMING INFLUENCE
Being a bridesmaid can come with a whole new set of events to add into your social diary. Hen planning nights in, shopping days, wedding fairs, bonding afternoons… if it’s getting a bit too much to handle, be honest. You need to have your own life too! Delegate the wedding events between you if there’s a group, or take time with the bride narrowing down which events you fancy. You can check out our events section on our website for all fairs and designer days near you: scottishweddingdirectory.co.uk/event. YO U ’ L L S P E N D S O M E CAS H
No matter how low-key the bride keeps things, it’s quite likely that you’ll spend some cash being a bridesmaid, even more so if you’re the chief ‘maid in charge. Prepare for that, but also ‘fess up if the financial strain is too much. Prosecco lunches, days out, home and away hens, gifts; they all add up. Think about ways you can contribute without spending money if possible. A scrap book of photos and mementoes can be made cheaply, and is a guaranteed tear jerker! (Like I said, it’s not a competition but if it was, your scrapbook would win.)
DON’T GET TOO STEAMING

In the run-up and especially on the day, be that little angel on the bride’s shoulder that tells her everything is going to be ok. Nervous as hell? Don’t show it. Hold it together for her. Make sure you tell her how amazing she looks at least once an hour. Make a wedding morning playlist of her favourite songs; write a sweet pre-wedding letter telling her how much she means to you; chill a bottle of her favoured fizz for getting ready; have a back-up of her lipstick; take photos of the wee moments; hold her dress while she pees and top up her G+T.
GO HEN, OR GO HOME
As a bridesmaid, the hen do (singular or plural) is your responsibility. This is your time to shine, Bride Squad. Think about what the bride would like to do, what she’d really enjoy, and try to plan little personal activities, like a Mr and Mrs game (record his answers on your iPhone or even FaceTime him to answer live!). If you’re coming up with a theme, make it cool, fun and unique. My friend’s maiden name was Gardiner, so we decided to dress her up as a gardener, complete with dungarees and inflatable carrot, and we all went as things from the garden like butterflies and gnomes. It was definitely different! Equally, if your pal or sister would literally die if she was faced with Juan in a posing pouch then keep that in mind. Having some fun with the bride is ok, but you don’t want tears in the sangria.

If you’re camera-shy and freaking out about the lens being on you on the big day, check out what these models, bloggers and influencers have to say about getting camera-confident
THE BRIDAL STYLIST “It sounds obvious, but standing straight with your shoulders back is key – it shows confidence but also will make your dress sit perfectly. I’d recommend standing not straight on but slightly side on to the camera with one foot in front of the other to show off your fabulous figure and your gorgeous dress. Hand positioning is an awkward one. We all find ourselves questioning where to put our hands in photos but the obvious ‘hands on the hips’ won’t cut it on your big day. If you’re lucky enough to have pockets in your dress then your problem is solved but if not you need to be slightly more conscious of where you are putting your hands. So when you don’t have a gorgeous bouquet in your hands I’d recommend resting your hands either by your side or finding a place to position them – your photographer will be able to guide you on this. Lastly, don’t wear a bra the day before and morning on your wedding day. Strap marks are never a good look in your wedding photos!”

"Photos look better when a bit of personality shines through”
THE EVERYDAY MAN “I always think that photos look better when a bit of personality shines through but unfortunately, it’s not always easy to achieve this. Getting to know your photographer always helps me. You will feel more at ease with someone if you have met them already. Movement is always a good way of getting some great shots. Try to avoid standing still and take direction from your photographer – they already know what works well. Walking or simply moving a little will help to make your shots look a bit more natural.”

LYNSAY LOVES "Being camera shy is completely normal, especially on a big occasion! My top tip for overcoming this would be to always work with a photographer that you feel relaxed with, so that they can capture you at your most natural. If you haven't met your photographer before, arrange a practice shoot so that you get used to being in front of the camera, and used to being in their company. This will also help your photographer get to know you and how to get the best out of you both. Don't be scared to be silly – it will help you loosen up and, as a bonus, sometimes the shots of you laughing at each other afterwards are really cute!”

THE GIRL WITH THE BIG HAIR
MORGAN MCTIERNAN “Body confidence, for me, is happiness and being at peace with yourself. It is acceptance. On your special day (and any other day) believe that you are beautiful because you are! When posing for photographs pretend the camera isn’t there. I find the most beautiful shots are where you are being yourself. You are acting candid and a great photographer will be able to capture your personality. On your wedding day it is all about happiness and this will radiate through your poses so just relax, breathe and smile. Emotion is seen through the eyes so think of your loved one and this will come across beautifully on the camera. One top tip is to relax your mouth and don’t pout – instead, part your lips and smile through your eyes.
In today’s society, we’re all happy to take a selfie on our phones and upload it to Instagram – but as soon as someone else has control over camera (and the angles), it’s easy to lose confidence. To overcome this I would recommend setting up a camera (nothing fancy – your camera on your mobile with self-timer will do just the trick) and practise being snapped in various positions. It’s definitely a process of trial and error but with no one on the other side of the camera there’s no need to feel nervous. After testing a few shots you’ll eventually begin to feel more confident as you figure out what works for you. By the time your wedding comes around you’ll be ready to capture the images you’ve pictured in your mind, and feel confident doing so!
“The most important thing that always comes across in a shoot is confidence. No matter how nervous I may be, I take a deep breath and shake it off because a nervous face will always show in pictures. In order to achieve a great photo it is essential to have your skin looking as best as it can. In the run-up to my wedding, I’ve been going for weekly facials from Justyna at Esthinity Skin & Body Clinic in Glasgow. A good primer is a must (it creates a smoother finish and will help your make-up last longer throughout the day), and foundation that doesn’t have an SPF is so important as the SPF can make you look shiny in images.”

ynne and Kevin were high school sweethearts, first laying eyes on each other when they were just 12 years old. It was love at first sight - at least for one of them. “Kevin says he’s known I was The One since school,” laughs Lynne. “He always talks about a time in English class when he told the friend next to him he would marry me someday.” Fast forward through awkward adolescence, sevenand-a-half years into the couple’s relationship, and Kevin finally got down on one knee during a romantic holiday in Rome. He was actually going to marry that girl from his English class. Throwing themselves into wedding planning, the couple didn’t have to look far from their Erskine home to find the perfect venue for their big day. They said their vows at St Mirin’s Cathedral in Paisley before moving on to Crossbasket Castle for the reception. “[The castle] is like nothing else any venue in Scotland could offer,” says Lynne. “It had everything from the perfect grounds to pristine rooms, a fantastic ballroom and the castle’s blonde stonework is just so beautiful. We loved the fact it felt like a luxury, ornate castle but it wasn’t too large or intimidating. When we walked in, we felt right at home.”

The couple wanted a modern feel for their wedding décor, opting for a jewel colour scheme with metallic accents to pop in photos (“I love pastels but I found them a little too wedding-like and samey,” admits Lynne). Rich red and purple tones coupled with rose gold and marble made for a simple but elegant look, teamed with foliage and loose flowers. “Modern luxe was the description I heard a lot,” adds the bride. “The jewel theme definitely prevailed overall, but there was a definite botanical feel to the day too.” The pair also wanted to make sure they had a wedding which captured them as a couple. “So many people get bogged down thinking about what others might like,” says Lynne. “I think it’s important to plan a day that shows
who you are.” Most of the décor details scattered around the reception were a result of high street shopping trips; everything on the tables, from the glassware to the napkin rings, Lynne and Kevin bought themselves. “I basically spent the two years between the engagement and wedding collecting things I liked and could see us using in our own home after the wedding,” laughs the bride. “Etsy, Ebay, H&M Home, Zara Home and Oliver Bonas all very heavily featured!” P E RSON A L TO U C H
The personal touches didn’t stop with the couple’s taste in interiors. Guests downed bespoke cocktails (the “McGINigle” and the “Two McCann”) and the couple decked out the bathrooms with their favourite toiletries. They even put together hangover kits for loved ones who spent the night
at the castle: “We bought gift bags and filled them with all of our favourite food things, some medicinal essentials and even miniature bottles of Buckfast for fun for a little hair of the dog.” On the day itself Lynne and Kevin were blessed with beautiful weather. They had a Catholic ceremony, something that was very important to the pair, before letting their hair down at the reception. “Once the formalities were out of the way, I really wanted it to feel like one big party,” smiles Lynne. “And it did!” The drinks flowed and everyone spent the whole night laughing and dancing. “We had a lot of compliments about the atmosphere and what an incredible night it was – my only complaint is that it wasn’t long enough. It really was the best day and night of our lives.”
