Fairmont St. Andrews Waldorf Astoria -
The Caledonian This landmark hotel on Princes Street in Edinburgh is a truly beautiful wedding venue, home to the listed Castle Suite which features hand-painted wallpaper, 24-foot ceilings and stunning chandeliers. But what really makes The Caledonian special is its outstanding on-site Guerlain spa – the first and only of its kind in the UK and winner of Best Luxury Hotel Spa in the UK award. They use luxury products from the world-famous cosmetics and skincare house Guerlain, and even provide a personalised Guerlain fragrance which is sprayed on your bed linen and robes. A prewedding pamper session is just the thing to get you ready for your big walk down the aisle!
The setting alone of the Fairmont St Andrews is enough of an added extra in itself; perched high on the coast overlooking the sea and the beautiful historic town, the view is rivalled only by its stunning contemporary interiors, the result of a recent hotel-wide refurbishment project. In addition to the outstanding hotel, they also have two fabulous open-plan manor homes that are perfect for hen and stag dos or the evening before your wedding with your bridesmaids or groomsmen. Each have four en-suite bedrooms and guests have access to the hotel’s facilities and spa. The décor is sumptuous and inviting, and is the perfect place to relax with close family and friends on the run up to your wedding. FA I R M O N T. C O M / ST-A N D R E WS - S C OT L A ND

e’ve all seen the show. It starts with a bride arriving at the bridal boutique (in the original American version, it was Kleinfeld’s) with her entourage in search of the dress of her dreams. The charismatic staff listen to the bride as she lists the qualities of her dream dress – whilst the aforementioned entourage causes chaos with catty comments and general drama – before the bride tries on their suggestions. When they find one the bride likes best, they ask the hotly anticipated question: ‘Are you saying yes to the dress?’ Given the enormous success of the US show, it was no surprise when Say Yes to the Dress UK finally launched last year, giving brides on this side of the Atlantic the opportunity to bag their dream dress while enjoying their five minutes of reality fame.
“I went straight on and applied, not thinking for a minute we would actually hear anything back! When a request went out looking for brides-to-be to appear alongside show host David Emmanuel (aka the man who designed Princess Diana’s iconic wedding gown), Scottish bride Stephanie White decided to go for it. “A friend had seen an advertisement on Facebook and sent my mum a message to tell me to apply,” she recalls. “I went straight on and applied, not thinking for a minute we would actually hear anything back!”
bride-to-be impressed the team and was invited to another interview, this time with her mum, sister and future mother-in-law, who would be accompanying her on the shopping trip if she won. “It all went well and, after a few weeks, we were informed we were to film the show in July 2016,” says Stephanie. When the filming day finally arrived, Stephanie and her family had butterflies. “We were really excited but also very nervous,” says the bride-to-be. “We genuinely never thought we would get on the show, so when it actually happened we were all panicking!” But as soon as Stephanie and her leading ladies arrived at the store – Confetti and Lace in Essex – they immediately felt at ease. “All the consultants were so lovely and helped me to find the perfect dress,” beams Stephanie. Of course, it wouldn’t be an episode of SYTTD without a few differences in opinion being aired. Stephanie had done a fair amount of dress shopping before the show and knew what style she would go for – but her mum wasn’t convinced. “My mum really wanted me to try a ballgown, but I always knew that I would go for a mermaid style,” she explains. Fortunately, with David Emanuel on side, the brideto-be got what she wanted. “David has so much experience in the business; I knew he would give the best advice. He really knew what suited me best and was just so lovely and down to earth,” says Stephanie. But what about the all-important question: did Stephanie say yes to the dress? “I said yes to the dress!” she laughs. The one-shoulder gown by Kenneth Winston, pictured on the opposite page, ticked all the right boxes with its flattering fit-and-flare skirt and intricate embellishments.
SHOW TIME A few months later, it was airtime for the episode. Marking their TV debut, Stephanie had a viewing party at her mum, Leigh’s, house with her family, friends – and lots of Prosecco! “It was girls-only as I don’t want my fiancé Ross to see me in the dress before the wedding,” she says. And with her dream dress ticked off the wedding to-do list, Stephanie has been busy organising the rest of her big day. “We’re getting married in Islamorada, Florida in June this year. The planning has been quite difficult, trying to organise everything from Scotland,” she says. Not only are around 50 of their friends and family flying Stateside for the big day, but Stephanie and fiancé Ross are having a wedding party when they arrive back home. “It’s double the planning and organising!” After her reality TV experience, Stephanie has some advice for other brides-to-be on finding the right dress. “I would say don’t give up until you find the perfect dress. I tried on so many dresses and felt like I was never going to get the feeling that it was The One,” she remembers. “But the minute I tried my dress on, I knew straight away and had no doubt. Keep persisting as it is so important and so worth it in the end!”
Host David Emanuel with the ladies from Confetti and Lace
THE CHOSEN ONE A few months later, Stephanie, who comes from Falkirk, found out that she was through to the next stage: a Skype interview with the casting team in New York, no less! “It was very relaxed,” she remembers. “We just had a chat about the wedding and what I was looking for in a wedding dress.” The

WHY do we... Weddings are steeped in tradition. Katie Bletcher looks into why we do what we do and proposes some updates for modern couples
…give the bride away?
The update
THE TRADITION
Being given away by your dad dates back to ancient times when the bride was literally seen as her father’s property being exchanged for a bride price; the money the groom’s family would pay for her hand in marriage. Nowadays we tend to see the tradition more sentimentally and as a way of showing your dad some love, but some women may struggle to reconcile the patriarchal roots of this tradition with their feminist beliefs.
T ILLUS
RATIONS BY VERI ETTE ILL US TR A
VS
You could mix it up and walk in with a friend or your other half – or even on your own. Newlywed Faye Harland (pictured) chose not to be given away. “Although I’m very close to my family, giving away the bride dates back to a time when women were considered to be men’s property – not a tradition that I or my fiancé wanted to honour!” she says. “My dad took part in the ceremony instead by reading a poem he’d written, which was a lot more personal to us both.”

Why do we...
THE TRADITION
“Being given away was a tradition that neither I nor my fiancé wanted to honour”
…take the man’s name? THE TRADITION
Every religious and secular ceremony has its own variation of the wedding vows but generally speaking there is an agreement to lawfully take your other half and take the rough with the smooth (in sickness and in health). The original Anglican vows required the bride to “obey” her husband, but thankfully that’s not in the most modern form.
Under the Normans, married women were largely surnameless, as they were seen as their husbands’ possessions. But around the turn of the 15th century, marriage was seen as more of a partnership – in the words of English jurist Henry de Bracton, “one flesh and one blood” – and women came to be referred to by their husband’s surnames. He was still the senior partner though.

VS
The update
The tried and tested words may work well for some couples, but writing your own vows gives a real opportunity to personalise your promises. “Amidst the minutiae of wedding planning, writing your own vows focuses you on why you are marrying,” says Humanist Society Scotland registered celebrant Stella Potter. “It’s a great process to put why you love and what you promise into your own words and hugely powerful when you speak them on your day.”
The update
In Britain you can legally call yourself whatever you like (so long as you’re not committing fraud) so you don’t have to take your hubby’s surname. You could double-barrel or he could take your name. Faye opted to keep her own name. “I’m not a fan of the assumption that women should automatically be the ones to change – I think each couple needs to mutually agree on what’s best for them, especially now same-sex marriage is on the rise,” she says. “Ideally we would have both double-barrelled but Harland-Rutland really doesn’t work!”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT? We got married around such beautiful scenery that I wanted to try and keep that country chic feel. My wife India jokes that I was more difficult when picking my outfit than she was with hers! DID YOU WEAR ANYTHING OF PERSONAL SIGNIFICANCE? India made my tie and stitched our initials at the bottom. It reminds me of the long nights and debates we had about how we wanted the day.

After a lot of shopping around (which I never do), I landed on a blue three-piece Ted Baker suit. The shirt and tie were from Charles Tyrwhitt and T.M. Lewin, respectively. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT? I wanted something with character and a different twist. Ted Baker offers this with fun button detailing and quirky linings. It was important that I didn’t look like I was going to work. WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING FRAGRANCE? On the morning of our wedding, my wife left Mr Burberry aftershave in my room as a gift. It was beautifully boxed and the bottle was personalised with my initials!

must take a trip to the vineyards and sample the local offerings, including the sweet Vinsanto. The must-see village of Akrotiri is home to the remains of ancient Thira. The Minoan settlement was destroyed by a massive eruption and buried in volcanic ash, preserving its exquisite frescoes. The island also owes its stunning beaches and hot springs to the volcano. Be sure to take the submarine for an underwater tour around the deep waters. Santorini is a foodie’s paradise with mouthwatering local produce and, of course, plenty of fish. Take a boat ride out to the small island of Thirassia, the remnant of the ancient Strogili island, and home to fantastic seafood restaurants. With its beautifully clear waters, picture-perfect whitewashed buildings and famous sunsets, it’s not hard to see why so many couples choose to kick off married life here. Located in the Cyclades group of Greek islands, Santorini is a complex of islands forged by a volcano, though what remains today is largely a ‘caldera’ crater. Explore the picturesque capital Fira and the three other villages perched on the clifftop that make up ‘caldera’s eyebrow’ before taking the cable car down to the old port on the water’s edge. You can fly or take a ferry to the island and once you’ve landed it’s well worth hiring a scooter to explore the quaint villages and castles. You also
