Family-operated Suburban Glass fulfills commercial, residential glass needs

“
uburban Glass Service moved to U.S. 31 between Greenwood and Whiteland just in time for a severely damaging spring hailstorm. “This area is a tornado alley,” owner Lynne Halloran said, gesturing out the large front windows of her business toward the southwest. “A lot of storms come through here.” The storm made a mess in many housing additions in the Whiteland and southern Greenwood area, damaging roofs and siding and breaking windows. “We came in to work and had people lined up at the door. For eight straight months, we replaced glass throughout the southside area just from that hailstorm,” she said of the 1996 storm. The technicians, who drive vans with the company’s logo in large, red letters, spent the days after the storm going from neighborhood to neighborhood, measuring and temporarily repairing windows for clients. “Someone would see them and stop and ask
‘Can you fix my window, too?’” Halloran said. Suburban Glass Service (SGS) supplies insulated glass, mirrors, glass shower doors and storm doors, all of which can be custom fit and designed for a specific structure. The business also offers door repair and glass replacement services to local residents and commercial clients. Michael Halloran founded Suburban Glass in 1982 in Indianapolis, along with his wife, Lynne, and son, Tim. It has been at its current location in Whiteland since 1996. The front area of the business is a 2,000-square-foot showroom, where the shower doors, storm and security doors, mirrors and a few bath and home accessories are on display. Right now, Halloran said, the hot item is shower doors and enclosures without the metal frames on the glass. The look was popularized by high-end hotels with their large showers and fancy tile work. It gives the shower a sleek, uncluttered look and makes the glass much easier to clean.

”
The showroom at Suburban Glass Services has plenty of windows, doors and mirrors to take a look at.
Lynne Halloran said. “He had been in the trade for 20-plus years.” Michael’s father, Joe, was a glazing superintendent at Stewart-Carey Glass Co. in Indianapolis in the 1950s and brought 14-year-old Mike to work with him to help out. At age 19, Mike became an apprentice glazier and continued working there for six more years. He worked at another company for 16 more years before starting SGS at age 41. Both of his former workplaces have closed. “Our son worked with him in the field from high school. It’s good to know your
trade from the ground up,” Lynne Halloran said. “(Starting a business) takes a lot of work and sacrifice. In our situation, because we were family owned, we were all working together to build the business. If you’re not ready to sacrifice vacations and time, it won’t be very easy. You’re so focused on down the road, you don’t realize how hard you’re working,” she added.
Continued growth The company grew quickly after its founding and soon outgrew three locations, Halloran said. One location was in the industrial park on Sayre Drive in north
Greenwood, where they experimented with a small showroom for residential customers. They got some walk-in customers there, but felt they could do better in a more retail-oriented area than in an industrial park. “We were just trying it out to see if there was any interest,” Halloran said. “With two large glass companies in Indy closed, there was no place on the southside for people to get windows repaired or tabletops cut, so we were exploring that. The showroom became an important part of this building when we designed it.”
The Hallorans want to ensure they have good employees for the future. Glazing — installing glass — is not a well-known trade nowadays, she said. While the old-world craftsmen used to hand bevel and make intricate rosette designs in glass, much of the work today is done by machine. But glaziers are still needed for cutting, repairing and installing glass. Schools should encourage students to consider all trades, such as glazing, as a career option, she said. “Glazing is an ongoing trade. We would like to train a young person or two to learn glass, page 18

side of Indianapolis. It’s not prime real estate in the ever-changing southside Indy/ Greenwood landscape, but it works for the long-time establishment that relies heavily on word-of-mouth to support its business. As more strip centers, free-standing restaurants, shops and other commercialism are added to the area, Shallos’ three partners and their team of about 45 employees continue to pack people in day after day for favorites such as homemade potato chips, breaded tenderloin, salads with homemade dressings and an assortment of nachos. Though Zoellner earned a teaching degree in college, he has always had a passion for food service and the goal of running a restaurant as effectively and efficiently as possible. is a little different keeps his momentum going. “It’s a neat aspect for a business to survive as long as we have with all of the changes up and down U.S. 31,” he said. “Every day, we face the challenge of getting better and not being complacent. It’s almost an addiction of pulling off

You did it, and you did it as a team.” Zoellner and other partners, Paul Shellabarger and Tim Shilling, meet weekly to discuss business operations – balancing the logistics of keeping restaurant tables full and the kitchen flowing. Radio communication keeps staff and managers connected to seat people faster, and the goal is to serve appetizers immediately and entrees within 15 minutes of placing an order.

Fast service Shellabarger, who opened Shallos in 1981 at a smaller location in the same center, said prompt service has been key to the business’ success. Shallos’ sales have risen consistently from $1.3 million in 2010 to more than $2 million. Shellabarger credits that gain to being able to adapt to what customers want and to solve problems quickly without corporate bureaucracy. To turn product and tables around quickly, the restaurant often has nine
cooks on weekend nights and plenty of staff, many of whom have been with the company more than 20 years. “We want to put out good food, and we want to put it out quickly,” Shellabarger said. “Not only does it satisfy the customer, but we can get you in and out fast.” Shellabarger started Shallos after owning a sub shop in the same strip center out of college. He thought owning a bar would be fun, he said, though Shallos caters to families with its menu and flare for history. The 65-year-old has considered retire-

ment for several years and gives himself four more years in the business. For now, he is content overseeing the financials and serving as the maintenance man, often walking around with power tools before the lunchtime crowd appears. Shellabarger travels all over the country climbing mountains as a hobby and was once interested in airplanes until that pastime became too expensive. When he first opened Shallos, antiques were his passion. He has hundreds of old beer tap handles on display at the restaurant because he found them interesting and collectible. A staple on the Shallos menu is the traditional swamp fare, entrées smothered

in a Caribbean marinade that took three months to develop and perfect. It can be found on everything from tenderloins to chicken nachos. Zoellner is excited and amazed about all of the local beers featured at Shallos, thanks to the exponential rise in the number of microbreweries throughout the area. The restaurant just added 10 more tap lines for local brews and continues to look for great beer to serve. “It’s neat to watch this thing grow and be a part of it,” Zoellner said. “It’s cool because you are supporting local businesses. Local guys want to get their beer at Shallos.” Zoellner credits Shellabarger with hav-
ing the foresight in the 1980s to offer imports and the extensive beer selection, for always being business-minded and for his ability to pay attention to the smallest of details. Though individuals have suggested Shallos build a free-standing facility, the partners are happy where they are in the “Cheers” environment tucked away in the dark space with a nice mix of nostalgia and trendy. They strive to bring smiles to customers’ faces with good food and fun drinks. “After 30 years, you’d think we would know what we’re doing,” Zoellner said. “But we are still talking about it week after week. How do we get better?” B

Cham Chamber supports mass transit initiative The Chamber recently provided input on a proposed ordinance to make Greenwood part of the new Central Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) that will be eligible for state and federal funding to launch the planned Red Line bus rapid transit system linking Greenwood with Indianapolis, Carmel and Westfield. An RDA allows municipalities and counties to work across community boundaries for the benefit of the region. It can fund, develop and manage projects with the goal of attracting people and businesses. As the Chamber has stated in the past, it supports the development of expanded and improved mass transit because it will connect employers to a wider pool of employees and customers; it will connect cultural and sports centers, as well as places of interest within the region, and it will spur economic growth via new development along the designated routes. This is a progrowth strategy for transporta-
tion, land use and infrastructure that will benefit Chamber members. The Greenwood City Council became the first municipality to vote on June 1 to create a regional RDA, and it cast a final vote on June 15. Similar legislation is now moving through the city councils of Indianapolis, Carmel and Westfield. In comments to the Greenwood council at that meeting, Chamber President and CEO Christian Maslowski explained that educated, high-skilled workers are increasingly drawn to more populated, dynamic metropolitan areas. The top 100 metro areas occupy only 12 percent of the nation’s land, yet have two-thirds of its population and 75 percent of its gross domestic product output, Maslowski said. And the 50 largest metro regions boast roughly two-thirds of the science, technology and engineering workers. Why is this important to Greenwood and the region? Consider that Indiana ranks 40th

Have an emergency plan for computer theft By Regina Miller Geek in Pink
Y
ou’re leaving a lunch networking meeting thrilled about new contacts made and the business to follow, you don’t notice a car has been broken into. When you do see the next one, you think “Oh no, somebody’s car was broken into while they were at lunch.” While pitying this stranger, you don’t realize it has happened to you, too, until you see your daughter’s sweater is on the floor and the laptop it was hiding is gone. MILLER You know the normal steps to take, so you call the police to make a report. You tell yourself it’s just an old computer, and this is an opportunity to replace it. In fact, you think, maybe I should have left the car unlocked to avoid a broken window! As you sit on the curb waiting for an officer to arrive and take a report, something occurs to you. You removed the password because your daughter was using it to check semester-end grades which would be posted any minute, and you didn’t want to have to keep re-entering it. Removing the password is a violation of your company’s policy, but you’re more concerned you were still logged into your browser and your email is set to automatically log in. You also have an extension installed to enter usernames and passwords on frequently used accounts. You realize the thief can log into your email and likely access all your
accounts from there. What do you do next? You need an emergency plan. Time is of the essence for you and for the thief. He knows this, and will act fast. So should you. • Log into your email account and change the password for any email accounts you use. This will sever the thief’s access to your email to queue password resets for other accounts. • Change your password for the password keeper software, so it will force the thief to enter a password before logging in and then keep it out when he doesn’t know the new one. • Change the password for any cloud based syncing software, like Dropbox. If you can’t get into the account, but it is logged in another computer, make a copy of the files, so if the thief deletes them out of the drive, you have a copy before the change is synced. • If you know you had sensitive financial information like complete credit card numbers stored on the computer, contact those banks to report the cards. • Change your password on social media accounts, like FaceBook, that were left logged in. When you get your new computer, remember to always keep a simple password. Better yet, have your data encrypted so if someone strips the password, the data would be useless to them or they would just give up. You would still be out your computer, but at least they wouldn’t have your data and account access. Next time make sure to lock the laptop in the trunk! Smash-andgrabs happen more often than you think.

New clinic offers fast treatment for severe neck, back pain
A new spine triage clinic has opened at Franciscan St. Francis Health. The clinic is a combined effort of Rehab Services and the Franciscan Physician Network Spine, Rehabilitation and Neurosurgical Specialists. It is part of an evolving comprehensive Neuroscience Center. The triage clinic is staffed five days a week, with Dr. Erica Cottrell (Franciscan Physician Network Spine Specialists), and Dr. Anthony Mimms sharing time there. Two additional physicians will join the team later this summer, expanding the clinic’s capacity. Under the spine triage clinic model, patients with neck or back pain call a dedicated phone number, 317-528-BACK (physician referral not required). Through a phone interview using a standard set of questions, patients are assigned to the most appropriate medical evaluation. The spine triage clinic is housed in the physical therapy gym on the first floor of the 8051 medical office building at the hospital’s Indianapolis campus. It will eventually move to the third floor.

Go ahead and brand yourself, but don’t be a dweeb
oke promises happiness. Home Depot pledges savings and doing. Delta Air Lines aims to “Keep climbing,” which I guess means it’s making flying less sucky. So what are you offering? Regular people are increasingly racing to personally brand ourselves online so we can get a job, a promotion, investors or a date. Feel free to put some of the blame on Twitter, search algorithms and economic globalization. But no matter where the fault lies, we’re under pressure to figure out what we stand for and condense it into a few telling words that will fit in a Twitter profile, Instagram summary or other social extension. The result is a bumper crop of people proclaiming themselves to be quite glorious business beings, from “thought leaders” to “futurists.” The potential for being a dweeb is immense. (More about my Twitter profile later.) There’s money to be made from the resulting angst. An Atlanta startup recently launched to help law firms, consulting companies and others make sure their high-priced partners and employees have built meaningful online personas that bring in more business. The startup, called Kredible, encourages using words and images rigorously tested for clients’ specific industries. You may be thinking, “But they spell their own name
wrong.” Fair comment, but Brad Shepard, the 40-year-old chief executive, said his 26-person team has already nabbed five of the world’s top 20 law firms as clients and two of the 10 largest professional consulting firms, plus Fortune 100 companies.
Personal brand fixers Trying to win a contract as outside counsel for a major company? Don’t bother including quirky personal interests in your social media profiles. Kredible’s research shows company general counsels don’t care about that human stuff, at least when it comes to picking outside counsel, Shepard says. Looking to help your professional services firm land some work? Use personal photos that are full-face, in color, fully framed, plain background, showing you with just a slight smile, direct eye-contact and wearing a professional blouse or an open collar shirt and a sport coat. If this seems icky and shallow, don’t forget that branding isn’t a new idea. People have long been working their resumes, joining the right clubs and — back in the day — wearing just the right power tie. The difference now is that the online world is always on and ever remembering. Said Shepard, “It’s almost like you are walking around with your resumè on your forehead all the time now.”
Goodbye, humility
The result is that plenty of us have conquered any innate humility to become steroidal self-marketers. And if you haven’t you may be tagged as being: A) In denial, B) Uncaring, C) Very well grounded D) So high up the food chain you have others do that dirty work for you. We are up against powerful forces: l Things change so fast that virtually no job or company seems stable. We’ve got to constantly let people know how great we are so we’ll have a network and resumè to get us a job the next time we’re laid off or our startup stops. l We have online personas on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. that push us to synthesize our essence for general public consumption. Either one can drive us to do foolish things. On Twitter, I announce that I’m a snowflake eater. While this is a factual statement, I’m sure it would prompt eye rolls from sophisticates and doesn’t exactly serve as chum for job offers. Dorie Clark, an adjunct professor at Duke University, speaks on personal branding and says the concept tends to be pretty polarizing. Some people try to opt out, as if their work should speak for itself. Others, she said, go overboard in telling rather

As a manager, don’t add to workplace squabbles
I may have reacted inappropriately to an employee complaint. Last week, “Tracy” told me that a co-worker was being “catty” to her and making rude remarks. Tracy also complained about two other people who do a lot of whispering when she’s around. I took the “catty” co-worker aside and informed her that she had hurt Tracy’s feelings. However, now I’m wondering if this was the right thing to do. I haven’t talked to the other employees yet, so I

would like some advice on how to manage this situation. A: If you fear that you have become overly involved in this schoolyard squabble, I agree with you. When employees begin bickering and tattling, joining the game is not a helpful strategy. So instead of trying to micromanage relationships, gather your group together for a frank discussion about appropriate conduct at work. For example: “Because we seem to be experiencing some unprofessional
behavior, I need to remind you that this is an office, not a social club. You don’t get to choose your colleagues, so you may not like all of them. But that really doesn’t matter. Regardless of your personal feelings, you are expected to be pleasant, helpful and cooperative with everyone.” Next, engage the group in defining specific guidelines for mature, professional communication. Ask them to assess their own team against these standards and cre-
ate an action plan for improvement. In future staff meetings, set aside time for regular progress checks. After that, if some backsliders continue to engage in workplace drama, just treat it as you would any other performance problem. B Marie G. than showing people how good they are.
Thought leaders I recently got an invite to a business conference in Atlanta and scanned the speaker bios. Some described themselves as “thought leaders.” Others disclosed that they are “highly sought after” and have “a proven track record.” Or they have been busy connecting and optimizing, building strategies, focusing on performance or being data driven. They’ve got vision and produce outcomes while delivering deliverables. One guy wrote that he focuses on “adapting technologies to work naturally with existing paradigms of behavior to aid in both decision making and task completion, and to broaden how search removes obstacles and enables people to take action on their ideas, questions, and desires.” I think that means he uses tech that helps us figure out things and do stuff. Or he raises zebras. Another guy’s “potent levels of moxie drives the increasingly multifaceted modes he can operate in to deliver on a cross-discipline strategy.” Hmm.
Eating snowflakes Not everyone sweats their online descriptions. Muhtar Kent, who may be distracted by the task of trying to prevent his company’s name from becoming a synonym for “obesity,” keeps his Twitter profile simple: “Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company.”
”
I ran upon one local real estate leader who describes himself as “Experiencemaker” and another who uses the title “PlaceMaker.” Dan Cathy, who uses a Twitter image of him going head-first down a slide, profiles himself as “CEO and President of Chickfil-A, but I like to say I’m in Customer Service.” I asked both Clark and Tom Collinger, a Northwestern University marketing professor who offers students seminars on personal branding, to give me their professional reaction to a certain somebody’s Twitter profile. “Atlanta journalist, communications pro, business story shaper and a snowflake-eating, strategy-thinking, backroad-seeking family guy.” “It’s a start,” Collinger wrote in an email to me. But it “falls apart a bit on the ‘communications pro’ (differentiation?), and snow-flake eating (relevance?).” Clark said, “It’s pretty good. You are not making outrageous claims for yourself.” I queried her a little more deeply on the snowflake eating business. She seemed to pick through her words carefully. It could, she said, be considered a bit “precious.” “But if you feel that image describes you well, then why not,” she said. “You are never going to please everyone with your personal brand.” I’m sticking with the snow. The working group membership is listed in the Supreme Court order which is available at http://www.in.gov/judiciary/files/order-other2015-94S00-1506-MS-337.pdf. Commercial courts are designed to promote efficient resolution of business disputes by reducing litigation costs and promoting earlier and more frequent settlement of cases. “It’s not just about businesses,” said the working group chair, Allen Superior Court Judge Craig Bobay. “We want to free up court resources by removing time consuming business cases from the regular docket. Other cases, like child custody matters, could be heard more promptly when a complex business case is handled efficiently.” In addition to businesses and legal experts, lawmakers will collaborate on developing the framework for the courts. “This is a critical step in creating a more efficient court system in Indiana,” said Rep. how to handle and work with glass. Many aspects can’t be duplicated by a machine.” SGS’s showroom is aimed toward residential business, Halloran said. “People like to see the shower doors they’re going to order or see what kind of glass you’re going to cut to put in their cabinet.” The back area is a fabrication room, where much of the glass cutting, commercial work and custom window design is done. For new construction and remodels, employees build window frames and cut glass to the specifications. “We fabricate these frames to fit the opening, load them in a trailer and take them to the jobsite, then insert the glass,” Halloran said. “Years ago, you did everything onsite. But with the hot sun or cold winter, it’s just so much nicer that they can fabricate in-house and then take it to the site.” SGS technicians are also available 24/7 for emergencies, such as a car crashing

through a storefront or a smash-and-grab burglary. Technicians will go to the site, tape up or board the window for a shortterm fix, take measurements and order a replacement. Or the customer can bring a removable sash in for repair. Halloran stressed that if you have a broken or cracked pane or fogged glass, save money by replacing just the glass. You likely don’t need a whole new window unless the frame is rotting.
To your specifications The business also does specialty work for furniture, exercise rooms, glass insets in cabinet doors or copying the look of the glass for use in historic buildings, which might be tinted or have a distinctive beveling pattern. The glass is cut and fabricated onsite by the “tableman” or glazier. SGS can also assist with the replacement of tempered glass in items in which it is required by law or building codes, such as entry doors, patio tables or shower doors. Tempering is done for safety and strength. The process rapidly heats and cools the glass so that if it breaks, it breaks into small pieces instead of large shards. Halloran said people have asked them
to cut down shower doors purchased someplace else, but said that once glass is tempered, an attempt to cut it will cause it to shatter. Halloran’s goal is to make people more aware of the retail offerings and encourage people to stop by and shop.
