Semiannual inspections of SCOV facilities are one of the Properties Committee’s primary functions. The purpose of the inspection is to identify the condition and maintenance needs of SCOV facilities and grounds. Committee members, together with HOA maintenance staff, will conduct an inspection during March. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

If you are like some Tipster Editorial Committee members, you appreciate being able to skim through our community magazine and enjoy the photos. Captions help readers know what the photo is about, and many of us enjoy being able to put a name with a face when it comes to a photo of SCOV residents. If you submit a photo of club members, consider adding a caption with the people’s names and identify where they are in the photo (left to right). If it’s a large group, you don’t need to identify everyone, but we appreciate getting names of groups of four or fewer. If you submit a photo of flowers or wildlife, please include identification information if you have it.

We’re excited this month as the season comes into full bloom. You will see the Bermuda grass start to green up on the golf course. As a reminder, the decision to not overseed was for the long-term health of the golf course. The decision was made considering the advantages and disadvantages of playability. It has provided the opportunity to accomplish many projects with the extra time we wouldn’t normally have. Thank you for understanding how important it is for the golf course. The golf course condition has improved over the last few years, and will continue to improve. Ultimately, the decision not to overseed the golf course will have long-term agronomic benefits.
Golfers and non-golfers alike, Chip & Putt league is back. Join the fun on Thursdays at 4 PM. The entry fee is $15 pp, which includes golf, dinner and prizes.
The Cure for Cancer event is Sunday, March 13. The golf course will be dedicated to the tournament that day. If you have not already donated or registered to participate, please do so. Your support is appreciated. There is also a charity auction site to purchase items to support the University of Arizona Cancer Center: bit.ly/tvgcureauction.
The annual Oro Valley Amateur Championship is March 26-27. The entry fee is $175 and $75 for annual golf members at The Views Golf Club. For more information, contact the Pro Shop or go to the www.theviewsgolfclub.com.

March usually is when the weather begins to warm up in Tucson. That is important this year because it means the Bermuda grass will start to green up on the golf course. It takes weeks for the grass to become a uniform green color in the fairways and roughs, but starting the process to break dormancy will be a welcome sight.
During January, the roughs and fairways were sprayed with herbicides to remove any existing weeds, while also preventing future weeds in the spring and early summer. This was one of the big reasons for not overseeding this year. The Poa Annua that appears every spring in overseeded fairways was also removed as part of this application. Over the next several years, the fairways and approaches will have fewer weeds throughout the overseed season leaving a much cleaner appearance.
The decision has already been made concerning overseeding this fall. The fairways, approaches, driving range tee, short-game area fairway and tee boxes that transitioned well will be overseeded starting September 19. The golf course will reopen on October 10, followed by the usual two weeks of cart-path-only restriction for golf carts to allow the fairways to dry out. The plan moving forward in regard to overseeding will be following the USGA recommendation of not overseeding every 5 to 10 years for the health of the turf. Based on this recommendation, the next time the golf course will not be overseeded is 2030, after eight years of consecutive overseeding.

The 18-Hole Women’s Golf League has a general meeting and luncheon once a month. At these luncheons we recognize the members who have achieved various golfing benchmarks in the previous month. We enjoy these get-togethers, though it has been a little challenging due to Covid.
Each month our social director, Vickie Snook, organizes a lunch for all our members. Vickie has a great team to make sure everything is ready when golfers arrive for lunch after golf. In February, she planned a fun chili cook-off competition.
I want to thank Vickie for all of the work she does for the club each month, as well as the volunteers that prepare the various dishes that are so wonderful.
