Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | SUMMER 2012
Well, it’s a tradition. “Kin” Hubbard, creator of those cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality. Hubbard published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since.

Brown County is many things to many people. It’s home. It’s a respite from life in the big city. It’s also a place to get married. Cozy chapels and inns, bed-and-breakfasts, spacious pastures and scenic overlooks dot the area. Wonderful places to visit any time of year, these locations also offer brides- and grooms-to-be a variety of romantic and breathtaking spots to say “I do.”
Photos Provided By Suzanne Kammerer , Nashville Image
Goin’ to the Chapel … or the Gazebo … or the Barn Tradition can be had in Brown County. If you’d like your wedding with a little old-time religion (or simply old-time style), either Nashville Image or the Abbey Inn Chapel can provide it. Through Nashville Image’s Old Tyme Photography Studio and Wedding Chapel, owner, officiant, photographer and wedding planner Suzanne Kammerer says she can “dress you up,” “marry you” and “shoot you,” all for a nominal fee. Couples who choose to get married at Nashville Image (www.nashvilleimage. com) can expect to invest “$100 for the ceremony and $165 to $650 for their portraits,” Kammerer says. Those portraits, which can be shot in sepia-tone, black-andwhite or color, can include old-time wedding attire to create the perfect mood. The Nashville Image wedding chapel can accommodate 12 guests, plus the bride and groom and their attendants. For a larger chapel wedding, ceremonies can be held at the Abbey Inn Chapel (www.browncountyweddings. com) for up to 30 guests or at the Cornerstone Inn (www. cornerstoneinn.com) in downtown Nashville, which offers a large dining/reception hall and a chapel that seats up to 30. A gazebo at the Abbey Inn Chapel is also available, if the weather is on your side, as is the garden at the Cornerstone Inn, and various wedding packages can in-

Indoor weddings at the hotel are limited to no more than 30 guests, and ceremonies are held in the hotel lobby. Hotel staff can help to arrange wedding music, flowers and all manner of wedding-day details, as well as providing your reception catering and cake. Story is a quaint 19th-century village in Brown County that features beautiful gardens, a surrounding forest, fields with grazing horses and plenty of charm. Choose from the porch, which overlooks the patio and holds 40 people; the Old Mill, which holds up to 50; or the barn, which accommodates up to 150 people and is outfitted with a dance floor, 200 amp electrical service and more. Other more intimate rooms are also available. Event catering is provided by the inn, or—for parties of 15 or fewer—your group can simply order from the restaurant menu. The amphitheater in Brown County State Park offers a picturesque panoramic backdrop for your outdoor ceremony. A built-in stage, which can accommodate approximately 100 guests, overlooks surrounding treetops. The park also offers shelters throughout its grounds for receptions, and accommodations can be arranged at Abe Martin Lodge or

Life’s an Adventure Rawhide Ranch (www.rawhideranchusa.com) and eXplore Brown County at Valley Branch Retreat (www. explorebrowncounty.com) are both known for the adventures they offer—with approximately 10 zip line rides available between them. But both locations, perfect for group retreats and family reunions, also provide beautiful spots for embarking on one of life’s biggest adventures: getting married. At Rawhide Ranch, brides and grooms can choose a location among 54 private acres, with woods, streams, ponds and pastures providing nature’s best decoration. Ceremonies can be held indoors or out, under a clear blue sky, in a large party tent or at the ranch’s Buck Inn Banquet Hall,

which can host up to 250 guests. “Most brides choose to hold the ceremony behind the barn in a grassy area that overlooks the horses and beautiful trees,” says Jenny Peddycord, the ranch’s wedding coordinator. In order to have a wedding and/or reception at the ranch, you must rent the entire facility for two nights, Peddycord adds, which makes for a perfect destination wedding for your party. The entire facility sleeps approximately 60, and there are activities that your guests can take part in—from horseback riding to sitting by the campfire—during their stay. Another great location for a destination wedding, eXplore Brown County at Valley Branch Retreat offers plenty of adventure (zip line rides, ATV tours, paintball battles) with your nuptials. If you’d like to brave the weather outside, look into a lakeside ceremony on the property. Otherwise, head into the Harvest Hall, where couples can enjoy all the conveniences of a formal wedding hall. There’s a fireplace, a formal staircase, a stage, a prep kitchen and dressing rooms for the bridal party. Couples can bring in their own catering company, or event coordinators at eXplore Brown County can arrange all the details, owner Gary Bartels says, so you have nothing to worry about except remembering to say “I do.”

extr as By Sherri Cullison The nice thing about having a wedding in Brown County? The beautiful views, sure. The rustic venues, of course. But it’s also nice that everything you need can be found close by. Start your day by getting pampered at Ethereal Day Spa and Salon (812-720-9009), order your flowers from one of two local florists, The Village Florist (812-988-7045) or Michael’s Flowers & Gifts (www.michaelsflowersandantiques.com), and then make a reservation to be delivered to your ceremony in style, via Classic Carriage (765-3462842) or C. Dawn Livery (812-764-4590). Nearly every popular restaurant and hotel offers catering for special events. Grab a bite to eat in Nashville at the Artists Colony Inn (812-9880600) or Muddy Boots Café (812-988-6911), and if you like what you find on the menu, contact the manager about catering your big event. If you choose a special venue for your wed-
ding, you can also see about the culinary services offered with each wedding package. Hotel Nashville has catering services in-house, as does The Story Inn. If the venues don’t offer catering themselves, they all have lists of preferred vendors, whether you need contacts for catering, music, photographers, rentals or if you’re simply hoping to find an officiant to do the deed. If it’s only cake you’re after, both the Abbey Inn and the Apple Blossom Cabin offer cake and punch receptions, and local providers can help, too. Icing on the Cake (812-988-6339) features the creativity and skill of Brown County artist and cake creator Kristina Taylor. And to remember the big day? Contact MonWood Photography (812-988-4486) or Olde Tyme Photography Studio (812-988-8292), which also offers the use of a Brown County wedding chapel.

nother great thing about getting married in Brown County is that you can honeymoon there, too. Spend your days with your beloved browsing the many boutiques and art galleries in Nashville or hiking and mountain biking along the trails in Brown County State Park. Then, in the evening, enjoy a meal at one of the many fine dining establishments before settling in by the fire at your choice of romantic retreats. Brown County has it all: food, entertainment and accommodations, above and beyond the services you’ll need for your big day. The options seem endless if you’re looking for a private place for a romantic week in the woods. Choose from any number of log cabins with hot tubs, fireplaces, complete kitchens and more. Hilltop Cabin and Suites (www.hilltopsuites. com) and Hills O’ Brown Vacation Rentals (www.browncountylogcabins.com)
have various rentals that cater to your specific needs, or reserve an Iris Garden Cottage (812-988-2422) or a private guesthouse at Lake Lemon (www. lakelemonguesthouses.com). Van Buren St. (812-988-8400) or the Olde Magnolia House on Jefferson Street (812-988-2434). • A little farther out, in Story, is the famed Story Inn, said to be Indiana’s oldest country inn. The Ferguson House, at 78 W.
Franklin St., was constructed in 1873 as a boarding house for artists who came to the village to create paintings of the beautiful rolling hills and scenery of the area, and the story goes that Mrs. Ferguson, at that time, would not rent rooms to “women who wore knickers.” Leased since 1999, the historical property is an “iron decor source,” with tabletop dishware, collegiate/NFL gifts and memorabilia, fashion jewelry, comfort gifts, floral décor, garden, accent furniture, wine accessories and huge holiday sections in season.
