We reveal the tips and tricks that all couples should know when planning their big day

W E AT H E R P R O O F YO U R O U T F I T ! Getting hitched outside? Invest in a pair of heel stoppers (check out Clean Heels) to prevent your beautiful new shoes sinking into the mud and getting dirty. Always have a brolly on standby too; it is equally as useful in bright sunlight as it is in a downpour, and makes a cute photo prop too!
Get wedding insurance! It'll protect you if a company goes bust
The dress: for less
For information on when sample sales are taking place in your area, head to the events section on scottishweddingdirectory.co.uk. Check out the fashion news pages (p43) in this magazine too!
Jewel control When getting ready on the big day, put your jewellery on last; hairspray and perfume can damage diamonds and pearls. Oh, and to make your rings sparkle, clean gently with a toothbrush and soapy warm water.

Not only are wedding fairs a brilliant place to find wedding suppliers and pick up inspiration, but they can help you stay on budget too; some suppliers offer special discounts if you book them there and then. The same applies to designer weekends at bridal boutiques!
THE GIBSONS
Want a designer dress without the designer price tag? Well, you're in luck! This time of year is when the new bridalwear collections start arriving at boutiques – generally they trickle into stores between October and January – so many will hold a sample sale to shift old stock and make way for the new arrivals (relatedly: if your main concern is to get a dress none of your engaged friends have, now is the time to do it).
Keep your cake safe Most cake companies and co-ordinators will know not to do this, but in case you're going DIY: Make sure your cake table isn't sitting in direct sunlight. The cake will melt and lose its shape; you could say it'll shed tiers...

You don't have to order your wedding album straight away if funds won't allow; you can always get back in touch with your photographer after the wedding to arrange this. But be mindful of timing, tips Kristin of Struve Photography. "If you're after an album for Christmas, don't wait until mid-November to get in touch with your photographer about it," she says. "Albums take time to put together, and often lab companies have a deadline for final production dates. Plus you don't want your album getting caught up in the Christmas post!"
Save on decor

It takes three minutes, on average, to set up a group photo, so be sensible when planning how many you'd like. "Remember that you and your partner will have to be in all the group shots too," says photographer Emma Gray. "You're much better going round your groups of friends and family members and joining them for a photo, with your photographer following you; it's more natural, more enjoyable, and will create a more modern shot."
Be honest: how many wedding favours have you kept and cherished? Perhaps one or two will spring to mind, but more often than not, they're a waste of money. Either give your guests something they can eat or drink (you basically can't go wrong with booze miniatures or tablet|), or invest the money you would have spent on favours on better entertainment, or extra cash behind the bar.

What’s the secret to a successful marriage? Three happily married couples reflect on their wedding days and tell Katie Bletcher how they’ve made it work
“W
e met in Bentleys in Kirkcaldy one Saturday night in 1983,” remembers Jacqui. “The nightclub had four bars and people would do the circuit, checking out the talent. I spied Archie; his shoes and hair attracted me to him.” After she felt his bum on two separate rounds, Archie pulled Jacqui’s hand and they kissed. “That was it,” says Jacqui. “I told my friend that night I had met who I would marry.” After three years of dating the couple got hitched at Kirkcaldy Registry Office, though only after a quick mix-up… “The highlight of the ceremony was nearly marrying his brother,” laughs Jacqui. “For some reason he went into the ceremony room when the registrar asked for Archie.” The forms were handed over and the registrar asked if Archie was ready to get married. “The reply was ‘I’m George, not Archie,’” explains Jacqui. “So instead of Archie looking to see me enter the room in my finery, I was sitting down watching him.” The reception was held at Anthony’s Hotel in Kirkcaldy and after a meal for the 21 guests who had attended the ceremony, another 200 folk arrived for the live band and buffet in the evening. “There was quite a mix of styles at the wedding as punk was in at the time,” remembers Jacqui. “We have photos of guests with bright red hair, shaved hair and piercings sitting next to old folk. We enjoyed every single minute of it, even when we sneaked out and went down the High Street to Jackie O’s, the other nightclub in Kirkcaldy. It was what we wanted, a small ceremony and a big party afterwards.” Archie and Jacqui celebrated their silver anniversary at The Old Course Hotel in St Andrews then a trip to the Maldives, and they’re now looking forward to their 30th anniversary this October. So what’s their secret to staying happily married? “Continue to remember what attracted you to that person in the first place,” says Jacqui. “Be their best friend and confidante, laugh a lot, talk a lot, make time for each other and respect each other’s views.”

GROOMS
OUTFIT SOS
Kilt trip
You might have worn a kilt before, but did you wear it properly? Steph Telfer decodes the jargon and finds out the right way to rock your Highlandwear
Plaid A plaid is a large piece of material that drapes over the back, and is often worn to set the groom apart from the rest of the groomsmen. The shoulder plaid is easy to wear, and should be passed through the left shoulder epaulette of the jacket and secured in lace with a brooch pin.
TIE You can choose from a bowtie, cravat (this should always be worn with a waistcoat) or a wool or tweed tie.
Jacket There are three main types of jacket:
The Prince Charlie The most formal of the three, this jacket’s defining characteristics are the small tails at the back and the high rise of the front, accentuated with metal buttons. The Prince Charlie should be worn with a three button waistcoat (and never without one).
TOP TIP
Never choose a tartan tie to match your kilt but instead select one that complements a colour in the tartan
The Argyll Less formal than The Prince Charlie (and much more popular these days), this is shaped like a normal suit jacket and is a good choice for a wedding. Pair with a five-button waistcoat, or without one, if you fancy.
Day jacket Normally tweed, the day jacket is much more casual and comes in a wider variety of colours. This would be perfect for a country wedding in a barn setting.
KILT D I D Y O U K N O W. . . there’s a trousery alternative to a kilt. We’re big fans of tartan trews here at SWD. Often chosen by the bride or groom’s father, these would work for the groom too. They can be worn with braces and they’ll go with a short jacket and waistcoat.
168 SCOTTISHWEDDINGDIRECTORY.CO.UK
Kilts should be worn around the belly, just below the ribs at the belly button. This is higher than normal trousers (unless you’re Simon Cowell or my dad), so bear that in mind when sizing. The kilt should sit between the middle and top of the knee cap – no higher, no lower. Make sure the pleats are to the rear and the fringes to the right hand side. The tartan you wear is a personal preference; consider choosing your clan tartan for that personal touch.
Spirit of Glasgow tartan kilt and fly plaid with midnight blue tweed Strathearn jacket, blue hose and rouche tie (hire from £90, buy from £899), exclusive at Kilts 4 U

id you know that Beyoncé has a professional photographer who follows her pretty much everywhere? Not just on tour, but like – everywhere. Family holidays, nights out, just going shopping; Yoncé is always being documented (and then she stores all of the footage away in a temperature-controlled, digital-storage facility. Normal.). For most of us, the idea of being constantly documented is completely alien, which is why some couples get an acute case of The Fear about having their wedding photos taken. “It is a weird thing to do when you think about it,” muses wedding photographer Jonathon Fowler, “being photographed by a relative stranger as you stand in front of your family and friends in a strange venue, sometimes with passersby watching and staring. If you are shy or uncomfortable, it is going to be a weird experience.” So how do you get comfortable in front of the camera – and how, without front-facing cam and the floral crown Snapchat filter, do you ensure you actually look decent in the final photos?

PREPARING YOUR PUMPKINS Pumpkins are incredibly versatile and make brilliant centrepieces for an autumn wedding. To get started, make sure your pumpkins are clean and dry before you paint them. We opted for spray paint; it’s super quick and provides nice, even coverage.
why not try... 1 FLOWER VASE
Hollow out your pumpkin before painting it, then fill with seasonal flowers once dry. Voila – your very own pumpkin vase!
2 ADD SOME SPARKLE Use PVA glue to paint the areas you want to sparkle, then sprinkle with glitter. Once dry, use a dry paintbrush to get rid of any excess.

“We didn’t want it to be overly Scottish with tartan and saltires everywhere”
Grass roots Paul and Rob put a cool, rustic spin on their traditional Scottish blooms PHOTOGRAPHER: KIRSTY STROMA PHOTOGRAPHY
‘R
ustic’ is a popular wedding buzzword, and while Paul and Rob knew they liked that style, they also wanted something different to the norm. “We wanted a Scottish theme, but didn’t want it to be overly Scottish with tartan and saltires everywhere,” says Paul, who married Rob at The Dunstane Hotel in June. Instead, the couple went back to basics and brought it back to what they love about the country they live in. “We both love the outdoors and the use of heather, thistles and vibrant moss fitted really well into that,” explains Paul. “The rustic look came from browsing ideas online and then when we met with our florist Fiona Halliburton, she took the idea and ran with it, suggesting candlesticks and candle holders with bark sitting atop the hessian runner.” Still, when it came to choosing what flowers to use, the guys were a bit lost. “We actually didn’t have any specific flowers in mind. It was easy to say what we didn’t like, but difficult to say what we really wanted,” says Paul. “Fiona guided us, making suggestions to get to the final product that we loved.” For place settings, Paul and Rob opted for thistle arrangements with the guests’ name tags tied on with ribbons, a subtle touch that, combined with the gorgeous floral table arrangements, really wowed guests. “They were almost as mesmerised as us with everything! It was the small details, like the thistles, that made the whole table arrangement stunning,” says Paul. “My aunt fell in love with the wee crates of flowers and she actually took one of these back down to the Midlands with her. The rest of the flowers we took home and had around the house for a few weeks, just reminding us of the day. We still have the candlesticks and use them fairly regularly as they blend in with our furniture perfectly!”
