Our guest speaker for the December meeting will be Dr. Kevin Wagner, NASA Sagan Fellow at UArizona Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory. Dr. Wagner is using ground-based adaptive optics systems to search for young and forming planetary systems. He is also an amateur astrophotographer. One of the club’s outreach programs is to provide a telescope to every 5th- grade student at the Coronado Middle School. This program is funded by our contributions through Public School Tax Credit, a dollar-fordollar reduction in your Arizona state income tax. More on this subject will be presented at the meeting. We are having such a wonderful time studying this fall in the book of Philippians, discovering joy in our hearts that this troubled world cannot take away. We will end this study December 8, break for the holidays, and begin a new study in January. Hope to see many of you there. If you are new to SCOV or just have questions, call Elaine Farmer. Leave a message if no answer. Have a blessed Christmas season. Genealogy Pres. Holly Gibson 303-548-1299 ghgibson@live.com General meetings Oct.-May, Mon., 1 PM www.scvgs.org
Have you ever wanted to know if your ancestor arrived on the Mayflower or are you interested in knowing if your ancestor served in the Revolutionary War? Join the Sun City Vistoso Genealogy Society Monday, December 20, 1 PM, Catalina Vista, when the society will be hosting a round-table discussion about applying to lineage societies. The Jamestowne Society consists of descendants of early settlers who lived or held colonial government positions in Jamestowne, Virginia, prior to 1700. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants is a non-profit, non-political organization committed to the research on the lineal descent of the Mayflower Pilgrims and education about the Pilgrims who traveled aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution are both nonprofit, non-political organizations whose members have proved their descent from American Patriots. Our club provides a twice-a-month opportunity for lively discussions of challenging ideas, using the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. This year, we are reading selections from Her Own Accord: American Women on Identity, Culture and Community. December’s readings focus on the topic of family. Through poetry, fiction and nonfiction we will engage in such questions as “What constitutes family?” and examine the choices we make in family life. For more information, contact Barbara or Maryfaith.
