“Y
ou must know exactly how you’re going to plan your wedding!” I’ve heard this pretty much every day since getting engaged in summer. I don’t blame everyone for saying this – it’s not unreasonable to assume that someone who works in the very heart of Scotland’s amazing wedding industry would know every last detail of their big day plans before they even had a ring on their finger. But the truth is I’m just the same as many brides (and grooms)-to-be in that I’m learning as I go when it comes to wedding planning. It’s one thing to be writing about it, but when you’re actually doing it, it’s a whole other story. Overwhelming is an understatement: there just seems to be so much to consider before you can even get started. One thing I’ve learned in my short experience as an engaged lady is to take it slow. There’s no rush – it’s totally ok to take a step back and give yourself time to adjust to it all before you begin plotting your dream day. Once you’re ready to ease yourself into the wonderful world of wedding planning, there are a few things you can do to make the wedmin feel a lot more manageable. We’ve totally got this!
38 SCOTTISHWEDDINGDIRECTORY.CO.UK
G E T T I N G S TA RT E D Start with the basics: what size of wedding do you realistically want? You might have always known you’d like an all-out celebration complete with helicopter arrival and juggling fire-breathers to greet your guests, or maybe you’ve long been set on a small and intimate wedding day atop a secret hillside location with only two guests to witness your nuptials. You don’t need to be too specific just yet, but having a rough idea of the size of your wedding will help narrow down your choice of venues and set the overall vibe of your day. There’s no point in going to
see your dream venue, then realising after you’ve fallen in love that it’s too small for your guest list (or has a minimum guest requirement, as some larger venues do). It’s not just a numbers game, either. This is an ideal time to tackle the tough topics of plusone etiquette, and whether children attending is a yay or nay for your special day. It’s best to have these difficult decisions done and dusted early on, as not only will it help you get closer to confirming guest numbers, but it’ll also prevent any disputes further down the road.
What type of ceremony do you see yourself having? Consider this early on, as it may influence your venue decision. For more info, see p44.

Steph Telfer

She’s worked for Scottish Wedding Directory for seven years, but digital editor Steph doesn’t feel that clued-up about deciding on a budget…
ow that Christmas is done and we’ve welcomed in 2019 (how did that happen?), it’s time for us to really knuckle down with our wedding plans. I really wanted to get a couple more bookings under my belt before the end of 2018 but actually, I didn’t really realise how all-consuming planning a wedding is until I started thinking about our own. It sounds silly; I’ve worked at Scottish Wedding Directory for seven years now, so you’d think I would know everything inside out! The thing I’m finding hardest to get my head around is a budget. I speak a bit about this in episode one of our podcast, Let’s Get Married. We’ve talked about roughly how much we want to spend, a ballpark figure, but realistically I don’t know how much everything will cost until I’ve spoken to the suppliers that I’d like to use. Rab and I sat down together and talked about the kind of wedding day we really want, and we always came back to a common theme: a weekend-long celebration not just of the two of us, but of our friends and family. How often do we get to spend a weekend with all of the people we love most? Throw in great food and copious amounts of booze, and that pretty much sums up what we want our wedding to look like! We know that this is a more costly choice of wedding, both for us and for our guests, because we’re asking people to stay over for two nights. That means that we have to make sure they’re fed and watered for two days pretty much, which doesn’t come cheap. Prioritising is key. We’re deciding what wedding elements fit in with our vision of the perfect day, and allocating the biggest chunk of the budget to those things. For us, it’s the venue, food and drink, accommodation, photography and flowers. For you, it might be completely different. It’s really important to narrow that down though, so that you can get a clear vision of what you’re willing to spend more on. I’m trying to think of ways we can save money in the short term too. Maybe waiting a while before booking a honeymoon, or getting a cheaper wedding ring and upgrading at a later date. You really need to think creatively about ways you can save money when it comes to weddings, if you’re working to a budget. One thing I won’t be doing is any DIY projects; I don’t want to add any extra pressure to an already stressful situation, and I know that I would be anxious about making things or decorating myself. I’m leaving that up to the experts! The one thing I do before I make any decisions is ask myself, “Are we choosing this because it’s what we really want, or because of what we think is expected of us?”. Make sure that everything you decide on is a priority for you and your partner, not for anyone else, and not because you think you should have it. Of course, we all want to make our guests happy, but it’s so important that you put yourselves at the forefront of your plans. At the end of the day, your wedding is all about the two of you – everything else is just the icing on the (wedding) cake. wanted a more modern look for my kilt jacket than what I had seen in most places, and I also had a particular colour in mind that would go well with the kilt I already have,” says Nick. “The best way to achieve what I wanted was to have a bespoke jacket made, and I thought that my wedding day was as good a time as any to go for it!” Nick worked closely with the team at MacGregor and MacDuff to make the perfect jacket for his big day. “I was absolutely delighted with it, but I was a little nervous getting ready as my wife didn’t get to see it until the day of the wedding – luckily she liked it and gave it two thumbs up!” laughs Nick. tephen wasn’t even thinking of getting a bespoke kilt made until he happened upon Kilts 4 U at a wedding fair. “It was something I had never seen before, and it completely blew me away. I set up a meeting right there and then!” Wanting to match his groomsmen but still stand out, Stephen made subtle differences to his outfit that were small but substantial. “My groomsmen wore Isle of Arran tartan kilts, while mine was a block colour of olive green. But to tie it all in, my waistcoat and the side panels on my kilt were Isle or Arran tartan, too.” Stephen thinks it’s important for grooms to put their own stamp on their outfit. “Your wedding is once in a lifetime, so you have to make it as special as possible!”

But Andrew was great and gave us a lot of freedom when we were thinking up ideas – he has a brilliant knack for making exactly what you were imagining a reality.” Anthony was delighted with the final result, which achieved exactly what he had set out for. “I wanted something personalised, but not too out there. “I
nitially I didn’t want a ‘traditional’ mother of the bride outfit, so began my search in high street stores. However, I came to the conclusion that I didn’t want to look like a guest at my own daughter’s wedding, nor did I want someone else turning up in the same dress. After visiting several shops, it was on my last visit to Catwalk [in Falkirk] that I had an experience which was completely different. My daughter and best friend came with me and, as my sister was to be a mother of the bride two months after me, she and her daughter joined us in the search, making our adventures even more special. We had laughter and tears throughout, always ending the day with bubbles and humorous reflections of our endeavours. For my outfit, I wanted something that I would be comfortable in and would suit the location of the traditional church ceremony, with the reception at city centre hotel, The Principal Edinburgh George Street. Other than that, I was open to advice. As soon as I tried on my dress, I knew. I felt a bit like a bride myself when I looked at the tears in the eyes of my daughter and my sister and I knew our search was over. The dress was a shimmery oyster grey colour, the empire cut and the gentle folds in the skirt very forgiving to my slightly fuller figure. The length was just below the knee which I believe is very flattering for my age and figure, comfortable for dancing and discreet when sitting. This was paired with a short jacket, its three-quarter-length sleeves cuffed and in matching colours to the dress. As I am quite tall, I was fortunate to be able to wear a statement hat, which I was delighted with. I felt confident, feminine, and slightly embarrassed by many flattering comments from family and friends! It was such a relief to hear that my family, especially my daughter, were delighted with my look too.”

P E R F E C T P R O P O S A L … Laura planned to
propose over dinner, however, when she gently brought up the subject I loudly declared I would be mortified to get engaged in public, leading to me being asked in the car outside my mum’s house. It’s something we still have a giggle about! B A C K T O T H E S TA R T… We went to Ednam

woodland animal theme so went for lots of felted animals on each table. The hand-felted creatures were such a beautiful touch. Designing the theme and expanding on it was the most fun part of wedding planning! F A S H I O N F O R W A R D … Laura was set on a
strapless dress that went out at the waist; she found her perfect dress at WED2B in Edinburgh. I was unsure about what I wanted to wear as dresses don’t suit my style. Jumpsuits were right on trend and I knew the House of Ollichon ‘Lowry’ jumpsuit was just what I wanted as soon as I saw it. T H E N I G H T B E F O R E … We had a small
gathering at The Queens Head Hotel for drinks and then we stayed together in Ednam House the night before the wedding. Being together meant we were able to calm each other and talk about how amazing the day was going to be. W E D O … Our outdoor ceremony was short,
sweet and very relaxed. We walked down the aisle together and felt excited as well as nervous. We wrote our own vows and looking at Laura it was easy to say how I felt. V I P G U E S T S … The alpacas were a big part of
our day, everyone loved feeding them carrots and getting great selfies. They wore bow ties for the occasion and kept our guests, and us, entertained. D I S C O D A N C I N G … The atmosphere at our
reception was brilliant; we had a perfect night of dancing, laughter and drinking. We wanted a good mix of classic party tunes to today’s hits to keep everyone on their feet dancing through the night. M A R R I E D L I F E … The highlight of our
wedding was seeing each other for the first time, as well as walking back up the aisle officially as wives. Being married just feels right. SCOTTISHWEDDINGDIRECTORY.CO.UK 287

KINKELL BYRE St Andrews
Claire McPhillimy finds the perfect blank canvas venue with a stunning coastal setting on the outskirts of St Andrews
I
t kind of goes without saying that St Andrews is a pretty town, but despite being familiar with the tourist hotspot, I’m blown away when I pop over to Kinkell Byre for a visit. Its peaceful location is unbelievably beautiful, outside of the town and right on the edge of the coast with postcard-perfect views out over the sea. Rolling hills and fields surround this former farm steading, so no matter which angle you take your wedding photos from, you’re guaranteed to find a stunning backdrop.
F L E X I B L E S PA C E S You can of course get married outdoors with the sea behind you, but the barn itself has plenty of charm to more than match the views outside. You enter through large red doors and down through the main drinks reception space, which has a bar, seating area and windows that perfectly frame the sea. There’s also the ceremony room, a beautiful space with flexibility to arrange seating as you wish (it’s been set up in the round when I visit and feels magically intimate despite the fact it can seat 200). Finally, I reach the main reception area, which is ideal for a proper party. It still has the original troughs from when the building was used as a working Byre, not to mention plenty of room for tables and dancing.
CAROLINE TROTTER PHOTOGRAPHY
The views are breathtaking!
B L A N K C A N VA S The whole of Kinkell Byre flows perfectly from room to room, and because it has separate spaces for each part of your day, you won’t have any lull periods during your wedding while a room is being changed around. It’s also a complete blank canvas, meaning you can style it however you like. When I’m there it’s decorated with greenery, flowers, candles and fairylights, giving it a Midsummer Night’s Dream vibe. Kinkell Byre does have preferred suppliers for lighting and the bar, but you’ll have total flexibility for everything else – including no corkage charges – which means you really can create exactly the wedding day you want. Stay
THE NIGHT There’s no on-site accommodation but there’s plenty of parking and the town of St Andrews and nearby areas (including Dundee which is just half an hour way) offer plenty of holiday cottages and hotels.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS
“My family had to travel across the ocean!”
American-born Corrine and Scottish hubby Andy found a venue with a fairytale vibe for their big day
T R A N S AT L A N T I C L O V E … We met back in 2014
when Andy did an elective in Charleston, South Carolina, where I was living at the time. We were just friends, but I was devastated to see him go back to Scotland. We stayed in touch, and he soon came back to Charleston to intern for a year with a local church. By then, I knew I had already fallen in love with him. Fast forward to 2017 and I had moved to Glasgow to be with him!
“Planning your wedding is supposed to be fun – it doesn’t have to be stressful”
M A R K T H E S P O T… The venue came first and
foremost – we had a tight window of when would work for our wedding since it would require my family to travel across the ocean, so we needed a venue that was available! Glencorse House was gorgeous and The Old Kirk is especially magical – it has a woodland fairytale appeal to it that is unlike anywhere else I’ve seen. M O M ’ S T H E W O R D … I had the best wedding co-
ordinator on the planet – my mom! Andy is a full-time doctor and I was working on my Master’s degree, so my mom stepped up to take charge of all the details, big and small. This was a huge undertaking, especially since she was planning the wedding while being across the pond the entire time! W A L K T H E W A L K … I was so excited walking down
the aisle; I’ve seen a video since, and my dad and I were basically running! About halfway down the aisle I looked straight ahead and locked eyes with Andy, and after that I couldn’t look away. I didn’t cry, but my face hurt afterward from smiling so much. A F E W W O R D S … All of the speeches were so
amazing! We were all crying tears of laughter and overwhelmed with the love in the room. Jordan, the best man, really took his role seriously – ripping Andy to shreds with hilarious anecdotes, making fun of all the Americans in the room, but still managing to be a softy and touch the heart of everyone there.

about planning for us was all the extra details that you would never normally think about until you’re in the thick of it. Why were there so many choices for something so insignificant?! E Y E O F T H E S T O R M … Planning your wedding is
