5 ‘Gotta-Dos’ In April for a Worry-Free Summer Battle bugs before they bite (or sting!) you — and check the attic for problems. Tackling five simple tasks now gives you a head start on spring. That leaves you plenty of worry-free time to enjoy the warmer weather. #1 TELL INSECTS TO BUG OFF Early spring warmth awakens insects, so start to protect your home now. Seal openings in eaves, decks, and other structures to keep out carpenter bees. Nix mosquitoes by eliminating standing water or treating it with larvicide. Call a pro to destroy wasp and yellow jacket nests, unless you’re experienced enough to engage in a bee battle. #2 PREP TOOLS FOR LAWN CARE Ladies and gentlemen, start your mowers. April’s the month to get this vital piece of equipment ready to roll. An unmaintained machine can cost money, slow you down, and leave your lawn vulnerable to disease. So, before you pull the starter rope: • Replace spark plugs and the air filter. • Change the oil and sharpen blades. • Fill the tank with fresh gasoline. While you’ve got your gloves on, clean, sharpen, and repair your garden tools. When your azaleas are ready to prune, you’re not going to want to keep them waiting. #3 TUNE UP THE AIR CONDITIONER With flip-flop weather comes another summer tradition: cranking up the air conditioning. Tune your AC in April, before the mercury and service rates rise. Ask your HVAC company if they have a twice-a-year maintenance plan. Often, you can get discounted rates if you join, and you don’t have to worry about finding someone to do it each spring and fall. Now you only have to worry about which pair of Havaianas to wear. #4 CHECK THE ATTIC (AND GARAGE) How long has it been since you looked in the attic? Yeah, us too. April’s the time to inspect this oft-ignored space — before it gets too hot. Look for signs of animal activity (raccoons love attics), and repair or replace damaged insulation or wiring. Ensure stored items are still secure; tighten container lids and dust covers and replace moth repellants. While we’re talking storage, how’s the garage? If soccer balls, bikes, and luggage have taken prime parking space, regain control with a storage system. Your car (and your partner) will thank you. #5 CLEAN UP BIRD FEEDERS Besides spreading diseases to birds, dirty bird feeders attract rodents and hurt curb appeal. Gross. Give your bird feeders a deep clean — not just a rinse-out. Empty them, take them apart, and wash with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts hot water. Rinse well to remove all traces of bleach, air dry, and refill with seed. Clean under feeders, too, because moldy or spoiled seed on the ground can make pets sick. Don’t forget the bird bath. More dinners out, pet care, dumpster fees... these are just a few things that get forgotten BY Jamie Wiebe Surprises happen. Shelling out cash on unexpected renovation costs isn’t completely avoidable — but there are plenty of hidden renovation costs you can prepare for.
Expect to spend about $400 on your trash-mobile, but contractors can provide localized, ballpark dumpster estimates.
Here are some of the surprising things that can set your wallet on fire during your next big project.
Once it’s in your driveway, save some extra cash by using the dumpster to ditch unwanted stuff accumulating around your house. Tired of those nasty old blinds? Say adieu, without paying extra disposal fees. Just leave room for the construction junk.
#1 Extra Muscle: $500
#5 HOTEL STAYS: $500
Even if you’re just clearing out the renovation space by moving boxes downstairs, you still might find yourself in need of a few strong hands.
You’re determined to live at home during the reno, but if a contractor accidentally smashes through your bedroom wall or the noise gets too unbearable, you might find yourself packing up for a short stay in a nearby hotel.
“For the longest time, we thought we could clear out the space ourselves,” says Summer Sterling, who renovated her home’s entire top floor, including gutting the kitchen, updating two bathrooms, and vaulting a ceiling. She and her husband lived in the basement during the remodel. “Then we realized we have this gigantic furniture.”
You don’t need to book your staycation beforehand, but budgeting enough cash for a few days’ away will make the decision to abandon ship a bit less stressful. Or hole up with some friends — just make sure to bring wine and cover dinner as payment.
The Sterlings moved as much as they could beforehand, but the movers still cost about $500.
#6 Childcare: $175 Per Week
#2 ANXIOUS PUPS: $125 PER WEEK Some pets have nerves of steel. Others cower at any unexpected noise or strangers. And construction zones are full of noisy strangers: dropping wrenches, hammering, or stomping through your home in metal-toed boots. Monitor your dog to see how he handles the stress. If the answer is “not well,” prepare for a brief boarding — although you might find a mid-day dog walker or a short stay with Nana is soothing enough (and far less expensive).
Checking your calendar, you realize demo day coincides with school inservice. You can’t have the adorable little rascals stomping through the dust — so off to the sitters they go. Great. Another $100 down the drain. Keep a close eye on the calendar and pre-arrange playdates for their days off to keep your wallet in check. Or bring over Aunt Margie to keep the kids corralled (and entertained) in a spare bedroom. #7 LABOR COSTS: $50 PER HOUR
Sterling and her husband adopted a new dog shortly before the remodel. “It was tough on our little guy,” she says. “He likes to sleep all the time.”
Delays, schedule changes, and unexpected surprises don’t just add time to the renovation — they mean paying more to the workers.
Their two pups doubled their time in doggie daycare — stressful for the dogs and the budget. But planning your work during your sitter’s down season can save you some cash.
“Our labor costs wound up being much higher,” says Janet Heller, whose sink broke during a bathroom renovation — requiring multiple trips and two times the work from contractors and laborers.
#3 DINNERS OUT: $80 PER WEEK Cooking without a kitchen challenges the best chefs — there’s a reason it’s a stalwart Top Chef challenge. Even if your kitchen remains intact during the reno, putting together a meal in a home filled with dust is no fun at all.
Know each contractor’s hourly cost so when disaster strikes, you can budget appropriately. #8 PROFESSIONAL CLEANING: $150
Sterling and her husband ate out or ordered take-out “at least three or four times a week,” she says.
Your new kitchen features sparkling, brand-new marble and stunning oak cabinetry — but you can’t ignore the fine layer of sawdust covering everything.
Instead of single-handedly funding your favorite restaurant’s expansion, she recommends storing pre-prepped, microwaveable meals in a chest freezer. Or setting up a makeshift kitchen.
“Construction dust is everywhere,” Sterling says. Allocate a few days for a top-to-bottom clean. Scrubbing everything yourself can save you some much-needed cash.
#4 DUMPSTER FEES: $400
But if the mess is too daunting, consider hiring a service as a post-renovation treat. Even if they’re just handling the hardto-reach spots, a little help will be more than welcome. Now all you have to do is go home, kick back, and heat up your very last frozen dinner.
Construction junk has to go somewhere. If you’re DIYing the remodel, dumpster fees might come as a surprise.
#9 OFFICE SPACE: $195 PER MONTH

HOME finder.org Feature Telecommuters have their own renovation challenges. How can you take a phone call with clients when a drill is whirring overhead? “I work from home, but am unable to function with so much construction noise above me,” Sterling says. “There’s no privacy whatsoever.” But privacy doesn’t come cheap: A “flexible desk” at a co-working space can cost $195 per month — and more if you need a closed door. Sterling leased a temporary office twice per week during the renovation and lowered costs by working out of coffee shops or a library as often as possible. #10 HIGHER UTILITY BILLS: 15%-20% EXTRA Doors opening. Fans whirring. So many power tools. Is there anything in construction that doesn’t suck up energy? “We’re living in a much smaller space, but the efficiency is terrible,” says Sterling, who spent about 15% to 20% more on electricity during the renovation. “The bloody contractors leave the windows open all the time.” Don’t feel bad if you’re a bit of a nag. Unless the breeze is necessary (drying paint and new hardwood floors require ventilation), pop upstairs every evening to close the windows. #11 LAWN LANDSCAPING: $1,500
Kentucky bluegrass? For some reason, renovating the interior can mean your lawn takes a beating that only a professional landscaper can repair. Ask contractors beforehand if they plan on using your yard for staging, and place down tarps to protect the foliage. Or find alternative spots, like the attached garage or gravel driveway. #12 PERMITS: $1,000 Before the first sledgehammer swings, sit down with your contractor (or city building department) for a detailed discussion of exactly what permits you need. “Usually a contractor will include plans and permits,” says Charles Rinek, owner of custom home building company Rinek, Inc. But make sure you know early on if they don’t, otherwise you’re in for a surprise. Why Saltwater Pools Are So Much Better Than Traditional Pools Safe, low-odor saltwater pools are gaining in popularity. Could you have saltwater in your future? If you hate the stink and sting of chlorine, you’ll love saltwater pools.
Once primarily a perk in health spas and resorts, saltwater pools have now become popular among U.S. homeowners. Today, about 30% of all U.S. in-ground pools are saltwater. “They’ve literally exploded in popularity in the last decade,” says Erika Taylor of “Pool and Spa News.” “It really does make a difference in the way the water feels on your skin. Nothing feels as good as jumping into a saltwater pool.” HOW SALTWATER POOLS WORK Freshwater pools depend on store-bought chlorine to disinfect water and keep it free of algae, bacteria, and other healthharming organisms. Saltwater pools rely on an electrolytic chlorine generator (ECG). The generator separates the salt in the pool water into its two primary elements, one of which is chlorine. The chlorine is then circulated into the pool to sanitize and disinfect the water. The big advantage is that the process doesn’t produce chloramines, an irritating byproduct of the store-bought chlorine traditionally used to disinfect pools. It’s the chloramines that give swimming pools that “chlorine smell” and sting eyes. HOW SALTY ARE SALTWATER POOLS? Saltwater pools aren’t salty like the ocean, says Ray Denkewicz of Hayward Pool Products, a manufacturer of salt chlorination machines. Seawater has concentrations of salt of about 35,000 parts per million (ppm). Saltwater pools have much lower salt concentrations of 3,000 to 5,000 ppm — about the saltiness of a teardrop. Pool saltwater closely resembles the water that naturally bathes eyes and therefore, doesn’t irritate them. SALTWATER POOL BENEFITS Debbi Welch, who owned freshwater pools for 20 years, switched to saltwater nine years ago and says she’ll never switch back. “It’s unbelievable how much easier it is to manage a saltwater pool,” says Welch. Low maintenance: Add a few hundred pounds of salt when you open the pool for the season, swish it around to dissolve, then turn on the generator and let it do its thing. No measuring, testing, or continuously dumping more commercial chlorine into the water — although you may have to add more salt during the season. Welch dumped 500 pounds of salt into her 36,000 gallon pool outside Knoxville, Tenn., in late April, then added another 40 pounds in July. Low annual costs: A salt chlorination generator makes chlorine at about $1 per pound, while off-the-shelf pool chlorine sells for $2 to $4 per pound. Welch says she used to spend about $800 per year to chlorinate her freshwater pool, but only $150 per year to chlorinate her saltwater pool. Constant chlorine levels: ECGs automatically keep chlorine levels constant, which eliminates frequent testing for chlorine levels, and the need to buy, transport, and add chlorine. Feels great: Swimmers in saltwater pools say the water feels silky and doesn’t sting eyes or discolor hair like the water in freshwater pools can. SALTWATER POOL DRAWBACKS Saltwater pools aren’t perfect, or perfect for every pool owner. High startup costs: The top expense is the ECG, which ranges from $600 to $1,200, plus another $150 for installation. Cell replacement costs: Salt cells inside the ECG should be replaced periodically: sooner (4 to 5 years) if you use your pool year-round; later (maybe 10 years) if your pool season is only a few months a year. A cell costs $200 to $600. Salt corrodes: Saltwater can corrode anything in or around your pool that contains metal, like lights, heaters, screws, diving board attachments, and patio furniture. Salt stains: Saltwater splashing on soft stone on pool coping and decks can leave stains and pockmarks. Apply a sealant to solve this problem.
