The Magic of Perception As I wrote my editor’s note for this issue, my mother had just walked around The Cloisters in New York City. A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cloisters museum and garden is a space devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. It houses pieces that date (largely) from the 12th through the 15th centuries. Of the collection, the Unicorn Tapestries might be the most well-known. Made at some point in the 1450s by an unknown artist for an unknown rich patron, the tapestries are still referenced nearly 600 years later.

Google “Cloisters” and “The Unicorn in Captivity,” and what is perhaps the most famous of the tapestry series comes up. The piece depicts a European unicorn, that is, an amalgamation of a horse and a goat, with a lion’s tail, leaning against a young, thin tree. Someone has captured the unicorn. What I like most about the tapestry is the rather matter-of-fact vibe accompanying it. Yes, it’s a unicorn; for the folks of the Middle Ages, unicorns and the magic that accompanied them existed.

As I pictured my mother standing in The Cloisters (and, I’m sure, slyly taking illegal photos of the tapestries before sneaking her iPhone 5s back into her purse), I thought about all of the magic and mystery that existed in the world. This was a time before everything crystallized into fact. If you whipped out a smartphone to tell a medieval person what character actor just had a cameo in the blockbuster movie you were watching, you would have been burned at the stake for witchcraft.

Magic is about perception and worldview.

This isn’t the first time in recent days that I’ve thought about magic. My end of the summer reading included S.C. Gwynne’s “Empire of the Summer Moon,” about the settlers’ fight with the fierce Comanche Indians. Cynthia Ann Parker, the white mother of Quanah Parker, one of the last great Comanche leaders, had been captured as a child and adopted into one of the tribe’s bands.

In 1860, Cynthia Anne was captured again and brought back to what was now a foreign culture. She went from the Comanche cosmology, in which waterways were teeming with spirits and omens, and magic lurked around every corner, to being stuffed into a corset. She died in 1871, of pneumonia, in a world depleted of magic.

This editor’s note is not an argument against fact or science; Columbus is a town built on feats of science and art. I would like to make an argument for embracing the air of mystery that surrounds fall. There is little that is more dynamic than fall in the south central Indiana region; I like to think of our autumns as a mix of fact (this is what nature does) and magic (this is the vibe it gives). The days will get shorter. Another harvest will come in. Leaves will erupt into gorgeous colors. The air will turn crisp, and we will don our jackets as we walk around, taking it all in.

With every issue of Columbus magazine, I find new magic in this city; magic, as I noted earlier, is about perception, and I choose to see a lot of Columbus as magical. From the generosity of Mugdha Naik (p. 42) who donated her art to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children, to the healing hands of area doctors who treat thyroid conditions (p. 50), to the incredibly fun use of space in Chris Price’s downtown condo (p. 62), Columbus is full of magic for us to uncover.

I hope you uncover some magic this season as well.

Riding the Rails Stop in at Seymour’s Rails Craft Brew & Eatery and you’ll find hearty American fare, a slew of craft brews and a warm and friendly environment that make this cozy restaurant worth the trip. Menu offerings include beer cheese (a blend of sharp cheddar cheese, infused with garlic, peppers and flavored with hearty malts); Maryland crab cakes; and the 50/50 burger (a half-and-half combination of Applewood smoked bacon and certified Angus beef ground together, then grilled and served on a toasted Hawaiian roll).

You can get your dinner with wine or soda, but the restaurant’s big star is the craft beer. The staggering beer menu includes ales, lagers, stouts, porters and ginger beers. Fabulous at Forty UnCommon Cause, the Columbus Area Arts Council’s largest fundraiser, is also one of Columbus’ longest-running events.

Founded in 1976 and usually held in The Commons, the event returns this year with a “Fabulous at Forty” theme.

The elegant evening includes a live and silent auction, dinner and dancing.

Music is by Indy band Zanna-doo; the event’s colors, says coordinator Geri Handley, will be silvery gray, red, white and black.

The dinner menu, as lovingly nuanced as many of the arts council’s events, was composed

by Dan Grunden, executive chef at Harrison Lake Country Club, and is a celebration in its own right. It opens with a salad of honey and poached pear, fig, duck breast, frisse and bacon vinaigrette.

Salad is followed by pan-roasted Merino lamb loin with huckleberry compote, pea and mint puree, white truffle whipped potatoes and smoked micro vegetables. The repast ends with a spread of gourmet cupcakes with assorted liquor pipettes.

“I really think the arts are one of the most important things in everyone’s life,” Handley says.

“UnCommon Cause helps the arts council provide a lot of free programming. It benefits people in so many ways.”

A Global Affair Pakistan serves as the host country for this year’s Ethnic Expo, Columbus’ annual showcase of world culture. Organized in large part by groups under the Columbus Area Multi-Ethnic Organization umbrella, it features food, cultural exhibits and entertainment. In its 32nd year, the two-day event attracts more than 30,000 people to City Hall, where attendees can sample foods prepared by residents who hail from around the world. Founded in 1984, the event celebrates the city’s diverse ethnic heritage by presenting customs imported from around the globe.

The great pumpkin Celebrating Heritage with Hope Hop in the car and pop in at Hope Heritage Days for concerts, food, crafts, a parade and more. Now in its 48th year, it is Bartholomew County’s largest and oldest multiday festival. Often described as the quintessential small-town festival, it also serves as Hope’s largest fundraising event, with many local nonprofits selling food and wares to benefit their organizations.

The 2015 celebration bears forward-looking theme “Don’t Stop Thinking about Tomorrow,” but the festival will still open with the traditional Gospel Sing the evening of Sept. 25 and close Sept. 27 with the God & Country Rally at Hope Moravian Church.

It’s hard to think of a kind of produce more heavily tied to autumn than the pumpkin. Orange, cheery and a great material for sculptural endeavors, you know why this gourd is great, now you just need to know where to get it. Columbus is ripe with places to pick up your pumpkin.

with Daniel Klingler Columbus native and professional makeup artist Daniel Klingler is the author behind “Idiot’s Guides: Everyday Makeup Secrets.”

The lavishly illustrated 250-page tome, published by Alpha, a division of Penguin Random House, features tips for choosing the best makeup for your features and step-by-step lessons for creating contemporary looks. Klingler, who lives in Indy and owns the Broad Ripple salon Neck Up Designs, has also created and crafted hair and makeup for theatrical productions in the United States and the United Kingdom.

How did you get the book deal? I went to school with the acquisitions editor for DK publishing. We were talking at a class reunion several years ago here, talking about what we do. She said she was in publishing.

I said, ‘Oh, I’ve always wanted to write a book. A couple of years later, she called me and said, “We want to find a makeup artist to write a book.”

How does it feel to be a published author? It’s really exciting.

Twenty years ago I together put a bucket list of things I wanted to accomplish and writing a book was on it. When I was younger, I read a lot of Danielle Steele, so I didn’t know what the book would look like. I just wanted to put something creative out into the universe, and the opportunity came to me. It’s really overwhelming to see something you created in print. It’s international; it will be in bookstores in the U.K., Canada and Australia. I love education, that’s my passion, and I really approached writing this book from an educational standpoint.

How so? As consumers, we’re so inundated with all these product lines and makeup. They, makeup companies, are constantly trying to create the new “it” product, and yet, on average, American women only use three products a day. I was just in Korea in September, and they wear 10 makeup items a day on average. I’m really trying to help women go into Walgreens or Sephora and educate themselves.

Where are most women getting their makeup products? I think it depends on their budget. I have the best products because I have clients. I will a grab Maybelline from Walgreens for my mascara because it’s great. I say mix and match. You can get a black eye pencil for a couple of dollars that’s fine, then layer in Kat Von D’s Tattoo.

Who are your makeup inspirations? And how would you describe your aesthetic? My No. 1 makeup inspiration is Kevyn Aucoin.

He has books called “Face Forward” and “Making Faces,” and I have owned those for years. He represents my aesthetic, which I call “theatrical beauty.” That’s really the marriage between my love for theater and beauty. When I’m doing beauty makeup for a bride or in a photo shoot, I love to transform her look in subtle ways. In theater, I love doing dramatic changes. But my aesthetic always leans toward beauty.

For most customers

the process of buying a drink, be it a cocktail or glass of wine, is succinct. They head into their favorite restaurant, scan the menu, select and order their vino or spirits. The drink shows up tableside, and they consume it, as consumers do.

But this is only the front-of-the-house experience. The true system of locating, selecting and purchasing alcoholic beverages for bricks-and-mortar establishments has become an art in a burgeoning, ever-evolving industry.

“It’s an ongoing, everyday business, with new products coming through the door for us to try,” says Warren Scheidt, co-owner of Cork Liquors. “It changes all the time, and it’s amazing that so many people have gotten into the business worldwide.

They’re just everywhere.”

Whether the venue is a full-service butcher shop, a retailer dealing solely in wine, liquor and beer, or an upscale restaurant that stocks fewer than 100 bottles, there’s a time-honored selection system that goes on long before the consumer pops the cork.

The process is more than a shot in the dark. Here’s how three local spots go about selecting their wine and spirits. But first, some background.

Getting the legalities out of the way To understand the wine and liquor industry is to understand the three-tier distribution system that mandates distributors’ involvement.

“The third tier is the seller, whether a restaurant, bar or retailer,” Scheidt says. “The second is the wholesaler who buys directly from producers and then wholesales products to retailers, and the first is the producer, whether it’s Gallo Winery or (Columbus-based brewery) 450North. In theory, we can’t buy directly from them; we have to go through the wholesaler.”

The system hails from the days of Prohibition. In 1919, Congress passed the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The amendment prohibited manufacture, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in the United States; the Volstead Act was passed the same year to enforce the amendment’s intent.

Prohibition was repealed in 1933 with the passage of the 21st Amendment, which Indiana ratified on June 26, 1933. According to the Heartland Institute, the regulation system was set in place more than 80 years ago, allegedly protecting consumers, limiting consumption, preventing monopolization by manufacturers and retailers, and providing a reliable method of tax collection.

The three-tier system of alcohol distribution in the United Sates has been in place ever since.

Warren Scheidt says the business stocks thousands of bottles; he maintains contracts with about a dozen distributors. Deciding which products to offer is an ongoing challenge. Decisions are made in tandem with trusted and knowledgeable distributors, along with taste testing by staff.

“What one person likes, to another is just terrible,” he says. “That’s why you want to have as wide a selection as you can: So they can find something they like.”

The stores’ vast inventory allows the retailer to offer both recognized and specialty products, Scheidt says. “We carry common brands because people want what they recognize. It’s a big part of the market,” he says.

The push behind the craft and specialty markets is today’s consumer, who can be an adventurous sort when it comes to trying flavors. “It’s kind of like craft beers. Ten, 15, 20 years ago, people just bought what they liked,” Scheidt says. “Now they want to try new things, have new experiences.”

This has created a market for smaller producers, but even big producers are constantly coming up with new blends. There’s an endless line of new products, but there comes a time for every business when it reaches the saturation point with shelf space at a premium.

As for taste testing, Scheidt says he participates only once in a while. “I don't necessarily do that, but have employees who do,” he says.

Wine and Swine Three years ago, Lisa Abendroth opened The Savory Swine, an urbane full-service butcher and deli on Washington Street downtown. Open for lunch and for evening charcuterie parties, The Swine staff is more than happy to sell you a glass

or bottle of wine to go with that cheese.

Abendroth, who stocks between 50 to 60 different wines, looks for hard-to-find varietals. If you can buy a varietal at Kroger or CVS, she’s not likely to give it shelf space.

“My customer draw is my high-end meat,” she says. “They want a high-end bottle of wine to go with that. I offer wines from throughout the world, cabernets and merlots, a lot from the West Coast, along with European and South American wines.”

The Swine’s wines come from points all over the globe, with the exception of Indiana, Abendroth says. It’s nothing personal, she says; Hoosier wines are easy to find in state. It’s about exposure to new wines.

“My customers appreciate when wine comes from different areas of the world and they can learn to know and appreciate the different tastes,” she says. “So it doesn’t have to be a recognizable label.”

Deciding what customers want and what will sell is a matter of trust: trust that you know your customer base and trust in the distributor, she says. To find her wines, Abendroth goes through a wine distributor, the Fishers-based Carroll Wine & Spirits, which specializes in brands not offered at big box venues; Carroll caters to boutique venues.

The relationship has been good since Day 1, Abendroth says.

“My salesperson visits me every week,” she says. “There’s not really a science to it. We just sit down and taste, talk about the wine’s origins and the winemaker, and if we think we can sell it.”

In the end, the selection process can boil down to a feeling. “Wine is very subjective. I don’t have a chart by which I evaluate it. It’s

about the quality,” Abendroth says. “If my store manager and I like the story, it has wonderful flavor and looks great, more than likely we’re going to offer it to our customers.”

Join the Club One of the hallmarks of a successful restaurant is a wine and cocktails menu that blends with the overall concept. Henry Social Club, a 75-seat restaurant that opened on Washington Street downtown in November, attracts patrons seeking a farm-to-table experience with an upscale ambience. HSC beverage director Matthew Gordon uses his 14 years of experience in the liquor industry to create a drink menu that reflects the venue’s vibe.

From his vantage point behind the bar, Gordon sees just how well his selections are received. He works with about six wine distributors, in addition to two or three liquor wholesalers.

“I always try to think what (customers

would) be into, and if I could sell it to them,” Gordon says. “There’s always a little bit of risk, because every salesman will have a spiel, and sometimes you don’t know if a product will sell until you’ve gotten it. I taste it and try to think about it beforehand.”

Shelf space also dictates the restaurant’s inventory. Behind the bar are 80 bottles of wine and spirits. “We’re trying to shy away from huge brands, so the smaller distributors seek us out to show off their wares,” Gordon says.

“We try to offer things that are a little unusual, understanding there are familiar brands we’ll have to say ‘no’ to.”

Wine buying has a strategy to it, he says, mainly in covering the basics requests: pinots of both hues, sauvignon blancs and zinfandel.

Though Gordon stocks the bar with local beer, he doesn’t stock Indiana wines. Sometimes, he says, patrons will bring back recommendations picked up during their travels, which he is happy to stock.

“Hopefully, our broker is able to get that particular varietal,” he says.

When selecting a house wine, Gordon says he seeks input from HSC owner and chef, Gethin Thomas, to ensure they’re all on the same page.

“We talk about it and look at the price,” Gordon says. “Is it something that can roll off the tongue easily? Something that hasn’t been around town a lot? Almost every vendor has something that could fit that list, so we assess where we are and select something not too bizarre but not too boring.”

The bottom line in buying wine and spirits is to try to get to know the product as best you can, Gordon says.

“Smell it, drink it and think about it and [decide] if you have room for it,” he says. “Occasionally, if someone’s in the shop, you might get their opinion, too.”

Still, he says, “There’s always a bit of a chance you take when you’re ordering.”

With its pink-and-gold decorative caresses, sweeping French-style chandeliers and blossom-lined walls, The Cake Bake Shop wraps visitors in a sugary-sweet embrace. Owner Gwendolyn Rogers, who went from baking mom to businesswoman, opened the shop in November. Her cakes have been featured in films including “Man Down,” starring Shia LaBeouf, and “Dum and Dummer To.” Rogers’ cakes also make appearances at downtown Indianapolis’ highly acclaimed St. Elmo Steakhouse, and soon you’ll be able to purchase The Cake Bake Shop confections at Kroger grocery stores across the country.

In 2007 Circle City Sweets made a home in Indianapolis’ historic City Market, an indoor market featuring rows of food vendors. Among them, you’ll find Circle City Sweets, owned and operated by pastry enthusiast Cindy Hawkins.

She grew up baking with her mom, who is now one of her employees. Circle City Sweets menu offerings include brownies, blondies, muffins and yeast breads. If you can’t get enough of Hawkins’ giant sugar cookies or her buttery croissants, you can also sign up for one of her pastry classes and learn how to do it yourself.

The Flying Cupcake’s first location opened in 2007 in Indy’s Broad Ripple neighborhood. Owner Kate Bova Drury’s original shop has a 1950 shabby chic vibe with pastel colors and old-fashioned wallpaper. Eight years later, The Flying Cupcake concept has expanded to five locations in the Indianapolis area, and locals know to keep an eye out for Petunia and Penelope, the business’s mobile units.

The cupcake shop has more than 60 flavors to choose from. “Red velvet Elvis is our signature flavor; we sell thousands of those a week,” says manager Emily Hunter. Also popular: Pretty in pink, a strawberry cupcake with strawberry cream cheese swirls; salted chocolate caramel, a chocolate cupcake filled with caramel topped with a rich chocolate caramel ganache; and zucchini bikini buster, a zucchini cupcake loaded with pecans and topped with cream cheese. To cater to its vegan and gluten-free clients, the Broad Ripple location serves an entirely separate “RAW” menu.

The Comfy Cow tips a hat to its Kentucky roots, using Old Forester Bourbon as the signature ingredient in the shop’s bourbon ball ice cream. Other fan favorites include cake-flavored batter up and dulce de leche.

The business has quickly grown to three locations, one each in the Queen City’s Over-the-Rhine, Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods. Nathan Sivitz, who trained in a macarons master class at Ecole Lenôtre in Paris, counts the rose, lemon, pistachio and salted caramel flavors among the shop’s best-sellers. He also offers classes at the company’s Over-the-Rhine location in case macaron lovers should want to master these difficult but worth it confections.

Macaron Bar’s macarons are gluten-free and $2 a cookie. Patrick Moloughney and Sivitz are also focused on giving back to the community; 5 percent of their total revenue is donated to local nonprofit organizations.

Has Beans Indiana coffee roasters have something to wake you up

Coffea canephora and Coffea arabica thrive in exotic locales. These plants, which yield the coffee beans that fuel many Hoosiers’ mornings, hail from farflung points in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America.

Though coffee-farming locales are far from the Midwest, that’s not to say Hoosiers don’t have a hand in the coffee trade. The beans, which come to the United States in an unroasted form, are being processed by a growing number of Indiana roasters, who are happy to satisfy the evolved palates and demand for artisan beans of today’s coffee consumers.

Selling their roasts and, often, their brews in accompanying cafes, Indiana-based roasters are making their marks in the coffee world by providing what is, truly, an elevated cup o’ joe.

His brother-in-law, Stephen Hall, also fell under the spell of the exotic beans, and at the beginning of 2014 and after plenty of research, they began roasting the type of coffee they wanted to drink, Hall explains.

After brewing a batch of their own beans and tweaking aspects of the roasting process, they sent the fruits of their labor to their friends for honest feedback. As they learned and grew as roasters, they began using software to track and plot temperatures and pressures.

In November they opened Tinker Coffee Co. in Indianapolis.

Since then, it has grown month by month. Johnson and Hall began offering tasting classes shortly after opening; this gave them the opportunity to share their knowledge and passion for coffee with others.

Chris DeMarse worked in the campus coffee shop during his time at Indiana Wesleyan University but saw his job mostly as a social experience; he didn’t really like coffee.

Now, he has seen the way coffee can change the world.

After graduating with a degree in ministry, he joined a local church not far from his university.

In 2012, DeMarse founded Abbey Coffee Co., in Marion. He wanted to roast and sell coffee that told a story; in the coffee shop that accompanies the roaster, he has provided a space for community connections.

Columbus, crownlinkscoffee.com Working out of a trailer he designed and built himself, Wayne King roasts coffee solely to benefit Haiti, which he first visited during a mission trip in the 1980s. Struck by the island nation’s beauty and its poverty, he wanted to help; in 2000, when he wrapped up his career in financial planning, King built coffee roasting into his retirement plans.

And then he made the venture mobile.

“My wife and I are retired,” he says. “She wanted to enjoy travel, so I designed a portable roaster.” The trailer-roaster hybrid allows King to take his business on the road; the roaster spends six months of the year in Columbus and six months in Florida. He primarily sells through his website, where he offers individual bags of coffee and coffee subscriptions.

Benefits to Haiti are twofold: King typically buys Beans to know: his coffee beans from Haitian farmers, supporting EcoCafé Haiti, which the Caribbean agriculture. Bee Coffee Roasters

5510 Lafayette Road and 201 S. Capitol Ave., Suite 110, both in Indianapolis, beecoffeeroasters.com When Andy Gilman met future business partner BJ Davis at an art gallery, Gilman was pursuing a career as an artist, and Davis was in the coffee business. She had managed a coffee network in Indianapolis and competed in the first few barista championships. Davis had recently purchased a coffee shop near Indy’s Eagle Creek Park, and she invited Gilman to work for her as a barista. A few months in and Gilman was obsessed with coffee.

He left for a brief foray at a roaster in Zionsville; he returned to Davis’ enterprises, with some savings, and invested in the roaster her partner had already set up. He and Davis formed Bee Coffee Roasters. The roasting work is done on the northwest side of Indianapolis at the original shop. The beans are sold there and at the company’s downtown coffee shop, where business is booming, thanks in no small part to Beans to know: the nearby convention center.

Espresso Artemis is a consistent favorite and has notes of both citrus and chocolate.

Hopscotch Coffee is the only café and roastery in Bloomington. Since its opening in October, Jane Kupersmith has headed up the roasting.

“Our coffee is really smooth,” she says. “We roast in a way that removes bitterness. We take the time to sort the beans and pay attention to the process.”

Along with making sure the roast is remarkable, Kupersmith focuses much of her energy into finding fairtrade beans. She searches for ethical sources of coffee, including farming groups that prioritize women’s rights and enBeans to vironmental issues. One know: blend from Sumatra is Ethiopia sourced from a women’s Hambella, cooperative farm; profrom a ceeds from sales go back traceable into local education. “It farming has an all-female supply cooperative. chain,” Kupersmith says, something almost unheard of in the industry.

Attached to the roaster is the café, run by Kupersmith’s business partner, Jeff Grant. Although the café is not in downtown Bloomington, it receives a significant portion of pedestrian traffic from the commuters from the surrounding neighborhoods. “The physical space is really beautiful,” Kupersmith says. “One of our benches is reclaimed subfloor from a 110-yearold building.”

Rex Roasting Co.

900 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, rexroasting.com The origins of Rex Roasting Co. date to 1879, when Terre Haute-based baking ingredient manufacturer Clabber Girl Corp., a branch of Hulman & Co., began selling roasted coffee. Sold under the name Arex, Hulman’s coffee was packaged with a crown logo and proclaimed to be “fit for a king.”

The company stopped selling coffee in 1968, until Hulman president, Gary Morris, decided to transform the first floor of the Clabber Girl office space into a coffee roastery, resurrecting its historic brand in 2009. The name was tweaked to Rex Roasting Co.; the crown graces the company’s packaging once again.

Chris Weber roasts for Rex Roasting Co., creating new blends, and has grown the company’s bean profile to include coffee sources from Central America, South America and Africa. The roaster’s walls have large windows where patrons to the adjacent Clabber Girl Bake Shop can watch Weber as he processes the beans. Rex Coffee is sold at a number of restaurants in and around Terre Haute; the beans can be purchased on-site, online or in a number of Indiana Marsh grocery stores and Whole Foods locations.

Local couple quickly immerse themselves in community

ou may have seen the Force organization’s logos around town, on trucks and signs at construction sites. The company, which includes Force Construction and Force Design, is a family business that Clayton Force was happy to return to in his hometown after eight years garnering work experience in Chicago.

He brought his wife, Angela Force, a Chicagoland native from Burbank, Illinois, with him. Working together, they contribute to the quality of life in Columbus through their work lives and their volunteer roles. Clayton attributes this spirit of achievement to the examples of leaders who came before him.

“We have an obligation to learn from the philanthropy, the giving and the volunteerism that came from those who helped make this community,” he says.

In their day jobs, Clayton and Angela are forces to be reckoned with. He works as a project engineering manager with the Force companies. He, along with his father, Harold Force, and uncle, David Force, operates their family’s three-generation design

and building firm. The business has roots in Columbus that go back to Clayton’s grandfather, Don Force, who grew up in Martin County on a farm near the banks of the White River. Don moved to Columbus as a teenager, and in 1946, he founded Force Construction. Don’s wife, Vera, joined the company a few years later.

Harold Force is the president of Force Construction Co.; he joined the family business in 1974 after obtaining a degree in civil engineering from Purdue University. David Force is an architect and the president of Force Design.

Also shaping Clayton was his mother, Debbie Force, an audiologist who worked for Columbus Regional Hospital for 25 years. Clayton graduated from Columbus North High School in 1998; he went on to Purdue University, graduating with a degree in civil engineering in 2002.

Different horizons

With every intention of eventually returning to Columbus, Clayton looked for a job outside the family business. He wanted experience in another market that did not compete with his family. After an extensive application process, he got a job with Chicago’s Power Construction; he earned his master’s degree in civil engineering in 2003 from Purdue University.

Angela, who also graduated from Purdue in 2002 with a degree in agriculture and biology, was working for Illinois Toll Roads, a job she found through a government internship that allowed her to use the environmental aspects of her degree in an innovative, policy-driven way.

At Purdue both were active members of Greek life — he in Sigma Chi fraternity and she in Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Despite a

number of friends in common, neither Clayton nor Angela can recall meeting during their college days.

They didn’t meet until Christopher Burke, an acquaintance of both, invited them to a Purdue-Northwestern basketball game. They started dating and were married more than a year later at First United Methodist Church in Columbus.

They spent eight years in Chicago before moving to Columbus in September 2011, when Clayton joined his family’s company. Burke offered Angela a job within his Columbus-based firm, Christopher Burke Engineering LLC. She works as the company’s strategic projects manager.

In their four years in Columbus, they’ve been instrumental in propelling the community forward through their involvement with local initiatives and community growth projects.

And the duo has become a quartet. Their family expanded to include daughter, Julianne, 2, and son, Dawson, who was born in January.

Giving back

The Forces’ passion for Columbus keeps growing as they find more ways to get involved. “What I love about this community,” Angela says, “is that it asks the right questions.”

When they moved to the area, neighbors and co-workers began asking them how they planned to give back to the community. Clayton and Angela dived in; one volunteer experience led to another.

“I was a volleyball coach for St. Bartholomew for two seasons and Columbus North Volleyball Club,” Angela says. She played volleyball for a large Catholic high school in Illinois. She is a current board member of two youth-driven organizations: Foundation For Youth and Bartholomew Consolidated School Foundation. Angela also helped with the parks department’s 2012 fundraising efforts, which benefited the People Trail expansion project.

She credits others with sparking her desire to contribute. “Clayton’s parents are both very active in this community,” she says. “When you spend a lot of personal time with a family committed to this community, I think that energy is contagious.”

Clayton does not take that energy for granted. Like Angela, he was an athletic child, playing soccer for Columbus North High School and Columbus Express. In the off-season, he played indoor soccer in Columbus and around Indianapolis; shortly after they moved back to Columbus, he played soccer on the Parks and Recreation men’s league.

Clayton is involved in a number of service and educational initiatives. He serves as the vice chairman of the City Utility Board. “My grandfather on my mother’s side, Bud, worked for the utility services here in town,” he says. “Some of my fellow board members worked for Bud.” Additionally, he has worked with IUPUC’s engineering program to create a professional mentors program and links between local resources in engineering with students who will one day work in the field. He and other professionals spend time in the classroom, with the objective being to create local support of the IUPUC engineering program and to expose students to the wide variety of engineering opportunities in Columbus.

He helped organize site visits with the students to the Cummins Technical Center, Cummins Midrange Engine Plant, the City Wastewater Treatment Plant, a Force Construction job site and CyberMetrix. He is also working with Ivy Tech administrators in his capacity as chairman of the school’s pre-engineering advisory committee.

“We have found a lot of opportunity to get young people engaged,” Clayton says, which he sees as an important investment in our future.

Clayton and Angela are looking forward to what Columbus will grow to be. They share similar visions and are encouraged by the community’s current trajectory. “I hope the community is even stronger than it is today,” he says. “There has been a lot of growth, and a lot of diverse communities are coming to Columbus.”

There is potential in diversity, he says, particularly in the younger generation, for innovation and for carrying on the Columbus legacy of greatness.

“This community is great because of the people who came before us,” he says. “It is going to require that from future generations. In order for Columbus to continue to be a great place to live, we need to learn from those who made it a great place to live.”

Mugdha Naik came to Columbus in 2007. With a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Nevada, she relocated to Indiana for a job at Cummins Inc. Shortly after, she met her now-husband, Samrat Patil, who was also working in the Cummins emissions solutions department.

“When she first moved to Columbus, she was sharing an apartment with my friend at work. I still remember it clearly,” Patil recalls. “We all were going for a movie up in Indy and I was driving.

She was sitting in the back seat; I was checking the mirror all the time. I found her very beautiful and very interesting.”

Both originally from India, the couple grew together through cultural and professional familiarity. They were born and raised in the same state

During their visits, Patil says, both his parents and Naik’s have agreed that Columbus is a great place to live, although not, perhaps, for them.

If the less dense population is a bit odd for Naik, it has its benefits; she and Patil enjoy the easier work commute. “There’s more quality time to spend at home,” she says.

They have a relatively new reason to spend time in their Tipton Lakes home: their daughter, Kaeya Patil, who was born June 20, 2014.

Artistic bent

The mind of an engineer operates in a linear fashion. Despite efforts to incorporate art into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, the “A” doesn’t always fit in.

Mugdha Naik taps into her creative side to give back to the community in India; their hometowns, Pune and Kolhapur, are separated by only three hours.

Naik and Patil were married in 2010. They have made their home in Columbus, enjoying the employment opportunities offered by Cummins.

“I think working for Cummins is one of the best career decisions,” Naik says. “People from diverse backgrounds are working here. It’s a small town, yes, but there are so many things to do.”

Room to stretch out

Having come from such a densely populated country, Naik sometimes finds the calm atmosphere of Columbus lonely. In India, the streets are constantly filled with people. “Even if it’s 12 in the night, you see people,” she says.

She admits that during her annual pilgrimage home, India is always more crowded than she remembers.

Naik has tried convincing her parents to come live in the States, but she says they don’t want to leave their friends and familiarity. “They like to come visit, but they don’t like to stay long,” she says.

But Naik bucks the tradition; in her hours away from Cummins, she has embraced painting as a mode of expression. It’s a hobby she’s enjoyed since she was a little girl in India. “In school all of my report cards said, ‘She draws really well,’” Naik says. She laughs because she’s unsure about her grades in other subjects.

Her canvases are filled with striking images.

One, based on a photo from a magazine, features a woman’s upper face; her lower face is concealed by a scarf. Done in green tones, the woman’s fixed gaze transcends the canvas.

Naik’s work bears Impressionist and Expressionist influences. A depiction of a dancer calls to mind the more dreamy works of Marc Chagall.

A pair of horses’ heads, rendered in thick brush strokes, invites comparisons to Vincent van Gogh.

Patil says he is jealous of his wife’s talent. She and other artists are truly blessed people, he says.

“They can use time and create something that is so beautiful and expressive,” he says.

“She is a different entity when she is painting, a purely happy human.”

A talent for giving

About four months into her pregnancy, Naik began to feel as if something were missing. She wanted to celebrate her daughter’s birth in a meaningful way.

“When I was pregnant, I was thinking about all these other kids,” she says. “We are such fortunate parents to have what we have and to be able to take care of our child. Not all kids have that.”

With that in mind, she tapped into her artistic talents to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children. She began to paint, hoping to complete 20 paintings before giving birth to Kaeya.

“She gets focused and energized when she finds a goal or cause to go after,” Patil says. “I am so proud of her.”

Naik posted each painting to her Facebook page, which generated a surprising amount of positive feedback.

“My inspiration comes from pictures I have taken or something that I’ve seen on television,” she says. “We have traveled to a lot of different countries, like Japan, Peru and China, so some of that comes from my travel as well.”

Though the painting became challenging in her last month of pregnancy, she persevered. “Since I was

expecting, I couldn’t use the oil paints because it was harmful to inhale,” Naik says. “I was using acrylics so I had to work fast because they dry up.”

Friends and family encouraged her to put together an exhibit of the 18 paintings. It was held in July 2014 in the MainSource Bank Community Room, not long after Kaeya was born. Most paintings left with new owners the evening of the exhibit; Mukta Gokhale became the proud owner of one.

“I was introduced to Mugdha through a common friend at a get-together,” Gokhale says. “I saw her paintings on her Facebook page and was impressed. I bought a beautiful piece named “Lost in Rhythm” during her fundraiser. I was the first one to reach and grab it. I liked her choice of colors and blending with the mood of the painting.”

Naik raised more than $700 for Riley. She plans to continue her hobby, appreciating how it motivates her mind and body. She typically makes a large donation to a nonprofit every year and feels that painting might be the avenue to help her do so.

“Maybe the future holds something for me,” Naik says. “I don’t have any plans yet, but I definitely want to continue because I enjoy it so much.”

NoBoundaries Columbus’ museum without walls gets a facelift Story by Rachael Huddy

Columbus does not have a brick-and-mortar art museum.

Perhaps it’s a little odd that a city with a long and storied history of celebrating the arts does not have a dedicated museum space, but don’t be mistaken. Columbus does have an art museum. It is, like the city itself, a little unconventional.

Often called “the museum without walls,” the Columbus Museum of Art and Design is a museum that works with an open concept.

It is, in effect, homeless. But for the leaders of CMAD, the lack of a dedicated gallery space has opened doors, and with careful coordination and the efforts of a small board, the organization now curates shows at points around the city. Art patrons can catch CMAD exhibits in the Hotel Indigo, WellConnect and The Commons.

“We are artistic nomads; we can do whatever, be whatever,” says CMAD board President Brooke Hawkins. “We are nimble. And

that’s what we love about the organization.”

And now, after a sizable rebranding process, it is moving into a new phase. “I really hope this can move us beyond the status quo,” says Heather Dunn, CMAD’s vice president of operations.

The History

Roll back the calendar to 1974, when Xenia Miller, working with Carl Weinhardt Jr., the director of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, opened an IMA satellite gallery. As part of the agreement with the IMA, portions of the Indianapolis museum’s collection would be displayed in Columbus, if a suitable space could be found.

“The original goal is that we would have art from the IMA that would be shared with the residents of the Columbus community,” says Beth Stroh, CMAD’s longest-serving board member.

Miller suggested the second floor of the Columbus Area Visitors Center; the gallery was christened the Indianapolis Museum of Art-Columbus. The first curated show was a retrospective of work by Eliel Saarinen and Eero Saarinen;

for the show, the gallery was filled with sketches, models and designs by the architects.

In November 1991, the IMA-Columbus opened the Columbus Museum Shop, a gift shop in The Commons. It closed in 1998.

In 1993 as the Visitors Center grew, the gallery lost its home for the first time. The museum found another second-floor home, this time in The Commons. In 2004, the group changed its name to Columbus Museum of Art and Design and veered from the IMA partnership in an effort to expand its offerings; this strategy, for example, brought in a traveling Smithsonian exhibit. The name change was also intended to expand the organization’s scope to include design.

“We have a tremendous history in design,” Stroh says. “Not just in architecture, but in other industry.”

In 2007 most of The Commons was torn down for renovations, and the museum became homeless again, this time for a longer period.

The organization went into a less active period, with programming occurring mostly at the Hotel Indigo. “When they demolished The Commons, we felt kind of lost,” Hawkins says.

“We didn’t know which direction we wanted to take; we were sad because we were homeless.”

There was a positive side, Stroh says. “I think that sometimes place is very important, but it’s also limiting,” she says. “What we could show, in that gallery, was limited by the space.”

CMAD volunteers rallied and found new spaces for gallery shows scattered around the downtown area. When The Commons reopened in 2011, CMAD took over the glass cases on the second floor.

In the past five years, the group has sponsored various art undertakings around the city, including Andy J. Miller’s mural at kidscommons; “Yu Columbus,” with Mark Cooper, an installation at Indiana University College of Art

The Rebranding Despite its recent achievements in the arts community, the organization was in need of a facelift. “CMAD needed to rebrand to be recognized and seen by the community,” Dunn says. “Many or most community members are

not aware of our organization despite its longstanding history in the community.”

The board members began working to reshape and solidify the group; they asked questions to identify goals. “Who are we?”

“What do we want to do?” “Who do we want to be?” “What do we want to look like?”

Some of the changes were superficial; a component of the process was designing a new logo. Hawkins looked for a graphic that conveyed the message “that CMAD is flexible, approachable, modern, and that art is for everyone,” she says.

as the organization grows. The rebranding included increased outreach efforts. In addition to curating at the three spaces that CMAD occupies, the organization has vowed to be involved in one large project per year. The nine board members also serve as volunteers, organizing, executing and overseeing the gallery openings and other events.

Most recently CMAD received a grant from the Heritage Fund to create the Community Curatorial Mentorship Program, founded with the objective of engaging other community agencies in conversations and activities in the arts.

“The idea of the project is to work with community organizations that are not inherently art-related. CMAD welcomes them in

and takes them through a series of workshops,” Hawkins says. “We teach them about art and how to curate their own shows based on the interests of their organizations.”

To get the presentations going, CMAD recruited Paula Katz, the director of the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. The curatorial program has brought in representatives from Arc of Bartholomew County, Columbus Signature Academy, Mill Race Center and Pride Alliance.

“We are on the cusp of a really exciting time in Columbus right now,” Hawkins says. “I feel like things are changing rapidly, especially with the arts.”

In August, CMAD launched its rebranding.

Mid-month, board members staffed a booth at the Downtown Farmers Market, passing out tote bags bearing the new logo. The following weekend, the group held an Art Walk that featured displays at Hotel Indigo, The Commons and WellConnect. For Indianapolis-based photographer Hadley Fruits, who showed his work at Hotel Indigo during the Art Walk, CMAD’s rebranding shows a recommitment on its part.

“To remain healthy and thriving, every organization should thoroughly re-evaluate the course and scope of their mission to best serve its constituency, revitalize its relationships and provide strong leadership through collaboration,” Fruits said.

“I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute to their vision in this small exhibition.”

The rebranding, Stroh says, is a chance for CMAD leaders and the community to reflect on the role art plays in our daily lives and just how far a museum without walls can take art.

“The important step we’re taking now is the reflection that art is around us everywhere,” Stroh says. “If we look at the presentation of art and design in a variety of locations, we can recognize that it is part of our daily life.”

Thyroid conditions present health challenges

C

olumbus resident Mary Daley recently learned a valuable health lesson she hopes will help others. She noticed small, pebble-size nodules on either side of the front of her lower neck.

For several years, she put off going to the doctor, thinking the bumps would just go away. They didn’t.

In early 2015, when her voice started failing her, the 74-year-old paid a visit to her family doctor only to discover she had multiple nodules on her thyroid.

She was referred to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who scheduled her surgery, and soon found out the imaging tests hadn’t quite shown everything.

“During surgery, the doctor found two hollow nodules that he said would have developed into cancer,” she says. “But, on the other side, there was a golf ball size knot that was wrapped around my vocal cords that didn’t show up on the MRI.” After undergoing nearly three hours of surgery to remove the nodules and her thyroid, Daley was able to go home the same day.

She now takes medication, which requires regular

blood testing, to supplement the loss of the gland; she will take the medication for the rest of her life. But with a history of cancer in her family, she says she is just grateful the doctor was able to remove the nodules before they’d developed further.

Daley’s experience is one shared by millions of Americans each year.

“Many patients pick up on their own thyroid nodules by simply resting their hand on their neck,” says Dr. Allison Royer who, along with her husband, Dr. Mark Royer, has a joint practice affiliated with Columbus Regional Health. The Royers treat many common issues affecting the ears, nose and throat. “(Patients) think, ‘Oh, it feels firm,’ or ‘Oh, there’s a bump I didn’t used to have,’” Allison Royer says.

But palpable lumps are just one possible sign.

According to the American Thyroid Association, about 12 percent of people will develop some form of thyroid disease in their lifetime. Nearly 20 million Americans have thyroid disease, and more than half of those are unaware they have it.

Hyper or hypo?

The most common thyroid conditions are hyperthyroidism, also known as an overactive thyroid, and hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, says Dr. Anthony Sanders, a physician at Southern Indiana ENT in Columbus.

The thyroid is a shield-shaped gland with two sides that are connected by the isthmus, which resembles a bridge. Located in the neck, the thyroid produces hormones that help regulate the body’s metabolism.

One of the most common thyroid disorders Sanders sees in his practice is hypothyroidism. Individuals with an underactive thyroid may experience a variety of symptoms, from a lack of energy and cold intolerance to weight gain despite not changing their diet, he says.

“The most common cause is thyroiditis, which is an inflammatory disorder where the thyroid cells are overtaken by inflammatory cells,” he explains. “It tends to run in families and is a cousin to rheumatoid arthritis.”

Though it may sound intimidating, hypothyroidism is one of the easier thyroid disorders to treat. The treatment is usually thyroid hormone replacement to get the gland back in working order and hormone levels balanced. Once balance is restored, symptoms will subside, he says. Hypothyroidism is most commonly diagnosed in 52

women, but men aren’t exempt, he cautions.

Peak incidents of this thyroid disorder generally manifest from age 30 to 35.

Hyperthyroidism, which is less common, has symptoms that are the opposite of hypothyroidism. When the gland is working overtime, one may lose weight, experience tremors or anxiety, and feel his heart race or flutter.

“People who have overactive thyroid usually require some investigation and testing to decide the nature of the problem,” Sanders says.

The most frequent cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease, which causes the thyroid to work overtime and, as a result, enlarge. The antibodies responsible for stimulating the thyroid trigger the production of an overabundance of hormones, causing the body to lose its ability to self-regulate.

Medication is commonly used to block thyroid hormone production. But when that doesn’t work, patients may be given a onetime dose of liquid radioactive iodine to kill thyroid cells. Surgery may also be performed to remove the thyroid in part or entirely.

Beware of nodules

In some cases it’s possible that a solitary nodule can instigate the development of an overactive thyroid. Nodules can cause the thyroid to initially work too much before hindering its ability to function at all. Depending on the size and number of nodules, a person may develop a chronic cough, hoarse voice or even cough up blood.

Multiple nodules also contribute to the formation of a goiter, or enlarged thyroid, Sanders says. “The multiple thyroid nodules get bigger and bigger, and no one knows

why,” he says. “Certain things can make your thyroid enlarged, like iodine deficiency.”

Generally, goiters can require medical intervention when they cause cosmetic or compressive symptoms. If a goiter gets too large, it can press on the windpipe or esophagus, making it difficult to breathe or swallow.

It’s important to have a goiter removed as soon as possible, he says, both to lessen the risk of it enlarging further or migrating downward.

“They can grow into the chest, causing what’s called a substernal goiter,” Sanders says.

“We try to get those before they get too far south where we have to split the chest to remove them, which is like having heart surgery.”

Advances in surgery

For Allison and Mark Royer, the majority of their practice is performed in the operating room.

“Where we come into play is when a patient develops a nodule in the thyroid, because the concern is it is cancer,” says Mark Royer. “When a nodule is detected, we work to figure out what’s going on, whether we need to watch it or remove half of the thyroid or the whole gland.”

Statistically speaking, the ATA says nodules are frequently detected; however, fewer than one in 10 is malignant. However, when malignancy is detected, the most common and treatable forms of thyroid cancer include papillary and follicular, Allison Royer says. Both forms generally offer a good prognosis with treatment.

Individuals who have a nodule or enlarged thyroid that isn’t palpable will often complain that it feels like something is stuck

in their throat, Mark Royer says. In more concerning cases, the individual may even experience significant changes to his voice.

“There’s a nerve that moves the vocal cords that you have to identify and monitor during the course of a thyroid procedure that runs right next to the thyroid gland,” Mark Royer says. “If there’s a cancer or a large nodule, it can push on that nerve. It’s like how if you fall asleep on your arm and you can’t feel your fingers as well, the same thing can happen with your voice.”

The Royers, who often operate together, use a cutting-edge nerve integrity monitor, or NIM, when performing thyroid surgeries.

The NIM system involves a special breathing tube that has electrodes on it, Mark Royer says. “It goes right next to the vocal cords, so if the vocal cords twitch or move at all, it monitors that on a computer screen that we can monitor throughout the procedure.”

Using the NIM not only adds an additional safety layer for the patient during the procedure, but it also allows for smaller incisions, which can expedite recovery, he says.

In days past, patients undergoing thyroid surgery could expect to spend days in the hospital, have a large incision and long recovery time, Allison Royer says. Fortunately, medicine and technology have come a long way.

Daley says she was surprised by how quickly she was up and moving around after surgery. But above all, she was impressed by the incision. “I figured I’d have a bad scar,” she says. “But I hardly have one, and people can’t believe it.”

Technological advances, such as more sensitive imaging tests and two-phase needle biopsies that allow for genetic testing, have helped make the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders much easier, Sanders says.

For those patients who may undergo surgical treatment for a thyroid condition, Allison Royer offers some advice.

“Ask questions,” she says. “Is the surgeon doing enough of a volume of thyroids and frequently enough that he is comfortable with it and the management of the different thyroid issues?”

Daley echoes the doctor’s sentiment and takes it a step further.

“If someone feels a knot anywhere on their body, I would advise them to go to the doctor right way,” she says. “And if you aren’t comfortable or don’t like the answers you are given, get a second opinion. You have to be your own advocate.”

Hospital gift shop exists to serve others, even beyond its walls

T

he Columbus Regional Hospital Gift Shop stands out with its cheery front display case and dark wood accents.

Enter, and you’ll find shelves full of sundries and whimsy.

“The gift shop has such a draw because it’s a very happy environment. It’s a place to connect with people on positive and happy terms,” says Kelsey DeClue, CRH public relations specialist.

Run by the CRH Auxiliary and staffed primarily by volunteers, the gift shop sells bags, scarves, jewelry and candles; inspirational and seasonal items; and gifts for newborn babies. “We actually have customers who just come here to shop,” says auxiliary President Beverly Bryant-Ulrey.

The shop also stocks candy, magazines and toys that help pass the time, says Paula Eller, CRH director of volunteer services. Shoppers will find

more than ephemera, though, as the shop carries medically driven items requested by hospital staff, such as a cream that’s very popular for cancer patients and compression socks that are helpful for diabetic patients.

Beyond brightening a patient’s day, gift shop sales do a wealth of good in the community. Its profits go directly to the auxiliary, which then implements projects within the hospital and benefits programs outside the hospital. Community beneficiaries include the Granny Connection, Turning Point Domestic Violence Services and the Columbus Bike Co-Op. “The shop exists not just to pull in funds for ourselves, like a traditional retail shop, but to give back in some way to the patients however we can, which really goes in line with the philosophy at CRH in general,” DeClue says.

Hospital history In the days before there was a gift shop, CRH volunteers wheeled carts from room to room, selling small essentials and gifts to hospital patients. In 1950, the volunteers formed the CRH Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization, which would work with hospital administration and staff and address patientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; non-medical needs. In 1968, the hospital dedicated space for the gift shop on the main floor.

Since that time, gift shop offerings and the use of the profits from sales have slowly expanded.

are at the front desk, some are at the surgery center and some you never see; they are all over the hospital,” says Bryant-Ulrey. Volunteers form the largest staff group in the hospital.

Volunteer Services, which staffs the gift shop, focuses primarily on contributing to the patient experience. It also operates a silk floral design department for which volunteers create arrangements.

Inside these walls Just inside the hospital’s main entrance is a glass aviary. Finches and canaries flutter inside. The birds are beautiful on any day, but the aviary is by no means the only auxiliary-funded project within the hospital.

The auxiliary heads meet with various hospital departments and work with financial officers to determine what the needs are and which projects to tackle. “In September, we do a contribution back to the hospital, earmarking that money for various projects,” says Eller.

The beautiful outdoor fountain just outside the cafeteria, and the waiting area, called the Oasis Room, were both funded by the auxiliary. Since 1951, it has contributed more than $2 million toward proj-

ects within the hospital.

Twice a year, the auxiliary contributes funds to a nonprofit organization in the community; recipients include Turning Point Domestic Violence Services, Just Friends Adult Day Services, Volunteers in Medicine and Love Chapel. It also donates gift shop items to be auctioned or raffled for fundraising events to organizations such as the Columbus Area Arts Council, kidscommons, the Columbus Bike Co-Op, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana and the CRH Foundation.

“We try to keep our name out there to let people know what we actually do here,” says Pat Legger, gift shop manager.

Talking shop By selling merchandise from other nonprofit organizations in the community, the gift shop benefits goals that extend deeper into the community. The shop carries glazed pecans produced by the Granny Connection, a Columbus-based organization that benefits grandmothers caring for orphans who have lost parents to AIDS in Africa, as well as bracelets by residents at Miller’s Merry Manor, a residential rehab center in Hope. In turn, Merry Manor residents donated their profits to other nonprofits.

Shop leaders also re-evaluate price points to accommodate customers of all incomes.

“We are really trying to cater to both ends,” Eller says, “because we obviously have people coming in who are on a fixed income.”

The staff can make an immediate impact in that regard. Bryant-Ulrey was working one day when an older man came into the shop.

He had a neighbor who was in the hospital, and she had done a lot for him. “He wanted to get her something, but he didn’t have much money,” Bryant-Ulrey said. He had $5.

“I think we can fix you up,” she said. She helped him fill a bud vase with a carnation, fern and ribbons. “He went out of here prouder than anything,” Bryant-Ulrey says. “And he had something really nice to take to her.”

Volunteers, she says, take great pride in knowing that their work makes a difference.

Serving patients, their families and friends who may be dealing with the stress of illness or injury, or who may be celebrating the birth of a new baby, is work that volunteers take very seriously.

“Service is our number one thing, but we also have profit we can share,” Bryant-Ulrey says. “It all goes back to the hospital one way or the other.”

Bright Ideas Lighting adds drama and style to every room in your home

When you think of the elements that play into the total package that is your home, you may think of walls and flooring, of paint colors and fixtures. But there’s one nuanced element you might be overlooking: light.

“A certain amount of light is required to move through any given space,” explains Jan Banister, who has worked as an independent interior designer for 35 years, with an emphasis on residential and light commercial remodeling and construction. “Three distinct layers of light apply to every space, whether residential or commercial.”

Light and the features that direct it can transform your home, adding depth to your decor. Understanding the fundamentals of light, including use of indirect/direct lighting and layering can help you choose the right fixtures and amount of light to properly illuminate your home.

The first layer is ambient lighting, or what Banister refers to as general circulation light. Ambient lighting is the non-specific lighting available in a room.

This could be the light coming in from the windows or the light that comes in when you flip on the overhead lights.

The second layer, task lighting, is lighting that is put in place to localize illuminance (e.g., a desk lamp). You’ll typically find task lighting in areas such as bathrooms, home offices and kitchens, all rooms in which one may need lighting for specific tasks, but the entire room does not need to be at that same level of light.

Accent lighting is the third layer to consider; it highlights certain objects or areas of the home, such as artworks or a beautiful fireplace. It’s best for creating visual interest and shaping the space.

Radiant Rooms One easy way to create visual interest in any room is to project patterns onto the ceiling by up-lighting through indoor plants and trees, Banister says. This can provide a soft and interesting way to introduce the ceiling plane of any room. Some ceilings can be intricately designed. For example, a tray ceiling with multiple levels can feature perimeter, indirect lighting shining through each level.

Just as different rooms have different purposes, they need specific lighting. For the dining room, a central chandelier is still a popular focal point, Banister says. However, modern lighting design incorporates recessed canned lighting and wall sconces into the dining room scene. Canned lights, sconces and candles on the table allow for more flexibility with your dining room furniture arrangement. Tall portable lamps gracing each end of a buffet table are another way to create a soft atmosphere of light.

To get cooking in the kitchen, try decorative accent lighting to illuminate cabinetry and pot rack combinations over islands. Rail systems for track lighting and pendant lights with every imaginable type of glass or metal globe add contemporary flair to the modern kitchen, Banister says.

Under-cabinet light is increasing in popularity to enhance task lighting. Lighting placed inside cabinets and pantries can be automated so that lights come on as you open a cabinet door.

The home office generally requires direct task light. It is important to generate an even light throughout the room, Banister says. Your computer screen should not be glowing brightly in a darkened room; task lighting should not create glare on your computer screen. Controllable under cabinet lighting over a desk area provides efficient task lighting.

At the bathroom sinks, sconces provide the best and most even light. Other options for the bathroom include ambient and task lighting, with dimming controls as needed, Banister says. Some shower systems incorporate lighting and color therapy. Kohler, for example, has manufactured a new digital interface for its shower system. The system combines water, sound, light and steam under one digital control.

In the bedroom, where the goal is relaxation and slumber, low-level, gentle light emanating from table lamps, wall 60

lamps or rail systems will provide a comfortable glow, Banister says. Pendant lights next to the bed add reading light that can be controlled by each occupant. Window shades, curtains and blinds can limit the amount of natural light entering a room.

Stylish and Contemporary Knowing what kind of lighting you need is only half the job; the next step is figuring

out what kind of light fixture will work in your space. Modern accent lighting has taken a departure from heavy chandeliers and fixtures from the 1980s and 1990s; airier, open designs are the choice for contemporary homes, says Bruce Pollert, owner of Pollert Design Associates in Columbus.

These light designs are available in a variety of materials, such as metal, glass and wood. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The fun design choice Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m seeing with

lighting is the opportunity to add a bit of bling, whether you are hanging crystals from a shade or chandelier to using lamp bases with shiny gold and silver finishes,” Pollert says. “This adds a polished look to your decor and brings attention to your unique fixture.”

Sphere-shaped and round hanging fixtures are trending now, Pollert says, but he notes that he values the way a fixture fits in a room over fashion. “I try to stay away from the trendy (fixtures) and find a fixture that truly fits with my client’s decor, whether contemporary or traditional,” he says. When looking for a hanging fixture, consider the scale of the room; it’s far better, Pollert says, to go big than to realize your new fixture is too small for the space.

Ted Hovermale, sales manager at electrical supply company Kirby Risk, which has a showroom in Lafayette as well as a branch in Columbus, says that many homeowners are opting for light fixtures that highlight what is often hidden: the light bulb. Made of clear glass or caged wire, these fixtures showcase the bulb itself and lend a retro look to a room.

“The unique look of the Edison bulb’s decorative filament shines through the open fixtures,” he says.

The pendulum also swings in a vastly more modern direction: Light emitting diode (LED) fixtures are a recent breakthrough in the lighting industry. “LED has come a long way in the last years and is a game changer,” Hovermale says. “LEDs have no sockets for bulbs; the LEDs are built into the fixture, allowing light to be incorporated into just about anything in the home from cabinetry to flooring and walls.”

This extremely efficient lighting offers 25,000 or 55,000 hours of usage, much more than the regular incandescent bulbs.

“For example,” Hovermale explains, “if you are using a 25,000-hour rated bulb in a fixture that averages about three hours of use every day, that fixture will shine for 22 or 23 years.” Because these lights last for so long, homeowners will often use LED lights for high ceiling fixtures and over stairways and typically hard-to-reach areas. Better still, prices for this in-demand lighting are going down, he says.

“Many people overlook lighting as a design feature in their homes,” says Hovermale. “But when it is noticed, it plays a huge role in the overall design of the home.”

Chris Price’s condo raises the bar on downtown living

Chris Price traveled nearly 4,000 miles to find his home.

The Brit’s life in Columbus began in 1994, with an eighthour trip on flight DL 37 from London to Cincinnati. He was a Cummins project leader on a one-year assignment. When the project was extended, Price was happy to stay indefinitely.

The size of Columbus suits him. “I like to visit big cities, but I like to leave them, too,” he says.

A frequent traveler who loves to entertain at home, he found the exact mix of his lifestyles in his Jackson Place three-story condominium. Complete with three bedrooms, two full and two half bathrooms, and a rooftop terrace offering views of Columbus’ downtown skyline, the condo is a nifty mix of urban and urbane.

Looking for home

Originally from England, Price was born in Stone, Staffordshire, an old town 65 miles south of Liverpool. Most of his life was spent in Daventry, home to England’s largest Cummins Inc. plant, where he was hired to work in 1981.

When Cummins moved him to Columbus, he leased his home in England, rented an apartment on Sycamore Street and bought a clunker car; reflecting his assignment, his setup was temporary. When his stay was extended, he bought a three-bedroom ranch home on Columbus’ northeast side. In 2009, after his neighborhood flooded, he found himself kayaking from his front door to drier land. That, he

notes, was the last straw, and he put the home up for sale.

It sold in two days, forcing him to move into a vacant flat in the Jackson Street development, next door to his 3,000-squarefoot unfinished condo. It was his new start, so he stayed close to witness daily progress of the seven-month project.

Of Price’s 34 years at Cummins, 25 were spent in various information technology jobs. Now he works as a telematics product owner, analyzing and intercepting engine faults and making recommendations to customers based on the alert’s urgency. In short, he often has to respond quickly, and the close proximity of his home to the Cummins Corporate Office Building was a selling point.

“It’s actually faster to walk than to go downstairs to the garage, get in the car, start the car, drive, park in another garage, get out and walk to the office,” he says.

When he bought the condo in early 2010, it was just a shell with studs and some drywall. Originally, it was built as a live-work unit, which typically features business space or storefronts on the lowest level, with living space for the business owner upstairs. Knowing that Price did not have plans to work out of the condo’s lower level, developer Michael Greven, a Columbus resident and managing partner of the Columbus-based development company Casa Verde LLC, planned appropriate revisions. Developers cleared a hole in the floor and built a staircase to join the two spaces.

“They went out of their way to make sure I liked where I lived,” he says.

The condo, which Price says was a custom job from start to finish, is complete, and no renovations remain on his to-do list. He has acquired his perfect home, and Columbus provides the perfect setting.

It’s easy being green Part of Price’s decision to buy in to the Jackson Place condos lay in the highly efficient, environmentally friendly setup of each of the units. In Spanish, Casa Verde means “green house,” and the company works to live up to its name. For the Jackson Place project, Casa Verde developers used ecofriendly building materials with consideration for all of the details. The developers used interior paint with low volatile organic compounds, for example. Solar panels power the building’s common areas.

The building, Greven says, adheres to U.S. Green Building Council specifications and is certified under its Green Building Rating System. Those specifications mean occupants use less water and energy and spend less to operate the homes.

The water faucets are low-flow, which means the occupants use 30 percent less water without sacrificing water pressure, and there isn’t one low-efficiency incandescent light bulb in sight. Jackson Place’s landscaping is organically grown, and smoking is not permitted on the property.

The double-glazed, high-efficiency windows are equipped with top-down, bottom-up window treatments offering the ultimate in privacy and light control. The extra insulation reduces heat transfer in the winter. During the build-out, which began in January and ran into July, Price says, the temperature did not drop below 50 degrees in the unit.

Inside, the green design and adaptations are seamless.

Outside, the condo’s testament to environmentally friendly living is captured in the 40-by-50-foot community mural covering the south wall of the building. Made of recycled materials, the 83 panels were submitted by community groups to complete the scene titled “Dreaming of a Greener Columbus.”

From the ground up

Price’s condo has four levels, beginning with the sub-ground level shared by the Jackson Place residents. In one corner, his cars, a 2004 Jaguar CJ8 and 2014 Jaguar F-Type and 1971 Triumph Stag, await their driver.

Enter this slim building at street level and you’ll find his 64

entryway, a tiny foyer with an inset carpet, a place for kicking off one’s shoes, and a penguin statue tucked in the corner. The penguins, which appear around the house, began, Price says, with an uncle who was stationed in the Falklands.

Past the foyer is his study, which contains 10 custom-built, vertical bookcases that store approximately 2,000 books. He has read each at least once. On top of the matching desk, made of the same yellow poplar wood, sits a host of computers. It’s his command station.

Down the hallway is Price’s home cinema, complete with movie theater-style chairs and framed Hollywood memorabilia (with a heavy emphasis on “Star Wars”). Just off that is a walk-in closet renovated into a miniature wine cellar chilled to 62 degrees. The wine cellar is cooled by a high-efficiency air conditioning unit installed in the garage for easy access to the floor above it.

His 2,000-gallon Endless Pool also sits on the first floor.

The small pool, which offers an endlessly circulating current, weighs 16,500 pounds. “Most of my electric usage goes to

heating the pool,” he says, but notes that he doesn’t have to heat it often; he jokes that his 7-year-old nephew, Luke, who visits from England, uses the pool more often than he does.

Because of the weight of the pool and the wine cellar’s temperature needs, the garage required custom renovations.

Casa Verde assembled a large steel frame and truss structure to ensure the pool would not cave into the garage.

Tailor-made living

Up the carpeted stairs are rooms where Price spends much of his time. Part relaxation room, part archive of his memorabilia, his second-floor sitting room is decorated with paintings, sculptures, a cricket paddle passed down from his father, and four vintage Apple desktop home computers, all of them operational. He taught himself programming on the first British home computer made by Sinclair. The computers come with individual stories. The oldest in his collection is a 1979 Apple II personal computer, followed by a 1986 Apple Macintosh Plus, NeXT Cube circa 1990, and a red-and-white Apple iMac used in 1998.

In his open living room/kitchen layout, Price’s fondness for computers shows up in three throw pillows embroidered with the keyboard commands “Ctrl,” “Alt” and Del.” A traditional turntable displayed next to his vinyl collection, and 24 Star Trek PEZ dispensers, all in original packaging, are arranged atop the kitchen cabinets.

Recycled-content counters, Energy Star appliances and hand-scooped bamboo floors make Price’s kitchen clean and green. The original kitchen plans featured a taller island that created a barrier between the kitchen and the living space. He insisted the island be trimmed shorter so that a glass countertop could be installed and elevated to an appropriate height. To open the space, he requested ivory paint throughout, and among the 16 shades of recycled bamboo flooring up for consideration, he choose the lightest. The dark leather furniture and

espresso dining table contrast with the natural light that reflects off the lighter woods.

“I learned a lot from living in the unit next door, and I copied a little bit, but there were some things that I wanted different. It was nice to experience that,” he says.

Throughout the home, the ivory walls create a blank canvas to showcase his other love: art. Included in his collection are original watercolors by Canadian artist Annette Goodale and Jan Martin of Indianapolis.

On the condo’s third level, Mardi Gras art prints by New Orleans artist Mousie are found in each room.

On the third floor, Price and guests rest. At the end of the hall, the master bedroom has three lofty windows shining light on two hand-sewn quilts made by his late mother. Her first quilt, sewn with shades of blue and white fabric and thread, was given to Price, the oldest of the four children. A large, pale green and violet floral quilt hangs in his bedroom with custom ceiling spotlights installed to give light to its stitching. He and his sisters wrestled over who would inherit her only competition quilt; Price earned it by being the family member with the tallest ceilings.

Up the last slender staircase is the rooftop. The door opens onto a screened-in area for dining with phenomenal views of Columbus. It’s a spot that’s perfect for stargazing.

“I really love it here,” Price says. “It’s just the right-sized town.”

Road trip, anyone?

There’s no better time than autumn when temps are cooler and school days have thinned the summer’s herd of young vacationers.

Even more appealing is the free spectacle of fall colors as woodlands flip from shades of green to an infinitely warmer spectrum.

Getting There

We’ll visit several spots, including Asheville, Greensboro and Chapel Hill. But before we do, a few words are in order about what might be considered the Tar Heel state’s western gateway, the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The parkway has been called America’s longest linear park. Spanning parts of North Carolina and Virginia, it runs 469 miles through the Blue Ridge mountain chain, a part of the Appalachian range.

In North Carolina, the parkway begins near the Great Smoky Mountains National

Park. Dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1940, this is the most visited national park in the United States. Known especially for its black bears, the park is home to about 10,000 species of plants and animals, with over 100 types of trees.

The North Carolina entrance to the park is at Oconaluftee, two miles from the town of Cherokee. You’ll find the park’s Visitor Center there, which is open year-round, as well as the Mountain Farm Museum, a collection of log buildings assembled from

structures originally found in various locations around the park, depicting a mountain farm in pioneer Appalachia. The museum includes the John Davis Cabin, Enloe Barn, Messer Applehouse, the Baxter/Jenkins Chickenhouse, a meathouse, blacksmith shop and springhouse. Check the National Park Service website (nps.gov) for more information.

The park, of course, is a destination in its own right. But drive an hour more and you’ll find yourself in one of North Carolina’s most dynamic cities.

Asheville

Asheville is a high altitude town, founded in 1784. Located at the confluence of the Swannanoa and French Broad rivers, this region was once part of the Cherokee Nation.

The first European explorers arrived in the mid-16th century.

Asheville’s mountainous location provides a cooler climate than most other North Carolina communities. But it’s not just its weather that makes Asheville cool.

This city of 83,000 has been nationally ranked by publications ranging from Rolling Stone to AARP Magazine for its art scene, natural beauty and overall quality of life. It boasts an extraordinary array of Art Deco architecture.

Asheville is home to the world-renowned Biltmore Estate and Village, but the YMI Cultural Center, one of the nation’s oldest black cultural centers, is also located here, as is Black Mountain College, famous for its role in the development of American modern art and performance.

Asheville is a hotbed of experimental theater. Where else are you going to find an annual Americana Burlesque and Sideshow Festival? And its craft beer scene is one of the oldest in the nation.

Where to stay

The problem isn’t finding a memorable place to stay in Ashville, it’s choosing what best suits you.

The Albemarle Inn (albemarleinn.com; 86 Edgemont Road; 828-255-0027), for example, is a Greek Revival mansion in the historic Grove Park residential district that dates to 1909. Here you’ll find polished oak paneling and four-poster beds, complete with a veranda and garden for relaxing. It’s a 10-minute drive from downtown.

But if downtown is where you’d rather be, try the Haywood Park Hotel (haywoodpark.com; One Battery Park Ave.; 828-252-2522). The Haywood Park is a dogfriendly, Historic Hotels of America property that was once a department store. It’s in the heart of downtown, within easy walking distance of such destinations as the St. Lawrence Basilica, Asheville Art Museum and Grove Arcade.

2949). Adjacent to the Biltmore Estate, the Grand Bohemian is a delirious take on an Old World hunting lodge, complete with a massive stone fireplace and a menagerie of stuffed animals in the lobby. There’s even an art gallery. The Red Stag Bar & Lounge seems like the kind of place where Ian Fleming’s Goldfinger might have enjoyed a cocktail.

But because you’re in Asheville, why not go all the way? The Biltmore Estate (Biltmore. com) includes a hotel and an inn, not to mention 8,000 acres of Blue Ridge scenery for hiking, picnicking, biking, horseback riding and even fishing. The estate also includes 10 places to eat at a variety of price points, plenty of shopping opportunities and a winery.

Then, of course, you can tour the mansion.

George Vanderbilt, heir to an industrial fortune, finished the place in 1895. It has four acres of floor space, 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces.

Dining

North Carolina takes pride in its food ways, and Asheville is replete with great places to eat and drink. Where to begin?

alumna Katie Button (named one of Food and Wine magazine’s Best New Chefs for 2015) brings the Spanish idea of tapas to Appalachia. Try the fried eggplant drizzled in wild mountain honey and garnished with rosemary, or how about spicy chorizo wrapped in potato chips, or clams steamed in cider with chorizo.

You’ll want to sample breakfast or lunch at Biscuit Head (biscuitheads.com; 733 Haywood Road; 828-333-5145). This family-run, environmentally friendly take on Southern home cooking is the place to find Sriracha maple sausage, fried catfish or country ham. But there are plenty of veggie and gluten-free options, too.

And then there’s Rhubarb (rhubarbasheville.com; 7 SW Pack Square; 828785-1503), chef John Fleer’s creative approach to American comfort food. Full plates include wood-roasted whole sunburst trout, with a summer squash ragout, miso glazed torpedo onion, yogurt and preserved lemon remoulade; seared IPA brined cauliflower steak; and rhubarb glazed duck confit.

Out and about

Food tours provide another way to enjoy Asheville. Asheville Food Tours (ashevillefoodtours.com; leaving from 1 Page Ave.; 828-243-7401) features guided walking tours to six or seven hand-picked restaurants and food shops, where you’ll sample their offerings and meet local chefs and purveyors.

Tours take three to five hours.

Or explore the North Carolina Arboretum (ncarboretum.org; 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way; 828-665-2492). Here are 65 acres of cultivated gardens, 10 miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as indoor and outdoor exhibits.

Finally, be sure to visit the Southern Highland Craft Guild Folk Art Center (southernhighlandguild.org; Mile Post 382, Blue Ridge Parkway; 828-298-7928) to see the finest in traditional and contemporary Southern Appalachian crafts. The center includes three galleries, a bookstore and a craft shop.

Downtown Greensboro

Travel

Greensboro Interstate 40 takes you north and east, out of the mountains and into the Piedmont area of North Carolina. Piedmont is another way of saying foothill. In North Carolina, the Piedmont also serves as home to a sprawling constellation of metro areas.

Greensboro is in what is called the Piedmont Triad, a cluster of cities, including Winston-Salem and High Point. Greensboro’s population is just under 280,000, but factor in the entire Triad, and you have a combined total of over 1.5 million people.

Greensboro was settled by Quakers in about 1750. It was eventually named in honor of Nathaniel Greene, the Revolutionary War general who commanded American forces at the battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781.

Greensboro was a textile hub; mills established by the Cone brothers were the largest producers of denim in the world.

Greensboro also holds a special place in America’s civil rights history. In 1960, four black students staged a sit-in at the downtown Woolworth’s lunch counter, sparking protests that would soon spread across the South. This site has been preserved, and the International Civil Rights Center & Museum (sitinmovement.org; 134 S. Elm St.; 336-274-9199) is now one of Greensboro’s most compelling attractions.

Where to stay

A bed-and-breakfast makes a great base from which to explore Greensboro and the surrounding area. The Troy-Bumpas Inn (troy-bumpasinn.com; 114 S. Mendenhall St.;

336-370-1660) is a stately 1847 mansion, located in the College Hill Historic District and just a mile from downtown. It has four guest rooms, all with private baths and free Wi-Fi. The Dailey Renewal Retreat (dailey renewalretreat.net; 808 Northridge St.; 336451-7742) offers five bedrooms in a Victorian home, with a wraparound porch in Lindley Park, a tree-lined, residential neighborhood, not far from the Greensboro campus of the University of North Carolina.

But if you’re in the mood for something posh, try the Proximity Hotel (proximityhotel. com; 704 Green Valley Road; 336-379-8200).

This hotel, on the outskirts of town, features a terrific restaurant and fitness studio, and is not far from the Greenway, a jogging and biking trail.

Dining

A local fine-dining favorite, Undercurrent Restaurant (undercurrentrestaurant.com; 327 Battleground Ave.; 336-370-1266) invests new American cuisine with French elegance. The menu is regularly updated, but the fried oyster salad with organic greens, basil dressing, pickled peach, tasso ham and red onion remoulade, provides an excellent example of what’s available.

Table 16 (table16restaurant.com; 600 S. Elm St.; 336-279-8525), in the heart of downtown’s Arts District, offers an array of global flavors concocted from locally sourced ingredients. A Sakura Duroc pork chop includes a corn pudding muffin, rainbow chard and red eye bordelaise; the catfish is served with coconut basmati rice, black bean and mango salsa.

And if you want your Southern cuisine served straight up, check out Lucky 32

(lucky32.com; 1421 Westover Terrace; 336370-0707). One of two restaurants (the other’s in Cary), Lucky 32 prides itself on farm-to-fork, sustainably raised ingredients.

The menu features a virtual encyclopedia of Southern classics, nicely tweaked for contemporary palates. Grilled quail with spicy blueberry barbecue sauce is just one example.

Out and about

The Elm Street Arts District is a downtown gem, an avenue lined with Art Deco and Italianate architecture and, for shoppers, a wealth of opportunities in the form of antique shops and hip boutiques.

For an overview of the community’s background and culture, the Greensboro Historical Museum (greensborohistory.org; 130 Summit Ave.; 336-373-2043) is within easy walking distance nearby, as is the Greensboro Children’s Museum and the city’s Cultural Center.

The largest battle of the Revolutionary War took place just outside Greensboro, at Guilford Courthouse (nps.gov; 2332 New Garden Road; 336-288-1776), in March 1781.

The Americans lost but inflicted such heavy losses on the Brits, the battle is thought to have been a turning point in the conflict.

Guilford Courthouse is a National Military Park, managed by the National Park Service; it is heavily wooded and offers scenic, easily traversed walks along with a heady taste of time travel.

Finally, the Greensboro Arboretum (greensborobeautiful.org; 401 Ashland Drive; 336-373-2199) provides 17 acres and 14 plant collections and special display gardens. A 23-feet-tall trio of oversized wind chimes is a meditative delight.

Franklin Street in Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill Drive a little farther east and you’ll come to the almost prototypical university town, Chapel Hill.

Home to the University of North Carolina, the nation’s first public university, Chapel Hill is one third of the Research Triangle, including Durham and state capital Raleigh.

The town grew up around a small Anglican chapel, New Hope Chapel, built there in 1752.

The university opened its doors in 1795.

Surrounded by gentle hills and towering trees, Chapel Hill and the neighboring town of Carrboro are laid-back, yet cosmopolitan.

It’s a great place to relax and explore for a day or two, while enjoying some of the hippest cuisine you’ll find anywhere. And for basketball lovers, well, this is it: home of the Dean Dome, where legendary coach Dean Smith’s Tar Heels, including the likes of Michael Jordan, have made a history all their own.

Where to stay

The Carolina Inn (carolinainn.com; 211 Pittsboro St.; 800-962-8519) has occupied the site once held by New Hope Chapel since it was built in 1924. Today the inn is owned by the university; a portion of its profits support North Carolina collections held by UNC’s library.

The inn, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers 185 guestrooms and suites and has earned the AAA Four Diamond Award since 1997. The inn’s Carolina Crossroads Restaurant and Bar is a regional fine-dining destination.

But maybe you’d rather stay off campus. The Franklin (franklinhotel.com; 311 W. Franklin St.; 919-442-9000) is an elegant boutique hotel located at the epicenter of Chapel Hill’s main thoroughfare, Franklin Street. Walk out the door and you’re immediately in the thick of things.

There’s live jazz in the lounge, and some guest rooms include balconies.

The Inn at Bingham School (chapel-hill-inn. com; 6720 Mebane Oaks Road, Mebane; 919563-5583) is something else entirely. Located in the countryside, 11 miles outside Chapel Hill, it combines Southern hospitality with southern French atmosphere. There are four guest rooms furnished with antiques and fine rugs. Stroll the 10-acre grounds and learn to play petanque, a French version of bocce, or boules.

Crook’s Corner

Dining

Bon Appetit has named Chapel Hill “one of America’s Foodiest Small Towns.” If anything, this is an understatement, since Chapel Hill is home to the James Beard Award-winning Crook’s Corner (crookscorner.com; 610 W. Franklin St.; 919-929-7643), where some folks say modern Southern cuisine got its start. But there’s nothing high falutin’ about this place; it’s housed in an old service station. The exterior is still adorned with hubcaps. It feels like (and is) a neighborhood gathering place. That said, the food is superb. Go for whatever is seasonal, like Bill Smith’s soft shell crabs or the pan-seared tuna.

Lantern (lanternrestaurant.com; 423 W. Franklin St.; 919-969-8846) is just down Franklin Street. Its chef/owner, Andrea Reusing, is a James Beard Best Chef honoree who does an ingenious job of combining Asian flavors with North Carolina ingredients. How about braised red poll beef shank and brisket in broth, rare sirloin, oxtail dumplings, local vegetables, fresh wasabi and sea salt in something called Japanese Pot On Fire? Or a crispy whole North Carolina flounder with garlic, chilies, tamarind, fresh lime leaf, carrot salad and jasmine juice?

But if you’re looking for something more primal, try The Pig (thepigrestaurant.com; 630 Weaver Dairy Road; 919-942-1133). North Carolina is barbecue country, and The Pig will slay you with its antibiotic- and hormone-

free, pasture-raised pork. This is the place for topnotch, downhome barbecue, but you can also order fried chicken and catfish, Po-Boys, even homemade hot dogs. Vegetarians are more than welcome. Try the country-fried tofu or the barbecue tempeh.

Out and About

The Carolina Basketball Museum (goheels. com; 450 Skipper Bowles Drive; 919-9622211), on the UNC campus, is a must for hoops fans, as well as anyone interested in better understanding the local culture. There are artifacts, videos, photos and interactive presentations about UNC’s 18 Final Four appearances.

On Saturdays, the Carrboro Farmers Market (carrborofarmersmarket.com; 301 W. Main St.) is a must. Featuring fresh food from within a 50-mile radius, this is a great place to munch, browse and take in the scene in what has been called one of the 100 Best Art Towns in America.

And since Carrboro basically blends into Chapel Hill at Franklin Street, you can easily turn your Carrboro visit into a Franklin Street shopping stroll, checking out used and new books, CDs and vinyl, and vintage clothing in various shops. There’s also high-end men’s wear at Alexander Julian and a nifty museum shop associated with the university’s Ackland Art Museum, just off the corner of Franklin and Columbia streets.

Singing, more specifically Indiana University’s Singing Hoosiers, brought together Columbus native Hillary Apple and Indy native Cruz Baisa.

In the fall of Apple’s junior year, she auditioned for the singing group. Baisa, already an active member and manning the audition table, helped her register on the day of her tryout. “He listened in to my audition through the door,” Apple says. “We were good friends for almost a year before starting a romance.”

During a romantic weekend in December 2013, he proposed to her.

“Throughout college I had always talked about an old IU tradition that says a girl hasn’t fully graduated until she has been kissed in the Rose Well House at midnight,” Apple says. Baisa took her to the spot, in the pouring rain, and insisted on a picture.

“When we got there, he got down on one knee and proposed,” she says. “All of his family and mine then came out from their nearby hiding places to celebrate with us.”

The wedding, which featured ivory, blush pink, black and gold as the colors, had an eclectic/ old Hollywood vibe and was planned by wedding coordinator Ashleigh Fisher. Four of 10 members of the bridal party were Singing Hoosiers.

The bride wore a dress from Columbus’ wedding boutique, That Special Touch. They settled on a small, intimate ceremony at Beck Chapel on the IU campus.

“We wanted to go back to where we met and where we made a lot of our first memories together, so the IU campus just felt like the appropriate spot,” Apple says. “We had Cruz’s best man’s father, Tom Greist, get ordained online to marry us, and we did the traditional vows and also wrote our own.”

The reception, with 120 friends and family, was held in the IU Memorial Union solarium. “It was filled with beautiful light,” Apple says.

Columbus native Kristine Finke and Chad Polstra met during their senior year at Indiana State University, where Kristine studied interior design and Chad studied information technology.

“He lived across the hall from me,” Kristine says. “We were friends for a year, and then after we graduated he finally asked me out for our first date.”

After graduation, Kristine found work in Atlanta at a design firm, before moving on to her position as an event designer at Bold American Events. Chad quickly followed, and in July, shortly after their wedding, the couple marked seven years together.

With plenty of experience as a wedding designer, Kristine took the reins with regard to her own wedding. “When I got engaged, I was so excited to finally plan and design my own dream wedding,” she says. “Chad and I threw around getting married in Atlanta, but we really wanted family to be there and weren’t sure of guests traveling, so I set out to find the perfect venues in Indiana. The ones we chose were a great fit for our style and vision.”

Kristine had longed for a wedding at the Inn at Irwin Gardens, fostering a dream that she could one day get married there. “When I was searching for venues and heard it was open, I jumped on the chance, and it stole my heart,” she says. “I could just imagine walking down the aisle to this song that Chad and I have always loved. It gave me goose bumps thinking about it.”

Atlanta friend Ben Morgan officiated.

With its exposed brick walls and wooden columns and floor, Factory 12 Event Loft, the reception venue, reminded Kristine of places in Atlanta.

She brought more Southern vibes with her in a 16-foot truck loaded with everything she needed to execute her vision for her wedding day.

“It was everything I had ever hoped for,” she says. “The venues were breathtaking, and the day was perfect because I married my best friend.”

A Look Back

Horsing Around Voluptuous horse sculptures circle around an ash tree at W.D. Richards Elementary School. The shapely equine forms, executed in fiberglass, embodied a playful spirit appropriate to the late 1960s and early ’70s. Installed in 1970, the horses were created by Italian sculptor Costantino Nivola, a gift of J. Irwin and Xenia Miller, perhaps inspired by a similar herd of horses, also by Nivola, on a playground on the Upper West Side in New York City.
