corporate gifting

What to keep in mind when giving gifts

S

everal experts believe that giving gifts to clients at holiday time is a great idea. They do caution, however, to choose carefully when deciding what to give. Too expensive might make it look like you’re trying to bribe someone to do business with you, and you don’t want that. Too trite and you risk alienating your clients in a completely different way. Below are some things to consider when making the decision to give: From: Peter Gasca Co-founder of WildCreations.com 1. Check corporate policies There are times that accepting gifts could create a conflict of interest, or at least the appearance of a conflict of interest. Remember this, in both giving and receiving corporate gifts. 2. Spread the cheer You may want to institute a policy where vendors may give gifts that could be used by the entire office (not just a particular department). This eliminates much of the office resentment from employees who are often left out.

4

november 2015 I southside business exchange

3. Give yourself Give something you already have, your own products or services. This saves money and can be seen as more personal. 4. Make it useful Office supplies, for example, are items that will be used throughout the year. 5. Put your ego in check Use these gifts to market your company, but tone it down. While you may be excited to wear a hat or windbreaker with your company logo embroidered so large it can be seen from space, more than likely others will not. 6. Give a gift, not diabetes Not only do a lot of the sweets that pass through offices at this time of year fail to make it through the holidays, they create an incredibly unproductive sugar crash in the office around 4 p.m. From Ekaterina Walter Author, speaker 1. The best gifts are the ones that create experiences. Because at the end of the day experiences, and the memories those experiences enable, matter the most to us. We employ Maya Angelou’s words: “People will

forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they’ll never forget how you made them feel.” 2. Pay attention. One time, someone I work with heard me casually talk about my 5-year old suddenly getting smitten by unicorns, and I mused out loud about the need to go online and find a unicorn toy for her. The next day, that person sent me a little white unicorn toy. I was elated. 3. Do things a little differently. Instead of your average candy, for example, send an assortment of international candy. The mystery and uniqueness is part of the fun. 4. Have fun with a holiday. At Christmas, for example, send a list of 12 things that any marketer would need for the next year and included intangible service offers as well. From John Hall CEO of Influence & Co. Try subscriptions for client gifts. Benefits include: ● Showing clients and partners that you appreciate them in a genuinely thoughtful way, not in an “I’m bribing you with a $500 bottle of wine” kind of way. ● It’s a way to stay on your client’s mind as they receive something every month. ● Even though the gift keeps on giving for 12 months, you only have to order it once. GROWTH

Sure but steady has been Beeson’s motto

T

o many, Beeson Mechanical Service is already a widely recognized name in the heating and air conditioning service industry. But Vice President Leslie Beeson said the business has many other offerings that some are just now learning about. “We’re mostly thought of for heating and air, but we also do electrical,” she said. “We do a lot of specialty work with indoor air quality and even handle many requests regarding commercial dehumidifiers, so if you have a flood, we’ll work on your equipment. “We even get a lot of phone calls from other HVAC service companies if they run into problems,” she continued. “Basically, we do everything that’s fully mechanical.” Her husband, Kent Beeson, launched the

company in 2000 with the intent of providing residential services only, but quickly recognized a growing demand in the commercial and industrial industries, too. “Our business is pretty evenly balanced now between all three areas,” said Leslie, who

took over office management responsibilities for the company in 2005, the same year she and Kent were married. She hadn’t originally planned to pursue an employment opportunity with her new husband’s business. “I went to school at IU for human development and family studies, which is fairly similar to social work,” she said. “However, there was a lady working here at the time who got hurt and ended up with some permanent damage. She wasn’t able to work here anymore. That all happened about a week before I was going to start sending my résumé out. So I changed plans. “Now, while Kent handles field management, I interact with customers and employees, so I’m probably still using my degree to some point.”

Beeson Mechanical provides installation, service and repair for everything from heating, cooling and electrical units to plumbing and even geothermal heat pump systems. The Whiteland-based company also carries filters, humidifier pads and thermostats along with HVAC and other mechanical parts.

Work/family balance But juggling a family business and family responsibilities can certainly be challenging, at times. Especially since the couple has three sons: Kaden, 7; Keelan, 3; Kelton, 1. “As a family, time has always been a challenge for us. We especially realized that once we had kids,” Leslie said. “But we have a lot of family in the area, so we have a great support system. Our goal is that if we can’t leave work at a regular time, at least one of us will be home with the kids no later than 6 p.m. “I’m actually pretty lucky because having a family business allows me to take my own son to school each day. We can take our time in the morning so we’re not rushed. I get to help with homework, too,” she said with a laugh. Sometimes, when the Beesons find it difficult to be home with their children, they bring their sons to work. “We have a set-up in our office here so the kids have their own desk, television and toys,” Leslie said. “It can be challenging, but we make it work. They like to help out with things. “However, we try to set weekends aside for just family.” While expanding their family, Kent and Leslie have also continued to develop their business. “It’s been easy for us to grow, but I think controlled growth is really beeson, page 9

our biggest challenge,” Leslie said. “This year, we’ve really gotten into tracking things and have learned that we need to focus on the business itself. “We want to stay local, but it’s been a challenge to get the right people and processes in place.” Through it all, however, the Beesons have maintained a strong commitment to community programs, such as Johnson County 4-H & Agricultural Fair events, the Whiteland Girls’ Basketball League, Proctor Park, Kiwanis, VFW and the Good Touch/Bad Touch elementary program. They even spearheaded the recent Greater Whiteland Community Day event. “We were both born and raised here, we both graduated from Whiteland and we both have huge families,” Leslie said. “Community involvement is really important to us. It always has been. Our families drilled that into us. As a result, it’s hard for us to say no to anything local. That could mean donating time, money or sponsoring something. “Of course, I don’t think I would ever promise that we won’t say no to anything because that could get out of control. But Johnson County is definitely our focus.” As far as future business expansion goes, Leslie said there are many things for Beeson Mechanical Service to consider. “We’re pretty much involved in the areas we want to be so we want to expand each appropriately,” she said. “We want to grow each area individually, but we want it to be steady, controlled growth.” B

BY THE TIME JOHN VAWTER LEFT HIS MARK, WE HAD BEEN HERE FOR 15 YEARS In November 1905, the beautiful Civil War monument at the Johnson County Courthouse was unveiled. Since “Commodore” John Vawter donated the full $20,000 cost, he opted to put his own face on it. By the time this photo was taken, Mutual had been leaving a mark of our own, helping local residents buy and build homes of their own. We think of those homes and the thousands that have followed as enduring testaments to a healthy community.

hen your child comes home with a poor report card, it usually isn’t a surprise. But, the problem is how do you remedy it? The first step is to identify the problem. This is often the most difficult step. Observing your child when studying may provide some very helpful clues. The signs and KRIEL symptoms that a vision problem is blocking learning are easy to see, when you know what to look for. Unfortunately, parents and educators assume that a child can see up-close because the child can obviously see things in the distance — like the board in the classroom, the TV, etc. They also assume everything is fine visually because the child hasn’t complained about a vision problem. Does your child avoid reading or homework? Does your child under-

One of the first signs of a vision problem that is interfering with learning is that the child has difficulty comprehending what they read yet understands the same text when someone else reads it to them. There are 17 visual skills that are required for reading and academic success, and being able to see the letters on the eye chart (20/20) is just one of those visual skills. When a child is missing one or more of these visual skills, academic performance can suffer. Most routine eye exams are not designed to test all these visual skills, so it is important to schedule a developmental vision evaluation in order to determine if a vision problem is interfering with learning. Franklin College to participate in bicentennial activities

Franklin College announced the Indiana Bicentennial Commission has endorsed its proposed event as an Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project for 2016. The event will be held on Sept. 15, 2016. It will include a public lecture by Indiana University professor James H. Madison, and an opening and dedication of a soon-to-be established archival room in the college’s B.F. Hamilton Library housing the papers and personal effects of Gov. Roger D. Branigin. Branigin was a 1923 graduate of Franklin College who served as governor of Indiana from 1965-1969. The collection will include his official papers, rare books and personal memorabilia and is a celebration of Branigin’s legacy. Madison will deliver a public lecture centered on Branigin’s significance in Indiana history in conjunction with the collection’s opening. The lecture and admission into the archival room will be free and open to the public. Indiana’s official 200th birthday is Dec. 11, 2016, but the entire state will commemorate the bicentennial in the year leading up to and during 2016 and into the future.

County Line Road. The new addition would join other recent new additions at that intersection, including Cheddar’s and Bagger Dave’s on the north side of County Line Road, east of Emerson Avenue. And by 2017, two other Zaxby’s locations could be built in Greenwood and Franklin. Currently, Zaxby’s has two locations on the north side of Indianapolis.

Two empty spots in mall to be filled

After nearly two years of being empty, two highly visible spaces at Greenwood Park Mall are being remodeled and reopened with new restaurants. American chain eatery Bar Louie and hibachi-style restaurant Kumo Japanese Steakhouse are moving into two of the three open spaces in Greenwood Park Mall’s outdoor shopping area. The two spaces have been vacant since Bravo! Cucina Italiana closed in February 2014, and Stir Crazy closed nearly three years ago. The new restaurants are planned to open in time for Thanksgiving. Currently, one restaurant location remains vacant at the mall, said David Dawson, director of marketing and business development for Simon Property Group, which owns Greenwood Park Mall. Workers have already started on renovations and installing new signs.

Local Marsh stores get $1 million in renovations

A Center Grove area supermarket has made $1 million in renovations. Marsh, at 2904 S. State Road 135, installed new fixtures and lighting, repainted, added new cases and refinished the floors, according to a company news release. The renovations come when several other grocery stores are expanding or adding new locations in Johnson County. Marsh, which closed locations in Greenwood and Franklin in recent years, has renovated other locations in the past three years, the release said.

Tara Treatment Center, Abuse Counseling and Education Inc., Turning Point Domestic Violence Services, Youth Connections of Johnson County, Haven Sanctuary for Women and Flags for Greenwood were selected to receive $2,500 each. Thirty-one nonprofit organizations applied to be in a drawing that distributes the money. Girls Inc. will use the money for an upcoming capital campaign.

New Kroger set to open this week

A new, larger grocery store has opened on the southside. The new Kroger Marketplace at County Line Road and Emerson Avenue joins four new grocery stores set to open on the southside and in Johnson County over the next few years. The Marketplace store that opened is part of a new line of stores Kroger is opening around Indiana. The store includes groceries but also has items such as furniture and clothing. Kroger already has a store at the intersection, across the street from the new store, but the new building will be twice as large. A new Marketplace store will open in Franklin and a new Kroger is planned in the Center Grove area at Smokey Row Road and State Road 135. B

Economists expect rate hike before end of year

survey of business economists finds that a majority still expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates before the end of the year, with the broader economy expected to grow at a slightly faster pace in 2015 than previously forecast. Economists now expect the gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, to rise 2.5 percent for the year, according to the survey by the National Association for Business Economics. That’s up from the previous forecast of 2.4 percent in June. The uptick is the result of a stronger-than-expected growth in the first half of the year, however. For the remainder of the year, economists lowered their forecast. For 2016, the economists also lowered their forecast to growth of 2.7 percent,

down from their prediction of 2.9 percent growth in June. The survey was based on forecasts by 50 economists and was conducted Sept. 16 to 23. Panelists continue to expect the strong U.S. dollar and the economic slowdown in China to weigh on the U.S. economy, while lower crude oil prices and monetary policy easing in Japan and Europe are expected to help. Meanwhile, 14 percent of the panelists said they think the Federal Reserve will begin a cycle of short-term interest rate increases starting at its October policy meeting. Another 65 percent expect a hike at the December meeting. Sixteen percent expect a hike in the first half of next year, and 2 percent predict a hike in 2017 or later. B

OPENING their EYES Local manufacturers give middle-schoolers view of potential careers STORY AND PHOTOS BY AMY MAY Above: Students, parents and educators explore the Process Training Unit at Endress+Hauser at the second Community Career and Education Forum on Oct. 1. any area manufacturers who set up booths at the second Community Career and Education Forum at Endress+Hauser in early October hope that among the approximately 500 middleschoolers who attended, some will one day take their place among Johnson County’s skilled workforce. The forum is a joint effort of Endress+Hauser, Central Nine Career Center and Aspire Johnson County. The purpose is to connect students, parents and educators to raise awareness and provide information about the careers and opportunities in advanced manufacturing and how science, technology, engineering and math programs can further those career goals. “This came about last year to bring together the stakeholders to collaborate on ways to help position Johnson County economically,” said Dana Monson, director of business development for Johnson County Development Corp. JCDC is charged with attracting advanced manufacturing to Johnson County.

In 10 years, they will be developing new things. This is the right generation at the right time to change the world. Tereaa Sebring,

Below: Alayna Burch, a student at Greenwood Middle School, participates in the scavenger hunt in Endress+Hauser’s Process Training Unit.

Aspire is a program of JCDC that brings together community members to explore the quality of life and education issues that benefit residents and businesses and help attract new industry. “One of the things employers look for when choosing where to locate is ‘do you have a workforce?’” Monson said. “We had employer roundtables and focus groups to look at what can we do to help (companies) with their employee pipeline.”

two-level structure showing the different ways in which the company’s products — flowmeters used in manufacturing — might be used. Brandyn Ferguson, vice president of human resources, said the room is used to train salespeople and customers. But occasionally, the company allows students inside. The room offers a unique way for students to see their math and physics lessons in action. The students were given a piece of paper with pictures of flowmeters. Their mission was to look among the various configurations of piping and find each one.

Bringing awareness Programs like the forum bring awareness to young people about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-related careers and what types of classes and continuing education they need to work someplace like Endress+Hauser, Cat Reman, Duke Energy, Advantis Medical, NSK, Nachi and Cummins Inc., all of which sent representatives to the forum. “Manufacturing has become very advanced. Bachelor’s degrees and doctorates are good, but there are great jobs that also require two-year degrees and certificates,” Monson said. Last year, 300 students from 15 area school districts participated. Nine manufacturers came. This year, more than 1,000 people RSVP’d, which included students, parents, school administrators and career counselors. Ten manufacturers attended, as did four schools — Central Nine, Ivy Tech, RoseHulman Institute of Technology and Purdue University. It’s not a job fair, but is laid out in a job fair type

There was plenty to see and touch. Every booth had a line waiting at it. Duke Energy brought a truck and set up some mock power lines to demonstrate how its electricians might repair or maintain its infrastructure. Many companies gave away prizes, including little toys and mementos. Cat Reman, a Franklin division of Caterpillar that rebuilds large engines, also brought a V8 F-350 truck engine. Jerry Castner of Cat Reman said it attracted lots of attention. “This STEM event allows us to show people what we do and how we do it,” Castner said. Cat Reman uses technical manuals to teach how to rebuild each type of engine. The company needs people who are proficient with engines and can follow the instructions to disassemble, clean, inspect and re-machine the engine according to the company’s standards, he said. november 2015 I southside business exchange

In the past, farm kids grew up comfortable around engines, often being required to repair things, Castner said. Today, there isn’t as much farming, and kids aren’t growing up with this knowledge. “We need mechanical understanding in youth today,” he said. Endress+Hauser’s booth included a video that talked about the importance of STEM education, as well as lots of literature about the company and the future of STEM-related jobs. Gillian Lynch, of Endress+Hauser human resources, and Teresa Sebring of the Measurement Control & Automation Association, a trade group for companies like Endress+Hauser, staffed the booth. “We want to give them an awareness of everything, including what makes automation cool,” Lynch said. “When you talk about this side of engineering, their eyes just light up.” “In 10 years, they will be developing new things,” Sebring added. “This is the right generation at the right time to change the world.”

In-depth understanding They added that technical proficiency is not just important to work on the production floor. At Endress+Hauser and many advanced manufacturing plants, even the sales people need an in-depth understanding of the technology they are selling. They also stressed that educators still need to teach “soft skills.” “The tech degree will get you to the table, but you need to be able to sell yourself,” Sebring said. Ferguson said Endress+Hauser and the other manufacturers didn’t host the program to look for future staff, but as a way to help the community. “This is not a career fair, but a long-term investment of time and care to get students interested in careers they never thought of and generate conversa-

tion. This is about long-term relationships. We’re going to leave a legacy doing that.” The United States, he said, is facing a dearth of future technological talent, so it’s important to get young people thinking about careers in those fields. “Let’s start when the kids are still young and impressionable; start a conversation about what work will look like in the future. Obviously there’s a need and an interest. We didn’t know 1,000 people would show up,” he said. Nicole Otte, assistant director of Central Nine Career Center, agreed. “This is a great opportunity to pull parents and students together to see what manufacturing is today. It’s an awareness piece. This is not your dad’s version of manufacturing. They need to know about it.” Many people think manufacturing jobs are dirty, assembly-line work, so parents and educators will steer many kids toward college. But today’s manufacturing is safer and cleaner and requires technical expertise and engineering skills that require vocational-technical education. “JCDC has promoted Central Nine as a real piece in the community. A lot of people say it’s a hidden gem,” Otte said. “We’ve been telling kids to go to college. Not that college is a bad thing, but if you want a career in engineering or technology, this is the way to get there. “So many people go to college, study something, but then don’t find a career. Everybody’s got to have a career. We’re getting it across to the parents, too. They have a big impact on choices.”

Health care forum Aspire Johnson County is also planning a second forum to encourage kids to think about STEM careers in health care. These could include everything from hospital accountants to technicians who repair or operate equipment and even the people who invent and design new medical devices and diagnostic tools. “There are such a variety of careers in the health care sector that people don’t know about,” Monson said. “There are more than doctors and nurses in the medical field.” STEM is becoming a popular topic in education circles nowadays, and most areas schools have taken steps to improve STEM offerings and offer fun programs like robotics clubs and computer courses. “(The forum) is taking some of the things these kids do and love doing and showing them ‘you can also have a career doing this.’ It’s getting them to think about it as a potential job and then how to get qualified to do it,” Monson said. How to protect your firm from suspicious emails

I have a small brokerage firm and we are getting more and more suspicious email. How can I tell if an email is legit or not? How can I prevent my employees from getting duped? Can this cause harm to my business’s computers or damage data? More than 90 percent of data breaches are caused by malicious emails targeting employees or executives. There are entire criminal organizations who are devoted to researching high value targets such as CEOs, CFOs, brokers and employees. They will watch your social media posts, sneak into your network, and watch the email conversations and routines — and then impersonate someone you trust. It is very important to stop them at

the front door by learning what to look for and staying aware of tactics as they evolve. There are several ways to tell if an email is legitimate or not, which require you to pay close attention to often-overlooked details: ● Is the email from someone you expected it from? In other words, is this a normal type of email from someone you regularly get email from? It is OK to question it, and chances are, if it looks a bit “off” or weird, it is. When in doubt, throw it out. ● Was the email generated during normal business hours? If not, treat it as suspicious. ● Does it ask you to click on a link or open an attachment? If so, hover over the link without opening it to see if it is coming from the same place it is supposedly

being sent from. As an example, the email might appear to come from a bank or other brokerage firm, but when you hover over the link, it does not mention the bank or firm and has some trumped-up domain or address. The likelihood of this being a dangerous link is high. ● Does the email have transposed letters or typos in the “from” address, subject line, message or links? Read carefully. Stu Sjouwerman, CEO of information technology security company KnowBe4 and author of “Cyberheist,” offers the following tips: ● When in doubt, throw it out. You can always call the sender to verify the email was sent from them, especially where wire instructions or financial information is

concerned. Emails can easily be faked as coming from a known address (this is called spoofing). ● Don’t open any links or attachments you did not ask for. It is much easier to have an IT pro check it for you than to lose money or confidential personal information. But the best insurance is to enroll your employees in a security awareness training program. A good program will test employees frequently using simulated phishing attacks to keep them on their toes.
