Let me take this opportunity to salute all of the moms who make our lives so wonderful. There are very few things in this world as powerful as the love of a mother. Loving our moms is not something unique to the Latino community, because what culture does not celebrate moms? However, for Latinos mom transcends the role of loving parent. For most of us mamå or mami is only second to God. This Mother’s Day, honor your mother with the love, time, and attention she deserves. Your life will be blessed as a result of it. Finally, let me acknowledge the two special moms in my life who are my everything, my beautiful wife of 19 years and mother of my children Sarai, and my mom who I watched give everything she could to raise me to be a respectful, God fearing, compassionate, and hard working man. Happy Mother’s Day!

omen generally have different goals than men. While most men want bulging biceps and a powerful chest and back, women are more often concerned with attaining a slim and toned figure that is lean and legs that are cellulite-free, a defined midsection, and toned arms. How does one reach that goal? This is obtained through consistent cardio and strength training regimen. Often women are comfortable with cardio activity but have a false belief that strength training will cause them to bulk up. Due to the fact that women do not produce as much testosterone as males do, it is impossible for a woman to gain huge amounts of muscle mass. If you've hesitated to start a strength training program, it may motivate you to know that lifting weights can: • Increases Your Metabolism: Strength Training tones and increases overall muscle mass in your body, which puts your metabolism into ‘Full Throttle’! • Reduces Your Body Fat: With your metabolism in ‘Full Throttle’ , you will burn more calories (and body fat) every day! • Increases The Release Of Growth Hormones: Growth hormones are a powerful fat By: burning hormone! Heart Health Reasons to Exercise Many studies have shown that more women than men die each year of coronary heart disease. The No. 1 way to reduce heart disease risk factors is to incorporate daily physical activity into your lifestyle. Making fitness a priority with strong workouts can increase your self-esteem, improve your health and reduce disease risk factors, leading to a higher quality of life.

Why is Increasing your Heart Rate so Important to your Health Cardiovascular exercise is important in a woman's life, not only for weight loss and/or maintenance, but for health benefits as well. This is because increasing your heart rate will increase the amount of calories that you burn, along with strengthening your heart and cardiovascular system. I recommend to my clients that women aim for moderately intense exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Great ways to raise your heart rate through interval training is by increasing the incline on treadmills or elliptical, and increasing your speed while training.

Too Busy….Break Up Your Routine Women often find themselves busy and overwhelmed with daily tasks. Try breaking up your workout routine to avoid a busy lifestyle interfering with your fitness goals. If need be try doing two 30-minute workout routines of cardio or weight training during different times of the day. You could also try for even smaller sessions throughout the day, such as a morning and lunchtime walk with an afternoon weightlifting session.

essential to your health and missing workouts is not an option.

Be Creative…Mix things up

Achieve New Goals….Challenge Yourself

Avoid boredom in your physical activity routine by listening to new music or exercising with a friend. Alternated gym workout routines, trying new machines and incorporating classes, such as yoga, indoor cycling, Pilates or kickboxing. Going outside for a run, hike or bike ride also prevents boredom by offering a change of scenery.

Try something new or set a goal to challenge and motivate yourself. For example, start training for a marathon, triathlon or a backpacking trip. If you set your sights on something that you enjoy, you can use that to motivate yourself. Make your goal a part of your fitness routine on a daily basis. Adopt the belief that workout is

egardless of how much we all know and understand that exercise is critical for our long term health and well-being, so many of us continue to struggle getting started with a regular exercise routine, much less sticking with it for any significant length of time. (15-20 reps) • Lying hip rolls / reverse crunches (15-20 reps) The total duration of this entire workout is approximately 30 minutes. Other options for your first workout might be: • Start with 10 squats to a chair or bench. Then go for a 30-minute brisk walk in a nearby public park or around the neighborhood. Finish with another 10 squats. • Start with 10 push-ups, then go for a 10 minute jog around the block; don’t worry about maintaining a fast pace or being able to run the entire way, just focus on trying to get your heart rate up and getting used to the movement. Finish with another 10 push-ups. • Play a game of pick-up basketball, racquetball or singles tennis. 2. Increment your exercise - In order to continue getting results and avoiding plateaus, which often lead to frustration and eventually quitting, you must increase the amount you are lifting, the distance you are running, and or the speed/intensity at which you exercise. This should be done every four to six weeks, but keep track in order to see your progress. Tracking will help keep you focused on reaching goals, and watching your progress keep you motivated, even when you’re feeling like you’re not losing weight. I strongly suggest ignoring the scale for the first 60 days. Our bodies are developing muscle, which weighs more than fat, so you may not lose total weight, but your shedding off pounds of fat. 3. Find other people to exercise with you – Research has shown us over and over again that exercising with a partner helps us to not only stick with it for a longer period of time, but also to enjoy exercise a great deal more. With so many people struggling with their health and weight, and the increasing cost of health care, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a fitness partner. 4. Ask for feedback on your current exercise and dieting habits Ask friends, family and especially

www.nuevoimpact.com

fitness professionals for feedback and advice on your exercise routine. Most people will simply tell you that they are proud of you and that you are off to a great start, but you may also get good constructive ideas to improve your progress. Here are a few things that many people do when starting an exercise program that can be improved upon: • Instead of exercising at the same time of the day every, try mixing it up every few days or every couple of weeks; when working out at the same time every day, your body will be able to anticipate the strain and it will resist the small muscle damage which results in muscle growth. • Lift weights first, then run or do cardio. Most people do it the other way around. Starting with weights first helps to use up your body’s sugars, so that your body will then burn fat for fuel when doing cardio. • Drink small amounts of coconut water, or regular water, during workouts versus large energy drinks or smoothies filled with carbohydrates. 5. Play More / Add Spontaneous Exercise – Once you have spent a few months exercising, your body will be more able to add variety into your exercise, including playing sports like volleyball, basketball, tennis, martial arts, boxing, etc… You’ll also have the confidence to join sports leagues, participate in yoga or Zumba classes, and simply play more. Alternate your workouts for more sports during particular seasons (always maintain at least 1 workout per week even when playing sports) for variety and fun, which will help you stick to your exercise routine and develop a truly healthy lifestyle. This is a great time to try something you have never had the courage to do, but always wanted to. Remember that your ultimate goal is an active lifestyle and overall health and well-being. But there comes a moment when your body hits a plateau, and it seams like your scale is just stuck. This is a common thing in every weight loss program. Mother’s Day

Time management tips for working moms Nuevo Impact Staff The responsibility of raising a family while maintaining a career is never easy. Working moms often wish there were more time in the day to spend with their families or get more done at the office. While there's no way women can add a 25th hour to their days, there are ways to manage your time more effectively so you can get around to doing those things you never seem to have the time to do.

Get a head start.

Perhaps no time of day is more hectic for a working mother than the morning, when she must get ready for work while getting the kids ready for school and ensuring they have a good breakfast. Some moms even drop their youngsters off at school. That's a lot of tasks to tackle before you even sit down in your office to answer the first e-mail or listen to the morning's first voicemail. To make mornings less frantic, get a head start the night before by laying out the next day's clothes for you and encouraging your kids to do the same. Preparing lunches, packing a gym bag and even setting the coffee maker can all be done the night before to save you time and make mornings more relaxing.

Take public transportation to work.

Public transportation may not be available to all working mothers, but those with access to a train, subway or bus might want to take advantage of that opportunity. If you do, you can spend your daily commute catching up with work instead of sitting in traffic behind the wheel of your car. Even if public transportation takes a little more time to get you to work than driving yourself, that extra time can be spent preparing for the day ahead.

Catch up on work over the weekend.

The weekends are a time when many working mothers look to unwind, but spending an hour or two catching up on work on a Saturday or Sunday morning is a great way to make the week a little less hectic. As the week progresses toward the weekend, set aside certain tasks that aren't urgent but can be easily addressed in an hour or so over the weekend. This frees up time during the week to tackle larger projects and might even allow you to leave your office earlier on weekdays.

Prepare or even cook meals in advance. The days of yore when mom cooked all the meals are largely a thing of the past, as nowadays both parents tend to share cooking duties. Moms can cut down on the time it takes to serve up family meals on weeknights by cooking meals in advance. Think of dishes you can prepare on the weekends and then freeze until you're ready to serve. Or purchase a slow cooker that slowly cooks your meal all day while you're out and about. By the time you and your family arrive home at night, dinner will be ready and you will have more time to relax after a long day.

Share the work.

Sharing your workload pertains to both home and the office. At home, don't feel like you have to be a superhero capable of handling all of the household tasks like cooking, cleaning and walking the dog on your own. Share these responsibilities with your spouse and even your children when they're old enough. At the office, don't be afraid to delegate tasks to your coworkers or ask for favors from coworkers who might be able to help.

Managing time effectively is of paramount importance for working mothers. Learning to do so effectively can make for a better personal as well as professional life. (MS)

hether she's still hard at work raising children or her kids have grown up and now have children of their own, Mom deserves our best efforts come Mother's Day. And while traditional gifts like flowers and chocolate might make for thoughtful Mother's Day gifts, those who want to go the extra mile for Mom this year can consider the following unique gift ideas.

Parts unknown: Moms who love to travel and experience other cultures would certainly appreciate a trip abroad or a domestic getaway to a region of the country they have yet to explore. Before booking any such trips, speak to your Mom and ask if there's anywhere in particular she'd like to go. Such trips can be expensive, so adults might want to speak to their siblings and finance such an excursion together.

Concert tickets: Many adults recall the days of their youth when Mom would relax while listening to some of her favorite music on a lazy summer afternoon. Why not take a stroll down Memory Lane and take Mom to see one of her favorite acts in concert? Even if you have outgrown Mom's musical tastes, she will still appreciate the chance to spend an evening out on the town with her kids and some good music.

Theater tickets: If Mom is a fan of live theater then

Mother’s Day

Poesía para Mamá Mamá

A mi madre

En ángel te has convertido. Quisiera ahora poderte abrazar. Te busco, te llamo. No te encuentro. Dime... ¿Cómo me he de consolar?

Hector Santiago White Sox Pitcher

A By Laudir Lugo

pproximately one in 200, or approximately 0.5 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic baseball will eventually be drafted by an MLB team. What happens when you are surrounded by a good family, focus on your goals, and throw a 96 mph fastball? You end up pitching in the big leagues! This is the story of Hector Santiago, pitcher for the White Sox. Hector is from Newark, New Jersey, where his parents who taught him the value of family and focus raised him. Hector says, “my family is very close, and we were always together. My dad used to take us to play baseball and even though we grew up in a not so great neighborhood, I didn’t have time to get into trouble, because I would be playing baseball all day with my dad, and by the time I got home most nights I was just exhausted.” Baseball came easy to Hector in high school; he was the star player. Because of this, he started to slack off on his grades and didn’t take school very seriously. Then one day he was approached by a Major League scout who told him the White Sox were interested in him, but that they only draft players who are committed and focused on the things that matter such as school and family. Immediately Hector began to focus on getting better grades, and he did. Hector made up his mind that he wanted to be drafted by the White Sox, and that nothing would get in the way of this happening. Not only did he focus on improving academically, he worked harder than ever on the field. “I had at least five teammates who I think were a lot better than me at baseball. The difference between them and me was focus. After games, most of them would go out and party or hang out. I would stay on the field for hours after games, just practicing and trying to get better.” Well, it has paid off for Hector, and today he is one of the promising young arms for the Chicago White Sox. Hector realized the importance of helping people and giving back, this is why he started Santiago’s Soldiers. Through Santiago’s Soldiers Hector is helping people with special needs, little leaguers from low-income families, and other worthy causes in the Chicagoland area. His message to people and especially youth is, “whatever you’re going to do, be focused and committed to it, otherwise don’t do it at all. If you really want to achieve something, no one can stop you except yourself. They key is to stay focused on doing it.”

Inmediatamente Héctor comenzó a

Madre Eres Especial

L By: Millie Hidalgo

Inherited Strength T

here is no beauty without ashes, no glory without sacrifice. Strength and bravado - such is the inheritance from the women in our far away past. Take for instance, the women of the Aztec empire. These women are often viewed as simple weavers of textiles and taking care of the home. However, these women were part of the brute work force. They worked as merchants, traders, scribes, courtesans, healers and midwives. Even though it was a society dominated by men, By: women had a great deal of Martha Gines power as well. Aztec women often ran businesses out of their homes, and had a lot of influence in the family and the raising of children. Women who were of noble birth were often used as scribes for the emperor. In the Mayan culture women carried out all of the domestic duties in their household. Daily tasks included the raising of children, preparing foods, raising household animals and making clothing and other textiles. A Mayan woman would follow her husband and help him dig or plow a field with rudimentary tools. Mayan women also played a prominent role in the court system. They influenced state affairs at the highest level. In times of war, her role was to help her husband prepare for battle. Taino natives lived in peace and harmony before the Europeans invaded the tiny islands of Puerto Rico, Cuba and even the northern coast of South America. Taino society was matrilineal. Name and status were inherited from ones mother. Social standing among women outranked men. Mothers and grandmothers of chiefs were especially powerful. Women had significant roles in

meetings and were present on many occasions as gift givers (Well, that explains why I never allow anyone to leave my house emptyhanded). Taino women were also skilled in agriculture. Last, but not least, I would like to bring your attention to the strong and relentless women who survived the Great Depression of the 1930’s. In 1933, Eleanor Roosevelt called upon the women to help pull the country through its devastating economic crisis. “The women know that life must go on and the needs of life must be met and it is their courage and determination which, time and again, have pulled us through worse crises than the present one.” Eleanor Roosevelt gave voice to those women who were quickly becoming invisible. These were women who were widowed, divorced, or abandoned by their husbands. Many suffered unimaginable hardships. In the Mayan All of these women culture women withstood the challenges carried out all of of their times and held the domestic their lives and homes duties in their together with tremendous household. Fuerza Heredada N

But studies indicate that proms are growing more and more expensive, alienating students who cannot afford the hefty tab. Information from Visa says that, in 2012, the average teen spent around $800 on his or her prom experience. Many families are forced to open their wallets to accommodate the prom costs. Tickets, attire, shoes, accessories, flowers, limousines, photographers, after-parties, salon pampering, and so many other Latino Family Lifestyle Magazine

traditions of prom night have started to make this rite of passage unaffordable for many students. Nearly one-quarter of American students are forced to stay home simply because they cannot afford the prom, especially in this economic climate. "I went to a small, private academy with a lofty tuition," offers Marie M. from Brooklyn, N.Y. "The school hosted the prom at an expensive hotel in Manhattan, which was out of reach for me, so I opted not to go due to ticket expense and the cost of getting to the location." Many proms create pressure where teenagers feel the need to outdo one another more and more. From

outside event planners to lavish locales, the parties get increasingly elaborate every year. Some proms go so far as to have bars, ice sculptures, lounges, tents, and multiple wardrobe changes. Other prom parties are at venues several miles away from school home base, necessitating some sort of transportation. This often comes in the way of pricey rental cars and limousines. For students who cannot afford all of the extravagances of the prom, there are still ways to go. While ticket price cannot be negotiated, the choice in wardrobe, transportation and other "necessities" can be catered to a certain budget. (MS)

“Living Large in a Mini Kind of Way” ★★★★★

M

any of you are not aware that the City of Berwyn has a theater within its borders. That is unless you have read my reviews of the steady work this company provides their audiences. The 16th Street Theater, located in the lower level of the Berwyn Park District 2nd building at 6420 West 16th Street (perfect for the Review by: name) just a few Alan Bresloff blocks west of Austin Blvd., is easy to get to and worth the trip. Each year, they follow a theme. This is the 6th season for this company and the theme is “The American Dream”. Following on the heels of their wonderful production of their extended, sold out run of “Empanada for a Dream”, a one man show, they are presenting “Living Large in a Mini Kind of Way” written by Diane Rodriguez. Last April, this play was presented by Teatro Luna ( the only all female Latina theater company in the area) at

24 NuevoImpact May 2013

www.nuevoimpact.com

The Viaduct Theatre located on the North Side of Chicago. Director, Ann Filmer, felt that moving this play to her more intimate 16th Street Theater stage would make the story even more meaningful- she was right. This is a story that needs to allow us to peer into the faces of the actors, who are telling us a story, or as I said in my earlier review stories. The stories are about the women mostly, but unlike most of Teatro Luna’s works, this one includes a man (or it could be two, if you count the spirits). Each of these women has a story and this 80-minute play takes us into their lives and their relationships with each other. The main character is Lily charmingly played by Rose Guccione. Lily is recently widowed. She has a lovely home in a subdivision that has an active homeowners association (of which she wants to be president). Her Husband was ill for awhile and during this time, she hired a Mexican girl, Little Maria (again played by the lovely Amanda De La Guardia), whose older sister, Big Maria (returning Miranda Gonzalez, as feisty as ever) has been caring for Lily’s mother at her house. These are immigrants from Mexico, who have told Lily that they have their papers, but as it turns out, they do not. They are “living Large”, but as it turns out, they are not living quite as large as they would like to. Latino Family Lifestyle Magazine

Entretenimiento Lilly, it turns out has some deep roots as her childhood was nothing close to the life that her Joe gave her. Lily also has a sister, Nellie (played in this version by Urban Theatre’s Marilyn Camacho) a sexy, woman who dresses like a teen and cares only about what she can buy . Her husband Sammy (the always reliable Madrid St.Angelo, who also plays Joe’s spirit in Lily’s visions), a Cuban, trusts no one and intends to keep his promise to Joe, to watch over Lily and make sure she is okay. As the story goes on, Lily, now alone, offers both Marias, and big Maria’s daughter (who we never see) the opportunity to move out of their crowded apartment and move in with her, but they refuse. They are trying to build their own “Living Large” way of life. This is the story of two sets of Mexican-American sisters, those who have been raised in the United States and the others who have found a way to get here. The two Marias, though in order to truly “live large” must obtain a 9-digit number- a social security card. Try to imagine your life without one and the problems and obstacles you would face on a daily basis- that is the plight of many Mexican-Americans, some born and raised here, and yet, the magical 9 digit card is out of their reach. That is the

Latino Family Lifestyle Magazine

Entertainment

main crux of the story, but Rodriguez also touches on relationships between the two pairs of sisters. Lily and Nellie have their set of problems, but the two Marias, even larger. Big Maria, in order to get a job steals Joe’s Social Security card and uses it. Sammy discovers this and stirs up what this could do to their family. Meanwhile, Sammy also finds out that during Joe’s illness, none of the household bills were being handled and Lily, who thought she was indeed “living large” is in a great deal of debt. This story is based on a real life situation, as most of Teatro Luna’s works

are. In fact, many plays that we see have ideas that are created by real life situations in the playwrights lives, but because the topic of this one is very near and dear to Americans, due to what is taking place, this particular play has more meaning to each and every audience member. For those of you who saw the previous production, be advised that Ms. Rodriguez has made some changes in the script and in particular the ending (much happier) and under the direction of Ms Filmer in this much cozier venue, I think the show plays better. Also be advised that while the

www.nuevoimpact.com

show is in English, there are many sprinklings of Spanish, but fear not, if you listen with care and watch the actors and what they do, you will get it! The set, a much smaller version of the original (Jessica Kuehnau Wardell) is the back door of the house, a backyard with a fence and a shed> The lighting is by Mac Vaughey, and once again, works better in this venue. The costumes by Christine Pascual, sound by Steven Yaussi and props by Jesse Gaffney are the finishing touches on a recipe for 80 minutes of laughing and learning about a real life situation- a sort of “Sassy Comedy” with a real life immigration problem. “Living Large” will continue at The 16th Street Theater through May 11th with performances as follows: Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays at 5 and 8 p.m. Maybe they will add more shows (I would love to see Sundays added to the mix)

Tickets (open seating) are a mere $18.00 and can be purchased at the actual Berwyn Park District office at 1619 Wesley Avenue, by phone at 708-795-6704 or online at www.16thstreettheater.org
