Our club provides an opportunity for discussions of challenging ideas. We read selections from the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. The topics and genres vary, but the conversation is always thoughtful and lively.
We’ll start our new season Wednesday, October 5, with Chaucer’s The Pardoner’s Tale. On October 19, the reading will be An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, by philosopher David Hume. It’s fall, and time to get our brain cells working.
Newcomers are welcome. For more information, contact Barbara or Maryfaith.

Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-1966) has been considered the foremost female poet of the Harlem Renaissance, mostly due to her mentoring of younger writers. Her poetry is in the public domain and the following example may seem old-fashioned in form, but the tone, language and emotional impact of “Lost Illusions” display both her talent and her despair. As a widow for roughly 40 years, she accepted jobs in other than her chosen fields (writing, teaching) to support herself.
“Oh, for the veils of my far away youth, / Shielding my heart from the blaze of the truth, Why did I stray from their shelter and grow / Into the sadness that follows—to know!
“Impotent atom with desolate gaze / Threading the tumult of hazardous ways—Oh, for the veils, for the veils of my youth / Veils that hung low o’er the blaze of the truth!”
While pain and sadness are nearly inescapable as we age, poetry can put them in perspective. SCOV Technology Club Pres. Leo Belardinelli 520-989-9314 Technology Club help desk 520-989-9314 scovtech@gmail.com www.scovcomputer.com
Welcome to tomorrow from the SCOV tech nerds. Have you ever woken up in the morning and wished the coffee could start brewing while you were still sleeping? Chances are you got out of bed, turned on the coffee and waited impatiently until its brewed. Have you ever laid in bed at night and wondered if the garage door was closed? If so, you had to go and check before the javelina or rattlesnakes found it open.
Our world is filled with those little annoyances that touch our lives. If you are interested in finding out a new approach to these inconveniences, maybe you should try home automation. It’s not as difficult as you may think. There are a myriad of solutions in today’s technical environment, like Alexa and Google Home. If we piqued your interest, try one of our Smart Home classes which can be found on the SCOV Technology Club web page class schedule. See Workshops and Classes on page 12.

At higher elevations, the fall season is marked by the changing of the aspen leaves. In SCOV, the fall season is marked by the return of the seasonal residents (those of us that escape the heat of summer). Returning residents and their dogs can look forward to seeing all of the improvements to the K-9 Korral that the club completed over the summer and seeing all of our two and four legged friends that we missed.

October is membership renewal month. You will receive information on your membership for 2022-2023 and an invitation to our kick-off dinner on Monday, November 14. This will be a catered event with a western BBQ theme. We hope to see you there. The Prepare and Share Dinner Club provides a social evening of member-prepared cooking and eating on a monthly basis from December through March. Monthly dinner themes are selected by a vote of the membership, and the theme carries through all courses. This is a great way to get to know your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking and eating. If you have interest in our club or just have questions, please contact one of the officers shown above.
