The Recipe: Time: 15 minutes 2 cups water 2 cups sugar 3-4 cinnamon sticks 1 teaspoon whole cloves 1 teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg 4 tablespoons canned pumpkin

Begin by heating the water and the sugar over medium heat in a heavy-bottom saucepan. Stir until sugar is dissolved, then whisk in remaining ingredients.

Turn heat to low and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, continuously stirring. Do not boil.

Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain liquid into a small glass bowl or cup. Pour into storage container — glass bottle, canning jar, plastic container — and store in refrigerator up to three weeks. One serving is about 2 tablespoons, more or less to taste.

Layering is one of the best ways to not only stay warm, but also add some personality to your outfit.

A patterned scarf can instantly add fun to a neutral outfit, while pants in a bright color change up your fall wardrobe. Blush is a huge color for fall this year. Naturally, I have no problem spending money adding more pink to my wardrobe.

Layering is also an essential way to stay warm in offices when the temperature inside is often much colder than the temperature outside. Flowy cardigans worn over shells with capri pants or maxi skirts are a go-to uniform for early fall for me.

Once it starts getting really cold, I layer by adding hats, fingerless gloves and infinity scarves I knit myself. I also have a sizable collection of flannel shirts, quilted vests, oversized sweaters and colorful scarves. I’ve already got big plans for cozy outfits once the temperature begins to drop.

erfect armony Vanessa Edwards shares her philosophies on life through music

F

or more than 10 years, Vanessa Edwards has shared her love for making music with the Columbus community as education director for the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic.

She focuses her efforts on making a difference in the lives of children and young adults.

Edwards firmly believes that music holds the power to significantly impact the lives of young people and to make them well-rounded individuals.

“It (music) gives them another outlet of opportunity to belong to a group,” she explains. “There have been so many studies recently talking about the importance of music in a young child’s life and how test scores are so many percentages higher for children who have a music background or music lessons.”

Edwards, a 53-year-old mother of two, knows firsthand the influence music can have on young people.

The Columbus native grew up with five siblings in a home that was always filled with music. Both her parents played instruments, including piano and harmonica, and she and her four sisters and brother followed in their footsteps.

“We all played piano and guitar,” says Edwards. “There’s always been music. It’s just something that clicked for me.”

At the age of 10, she picked up the violin and fell in love with the instrument.

In 1983, the Columbus North alumna graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in music merchandising. Edwards admits she never dreamed she would end up teaching.

“I was thinking the business side of music,” she says. “I don’t know why I didn’t think education, because that was a more realistic path. Now I can’t picture doing anything else.”

The violinist started playing with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic in the 1980s when it was still known as Columbus Pro Musica. In 1995, she began teaching strings classes for the philharmonic. Two years later, she became the orchestra’s production manager and principal second violin.

Everything just seemed to evolve, says Edwards, when she looks back over her life’s journey.

“I never really thought I was going to do one certain thing with my life,” she says. “It was always whatever God put in my path for me to do, that’s what I’ve done. I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing, and it’s very fulfilling and important to me.”

Since becoming the education director in 2003, Edwards has worked tirelessly with area educators, community leaders and others to expand the philharmonic’s educational programs.

“She is really the one who has grown the education program to the point it is today,” says Margaret Powers, executive director of the philharmonic, of Edwards. “The number of students involved has dramatically increased, particularly over the past five to seven years.”

She possesses the drive and passion all true musicians have, adds Powers.

“They (people like Edwards) truly enjoy what they do and love to share their music with audiences and people who are interested,” Powers says. “They are so focused, organized and just do what needs to be done. It’s just amazing.”

Edwards oversees a range of programming for children, including Jammin’ with the Phil, the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Strings Camp, which is an annual week-long program open to kindergartners through high school seniors.

Strings in the Schools is one of several programs that have experienced exponential growth over the past few

years. The before- and after-school program offers area elementary school students the opportunity to get up close and personal with instruments like the violin, viola, cello and bass. Edwards travels to different schools each day to play for the kids and answer their questions.

“When they find out the bow is made of horse hair, they want to know if the horse is OK,” she says. “Sometimes they will pick out the minutest thing to ask you about and you’re like, ‘I never thought of that.’”

Edwards readily admits she loves her work, and the jobrelated challenges she faces are minimal. If anything, she says, it’s tough finding enough hours in a day to accomplish all she wants to do. The best part of her days is when she gets to meet all the children and see their excitement when they hold an instrument correctly or play something.

David Bowden, music director and conductor for the philharmonic, said one of the greatest gifts Edwards has given to the organization is her ability to make others aware of the importance of music education. He describes Edwards as a treasure to the organization and a “pied piper” for children and teenagers.

“She used her diplomatic persuasion to help the school system, and particularly the principals, understand how valuable the philharmonic’s programs are for everyone in

the community,” says Bowden. “We are now in nearly every single elementary school, thanks to her efforts.”

When Edwards finds free time, she’s either spending it with family or volunteering, often donating her musical talent to play for local events and various church services.

After 33 years of marriage, Edwards said her husband, Greg, is very supportive and still attends her performances whenever possible.

“I do play to relax sometimes,” she says. “There is always something to practice for or I’ll pull out pieces I haven’t done for a while, which is good to stay in shape.”

She says she has the best of both worlds, getting to be near her family and share her love of music with others. “It’s wonderful,” she says. “This is my life, it’s what I do; (I) share my love of the violin and music and encourage other young people to share and enjoy what I have gotten from this.”

Time’s gentle reminders, like occasional pain in her hands, make her wonder how much longer she will be able to play. Edwards says she plans to continue her work with the philharmonic for as long as she can. “They’re probably going to have to kick me out of here,” she jokes.

Her life philosophy is the culmination of everything she does and says if she had the opportunity she wouldn’t change a thing. “Like yourself,” she says. “Be happy with what you’re doing and be happy with your life.” *she

The fourth annual YES Film Festival is set to feature an array of films, including shorts, documentaries and narratives from local and international filmmakers, many of them created by female producers and directors.

Diane Doup, Diane Mason and Carolyn Seltzer are part of making that happen.

“It’s so nice to be able to spotlight women filmmakers who don’t get as much exposure as men,” says Diane Doup, community outreach coordinator for LincolnCentral Neighborhood Family Center and co-director of YESFest.

When YESFest has its yearly call-out for independent filmmakers to submit their work, Doup says it is not surprising for the board to screen more than 100 films. Out of the many submissions, only a handful is chosen to be featured at the festival each year.

According to Diane Mason, artistic director for the festival, the film committee tries to

showcase a 50/50 split of films produced and/ or directed by men and women.

“When women pick up cameras, they tell stories of their own lives,” Mason says.

“They’re life stories, and this is something that seems to have appealed to the YES audiences.”

Many of the documentary film entries by women often involve a problem or challenge, she says, that gets the audience to ask themselves how they can help or get involved.

Film festivals can create an opportunity for independent films to be more accessible to a wider audience. “The films are a labor of love and works of art,” says Mason, “and the festival is about having a shared experience.

You don’t have to be a die-hard film lover to love a film festival.”

“Al Helm: Martin Luther King in Palestine,” a film by Connie Field, is one of the films scheduled for this year’s festival.

Field says she hopes the audience is open to following the film’s story about African American gospel singers who tour the West Bank.

“A lot of Americans don’t really get to see what the reality of life is for those who live in the West Bank,” says Field.

Doup says the festival really tries to appeal to a wide variety of audiences and expose them to films they may not ordinarily get to see on the big screen, like Field’s documentary. “When our committee is soliciting films, they are looking for those that really stir emotions in people and highlight emerging and renowned filmmakers,” Doup says.

Part of the draw for Seltzer is the excitement of the different experiences each film offers. As soon as the festival schedule is released, she makes it a point to plan her itinerary. She tries to work in a good mix of films, including shorts, documentaries and narratives.

“I think if people realized what they were missing, they would see this as another chance to promote the uniqueness of Columbus,” she says. “Although we are a small town, we have the opportunity to partake in

such a varied experience.”

Another appealing aspect of the festival for Seltzer and others includes the Q-and-A sessions with the films’ directors, actors and producers after each viewing. When they aren’t available to be there in person, sessions are held via Skype.

“There’s just something about being that close to the creator of the work that makes you realize the love, art and talent that go into these films,” Seltzer says.

This year brings a change in the festival proceedings that will benefit the filmmakers

who submit their work. YESFest will now offer jury awards with cash prizes for best narrative, best documentary, best short and audience choice awards.

Doup says their audiences are growing year over year, and she hopes eventually they will have a week-long event.

“There’s a reason the blockbuster film stars say they love independent films,” explains Doup. “They’re a raw version of film that offers room for creativity and flexibility.

Sweet Life Artisan baker shares secret recipe for happiness

elissa Ammon, owner of Sogno della Terra, an artisan bakery in downtown Columbus, is more than just a baker. She balances her business with her other passions, as a mother to six, a published writer and an avid gardener.

Seven years ago, Melissa and her husband, JR, relocated their family to Columbus from North Carolina. Originally from Indiana, she decided it was time to head back to her homeland. After choosing Columbus as the ideal place to raise a family and sow some new seeds, she purchased an old equestrian farm in Bartholomew County. Immediately, her trained gardener’s eye scanned the green areas for the hidden garden plot she knew had to be somewhere on the property.

“When we bought the property in Columbus, I could not figure out where the old garden was located,” says Melissa. “Since the place was built in the 1950s, I knew there had to be one here somewhere.”

After researching satellite images, she soon discovered the old plot hidden under layers of debris. It was going to take time to get a new garden space viable.

Melissa taught baking for 20 years and sold bread to restaurants while living in North Carolina.

So in her free time in Columbus, she again took up baking bread. Soon she started bringing her fresh baked goods to the local Columbus farmers market.

Her offerings were a hit.

can olive bread, as well as her other baked items.

The demand was so great she decided it was time to expand business. That’s how Sogno della Terra came to be. Opened in September 2013, the Old World-inspired artisan bakeshop and coffeehouse –– the Italian name means “dream of the earth” –– offers homemade goodness.

Think hearty beef stew. Ratatouille. Asiago pepper pots and goat cheese with pine nuts and roasted onion.

Add to that crusty artisan breads: Prohibition bread (a bacon and cheese medley), Asiago bagels and orange challah, a sweet coriander bread rich with butter.

Customer favorites also include Italian and specialty cakes, along with French press coffee and tea.

The bakery on Washington Street is now a year old and hopping with customers 12 hours a day.

The daily lunch special is posted on Facebook, and sidewalk tables beckon to customers.

Although work takes up a significant amount of her time, Melissa also manages to home-school three of her younger children. Her clan ranges from 13 to 23, with four of her six children — John, Caroline, Kathleen and Hannah — here in Columbus. Twenty-three-year-old Katie is in the Marines in Washington, D.C., and 19-year-old Josiah is in North Carolina working on the family dairy farm.

John, 21, swaps 24-hour shifts with his mom at the bakery. He says he is very aware of her spirit to thrive and make people happy.

“If I had two words to describe my mother,” says John, “it would be inspirational and undeterred.”

Her daughter, Caroline, who is 17, works at the bakery, serving coffee and muffins. She already has lofty plans for her future.

“I love helping out in the bakery — I get free coffee,” she says with a laugh. “It keeps me busy; I get to meet all kinds of people and make new friends that I have things in common with.”

Caroline plans to travel abroad, become an au pair to help with expenses and get acclimated to the cultures overseas. Melissa says she couldn’t be more proud.

It’s not just her kids who see her gifts and talent, but also the community at large. Chamber of Commerce member Tim Cooney says Melissa is an outstanding businesswoman.

“This is the entrepreneurial spirit we need in Columbus,” says Cooney of her offerings to the community. “I like to bring members here (to the bakery). It’s a great place to talk and relax.”

Melissa says plans for the bakery include enlarging the space for more outdoor seating and perhaps adding some live music for entertainment. She wants to be more amenable to accommodate customers during conferences, as well.

The bakery is flourishing under her skilled hand.

“Play it smart, not hard,” says Melissa to other women who want to start their own businesses. “Do your research first, and if you are going to serve the public, make sure you understand and like people.”

This philosophy is evident as she warmly greets customers when they enter her quaint bakery. It’s obvious she enjoys all facets of the business.

“Food is a four-dimensional art,” says Melissa. “I just add a sense of community.” *she

Playing with your food yields spooky snacks

Ordinarily, I don’t advocate playing with your food. But as often happens this time of year, I’ve been inundated with photos in magazines, emails and of course, on the Facebook pages of friends and relatives, showing all the adorable things you can do with food to make it so crafty for holidays.

“Look, you can turn an Oreo into a spider by sticking pretzel sticks in its cream filling!”

Uh huh.

Now, I fancy myself a good cook and a good baker. What I’m not is a good artist or enthusiastic crafter. So when I look at photos where someone carved Mount Rushmore out of a marshmallow, I usually ask myself, “Who thinks up these things?”

This year, however, I decided to embrace the challenge. Maybe I’ve just finally gotten into the spirit of the holidays or maybe, readers, I was just trying to spare you the time and trouble. I decided to road-test a few of these food crafts to see just how fun and easy they really are.

Here are my findings, which are most definitely not scientific.

1. THE ACORN KISS

This one looked easy enough. You take a Hershey’s Kiss, and using frosting as glue, top it with a miniature vanilla wafer, and then glue a chip (either peanut butter or butterscotch) on top to look like a stem.

Once it’s done, it looks like an acorn. Now this is where you all should be saying, “Oh, isn’t that cute. How clever.”

Yes, it is cute and clever. And this one’s not too hard either.

On the difficulty scale, this one was pretty easy, but I do issue this warning: Beware of using frosting as glue, a common thread through many of these crafts. Unlike Elmer’s, white frosting does not dry clear. Overdo it with the glue and your seams will show, and it won’t go away when it dries.

3. THE MARSHMALLOW WITCH

2. THE VEGGIE SKELETON

The idea here is to use cut vegetable sticks to form the shape of a skeleton. Use a bowl of dip for its head.

Can’t picture it? Don’t worry. Just Google “veggie skeleton” and you’ll get hundreds of images. That’s what I did and I just copied the one I thought looked the best.

Now I’m an expert at cutting vegetables, so I’ll rate this one easy-peasy. Using curved red pepper strips for the ribs really gives it a nice skeletal feel.

Bonus challenge: I dare you to make this and not end up humming: “And the knee bone’s connected to the leg bone, dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones.” That song’s still in my head.

Whoever made up this little witch either was drinking or has a self-punishing personality.

First put some coconut in a zipper bag with a few drops of green food coloring. Now toss that around until the coconut is dyed green. That’s step one.

The next 10 steps only get more tedious and frustrating.

Frost a marshmallow with white icing where the hair would be. Then roll the marshmallow in the coconut to attach the hair.

Next, use some frosting to glue miniature chocolate chips onto the face of the marshmallow for the eyes and nose. By the time I got the frosting on the back of one of those tiny chips, it was starting to melt in my fingertips before I was able to attach it.

This is the point where, I believe, the creator of this craft reached for her first gin and tonic. I got out the tweezers. Shouldn’t tweezers be reserved for important jobs like removing splinters and unwanted facial hair?

Still, I soldiered on.

Eyes in place, check.

I set aside the witch to work on her hat.

First take a plain chocolate cookie disk (like Nabisco’s Famous Wafers) and, using some frosting, glue a miniature Reese’s Cup, upside down, on top. Then glue a Hershey’s Kiss to the top of the peanut butter cup, creating the pointy top of the witch’s hat. This sounds easy enough, but rest assured, the cookies break, the icing glue spreads and leaks, and you may find yourself, as I did, consuming hundreds of extra calories in chocolate, because it seemed a shame to waste the ones that didn’t turn out.

When the hat is dry, tint some of the frosting orange, then pipe it around the hat to form a decorative trim and to help secure the candy to the cookie. I admit, I cheated here. I purchased cake decorator frosting already tinted orange to make my trim.

Once the hat is complete, use some frosting to attach the hat to the top of the marshmallow and voila! Your witch is complete.

Unfortunately, my Jet Puffs began to sag under the weight of their hats. They did not stand up like in the picture, having fallen victim to tiny head/giant hat syndrome. I decided that I needed bigger marshmallows, so the next day I repeated the entire process again, this time using giant marshmallows. The process was as excruciatingly tedious as the first time, but in the end, my witches were upstanding.

While the witch got high praise from a crafter friend, I will still file her under “Don’t try this at home.” It’s off the charts on the tedium scale and has way too many steps for something that will probably only appeal to a 5-year-old.

4. THE CHEESE BROOM

String cheese and a pretzel stick: How hard can that be?

Just take a log of string cheese, cut it into three or four pieces, stick a pretzel stick in the end of one piece to form a broom handle then shred the cheese to look like the broom bristles.

Not too difficult, right? Believe it or not, it’s harder than you may think. String cheese works best when you have some length to pull down the strings. I tried peeling off the string cheese from these cubes but ended up having to use a knife to shred them into bristles.

I did, however, tie a nice chive around my cheese bristles to give the broom a more authentic look. Take that, Martha Stewart.

This craft isn’t hard, but you have to ask yourself: Who wants to eat a piece of cheese that I have just had my hands all over for the past 10 minutes? I rate this high on the yuck-factor scale for too much human contact with the food.

5. THE VAMPIRE APPLE

The vampire apple seemed simple enough.

A caramel apple, with a wedge cut out and marshmallows cut to form two front teeth and a pair of fangs.

Of course, I wasn’t taking into consideration that this actually required making caramel apples first, before turning them into a vampire.

And oh, by the way, unwrapping all of those caramels is as tedious as gluing a nose on a marshmallow witch.

Once the apples were dipped and dry, cutting the wedge was easy; just make sure you have a sharp knife. Cutting marshmallows, that’s another story. Make sure you’ve got some confectioner’s sugar or cornstarch on hand, as it is sticky business for sure.

But the real problem came when I tried to get the marshmallows to stick to the cut apple.

I mistakenly thought the caramel would be sticky enough to hold the fangs in place. It was not. Making matters worse, the juice from the cut apple was starting to melt the marshmallows.

Eventually, I did what any good dentist would do and resorted to implants.

I used broken toothpicks to anchor the teeth into place, making these fangs scary for more than one reason. A co-worker who saw my vampire apple made fun of its fangs.

Think they look bad? Just wait until you bite into it. *she

“Over the course of the next 10 weeks, we will explore and discuss experiences and challenges that girls face every day. The program begins with helping girls get a better understanding of who they are as individuals. Next, the girls examine the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships, followed by an exploration of how they can positively connect with and impact the greater community.

“At the end of 10 weeks, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5K event. Completing the 5K provides girls with a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible is possible.” *she
