COUCHED IN COMFORT
PETS GO ON VACATION, TOO, AT FUNNY FARM
I
STORY BY AMY MAY PHOTOS BY MARK FREELAND
n the dog-eat-dog world of business, kindness is a value that’s easy to push to the back burner. Who has time to be kind when there’s marketing to do, paperwork to finish, stocking, cleaning, reshelving and countless other tasks a small business owner completes? At Funny Farm Petcare, kindness is not only encouraged, it’s part of the business’s mission statement. It’s No. 2 on the list of 11 core values that is handed out to clients, employees and other interested visitors: “Be kind and respectful to all.” Funny Farm is a pet boarding business with two Johnson County locations and one site in northern

Morgan County. It is owned by longtime business partners Kathy Keating and Sandy Potter. It offers hands-on boarding and promises that pets will be treated like the valued family members they are. “One of the most important things we want to portray is kindness, both to people and animals,” Potter said. “We’re really about having options for our clients. We just really believe you can be kind and still have a good business,” Keating added. The primary recipients of Funny Farm’s kindness are, of course, the pets being boarded there. “We want them to have a really good experience
while they’re here. Our signature item is ‘couch time,’” Potter said. Most couch time is given in the “IU room” next to the front desk or in a room near the kennels with plush leather furniture. Inside each room is a large sofa and a table and chairs, a TV and box of dog toys. Instead of spending the entire stay in a cage, each pet or family group gets to come and play with the staff members each day. Dogs can lie on the couch, watch TV and play with the toys in the doggy toy box or just enjoy individual petting and snuggling. Cats get couch time, too.
Even when they are in their kennels, the “guests” have it pretty good. They rest on raised cots, called Kuranda beds, and soft music plays constantly. Fleece blankets are available or clients can bring their own pet’s special blanket or cushion, as well as a couple of toys. Separate areas are provided for cats, small dogs and large dogs so they aren’t stressed. Funny Farm Petcare Pets from the same family can be housed together if desired. Franklin/Amity: 4170 S. We go Founded: 2006 Employees: Five to 20, depending on out five times a day and give them couch time or season treats,” Potter said. “They all have different Goals: Continue to build business and keep clients coming back; expand to things they need, and we tailor to that, such as other areas in Indianapolis metro area puppy, senior, special needs or elderly.” One popular feature is the kennel’s use of Facebook. With the client’s permission, employees will take a photo of the pet and post the picture on Facebook. “So people can see their pets while they’re on vacation,” Potter said. The facilities have a homey look, with country touches decorating the out-

side. The lobby has a couple of plush chairs, gingham and lots of pet-related art and old-wood touches that give it the look of a farmhouse. The kennel area is spotless and smells more like a beauty salon than a kennel. “It doesn’t smell or look like a boarding facility,” Keating said. “We want you to feel at home, feel at ease.” In fact, Keating and Potter rarely even use the word “kennel” in their literature. Their tagline is “Bed and Breakfast for Doggies & Kitties, too.” The country theme is extended to the “Farmers Market,” where customers can buy special treats for their pets to enjoy during their stay. Treats include a Kong-brand toy stuffed with peanut butter or “Frozen Paws,” an icy treat in a cup. The Amity location can house 40 dogs and has 10 cat condos. The Bargersville site has 18 dog suites, which are themed. Customers can choose from six packages

depending on the needs of their pets and how much attention they want given. All packages include couch time and individual potty breaks. The VIP packages include treats, extra couch time and additional outdoor breaks. Cats stay in the “Cat Condo,” which are separate cages in a closed room just for felines. Each cat gets its own cage, unless the owner wants his cats kept together. Cats also get couch time, and kitties with special needs can get the VIP package, which includes extra time outside the cage. “We’re really big about having options for clients,” Keating said. The staff has taken the kindness decree to heart, as well. During last winter’s storms when several inches of snow were predicted, staff members volunteered to come to the facilities and spend the night, so someone would be there to care for the pets in case the roads were blocked, Potter said.
Keating and Potter also extend their kindness to nonclients. They use their business contacts, including area veterinarians and customers, to try to “rehome” homeless pets. They have taken in five dogs themselves, all rescues, and bring them to work every day. They have also taken in pets long term for people in dire straits, such as a friend who had a house fire and another person who was facing a complicated move.
Started as a favor Keating and Potter have known each other for 27 years, meeting when they were both at Indiana University. Keating most recently worked as a probation officer in Morgan County. Potter has worked for Menards and Ball State. They live in Waverly. They have always loved animals and would often pet sit for friends going on vacation. They built a small six-kennel facility at their home in 2006, taking in the pets of friends and acquain-

tances. Word-of-mouth turned it into a real business. When Keating’s mother died, she inherited money, so they decided to expand. She found the building on U.S. 31 next to Long’s Furniture when she was checking a website for foreclosures in late 2008. The building had been a church, an auction house and most recently a dog boarding kennel. It had outdoor kennels and fencing, but it needed extensive changes indoors to fit the standards they wanted for their facility, Keating said. They took seven months to remodel it and opened for business in May 2009. Four years later, they opened the Bargersville site. The name, Funny Farm, started as a joke, Potter said. They had a small farm at one point with a couple of goats and pigs and called it their funny farm. That seemed a good name for their new venture. The business is very labor intensive, Keating said. People are always busy answering phones, caring for pets, including lots of cleaning, and maintaining the facilities. “You can’t be a small business owner and not have a lot of gumption,” she said. “Neither of us has a busi-
ness degree.” They’ve read a lot and taken classes, and, of course, experience is one of the best teachers. Keating said the biggest challenge was finding and keeping good staff. “I tend to be ‘my way or the highway,’” she said. She had to learn to compromise a bit. “I’m not a probation officer anymore.” They are proud of what they have accomplished, though, and the best part of the job, Potter said, is that they get to play with all the dogs and cats.
‘From the ground up’ “We’ve really built it from the ground up,” Keating added. “We’ve grown from six kennels to this. It started just pet sitting for friends and going to their houses while working full time. It really blossomed. What happened to me (her mother’s death) was life-changing. We just decided to take the money and do something different.” It was a risk to grow the business in the midst of the recession, but Keating said the pet care industry remained healthy during the

WHILE THEY WERE LEARNING ARITHMETIC, WE WERE ADDING TO THE AREA’S ECONOMY When these Hopewell School seventh-graders excitedly focused on learning long division in 1945, Mutual’s principals had already been investing in a stronger Johnson County for 55 years by making home loans. Seventy years later, we’re helping many of their classmates’ grandchildren learn about the financial security that comes with owning a home—and we’re still proud to be earning good marks for delivering friendly, responsive service!

ervice organizations throughout Johnson and southern Marion counties met and, in some cases, surpassed their fundraising goals for last year. From Kiwanis and Rotary to Lions Club and Sertoma, the organizations hope to keep the momentum going this year.
Franklin Kiwanis Club The Franklin Kiwanis Club’s fundraising efforts, including a golf outing at the Tameka Woods Golf Course in Trafalgar and the Kiwanis food booth at the Johnson County Fair, raised more than $15,000, said Jim Barnett, club secretary and Kiwanis member of more than 40 years.

The club also collected items for the KIC-IT, a program designed to help homeless youths in Johnson County, and food donations for the Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County and Lord’s Cupboard. Additionally, the club offered support to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health by providing items for its hospitality cart, which supplies families, who may have not had time to pack before bringing their children to the hospital, with toiletry items. Barnett says the club’s primary emphasis is to help the young people of Johnson County and this coming year will welcome the return of the same fundraising efforts as last year.
Greenwood Kiwanis Club Tom Anthony, secretary for the Greenwood Kiwanis Club, said his club’s projects don’t vary much from year to year. In all, the club raised more than $6,000 last year. Similar to other Kiwanis clubs in the area, the Greenwood club has worked closely with Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health to offer items for the hospital’s hospitality cart, as well as helping fund the purchase of ambulances. The club’s annual fundraising raffle brought in $2,000 last year for Riley. Another $5,000 was raised during the club’s upscale rummage sale in March and the

club’s annual chili cook-off and silent auction netted another $2,000. For the coming year, Kiwanis members are hoping the addition of a dunk tank, which will be featured at the Greenwood Freedom Festival on the weekend before July 4 at Craig Park, will raise an additional $2,000.
Kiwanis Club of Perry Township A culmination of nearly 40 years of fish fries has led the Kiwanis Club of Perry Township to branch out this past year. Realizing fish fries are generational, the club partnered with Community South Hospital to give attendees more. The event was held at the Baxter YMCA in Indianapolis and offered an expanded menu and combined the traditional with a family day and pet adoption. In all, the July event raised more than $10,000. Samia Cote, president of the Franklin Lions Club, said the club raised more than $10,000 last year to help sponsor various community organizations and causes, including Shop with a Cop, Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County, the Franklin Little League, Girls Inc., and the Humane Society of Johnson County. This year, the Lions Club calendar is nearly set. Upcoming fundraising events will include the annual fish fry in May, Smoke on the Square in June, the Johnson County Fair in July, the Lion’s Pride Ride (a bicycle ride organized in conjunction with Lions Clubs in Shelbyville and Edinburgh) on Labor Day weekend, and another fish fry in October.
Rotary Club of Franklin The Rotary Club of Franklin raised $25,000 during its most successful hog roast event in 20 years. Stephanie Wagner, club president, attributes the annual event’s success to increased promotion, advertising and volunteer efforts to raise donations. In April, the club held a Sip and Savor fundraiser at the Johnson County Museum of History, which raised nearly $4,000. Those funds will help fund a trip to Kuji, Japan for 10 area students and two chaperones later this fall. “Rotary is the world’s largest service organization,” Wagner said. “The beauty with what Rotarians do is we are a group of concerned citizens who strive to make the community we live, work and play in better.” service, page 17

Winter is approaching ... Is your roof ready? By Keith Waller Cornett Roofing
T
he unmistakable signs of fall are here: football is back, the morning air is a bit crisper and the sunshine wanes earlier each night. Autumn brings to mind beautifully colored leaves, pumpkin-flavored lattes and relaxing hay rides. But unfortunately, we know Old Man Winter is right around the corner. When it comes to your home or business roof, fall is a critical time to inspect and prepare for the comWALLER ing winter. As roofing professionals, we recommend your home or business roof be inspected annually in the fall to identify any deficiencies that need to be fixed before winter arrives. In this article, we will point out some areas of concern and potential problems that can occur if not addressed.
Commercial buildings with low-slope roofing For buildings with low-slope roofing, periodic inspections and maintenance is a must. Unlike the pitched roof on your home, low-slope roofs rely on strong
seams, flashings and metal details to prevent water entry. The components that need regular preventive maintenance vary slightly by roof type, but here are some common items that need to be addressed: • Roof drains need to be free of debris with an operational strainer basket. • The sealants used to caulk termination bars, counter flashings and other perimeter elements need to be checked for deficiencies and replaced, if necessary. • Seams around roof penetrations, such as pipes, machinery or vents need to be checked and repaired, if necessary. • The general condition of the roof should be noted and major problems such as shrinkage, cracking, blistering or tearing indicate the roof is nearing the end of its useful life. Once winter arrives, repairs on these types of roofs are difficult and tend to be temporary, due to the cold and wet conditions. Don’t wait until the first big snow thaw to find out you have roof problems.
Residential roofs Protecting the value of your home is paramount to most people, and your roof is one of your biggest assets (or possibly a liability). In order to ensure your roof is prepared for winter, here are some items that
should be serviced or inspected each fall: • Gutters. Those autumn leaves are beautiful, but they clog your gutters, leading to the most common cause of winter leaks — ice damming. Ensure your gutters are clean or, better yet, install a gutter protection system and never clean those nasty things again. • Flashings. These are the roof details around chimneys, vents and pipes. These need to be checked and/or serviced for waterproofing integrity. • Damaged materials. Whether you have an asphalt shingle, slate or tile roof, ensure any missing or broken items are replaced.
Conclusion Indiana’s notoriously fickle weather is harsh for many types of roofs, particularly because of the drastic changes in temperature, powerful storms and flat topography. By hiring a reputable professional roofing contractor and conducting regular inspections and maintenance, you can greatly extend the life of your roof, prevent unnecessary leaks and damage and enjoy peace of mind this winter.

Dealing with a direct report who’s easily offended
One of my team members takes it personally when clients disagree with him; he even is offended if
other colleagues try to have a dialogue about opinions, and thinks that they don’t
like him. How can I help him see that everything isn’t personal? A: Getting the message through is worth the effort if you can communicate in a way he’ll hear.
First of all, be clear in your own mind that you’re not personally responsible for his responses in this situation. While it is your role as a leader to mentor, don’t become involved at a dysfunctional level.
At the same time, ensure that the overall work environment is positive and that the work gets done effectively. Take a look at his behavior overall; does he offended, page 14 october 2015 I southside business exchange

downturn and didn’t seem to be affected. She thinks it’s because people look at their pets as children and will spend money on them, even if they have cut back in other areas of their lives. Pets are valued family members, often referred to as “fur babies.” Pet owners are demanding better services from their veterinarians, groomers and boarders, as well as respect from society regarding their pets’ value. Keating said the best example of this trend was when Hurricane Katrina struck in the South. People were told to evacuate but were not allowed to take their pets on the buses out of New Orleans or into the storm shelters. For this reason, many people refused to leave. “Now, the shelters have to take animals,” she said. Traditional boarding kennels include little personal attention. The pets are fed and the cages are cleaned, but the animals are not pampered. “It used to be that all that was around was the indoor/outdoor kennel. It’s shifted. People are taking better care of their animals. They treat them like family members,” Keating said. “We are trying to re-create that environment in the kennel industry.” B

generally get along well with others and catch on to social cues? If not, he may have some emotional intelligence shortfalls that cause him to have trouble making an accurate interpretation of disagreements. It sounds like the basic issue is that he sees in black and white: If I am not right, then you’re the enemy (exaggerated, but not by much). Also consider whether it’s having a material impact. Are other people bothered? Is progress on projects impeded? If so, you have a more urgent call to action. If not, it’s more of a matter of doing right by your team members by helping him

become more effective. So, what can you do? As in all human interactions, the key will be communication. Set up time to talk with him, focusing on a recent case when this behavior has shown up. Ask him to walk you through the experience, paying attention to the tone of the exchange (as he reports it) and his reaction. Your goal will be to get him to see alternative explanations, and there are some coaching tools that can help you along the way. For example, he might say something like, “She told me that my approach wouldn’t work; I know she doesn’t like working with me.” Try asking, “What other experiences might explain her reservations?” or “what other explanation might

there be for her reaction?” Also, push him to notice times when he gets along fine with the person as evidence that it’s not about personal regard for him. This may require multiple conversations to help him adapt his point of view. You might also provide examples of debates where the purpose is to explore ideas through mutual challenge so that he can see that disagreement doesn’t mean attack. Point out examples at work where dialogue and diverse viewpoints have led to tangibly better outcomes. Again, remember that he’s going to have to be willing to grow. If he’s unable to move beyond this perception and it’s damaging working relation-
ships or interfering with getting good outcomes, he may have to be put on notice that it’s affecting his job performance. Because let’s face it, not everyone at work will always like him. And even if they do, they won’t always agree with him. He needs to understand that it doesn’t matter; the expectation is to be civil and respectful, including when disagreeing on a business topic. Rotary Club of Greenwood Greenwood’s Rotary Club held two major fundraising events which brought in more than $10,000. The club’s annual golf outing at Dye’s Walk Country Club in Greenwood raised nearly $5,000 to help fund scholarships for area high school students. The club also held an auction in November which raised an estimated $5,500. The club is in the midst of a major project intended to raise $52,000 to benefit earthquake victims in Nepal. Rotary members are camping out in a tent off U.S. 31 in the parking lot adjacent to the Lotus Garden restaurant. “The fundraiser will continue until we reach our goal,” said Rob Bailey, a five-year Rotary member. The club intends to raise additional funds to assist with a $60,000 joint project with the Greenwood City Parks Department and fire department to build a new playground just off Main Street. Construction for the new park is expected to kick off in May, Bailey said.
Rotary Club of Johnson County Founded in September 2014, the Rotary Club of Johnson County completed several
individual projects through the end of the year. Karen Buckler, club president and five-year Rotary member, said the fledgling 18-member club didn’t tackle any large projects initially and kept their efforts small to start. “We really didn’t do any fundraising,” Buckler said. “We just did food collection and held a luau event at the Tax Man Brewery in Bargersville. We are going to try to do that on an annual basis and then add that as a fundraising and food collection event.”
Sertoma Club of Greenwood The seventh annual Wine, Art, Music and Microbrews (WAMM) Fest held by the Sertoma Club of Greenwood raised more than $100,000 to help fund scholarships for area students. The annual August event held at Craig Park featured 75 juried artists, 15 microbrews and local wineries, 20 restaurant and food vendors, and six bands. Club secretary Denny Rusher said the festival continues to grow each year. Partnering with the city of Greenwood, the Parks Department and police and fire departments, Rusher said the club’s national focus is speech and hearing and that all proceeds from its events go directly back into the community. Brothers bring subscription model to their styling salons
B
rothers Fred and Steve Vicario are blessed with heads of wavy Italian hair, the kind that can look perfect with little effort. Their business model, however, counts on people who want far more pampering. And it employs a method that more businesses, from spas to job-search networks, have resorted to in recent years to ensure repeat customers: memberships. Such membership or subscription-based models are proliferating at a time when online coupon networks such as LivingSocial and Groupon have elevated deal-hunting over brand or business loyalty. “Our main focus is the memberships,” said Steve Vicario, Cherry Blow Dry Bar’s chief operating officer. “Generating that guaranteed revenue a month is what helps you to break even fast. You want to … get that break-even fast, and the rest is gravy.” The Vicarios took over Cherry Blow Dry Bar, a franchise of just eight U.S. locations, in April, with a plan to grow to 200 salons in five years. That’s right, 200 storefronts, each lined with swivel chairs and mirrors and offering limited hair-styling services (blowdrys and extensions) but not cuts and color. Average appointment: 40 minutes, starting as early as 7 a.m. “It’s a hot concept. It’s not a fad,” said Steve Vicario, 42, saying that the Philadelphia-area salon where we met for an interview was booked that particular Friday with 70 appointments.

Despite Cherry Blow Dry’s lackluster growth since 2013, when its Australian founders expanded their 5-year-old company to the United States, the Vicarios say they are confident of their growth goal. Franchisees need about $250,000 for startup costs, including working capital, equipment and buildout. Of the eight current locations — in California, Florida, New Jersey, Tennessee and Virginia — the Vicarios own just the Philadelphia-area site. It’s also corporate headquarters. Another Philadelphia-area Cherry Blow Dry is expected to open in February. Three more are soon planned, for Miami and Virginia. “We know nothing about hair, but we saw a niche in the market,” said Fred Vicario, 47, Cherry Blow Dry’s president. He and his brother were convinced of the wisdom of this pursuit after visiting Drybar, considered the blow-dry industry leader. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Drybar opened its first shop in February 2010 and expects to have more than 50 U.S. locations by the end of 2015. “But we knew there were different things they weren’t doing that we could bring into Cherry,” said Steve Vicario. One was to push memberships, which he said Drybar offered but did not emphasize. Cherry Blow Dry offers two types: $59 a month gets customers two monthly blowouts; any additional blowouts each month are at the discounted price of $35 each (regular price is
$45); $99 a month comes with unlimited blowouts. Makeup services also are offered. Though hair care might not have been the Vicarios’ forte, franchising is. As regional directors for Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, the brothers developed 25 sites and own two. Formerly an executive at Maaco (20 years), Fred Vicario helped grow the auto-painting and collision-repair shops franchise from 300 to 550 locations, and he has been a Goddard School franchisee for 15 years. Each has a niche, as does Cherry Blow Dry Bar, Fred Vicario said: “We’re offering a luxury to the masses.” Cathy Ettinger, 64, is one of the 250 paid members at the salon the Vicarios own. She comes twice a week. “I treat myself,” she said of her $99-a-month Cherry Blow Dry membership. “I do my own nails.” For the Vicarios, she represents a remedy to what ails most small businesses, said Lane Fisher, a partner at Philadelphia law firm Fisher Zucker LLC, which specializes in franchises. “All businesses struggle with cash flow, so a recurring (membership payment) creates predictability,” Fisher said. And that, in turn, provides the economic foundation for expansion. Fisher pointed to Massage Envy, the largest massage franchise, with more than 1,000 locations and 1.4 million members. “The speed at which their membership model could grow allowed (franchisees) to open more than one,” Fisher said.
