14 Garage Organization Ideas Under $50

Easy-to-afford solutions for your tools, sporting and seasonal gear (so you’ll have room for your car, too). If you’ve got a garage, most likely you’ve got waaayyyy more than cars in there. It’s the catch-all place to keep stuff (mostly) out of sight and out of mind. Put order to the chaos and protect your car’s paint job with simple storage systems and organizing hacks for everything from sports equipment to tools. BIKES, SKATES, AND OTHER WHEELS #1 Hoist bicycles to the rafters with a rope-and-pulley system (starting around $40) that makes it easy to raise the bike and lock safely in place. When you’re ready to ride, release the lock and lower your bike to the garage floor. You’ll need an hour or two and basic tools to secure the pair of pulleys to ceiling joists and thread the ropes. (Similar hoists are available for kayaks or small boats; starting around $25.) #2 Use a specially designed wall rack to hang helmets and skateboards together; starting around $20. Secure this one to wall joists in less than an hour. #3 Keep scooters and bikes out of the way with tool hooks installed on a length of 1-by-6-inch lumber. You’ll pay $3 for each pair of vinyl-coated screw-in tool hooks and $1 per foot for lumber. You’ll need only an hour or two to secure the lumber to wall joists and screw the hooks into place along the board. SPORTING GOODS #4 Bring together balls and bats on a convenient wire rack equipped with hangers that hold gloves too; starting around $35. #5 Stash two pairs of snow skis, poles, and boots in one handy steel ski rack; $45. Securing this rack to wall studs helps it hold the weight of the equipment. If you can’t position it on studs, use wall anchors for a secure installation. You can do the task with or without anchors in an hour or two. #6 Stow your fishing rods by suspending two wire shelves from your garage ceiling about 5 feet apart, then threading the rods through the openings. Use shelves left over from a project or purchase a 4-foot-by-16-inch vinyl-coated wire shelf for less than $9, and saw it in half crosswise (or clip with bolt cutters) to make two 2-foot shelves. Snip additional wires where you need wider slots to accept pole handles or reels. TOOLS #7 Hang wrenches and bungee cords using an ordinary vinyl-coated wire tie-and-belt rack, available at big box stores; $8. #8 Hang metal tools on a magnetized rail, keeping items in view and easy to retrieve; starting around $30. Simply screw the rail to wall studs to safely hold the weight of the tools (it’s an idea you may be drawn to.) #9 Cushion and protect tools by padding your toolbox drawers with a soft, non-slip liner. The open-weave design keeps moisture away and prevents tools from rolling around. Enough material to line eight average-size drawers is $15. Just cut the liner to length to fit and slip it into the drawer. #10 Organize small items — such as pencils, box cutters, and tape measures — by stashing them in electrical junction boxes; about $2 each (free if you have spares). Purchase a variety of sizes and shapes and secure them to studs or pegboard. Yard and Garden Gear #11 Transform an old filing cabinet into storage bins for various yard tools. Remove the drawers, turn it on its backside, and use a couple afternoons to apply paint and pegboard sides. Less than $25. #12 Mount heavy tools, long-handled implements, and ladders on long steel rails with extruded holes high on the garage wall and secured to studs. Add hooks and pegs on the rail to hang big tools. Two 48-inch rails sell for $22. #13 Secure a wooden pallet to wall studs to create a pocket for holding long-handled garden tools. To find free wooden pallets, check with local businesses as well as online classifieds, such as Craigslist. Cost: Free. #14 Use a can rack to keep bottles of fertilizers, repellants, and lubricants upright and easy to retrieve. Rack ($15) prevents cans and bottles from tumbling off shelves. JAN SOULTS WALKER Nationally published home improvement writer Jan Soults Walker has more than 30 years’ experience, remodeling several of her own homes and reporting on everything from kitchen sinks to luxurious mansions. Even now, a deck of paint chips still makes her heart sing. These 7 Knock-Out Projects Will Make You Say, “Yes I Can!” Beautiful you-can-do-it inspirations for easy DIY projects. As anybody who’s been inspired by HGTV can tell you, DIY projects on TV look amaaaazing. But DIY renovations in real life: kiiiinda the toughest thing ever. And, yet, these rookie craftsmen did beautiful, jawdropping work that will totally inspire you. Check them out! #1 PINTEREST-WORTHY WINDOW SEAT An empty recess in a room is a ripe spot for a DIY project, as home improvement blogger Britt Kingery can tell you. She and her husband, Justin, built a window seat so ridiculously Pinterest-worthy you’ll want to make one for yourself (like, right now). It’s a roomy 10-foot beauty, so you can seat a houseful of guests without dragging chairs all over the place. And (bonus!) there’s storage underneath for stashing lots of stuff out of sight. You can custom-create your own for about $250 if you’ve got a few essential DIY tools. Or you can do an Ikea hack to get the same result. Just attach one of their long, horizontal storage systems to your walls. Then add cushions and preformed molding for the same custom look. #2 MIRACLE MAKEOVER WITH JUST PAINT, STAIN (AND PATIENCE) “The Brady Bunch”-orange wall and abused floors in the before photo are homely enough to strike you blind. But what a miracle paint, sanding, and stain can do! Lighter shades on the walls, trim, and floor reflect natural light, making the space so much brighter. And for very little money (about $150). The key to such an amazing transformation, Kingery says, is to be a tortoise, not a hare. Sanding, taping, patching holes, and waiting on stain, paint or polyurethane to dry takes care and patience if you want professional-looking results. “The big reveal doesn’t happen overnight, and a renovation almost always looks worse before it looks better.” #3 INSTANT OPEN FLOOR PLAN Cramped, dark kitchens are so very 1981. Sarah Lemp of the “All Things With Purpose” blog turned her dated kitchen into an open, light-filled space that feels and functions like a larger room. The cost? $300. Yep. For less than the cost of a set of countertop canisters at Williams Sonoma, Lemp worked magic. The biggest fix? She just removed a set of overhead cabinets that blocked light and the view into the dining area, making an instant open floor plan. Then she turned to paint, the budget remodeler’s friend. She used a soft griege (designer-speak for grayish beige) for the walls of the kitchen and dining area. She painted the remaining upper cabinets white, and the bottom ones dark gray. “I love the look of white cabinets, but figured a darker color was more kid-friendly,” she says. Lemp skipped the requisite subway tile backsplash and went with peel-and-stick shiplap instead. “It was easier and cheaper,” she says. #4 BRIGHTER BEDROOM WITH PAINT AND WOOD This may be an ugly room, but we’re not sure because it’s so dark all we can see are cheap blinds and a poofy valance that hasn’t been fashionable since the Olsen twins were toddlers.

18

It needed major help. Ashley Rose and Jared Smith of the blog “Sugar and Cloth” pulled off a weekend makeover by painting the walls a lighter color and replacing the window treatments with wispy, white drapes that practically pull sunlight into the room. A pair of wall-mounted reading lamps added a second layer of light, because a lonely overhead fixture can’t light the whole room all by itself. And that wall behind the bed? It’s strips of reclaimed wood with an adhesive backing. Peel, stick, and you’re done. No nails. No glue. And just one tool: a level to make sure you stick the wood strips in a straight line. Awesome. #5 AN EASY-PEASY BACKYARD PATIO Dirt’s ugly. It’s also a pain, turning into mud when it rains, dust when it doesn’t, and sneaking into your house on the feet of dogs and kids. Covering it with a paver patio is a great fix. Chelsea Foy of the blog “Lovely Indeed” built this one in a neglected flower bed in just 10 hours. She used patio stones molded to look like several individual bricks, because leveling one large stone is tons easier than leveling a bunch of bricks. Those arcs of large river rocks just off the patio make a natural-looking transition between the factory-perfect pavers and the rest of the yard. They’ll also give you less lawn to mow or flowers to tend. #6 FANCY WALL MOLDING FOR A BARGAIN PRICE Wall molding makes a room look so custom, so finished, so much better than boring old drywall. But it costs around $25 a square foot just for the materials. Mysha Barton of the blog “Remington Avenue” pulled it off along her stairs for just $30 — total. The secret? She used MDF (medium density fiberboard, aka fake wood) to keep it cheap, and didn’t mount it in the traditional way with board panels on the wall. Instead, she put thinner “chair rail molding” directly on the wall, and painted everything white, including the wall to get that rich look of molding. The toughest part was cutting all those angles, Barton says. She got it done with a miter box and a handsaw. “My advice is to use scrap wood to practice your angled cuts before taking on your expensive molding pieces.” Barton did this project in just eight hours with three small children in the house, so even if 10th-grade geometry made you cry, you can do this. #7 A SPACE-SAVING WORKBENCH A DIY workbench is a gateway project, one that can lead you to harder projects and possibly, a home improvement addiction. Make this workbench your very first project and you’ll have room to do scads of projects — money-saving ones. It’ll fit in a small space because it’s actually a door mounted on door hinges, so you can fold it flat against the wall when you’re not using it. Be sure to buy a solid wood door, not a hollow one, so it’s sturdy enough to stand up to years of projects. LEANNE POTTS is an Atlanta-based journalist and serial home remodeler. She’s tackled five fixer-uppers and is working on a sixth. She’s written about everything from forest fires to dog-friendly decor and spent a decade leading the digital staff of HGTV. Homes don’t clean themselves. But these easy-peasy rules (wake and make!) will make you feel like they do. BY AMY HOWELL

Why not pickup a hitchhiker or two?

Here’s the thing you may have noticed about houses: They don’t clean themselves.

Every time you leave a room, take a quick scan for anything that belongs where you’re going, and you’ll start habitually keeping clutter under control.

Which is unfortunate, because if houses cleaned themselves you could spend less time cleaning yours, and more time doing something more fun, like watching “The Golden Girls,” because dang, that’s actually a great show. A few simple daily habits could make it seem like you’ve got a self-cleaning house. Rules like … #1 DEDICATE 20 MINUTES A DAY EVERY DAY You don’t need to set aside 20 hours one day to get things in order. You only need 20 minutes every day. Focus on tackling clutter in just one room. You might only pare down a single drawer or shelf, but “it will make you feel accomplished at the end of the day, and at the end of a week, you will see how much you can declutter,” says professional organizer Helena Alkhas. #2 FOLLOW A "ONE-MINUTE" RULE

#5 DEAL WITH YOUR MAIL EVERY TIME YOU BRING IT IN With so much of your important mail going straight to your inbox, sometimes you’ve got days of fliers and junk mail to wade through every time you make it to the USPS mailbox. To banish paper clutter from your home — and make sure you catch anything actually worth reading — immediately sort through your mail, recycling the nonsense and putting the keepers in an assigned spot. #6 SCAN AND TRASH WEEKLY You don’t really have to choose between forgetting what time the reception starts and stumbling over your cousin’s wedding invite for three months. Thanks to this fancy technology stuff, you can clear out all receipts, invitations, insurance documents, and other important paperwork.

Small tasks add up quickly when you’re saving them to do all at once. So if it takes less than a minute to complete, do it immediately.

Take a few minutes every weekend to scan and save everything, then toss it all it the recycling. With smartphone apps like Genius Scan, you always have the tools in the palm of your hand.

Put that cup in the dishwasher rather than the sink.

#7 TIDY UP DURING DOWNTIME

Break down that Amazon box for recycling right after you unbox your goodie.

In the five minutes it takes to nuke your lunch, you can unload and possibly reload the dishwasher, or wipe off the countertops and appliances. You’ll be surprised how much order you can restore to your home during these normally wasted waiting-on-something moments.

(Hot tip: Want a reminder of how much you can get done in a minute? Next time your coffee goes cold, pop it in the microwave for a minute, and just stand there. For the whole minute. It’s kind of a long time.) #3 START A LOAD OF LAUNDRY BEFORE WORK If you have a full load in the hamper, toss it in while you’re getting ready for work. By the time you leave, it will be ready for the dryer. When you get home, you’ll already feel ahead of schedule with just a little fluffing and folding to do. Just make sure you’ve properly maintained your dryer to reduce the risk of a fire. #4 ALWAYS LEAVE A ROOM WITH SOMETHING IN HAND Whatever room you’re in, chances are there’s a toy, cup, blanket or T-shirt that needs to be delivered back to another room. Oh hey, conveniently, you’re always walking into other rooms.

#8 MAKE YOUR BED AS SOON AS YOU GET UP There’s a reason the Marines start the day with this simple task — also known as “wake and make.” According to retired Admiral William H. McRaven, author of “Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life … and Maybe the World,” “It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.” #9 DO CHORES IN THE SAME ORDER Whether you’re cleaning on a Saturday or Wednesday, your mind (and body) will move more quickly from vacuuming to mopping to dusting if you check chores off in the same order — making it easier to keep your home tidy and clean. Headphones and a throwback playlist are a recommended, but not required, part of the routine.

22

HOME finder.org Feature #10 SPOT-CLEAN BATHROOMS NIGHTLY Just as clutter attracts clutter, bathroom funk quickly multiplies. Stock every bathroom with Lysol wipes and you can quickly and easily clean the countertop and toilet when you brush your teeth or help the kids get ready for bed, Alkhas says. While wiping, you’ll naturally put away the floss, hair ties, and other clutter in your path. #11 STOP DIRT AND CLUTTER AT THE DOOR Establish a house rule that shoes, bags, jackets, and “pocket items” — your keys, sunglasses, wallet, and phone — are stowed in a drop zone at the door.

So have a “The Brady Bunch”-style family meeting to make sure everyone understands their responsibilities and chores for maintaining order in the home. Serve brownies. They’ll show up. AMY HOWELL HIRThas written about home design for 13 years. Her work has been published by outlets including “The Home Depot,” “USA Today,” and Yahoo! Homes. She previously served as home and garden writer and columnist for “The Cincinnati Enquirer.”

Make this easy to enforce by assigning one hook and open shelf for every member of the family — double that for those with lots of extracurriculars, Alkhas says.

Attention BBOR Affiliate Members!

#12 CLEAN OUT THE FRIDGE WEEKLY The night before your garbage day, “wipe off the shelves and clean out anything that has no chance of being eaten,” Alkhas says. You’ll get a clearer view of your food options and open up space for ingredients needed in the coming week. #13 EMPTY THE DISHWASHER EVERY MORNING The conquest of a homemade dinner (OK, a “home-prepared” dinner, most days) feels short-lived when you’re left with a mountain of dishes and no place to put them.

Service Directory Advertisements are for Affiliate Members ONLY!

Take a couple minutes every morning to empty the dishwasher and you’ll stay ahead of the game. #14 CONDUCT A NIGHTLY TIDY-UP Every night, take a laundry basket on a tour of your house and pick up anything that’s out of place. “You don’t have to put it away now. If you want, plan to do it on Saturday and it won’t take much time at all,” Alkhas says.

If you are already advertising in Homefinder.org, you may qualify for reduced rates in the directory.

If there are more than two people in your household, separate the day’s clutter into assigned baskets for each family member to put away daily or weekly. With this routine, Alkas adds, “you’ll wake up to a living room that’s decluttered and a kitchen that is tidy, and you can start your day fresh.” #15 FOLLOW A CLEAN-OUT SCHEDULE FOR YOUR STORAGE AREAS

Call 812-325-1271 or email pubs@homefinder.org for more information.

Just because it’s hidden behind a cupboard door doesn’t mean it’s exempt from clutter status. Establish a schedule, perhaps every month, to rid a specific storage space of its dead weight — like expired food in the pantry, excess gadgets in a kitchen drawer, or the cupboard holding the gazillion ragged dishtowels you’ve had since your tiny college studio apartment. (It’s time to let those go.) #16 KEEP EVERYONE INVOLVED When one person leaves a dish in the sink, it paves a slippery slope for others to follow suit.

4 Ways to Erase Ugly Scratches From Wood Floors Get your crayons out for the coolest solution of all. Dogs chase kids, pans drop, chairs scrape, and soon you must repair wood floors and erase scratches that make a mess of your red oak or Brazilian cherry. A professional floor refinisher will charge $1 to $4 per square foot to apply a new coat of finish. No worries. We’ve got inexpensive ways to remove wood scratches and repair deep gouges in a few easy steps. #1 USE CRAYONS AND SHARPIE PENS

TO

HIDE SMALL SCRATCHES

Take some artistic license to hide minor scratches in wood floors by rubbing on stain-matching crayons and Sharpie pens. Wax sticks, such as Minwax Stain Markers, are great scratch busters because they include stain and urethane, which protects the floor’s finish. Don’t be afraid to mix a couple of colors together to get a good match. And don’t sweat if the color is a little off. Real hardwoods mix several hues and tones. So long as you cover the contrasting “white” scratches, color imperfections will match perfectly. #2 USE HOMEMADE POLISH

TO

CAMOUFLAGE SCRATCHES

Mix equal parts olive oil and vinegar, which work together to remove dirt, moisturize, and shine wood. Pour a little directly onto the scratch. Let the polish soak in for 24 hours, then wipe off. Repeat until the scratch disappears. #3 SPOT-SAND DEEP SCRATCHES It takes time to repair wood gouges: Sand, fill, sand again, stain, and seal. Here are some tips to make the job go faster. • Sand with fine-gauge steel wool or lightweight sandpaper. • Always sand with the grain. • Use wood filler, which takes stain better than wood putty. • Use a plastic putty knife to avoid more scratches. • Seal the area with polyurethane, or whatever product was used on the floor originally. • Apply the polyurethane coat with a lambs wool applicator, which avoids air bubbles in the finish. #4 USE WOOD PUTTY TO FILL GAPS Old floorboards can separate over time. Fill the gaps with colored wood putty. Or, if you have some leftover planks, rip a narrow band and glue it into the gap. 81 Staging Tips That Help Buyers Fall in Love

Their agent won’t have to say, “Picture this.” Buyers will see your home at its best.

Staging your house can make you money. Seventy-one percent of sellers’ agents believe a well-staged environment increases the dollar value buyers are willing to offer, according to the National Association of REALTORS® “2015 Profile of Home Staging.” Just take this real world tale of two condo listings from Terrylynn Fisher, a REALTOR® with Dudum Real Estate Group in Walnut Creek, Calif., who also stages:

Both units were in the same complex. One hadn’t been staged or updated since it was built; the other was staged and had been slightly refreshed (a little paint here and there and one redone bath). Otherwise, both units were the same size and layout. The staged condo sold for about $30,000 more than the unstaged unit, she says. “People couldn’t believe it was the same model.” Before your eyes turn into dollar signs, keep in mind staging isn’t guaranteed to get you more money. But it’s an important marketing tool to help you compete at the right price, which means you can sell faster. (A study from the Real Estate Staging Association bears this out.) Helping buyers fall in love with your property takes more than running the vacuum and fluffing the pillows: It’s all about decluttering, repairing, updating, and depersonalizing, say real estate agents and stagers. With help from Fisher and other sources, we’ve compiled the ultimate home staging checklist. LIVING ROOM • When placing anything from accent pillows and table lamps, go for symmetry, which is pleasing to the eye. • Light it up with lamps. Chic lamps provide both added lighting and appealing decor. • Make that fireplace glow. Scrub away soot stains and replace the old screen. • If you’re using staging furniture or buying slip covers, choose light colors for an airy, inviting feel. • Whatever amount of furniture you have in your living room, remove a few pieces to make the room feel spacious. • Use bright, coordinated accessories like accent pillows and throw blankets for a chic splash of color. • Help buyers imagine their life in your home. Set the scene by displaying a board game or tea service on the coffee table, and arrange furniture in conversational groups. • Let a slideshow of beautiful images play on your television like a screensaver. KITCHEN • Clear everything from countertops except one or two decorative items, like a vase of flowers or bowl of fresh fruit. • Pack up all the dishes except one attractive, matching set. Do the same with glassware, flatware, and cookware, and pare down all other cupboard and drawer items down to the minimum. • Freshen up and modernize those cabinets with a fresh coat of paint or stain and new hardware. • Seriously evaluate your appliances. Can they look new again with a good scrubbing? Give it the old college try or consider replacing with new models. The Real Estate Staging Association strongly recommends stainless steel. Tip: You can get the look of stainless for the cost of a cheap dinner with stainless films. • Remove those fridge magnets and give the door and handles a good cleaning. • Scrub dirt, grime, and stains from walls, cabinets, and backsplashes. • Clean cabinet interiors, especially under the sink. • Clean and organize the pantry, leaving some empty space to make it look bigger. Store items in decorative baskets and display a few jars of fancy jam and other upscale condiments. BEDROOMS • Go gender neutral in the master bedroom. Ditch those dainty, floral pillow shams or NASCAR posters. • Pack up all but the clothes you’re wearing this season to make you closets look larger. • Swap out the motley crew of mismatched hangers in your closet for a set of wooden ones to create a classy, boutique look. • Put jewelry and other valuables in a safe spot. • Consider giving extra bedrooms a new identity as a home office, sewing room, or another interesting function. • Remove televisions or video game consoles from bedrooms to depersonalize and create a serene setting. DINING ROOM • Let buyers entertain the idea of entertaining. Set out some chic place settings around the table, or a few wine glasses and a decanter on the buffet. • Strike a balance between overly formal and too casual with an attractive runner and a few fun, decorative elements — think small floral vases or short candle holders.

27

BATHROOM • It’s de-grime time: Scrub and sanitize the walls, floor, shower door — virtually every surface that comes in contact with steam. • Spend extra time scrubbing that tile grout and re-caulk around the tub if necessary. • If your bathroom tile is dated, try paint instead of replacing it. Start with a high-adhesion primer and either epoxy or latex paint. • Remove clutter from the countertop, tub, and top of toilet. Clean surfaces until they gleam. • Pack up and hide all your personal products — from medicine to razors. • Create a luxury spa look with a fancy soap dispenser, fluffy white towels, decorative baskets, candles, plants, a white shower curtain, and a new bath mat. • Fix leaky or running toilets and replace toilet seats. • Remove hard water stains on faucets and shower heads. (Try vinegar!) • Take a daring sniff of the drains. Odorous? Clean them out, and deodorize with baking soda, boiling water, or vinegar. • Time for a new sink anyway? Try a pedestal sink to optimize precious bathroom space. WALLS, WINDOWS & MORE • Have a dark corner or hallway? Brighten it up with a decorative mirror. • Neutralize the walls. If any rooms are painted in dark colors, repaint white or beige. • Paint adjacent rooms the same color to make the whole space feel larger. • Fill nicks and holes in walls, and touch up with paint. • Sorry, wood paneling. It’s time. Paint over paneling with a neutral color. To really cover your tracks, use wood filler between panels and paint over the entire thing. • Make sure every switch plate and outlet cover matches and looks brand new. • Wash the windows, inside and out. Repair any holes or tears in screens. • Replace those family portraits with interesting art placed strategically throughout the house. Avoid leaving dead space on walls. THROUGHOUT

THE

HOUSE

• Declutter! Consider it pre-packing for your move. Box up books, clothes, and personal items and place them (neatly!) in the garage or — better yet — a rented storage unit. • Don’t forget to include memorabilia in those decluttering bins. Family photos, diplomas, and the kids’ artwork should all go. • Keep closets, basements, and attics as empty as possible to maximize the appearance of storage space. • Transform underused areas of the house — the alcove under the stairs or the end of a hallway — into functional spots. Add a desk to create a mini office, or a chair and small bookshelf for a reading nook. • Swap dim lights for high-wattage bulbs. • Check every door, drawer, and cabinet to ensure they open and close easily. Swap out any faulty — or dingy — hardware. • Damaged or aging hardwood floors? Replace damaged boards with new wood, sand down the entire floor, and re-stain. • Do a deep (deep, deep) clean. Hire a professional cleaning service to clean your home from top to bottom — including carpets — before viewings. EXTERIOR • Hang attractive house numbers that are legible from the road. • Brighten up your porch with fresh paint or stain. • Add a fresh coat of paint to the front door, preferably red, black, blue, or wood stain, so long as it complements the trim and doesn’t blend, says The Real Estate Staging Association. Steer clear of unconventional colors like purple. • Buy a new doormat to welcome home buyers. • Power-wash the house exterior, walkway, steps, driveway, and porch until everything sparkles. • Make sure the locks and doorbell function. • Make that mailbox look clean and welcoming, or get a new one. • Plant lots of colorful blooms in attractive pots and planter beds. • Trim back trees and shrubs from the approach to the front door. • Whip that yard into shape with fresh sod or new seed • Store yard equipment and children’s toys out of sight. • Repair shaky banisters.

28

• Get a hammock (or bocce ball game or raised fire pit) to show off how fun your yard can be. • Dress up any imperfect planting area with mulch. • Make sure entryway lights function and are free of cobwebs and insects. • Hide trash cans, recycle bins, and garden hoses. • Don’t forget your outdoor living space. Stage your patio like a second living room, with fashionable furniture, accent pillows, an outdoor rug, and other patio-friendly decor. FOR PET OWNERS • Scrub those pet stains on the carpets and rugs until totally gone or replace them if necessary. Try cleaning formulas made especially for pet odors. • Pet odors soak into your best friend’s favorite things. Completely remove pet beds (or Fido’s most-loved couch), blankets, toys, play structures, food bowls, and the like. • Use air fresheners that eliminate odors, rather than simply mask them. There’s nothing worse than the smell of artificial pine with kitty litter undertones. • Repair or remove any furniture that’s been scratched or gnawed on. • Clean all pet “presents” from the yard. • Keep cat boxes immaculate and hidden away, or — better yet — see how your feline-loving friends feel about a temporary houseguest and remove litter boxes altogether. • Remove any dog or cat doors. Pets? What pets? • When you leave the house for a viewing, take all the furry (or feathery or scaly) residents along with you. • Make a pet hair sweep the last thing you do before you leave the house. DAY OF SHOWING • Add a seasonal touch. Simmer cinnamon sticks in the fall and set out fresh cut lilacs in the spring. •Tidy like you’ve never tidied before. • Avoid cooking any food for your own meals, but do bake some cookies or other baked goods to leave a welcoming aroma behind. • Take off. After all that staging work, you deserve a trip to the spa while potential home buyers are busy falling in love with your house.
