11 Surprising Reasons You’ll Love Fencing That’s Barely There So, turns out the right kind of fence can actually make your yard feel bigger. We’ll just come out and say it: Privacy fencing can come off as a little rude. Oh sure, there are occasions for it — to block out traffic or corral an Olympic jumper of a dog. But for most yards in most neighborhoods, we’re all about a more neighborly boundary. We call it the anti-privacy fence. It comes in many forms — like glass, cable, and aluminum — that you can see through, but each one does the job of a legit fence without turning your home into a compound. Here’s why we love it. #1 IT LETS THE BREEZES BLOW A solid privacy fence not only blocks neighbors’ wandering eyes, but also air flow. That’s something to consider, especially if your house or garage creates a barrier on other sides. A refreshing breeze helps dry damp areas — discouraging mold and plant-killing fungus growth — and keeps seating areas from feeling hot as Hades in the summer. #2 IT FEELS BETTER Without borders blocking out the world, you can see what’s going on in your neighborhood and feel more connected to your setting, Whyte says. Your backyard will feel more “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and less “Shawshank Redemption.” #3 IT ACTS LIKE AN OPEN DOOR Anti-privacy fencing is the landscaping equivalent of sitting on your front porch in the evening. It “establishes a non-verbal communication that ‘We can share,’” fostering a sense of community, says Brian Whyte, a design/build landscape contractor. #4 IT MAKES YOUR PROPERTY FEEL WAY MORE EXPANSIVE “I call it borrowed landscape,” Whyte says. You don’t have to own it to appreciate it. Open fence styles, like those made of clear acrylic sheeting, provide an unencumbered view of hills, trees, or even just adjoining neighbors’ grassy yards, so you can bathe in that wide-open feeling even if you have a postage-stamp-size lot. #5 IT CAN DOUBLE AS A VERTICAL GARDEN Nearly invisible styles like deer fencing, or simply wires with a trellis system, practically beg for climbing plants to weave through, beautifying your yard and boosting your curb appeal. #6 IT ADDS ARTISTIC INTEREST Fencing that could pass for artwork? Yes, please! Corten steel, used to make shipping containers, is the new “it” material for fencing. When blades of it are installed about 8 inches apart, “you can get a vertical fence that you can see right through,” Whyte says. And like window blinds, they provide a different view depending on your angle. #7 IT MIGHT DETER CRIME Like outdoor security lighting, open or low fencing helps us see what’s going on out there. So while it may sound counterintuitive, low fencing eliminates hiding spots for intruders and allows your neighbors to provide an additional set of watchful eyes. #8 IT CAN COMPLEMENT YOUR ARCHITECTURE Fencing that accentuates your home’s style — like sleek steel and cable for a contemporary home or ornate iron for a Victorian — creates a coordinated look abound to boost your curb appeal. Privacy fencing tends to come in fewer options, style-wise, and who could tell what your house looks like behind that behemoth anyway? #9 IT CAN BE LOW MAINTENANCE Unlike wood privacy fencing that needs to be washed and sealed every few years, styles like ornamental aluminum are maintenance-free. #10 IT LETS THE SUN SHINE IN Depending on the time of year, tall privacy fencing can keep a substantial amount of sunlight from reaching your yard, says Gita Nandan, an architect who is involved in community landscaping projects. Fence styles with smaller boards, spaced farther apart, allow a lot more light in — which is essential if you’re trying to grow a garden, Whyte says. #11 IT ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY Once you start considering anti-privacy fencing, a world of possibility opens up. You can construct a fence with wood slats at the bottom, leaving the top open for tall grasses to poke through a cable rail. Or play with the direction of corrugated metal sheets for an artsy feel. The options are as boundless as the horizon. Which you’ll be able to see without a ginormous fence to block your view. AMY HOWELL HIRT has written about home design for 13 years. Her work has been published by outlets including “The Home Depot,” “USA Today,” and Yahoo! Homes. Swimming Pools: Alternatives to Chlorine Chlorine keeps swimming pools safe and clean, but there are alternatives to chlorine if you’re willing to pay the price. Chlorine is popular because it handles the three main jobs in keeping a swimming pool clean: It sanitizes (kills bacteria and germs), oxidizes (controls organic debris from perspiration and body oils), and deters algae. The chemical is unpopular because it has a strong odor, reddens eyes, and causes allergic reactions in some swimmers. There are alternatives to chlorine including bromine, ionizers, and ozonators, though with each you’ll still need to use some chlorine. A fourth alternative is PHMB, which doesn’t require the use of any chlorine. All four have drawbacks, including cost. Chlorine is relatively cheap. How much chlorine you’ll need depends on the size of your pool, length of the swim season, amount of use, and other factors. For a 20,000-gallon pool that’s open year-round, figure you’ll spend about $600 annually. BROMINE What it is: Pool suppliers sometimes suggest bromine as a substitute for chlorine. It can be an acceptable alternative for those with allergic reactions to chlorine, although that’s not guaranteed since bromine is also in the same halogen chemical family. Aquatic specialist Alison Osinski believes 5% of the population has an allergy to chlorine. How it works: Bromine does a fine job as a sanitizer, but it doesn’t oxidize as well as chlorine. Most homeowners rely on a hybrid version known as BCDMH tablets that are typically 66% bromine and 27% chlorine to tackle that job. Some people opt for a two-step process of combining bromine salt extracted from seawater with potassium peroxymonosulfate (a.k.a. oxygen shock) in the pool to create that same sanitizing/oxidizing power. Pros/Cons: Bromine remains stable at high temperatures, which is why many technicians recommend it for spas more than swimming pools. It’s less irritating on mucus membranes than its chlorine cousin, although it still produces an odor. And if you use just bromine in the pool (not the BCDMH compound), it leaves the water a dull green color that foams up when you swim in it, because the oxidation process is weaker. IONIZERS What it is: Ionizers rely on two dissimilar metals—often copper (an algaecide) and silver (a sanitizer)—sent charged into the water as the sanitizer. The oxidizer is missing, so you’ll need a small amount of chlorine or bromine in the water to handle this cleaning aspect. How it works: An ionizer is a device that uses a low-voltage DC current to send these two metals into the water. The positive charge attracts bacteria, germs, and algae, and the new, larger compounds they form are carried out in the filtration system. Pros/Cons: Like bromine, an ionizer doesn’t irritate swimmers’ eyes and noses. It can substantially reduce the amount of chlorine required. Chlorine and an ionizer work together better than chlorine alone, says Osinski. Yet, she still considers ionizers a poor choice. For starters, you only reduce the chlorine amount significantly if just a few people use the pool on a regular basis, there are few plants and landscaping in the area, and your air isn’t heavily polluted. High dirt levels are beyond what an ionizer can fight on the sanitation side. Also, ionizers depend on moving water, so you must run the pool pump continuously to keep the sanitizing action in place. And the increased levels of metal in the water can stain the pool and turn swimmers’ hair and fingernail beds green. Cost: About $300 for an ionizer that handles up to 40,000 gallons of water. Homeowners may need to replace the metals in the system as often as once a swimming season, at an average cost of $129. Also factor in the energy cost of running the pool pump around the clock. OZONATORS What it is: An ozonator is a machine that attaches to the filtration plumbing line. It inserts ozone gas (an active form of oxygen) into the pool to react with impurities in the water. How it works: There are two types of ozone generators: ultraviolet light and corona discharge. In a UV light system, special low-pressure vapor lamps installed on the water return line create ozone to kill pathogens as they float by. Corona discharge generators rely on an electrical arc to create ozone inside the generator. Again, this ozone kills pathogens in the filtration system. Pros/Cons: Ozone generators can reduce chlorine usage up to 90%, and they use the same amount of electricity as a 60-watt light bulb when the filter pump is turned on, so the added energy demand is tiny. Aquatic consultants say ozonators combined with chlorine are extremely effective as long as you circulate the water 24/7. One caveat: Ozonators run best on dry air, so if you live in a humid climate, expect performance to decline. Cost: A typical ozone generator starts at $600 to handle 7,000 gallons of water; $1,200 to cover 25,000 gallons. Take into account the expense of the pool pump running continuously. PHMB What it is: There’s only one way to eliminate the use of chlorine completely: Switch your pool to the chemical compound PHMB, short for polyhexamethylene biguanide. Homeowners commonly know PHMB by the Baquacil and SoftSwim brand names. How it works: PHMB disinfects by penetrating bacteria cell walls, causing them to burst from within. It then wraps those particles in a heavy gel, which sinks to the bottom of the pool, where the vacuum system sucks it up. Pros/Cons: PHMB doesn’t oxidize, so you’ll need to use hydrogen peroxide for this. You’ll also need to use a separate algaecide and clean pool filters—yes, even the sand ones—every four to six weeks. PHMB is kinder on swimmers’ skin and hair, easy on vinyl pool liners, and doesn’t require as much attention as other chemicals to keep in balance. However, because PHMB is incompatible with chlorine, you’ll need to first drain the pool. Once you’re back up and running, make sure every bathing suit has been washed. Even traces of chlorine in suit fibers will react with PHMB. The result of the reaction: a yellowish vapor that’ll radiate from your bathing suit. Cost: The cost for PHMB chemicals to maintain a 10,000-gallon pool for a 16-week summer season is about $725. JULIE STURGEON has written about residential pools for nearly a decade. Her family was clueless when they bought a home with an in-ground pool, but they have avoided making a major mistake with it yet. How Much Does Professional Mold Removal Cost? Not all mold experts are equal. We explain how to find reputable mold remediation experts and inspectors. When you find mold growing in your home, sound the alarm and get rid of it fast. Delay can mean extensive and costly remediation and repairs. On average, professional mold remediation costs $500 to $6,000 — but the price can soar into the tens of thousands if the problem is severe. Here’s what you need to know about hiring professional mold inspectors and remediation companies. HIRE A MOLD INSPECTOR FIRST If you find mold growing on drywall, trim, or unfinished wood surfaces, and especially if the affected area is more than 10 square feet, hire a mold investigator to discover the root and extent of the problem. They’ll also be able to direct you to a reliable mold remediation company. Reputable companies work with third-party inspectors instead of doing the inspection themselves. But be sure to check credentials when hiring an inspector. The mold industry is largely unregulated, but there are guidelines to help you know when you’re hiring a true professional: • Qualified inspectors should have an undergraduate (at least) degree in a science or engineering field and have completed indus try-approved coursework in mold investigation, preferably from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or the American Council for Accredited Certification (formerly the American Indoor Air Quality Council). • They should bear respected industry credentials, such as CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) or CIEC (Council-certified Indoor Environmental Consultant). • They should work independently of a mold remediation company (reputable remediation companies hire a third-party inspector) and shouldn’t sell mold-related products. • They should provide a customized report that includes lab results of air or surface samples taken. • They shouldn’t hype one species of mold as more dangerous than another. • They should tell you whether a mold problem has a DIY solution, or whether you must hire a professional mold remediation

expert.

Expect to spend $200 to $600 for a site visit from a qualified inspector, which will take 2 to 5 hours. The inspector will take air samples and may open up walls to find mold. INS AND OUTS OF AIR SAMPLING Analyzing air samples isn’t cheap and, depending on the lab used, can cost $30 to $150 for each sample. Some inspectors roll sampling into their base price; others don’t. So make sure you ask. Not every mold issue requires sampling. If you can see mold, sampling is necessary only if you must identify the actual mold species for medical or legal reasons. However, if you think mold is present but can’t actually see it, samples can confirm your suspicions. Also, sampling typically is used after cleanup to verify success. Ask inspectors to explain why they’re taking samples and what hypothesis they’re trying to confirm. If the cleanup is simple enough to perform yourself, a mold inspector can advise you on procedures, protective equipment, and tools. The inspector should also be able to pinpoint the moisture issue that led to the mold problem so that you can correct it. Warning: Don’t even think about diagnosing your mold problems with a home testing kit. They don’t work. They’ll probably reveal some mold, but only because spores are always flying through the air. These kits can’t: • Guarantee a statistically significant sample of air. • Confirm the presence of dead mold spores (which also cause health problems). • Determine baseline levels of mold in your home in order to compare results with other non-mold-infected areas. What A Mold Remediation Professional Will Do Mold remediation companies will clean up your mold in a few days if just some washing and removing carpet is involved, or in a few weeks if demolition and rebuilding is required. Generally, the cleanup process entails: • Removing water-damaged, mold-infested materials. • Cleaning and disinfecting walls, carpet, and personal items. • Removing drywall and studs if mold damage is extensive. • Vacuuming with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filtration. If mold infestation is severe and you are mold-sensitive, you may have to live elsewhere during cleanup. Remediation costs vary depending on how much and where mold exists. Figure on: • $500 to $4,000 to remove mold from crawlspaces only. • $2,000 to $6,000 to remove mold from ducts, crawl spaces, walls, and attics. • $10,000 to $30,000 (or more) to repair widespread structural damage. “Mold remediation isn’t about ‘kill, kill, kill,’” says Wane A. Baker, a Wisconsin mold investigator. “Even dead mold can still be allergenic.” Does Insurance Cover Mold Remediation? Don’t presume your homeowners insurance will pay to fix your mold problems. Insurance typically pays if the problem results from an emergency already covered on your policy, like a burst pipe, but not if mold resulted from deferred maintenance, persistent moisture or seepage, or from floodwaters (unless you have flood insurance). Check with your insurance agent to see if your particular mold problem is covered. Stay Away From Rubber Mulch and Bradford Pears. The house. The yard. It’s all a part of the American dream, right? But after a few seasons with raking, mowing, fertilizing, watering, weeding, pruning, and more, having a yard can feel more like an endless fever dream. Having a yard doesn’t have to suck up every a moment of your life. The trick is picking plants and landscaping materials that don’t need tons of help from you to look good. Here’s what to plant so you can reclaim some time.

that tolerates neglect. It’s also called a Japanese cedar. It’s tall, tapering, and elegant. FLOWERS Perennials are the lazy gardener’s friend. Plant them once, and they’ll come back year after year. • Coneflowers: They bloom all season and come in a rainbow of colors, but the varieties with purple or white blooms are the sturdiest. An added bonus: They’re great for bouquets. Cut them and bring them inside. Fresh flowers from your own yard! What’s not to love?

GRASS For being everywhere, grass is a lot of work. “It’s high maintenance,” says Abra Lee, a University of Georgia extension agent. “It needs a lot of mowing, fertilizer, and water. It’s prone to disease.”

• Black-Eyed Susans: These yellow flowers look like the ones kids draw. They bloom from last frost to first frost and they can take almost all the heat, drought, and neglect you and Mother Nature can dish out. Also, they will plant themselves, dropping lots of seed so you’ll get new plants each spring.

Even so, it’s kind of a must for most yards. To make your grass maintenance life easier, go with as small a patch of grass as you can get away with, and plant these types: Grass for Northern Climates

• Russian Sage: Don’t fertilize it or water it too much, and it will reward you with a mound of silvery foliage and spires of violet-blue flowers that last all summer.

• Fescue: It’s disease resistant and slow growing, so it needs less mowing and fertilizing than other types. You can also grow it quickly from seed, cheaper than buying sod. TREES Grass for Southern Climates • Bermuda: It grows in poor soils and can withstand kids and dogs romping on it nonstop. It’s nearly impossible to kill — good if you’ve no interest in caring for a prima donna lawn.

First, buy the largest young tree you can afford, because a tiny switch of sapling might not become a big tree until you’re eligible for AARP. Second, don’t plant a Bradford pear. Ever. They crack and fall too easily. Instead, plant these: • Oaks: They’re strong and can live for a century or more. They can take a long time to become majestic giants, so if you’re looking for shade, prepare to be patient. Pin oaks and sawtooth oaks get big the fastest; they can grow as much as two feet a year.

BUSHES Pick bushes you don’t need to prune constantly. The time you spend trimming boxwoods into tidy little balls is part of your life you’ll never get back.

• Crepe Myrtles: They make flowers in the summer and their leaves turn in the fall, so you get two seasons of color. Best of all, they grow very fast, going from sapling to mature tree in five years.

• Azaleas: They look best when you let them grow into natural, unpruned drifts. There are more than 10,000 named varieties, so there’s an azalea for your yard and climate. They can live for a century so you may die before they do. If you live in colder climate, go with rhododendrons, azaleas’ larger, tougher cousins.

• Tulip Poplar: They grow to a regal 90 feet tall, and make tons of shade. You’ll get tulip-shaped flowers from it in late spring, and bright yellow leaves in the fall. They’re disease resistant and strong enough to withstand winds that would take down other trees.

• Emerald Green Arborvitae: It’s a fast-growing evergreen that can stand up to heat and humidity. It’s a good choice for a hedge. They’re tidy, Christmas-tree shaped plants you’ll never need to prune.

• Cherry: They’re little — 20 to 35 feet tall — so they won’t overpower a small yard, and they make white or pink flowers in the spring. Stick with the non-fruiting types because they’re easier to grow and less messy.

• Hydrangeas: They’re fast growing and covered with fab blooms from spring till fall. Prune a hydrangea and it will not make flowers, which defeats the purpose of having them. There are hundreds of varieties so you’ll find one that will thrive in your area.

• Eastern Redbud: This is a small, hardy tree that grows fast, and has spring flowers and fall foliage. Birds eat their berries, so ou’ll make new feathered friends

• Cryptomeria: This one’s a fast-growing evergreen

once a year because it decays into the earth. Wait, you say, can’t I use some of that awesome rubber mulch that will still be there when my kids are in college? Yes, you can. But rubber mulch does a poor job of stopping weeds and will not feed your soil, so you’ll need to fertilize your plants and pull weeds regularly. Also, research has shown rubber mulch contains chemicals that can leach into the soil and eventually kill plants. Note: Rubber mulch is great for areas where you just want to cover the ground, not grow plants.

Plant some instead of grass in places where there’s not much foot traffic. They’ll smother weeds, and they grow just fine with no help from you. • Ornamental Grass: It makes fountains of wispy, slender foliage in reds, greens, golds. Varieties that are short and grow in clumps — like blue fescue, mondo grass, and liriope — are the best choice. And yes, there is grass in the name, but, no, you will not have to mow it. MINDSET • Golden Moneywort: This creeping vine grows fast, and once established, looks like a carpet made of tiny green-gold leaves. It keeps its color through the winter unless you live in Fargo. • Ajuga: Another creeper (the plant type, not the human type who lurks at malls), this 2-inch tall plant has shiny, dark green leaves and, in the spring, blue flowers. It carpets the ground and will even grow in shade.

OK, it’s not a landscaping material, but how you feel about your yard makes a big difference in how you feel about caring for it. Here’s the right approach: It’s your dang yard, so pick the plants and landscaping materials you’ll enjoy spending time with.

MULCH

“The reason we have a yard is so we can get joy in reconnecting with nature and lose the stress of our everyday lives,” says Patrick Beasley, a landscape architect. “Plant things that make you happy, and taking care of them will be a part of your life you enjoy.”

Mulch is your friend. Put it around your plants, and it will put the smackdown on weeds, you won’t have to water as often, and it’ll enrich the soil when it decays into the earth. Enriched soil means healthy plants. Healthy plants don’t get sick and die.

Tips on Pool Fence Safety to Reduce Your Liability There’s nothin’ more inviting on a hot summer day than a cool dip. And that can lead to trouble if your pool lacks a child-proof fence. Installing a fence around your swimming pool is a smart security measure that prevents kids from having unsupervised access. In many areas, the law and your insurance company may also require it. But how do you know what kind of fence to pick? Here’s where things get tricky. THERE ARE NO STANDARD REQUIREMENTS The U.S. does not have a federal pool fence law. Instead, pool barriers are regulated at the state and local level. Wait, it gets more complicated. There are exemptions built into these laws. For example, families with children over 6 years old don’t have to install a pool fence in Arizona — unless you live in Scottsdale, Glendale, and several other areas. See what I mean? It’s confusing. Then you have to consider that although your pool might be exempt from fencing laws, your insurance company might require it. So, what to choose? FOLLOW THESE RECOMMENDATIONS TO BE SAFE Here’s a list of features every pool fence should have, based on legal requirements across the states and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: Height: Some areas require a 4-ft. fence; the CPSC recommendation is 4 ft. or taller. Structure: Must be impossible for children to climb. Type: Permanent fencing is ideal because of durability. Gate: All states require that they open outward away from the pool area, and be self-closing and self-latching. Materials: Structures can be made from a wide range of stuff including wood, vinyl, and aluminum. However, make sure the material you pick is not easily susceptible to damage. THE 3 MOST POPULAR TYPES OF FENCES 1. Removable mesh pool fencing: Many consumers like this option because it’s an easy-to-move transparent barrier. But when it comes to safety, don’t skimp. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals has set a standard for fences like these that is recognized worldwide. Here in the U.S., it has the approval of the American Society for Testing and Materials. So if you go with a mesh barrier, make sure it meets or exceeds the ASTM requirements. In many areas this is also mandatory by law. 2. Vertical bar fencing: Structures can be made from a wide range of stuff including wood, vinyl, aluminum, and wrought iron. However, make sure the material you pick is not easily susceptible to damage. In most states, the space between the vertical bars can’t be more than 4 inches wide. 3. Glass panel fencing: Barriers like these are very popular in California. They are durable and safe because they’re made from tempered glass. Plus, since they’re transparent, they don’t detract from your pool’s beauty. ADD ADDITIONAL PROTECTION Keep in mind: Many states, such as New York and California, require layers of protection in addition to fencing. Examples of additional layers of security include: • Automatic rigid pool covers • An underwater motion swimming pool alarm • Rescue equipment But who do you contact in your area to get the skinny on swimming pool safety? Since every state and county sets up their agencies differently, try contacting the following departments in your area: • Building Code Department • Department of Health • Licensing and Regulatory Affairs How did we find stuff? We Googled “swimming pool safety” along with the name of our county and state. To see a wide range of security features and measures to make your pool as safe and liability-proof as possible, check out this video by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, in conjunction with the CPSC.
