LatinoSocial Scene The McDonald’s Hispanic Owner-Operators Association Awards RMHC® /HACER College Scholarships to 10 Latino Students
D
uring the Awards Dinner that took place this week at the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance in Chicago, the McDonald’s Hispanic Owner-Operators Association (MHOA) awarded ten $3,000 college scholarships to Latino students. These students were selected from applicants to the RMHC® scholarships because they demonstrated to have a passion for education evidenced by their academic achievements and a sincere desire to help their communities. The MHOA raised these funds in response to their commitment to increase the number of scholarships awarded to college bound Hispanic students from the RMHC® HACER scholarship program. Although college enrollment among Hispanics has increased, it is still at an unacceptable level. Lower retention and
graduation rates are even more alarming. In many cases, lack of financial resources is the cause. Many Hispanic families do not have access to the resources necessary to send their children to college and the MHOA is intent on improving this situation and thus have a significant impact on their future Carmen Solano-De Carrier, chair of the MHOA Education Committee greeted and congratulated the awardees and their families summarizing the reasons why these students had been. John De Carrier, president of MHOA had the keynote remarks in which he challenged the students to be the best they could be, to persevere in their studies, find good mentors never to take for granted the opportunities they are given and always to pay it forward. He recounted his own struggles to make it to where he is today and offered valuable advice on how
to maximize their years in college. The students were listening because even before the event was over they were already putting to practice his networking tips. Juan Mendez, member of the MHOA and chair of the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance echoed Mr. De Carrier’s words and further encouraged the students to become role models for their peers as well as to always remember that their endeavors have to be rooted in their efforts to be a part of their communities growth. The students that were awarded the scholarships were: Juan Castrejon, Alan Del Rio, Miguel Garcia, Edgar Palomino, Daniela Perez, Uriel Ramirez, Enriqueta Rodriguez, Lizbeth Sanchez, Yuliana Torres and Delilah Vasquez

urante la Cena de Premiación que tomó lugar esta semana en el local de la Puerto Rican Arts Alliance en Chicago, la Asociación de Dueños/Operadores Hispanos de McDonald’s (MHOA) otorgó 10 becas de $3,000 cada una a estudiantes latinos que comenzarán sus estudios universitarios. Estos estudiantes fueron seleccionados entre los solicitantes a las becas RMHC® debido a que demostraron su pasión por la educación evidente en sus logros académicos y un sincero deseo de ayudar a sus comunidades. La MHOA recaudó estos fondos en respuesta a su compromiso de aumentar el número de becas otorgadas a estudiantes hispanos camino a la universidad que hubieran solicitado becas del programa RMHC® HACER. A pesar de que el número de hispanos matriculados en universidades ha aumentado, todavía se encuentra a un nivel inaceptable. graduación. En muchos casos, la falta de recursos financieros es la causa principal. Muchas familias hispanas no tienen acceso a los recursos necesarios para enviar a sus hijos a la universidad, y MHOA quiere mejorar esa situación y así tener un impacto significativo en el futuro. Carmen Solano-De Carrier, presidenta del Comité Educativo de MHOA saludó y felicitó a los premiados y sus familias sumarizando las razones por las cuales estos estudiantes habían sido seleccionados. . John De Carrier, presidente de MHOA fue el orador principal y retó a los estudiantes a ser la mejor versión de ellos mismos posible, a perseverar en sus estudios, identificar buenos mentores, nunca menospreciar las oportunidades que se les presenten y siempre pensar en cómo ayudar a los que vienen detrás. Habló sobre sus propios esfuerzos y dificultades para llegar a donde está hoy y les dio valiosos consejos sobre cómo maximizar sus años en la universidad. Fue obvio que los
estudiantes lo estaban escuchando atentamente ya que aún antes de que se cerrara el evento ya estaban poniendo en práctica sus consejos de cómo entablar y mantener relaciones con aquellos que pueden ayudarnos a triunfar. Juan Méndez, miembro de la MHOA y presidente de la Puerto Rican Arts Alliance se hizo eco de las palabras del Sr. De Carrier y añadió que es importante que los estudiantes se convirtieran en buenos modelos para sus compañeros y que nunca se olvidaran de ser parte del crecimiento de sus comunidades. La hipnosis de carretera, conocida también como “fiebre de la línea blanca” se produce cuando una persona ha estado manejando un vehículo por un tramo largo de carretera durante un extenso período de tiempo.

os viajes por carretera son una “escapada” popular en cuanto sube la temperatura. Las autopistas se llenan de vehículos, ya sea en pos de vacaciones o simplemente para disfrutar del paisaje en el camino. Y mientras más personas en la vía, más riesgo de accidentes por diversas razones. Aunque la agresividad tras el volante, la conducción en estado de embriaguez y otros peligros están bien documentados, muchas personas ignoran lo que se conoce como “hipnosis de carretera” que podría ser responsable de la conducción errática en la vía. Imagínese que está tras el volante en un tramo extenso de carretera, como el de una interestatal. Tal vez le perdió la pista a las salidas por las que pasó, o se pregunta cómo llegó a un sitio en particular pues no recuerda haberse encaminado allí. Tal vez se quedó dormido o distraído. Según la Administra-
ción Federal de Autopistas del Departamento de Transporte de los Estados Unidos, la causa principal de colisiones es la somnolencia y falta de atención del conductor. A menudo, la fatiga es provocada por la hipnosis de carretera. oad trips are a popular getaway once the weather warms up. People take to the roads in droves, whether for vacations or simply to enjoy the scenery along the way. With more people on the highways, there could be a heightened risk of accidents for a number of reasons. Though road rage, driving while intoxicated and other road dangers are well documented, many people do not know about something called highway hypnosis -- which could be responsible for erratic driving on roadways. Think about a time when you were behind the wheel of a car on a long stretch of road, such as an interstate. Perhaps you lost track of the exits you passed or wondered how you ended up in a particular location when you don't remember getting there. Maybe you actually fell asleep or drifted off

of the road. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration, the main cause of roadway departure crashes is driver drowsiness and inattention. Driver fatigue is often caused by highway hypnosis. Highway hypnosis, also known as "white line fever," occurs when someone has been driving a vehicle along a long stretch of roadway for an extended period of time. The monotony of a long drive can induce sleepiness or forgetfulness. It can lull the brain into a sort of trance, and the body is essentially operating on auto pilot while the mind is off somewhere else. Highway hypnosis is most common during the late-night hours when the time of day also plays a role in drowsiness. The concept of highway hypnosis is nothing new. to allow for a variation in the road conditions. Many other roadways are built with rumble strips or other variations in the scenery to reduce the monotony of the road. Highway hypnosis occurs more than people would like to believe. However, there are ways to help prevent highway hypnosis. * Take frequent rests on a long trip to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. * Try not to drive during the hours that you are normally sleeping. * Bring a road trip partner along and make conversation. * Don't eat a big meal before beginning a long car ride. * Open the windows and get circulation going. * Keep your eyes moving between your mirrors and the road to improve conscious thought. * If you are still unable to fend of feelings of drowsiness or some of the other symptoms of hypnosis, pull over and take a long rest until you feel more capable to drive. 2012 study published in the journal Pediatrics found that the average American child is exposed to nearly four hours of background television each day. Background television is when the television is on but children are not watching it. That kids are exposed to so much background television on a daily basis is significant, as numerous studies have shown too much television, even background television, has an adverse effect on children's development. According to the study, background television in particular has been linked to poorer interactions between parent and child as well as poorer performance on cognitive tasks. The study was conducted using a nationally representative telephone survey of 1,454 parents with at least one child between the ages of eight months and eight years old. Children in that age group typically watch about 80 minutes of television each day, meaning their daily exposure to television is roughly five hours. The study also found that children who are younger, African-American or come from poorer families are exposed to even more television on a daily basis, with children from poorer families exposed to television for nearly six hours per day.

Use social media to your advantage. Social media has made it easy to keep in touch with distant relatives, and organizers can use this tool to their advantage when planning a family reunion. Post ideas for entertainment to social media and get feedback from relatives. Solicit suggestions for activities and assign different tasks to different family members who have confirmed their attendance. Use social media to keep track of that attendance as well, especially among those family members who have not yet committed but have implied a desire to attend. Choose a central location. Though it might be sentimental to hold the reunion in a city or town where your family has its deepest roots, such a location might not be practical for families who have branched out geographically. When choosing a town or city for the family reunion, try to find a central location that's accessible to the largest number of prospective attendees. For example, if half of your family now calls the west coast home while the other half lives along the east coast, then a location in the middle of the country is equally accessible for all. This also gives travel enthusiasts the chance to do some traveling while also reconnecting with their family members. Arrange for transportation ahead of time. If your family reunion won't be in a big city with reliable public transportation, then it's best to arrange for transportation ahead of time. Some family
members will drive to the reunion, so confirm who is driving and the capacity of their vehicles. You might be able to get by with relatives hitching rides from their family members to the reunion and other events. If not, you can arrange for transportation depending on the number of people who won't have access to transportation. You might want to rent a small or large bus for the weekend so those without access to transportation can travel together throughout the weekend. Do so ahead of time so you or your family members are not scrambling for transportation come the weekend of the reunion.
Host the reunion when the weather outside is warm and welcoming. Unless you're a family who enjoys hitting the slopes and wants to reunite on the black diamond, then host the reunion at a time of year when the weather is warm. This allows all of you to enjoy the great outdoors, and people are less likely to feel cramped or claustrophobic. The warm weather is also more amenable to activities like three-legged races, water balloon fights and, of course, the family reunion barbecue, which is a staple of many family gatherings.

30 things to do in Chicago this summer Want to make the summer of 2013 your best yet? This checklist is a good place to start. By: Leah Pickett. WBEZ ummertime arrived slightly later than expected in Chicago this year; but thankfully for those yearning to don shorts and sundresses, the wait is now over. With the June solstice came a mass unveiling of open patios, 80 degree weather (finally!) and a big Blackhawks win to get the season started on a celebratory note. So, how do we make the most of the blessed JuneSeptember sunshine we have left? Here is a list of 30 delightful Chicago adventures to keep the fun meter running all summer long:

1. Get on a boat. Take some inspiration from The Lonely Island and tell your friends "I'm on a boat" for real. Rent or charter a sailboat, fall in love with Chicago all over again on the architecture boat tour, or catch a water taxi to Chinatown after work (only $6!)
2. Bike to the breweries. A guide for daylong cycling trips to brewpubs outside of the city limits—including Three Floyds Brewpub in Munster, Ind. and Lake Bluff Brewing Company in the northern suburb of Lake Bluff—can be found here.

The largest annual outdoor dancing series in the United States has returned for a 17th year of jumping, jiving and bringing joy to dancers of all ages. 9. Watch a movie in the park. The 195-film lineup for the 13th Annual Chicago Movies in the Park gets an A+ this year. I suggest bringing a blanket,

A pedicab is a fun, breezy and oft-neglected form of totally green transportation in Chicago. So why not throw caution to the wind and careen down Michigan Avenue like it's 1899?
Navy Pier fireworks go off every Wednesday and Saturday night until August 31; but you don't have to shuffle through a sea of tourists to get a good view. Stretch out on a blanket by the lakeshore and watch the show from across the water instead.

Rollers (women's roller derby) for a rollicking good time at just a fraction of the cost.
17. Practice yoga in the park. Find your center every Saturday at 8 a.m. with Yoga in Millenium Park, part of a free workout series from the City of Chicago that lasts until September. Other Great Lawn group classes include Tai-Chi at 7 a.m., Pilates at 9 a.m., and Zumba at 10 a.m.

24. Sunbathe in Lincoln Park. Read a book on the lawn of the prettiest park in all of Chicago, then walk on over to the Lincoln Park Zoo and see over 1,200 exotic animals for free.
25. Locate an awesome patio and BYOB. Try landing an outdoor table at Tango Sur in Lakeview, Cafe Sushi in Old Town or 90 Miles Cuban Cafe in Logan Square to enjoy good eats, prime people-watching and as many tag-a-long beers as your heart desires.
26. Take a class. Do you have some extra time this summer to learn something new? If so, you're in luck: Chicago has cooking, guitar, pottery, beer-brewing, gardening and improv classes galore.
27. Have a beach picnic party. Take in the scenic views (and avoid the obnoxious Castaways crowd) at Hartigan Park and Beach in Rogers Park, 57th Street Beach in Hyde Park or Kathy Osterman Beach in Edgewater.
28. Experience the Chicago Jazz Festival. This year's fest will take up three stages in Millenium Park, meaning that the sound will be much better than in years past, and the sets even more intimate.

Exercise or Nutrition: Which Has a Greater Impact on Your Health, Weight Loss, and Sports Performance?

any people often ask me, “which is more important, exercise or nutrition?” That is a fairly difficult question to answer, so I always reply back with a question… “what is your goal? Is your primary goal health, weight loss, or peak performance for sports?” While their answer truly does little to affect or change my answer, it does gives me a better sense of how to answer their question, and what to focus on in our conversation. First of all, I find it interesting enough that there are many people out there that exercise regularly, and enjoy exercise, but have no concern about what they eat; just as there are many people out there that eat extremely healthy, and truly enjoy having a healthy diet, yet have little or no interest, nor any desire to exercise. So what is more important, exercise or nutrition? As a personal trainer and fitness instructor, I know and understand the true importance of exercise, and how critical it is for energy, heart health, bone health, mobility, weight management, posture, selfconfidence, and more. As a nutritionist, I also know that what you put into your body affects you on a cellular level (you are what you eat). Your nutrition also affects your energy, heart health, bone health, weight management, and many other aspects of your health, including organ function, immune health, etc… The biggest difference, and the most difficult part, is that the results or consequences of poor nutrition are often not seen or felt for years. It’s a slow process

that has huge ramifications later on in life. On the other hand, exercise often produces results that are seen and felt in a relatively short period of time. The truth is that while both exercise and nutrition are extremely critical, the ratio of importance varies a little depending on the goal, as well as on your genes. For example, if your primary goal is cellular health, nutrition plays a bit more of a role in the health of your cells than exercise does. Poor nutrition can reak havoc on your cells, while good nutrition is what feeds our cells and helps them to perform their tasks. As far as exercise is concerned, a lack of exercise will not truly cause you a great deal of harm, except over the long term with certain issues like bone density as we age, or heart health if you have a predisposition. At the same time, know that exercise does enhance the health of many cells, especially when combined with proper nutrition. If your primary goal is weight loss, nutrition has to be the primary concern, although I have seen people lose weight by doing excessive amounts of exercise and having a poor diet of junk food or processed foods, just eating so few calories in order to create the necessary caloric deficit to induce weight loss. The problem is that this form of weight loss is not sustainable, and will cost you in energy as well as overall health. At some point, your body will begin to break down, and either you will binge on foods, as we have seen so many dieters yo-yo with their weight, or you will become ill. The key www.nuevoimpact.com
is knowing what type of nutrition plan is appropriate for long-term, healthy weight loss. And that varies for each of us, based on our metabolic types, our activity levels, and our genes. What we do know is that combining exercise with nutrition is the best answer for sustained, healthy weight loss. Lastly, if your primary goal is peak performance in sports, you can argue endlessly that exercise is the most important aspect, which I tend to agree with. How can you perform at peak levels without exercises that enhance the strength, power, agility, and other athletic attributes? What needs to be understood is that your ability to perform exercises at peak levels depends a great deal on your nutrition. Nutrition can also dramatically affect your ability to recover, to reaction timing, your concentration, and your ability to recruit muscle fibers. All in all, most experts agree that you need both for optimal health, and when done together properly, results are not only seen and felt faster, but the benefits are also the greatest, regardless of your goal. The research shows us that an estimated 75 percent of your results in overall health, weight loss and sports performance, come from your nutrition. l cáncer es una palabra que nadie quiere escuchar cuando habla sobre sus amigos y familiares. Pero, con frecuencia alguien que conocemos es diagnosticado con cáncer. hen it was announced that Mary Zimmerman was recreating “The Jungle Book” for the stage, I was delighted- imagine , if you will, this genius playwright taking the Disney animated film and the works of Kipling as a live musical on the stage at Goodman, and I am sure that you can feel the same elation and high anticipation that many Chicago theater audiences felt. While, I must say that I did enjoy the production, now making its “Theatrical Debut”, there are still some flies in the ointment ( so to speak) that when fixed can make this production one that will be enjoyed by theater audiences fro generations to come! This production features songs from te animated film( Richard M.Sherman and

Robert B. Sherman) as well as original music for this production ( Lorraine Feather and Paul Grabowsky,Terry Gilkyson and Richard M. Sherman) and musical direction by Doug Peck to go along with direction by Ms Zimmerman and some clever choreography by Christopher Gattelli. This production is pure “spectacle” filled with a colorful set (Daniel Ostling), colorful and clever costumes (Mara Blumenfeld),great lighting (T.J. Gerckens) and near perfect sound by Ray Nardelli,Joshua Horvath and Andre J. Pluess. The cast of actors that bring this story to life is amazing. The colorful tales is told by elephants, serpents, a panther, a bear, vultures, orangutans and of course the tiger ( the villain of the tales, played by one of Chicago’s finest Larry Yando, who as always has just the right charm to balance out his evilness. The panther who is responsible for following the rules of the jungle is portrayed with a special touch by Usman Ally and two fo the show stopping numbers are handled by Andre DeShields as King Louie ( the comic Orangutan) and Kevin Carolan as Baloo the Bear. The orchestra, which moves about the stage and into the story itself during the two plus hours of this production is composed of 12 musicians and Doug Peck bringing us the sounds of India as our other designers have done with costumes, set and design of lighting- while we know we are not in India’s jungles, we can feel that during this two hours plus, we have been transported from Dearborn between Lake and Randolph to another place, a special place, one that brings a story of growth, honor and loyalty to our eyes and ears, and yes, to our hearts. ara aquellos que pronosticaron una reforma migratoria este mismo 2013, el año ha progresado de la manera anticipada: La batalla para una reforma migratoria ha tomado fuerza y ha llegado finalmente a la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos. El debate en el Senado fue corto y conciso; siempre se ha adelantado que la batalla real se dará en la Cámara baja, por la gran diversidad de opiniones que los diputados representan. Sin embargo, tanto el partido Demócrata, como el partido Republicano han expresado su compromiso para sacar adelante una reforma efectiva y por consecuencia el debate sobre los que esto significa es inevitable. Aparentemente, la traba principal se dará en la cuestión del balance entre la seguridad de las fronteras y un resultado práctico para que aquellos que ingresaron ilegalmente al país(o que se quedaron más allá del tiempo permitido) antes de Diciem-
bre del 2011. La solución incluirá alguna multa o castigo, y es precisamente en los detalles sobre qué castigo y qué multa es la más apropiada que se dilatará el debate. Una de las otras trabas de esta ley, es que su ejecución está ligada a la protección física de una de las fronteras más largas del mundo. El Congreso quiere que el Presidente provea un plan para asegurar la frontera, antes de permitir a millones de personas arreglar su estatus migratorio.
