1 YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO FOR DIAMONDS! Diamonds are still far and above the most popular gemstones to feature in an engagement ring, with many couples loving their timeless quality and the fact that they’ll go with any outfit. “We have many people who admire the coloured stones but ultimately feel that they may get bored with the colour over time so opt for the diamond,” says Karen at McCalls Antique Jewellers. “Sapphires, however, are our second most popular stone for an engagement ring.” A good choice for your something blue! Diamonds also come with the advantage that they will stand the test of time, unlike other gemstones. “People ask about the wearability of the stone. Emeralds are quite

W H AT M E TA L D O YOU WANT? Like everything, wedding ring metals follow trends in fashion and right now 18-carat white gold is having a moment. “Most of our customers feel that the white metals are timeless and there is less chance of their rings looking dated in the future,” says Karen Pirie at McCalls Antique Jewellers. However, it’s important when selecting your metal to consider its longevity and how you’ll take care of it – if you’re not into the idea of maintaining it regularly, tell your jeweller. “We encourage customers in this bracket to go for palladium because it’s a natural white that requires less maintenance,” advises Lesley Elder at John McKay Jewellers. Jeanette Harvey of A J Winski Jewellers agrees. “We always explain that white gold has to be rhodium-plated at some point in its life. A lot of girls are going for platinum now but although it’s quite a hard metal, it will [get] dull. It can be polished up on the machine though.” If white metals just don’t float your boat, you’ve still got plenty of choice. Yellow gold is enjoying a comeback and a surge in demand for rose gold means you’ll find more choice available than usual.

brittle and tanzanite is quite soft,” points out Tim of Timothy J Sharp Designer & Goldsmith. Tim has noticed that currently a lot of brides who do want coloured stones are choosing peach sapphires because rose gold is proving popular and it’s a really good combination. “Traditional stones like sapphires are still quite popular too,” he adds. Kevan at Kevan Scott Jeweller & Goldsmith has also seen a mix in stone choice recently. “Not everybody goes for diamonds,” he says. “We’ve made rings with pearls for some people, opals, aquamarines or sapphires.” Richard Laing, director of Laings, also notes that sapphires and pink and yellow diamonds have all been popular of late.

DO YOU WANT TO DESIGN YOUR OWN RING? Engagement ring shopping is great fun but even with all the choice out there you may decide you want to put your own personal stamp on things and design your own – just like Harry did for Meghan! “We really encourage the customers’ input. In our consultation with them we like to discover what they are thinking,” says Kevan. “Couples can come in and have an idea or a concept but don’t necessarily know how to bring it together so we can advise them.” One of Kevan’s team’s couples have decided on a particular Scottish stone that will make the ring a real stand-out piece. “When people see it they will think ‘wow, it’s so different!” he says. “They came up with this really gorgeous idea and the meaning behind it is mostly to do with the stone they are using. Hopefully (when couples are involved in the design process) it’s an experience that’s been part of their whole magical occasion.”

DON’T FORGET THE WEDDING RING Ring sets are available with jewellers such as Laings designing matching wedding bands to go with the engagement rings in their exclusive Family collection. However, it’s more common to just consider your style of wedding ring when choosing your engagement ring without necessarily buying. “It’s really important that couples consider the design of their wedding band and engagement ring to ensure that they sit comfortably alongside each other and be complementary,” says Richard. While you should have a wee think about how your engagement ring could influence the shape of your wedding ring, there’s no need to make both purchases at once. “We would advise them if they are concerned about the shape of the engagement ring and how it will fit,” says Kevan at Kevan Scott Jeweller & Goldsmith. “They are celebrating the engagement and I would hate to think someone is feeling pressurised. We can say they can come back and get something fitted around their engagement ring [at a later date].”

Often we’ll hear of a bride whose engagement ring is stunning but the setting of it makes it difficult to find a wedding band to match. This was the case for Deborah Gillespie. Her engagement ring has quite a low setting and she needed to find a wedding ring that would fit up against it snugly. “I actually saw Sweet Rosie Jewellery in a feature in Scottish Wedding Directory,” she remembers. “I needed a bespoke wedding ring that wouldn’t leave a gap with my engagement [ring].” Deborah already had a different older ring with small diamonds which Rosalind at Sweet Rosie took the stones from (and added gold to) to create a perfect-match wedding band. Deborah loved being part of the process. “I was pretty involved,” she remembers. “I told her what I wanted and she kept me up to date. We met up two or three times too.” Deborah was thrilled with the end result, so much so that Sweet Rosie Jewellery also designed her husband John Paul’s wedding band, cufflinks for him and the best man and accessories for the bridesmaids. “It was a totally bespoke service,” smiles Deborah.

WEAR THE TROUSERS Ever since Solange sported a jumpsuit on her big day, designers have been including more trouser options in their collections for brides who just don’t dig wearing dresses. A look that screams (or coolly drawls) Bianca Jagger, a bridal jumpsuit or white trouser suit is the ideal option for fashionforward brides seeking alternative attire with a hint of tradition. Wear with sleek white ankle boots or chunky platforms for a 70s vibe.

Perfect for brides who want to emulate Solange!

Look after your eyes “I get my brides on to a good skin routine, especially the eye area. The eyes are the main area that can be highlighted with make-up. Dehydration lines can look awful with concealers and foundations so my top tip is Clinique’s All About Eyes Rich (£27). It deals with fine lines, dehydration, puffiness and dark circles. I put most of my brides on this product and the difference is massive! To brighten up the skin and give it a good polish I love Temple Spa’s In the Beginning (£30). By doing this, your foundation will glide on and it will leave your skin flawless.”

Shape your brows “Prep those brows. Make sure you have all your brow appointments in place to achieve your perfect shape! This will also make shaping easier for your make-up artist on the day too. Your brows define the shape of your face and always make your make-up look so much better when they’re well defined! Also, getting the right skincare regime is key to your make-up looking flawless and really making it last. A good cleanser and moisturiser are essential but a serum is a serious game changer for me. The Kiehls Hydro-Pumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate (£39) works the best to hydrate dull and lifeless skin.”

Hydrate your skin! “Make-up will only ever look as good as the skin below allows it to. Adding a hyaluronic acidbased serum in between toning and moisturising will help immensely to smooth and hydrate skin. Hyaluronic acid helps bind moisture to the skin, ensuring that skin retains the natural moisture that it has, as well as maximising the benefits of your moisturiser. My favourite is Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair (£72). However, for a more budget conscious bride, The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid (£5.90) is a great alternative!”

Consider extensions “If you want to wear your hair up, full of body, volume, texture and curls, grow your hair as long as you can before the big day. Of course, it’s easier said than done but having some extra length and thickness really helps with creating any style. However, clip-in extensions are a life-saver and can be applied to almost every hair style without being noticeable. Nobody will ever know you have them in! You should also use a salon professional shampoo. After all, your hair is going to be a very important part of the day so spending a little extra will do it the world of good.”

Keep calm “From experience the last thing you want to do before the wedding is panic and start getting random treatments you think you need a week before the wedding. Think sensibly! Don’t dramatically change your skin regime. Don’t put yourself at risk. I would see a skin specialist if you’re prone to breakouts and start treatment from a year before the wedding so it settles. Stress can affect the clearest of skin and the calmest of brides! Be good to yourself. Get eight hours of sleep, drink plenty of water, book spa days with the girls with a massage to relax and delegate. Everything else can be covered with the magic of make-up.”

Start exfoliating “A good exfoliator to remove excess oils or dry skin is essential to help your makeup last longer on the skin. You can use them twice a week to help replenish skin and make it make-up ready. I absolutely love Botanics Radiant Youth Microdermabrasion Polish and it’s so cheap (£9.99). For a more expensive one I would recommend Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant (£48). Make sure skincare is being used a minimum of a month before your make-up application. This gives your skin time to adapt to the skincare.”

“Our hands are so often forgotten in amongst skin, make-up and beauty care, yet they do all the work! The skin on our hands is fine and delicate meaning that it is often the first to show dryness and signs of ageing. I use L’Occitane’s three-step daily hand care routine to ensure my hands get all the TLC they need. First, start by applying Shea One Minute Hand Scrub (£16) to gently exfoliate and soften hands. Next, treat with Nail and Cuticle Oil (£14). With 30% shea oil it is super nourishing and strengthening for dry and brittle nails. Finally, wrap hands in Shea Butter Hand Cream (£20) with 20% shea butter – it protects and nourishes throughout the day!”

LE SLI E SN E D D O N MAKEUP ARTISTRY

Boost your nutrient intake “My top tip is about six weeks before the wedding get some skin supplements to boost nutrients and vitamins, make sure you’re thorough in taking off make-up at the end of the day and cut out alcohol as this dehydrates the skin, causes break-outs and makes skin look dull which in turn makes make-up application less flawless. You want your skin to be at its best for your special day so start from the inside out and you’ll see a drastic change in its condition.”

“Our feet spend so much time hidden away in shoes and socks that out of sight is often out of mind. They are never past the point of no return. By investing in a Margaret Dabbs medical pedicure you will transform the way your feet look and feel in just 45 minutes. The bride-to-be should start their foot regime at least eight weeks before the big day. After a pedicure, a home regime of foot care should commence. Use the Margaret Dabbs London Professional Foot File (£24) on dry feet removing hard skin twice a week, follow with the exfoliating foot mousse and then apply the Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion (£25) every day. Make sure new shoes have been broken in, wearing them around the house in the weeks leading to the wedding. Nails should always be kept paint free in the lead up to ensure they are in the best possible condition for the big day!”

AN DRE W DONAL D PERSONAL TRAINER AT ADAPT FITNESS

Cut down on sweets “Be prepared and have a plan. It’s very simple to start a work-out regime or a nutrition regime but if you have a plan in place you can follow it. It makes it a lot easier in the long run. Make small changes in terms of habits. They are easy to get into but very difficult to get out of. When you go into the supermarket don’t go down the sweetie aisle. I think to myself when I go shopping ‘Do I need it or do I want it?’ If in the afternoon there’s a box of cookies in the staff office, don’t go for a cookie, go for a piece of fruit.”

October and, since I’m a teacher, I had my heart set on being married at the beginning of the summer holidays, so we had to get a move on. I got a list of dates our closest friends couldn’t do and enquired to find out where had availability on the weekends we could actually manage. P E R F E C T P L A C E … Banchory Lodge’s setting

and organised our table decorations. They were an eclectic mix of anything from around the house that could hold flowers: bird cages, lanterns, vases, teapots. My brother made wire bride and groom signs for our chairs, and a guest ‘book’ (a whisky barrell shaped in a letter P which guests signed with metallic sharpies!). D E A R D I A R Y… Angus’ brother opened the

with Gordon’s Ceilidh Band from my school. They’re such a massive part of my life so it was really special having some of them be part of the wedding. After the buffet we had Pin-Up DJs until the end of the night. S U M M E R S U N … Between the ceremony and
