"Why do you spell 'Almanack' wrong?" Sara Clifford
W
ell, it’s a tradition. “Kin” Hubbard, creator of those cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality. H u b b a r d published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and
sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since. Sara Clifford has been taking a shine to ol' Abe and his cartoon cronies since becoming editor of the Democrat last fall and reading up on local history. To regale her with local lore, offer opinions or hurl complaints, you can find her at the Democrat office on Main Street most hours of the day and most days of the week.

Village Green Building turns 100 Susan Lakin American Folk Art Gallery. Walter and June Miller, Columbus, bought the building in June 1967 from Kirk Bassett, who bought it in June 1960 from its original builders and owners. It’s now owned by Dick and Frank Miller, sons of Walter and June Miller. The tenants now include three Millerowned businesses: Miller’s Ice Cream House, owned by Dick, and The Candy Dish and The Harvest Preserve, both owned by Frank. “We’ve tried to keep the whole building in the tone of what Nashville is all about,” Dick Miller said. “The homemade candy and ice cream and preserves that we make right there Photographer Frank Hohenberger, provided by Charles "Buzz" King

Nashville landmark, the Village Green Building on West Main Street is turning 100 this year. The three-story brick building was built by the Knights of Pitheus and the Nashville Masonic Lodge in 1910. It housed both lodges for decades. Today, the building houses several businesses: Miller’s Ice Cream House, Photo courtesy of Dick Miller The Candy Dish, The Harvest Preserve, Smashing Design, Ferrer Gallery and the The Village Green Building, which has housed a diverse lineup of business in the past 100 years. 20 Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide • Summer 2010

go right along with that, and we’ve had a lot of artists in the building,” he said. After 100 years, the Village Green Building remains among the largest and oldest structures in Nashville. “Putting up a three-story building in Nashville in the early 1900s would have been something very, very unusual to say the least. It’s an amazing building,” Miller said. It has housed numerous businesses throughout the years, including Nashville Hardware and even the Brown County Democrat, which moved into the building along with its first-ever power printing press in the early 1930s. Stories about early life in the building still circulate through Nashville today. “It’s historic in that it was the biggest building in town when it was built and it probably still is,” Nashville Town Councilman Buzz King said. King said his father, Fred King, worked in the building as secretary for the Nashville Masonic Lodge for 38 years. “I remember being in there as a kid in the 1950s and it was a creaky old place then. It’s quite a place. I’m surprised it’s that young,” he said. Nashville resident Howard Voland remembers working in the building as a young man. He opened an insurance office there after returning from duty in World War II in September 1945. Voland’s office was situated between Dale Moberly’s old accounting office and another office run by C. Carey Cloud, the Brown County artist and inventor who designed toys for Cracker Jack. “He had two girls sit there with bushel baskets opening envelopes all day long and pulling out dimes because you could order the [Cracker Jack] toys,” Voland said. “They’re valuable now, if you can find them. I had a bunch, but I let the kids play with them,” he said. After a day at work, Dennis Calvin, who ran the hardware store downstairs with his brother Dirk, would sometimes come up and ask Voland for a car ride to Columbus.
“He’d put two gallons of gas in my Model A out front and we’d go to Columbus and have two beers apiece,” Voland said. “Old Dennis, he always carried his gun on his head under his hat and wore some greasy old overalls he never washed. His wife didn’t like him to drink and he wouldn’t drink in town.” Dick Miller said it’s a lot of maintenance to keep up such an old structure, but aside from some repairs to the mortar between the bricks, the building itself has held up surprisingly well through a century of various uses. “We’ve talked about trying to do something, but have not come up with any specific thing to try and celebrate its birthday,” Miller said. Tom Lotshaw is a reporter for the Brown County Democrat, the county’s only newspaper and publisher of the Brown County Almanack.

Brown County Antique Mall celebrates 15 years

Megan O'Bryan
ifteen years ago, Cheri Clevenger didn’t know anything about antiques. But when the opportunity to get into the business arose, she took it. The former A m e r i t e c h employee and craft shop owner opened the Brown County Antique Mall on April 1, 1995, and has been going ever since. The 6,500square-foot building, on State Road 46 East, houses more than 60 dealers who sell antiques, primitives, art, jewelry and decorator items. “We’ve always been full. I always have a waiting list,” said Clevenger, who also buys and sells antiques herself. “We’ve always been very fortunate that way.” Her tenants come from all over Indiana, including a number of local artists and other Brown County vendors. In the past,
