Brown County Fair Queen
The Brown County Fair Queen Contest is open to girls between the ages of 16 and 20. • The queen will be chosen at the fair Sunday, July 24, at 8 p.m. in the Pavilion on the fairgrounds. • For more information about the competition, contact Debbie Larsh at or 988-4483 or deborah.larsh@yahoo.com. • Forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Extension Office. • Each contestant must be at least 16 and cannot have had her 21st birthday as of Aug. 5, the first day of the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant. • Contestants must be residents of Brown County. • Each contestant must be an active member of at least one organization in her community, such as church group, 4-H, Scouts, etc. • It is the responsibility of each contestant to obtain her own sponsor. Sponsor fees are $50 and will be used to defray the expenses of the pageant. The deadline to be registered is July 15. • The 2011 Brown County Fair queen, first and second runners-up and other contestants are expected to be present and assist throughout the fair. • No professional model is eligible. (A professional model is one who earns her livelihood by modeling.) A contestant who has had training or schooling in the modeling field, has been paid on occasion for modeling, or works for a fashion board is not considered a professional model. • Any contestant who has competed in a state fair queen pageant cannot compete again. • The winner of the 2011 Brown County Fair Queen Pageant will represent Brown County in the state fair queen pageant, if she meets the state fair queen pageant eligibility requirements. (Contestants for the state fair queen contest must be unmarried and must never have been married, they may not have children or knowingly be pregnant at the time of the state fair pageant). If the winner does not meet eligibility requirements, then the first runner-up will represent Brown County at the state fair pageant. If the first runner-up does not meet state fair pageant eligibility requirements, than the second runner-up will represent Brown County at the state fair pageant. If the second runnerup does not meet state fair pageant eligibility requirements, then Brown County will not have a representative at the state fair pageant. • Under no circumstances will it be allowed for the contestant to consume or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at any queen activity or during the fair. In addition, the use of tobacco products, regardless of age, is not permitted at any queen activity or during the fair. • Contestants will conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful manner, exhibit good sportsmanship, and demonstrate reasonable conflict management skills. • If any of the rules and responsibilities listed above are not followed by the contestant, the fair queen chairperson and the Fair Board Executive Committee have the right to disqualify the contestant from the pageant. • Contestants will be judged on the basis of poise, personality and the ability to converse. The judging is divided into three divisions: Interview: Attire is a dress or suit. Each contestant will have three minutes alone before the judges. She will answer impromptu questions asked by the judges. Evening gown: Attire is a long evening gown. At least one portion of the evening gown’s hemline needs to be floor length. A gown with the skirt split above the knee, a low-cut bodice and/or cut design is inappropriate for the pageant and may be discounted by the judges. Professional wear: Attire is a suit or dress. Pant suits or pant separates will not be allowed. The suit does not have to be the same fabric; separates are allowed. • Points and score sheets are for the judges’ assessment only. Final selection is the judges’ decision.

Open Class GENERAL RULES
County fair competition is separate from state fair competition. County winners DO NOT automatically advance to the state fair. The entry deadline for state fair is July 1. For more information, call the Extension Office at 988-5495. Entries are open to all residents of Brown County or members of a Brown County organization. Entries can be made in each class of any section. Where specific rules apply, they will be noted under individual categories. “Miscellaneous” is only for the articles where there is no specific category. (More than one entry can be made in “Miscellaneous” providing they are different.) Entries must be completed or grown by the exhibitor since the previous Brown County

Fair (except Photography). The 4-H Fair Association will not be responsible for any exhibit. However, hostesses will be on duty to protect exhibits. All exhibits (except Floriculture, Gardening, Food Preparation and Food Preservation) must be entered Saturday, July 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. Late entries can be made Monday, July 25 from 9-10 a.m. All Floriculture and Gardening, Food Preservation and Food Preparation exhibits must be entered Monday, July 25 from 10 a.m. until noon. If an exhibitor earns their livelihood or makes $1,200 or more in a year in an individual section they wish to enter, a “P” will be added to their section number to indicate they are a professional. This is to make the judge aware of their experience in comparison with an amateur exhibitor. Exhibits must be claimed Saturday, July 30 from 2-5 p.m. Exhibits can NOT be removed between the time of official ENTRY and RELEASE. Exhibits will NOT be released before 2 p.m. The 4-H Fair Association is not responsible for exhibits left after release time. The Danish system of judging (where a project is judged on its own merit by certain guidelines) will be used and each placing will be determined by the judge according to the quality of the exhibits. Any number of first, second or third places may be awarded. All exhibits will be marked with a ribbon to designate the placing following the judging according to the official records. No monetary awards are given. A Champion and Reserve Champion ribbon will be awarded from the blue ribbon winners in each section, providing there are at least three blue ribbons in the section. Honorable Mention ribbons will be awarded when merited.
No one will be allowed to watch the judging except those officially designated. Youth have the opportunity to exhibit in any of the Open Class categories.
