HAULIN’ ROCKS
Family succession plan keeps Locke Trucking rolling after 26 years STORY BY AMY MAY PHOTOS BY MARK FREELAND
T
he most important component of a construction project is the foundation. And under the foundation is the rock that holds it up. Bargersville-based Locke Trucking brings the rock. Founded in 1989, Locke is a family owned operation. Started by Jerry and Kathy Locke, it is now run by their son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Amy Locke. Dave Locke grew up in the business and studied diesel mechanics at Central Nine Career Center. He worked at Locke as a teenager, first washing the trucks, then maintaining them and then driving. “Dad didn’t want me to be a driver,” he said. “Being a truck driver and being a business owner are two different things.” His dad was an over-the-road truck driver. His mom would occasionally go with him, as would Dave. Dave’s two older sisters were grown and gone, but when Dave was 13, Kathy told Jerry he needed to be home with his son, that he needed more time with his dad. Dave Locke dumps a load of gravel into one of his company’s tri-axle dump trucks.
“He kept the road trucks, but bought a dump truck right at the Johnson County building boom. He sold the over-the-road truck in 1999, but continued to grow the dump truck side,” Dave said. “It was kind of the right time to be starting a dump truck/hauling business.” Dave’s grandparents owned Locke’s Mail Service in Greenwood, which is now run by his uncle, Rick Locke. “Most of the Locke family are independent business owners. I’ve always been around trucks,” Dave said. “I knew I was going to be part of it from an early age.” Jerry operated the business out of his home and moved to the current location just south of downtown Bargersville in fall 2002. “Jerry knows a lot about trucks. They saved lots of money by working on them themselves,” Amy said. “But Dave had to earn a spot here. They didn’t just give him a job. He learned all aspects of the business, from office work to mechanics.” Twelve years ago, the senior Lockes

began to reduce their involvement and give more duties to Dave and Amy. “I knew they’d eventually want to retire and sell the business,” Dave said. That came early this year. Dave and Amy are purchasing Locke from his parents and officially took over on Jan. 1. Jerry is semi-retired and still comes in quite a bit, they said. Dave is now the mechanic and does dispatching. Amy, a Whiteland Community High School graduate, takes care of the accounting, invoicing and billing with a part-time office worker. They’ve been married 15 years.

Dave attended Center Grove schools and grew up with many of the area’s custom home builders, building the relationships needed for a successful business. “We knew them when they were starting out and allowed us to grow with them,” he said.
Haulin’ rocks Locke operates six tri-axle dump trucks that haul aggregate (gravel and crushed stone), sand and topsoil from the mining site to the jobsite. It also has two conveyor trucks that can spread the material and a single-axle dump truck and a Bobcat for smaller jobs.
They provide materials for all types of construction projects, Amy Locke said. Their biggest customers are custom homebuilders and landscapers, as well as excavators. A new development going in could keep the drivers busy for several days hauling pea gravel. But Locke will also truck materials for homeowners, such as a truckload of gravel to replenish a driveway. They have even picked up loads of sawdust for horse owners or compost for a gardener. “Any time you would need any aggregate for a project, we can haul it,” Amy said.
Dave had to earn a spot here. They (parents) didn’t just give him a job. He learned all aspects of the business, from office work to mechanics.

Chamber news Franklin College grad joins Chamber staff The Chamber is pleased to welcome Anna Murdock to the staff team as Membership Development Manager! Anna is a Johnson County native and recent Franklin College graduate, where she triplemajored in international business, management and marketing. While a student, Anna earned placement on the dean’s list, became president of her business honor society, and held membership in two additional campus academic and leadership societies. Anna completed international internships in Spain and Germany, where she conducted market MURDOCK research; created and translated marketing documents; helped design advertising presentations; and managed social media messaging. Most recently, she completed a human resources internship with Endress+Hauser, where she researched
employment law, created program administrative tools and created employee presentations. Anna was also a track and cross country star. Her signature event was the 800-meter run. She was a three-time NCAA Division III outdoor national track and field championships qualifier and earned All-American honors during the indoor and outdoor seasons her senior year. This year she was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference MVP for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. She was just named the Heartland Conference female athlete of the year. This spring, Anna finished eighth in the 800 at the indoor nationals and was national champion at the 800 outdoor run. To compete meant she’d miss commencement, so Franklin College held a private commencement ceremony for Anna upon her return. We are excited about Anna’s quiet strength, determination, leadership, community pride and passion for business. She is eager to meet local business leaders. Contact Anna at anna@greenwoodchamber. com or at 317-888-4856.
Our member experts Encouraging girls will increase women in STEM professions By Sonya Ware-Meguiar CEO, Girls Inc. of Johnson County
D
id you know women make up just 5 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs, fewer than 19 percent of all members of Congress, and less than 25 percent of the STEM workforce? Over the past 30 years in the United States and Canada, women have vastly increased their proportion of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees earned in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). At the same time, however, substantial gaps remain. Girls continue to lag behind boys in course enrollment and advance placement exam participation, and in WARE-MEGUIAR specific STEM subjects, such as computer science, physics and math. Of greater concern is the fact that gains in education have not translated into equality in the workplace. Women still only represent approximately one in five faculty members employed in computer science, mathematics, engineering and the physical sciences combined. Contributing to the underrepresentation of women in these fields are persistent stereotypes that girls are not good at or are not interested in STEM. It is critically important that these stereotypes are dispelled and other obstacles that get in girls’ way are removed. Simply opening the doors will not work. Girls deserve supportive, experiential, all-girl environments where they feel invited and encouraged to join the fun of
discovering the world around them and where they can prove to themselves that they do like and can be good at STEM. Such a foundation will be key to girls persisting in STEM education and preparing for lucrative STEM careers that most of them would otherwise not consider. It will also be important to girls discovering that they can excel in STEM courses and careers. For additional information, contact Sonya Ware-Meguiar, CEO, Girls Inc. of Johnson County, 317-736-5344, or sonya@girlsincjc.org. Girls Inc.’s researchbased programs are designed to address obstacles girls encounter and inspire them to be strong (healthy), smart (educated), and bold (independent).

ot far from the hustle of Greenwood city streets, fresh vegetables and colorful flowers call customers to the country. Wheat crops blow in the fields, and fresh produce blossoms in greenhouses. When ready, tomatoes, cucumbers and other goodies transition from the vine to the stand for seasonal enjoyment. A typical spring weekend at S & E Produce and Flowers on Griffith Road brings many customers wanting a hint of floral color after a long winter of snow and ice. Owners Steve and Elaine Dougherty baby the plants starting in February so Mother’s Day weekend and before will be filled with a rainbow of favorite annuals. On a June morning, shelves that earlier displayed begonias, pansies, wave petunias and impatiens remained empty, and the Doughertys were eagerly awaiting a shipment of 500 chrysanthemum plugs they would grow for fall buyers. That number is about half what they used to plant and sell, but competition and changes in Top left: Steve and Elaine Dougherty founded S & E Produce and Flowers in 2002 on their rural Greenwood farm. buying patterns have forced the couple to adapt their crop planting and produce and flower business to today’s demand. Steve remembers when his father would only start sweet corn after May 10 because of weather uncertainty. Now farmers plant as early as April, staggering the seeds to have a supply most of the summer. Corn crops, these days, grow several feet by June as opposed to the adage of knee high by the Fourth of July. “It’s usually a lot taller than that now,” he said. “We start it a lot earlier.” Married 44 years, the Doughertys have been farming all of their lives together, with Steve taking over after his father passed in 1970 and Elaine always helping but taking a more active role after retiring from her administrative position with the local schools. They farm 300 acres of wheat, corn and

soybeans and expanded into produce and flowers in 2002 because of a need to supply fresh vegetables locally.
Farmer for life Steve can’t imagine working anywhere but outside in the fields with the sun on his face. “I grew up on the farm, and I took over,” he said. “I don’t have a desire to do anything else.” Although his love is crop farming, especially corn and soybeans, Steve has enjoyed the greenhouse aspect of the business and has learned a lot through the years about growing vegetables and plants. The couple has two months of downtime in December and January and spends
the rest of the year planting, harvesting and learning more about gardening techniques. They travel to workshops in neighboring states to learn about new plant varieties and attend seminars at universities and county extension offices. High tunnels, which they began using about three years ago, have helped the business become more efficient by relying on natural weather conditions rather than gas heat. Inside one of their tunnels, cucumbers grow upright on a vine, a technique they learned at one workshop, to help the vegetable grow straighter instead of curved.
“We’re always learning,” Elaine said. The Doughertys have definitely learned that cabbage grows well in the tunnels as one is displayed with leaves sprouting about three feet from its core. Steve enjoys seeing how the produce and flowers blossom each year. “It’s interesting to watch them grow and see what you get,” he said. S & E Produce and Flowers hosts about 20,000 seed starts of cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, leeks and melons, plus hundreds of tomato plants and 20 pepper varieties. She likes working the market because of its effort to help the community eat healthier. The Doughertys have seen their farm and produce company become surrounded by newly developed subdivisions, but they are thankful for support neighbors have given them. In the past several years, they have seen more individuals purchase vegetable plants and grow their own produce. “People want to know where their food comes from,” Elaine said.

S & E partners with Ace Hardware to supply hanging baskets to the city of Greenwood for floral displays. The Doughertys also give greenhouse tours by appointment to preschools, garden clubs, assisted living facilities, 4-H clubs and churches. The tour allows guests to observe the pot filling machine, learn about the watering system and discover how plants grow. The tour is free, but participants can plant and take home a flower for a fee. In their spare time, the Doughertys visit with their daughter and family, including two grandchildren, in southern Indiana and are active members of Rocklane Christian Church. They also travel and play golf.
The couple has always been active in agriculture, 4-H and county extension organizations and enjoys teaching others about farm life. Steve’s goal is to stop crop planting in the next few years and focus on the vegetables and flowers. At age 68, he said it’s difficult to make it as a small farmer without investing in more land and enhanced equipment. Elaine said the two received good advice early on from friends about managing a produce stand, and the couple has followed one suggestion in particular: “Not to become so big that it is difficult to manage the business. I think we’re at our limit.” B

Plenty of reasons why employees aren’t ‘engaged’
urnover plagues American workplaces. The revolving door — pushed by attrition, downsizing, firings, retirements of the big baby boom generation, and the tendency of younger generations to change jobs often — makes employee turnover a top challenge for human resource professionals. Forty percent of respondents to the 2015 Employee Recognition Report, a new survey by the Society for Human Resource Management and Globoforce, said employee retention and turnover were challenges. Looking closer at the survey responses, I think the next top-mentioned matter — “employee engagement” — is a far bigger problem. Employee engagement, cited by 39 percent, nipped at the heels of turnover’s 40 percent, but look at other problems
listed in the survey: Culture management, cited by 24 percent; performance management, 22 percent; employee satisfaction, 22 percent; relieving employee frustration, 14 percent; employee enablement, 12 percent; productivity, 11 percent; employee happiness, 9 percent. Any or all of them are other ways to talk about “employee engagement.” Any or all could mean human resource officers see that employees are not as tuned into their tasks as they might be. I just saw a national Workplace Options poll in which 1 in 3 American workers admitted they regularly deal with their own financial matters during the work day, generally because of worries or stress and not because they’re playing the market on company time. It’s very sad. Even though the U.S. job
market — finally — has improved from its post-recession depths, the improvement hasn’t looked like past recoveries that significantly bettered workers pay and/or job satisfaction. We know why: Part-time and contract jobs without employee benefits have replaced many full-time jobs. Employee raises have stagnated. Mortgages and the need to have two-income households have kept many workers tied to their jobs, unable to relocate. Employee costs have risen for their employer-subsidized health insurance. Downsizing has reduced options for promotions or transfers. The power of unions to set wage standards has faded. Then read the headlines about soaring CEO pay and corporate profits. We could well discuss whether American
workers suffer from an entitlement complex, or whether they’ve been left too far behind while executives and stockholders have prospered. There’s truth in both conclusions. But the stunning reality is that worker unhappiness permeates workplaces, and that’s not a recipe for productive, innovative, globally leading enterprises. Human resource practitioners are right to say they’re challenged. But we can’t just tally the problems. We have to stem the employee disengagement spiral. Ideas? B

Landscape Greenwood now king of county’s economic hill
ifteen years ago, Franklin was the community with the most workers and highest payroll in the county. The city dominated the list of the county’s top employers, with workplaces such as ArvinMeritor and Best Buy. By 2004, the Arvin plant had closed; Best Buy followed in 2012; and hundreds of people lost their jobs. And Franklin was no longer the leader. The number of workers in the city fell during a 10-year period, and the number of workplaces grew by only 2 percent, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics from 2003 to 2013. At the same time, Greenwood was booming, and the number of workplaces and workers both grew by more than 30 percent. Wages grew by 77 percent. One of the biggest areas of growth in Greenwood was in the medical industry, which made up 20 percent of all workplaces in the city by 2013. That change is clear to anyone who drives along County Line Road or Emerson Avenue, where multiple medical offices, outpatient centers and other health care facilities have opened in the past decade. The numbers point to some of the key issues local communities face. Greenwood has benefited from its proximity to Indianapolis, shown by its 42 percent increase in employees. Other central Indiana communities, including Fishers and Carmel, have seen similar trends, said Matt Will, a financial economist.
Franklin Mayor Joe McGuinness said. Many have made their processes more computer-based, so fewer employees are needed, contributing to the 10-year loss in employees. But the workers that are needed often must have more advanced skills, and that means jobs typically come with higher pay, he said. The jobs focus more on robotics and other STEMbased education, and McGuinness said he wants to make sure to work with Franklin schools and Franklin College to be sure students are ready for work in those fields. “We tell (students) don’t be afraid of working in a manufacturing center, because it’s not what your parents or grandparents were working in,” he said.

Dr. Mark DiLella, left, inspects patient Alex Trembley’s hand during a check-up at OrthoIndy South in Greenwood. Trembley injured his right hand while lifting weights.
In multiple communities, larger companies, such as Cummins in Columbus or Meade Johnson in Evansville, are deciding to expand and build new facilities in Indianapolis, meaning those jobs aren’t staying in the smaller communities, where they first started. “Everyone is struggling with this. How do you get economic development in rural areas? And no one has the answer to this,” Will said. For Franklin, a focus on innovation and the city’s strength in manufacturing could be a big boost, he said. “They should be proud of it and embrace it and say, ‘Hey come here if you want to do light manufacturing,’” Will said. Manufacturing continues to be one of the largest fields Changes for Franklin of employment in Franklin, but that took a hit when But Franklin is falling into the category of more rural communities, and the loss of jobs and workplaces in rural some of the largest companies made cuts or closed. But the city does need to make sure to have the skilled workforce the companies will need, such as by pushing STEM education, since the available workforce is one of the top concerns of businesses, he said. “We need to work on developing our workforce so they can better fit these jobs,” he said. “They need to know those people are going to be there, not only when they open their doors, but 10 years from now, and we need to focus on that.” High-skilled manufacturing is a growing focus in Franklin, such as at Mitsubushi Heavy Industry Climate Controls, where the company recently expanded to manufacture more turbochargers, which can give a 1.6-liter engine the same horsepower as a 2-liter engine and are more attractive due to fuel efficiency regulations. KYB Americas, which has expanded multiple times since locating in Franklin in 1989, added another 50 workers, made room for added production lines and created space for research and development in its most recent development. “We’re interested in higher skilled manufacturing,

Locke maintains accounts with area gravel operations. So customers can pay for the stone, and the hauling and the spreading of that stone, or, in the case of the sawdust or compost, just pay for the hauling. Amy said she set up a booth at last year’s Johnson County fair to talk to people about driveways and other smaller hauling needs. Many gravel driveway owners may not know what to do when they want to refresh their driveways. “I was amazed at how many people don’t know they can call a company like us,” she said. “Many people thought we had concrete or trash trucks. But we will haul anything that will fit in the back of the truck and dump out.”

a residual effect, so it helps prevent refreezing. It works faster, at lower temperatures, and is less damaging to the roads, sidewalks and curbs. “It’s used exclusively by New York. You use less of it,” she said. Locke carries bulk and bagged salt, liquid ice melt and de-icing equipment. Salt purchasing is a delicate business, Amy said. “In July, we’re really busy. That’s when salt prices come out. People start calling mid-summer,” she said.
Ice, ice, baby The family also started a separate business in February 2009 to provide ice melt and road salt. Locke De-Icing Solutions provides products to contractors as well as homeowners. provide access in and out of the city, and another exit under construction at Worthsville Road. Officials are planning for the future of that new interchange, including the possibility for high-end office space, which is a need for the city, Myers said. The city has few high-end offices, and most of those are full. That will be something the city will want to try to bring in the future, both to Worthsville Road and undeveloped land at Main Street, Myers said. B

Locke offers a deal to the businesses that buy ice melt or salt in bulk, such as schools, hospitals or landscapers that contract those services to clients. They can decide in July how much they will order for the upcoming winter, pay for half upfront and pay for the rest throughout the season. Locke stores the salt for them and they come and get it as they need it. “It’s 24/7, even during a snowstorm. We’ve had a good response from our customers,” Amy said. “Most landscapers or schools don’t have places to store salt.” This ordering system also helps Locke know how much salt to buy. Since ordering is done in the summer, when we have no idea what kind of winter we will have, it’s a gamble to predict how much salt will be needed, Amy said. Last winter saw system-wide salt shortages because of the unusually snowy winter, the flooded Mississippi River, which halted barge traffic, and other logistical issues. Locke was asked by area cities and counties if it had any salt to spare. “We try to work with municipalities,” Amy said. “They had exhausted all their resources during the high snow season.” Locke helped them out, she said. “We kept up relationships during the shortage,” she said. “Price gouging is big in
the salt business. We don’t do that. We charge what we need to make a profit. If you build relationships, they’ll come back.” The salt division of the business also caters to homeowners, who can buy a 5-gallon bucket of bulk salt or Ice B’Gone. Once they use the product, they can bring the bucket back and get it refilled for a lower price.
Recession blues A business like Locke is dependent on local building trends, so the 2008 recession, which severely reduced new construction in Johnson County, was felt by it, too. Locke reduced the number of trucks, but is now starting to build the fleet back up. It recently ordered three new trucks, which brings the total to nine, and would like to get 12 to 14, which Dave Locke said is a good, manageable level. “It’s almost a full-time job to dispatch them all,” he said. The salt business, started in the midst of the economic bust, helped them weather the recession. “It was surprising to us how the two (businesses) work hand in hand. The salt also keeps people employed during the winter and helps us avoid seasonal layoffs. Our guys have stayed pretty busy,” Amy said. B
