Wow, I am truly honored to receive this Lifetime Achievement Award. Thank you so much for this recognition.
This award doesn’t mark the end of a career; rather, it’s a celebration of a journey made richer by the friendships and partnerships I’ve built within the Greater Nashville Apartment Association (GNAA). Working in the multifamily housing has been a rewarding experience, not only because of the industry itself but also because it fosters an environment of continuous learning and collaboration.
Getting involved in your local association provides so many benefits, and the connections and knowledge gained over the years have been invaluable.
One of the most significant personal blessings of my career in this industry was meeting my husband, Larry Turner—37 years strong. We met when he was one of my on-site suppliers, and our journey together has been one of my greatest joys.
When I think back on those early days as an on-site manager, juggling work as a single parent with limited resources, I remember the lessons I taught my two children, Nicholas and Morgan. With no budget for a groundskeeper, we took on the task ourselves, teaching them that if something needed doing, we’d pitch in and get it done.
Explaining why we’d pick up litter on my managed property but not the Kroger parking lot was always a bit of a challenge, though!
Moving to Tennessee 56 years ago was an unexpected opportunity. Originally, I worked in Wisconsin as a Medical Technologist and Waste Water Chemist. When I arrived in Tennessee, I discovered my certifications weren't recognized here, so I had to adapt. While waiting to take the state certification test, I took on a job as a part-time groundskeeper, watering flowers at my apartment community. Fate had other plans, though, and when the assistant manager left, I stepped into the role.
That moment marked a turning point—I realized how much I enjoyed working with residents and the flexibility to be there for my kids. I felt so lucky to have a job that I loved and one that didn’t involve toxic waste, medical contaminants, or third shifts!
In 1985, I earned my Accredited Residential Manager designation through IREM, which opened even more doors for me.
In 1990, The Summit Agency in Nashville presented me with an opportunity to sell advertising in the Apartment Blue Book, which later became Apartment Finder.
This venture, through Network Communications, turned into a
partnership with Laurie Rainey, and one of my first customers was Nancy Morris. Along the way, I had the privilege of working with Joyce Wolfe, both as a customer and later as a colleague.
Twenty-five years later, CoStar/Apartments.com acquired Network Communications, leading to yet another transition. At age 60, I found myself looking for a new opportunity, which came when Diane Carter and Mary Bradley offered me a role with GNAA, working on the Statistics Committee. This was a passion project for me, especially after serving on the GNAA board and chairing the Statistics Committee in the past. Thank you all for your patience with my many emails and calls asking for your “numbers.”
Working with GNAA gave me insight into the tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. To Ginny Johnson and the incredible GNAA staff, thank you for your dedication. You make it look easy, but I know firsthand how much effort goes into what you do every day. Congratulations on an amazing Gala tonight!
Three years ago, I began working with the Chattanooga Apartment Association (CAA). The experience has been refreshing, reminiscent of my early days with GNAA. Like GNAA, CAA offers the chance to make meaningful contributions, and I am excited to be part of its growth.
Thank you all for your support, mentorship, and friendship. I’m grateful that, even after all these years, you still pick up my calls, offer advice, and volunteer to help CAA move forward. This award means the world to me, and I wouldn’t be here without each and every one of you. Thank you for everything.
