Holiday Fire Safety Tips
The holiday season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for household fires, so take note of these tips to reduce your risk. Residential fires during the holiday season are more frequent, more costly, and more deadly than at any other time of the year. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) reports more than double the number of open-flame fires on Christmas Day than on an average day, and about twice as many on New Year’s Day. And when those fires occur, they do more damage: Property loss during a holiday fire is 34% greater than in an average fire, and the number of fatalities per thousand fires is nearly 70% higher. When the source of the fire is a highly flammable Christmas tree, the toll in property and lives is even greater. To keep your household from becoming a holiday fire statistic, here are some safety tips to follow. COOKING Cooking is the top cause of holiday fires, according to the USFA. The most common culprit is food that’s left unattended. It’s easy to get distracted; take a pot holder with you when you leave the kitchen as a reminder that you have something on the stove. Make sure to keep a kitchen fire extinguisher that’s rated for all types of fires, and check that smoke detectors are working. If you’re planning to deep-fry your holiday turkey, do it outside, on a flat, level surface at least 10 feet from the house. CANDLES The incidence of candle fires is four times higher during December than during other months. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas/Christmas Eve and New Year’s/New Year’s Eve. (The fifth is Halloween.) To reduce the danger, maintain about a foot of space between the candle and anything that can burn. Set candles on sturdy bases or cover with hurricane globes. Never leave flames unattended. Before bed, walk through each room to make sure candles are blown out. For atmosphere without worry, consider flameless LED candles. CHRISTMAS TREES It takes less than 30 seconds for a dry tree to engulf a room in flames, according to the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Standards and Technology. “They make turpentine out of pine trees,” notes Tom Olshanski, spokesman for the USFA. “A Christmas tree is almost explosive when it goes.” To minimize risk, buy a fresh tree with intact needles, get a fresh cut on the trunk, and water it every day. A well-watered tree is almost impossible to ignite. Keep the tree away from heat sources, such as a fireplace or radiator, and out of traffic patterns. If you’re using live garlands and other greenery, keep them at least three feet away from heating sources. No matter how well the tree is watered, it will start to dry out after about four weeks, Olshanski says, so take it down after the holidays. Artificial trees don’t pose much of a fire hazard; just make sure yours is flame-retardant. DECORATIVE LIGHTS Inspect light strings, and throw out any with frayed or cracked wires or broken sockets. When decorating, don’t run more than three strings of lights end to end. “Stacking the plugs is much safer when you’re using a large quantity of lights,” explains Brian L. Vogt, director of education for holiday lighting firm Christmas Décor. Extension cords should be in good condition and UL-rated for indoor or outdoor use. Check outdoor receptacles to make sure the ground fault interrupters don’t trip. If they trip repeatedly, Vogt says, that’s a sign that they need to be replaced. When hanging lights outside, avoid using nails or staples, which can damage the wiring and increase the risk of a fire. Instead, use UL-rated clips or hangers. And take lights down within 90 days, says John Drengenberg, director of consumer safety for Underwriters Laboratories. “If you leave them up all year round, squirrels chew on them and they get damaged by weather.” KIDS PLAYING WITH MATCHES The number of blazes — and, tragically, the number of deaths — caused by children playing with fire goes up significantly during the holidays. From January through March, 13% of fire deaths are the result of children playing with fire, the USFA reports; in December, that percentage doubles. So keep matches and lighters out of kids’ reach. “We tend to underestimate the power of these tools,” says Meri-K Appy, president of the nonprofit Home Safety Council. “A match or lighter could be more deadly than a loaded gun in the hands of a small child.” FIREPLACES Soot can harden on chimney walls as flammable creosote, so before the fireplace season begins, have your chimney inspected to see if it needs cleaning. Screen the fireplace to prevent embers from popping out onto the floor or carpet, and never use flammable liquids to start a fire in the fireplace. Only burn seasoned wood — no wrapping paper. When cleaning out the fireplace, put embers in a metal container and set them outside to cool for 24 hours before disposal.

A Killer Strategy For a Tidy Home When You’re Time Squished Here’s a surprisingly functional way to achieve a forever-organized home. You don’t need tons of time to achieve the uncluttered, tidy home of your dreams. You just need a strategy to get there — a really simple one that fits into your life without sucking up hours you can’t spare. What’s pleasantly surprising about having a strategy is that it can turn daily mundane (and often aggravating) moments into opportunities for organization. Having a strategy is about making every moment count. Everyday moments like … When you're waiting for a pot of eggs to boil . . . Take those moments of downtime in the kitchen to do a little organizing. Do you really need that melon baller or — heaven forbid — the banana slicer gag gift you received in last year’s Secret Santa exchange? Jamie Novak, a professional organizer and author of “Keep This Toss That,” says tackling organization incrementally is the way to go. “Seriously small tasks can make a big difference,” she says, keeping you from having to tackle larger, more daunting jobs later. When you grab that plastic container with no lid (for the umpteenth time) . . . Admit it: That $*(#ing lid is never, ever coming back. Instead of tossing that lid-less tub back into your quagmire of plastic parts, permanently banish it, then vow to continue removing every lid or bottom with no mate each time you encounter one (that’s the strategy part). Soon you’ll have a nice tidy cabinet full of matched-up pairs — and it will stay that way if you keep the strategy going. When you're brushing your teeth . . . Rummage through the medicine cabinet for prescriptions and medications that have expired. And don’t forget that many cosmetics and toiletries also have use-by dates. As for that $20 lipstick you bought that made you look like Cruella de Vil but is still hanging around? Either toss it or move it to the box of stuff where you keep your Halloween costumes. When you're breaking down yet another Amazon box . . . Don’t do it. Instead, use it as a donation box. As you encounter things you need to toss that are donate-able during your other organizing and decluttering moments, just put them in the box instead. Amazon is working with Give Back Box to allow consumers to use their boxes to donate and ship (for free!) unwanted clothing and household goods to charity. When your laundry is clean, but there's that one lone sock . . . Toss it. If not in this laundry round, the next one if its mate never arrives. Thank it for its service, and then say goodbye. Same goes for falling-apart-but-matching socks, holey underwear, torn shirts, etc. When you're waiting for your hair to soak up conditioner . . . Thin the herd of shampoos, body wash, and other products that you used maybe once or twice — 6 months ago! — that are still hogging space in your shower. (Bonus: This will also help keep nasty, yucky mold at bay.) When you're watching your sports team play on TV . . . Sort through that ginormous stack of junk mail, catalogs, and circulars. Bring a recycling bin with you to the sofa and go through it during commercials or lulls in the game. Toss anything that’s outdated or unnecessary into the recycling bin.
14
When you're leaving your house to run errands . . . Ask yourself, “What can I take to the car/trash/donate bin/library/give back to a friend?” Professional organizer Laura Bostrom who runs Everyday Order says that also extends to rooms inside the house. “Always carry something with you thabelongs in another room.” When you're putting fresh sheets on the bed . . . Grab a set of sheets from the far reaches of your closet and ask yourself why you’re not putting those on your bed today. Be honest. If the answer is something that won’t ever change — it’s scratchy or worn or you just hate those stupid flowers — then donate or toss. When you're deciding what to wear . . . Switch out hangers on the clothes you choose to wear. Toss the old hangers, and put new ones (we recommend the thin, felt ones because they take up less room and clothes don’t fall off easily) on the rod to use when the clothes you’re wearing are ready to be hung back up. After a few months, donate everything that’s still on old hangers (and not seasonal must-haves). When you wake up tomorrow . . . Remain tuned to other moments that may offer you a chance to finally rid yourself of an organizational mess that’s been bugging you for some time. It’s a strategy, not a to-do list, that’ll make for perpetually well-organized spaces that will make your home even more enjoyable. These water-saving products make every drop count. Some can even trim your electric bill. By DEIRDRE SULLIVAN Even if you live in an area where water is plentiful, drought can still strike thanks to climate change. In some parts of the country, water conservation is the law, and you can get serious fines — or even have your water service terminated — if you use too much H2O. To help keep your water usage low (and trim your utility bills in the process), we rounded up seven of the latest water-sipping products that make conserving a no-brainer.
by their local utility. Controllers with Wi-Fi connections go one step further by automatically adjusting watering schedules based on current weather conditions. Product pick: The Skydrop Sprinkler Controller. Connected to the Internet, the Skydrop creates a custom watering schedule for your lawn based on up-to-date, hyper-local weather data. The manufacturer says homeowners can save up to 75,000 gallons of water per year, based on a 15,000-square-foot yard that’s watered four days per week, 12 months per year.
1. A MAXIMUM-PERFORMANCE TOILET
Tip: Avoid watering your lawn on windy days when the water blows away.
Here’s the deal: Your home’s biggest indoor water hog is the toilet. Approximately 30% of a household’s yearly indoor water use is flushed down the loo.
3. A SHOWER HEAD WITH REAL POWER
Toilets that were manufactured before 1992 can use up to 6 gallons per flush (gpf), but a commode that’s earned the WaterSense label uses a mere 1.28 gpf. Installing one could reduce the amount of water used for flushing by up to 60%. Product pick: The Stealth Dual Flush by Niagara. Dual-flush toilets are high-efficiency commodes that save water by providing a separate flush for solid and liquid wastes. The Stealth uses less than a gallon for solids and a mere half-gallon for liquid waste — almost double the efficiency required by WaterSense. You’ll save nearly 20,000 gallons of H2O and trim yearly water costs by $165. Tip: Your toilet is wasting water if its flapper doesn’t close properly. To fix, replace the flapper. 2. A SPRINKLER CONTROLLER THAT THINKS FOR YOU Here’s the deal: Up to 50% of our outdoor water use is squandered by overwatering. An irrigation controller helps stop pouring this precious resource down the drain. The EPA suggests homeowners use an automated, programmable controller set to a watering schedule based on information provided
Here’s the deal: We love hot showers so much that they account for 12% of our indoor water use. While most standard shower heads provide 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm), low-flow shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label use 2.0 gpm or less. Making the switch could save your household around 3,000 gallons of water per year while reducing demand on your home’s hot water heater. However, low-flows have a problem. They provide users with wimpy showers, according to Consumer Reports. They also plug up easily because the little nozzle holes where the water sprays out are up to 40% smaller than standard shower head nozzles. Product pick: The High Sierra Showerhead is a 1.5 gpm low-flow solution that uses a patented single nozzle to create a powerful shower. Users say it rinses soapy long hair just like a 2.5 gpm shower head. A shower head that uses 2.0 gpm can save homeowners $70 on water costs and up to 370 kilowatt hours of electricity per year (enough to power a house for 13 days!) The High Sierra raises the ante, claiming to save about 25% more on water and electricity annually. Tip: You can save up to 150 gallons of water each
22
HOME finder.org Feature month by shortening your shower by one to two minutes. 4. THE SHOWER OF THE FUTURE Here’s the deal: Shower systems that recycle greywater can slash the amount of H2O and even electricity wasted while taking a hot shower. Product pick: Instead of allowing water to go down the drain, the OrbSys Shower uses a closed-loop, recirculating system to capture and recycle used shower water. The shower’s filtration system purifies the water, making it cleaner than when it was first piped in. Afterwards, the water is pumped back up to the shower head as needed. Because the capture and cleaning process keeps the heated water from cooling, the manufacturer claims it can save up to 80% of the electricity used to heat a standard shower. Not yet available for purchase Tip: A leaky shower head that drips 30 times per minute can waste up to 2.5 gallons of water per day. 5. AN ULTRA-EFFICIENT WASHING MACHINE Here’s the deal: Clothes washers can suck up to 15% of a home’s total indoor water use. Since the average household knocks out 300 loads of laundry each year, a non-certified standard machine can consume over 9,000 gallons of water annually. Product pick: The Kenmore 417.4112 is the top choice on the Energy Star Most Efficient 2014 qualified product list for clothes washers. This front-load washer uses 43% less water and 63% less power than non-certified machines. That means it’ll reduce your annual water use to about 5,000 gallons per year, while using less electricity. Energy Star says the Kenmore 417.4112 also has the lowest annual ($74 to $79) and lowest lifetime ($814 to $866) operating costs for electric and water. Retail price: $899 Tip: You can find leaks by monitoring your water bill. Just keep your eyes peeled for spikes in water use. 6. THE WASHING MACHINE OF THE FUTURE
Here’s the deal: Washing one load of dirty clothing can guzzle up to 23 gallons of water. If your machine is more than 10 years old, it can consume up to 40 gallons per load. Product pick: The Xeros washing machine uses up to 80% less water. How? It employs over 1 million tiny nylon polymer beads to scrub clothes clean. The beads absorb stains off dirty clothing using humidity, lower heating temperatures, and half the amount of detergent used by standard washers. Even better, the beads can be reused hundreds of times. Retail price: Industrial washers are currently in use; Xeros hopes to release a competitively priced consumer version in two years. Tip: Using cold water to clean your dark laundry helps retain fabric color while saving water and electricity. 7. A POWERFUL OUTDOOR WASHEr Here’s the deal: A traditional pressure washer or hose with sprayer uses up to 18 gallons of water per minute. The puddles they leave behind can create urban-runoff that contributes to flooding and water pollution. Also, when done incorrectly, power-washing can cause property damage. Product pick: The Watermiser Waterbroom is a powerful cleaning machine that uses a combination of water and air to clean pavers, epoxy floors, driveways, patios, and pool decks, using as little as 2 gallons of water per minute. Because the Waterbroom doesn’t contribute to urban-runoff, it’s compliant with all state storm water waste laws and EPA regulations. Retail price: Starts at $299 Tip: Fertilizers can increase the amount of water your landscape consumes so use the minimum amount needed. 7 Home Hacks That Make Maintenance Easier These tricks make tackling prickly household chores easier.
No one ever said maintenance had to be fun. But can’t it be just a little bit easier? Here are seven home hacks to take a bit of the drudgery out of your honey-do list: #1 Tuck Chalk in Your Toolbox to Stop Rust You can keep the metal tools and hardware in your toolbox rust-free with blackboard chalk. How so? Chalk is a moisturesucking material that traps dampness. When you place several pieces throughout your toolbox, its porous nature will protect items prone to rusting. Bonus tip: Got a musty closet? Fill up a small muslin or cheesecloth bag with chalk and then hang it inside. It will absorb the dampness and stinky odor. #2 Spray Your Mower’s Blades to Keep Clippings From Sticking If you have a lawn, mowing is one of those must-do drudgeries. Fortunately, cooking spray can make the chore problemfree. When applied to a mower’s undercarriage and blades, it can help prevent grass clippings from sticking. Bonus tip: You can prevent ice from building up in your freezer with cooking spray. Just spray a thick layer over spots prone to icing, and let it sit for five minutes. Afterward, use a towel to wipe up the oil. #3 Toss in a Tennis Ball to Clean Your Pool Water Suntan lotions, moisturizers, and body oils will leave a greasy slick on pool water. To clean, toss in a fresh tennis ball. Its fuzzy surface will soak up the oils your guests left behind. Bonus tip: A tennis ball will buff scuff marks off floors. To avoid stooping while cleaning, cut an X into the ball and place on the end of a mop or broom handle. #4 Use Painter’s Tape for a Perfect Caulk Job To many DIYers (myself included), applying caulk in clean, straight lines seems like an impossible task. But it’s actually very easy if you use painter’s tape. You’ll need to thoroughly clean the area you’re caulking first. When it’s dry, apply medium adhesion painter’s tape, such as Frog Tape, above and below the area you’ll be caulking and then caulk. Be sure to peel off the tape while the caulk is still wet. #5 Grab a Makeup Sponge to Repair Drywall Holes Typically mesh or paper tape is used to fill small holes in drywall. But a cosmetic sponge will get the job done, too. Just stuff it into the hole (you may need to cut it down to size) and spackle. You’ll find the entire tutorial here. Bonus tip: A little baking soda added to a dollop of strong, fast-acting glue, such as Krazy Glue, will fix a small wall crack. When the mixture is dry, it forms a hard plastic that can easily be sanded down to a smooth surface. #6 Use Your Drill to Clean a Grimy Tub It takes a lot of elbow grease to deep clean a dirty bathtub — unless you use a cordless drill with a foam ball polishing attachment (found in the automotive section of most big box stores). Attachments like these were designed to be tough on grime without scratching surfaces. Bonus tip: Another automotive store item that saves cleaning time is rain repellent windshield sealant. Apply it to clean glass shower doors to reduce soap scum buildup. #7 Apply Nail Polish to Fill a Hole in Your Window Found a tiny hole in your glass window? Repair it with clear nail polish. Apply a coat then wait for it dry. Repeat those steps until the layers of clear nail polish are flush with the glass surface. Bonus tip: Clear nail polish can also fix torn window screens. You’ll need to apply multiple layers until you create a substantial barrier. DEIRDRE SULLIVAN is an NYC-based writer who’s obsessed with maximizing every inch of her urban dwelling. Super-Busy People Reveal Their Habits for a Tranquil Home Three young entrepreneurs give tips on staying organized and calm while living hectic lives. Life is crazy. Cah-ray-zee. And while you wouldn’t have it any other way from 9 to 5 (OK, more like 8 to 7), the insanity should stop at your front door. That’s why you bought your home, right? To have a place to rest, recharge, and come up with your next trailblazing idea. A few inspirational ideas for your home may be all you need to put it on the path to tranquility. Three super-busy entrepreneurs — a brewery owner, website founder, and organic farmer — know exactly how important a tranquil home is to achieving personal success. Here, they share how they created Zen-like havens in their homes to foster stress-relieving routines. A Nook to Bliss Out In When hanging out at the local brewpub loses its appeal because, well, brewing is your business, home becomes your place for a mini getaway. Tim Bullock, who co-owns St. Elmo Brewing Company in Austin, Texas, and his wife, photographer Heather Gallagher, created a perfect spot to chill in their own home with a little wallpaper and a daybed. In the morning before his young son wakes up, Bullock often lounges on the daybed, reading the news, sending a few emails, or just listening to piano music before the madness of the day ensues. The brightly colored tropical wallpaper mural covers an entire wall next to the daybed. Compared to the crisp black-and-white color scheme in the rest of the house, the vibrant space “really feels like a vacation room,” Bullock says. Your blissful nook doesn’t have to be indoors: HypeGirls.com founder Nichole Dawkins created a tropical escape on her balcony. More than 20 strategically placed potted plants — including aloe, vegetables, herbs, small palm trees, cacti, and orchids — block out the neighbors and frame a calming water view from her Miami home. Given the space’s appeal, Dawkins doesn’t have to remind herself to take a break throughout the day. She meditates there every morning, soaks in the sun while enjoying an afternoon cup of tea, and often reads or colors while her son naps. Sign us up! A No-Fail System for Organization With a young toddler running around, Dawkins is constantly battling toys that threaten to take over her living room. So the creative director and founder of the site for “millennial mamas,” invested in DIY shelving and deep decorative bins. Because every bin houses one category of items — like puzzles, coloring books, games, and toys — she can easily clean up throughout the day, allowing her more time to enjoy that sense of adult orderliness every evening. Instead of a mess facing her at the end of the work day, “I spend much more time relaxing in the space than I do cleaning it up,” she says. A Drop Zone to Separate Work From Home Is it difficult to leave the literal “mess” of work at the front door? Andrea Davis-Cetina, an organic farmer and owner of Quarter Acre Farm in Sonoma, Calif., can relate. A one-woman operation, she might spend the day planting and harvesting, and then return home after dark to post social media updates, order seeds, or book guests for her radio show. She needed a place to stow her dirty farm boots and jackets, but her home doesn’t have a foyer. So she carved out a small foyer drop zone at the front door, with a wall-mounted coat rack above a simple, three-level shoe stand. “It stops the mess at the door,” she says, and helps draw that elusive line between work and personal life — even if there’s more work to be done after a long shower and an episode of “Scandal.” For homeowners with devices instead of dirty gear: A charging station is a must-have for a drop zone. Plug ‘em in, and leave ‘em there. An Easy Way to Spend Time Outside Bullock says both his home’s location and his home’s yard help him de-stress simply by encouraging him to get outside. Since his home is in a walkable neighborhood, Bullock says that encourages both him and his family to interact with nature, instead of watching it through car windows — either by walking to the local pizzeria or riding their bikes through the park. Their home’s locale makes it all possible. But his favorite just might be the small herb garden in his front yard. He and his son routinely spend a few minutes most days watering or weeding it. “That definitely is a big stress relief, and it’s right outside the front door,” he says. Windows will get you a dose of nature, too: Dawkins says the abundance of windows in her home is a natural mood-booster — and a significant reason she chose her home. She leaves the windows uncovered during the day to get as much of the benefits of daylighting as she possibly can. A Focal Point to Find Peace and Motivation “The power of visualization is very important when you’re trying to get focused, or relax,” Dawkins says, by way of explanation for the “inspiration board” in her home. She gives her board a very personal touch. Every year, she takes a blank canvas and paints it with a new theme (this year, it’s reggae), then adds her visions and dreams to it. It works as artwork in her home, but it also helps her to see her goals clearly — and let go of the day’s less consequential stressors. You don’t have to be an artist to have an inspiration board: Davis-Cetina uses a simple bulletin board to hang her motivational messages and personal and professional mementos. In the evening, when she’s handling the office end of farm work from an extra bedroom, she likes to visit her board. “I like to hold onto things and look at them. It’s a reminder of why you’re doing what you’re doing,” she says.

10 Simple Comforts Every Houseguest Will Adore You For Never underestimate the power of an extra iPhone charger. You’re expecting houseguests. Fun! You want them to feel welcome, comfortable, and — dare we say it? — maybe even a tad envious of your hosting prowess. No need to moonlight at hospitality school. We asked Airbnb hosts with tons of great reviews on their cozy bungalows and light-filled island condos for some quick, easy (and cheap!) ideas to turn your guest quarters into a vacation haven. Be careful, though – your guests may not want to leave! #1 STOCK UP ON EXTRA CHARGERS AND CORDS A dead phone equals getaway misery. Airbnb host Valarie D’Elia sets out a bowl with power strips and cords, outlet converters, and even an iHome speaker. Nothing sets the stage for feeling at home IRL like feeling at home digitally. And that includes posting your Wi-Fi name and password in the guest room so they don’t have to bug you. #2 OFFER SAMPLE-SIZE TOILETRIES IN YOUR BATHROOM Put your stockpile of Sephora samples and hotel toiletries to good use. Tiny shampoos and lotions arranged in a basket or vintage apothecary jar are as welcoming as they are practical. Guests will be relieved if they forgot their own, but even if they didn’t, they’ll love the luxury of washing their hair on the house. #3 RAISE YOUR CLEANLINESS STANDARDS When you miss a dust bunny at home, it’s just your own skin flakes and dried up sneezes in your own corner. To guests, it’s disgusting at best and insulting at worst. So clean it all. Airbnb even tells hosts to scrub the entire bathroom, not once but twice, including the toilet, sink, bath, and floors after every guest. “We make sure you can smell the cleaner,” says Cheryl Trotta, who rents out her vintage bayside cottage in Warwick, R.I. #4 GIVE IT YOUR PERSONAL TOUCH People choose Airbnbs over sterile hotel rooms because, in part, they want an authentic, personal experience. So give it to them! Trotta intentionally markets her rental as a family cottage and scatters pictures and family treasures throughout the cottage. Frame a couple of your childhood photos and hang them up alongside some mementos from your own travels. How else would your guests discover that you were drum major of your high school marching band? #5 PUT A RADIO IN THE BATHROOM Your guests may like to sing along in the shower, but the real reason for putting some tunes in the bath is to provide them with plenty of, well, privacy. Add an essential oil diffuser — or poo-pourri drops — and you’re in business. #6 SET UP A DIY CAFE If your guests are early birds — or will just want some occasional alone time — put a coffeemaker in their room along with a well-stocked basket of coffee and tea. Maybe even blow their minds with a mini fridge full of snacks. To pull this off right, ask how they take their coffee in advance, and stock up appropriately. #7 DESIGNATE DRAWER AND CLOSET SPACE JUST FOR GUESTS If your guest room closet could be featured on Storage Wars, it’s time to rethink your stuff strategy. Consider some serious Marie Kondo-izing — maybe donate your to-be-regifted pile and sell those designer jeans you’ll never fit into again — to make room in the closet and dresser for guest to have plenty of space (and the key word is plenty). Label a few guest drawers and crack the closet so they can see there’s space to hang their clothes. #8 FANCY YOURSELF A TRAVEL AGENT Give guests a local’s-eye view by filling a basket with menus from nearby restaurants, brochures from local businesses that cater to tourists, and a current issue of your community newspaper. It’s a great way for guests to feel like a local and customize their time in your town. #9 HANG A ROBE – OR TWO – IN THE CLOSET Bonding with their host over morning coffee is one of the best parts of staying with friends. But they can miss it completely when they realize they only packed a ratty grandma nightgown or — even worse — NSFW lingerie. Help your guests feel right at home by hanging a couple of cozy (and freshly laundered), one-size-fits-all robes in the guest-room closet. Not only can they wear their pajamas to breakfast without feeling self-conscious, but they’re also super-comfy and great to wrap up in after a shower. #10 Expect the Unexpected with Extra Personal Supplies And let your guests know where they are so they won’t feel guilty for bothering you (or worse, go without!). Here’s a list of things that rockstar Airbnb hosts always keep in stock: • Disposable razors • First-aid kit • Umbrella • Replacement light bulbs Being the perfect host is perfectly achievable. With a little forethought, family. Get ready to be the house everyone vies to visit. w3
• Toothbrushes and toothpaste • Towels, pillows, and extra blankets • Flashlight you’ll start racking up your own stellar reviews from your friends and
