Hopkins’ paintings on display Brown County artist Anabel Hopkins has a solo exhibit of new abstract paintings at the Chateau Thomas Winery during October.

Hopkins is a member of Hoosier Artist gallery and has abstract paintings currently showing in juried exhibitions at the Hoosier Salon and the Midwest National Abstract Show. She is a juried member of the Indiana Artisan project.

She will be present to discuss her work during the Second Saturday Village Art Walk (Oct. 13) at the winery.

Graf work at BC Art Gallery

Sta reports Two gifts have been presented to the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation: One to delight visitors and the other to help preserve and foster the county’s rich art heritage.

A rare, decorative screen painted by Brown County artist Carl Graf has been placed on permanent loan to the gallery foundation by members of the Graf family. It will be on display in the gallery lobby in time for the 2012 Collectors' Showcase Oct. 13 and 14.

The screen, which depicts a favorite Indiana subject, “Peonies� was handed down by Graf’s sister, Josephine, to a niece, who in turn is putting the historic screen on permanent loan to the foundation. Nan Graf remembers visiting her great aunt, and the screen always sat in her guest bedroom. Local art conservator Sue McAllister restored the screen to its original beauty.

Decorative screens date back to Asia, but became popular in western society in the mid-1800s. Most well-appointed homes had decorative screens which were used as room dividers and as a way to control air flow. Artists soon discovered that painting such screens was another way to increase income. Carl Graf was particularly talented at screens, and he was a talented mural painter as well.

The screen is from a Graf family collection, part of which will be offered for sale Friday, Nov. 16, with proceeds to benefit the gallery foundation.

The second gift is a grant from the Brown County Arts and Culture Commission in the amount of $1,200. The donation will be designated for future expansion plans currently under way.
