10 Strategies to Stop Murdering Your Plants You can have a lush indoor landscape. Just follow these tips. “Stop her before she kills again!” Hear that? That’s your jade plant whispering to your bamboo palm every time you approach the windowsill. If you’re guilty of accidentally murdering your beloved houseplants, it’s not too late to stop the cycle! Whether you tend to neglect your greenery or drown it with too much water, the clever tips below will help you cultivate a thriving indoor garden in no time. 1. DON'T LISTEN

TO THE INTERNET

Not every site vets their advice as carefully as (ahem) others. Just say no to these popular internet ideas to water your plants: • A damp sponge in the bottom of the pot. • Melting ice cubes. • An upside-down bottle filled with water. No, no, and no. “Most houseplants die because they’re overwatered,” says Judy Feldstein, author of “Don’t Feed Me to Your Cat! A Guide to Poisonous Houseplants” and former owner of Foliage Unlimited, which designs, installs, and maintains houseplants. The damp sponge and drip systems are bad ideas, Feldstein says, because “if the soil stays moist all the time, no oxygen can get into the soil, the plant roots can’t breathe, and then they’ll rot, and the plant will die.” As for melting ice cubes, most plants have the same attitude toward water as Brits with their beer – room temperature, thank you very much. 2. WATCH YOUR WATER CONTENT “You don’t have to use bottled or distilled, but don’t use water that’s passed through a softener; it’s too salty,” Feldstein says. If you’ve been using softened water and your plants seem fine, it may be that you’ve chosen hardier plants — or not enough time has gone by. Softened water has sodium in it, and over a long period of time can build up and be toxic to your plants. If softened is your only option, create a reservoir at the bottom of the pot with rocks where the salt can collect, or periodically leach out the sodium with an alternate water source, like rainwater. Municipally added fluoride and chlorine can take their toll, too. “If your water contains a lot of fluoride or chlorine, fill your watering can and allow it to sit out overnight,” says Feldstein. “The chemicals will dissipate, and you can use the water.” 3. BE MORE AFRAID

OF

OVERWATERING THAN UNDERWATERING

You love your plants. But just like your grandma trying to hard-sell you a third serving of lasagna, sometimes too much love is just too much. Overwater and you’ll kill your plants. “Underwater, and your plants’ leaves may droop and yellow, but you can save the plant once you water it,” Feldstein says. How much is too much? If you pick up the pot and it’s lighter than it looks, chances are the soil’s dry. If you’ve got a large plant that you can’t lift, just stick your finger in the soil about an inch. If it’s not damp, it’s watering time. But don’t go overboard. Some plants need more water than others. Succulents, for example, don’t need much. Thin, delicate plants might need more water. Temperature, sunlight, even pot type (a clay pot will suck moisture away from your plant) all affect watering needs. Bottom line: Learn as much as you can about your plant. Some signs you might be overwatering: • Young and old leaves fall at the same time. • Root rot: mushy, brown, possibly odorous roots are in pot bottom. • Standing water hanging in container underliner. • Flowers become moldy. • Leaves develop brown soft rotten patches and fail to grow. 4. FEED THEM COFFEE AND EGG SHELLS Try mixing coffee grounds or egg shells into the soil. Yup. Garbage. Store-bought potting soil has all the nutrients your plants need, but about once a year, calcium-rich egg shells can give plants a great boost (do it too often and you’ll change the soil’s pH balance). Clean off the icky stuff, let them sit out to dry, and then crush them to a coarse powder. Pour that around the base of the plants, and water. Coffee grounds have nitrogen — yummy for plants. Different plants like a different amount of coffee, just like humans. To get a sense of how much to use, start with a teaspoon a week mixed into the soil, and then increase the amount until your plants stop showing signs of improvement. Then it should be good to go for a while. 5. KEEP 'EM SEPARATED (FROM YOUR PETS) Cat got your mother-in-law’s tongue? Hopefully not, because that plant can make your cat sick, and being eaten doesn’t work out well for the plant, either. Feldstein recommends the following to keep cats away: • Put orange or lemon rinds on the soil. (They don’t like the smell.)

12

• Spray spicy cayenne pepper on the leaves. • Place crumpled tin foil on the soil. (Cats aren’t fans.) • Put camphor balls in the soil if you’re brave enough to risk smelling like your grandma’s closet. “You might also give your cat a grassy plant of his own to play with,” Feldstein says. Yes, there are grasses you can grow just for your kitty. Typically a mix of oat, rye, barley, and wheat grasses, says the Humane Society. Introduce them to their own grass, and play with the leaves to pique their interest. 6. EASY ON

THE

FERTILIZER

Dilute your plant food. Too much fertilizer is worse than no fertilizer at all. “Fertilizers contain salts, which can build up in the soil,” Feldstein says. “It will burn the roots, and the tips of your plant leaves will go brown. Dilute the plant food one-half to one-quarter the recommended strength.” 7. GIVE PLANTS A HAIRCUT You know that light, airy feeling you have after a haircut? Your plants love it, too. Just because your spider plant is long enough to ring the room doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Pruning houseplants helps them grow stronger and more lush. Prune away dead leaves, limbs and flowers at the beginning of the growing season or after the plant has flowered. While there are a few plants that don’t need pruning, most are happier when they’re all spruced up. 8. PARK THEM

IN THE

RIGHT PLACE

Location, location. All plants need some amount of light to grow — whether sunlight or artificial light. But direct sunlight “will burn their leaves,” Feldstein says. Before setting your plant in a spot, place an object there and check brightness by watching the object’s shadow. Intense light means a more defined shadow. The direction from which sunlight is coming from can make a difference, too. Even plants that thrive in lots of sunshine may not be so happy in a west-facing window come spring or summer when the sun is most intense. And be aware that some plants, like ficus, can be so sensitive to cold air that placing it near the entry might aid its demise every time someone opens the door. 9. KNOW WHEN

TO

REPOT

Sometimes your plants will get too big for their clay britches. When that happens, it’s time to repot. To find out if your little one is ready to graduate, gently remove it from its pot. “If the roots have taken on the shape of the pot, it’s time to move to a larger pot,” Feldstein says. The new container should be about two inches wider and a couple of inches deeper than the old pot. “Then, don’t feed the plant [with fertilizer] for at least six weeks after repotting so it has time to acclimate. And, remember that now that the pot is larger it’ll take longer for the soil to dry and you won’t have to water as often.” 10. CHOOSE

THE

EASIEST PLANTS

TO

GROW

If you truly believe you’re the Norman Bates of plant owners, there’s still a way to enjoy the beauty and benefits of plant life in your home. Try plants with thicker leaves and stems; they’ll need less water. Think jade and aloe. Other easy-care plants include dracaena, pothos, and heart leaf philodendron. And then there are air plants, tillandsia, which still need to be watered, but grow without soil, getting all their nutrients from the air. In general, says Feldstein, “Buy plants that are so easy to care for that if you forget about them for three weeks, they’ll be fine.” STACEY FREED writes about homes, design, remodeling, and construction for online and print national trade and consumer publications, including “Better Homes & Gardens.” Previously, she was a senior editor at “Remodeling” magazine. 5 Tasks Every Homeowner Should Do in January Start looking for that contractor NOW if you want your project done by summer’s end. Whew. The holidays are done. The new year has rung in. That’s when smart homeowners know it’s time to do these five things that’ll save time, money, and hassles all year long: #1 ORGANIZE YOUR SEASONAL STORAGE SPACE Packing away holiday decor presents a big opportunity. It’s the best time to sort, declutter, and reorganize that space where you store your seasonal stuff. So before simply stuffing your holiday things back in there somewhere, take inventory, then sort, filter, donate, trash, and re-home as many of your things as possible. It’ll help keep you more organized all year long, and make it easier to find all your holiday stuff next year. #2 DEEP-CLEAN THE KITCHEN All of that holiday merriment-making is rough on a kitchen. Give it a good deep cleaning now that the glittery dust has settled. Purge your pantry and frisk your fridge, passing what you can on to local food banks. Scrub the walls and kickboards, and even pull those appliances right out from the walls for a thorough vacuuming to prevent gunk (and stinks!) from accumulating. #3 PLAN SUMMERTIME PROJECTS NOW (ESPECIALLY IF YOU NEED A PRO) Finalize plans for any landscaping, decks, patios, or other outdoor projects that need warm weather. Two good reasons: 1. If you’re DIYing, you’ll be ready to roll at the first hint of nice weather. 2. If you’re hiring a contractor or other professional, getting your bids and contracts in place now will save you from competing with the spring rush (wait too long, and you may not be able to book anyone!). #4 CREATE A SCHEDULE TO CLEAN ALL YOUR HOME'S FILTERS It’s not just your HVAC. The filters in your fridge, your vacuum cleaner, your dryer, your air filter, and other household items need to be changed or cleaned at least once a year to be effective, usually more often — especially your dehumidifier. Yucky mold grows easily there. Check manufacturer instructions for all the filters in your home, and create a master schedule, then add them to your calendar app to remind you. #5 Save Some Green at White Sales Linens and towels go on sale in January. It’s a long-standing retail tradition that started back when linens only came in white (hence the name), and still has a solid rep as a money-saver — only in more colors today. Cut your threadbare bath towels into rags and restock your supply, plus fill in any gaps in your bed linens you may have noticed if you had a house full of holiday guests. HOME finder.org Feature

The tip about coffee mugs? We’ve all been there. BY JAMIE WIEBE Did you ever notice that your self-improvement pacts with yourself are action oriented? Walk 10,000 steps a day. Fix that leaky faucet. Register for VolunteerMatch. But “get organized”? It’s a goal so broad that just trying to figure out what action to take makes you wonder what you were thinking in the first place. It’s like you need an organizing plan for your organizing. Ta da! Here it is. Follow these steps, spending less than an hour day (sometimes just a few moments), to a better organized home: 1. DO THAT PROJECT “What about your space is making you feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed?” asks Amy Trager, a professional organizer in Chicago. Is it the paperwork disaster in your office? The pile of clothes teetering on your dresser? Or that mess that surrounds your doorway? Start with what’s annoying you, she says. One hour on that task will get your organizing engine revving. 2. CREATE A "GO AWAY" BOX Put anything you’re planning to donate in it (or give to a friend, or take to recycle). And keep it by the door so you can easily grab it when you’re leaving. 3. DEAL WITH THE DECORATIONS Hallelujah — the holidays are over! When you’re putting away your décor, donate anything you didn’t bring out last season, and separate decorations by holiday. No need to dig through your St. Patty’s clovers when you’re searching for a menorah. 4. CREATE A SYSTEM FOR YOUR ENTRYWAY Set up a “command center” so your front door doesn’t become a lawless accessories arena, especially during winter months. Add hooks for coats, bins for shoes, and a mail sorter if you need it. (Remember to keep a place for your “go away” box). 5. WRANGLE YOUR PET SUPPLIES

cuisine, or by brand — whatever makes them easier to find when you’re in the middle of your noodle stir fry. 7. PARE DOWN YOUR UTENSILS You’ve accumulated several dozen kitchen utensils in your culinary career: can openers, microplanes, four (what?!) wine openers. Pare down the collection and use drawer dividers to keep the remainders in order. 8. RECONFIGURE YOUR POTS AND PANS Stop digging around in your shelves for the oversized, cast-iron skillet. Donate the pots and pans you hardly use, and install cupboard organizers to help manage the rest. 9. THROW AWAY EXPIRED FOODS You never use Worcestershire sauce — except that one time. Go through your refrigerator and pantry and ditch or donate anything past its prime. 10. STACK YOUR PANTRY STAPLES Make better use of your pantry by sorting through your staple dry goods — think flour, sugar, pasta, oatmeal, dry beans — and putting them in airtight, stackable containers. You’ll free up a ton of space, too. 11. DOWNSIZE YOUR KITCHEN GADGETS You had noble intentions when you purchased that spiralizer. (Zucchini noodles every night, right?) Give those space hogs to someone else with lofty dreams. 12. SAY NO TO COFFEE MUG OVER-SATURATION Every time you lose a sock, a new coffee mug appears. Keep one or two mugs for every coffee or tea drinker, and donate the rest. 13. SORT YOUR FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS No singles allowed. Toss any tops or bottoms that have no mates. 14. REASSESS YOUR DISPLAY SHELVES

Minimize the time spent scrambling when your pup is desperate for a walk or eager for a meal. Hang hooks and cubbies near the door and keep leashes, kibble, bowls, and toys in one convenient spot.

Shelves crammed with knickknacks, books you’ll never read, and stuff you somehow accumulated are just a waste of space. Donate books to the library, discard the junk, and arrange what’s left in a way that pleases you.

6. ORGANIZE YOUR SPICES

15. DEAL WITH YOUR CABLES

Arrange your herbs and spices alphabetically, by

With a Roku, PlayStation, DVD player, and a cable

22

HOME finder.org Feature box, it’s no surprise your entertainment center is a mess. Create ID tags for each plug from bread tags or cable ties, and bundle the clutter together with velcro strips. 16. PUT CLOTHES ON NEW HANGERS Switch your clothes over to the slimmer, grabbier hangers. They use less space and keep your clothes from sliding down to your closet floor. As you do this, discard the clothes you never wear. 17. CORRAL YOUR ACCESSORIES Belts, scarves, purses, hats — all the accessories that don’t have a drawer or spot in the closet can end up everywhere. Buy an accessories hanger or install a simple series of hooks to give your wardrobe’s smallest members a home. 18. PURGE UNDER THE BED Under-bed storage is ideal for out-of-season clothing. But when out-of-season becomes out-of-sight and out-of-mind, clear out those clothes you’ll never wear again from this precious storage space.

24. TACKLE UNDER-THE-SINK STORAGE Clean everything out. You’ll be amazed at what you find (like those Magic Erasers you could never find). Then put back everything you’re keeping in bins you can easily pull out so nothing gets lost again. 25. HANG A SHELF Wall storage is so often overlooked. Find a spot in your home where a shelf would solve a problem, and hang it. Maybe it’s for some toiletries in the bathroom, or laundry supplies, or for your kid’s stuffed toys. 26. REDUCE YOUR TOWELS AND LINENS There are the towels you use — and the stack of towels you never use. Donate them to the animal shelter. Those torn pillowcases? Convert to rags or toss. Same for napkins, dishtowels, pot holders, etc. 27. HANG A SHOE ORGANIZER Hanging shoe organizers can solve a ton of storage problems beyond the obvious. They can store scarves, mittens, cleaning supplies, craft supplies. You can even cut them to custom-fit inside a cabinet door.

19. DECLUTTER YOUR DESK

28. ORGANIZE YOUR JUNK DRAWER FOR GOOD

When your workspace is swimming with collectibles, staplers, Post-its, and more, paring down can keep you focused when it’s time to hunker down.

There’s no shame in a junk drawer — but why not organize it? Dump the whole thing on one surface and sort everything into piles. Use drawer dividers to keep each pile in its own space.

20. SHRED OLD PAPERWORK Not every form, statement, and tax record needs to stay in your filing cabinet forever. Check out “How Long to Keep Your Tax Records” to make sure you’re not wasting space. Shred the rest to ward off identity thieves. 21. TIDY YOUR FILES Now that you’ve shredded the paperwork you don’t need, tidy up your files by organizing them and labeling them clearly. Colorful folders can help organize by theme (home stuff, tax stuff, work stuff, etc.).

29. STORE YOUR TOOLS THE RIGHT WAY Finding the right Phillips-head screwdriver to put together that cute IKEA bookshelf shouldn’t be so hard. Track down your hammers and screwdrivers, and arrange them in one easy-to-access spot, such as a pegboard. 30. PLAN FOR THE FUTURE

22. GET RID OF MYSTERY ELECTRONICS

See how much you’ve accomplished! Take a look around your newly organized home, making note of any spaces you missed. Then dream a bit about your next home project. Maybe paint that dining room, finally?

Admit it. You’ve got a drawer where black mystery cords, chargers, and oddball electronic bits go to die. Free that drawer up for better uses, or at least get rid of the ones you know for sure are “dead.”

JAMIE WIEBE is a writer and editor with a focus on home improvement and design. Previously, she worked as a web editor for “House Beautiful,” “ELLE Decor,” and “Veranda.”

23. PARE DOWN YOUR PERSONAL CARE STUFF

8 Popular Tips That Cost Homeowners More in the Long Run Like using lemons in your disposal (don’t do it!). You’re always on the lookout for smart ideas and hacks to manage your home (and save money!) — whether that means listening to the wisdom of your parents who’ve owned a home longer than you’ve been alive, or scouring every corner of the internet for savvy tips. But just because a tip has been pinned, shared, and Instagrammed thousands of times doesn’t make it smart. Here are eight tips (myths, really) that most people believe are good advice, but instead will cost you cash you don’t need to spend: MYTH #1: LEMONS ARE GREAT

FOR

CLEANING GARBAGE DISPOSALS

What it could cost you: A plumber’s visit (and maybe a new disposal) Proceed with caution when it comes to this well-circulated DIY fix. Citric acid is a natural deodorizer, but plumbing experts say it can corrode the metal in your disposal. That tough lemon peel can also damage the grinding components and clog your pipes. Next thing you know you’re Googling reviews for plumbers. The better way: Turn on the disposal and, while running cold water, dump in two or more trays of ice cubes. Despite the clamor, this will safely dislodge buildup on the walls and the impellers, which grind up the food. MYTH #2: USE DUCT TAPE

TO

SEAL DUCTWORK

What it could cost you: Pricier energy bills Despite its name, don’t rely on duct tape to seal leaks in your HVAC’s ductwork. Testing by the U.S. Department of Energy found it deteriorates over just a few years (hot air from the HVAC system degrades the glue), letting conditioned air escape without doing its job. The better way: Use duct mastic (a gooey substance kind of like caulk that dries after applied) to seal metal and flexible ductwork, and use it along with a layer of fiberglass mesh for gaps larger than 1/16 of an inch wide. Use gloves with metal ducts because the edges can be sharp, and mastic is messy stuff. MYTH #3: BLEACH WILL BANISH MOLD What it could cost you: A threat to your health, plus hundreds of $ (even thousands) Although bleach can kill mold on non-porous surfaces, it isn’t effective on absorbent or porous materials — you know, the places it loves to lurk, like grout, caulk, drywall, insulation, and carpet, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Instead, it just bleaches it so you can’t see it. And diluted bleach can feed future mold growth (yikes!) because only the water will be absorbed, which mold just loves. The better way: Use a commercial anti-fungal product to take out mold at its roots. And only tackle mold removal yourself if the area is less than 10 square feet and you use protective gear, such as a respirator and chemical-resistant gloves. Otherwise, call in a mold remediation specialist who’ll know how to remove it without spreading it’s yucky (and potentially harmful) spores. Myth #4: Change Your HVAC Filter Every Month What it could cost you: Around $100 a year Although the air filter should be changed regularly to keep your home’s HVAC system operating efficiently, this piece of advice is more of a convenient general rule that could cause you to throw away perfectly good filters (and money!). “The harsh truth is that it’s easier to say, ‘Do it every month’ and know that means people might do it every three or four months,” says homeowner advocate Tina Gleisner of Home Tips for Women. The better way: The Department of Energy recommends checking, but not necessarily changing, your air filter every month. Change it if it looks dirty, replacing it at least once every three months. MYTH #5: BUY A RINSE AID

FOR

SPOT-FREE DISHES

What it could cost you: Dollars instead of cents Most dishwashers now come with a built-in dispenser for commercial rinse aids, plus a free sample to get you started. So now you’re hooked (spot-free glasses every time!), and it has become a regular item on your shopping list, even if it does cost almost $4 for 8 ounces. The better way: If you’ve never tried, run your dishwasher without a rinse aid. If your water is soft, your dishwasher may deliver spot-free sparkle without any extra help. But if you’re still seeing spots, just fill the rinse-aid dispenser with plain white vinegar (less than a 50 cents for 8 ounces). Money Tip: Rinse aid does help dishes dry faster, which stops those annoying wet drips from top rack to bottom when you unload. But instead of spending money, unload the bottom rack first while letting the top rack air dry. MYTH #6: HOME IMPROVEMENT

IS

ALWAYS A GOOD INVESTMENT

What it could cost you: Thousands of dollars in disappointment Dreaming of diving into your own pool or adding a second bath to put an end to those morning squabbles? That’s the beauty of owning your own home, you can renovate to make all your dreams come true. And you’ll get money back on most any improvement you do, but don’t expect it for all improvements. FYI: A new bath returns 52% of its cost. The better way: First off, your own happiness matters, so by all means, follow your remodeling bliss if you’re financially able. But if payback is important, do some research and talk to a REALTOR® who knows what buyers are seeking in your market. The Remodeling Impact Report from The National Association of REALTORS® (the sponsor of HouseLogic) is a fantastic resource to get the scoop on what projects will boost your equity the most. For example, it points out that small projects such as an insulation upgrade, refinishing floors, and even seeding your lawn will recoup almost all, and in some cases more than, your original investment.

26

MYTH #7: PUT DRYER SHEETS

IN

AIR VENTS

FOR A

SWEET SMELL

What it could cost you: Higher energy bills and a potential fire hazard Social media PSA: Thousands of pins and shares do not mean a remedy is smart or safe. If you follow this popular hack, you’ll block the flow of air in your vents, making your HVAC system work harder and increasing your energy costs. The blockage even can pose a fire risk when the furnace is pumping out hot air. The better way: If fragrant air is what you’re after, there are no shortage of options available that won’t burn your house down. Give each room — or each day — a signature scent with all-natural scented candles, sprays, oils, and aromatherapy devices. If you’re seeking a scent to mask an offensive odor, however, it’s important to find and remove the source. Some stinky suspects — like mold, mildew, sewage, and gas leaks — can carry health risks. Myth #8: Product Warranties Will Save on Repair Costs What it could cost you: $50 to $100 or more The last time you bought a major appliance or even a hand mixer, you were probably offered a warranty or service plan. While marketed to cover repair costs, these contracts typically cost more than you would ever spend to fix an item. And keep in mind that most manufacturers offer at least a 90-day warranty anyway. The better way: Maintain the appliance as recommended by the manufacturer, and smartly stash the dollars you would spend on a warranty in a repair fund instead. Also, buy with a major credit card, such as AmEx or Visa. Many credit card companies extend product warranties (for free!) up to a year or so. Might be worth checking to see if yours does. How to Create the Garage Workshop of Your Dreams A weekend and a few hundred bucks can unleash your inner craftsman. Garages often harbor a not-so-secret second life: heroic home workshop. They’re well-suited to the task, with a tolerance for the noise and dust of do-it-yourself projects. But if a garage workshop isn’t comfortable and convenient to use, you’ll avoid projects rather than enjoy them. Here are the essentials: • Adequate work space. Ideally, you’ll need room to work even when your cars are parked inside. Figure a minimum area of 10 ft. long and 6 ft. deep. • Appropriate storage. Places for tools and supplies are mandatory — the top of your work surface doesn’t count! • Excellent lighting. Both task and ambient lighting help keep you safe and projects mistake-free. • Durable surfaces. Pound away on your work surface — it can take it. • Easy-to-clean environment. You can assemble a basic workbench, cabinets, shelving, and add simple overhead lighting for less than $500. At the other end of the spectrum, there’s no end; you can spend tens of thousands of dollars creating an ultimate garage shop showplace. YOUR WORKBENCH — HEART AND SOUL OF DIY Your primary work surface should be a rock-solid bench with a hard and heavy top. Buy or build the best you can manage. (Then vow to keep the top clear — tools and materials have a way of eating up workbench space). Premade workbenches run $100 to $500 and come in many lengths; they’re usually 24 inches deep. A 38-inch height is typical, but you might be more comfortable with a work surface as low as 36 or as high as 42 inches. Some benches include vises, drawers, and shelves. Build one yourself using readily available plans. A simple, sturdy workbench takes less than a day to build and materials cost less than $100. The Family Handyman magazine offers detailed instructions for several, including an inexpensive, simple bench. A more complex bench with a miter saw stand and drawers costs $300-$500 to build and takes a weekend. The Right Bright Light Garage work surfaces need bright ambient light and strong task lighting. • High-intensity lights (halogen, LEDs, and others) are great for over-bench task lighting. An LED task light with a flexible goose-neck ($75-$150) puts light where you need it. • If your garage has a finished ceiling, recessed fixtures (can lights) are inexpensive ($10-$20) and are good for task and ambient lighting. • Ceiling-mounted fluorescent light fixtures are the classic, low-cost solution for workshop lighting. A two- or four-bulb, 48-inch fluorescent fixture costs less than $50. When shopping for workshop lighting, think lumens rather than watts. A lumen is a measure of lighting brightness, and is a handy way to compare today’s new energy-efficient light bulbs. Lighting fixtures and bulbs have labels that indicate lumens per device. A general rule of thumb is to use 130 to 150 lumens per square foot of work space. For example, a 40-watt fluorescent bulb puts out about 2,200 lumens. A 60-watt incandescent bulb puts out about 800 lumens. ADDING ADEQUATE ELECTRICAL POWER Along with your new lights, be sure your garage workshop has adequate electrical service — outlets and capacity — to accommodate your arsenal of power tools. Place outlets nearby; don’t depend on extension cords stretched across your garage — they can be a tripping hazard. If you don’t have 30-amp circuits on your garage service, talk with an electrical contractor about making this simple upgrade. Ballpark $75-$100 an hour for an electrical contractor, plus a probable service-call fee of $50 to $100. Rates will vary across regions of the country. Good electricians work quickly, so installing shop lights might take only an hour or two if access to electrical service is readily available. Increasing circuit capacity generally requires running new, heavier-gauge wire from your circuit-breaker box to the shop site. STORAGE: EVERYTHING

IN ITS

PLACE

Don’t make yourself rummage through old coffee cans full of rattling bolts and bits: Visit home improvement centers for garage storage ideas and products. Modular, wall-mounted garage storage systems let you configure shelves, bins, and hooks the way you need. Cost is about $10 per sq. ft. of wall space. Plastic bins and hefty tubs protect tools, sandpaper, and tool manuals from insects, rodents, and dust. A 10-gallon plastic tub with lid is $5$8. Old kitchen cabinets, available where salvaged building materials are sold, are a great way to add storage — and a homemade workbench. Salvaged cabinets are about 50-75% cheaper than new. Top a run of cabinets with ¾-inch plywood for a durable work surface. LARRY ERICKSON is a features writer and essayist for newspapers and magazines. The 9 Super Useful Tools Every DIYer Needs That tape measure you have? It’s probably all wrong. Those spare Allen wrenches and $1 tape measure from Ikea aren’t going to cut it if you’re making real home improvements. Here are the nine essential tools you need to start hammering out great projects: #1 TWO HAMMERS You know you need a hammer. Duh. But Beth Allen, a licensed contractor and DIY instructor, is about to blow your mind: You don’t need a hammer. You need two. A lightweight hammer is important for more delicate projects, like adding trim to a bookcase (without the fear of splitting said trim) or putting a nail into drywall. “Heck, I’ve used a shoe for that kind of hammering,” says Allen, which gives you an idea of how lightweight we’re talking. “You can even use the floral hammer that comes in those ‘lady’ toolsets.” But don’t let that be your only one: You’ll need a heavy-duty hammer for nailing into studs or putting a big anchor in the wall. She recommends fiberglass over wood for avoiding intense vibrations in your hand while crushing your first project (figuratively, we hope). #2 A LONG, STURDY TAPE MEASURE What’s wrong with your trusty Ikea measuring tape? “It must be at least 25 feet!” Allen says. “That move where you measure partway, run out of tape, and have to use your toe as a placeholder? Nope, nope, nope.” Take it from a pro: That measurement-fudging dance causes miscalculations that can run you big bucks in mistakes — we’re talking, like, realizing those freshly delivered kitchen appliances don’t actually fit in their designated spots. Whoops. A grown-up measuring tape that’s long, wide, sturdy, and equipped with a solid locking mechanism. You want one made of steel, which conveniently is the most widely available option. And make sure to invest in one with red rectangles every 16 inches, which is the standard width between wall studs. #3 Your Dream Drill Allen gets downright giddy when she talks about her cordless drill. Not crushing on yours in the same way? Then you haven’t found the right one. “To start, don’t even look at something smaller than 12 volts,” she says. “You’re not going to have enough power to even drill into wall studs without hearing the motor grind. You do not want to hear that thud thud thud of stripping a screw.” Allen also recommends a rechargeable model with a pair of lithium batteries on the side so you’ll never be without a charge — and never have to fight with a cord while squeezing in a tight or awkward place, like closets. Plug-in drills do have more power, but most home DIYers don’t need that extra power for two reasons: 1. You’re not exactly building a house from scratch (right?) 2. A cordless model allows for a steady flow of torque, meaning you don’t have to worry about how hard or gently you pull the trigger. Best way to find the perfect drill: Find one you can hold above your head comfortably for about 30 to 45 seconds. And don’t bother fussing over the brand. Store-brand drills can be just as quality as the major labels. “You can find a great drill, especially during sale season, for $70 to $100.” #4 A JIGSAW When most DIY newbies think of saws, they think of the rotating blade attached to a table. Not your best starter saw. “A table saw will take your fingers off,” Allen warns. For the sake of your digits, a simple, cordless jigsaw is a better choice. A jigsaw also is lightweight enough to carry and cut wherever you need, and versatile enough to cut delicate pieces like trim or molding — it can even cut curves when needed. A jigsaw has a slower pace, and the blade does downward strokes, which means it’s safer because the debris falls down, not out. Most stores will have options suited for smaller hands, lefties, and those who prefer an ergonomic tool. To get the most out of your jigsaw, add on an assortment of blades that will let you cut metal and PVC. A $10 combo-blade package should do it.

#5 A TILE SAW Got tiles? Want tiles? If you have even a single tile project coming up, let us assure you, you want to own your own tile saw. Tile projects can be tedious and time consuming, and if you’re rushing to return it on time, you could end up with sloppy work. Look for something in the $100 to $150 range, keeping in mind that rentals will run you about $50 per day for the most simple one. Plus, it’ll see you through future tile projects, from fireplace surrounds to bathroom backsplashes, even patio pavers. Ooo! The starter diamond-cut blade your saw comes with should last you through a few hundred square feet, so no need to pick up extras right away. The tile saw is a good reminder for buying versus renting for all tools: Consider how many times you’re likely to use it, get prices on buying and renting, and do the math. You might be surprised how often treating yourself is the more economical option. #6 TWO PAIRS

OF

SAFETY GLASSES

When you’re DIYing, the weather is always cloudy with a chance of wood chips. Or drywall dust. Or tile flakes. Not things you want in your eyes. Look for a pair of safety glasses that fit comfortably (“like sunglasses!” says Allen), and wrap around on the side to protect you from all angles. “Try them on and look down — that’s the way your face will be angled while working,” Allen recommends. “They shouldn’t slide off or feel too snug, otherwise they’ll drive you crazy and you’ll want to pull them off.” Don’t feel shy about shaking your head around in the store to make sure they feel good when you’re moving, and if you live somewhere especially hot or cold, look into options with anti-fog coating. And this is one piece of equipment you don’t want to skimp on. “I’d avoid the dollar store options,” says Allen. “Your vision is your life, and anytime there’s the possibility of projectile anything, you’d be a fool not to wear a quality pair.” Why two pairs? Because there’s often someone holding up the shelf while you drill, or keeping the wood steady as you saw — and they’ll probably want their eyesight later too. #7 SHOP-VAC When you’re in the midst of any sort of project (especially ifyou do any demo in older homes), you may have no idea what gross or potentially dangerous stuff is inside the construction dust you’re generating, so getting rid of it as quickly as possible is just smart. Don’t be tempted to use your house vacuum — it’s not made for home-project debris, and could clog your motor. To handle your DIY successes (and fails), you’ll want one that has at least a gallon capacity and 5.0 “peak,” which is the power and speed at which it sucks stuff up. Keep in mind it has to be light enough for you to comfortably carry both empty and when it’s filled with a gallon of watersoaked sawdust or sand. #8 AN OUTDOOR EXTENSION CORD You’ll need that for the shop-vac and other tools! And like the measuring tape, go with quality and length. “At least 50 feet,” says Allen. Your shop-vac will require a cord with 12-amp power and a three-prong plug on both ends — a more expensive option than your typical two-prong, 14-amp cord, but a worthy upgrade. (And yes, you read that right: 12 amps powers more than 14 amps. Lower amps equals higher power capacity. Weird, we know.) #9 SOMETHING TO PUT IT ALL IN Your dad might make a big fuss about handing down his first toolbox to you, but maybe use that as a decorative planter (Pinterest it! It’s cute!). The truth is, there are way better options today. “Look for one on wheels, like your favorite carry-on suitcase,” says Allen. Your biggest priority is to choose something you’re going to be able to move around easily. Why haul every tool to the project site individually? Look for deep drawers and shallow trays so you can easily organize the itty-bitty things like bits and store the bulky stuff, too.
