Welcome Schneck Overview
Schneck Medical Center is in constant pursuit of ways to provide excellent care. In the last 100 years, we have evolved from a 17-bed hospital to one of the most respected health institutions in the nation with a staff of nearly 900 employees, 125 volunteers, and 200 physicians. Today, Schneck is the only organization in Indiana to be honored with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest presidential honor for quality and performance excellence. Becker’s Hospital Review named it one of the nation’s Top 100 Great Hospitals, and one of the nation’s Top 100 Great Community Hospitals. Schneck was among only four U.S. hospitals recognized for their leadership and innovation in quality improvement and safety at the American Hospital Association Leadership Summit Awards and Recognition Program.
4
Schneck is among only seven percent of hospitals nationwide that have achieved Magnet® status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Schneck’s Cancer Center has been honored by the American College of Surgeons for excellence as the recipient of a commendation from the Commission on Cancer and the Outstanding Achievement Award for cancer care. Its Women’s Imaging Center has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. And, its hip and knee replacement programs have received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for quality and safety. Schneck has been named as one of Indiana’s “Best Places to Work” and recognized nationally as a “Best Place to Work” in healthcare by Becker’s Hospital Review, Modern Healthcare magazine, and HealthExecNews. It has also been ranked as the #1 Most Nurse-Friendly Hospital in the nation by TopRNtoBSN and Best Hospital Finance Department by Healthcare Finance News. The foundation of Schneck’s future is being created today. That is why Schneck is working toward a better tomorrow
by embracing efficient, safe health delivery practices and pioneering to stay ahead of healthcare reform. This means a better healthcare experience for you and your family today and for all of your tomorrows.

Many women only see their doctors when they are sick or injured, forming a negative connotation with doctor’s visits; however, scheduling a yearly well-woman visit with your doctor is imperative in helping prevent and recognize disease, identify health issues, establish wellness goals, and build a relationship with your physician. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
10
recognizes the well-woman visit as a fundamental part of women’s healthcare and wellness. Scheduling an appointment annually when you are not sick gives you time with your physician dedicated to maintaining your overall health by providing services based on your age, risk factors, and individual needs. So don’t wait until you get sick! See your doctor regularly to help prevent illness and disease instead of just treating it.

Heart Attack What is a heart attack? The human heart is a muscle that pumps blood. Blood containing food and oxygen to meet the heart’s own needs comes from the coronary arteries. Fatty deposits, called plaque, made of cholesterol and other substances can build up in the walls of these vessels, a condition called atherosclerosis. Over time such deposits narrow the arteries and reduce or stop blood flow to the heart. This may cause chest pain called angina pectoris. When less blood flows to the heart, the heart muscle may be damaged. If a blood clot forms in a narrowed artery and completely blocks the blood flow, part of the heart may die. Doctors call this a heart attack or a coronary thrombosis, coronary occlusion or myocardial infarction. When a heart attack occurs, the dying part of the heart may trigger electrical activity that causes ventricular fibrillation. This is an uncoordinated twitching of the ventricles that replaces the smooth, measured contractions that pump blood to the body’s organs. Many times if trained medical professionals are immediately available, they can use electrical shock to start the heart beating again. If the heart can be kept beating, and the heart muscle isn’t too damaged, small blood vessels may gradually reroute blood around blocked arteries. This is how the heart compensates; it’s called collateral circulation. The key to surviving a heart attack is to recognize the warning signals, listed at right, and get immediate medical attention. — American Heart Association
12
Blood flows to the heart Blood supply is blocked in coronary artery Heart area is damaged
ABCs of a heart attack
• Angina (chest pain) — back pain or deep aching and throbbing in the left or right bicep or forearm. • Breathlessness — or waking up having difficulty catching one’s breath. • Clammy perspiration. • Dizziness —Unexplained lightheadedness, even blackouts. • Edema — swelling, particularly of the ankles and/or lower legs. • Fluttering (or rapid) heartbeats. • Gastric upset (or nausea). • Heavy fullness — or pressure-like chest pain, radiating to left arm or shoulder.
Take action
If you experience heart attack symptoms, don’t delay. • Call 911. • Sit or lie down. • Chew, crush or swallow an aspirin followed by a drink of water, if possible.
Taking aspirin immediately at the onset of heart attack symptoms may prevent the formation of additional small blood clots blocking blood flow through clogged arteries. If that happens, heart muscle damage may be prevented or delayed, buying time to get to the hospital.
Hearts can heal
A heart attack is like a quick blow to the heart. The heart can be “stunned” by the lack of blood and oxygen. But when the blocked artery can be opened quickly, the damaged muscle gains back more of its normal function. Soon after a heart attack, small arteries near the damaged area begin to expand. They bring in blood to the area around the blocked artery. This may help limit the amount of damage. Within a few weeks or months, damaged heart cells are replaced by scar tissue as the heart heals.
Schneck Foundation For over 100 years, generations of families have depended on Schneck Medical Center to care for their loved ones. The commitment goes back to 1910 when Mary Schneck donated land and funds to open the doors of a 17-bed hospital named Schneck Memorial Hospital. The hospital’s mission was to provide quality health care with compassion for the citizens of the community. Today, a century later, Schneck Medical Center remains true to that original commitment. As the needs of the community grew, so did the hospital—in both size and stature. Services rapidly increased in complexity. The Schneck Foundation has played a key role in fulfilling the needs of Schneck since its inception in 1953 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization —its mission to develop relationships and financial resources in support of Schneck Medical Center. A mission, that with your partnership, the Schneck Foundation is determined to keep. The Schneck Foundation accepts gifts on Schneck’s behalf and works to fund both present and future equipment and program needs. The Foundation manages $2 million in assets. Contributions of any amount are gratefully accepted and may be unrestricted gifts or designated for a specific hospital unit or program. Most contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible, with 100% of each gift benefiting the hospital program or department designated by its donor. Imagine being the Mary Schneck of today and through your gift, you make a profound difference in the lives of your children, your grandchildren, and future generations who will rely on having quality health care readily available to them. Imagine having the opportunity to align your legacy with one that saves countless lives. Your opportunity is now. To discuss the many ways you can provide a tax-deductible charitable contribution please contact: Rexanne Ude Executive Director Schneck Foundation P.O. Schneck Foundation You may know donations have funded the yearly Foundation Allied Health Scholarship program, helped build the Schneck Cancer Center, purchased Schneck’s Emergency Transport Vehicle, supported IUPUC’s Foundation for nursing faculty and purchased new Telemetry Monitors for Schneck. However, what you may not know is that gifts help fund many other programs and projects to ensure quality health care for all we serve. Here is an example of some of the things donations have had an impact on:
• Heliport on Hospital Grounds • Funding Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program through Girls Inc. • STEM Education in High Schools • Health Education in Area Schools • Emergency Department Translation Software • Annual Screening Supplies • State-of-the-art Surgery Suite • Lifeline (Emergency Response) Program • Paramedic Radio in the Emergency Department • Daily Hospital Inpatient Newspapers • Comfort Toys for Pediatric Patients Prior to Surgery • Support and Development for the Community Health Center of Jackson County • 1957 Hospital Expansion

Lung Cancer Screening At Schneck Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US. According to the American Lung Association, survival after five years is only about eighteen percent, due in part to advance stage cancer at time of diagnosis. The survival rate if caught early is fifty-four percent, but only fifteen percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage. Early detection is key to reducing cancer deaths. Schneck Diagnostic Imaging offers a Lung Cancer Screening, a low-dose CT scan of the chest to see if cancer is present. The cost is $99 or FREE based upon your insurance coverage. Private insurance does not typically pay for this screening. Medicare covers this test as a preventive benefit for those considered high risk, so the $99 fee will be waived. No physician order is needed. The CT scan results will be sent to you and your medical provider.
According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, only patients considered “high risk” are eligible for this screening. High risk patients include those who are: • Age 55-74 with at least a 30 pack-year smoking history (one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years) who continue to smoke or who quit less than 15 years ago. • Age 50 or older with at least a 20 pack-year smoking history (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years) and at least one additional risk factor (occupational exposure, residential radon exposure, cancer history, family history of lung cancer, or history of lung disease).
If you are at high risk for lung cancer, please call (812) 522-0433 today to schedule your screening.

It causes your blood glucose levels to shoot way above normal and wreaks havoc with your health. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. Once sugar levels build up in your blood, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and loss of feet or legs.

Same Day Breast Biopsy Imagine finding a lump in your breast. A biopsy will determine if it is cancer or nothing to worry about. A million thoughts are running through your head, but mostly you’re thinking, “Will I be okay?” Waiting for your scheduled biopsy can be unsettling. That’s why Schneck Medical Center offers same-day breast biopsy for better peace of mind for its patients. “What’s remarkable about this service is the psychological impact for patients,” says Dr. LeAnn Stidham, radiologist at Schneck. “Patients can have their diagnostic mammogram and the breast biopsy within a few hours instead of a few days.” Only 20 percent of breast lumps are cancerous, but that does not make the experience of getting a breast biopsy any less overwhelming. Schneck’s imaging staff is uniquely sensitive to each woman’s needs.
24
The Women’s Imaging Center provides results of the diagnostic evaluation within an hour. Biopsy, if needed, may be done on the same day and pathology diagnosis, typically, within 24 hours. Schneck pathologists are onsite providing quick access to expert diagnosticians—a great benefit to patients. For more information about same-day breast biopsy at Schneck, call 812-523-4874. Self-referral Mammography Schneck’s Women’s Imaging Center also offers self-referral mammography. Self-referral mammography means that a patient may schedule her annual screening mammogram without an order from a referring physician. Any woman age 40 and over who has had no breast symptoms or complaints is eligible for self-referral mammography.
Eligible patients can call Schneck’s Centralized Scheduling Department at 812-5220433, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, to schedule their mammogram. About The Women’s Imaging Center at Schneck. The Women’s Imaging Center at Schneck Medical Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. This certification ensures that Schneck has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, equipment, quality-control procedures, and quality-assurance programs. Schneck Women’s Imaging Center provides digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, breast interventional procedures, and computer-aided diagnosis for mammography and MRI.

American Red Cross
Mission, Vision, and Fundamental Principles
Mission Statement The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Vision Statement The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that... ...all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope; ...our communities are ready and prepared for disasters; ...everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products; ...all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and ...in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives. How We Help The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas: Disaster Relief The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United
30
States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes. We work in partnership with other agencies and organizations that provide services to disaster victims. Supporting America’s Military Families The Red Cross helps military members, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service. Emergency communications, training, support to wounded warriors and veterans, and access to community resources help an average of 150,000 military families and veterans annually. Lifesaving Blood Your donations of blood are what make the American Red Cross the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. Each year, nearly 4 million people donate blood through the Red Cross, helping to provide more than 40% of America’s blood supply. Health and Safety Services The Red Cross is the nation’s leading provider of health and safety courses,
such as CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training. Each year, more than 9 million Americans participate in our training programs, including first responders, educators, babysitters, and people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency. International Services The American Red Cross is part of the world’s largest humanitarian network with 13 million volunteers in 187 countries. Working together, we help respond to disasters, build safer communities, and teach the rules of war. Each year, we reach an average of more than 100 million people across the globe. The prostate is a walnut-sized reproductive gland — located right below the bladder, in front of the bowels — that helps produce semen. Old Medicine Remember the Three R’s REVIEW the contents of your medicine cabinet at least once a year. REMOVE expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
Ditch those
Old Medications By Doug Worgul If you’d never open your refrigerator and pop the top on the milk jug — two weeks past its expiration date — and chug it down, then why would you open your medicine cabinet and pop a pill that’s two months — worse yet, two years — past its expiration date? Mary Ross, pharmacy supervisor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, poses that not-so-rhetorical question to make a point: People tend to take the expiration dates on their food products much more seriously than expiration dates on their prescription and over-the-counter drugs. “But, over time, the chemical makeup and potency of medications changes,” Ross said. “Taking outdated
medications may also mean you are taking a pill that is not going to help you. Many medications become ineffective past their expiration date. Heat, cold and moisture can also affect a medication’s potency.” Ross says this is why it’s important to check the contents of your medicine cabinet regularly. Janet Engle agrees. Engle is clinical professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Pharmacy. “It’s important for people to realize that ignoring the expiration and labeling information on their medications or improperly storing medications may pose potentially harmful risks to their health,” she said. “It is important to
RESTOCK with new medicines.
give your medicine cabinet an annual makeover and to make sure your medicines are stored properly and have not expired.” The American Pharmacists Association, or APhA, recommends that consumers avoid keeping certain medications in bathroom or kitchen cabinets. APhA also states that medications should always be stored according to package directions and should be kept in their original packaging. By keeping medications in their original packaging, consumers always have easy access to full dosing instructions, drug interactions, storage instructions and expiration information. — Wire Reports
