"Why do you spell 'Almanack' wrong?" By Sara Clifford

Wild and Wonderful Brown County

See what you've been missing in Brown County's outdoor activities on page 45.

Generally Speaking

Lost in the back roads of Brown County, these general stores are out of the way oasis for locals and tourists alike. Find out more about them on page 32.

Well, it’s a tradition. “Kin” Hubbard, creator of those cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality. Hubbard published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since. Sara Clifford has been taking a shine to ol' Abe and his cartoon cronies since becoming editor of the Democrat last fall and reading up on local history. To regale her with local lore, offer opinions or hurl complaints, you can find her at the Democrat office on Main Street most hours of the day and most days of the week.

For More than Just Bare Feet

Brown County Sock Factory was Mother's Gift to Son

By Tom Lotshaw HELMSBURG – Socks are a family tradition in this northern Brown County burg. It’s where For Bare Feet has grown for 20-plus years — from a mother-and-son shop in Nashville making socks on an antique knitting machine, to a manufacturing facility with more than 100 modern knitting machines making socks that find their way onto feet all over the United States. Sharon Rivenbark started the shop in April 1984 after learning that her 16-year-old son Tim was seriously ill and destined to become mentally disabled. She was a fifth-grade teacher at Sprunica Elementary at the time. “After an operation, the doctors told me I needed to start finding some kind of occupational therapy stuff for Tim to do,” Rivenbark said. “That’s when I started looking for a shop in Nashville. After going through several different options I came up with socks.” She meant for the business to be Tim’s place in the world. With a $1,200 loan from her parents, Rivenbark bought an old Banner knitting machine, an early 1900s contraption still on display at For Bare Feet. She and Tim learned how to run the knitting machine and rented a

12- by 15-foot shop on Antique Alley, hoping just to break even. Colorful plywood footprints led customers along the sidewalk and back to that first For Bare Feet. There, people could see Rivenbark and Tim running the Banner and making striped tube socks on a small pedestal in the front window. “In 1984, tube socks were the way to go,” Rivenbark said. Business was good, supported by tourists and locals. But Rivenbark soon found customers wanted more than the “long honking tubes” popular at the time, and more of all kinds of socks than she and Tim could make. Women wanted anklet socks. Everyone wanted sparkly socks like the ones worn by Michael Jackson, she said. Demand for the socks outpaced the antique knitting machine’s capabilities in about four months. Running the business on a yearlong leave of absence from school, Rivenbark found another company that agreed to produce her designs to help keep For Bare Feet stocked. The school district refused to grant a second leave of absence. Rivenbark had to decide between her teaching career and the young

but growing sock shop. “I was scared,” she said. “I was divorced with kids, so the business was now going to have to not just break even but make money to support the family. So I thought, ‘OK, I’m just going to go for it because, what do I do, just let Tim go?’” Tim fell ill and had to undergo an emergency operation on Christmas Day in 1986. He never spoke again and died in January 1987. After Tim died, the company that had agreed to help Rivenbark make socks said it didn’t want to make any more. “At that point, it was like, ‘This business has got to succeed. It’s what we have left of Tim and there’s no way it’s ever going to go away,’” Rivenbark said. Rivenbark bought several more knitting machines. Early on, For Bare Feet was licensed to make socks with the IU logo for the IU bookstore. Several sororities and fraternities asked Rivenbark to make socks with their Greek letters. A man at Simon Mall asked to sell For Bare Feet socks at a kiosk, which was a success. And Rivenbark continued to attend trade shows. Soon, salespeople were asking if they could sell her popular socks while out on the road. For Bare Feet survived. “From there it was a determination that nothing was going to happen to this business,” Rivenbark said. “It was going to be successful. It was going to be a legacy that Tim left.” In the year since, For Bare Feet has done more than survive. It has thrived. Today, the company is headquartered in the old schoolhouse on Feet continued on page 21

Feet continued from page 20 State Road 45 in Helmsburg. It has 110,000 square feet of manufacturing space with additional storage and shipping space, along with its corporate offices. It employs 130-

150 people, making it one of Brown County’s largest employers. A sports division of For Bare Feet makes socks, headbands and wristbands for players in the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL, as well as sports outlets like Foot Locker and Finish Line. A novelty division generates hundreds of thousands of designs and sells socks to places like the San Diego and Washington zoos, Yosemite National Park and Kennedy Space Center. A separate For Bare Feet retail division has two stores in Nashville and additional stores in Estes Park, Colo., Frankenmuth, Mich., Gatlinburg, Tenn., and

Eureka Springs, Ark. “We’re nationwide,” Rivenbark said. “I don’t like to give any numbers because it gives people an idea of what the company is doing, but suffice to say we make millions and millions of socks a year.” Although Tim is gone, other family members have joined to help the sock business and his legacy survive. Rivenbark’s son-in-law, Karl Mills, was one of the first to join the company after he earned a degree in computer science. Her daughter Kelly started helping at age 14 and is now the national sales manager. Kelly’s husband, Dave, is vice president of graphic

design. Rivenbark’s other daughters Tina and Mandy also joined the business, as have their husbands. Tina is vice president of operations and Mandy is president. “She’s president because I’m getting old enough that I need to start thinking about letting other people learn everything I’ve been doing and let go,” Rivenbark said. “That has been one of the hardest things in my life. But it’s been a very positive thing for the whole company because it has gotten stronger as a result.” Even grandchildren have started working for the company. There are 19 in all. “It’s family,” Rivenbark said. “The family is together, and Tim is with us every day.” Tom Lotshaw is a reporter for the Brown County Democrat, the county’s only newspaper and publisher of the Brown County Almanack.

General continued from page 30 The store also caters. Like most outlying stores, Stevens said, she offers deer and turkey check-in for hunters. The creek behind the store is a popular gold panning location, too. Basic kits rent for $4 a day, and most supplies can also be bought there. “Clean family fun – I guess that’s what you’d call it,” Stephens said. The creek and its banks are also a good place for geode and fossil hunting. The grounds also house nine camping spots, mostly used by prospectors, that accommodate tents and trailers. Electricity costs $15, and primitive sites go for a donation to keeping the port-o-lets maintained. How it started: “When I was a kid, there was the neatest little store in Helmsburg called Mary Long’s ... and I always just loved it when I was kid, so I decided it’s what I wanted to do,” said Stevens, who worked for years in the hotel and restaurant businesses. She’s owned and operated the Gatesville store for 8½ years. While you’re there: There’s not much in Gatesville, aside from “two sawmills and a handful of residents,” Stevens said. But with the gold panning and camping at the store, a family could make a day of it. Stevens noted that the store is on the way to AppleWorks, and that the Flower and Herb Barn is nearby.

Crouch’s also sells gas. The market is one of the few places in Brown County outside the town of Nashville that does that. How it started: “We started 37 years ago,” Crouch said. Her husband grew up truck farming and around his parents’ tanning factory, but when his health kept him out of a factory job, he and Norma started selling produce from their front yard. “As we started, everybody well, ‘I wish you carried this, and carried that,’” Crouch said, about the business’ gradual expansion into Crouch’s Feed and Bait. “…So we just kept adding as the need arose. We saved up and worked hard,” she said. When the store began to sell more groceries and produce, the name changed to Crouch’s Market. While you’re there: Crouch’s is in Van Buren Township, close to the tourist spots of Stone Head, Story and the Brown County State Park Horseman’s Camp. Because the market is in one of the more remote areas of the county, it’s also surrounded by places popular with hunters and fishermen.

you’ve got to have a variety,” said owner Norma Crouch. “Because if they have to go in for one thing, then they go in town for all of it.” The grocery shelves at Crouch’s Market are stocked with bread and milk to ice cream, crackers and canned and boxed goods. They sell seasonal vegetables from their garden, and bring in other produce from Morgantown. There’s hardware, live bait, greeting cards, toiletries, and pet supplies. They rent DVDs and check in deer and turkey during hunting seasons. Norma’s husband, Harry, handcrafts walking sticks that can be purchased in the store. es are immediately obvious to Brown County residents and visitors, with the county making up one of the largest swaths of forested land in Indiana. Other resources and attractions are not so obvious, tucked backed in the hills and hollows off the beaten path. More traditional outdoor activities include fishing on area streams, Lake Monroe and Lake Lemon; bird watching; hiking, camping and hunting; and horseback and mountain bike riding. Other lesser known activities include gold panning and geode hunting. And with some of Indiana’s largest parks – Brown County State Park, Yellowwood State Forest and Hoosier National Forest – there’s never much of a lull in the number of outdoor activities available in Brown County. People interested in taking longer hikes over the course of several days can take on Tecumseh Trail. The 50-plus mile trail runs through Morgan Monroe State Forest and Yellowwood State Forest and ends in Hoosier National Forest in southern Brown County, passing through some of Brown County’s most scenic and isolated areas. “We’ve got the best of both worlds,” Dunbar said. “We’ve got so much we want to tell people about that the biggest challenge is just letting people know what all there is to do. General continued from page 32 and Morgantown Hours: 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday. A little bit of everything: The Fruitdale Market is one of the few places outside Nashville locations that sells gas and diesel fuel. It’s also a deer and turkey check-in station. Fishing supplies and live bait are available, too. The store has fountain and fresh coffee drinks, as well as snacks, sodas and other staples like bread, milk and paper towels. How it started: The Guffeys bought the market last fall. “That market’s been there for a long time and, we just thought, ‘Well, you know, we could open it up and be convenient for everybody,’” said Debbie Guffey. They gave the shop a good cleaning and reworked the in-

side, and have been serving the public since January. “We like to help people out, and that’s why we have Brown County Tire and we have Fruitdale Market,” Guffey said. “It’s a nice location,” said, talking about the customers who have come in thanking them for reopening the store, which was closed for more than a year before the purchased it. “It’s just a good neighborhood, too.” While you’re there: The Fruitdale Market falls about halfway between Nashville and Morgantown. It’s a few miles down the road from the Bill Monroe Music Park & Campground, which has a country music hall of fame and hosts seasonal music festivals. Brownie’s Bean Blossom Inn Restaurant is also nearby. Nashville and Morgantown offer shops and restaurants for visitors, and State Road 135 North is a popular path for mo-

torcyclists.

Brown County Outdoor Supply Co.

Owner: Dan “Butch” Carteaux Location: State Road 46 West in Belmont, between Nashville and Bloomington Hours: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday A little bit of everything: The Brown County Outdoor Supply Co. fills the convenience and outdoor needs of customers.
