Women’s Oral Health and Overall Health • Diabetes: People with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease and may make it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar. Gum disease may also be a risk factor for diabetes, even in otherwise healthy indviduals.
Other important information • Menopause — oral symptoms experienced during this stage of a you should know: • Menstruation — some women women’s life include red or inflamed
find that their gums swell and bleed prior to their periods, while others experience cold sores or canker sores. These symptoms usually go away once your period starts. Oral contraceptives — inflamed gums are one of the most common side effects. • Pregnancy — studies show many pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis, when dental plaque builds up on the teeth and irritates the gums. Symptoms include red, inflamed and bleeding gums. Prenatal care is especially important.
•Respiratory problems:
PRESENTED BY RICHARD J. MCCANN, D.M.D., P.A.
Is There a Link Between My Oral Health and My Overall Health? The Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health states that good oral health is essential to good general health. And specifically for women, a growing body of research has linked gum disease to a variety of health problems that affect women. Because gum disease is a bacterial infection, it can enter the bloodstream and may be a factor in causing other health complications:
• Heart disease: People with gum
disease may be more at risk for heart disease and have nearly twice the risk of having a fatal heart attack. Heart disease is also the number one killer of American women.1 • Stroke: One study found a casual relationship of oral infections as a risk factor for stroke.
Bacteria that grow in the oral cavity can travel to the lungs causing respiratory disease such as pneumonia - especially in people with gum disease.
• Pregnancy outcomes:
Pregnant women who have gum disease may be more likely to have a baby born too early or too small. Gum disease may also trigger increased levels of biological fluids that induce labor.
gums, oral pain and discomfort, burning sensations, altered taste sensations and dry mouth. • Osteoporosis — a number of studies have suggested a link between osteoporosis and bone loss in the jaw. Researchers suggest this may lead to tooth loss because the density of the bone that supports teeth may be decreased. When combined with gum disease, osteoporosis speeds up the process of bone loss around the teeth.
Because gum disease is usually painless, many women may not even realize they have it until it reaches an advanced state. Your best defense is to brush and floss daily and see your dentist regularly.
How do My Oral Health Needs Change Throughout My Life?
Women have special oral health requirements during the unique phases in their lives. Changes in female hormone levels during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause exaggerate the way gums react to plaque. So at these times, women need to be especially thorough when brushing every day in order to prevent gum disease.

Perimenopause: A Second Puberty?
BY ANGELA CASWELL-MONACK, DO As an OBGYN, I love taking care of women at every stage of life, but perimenopause (the period of about ten years leading up to menopause) just might be my favorite. Menopause is defined as 1 year without a menstrual period. The average age of menopause in the United States is about 51.5 years, and the timing is often similar between mother and daughter, older sister and younger sister. Some things can make the menopausal transition happen sooner such as smoking and particular chemotherapy drugs. But, menopause is a natural biological process. Though we talk about menopause in terms of the uterus (menstrual bleeding,) menopausal changes and symptoms are all a function of your ovarian hormones (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.) Menopause marks the end of your menstrual cycles and your fertility as the ovaries quiesce (become quiet and stop ovulating), but it does not just happen overnight. (Except, of course, for women who have had surgical removal of their ovaries and uterus prior to their natural menopause.) So, back to perimenopause. Usually, perimenopause begins in the early 40s but sometimes starts in the late 30s. The ovaries become erratic and start to sputter. At first, you may miss a period here or there, and your periods may change in nature and become heavier or longer. Your hormones start to go a little berserk; it may remind you of the hormonal rollercoaster of puberty. Some women experience hot flashes, fatigue, mood swings, trouble sleeping, changes in sex drive, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, acne, thinning hair, weight gain, increase in facial hair, changes in fingernails, night sweats, difficulty concentrating, or forgetfulness. No two women will
have the same exact perimenopause experience. But, we all have a lot in common. In times past, no one really talked about “the change of life,” but now, there is even an off-broadway production about it, “Menopause, The Musical.” Some women only have a couple years of symptoms, others have 12 or more years.
plenty of medical, surgical and alternative medicine treatments available. Hormonal treatments and nonhormonal treatments abound. Sometimes, a woman will say, “I’d rather just deal with it, now that I know what it is.” It is rewarding either way.
I hope that if you are going through The third reason I like perimenopause perimenopause, that you will talk with is because historically in our culture, in your women’s healthcare provider folklore and stories and even in traditional about your experience. There are academia, the menopausal transition is many conditions that have overlapping described as “the end of femininity”, symptoms. And, you don’t have to go it “a time of female hysteria” and “the alone. madness.” At one time or another, women were locked away in asylums for You can reach Dr. Caswell-Monack at “climacteric insanity,” they underwent Bayside Health Association by calling clitoridectomies, they accepted bizarre the Lewes, DE office at 302-645-4700 treatments like vaginal injections of lead. or the Georgetown, DE office at 302I think this misunderstanding is funny and 856-3597. sad at the same time. There is so much that we still do not understand about the female experience of menopause or even how to ameliorate the symptoms; yet we have come so far in the last 100 years. Perhaps some days for the individual woman, perimenopause is madness and sometimes she probably does feel hysterical. But, as a society and a medical profession, we need to take it seriously and continue to learn about it. Half of the population experiences menopause, and From Left to Right in the back is Dr. Leo H. Eschbach, DO, women are spending more Dr. Steven Berlin, MD seated, Dr Vincent B.Killeen, MD, and more years of their lives F.A.C.O.G. and Dr. Tabitha F. Perry seated
This all sounds so terrible, so why do I like this season of a woman’s life? First, because this is perhaps the most empowered time in a woman’s life. Often, a woman has spent her whole adult life up to this point taking care of other people- her children, her husband or partner, her parents, her friends. Not to say that caring for your loved ones is not rewarding, but many women put themselves on the back burner, so to speak, because there is always another priority-family, relationships, work, money, etc. The typical woman juggles so many things that her own physical and emotional needs get minimized. Every day, I take care of women who have not seen a gynecologist in 20 years because they were just too busy; granted, going to the gynecologist is not something the average woman wants to do. But what I love about the perimenopausal woman is that she is just plain human. By this age, she has enough life experience to stand up for herself, speak her mind, and not worry what other people will think. By the time I see her in my office, she is ready to make herself a priority, too. The second reason I love perimenopause is because it is medically fascinating. The symptoms of menopause need to be sorted out from other medical conditions such as thyroid disorder, unexpected pregnancy, diabetes, uterine or ovarian cancer, mood disorders, etc. This type of investigation is part of why I became a doctor. Sometimes, the evaluation includes just taking a thorough history, and sometimes blood tests, hormone tests, ultrasound of the pelvis, biopsies or other tests might be needed. But, once everything else is ruled out, treatment can be tailored to the particular woman’s perimenopause concerns. There are

postmenopausal. On one hand, we should embrace the menopausal transition as a natural part of life, and on the other hand, we seriously need to figure out how to help women get through it and give them more options.

Ten Common Myths about Cardiovascular Disease
BY R. ALBERTO ROSA, M.D., FACC Dr. Ramon Alberto Rosa is a graduate of the University of Santo Domingo in his native Dominican Republic. He completed his post-graduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia with a residency in internal medicine (1991-1994), Chief Medical Resident (1994-1995), and cardiology fellowship (1995-1998). Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July 1998. He has served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Dr. Rosa is trained in non-invasive cardiology, Nuclear Transesopageal Echocardiograms, as well as invasive diagnostic procedures and pacemaker implantations. Dr. Rosa is board certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is also a Certified Aviation Medical Examiner and is Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine.
There are a number of popular beliefs out there about your cardiovascular health that might be misleading and dangerous when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Here are some of the most common ones: 1. “Heart disease runs in my family, so it’s only a matter of time until I get it too” No question there is a strong genetic component to heart disease, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. On the contrary, a strong and consistent set of measures should be taken early to dramatically reduce your risk: stay active, don’t smoke, strict cholesterol control, treat diabetes and hypertension, reduce salt intake, change and stay on a healthy diet. 2. Chest pain is a sure sign of a heart attack”. Not quite. Chest pain remains the most common symptom of a heart attack, but there are many others just as important that can be subtle: Shortness of breath,

8. “ I stopped my medicines because my blood pressure was normal, or my cholesterol was normal or I feel good now”. Very often people assume that once your blood pressure and cholesterol reach the recommended levels, then the job is done and the medications are no longer needed. The reality is these are chronic problems and need maintenance and continued treatment. Please consult with your doctor before stoping any medication on your own. Feeling better is fine, but it might be because you have been on that treatment in the first place. If you are having trouble affording medications, talk to your doctor to be switched to a less expensive alternative or they may have certain discount programs available to you.
dizziness, nausea, pain or discomfort in the arms, shoulders, jaw, mid upper back, or palpitations. It’s important to recognize any so these symptoms and to call 911 immediately.
3. “ I can get to the hospital just as fast ( or faster) than the ambulance can” Wrong and very dangerous for many reasons: The emergency medical system staff will initiate the right treatment and activate the hospital system ahead of your arrival in the hospital. You will get into the emergency department much faster. Don’t be a fool, call 911 and let them help you instead. People have had cardiac arrest while driving and have become unconscious, causing fatal accidents. 4. “ I am too young to worry about heart disease”. An early adoption of a healthy life style will have a tremendous impact in the prevention of cardiovascular disease later on. The heart attack someone might have in their 40’s or 50’s began as a process of plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries and others in childhood and adolescent years. So, educating your children for life long healthy living is perhaps the most important legacy.
9. “Aspirin is a good blood thinner to prevent strokes if you have atrial fibrillation”. This is a common one. The truth is that if you have this heart rhythm problem you are at a much higher risk for a stroke and you need to be on a true blood thinner, such as warfarin or one of the newer
agents now available on the market. Aspirin alone is not an effective treatment in this situation. 10. “Drinking a glass of wine a day reduces your risk of heart disease.” The question is -- how big is your glass of wine? The recommended amount of daily consumption of wine is 5 ounces for women and men over the age of 65. For men under age 65 they can have 2 glasses of 5 ounce each. The standard wine glasses hold between 12-14 ounces of wine, so it is very easy to consume more than intended. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which has been studied in animals to potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, but recent research has discredited some of this claim. The same antioxidant can be obtained from eating grapes and drinking grape juice, so wine consumption is not necessary for this potential benefit. Just some food for thought. Maybe over a glass of red wine, or maybe not.
5. “Diabetes won’t affect my heart so long as I take my medicines”. It’s critically important to keep a very strict control of diabetes and sugar levels to reduce the risk of a heart attack and stroke. However, you still remain at high risk for those events. Weight loss, regular exercise, smoking cessation, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol become even more important if you are also diabetic. 6. “ I will know when my blood pressure is high because I will have a headache” High blood pressure continues to be a “silent killer” and most people will have no symptoms, until it’s late and other organ systems are involved. Early detection and effective treatment of high blood pressure are absolutely critical in preventing stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney failure. Check your blood pressure regularly and discuss it with your health care provider.
7. “ Cholesterol checks are for older people”. Not exactly. The American Heart Association recommends an initial cholesterol check at age 20. Early detection and intervention are very important. If you have a very strong family history for heart disease, checking before age 20 is a good idea as well. Again a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstone of treatment.

CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Fat Removal fat. This non-invasive procedure represents an alternative to surgical liposuction by using a novel cooling technology that permanently removes fat cells from treated areas.
Michelle Parsons, MD
is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. The biggest trend in cosmetic surgery for 2013 is the expansion of non-invasive body countouring technology, the best of which is CoolSculpting, which is now available at ReNove Medical in Rehoboth Beach. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat. Arms and legs can be treated as well. Unlike some other non-surgical technologies that release fat from fat cells, such as Vasershape and I-Lipo, Coolsculpting destroys the fat cells thereby eliminating treated fat permanently, as our body does not make new fat cells. Coolsculpting is a unique non-surgical treatment for removal of fat from localized pockets of excess
How does CoolSculpting Work? The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas. What are the most common areas to be treated? Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. These are the areas that CoolSculpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can be treated and eliminated
by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the muffin top, waist, brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.
Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting? The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible Before to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. It is common to have numbness or decreased sensitivity in the treated area lasting 1 to 2 weeks. In some instances patients will develop a burning tingling sensation 5 days after the treatment which can be controlled with a Lidoderm patch. There are virtually no long term negative side effects. What does CoolSculpting feel like? Our treatment room is very comfortable where you will relax on a padded recliner. When the CoolSculpting is applied to the fatty area to be treated there is a sensation of pulling that feels slightly uncomfortable for the first 5 to 10 minutes. Gradually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. There seems to be a natural endorphin release during the treatment so patients are very relaxed during the treatment, which takes an hour. Some people have fallen asleep during the treatment! A typical treatment session lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how many areas are treated. During the treatment, we have Netflix available so you can watch a movie or catch
After up on your favorite television program. Busy moms find this time to themselves a real treat! We also have Wi-Fi.
How quickly do people see results? After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells are actually killed and will be eliminated by the body over time. Many report seeing changes in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. The full benefit will take as long as 60 to 90 days. How long to results last? Once the fat cells are frozen, killed and naturally eliminated by your body, the results are permanent. You can still gain weight in other areas if you over eat and don’t continue to try to remain fit. If you are interested in learning more about CoolSculpting and would like to see if you are a good candidate for this effective treatment to lose unwanted fatty areas, please call us today to set up an appointment to meet with Dr. Michelle Parsons at ReNove Medical, Health Rejuvenating Spa, in Rehoboth Beach, 302227-1079. We will be offering an introductory Special this season, so please inquire.

suffer in Wireless Technology Enhances Don’t silence . Feel control Treatment For Bladder Control and confidence .
F
or many women, the uncontrollable urge to go to the bathroom controls their lives. If you are one of these women, don’t give up hope. The solution may be a device that uses the nerves to help regulate the bladder and bowl and avoid accidents. The technique is called sacral nerve stimulation, and thanks to recent improvements in technology, patients have greater access to this potentially life-changing treatment. Think of the nerves of the pelvis as the wiring that regulates bladder and bowel function. Sometimes the wiring is faulty. There are non-surgical ways to correct those problems, such as medication, dietary modification and muscle strengthening.
But when those strategies don’t work, surgery could be the best option. Sacral nerve stimulation involves positioning a wire next to the nerve that regulates the pelvic organs, which include the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel and rectum. The wire is then connected to an implanted stimulator which is very similar to a pacemaker. Sacral nerve stimulation is safe, effective and has been available for almost 20 years.
Minimal down time
The procedure to implant the device takes approximately 30 minutes and can be done as an outpatient, so women have minimal recovery time and can get back to their busy lives faster. Best of all, the vast majority of patients will experience a significant
improvement in the quality of their lives almost immediately.
Imagine being free from overactive bladder and accidental bowel leakage! No more avoiding leaving the house. Instead, women feel in control and confident. The procedure has gone through improvements in design throughout the years and now an exciting new modification which can greatly improve the patient experience is available. The most significant improvement is related to the trial period. You can actually try sacral nerve stimulation before the device is implanted. That way we can make sure it corrects your problem before implantation. For the last 20 years, during the trial period, the wire was placed and then connected to an extension

cable that was outside the skin and plugged directly into an external stimulator which mimicked the device.
Wireless technology
The new Verify™ system relies on wireless technology, so during the trial we use an extension piece that ends in a small box that contains Bluetooth technology. The box is secured to you with no need to plug in. The system then communicates via a wireless signal with a controller box that can be kept within nine feet, but does not need to be connected by wires. The new box allows for precise control of the test stimulation with no worries about wiring. All of this can improve each person’s experience with a tried-andtrue technology that has been implanted successfully

Struggling to Lose Weight? It’s a well-known fact that obesity and its related conditions are on the rise all over the world. In fact 1 in 3 Americans are overweight or obese. Pull Your Weeds, Not Your Back When Gardening!
Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.
Gardening is usually one of the first activities of the season where we subject ourselves to sudden bursts of activity and really put our backs at risk. Growing your own food for health, fun and sustainability can be a fun and relaxing way of reconnecting with mother nature and with the rising cost of groceries, growing a vegetable garden can be a great way to save money on home grocery budgets. With spring in the air, you look forward to getting out in the garden but you’re not looking forward to feeling sore after all the kneeling, pulling, leaning, and twisting. After a long winter of not moving our bodies this way, it’s important to prepare your spine, joints, and muscles. But the use of hoes, trowels and weed whackers has also been sending aspiring gardeners to their local doctor of chiropractic with yard-work related muscle strains and pains. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, here are some outdoorsrelated injury statistics to consider as you pull on your gardening gloves and lace up your boots: • In 2010, more than 35,500 people injured themselves using a stepladder • More than 41,000 Americans injured themselves while gardening or using gardening equipment • More than 127,000 people were injured while operating a lawn mower. Gardening and yard work can bring on many injuries for a variety of reasons. Specifically, people tend to do too much too soon. Many common injuries including tendonitis, sprains, strains or fractures can be prevented with proper technique like bending at the knees when lifting instead of from the back or securing and stabilizing a ladder before climbing. These are simple precautions that are overlooked too often.
Whether you’re maintaining a vegetable garden or adorning your yard with fragrant spring flowers and bushes, caution that using this equipment can result in back and neck pain, as well as more serious muscular strains and tears if not used properly. The repetitive motion that your body undergoes when using such equipment can bring on a whole host of mechanical problems within the body. Here are some tips to help you enjoy a safe, productive day of summer landscaping: • Regardless of what piece of equipment you are using, make sure it has a strap—and that you use it. Place the strap over your head on the shoulder on the opposite side of your body from the device. This will help normalize your center of gravity. • Be sure to switch the side on which you are operating the equipment as often as possible, and to balance the muscles being used, alternate your stance and motion frequently. • Take frequent breaks. • Consider electric-powered items, especially if you experience back or neck pain, as they tend to be lighter than their engine-powered counterparts. • When picking up or putting down your equipment, be sure to bend from the knees, not at the waist. • Keep the object close to your body as you lift, not at arm’s length. While it is critical that you operate your yard equipment safely, it is equally important that you prepare your body for the work you are about to do. To help avoid injury, be sure to include a warm-up/cool-down period that involves stretching. Before stretching, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Breathe in and out slowly throughout each stretching exercise until the muscle is stretched to its furthest point.
At that point, hold your breath in. When you relax, breathe out. Stretch gently and smoothly. Do not bounce or jerk your body in any way and stretch as far as you can comfortably. You should not feel pain. Following are stretches recommend for getting the most out of the time you spend in the yard: 1. Stand up and prop your heel on a back door step or stool with your knee slightly bent. Bend forward until you feel a slight pull at the back of the thigh, called the hamstring. You may need to stabilize yourself by holding onto a garage door handle. Hold the position for 20 seconds, then relax. Do it once more, then repeat with the other leg. 2. Stand up and put your right hand against a wall or other stable surface. Bend your left knee and grab your ankle with your left hand. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to stretch the quadricep muscle at the front of your thigh. Hold the position for 20 seconds, relax and do it again. Repeat with the other leg. 3. Weave your fingers together above your head with your palms up. Lean to one side for 10 seconds to stretch the side of your upper body, then reverse. Repeat two or three times. 4. Hug yourself. Wrap your arms around yourself after letting your breath out and rotate to one side, as far as you can go. Hold it for 10 seconds. Then reverse. Repeat two or three times. If you find that you are still feeling sore or stiff, it is time to consider Chiropractic care. Often times, it doesn’t matter how much you warm up and stretch; if there is an underlying spinal problem, you will eventually feel the effects of it, which means it has already done some damage to your health. Don’t wait any longer!
Testimonial “In 2013, I was in intense lower back pain. I tried spinal injections, pain relievers and yoga to no avail. I started seeing Dr. Tracy for Chiropractic, massage and acupuncture in 2014 and my life changed. I have not had any severe back pain in an entire year now. She is a miracle worker!” Marian M.

Home Health Care
Women Age Differently Than Men
By Carolyn O’Neal CHEER HOME SERVICES PROGRAM DIRECTOR
It is true – men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, and that does not change as they advance in years. Women outnumber men in each age category over the age of 55. Therefore, health care for the older woman is and will be an increasing concern. Women are survivors, and many of their health concerns relate to that fact. While older women die of the same disorders as men – heart disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and accidental injuries – older women are more likely to be afflicted with one or more chronic conditions that can often cause limitations in their lifestyles. Incontinence is one of the most common reasons that older women are institutionalized in long-term health facilities. Osteoporosis is another serious concern that primarily affects
women as they age and can have serious consequences by increasing their chances for debilitating injuries such as hip fractures. Drug interactions and misuse involving multiple medications can cause physical or mental disorders and can aggravate pre-existing conditions. Finally, distinguishing between depression and dementia requires testing and careful diagnosis. Depression is the most common form of mental disorder in older women. Dementia, notably Alzheimer’s disease, is a less treatable mental disorder. When developing a home health care program for an elderly woman, it is imperative to carefully consider the individual’s needs and lifestyle requirements. For women, the emotional and psychological changes that accompany aging can make it difficult to cope. Some women may completely shut themselves away from the world as a result of poor health or some other reason. CHEER Home Health Services can help those who need a little assistance in managing their needs or can provide assistance with daily living activities 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Mobility is important to the elderly, even if it is just within their own surroundings. Elderly people need familiar surroundings and people around them to maintain a comfort level. They prefer to stay in their homes in old age. If an elderly person’s mobility has become limited due to aging, they may require a certain amount of assistance in their daily routine. Without such assistance, all too often elderly people become isolated within their own homes and ultimately fall victim to situations which could have been avoided. Personal Home Care given by CHEER Certified Nursing Aides can include assistance with bathing, grooming, exercise, and errands. CHEER Housekeeping Services include dusting, vacuuming, and other necessary household tasks from laundry to shopping and meal preparation. An elderly person needs proper nutrition to stay healthy and enjoy a comfortable life. Many older women live alone. Because of this, they think it is either unnecessary to fix a nutritious meal for just one person or believe it is a waste of money to do so. They also may not feel physically

able to do the job. CHEER Home Health Aides can do nutritious meal preparation and assist the elderly with their eating capabilities. An elderly woman’s psychological need is also very important. Just because they are old and slow, does not mean that they should be ignored or confined to themselves. CHEER Companion Care provides aides who can spend time with the elderly, read to them, and chat with them, play games with them, and make them feel wanted, cared for, and loved. Satisfying all of these needs contributes to a healthy lifestyle for elderly persons. Advancing age slows down the body. This is a normal aspect of life and cannot be helped. Regular visits by CHEER Home Health Aides can keep check on the senior citizen’s health issues and prevent them from causing any serious harm. Regular check-ups by CHEER’s Registered Nurse can help identify serious health problems at the initial stage during which treatment is possible. Aging is not a disease. CHEER can help your loved one – male or female - fulfill their basic everyday needs and remain independent in their homes.
It is CHEER’s mission to promote and maintain the highest quality of life and independence by developing and providing services that meet the continuing needs of people 50 and over. What is Palliative Care and How Can it Help You and Your Family? congestive heart failure, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, or kidney failure.
When is Palliative Care appropriate?
Patients can receive Palliative Care, along with the care from their physician, from the time an illness has been diagnosed, throughout treatment and the final stages of the disease.
Why Palliative Care?
The onset of serious illness impacts a family’s quality of life in so many ways. Patients and their caregivers must cope with debilitating symptoms. They must coordinate appointments and travel to specialists and labs; as they struggle to comprehend new medical terminology and face difficult decisions for treatment options. And they carry all the fears and anxieties that accompany an illness. With a team approach, the Palliative Care Program of Delaware Hospice improves the quality of life of patients diagnosed with a serious illness, and their families, by adding a level of support to the physician’s care.
What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care helps seriously ill patients who are receiving active, curative treatment. The Palliative Care Program provides assistance to deal with the physical and psychosocial burdens of a serious illness through home visits by a physician, nurse practitioner and/or social worker. The Program is initiated through a consultation from the treating physician. The Palliative Care Team works with the treating physician to manage symptoms and assist the patient to identify goals of care and how best to meet them.
Who qualifies for Palliative Care?
Palliative Care of Delaware Hospice is appropriate for anyone at any age, with a serious illness at any stage, and can be provided together with curative treatments. Patients benefiting from palliative care include but are not limited to those diagnosed with cancer,

How does Palliative Care help patients?
Palliative Care of Delaware Hospice improves the quality of life for its patients by alleviating symptoms and stress and by focusing more on the “human side” of serious illness. The Palliative Care Team specialists provide comfort, clarity, choice, and connection as they: • make the patient comfortable by alleviating both their anxiety and physical pain and symptoms • support coordinated care in partnership with the patient’s physician • allow time for communication with patients and family members for them to better understand the illness and goals of care • reduce stress within the family unit • consider all needs, medical, physical, emotional, and spiritual, which might alleviate suffering and brings comfort and peace and a better quality of life • collaborate to evaluate the situation from multiple angles, assuring that each patient receives the best possible treatment and care for their condition
Where is Palliative Care provided?
The Palliative Care Team members of Delaware Hospice visit patients and their families in their homes or nursing home facilities—wherever they are.
Who pays for Palliative Care?
Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans cover palliative care.
What are the benefits of Palliative Care?
Palliative Care helps patients’ anxiety and health by reducing the number of

office visits as well as emergency room visits and hospital readmissions. A 2011 Public Opinion Research Report on Palliative Care found that 70% of consumers had no knowledge of palliative care. Yet, when consumers understood what palliative care is, 62% were very likely to use the service for a loved one with a serious illness.*
Why choose Delaware Hospice for Palliative Care? Since 1982, Delaware Hospice has been meeting the needs for comfort and care of patients and families in the community in partnership with medical professionals. Delaware Hospice’s interdisciplinary team members, including nurses, chaplains,
counselors, and social workers, are experts in symptom management as well as emotional and spiritual counseling. Delaware Hospice holds accreditation by the Joint Commission, ensuring a quality of care that meets the rigorous standards of the Joint Commission.

What is Ultherapy? is a face and neck treatment that improves skin laxity in a meaningful way but completelynon–surgically.
Jowls
Michelle Parsons, MD
is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. Here at ReNove Medical, Dr. Parsons offers Ultherapy, a state of the art medical procedure utilizing focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten sagging skin. No scalpel or anesthesia is needed. Ultherapy is great for people who would like tightening and lifting of facial skin without have a surigcal facelift. The Ulthera sound energy passes right through the skin and targets the areas you want lifted. During a typical 30-60 minute Ultherapy treatment session, an ultrasound applicator is passed over each region of the face. The sound waves emitted deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue. The beauty of Ultherapy ‘uplifting ultrasound’ is that it
Ultherapy works great for sagging jowls, where the skin is fatty, heavy and drooping. Ultherapy is able to reduce this fatty heaviness, tapering the jaw line, for a more youthful look. Ultherapy can restore a more youthful shape to the face from a square to the inverted triangle.
Nasolabial Folds
Ultherapy also works well to minimize the drooping of excess skin that we get along each side of the nose, or lower cheeks. You may think that you need to fill in these areas with a filler, but the real problem may be that fat and loose skin is just falling down due to the effects of gravity. With ultherapy we can target this area and minimize the fattiness and tighten up that skin. Again this will restore the more youthful balance of the face with the center of gravity higher in the cheek areas.
Neck
Ultherapy can tighten up that loose skin underneath our necks as well. The area that Ultherapy works the best is that area just underneath the chin and extending into that curve of the neck. Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a surgical neck lift. But if you have somewhat loose and fatty skin in your upper neck, hanging just beneath your chin, Ultherapy can improve this area, and improve your profile.

Perhaps one the most dramatic areas that Ultherapy can improve on without surgery is the eye area and creating a brow lift, helping to lift heavy drooping eyelids. Ultherapy can make the eyes appear more open,
more awake, rested and more youthful. This may be subtle change but this small difference can have a significant effect! Our clients really love this part of the Ultherapy results.
Before
Overall Ultherapy works wonders to taper, redefine your facial contours, while eliminating fatty, droopy areas, and lift and tightening skin around the eyes and underneath the chin, for a more youthful sculpted look. The stars in Hollywood do this treatment, and now you have access to this age defying procedure right here in Delaware at the beach. Dr. Parsons is pleased to bring this cutting edge highly sought after technology to you to help you look your best. If you think you may be candidate for Ultherapy, please give us a call to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Michelle Parsons. 302227-1079.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Ultherapy?
After just one treatment with no downtime, your skin will gradually shift back into a more youthful position. Improvements include a sleeker, more defined jawline and tighter skin on the neck under the chin. Sagging skin on the cheeks can be tightened and lifted, which in turn can
After
improve folds from the nose to mouth, folds from the mouth to jaw, and drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look in general. The results of Ultherapy are permanent, just as the results of a face-lift are permanent, 0f course, your skin will continue its natural aging process. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery but looking for meaningful results.
TESTIMONIAL One week after my Ultherapy Treatment, my husband, after being out of town for a couple of days asked me “what’s different about you,” he was staring at my face! Not having told him about my treatment I innocently said “what do you mean?” His response was “I am not sure but your face looks different.” I asked “different good or different bad?” He replied “different good, looks stretched.” I was surprised that the results were noticed that quickly. I found the treatment to be bearable, certainly wasn’t pain free, but tolerable. I was very happy when it was over! For the past 2 weeks following the treatment my face has been tender which is a reminder that the treatment is continuing to work! I would highly recommend it to all! K.M. – Ocean City, MD.

Living Well Beyond HIV When HIV/AIDS captured the nation’s attention in the 1980s, the overriding sentiment was that people who had contracted the disease wouldn’t be around 30 years later. Today, however, about 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV and half of those will be 50 years old or older this year. Through medical research, education and medication, people who have HIV are living longer, happier and healthier lives.
patients who receive care through specialized pharmacies are more adherent to their medication than those receiving care through a nonspecialized pharmacy.
“I’m living life, and HIV is a part of that life that I have to attend to. I have to treat my HIV, but I also have to live. You can live a normal life with HIV, and if you live a normal life and you do what you need to do, you will certainly age with HIV. I’m preparing for beyond 59,” Walgreens is acknowledging this change in prognosis by launching Vanessa said. Well Beyond HIV, a national campaign highlighting people aging well To learn more about Vanessa and other’s story beyond their HIV diagnosis. visit wellbeyondHIV.com “Finding out that I was diagnosed with HIV changed my life forever, but not in the bad way that people might think. I felt that I was given another view of the world and I wasn’t going to take it for granted this time,” said 59-year-old campaign participant, Vanesa, who has been living with HIV since 1991. The centerpiece of the campaign is a traveling art exhibit that’s designed to inspire dialogue, eradicate stigmas and amplify the voices, faces and stories of individuals over 50 living with HIV. “As the population of older Americans living with HIV/AIDS grows, the daily realities, concerns and successes of their lives can largely remain unrecognized,” says Glen Pietrandoni, senior director of virology at Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy. “By sharing their challenges and triumphs through the compelling photography and insightful testimonials that are part of the exhibit, we hope to increase awareness of the unique needs of these individuals.”

For Vanessa, learning of her HIV status was like learning her best friend has died or she’s lost the love of her life. She went through every human emotion possible. “I was mad, sad, angry, hurt, lost and confused and basically resigned myself to dying.” Soon she stopped worrying so much about herself, and she began to focus in on other parts of her life. “I realized I’ve got a lot of things going on, that are not necessarily associated with HIV. I face the same challenges that “normal people” face. I’m Vanessa first; I’m HIV-positive second. I deal with what any 59-year-old would. I deal with a 19-year-old who calls and says, “Mommy, my tuition’s due,” she said.

Healing Touch
CLAUDIA ALESI, HTPA Reiki Master/Instructor Healing Touch Practitioner Apprentice
Healing Touch is a holistic approach to healing.
It is an energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to enhance, support and facilitate the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health and self-healing. Healing Touch uses gentle, light or near body touch to clear, balance, energize and support the human energy system in an effort to promote healing for the whole person: mind, body and spirit. The goal in Healing Touch is to restore harmony and balance in the energy system, placing the client in a position to selfheal. Healing Touch is a complementary, integrative energy therapy that can be used in conjunction with conventional health care and is used in collaboration with other approaches to health and healing.
Stop by and see me at the
19th Holistic Health Fair on March 29, 2014 from 9:30 – 4:30 at the Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, DE. You can learn more about Healing Touch at my workshop which will be held at 1:30 p.m.
When our energy system is depleted we feel tired, we have difficulty coping and it is difficult for our immune system to function properly. Our energy may be depleted due to stress, illness, injury, grief, medical conditions, surgery, and medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. When our energy system is off balance, the energy that usually flows through and around our bodies becomes congested. One example of congested energy is pain. When a client has pain, the practitioner focuses on removing the energy congestion so that the pain level is reduced. Another example is stress. Stress may affect our body by causing muscle tightness in our necks and shoulders. We may develop a headache or experience discomfort in other parts of our body. Stress causes congestion in our energy system. Healing Touch techniques help to relieve that congestion. Healing Touch also promotes relaxation. When our body relaxes, endorphins are released from the brain, which helps the muscles to relax. When the muscles relax, circulation is improved and the increased blood flow elevates oxygen levels throughout the body, which then allows nutrients to be absorbed more efficiently; enzymes are built to aid digestion, hormones are regulated, and toxins are released from the body. This allows healthy cells to regenerate and promotes a sense of well-being, which also supports healing and regulates the immune system.
Research evidence supports the use of Healing Touch in the following: • Reduction of pain • Cancer support care/provides support during chemotherapy and radiation • Facilitate wound healing • Decrease anxiety and tension, and creates a sense of well-being • Relieves stress and depression • Strengthen the immune system
Melissa, Bethany Beach, DE - When I started with Claudia Alesi and her healing touch work, I had severe joint pain in my neck and shoulders, lymphatic drainage issues, sleep problems and extremely low energy. I was also dealing with liver, kidney and thyroid problems, among other things. Healing touch not only increased my sense of well being and energy levels, but decreased my neck pain, my liver and kidneys are functioning normally, my lymphatic system is well on its way to being fully recovered and I feel like a new person. I was skeptical at first, but after my first treatment, the mental clarity and more restful sleep were enough to keep me going back again. But it’s helped me heal from the inside. Claudia Alesi is a healer and I would recommend anyone with acute or chronic health issues to give healing touch a try. It played a big part in turning my health completely around.

Health & Medicine Dr. Andrea Goldstein
Dr. Goldstein is a board-certified specialist in gastroenterology/hepatology who received her medical degree from Georgetown University. She enjoys being on the leading edge of new treatments for diseases that in the past had no cure. Dr. Goldstein is one of the physicians who perform the CRH O’Regan System at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates, for internal hemorrhoids. In most cases if the CRH O’Regan system is deemed appropriate, it can be performed at your initial consultation. Dr. Goldstein is an involved mother, helping her children with piano lessons and volunteering with Girl Scouts. She was trained in opera and sings in the community choir. She is also active with her synagogue, including delivering food to a local shelter through the Jewish Relief Agency. “As a doctor, I strive to give my patients the best possible medical care they can receive, in an environment where they can feel comfortable. This starts with talking and listening closely to ensure that I get a complete picture of the patient’s medical history and symptoms, and also that my patient understands what she needs to know to follow her treatment plan and return for the follow-up testing she needs to protect her health. Giving my time, compassion and full attention is as important as any test or procedure I perform.”
HEMORRHOIDAL TREATMENT Over half the population will experience some type of hemorrhoidal problem in their lifetime. You may be suffering in silence because you are too embarrassed to discuss the problem, or worry that the cure will be more painful than the problem itself. Now, advances in medicine have made hemorrhoid treatment fast and virtually painless. Your only challenge is finding a doctor who offers the right treatment and makes you feel comfortable receiving it. How do hemorrhoids develop? Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and engorged veins in the anal and rectal region. They are most commonly caused by changes in frequency of bowel movements, pressure of straining and hormonal changes or pressure during pregnancy. The veins swell and stretch and gradually lose the support of surrounding connective tissue. Hemorrhoids can cause the following symptoms: Itching/Burning Bleeding Protrusion during Bowel Movements Pain Hygiene Concerns Are all hemorrhoids the same? Hemorrhoids are actually classified into four stages based upon severity. This helps determine which treatment is most appropriate for you. 1) Stage I: The hemorrhoids remain inside at all times. They do not protrude from the anus. 2) Stage II: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but reduce spontaneously. 3) Stage III: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but require manual insertion. 4) Stage IV: Fourth degree hemorrhoids: The most severe hemorrhoids always protrude and cannot be pushed back inside. What are the treatment options for removing hemorrhoids? Effective hemorrhoid treatment depends on your specific medical condition. No doctor should recommend a solution without first doing an exam
to rule out other potential causes of rectal pain or bleeding.
Once you have been diagnosed with hemorrhoids, you will have different options to choose from, depending on the severity of your case. You may get adequate relief from increasing fiber in your diet, taking warm sitz baths and using topical creams. Treatment options include a variety of minimally invasive procedures that cut off blood flow to the hemorrhoid and cause it to shrink. In some cases your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue. What is the most painless method for treatment? An even less invasive and pain-free solution has recently been approved for internal hemorrhoids. This new banding option, the CRH O’Regan System ™ is considered the “gold standard” in treatment and almost eliminates the discomfort and recovery time associated with other hemorrhoid removal options. During the 60 SECOND procedure, the physician uses a gentle suction device to place a small rubber band around the tissue, just above the hemorrhoid. There are very few nerve endings in this area to cause any pain. The hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within a day or two. Research has shown that 99.8% of patients treated with the CRH O’Regan System ™ have no post-procedure pain and require no pain medication before, during, or after the procedure. There is no bowel prep, and you can drive yourself home afterwards. Another advantage, external hemorrhoids may also improve with this option. Make an appointment with a specialist If you or a family member is ready to get permanent relief from hemorrhoids, you should make an appointment with a digest specialist for an accurate diagnosis and the

Paying for Long-Term Care:
Is Planning Early & Protecting My Assets Ethical?
Amber B. Woodland, Esquire Michele Procino-Wells, Esquire Procino-Wells & Woodland, LLC BY: MICHELE PROCINO-WELLS, ESQUIRE Are you planning to go on vacation? What about planning a big family holiday dinner? Of course you are, and with great anticipation and excitement. But what about planning for your care as you advance in age? Many of us prefer not to think about it, believing that it will somehow all work out. Consider the scenarios below that illustrate the impact of planning early for long term care versus choosing the “wait and see” approach. Based on your current plan, which outcome is yours?
The Facts
John is 69 and Mary is 66. They have been retired for several years. Recently, their oldest child asked them whether they had made any plans if one of them suddenly got sick. John and Mary had not thought much about this since both of them were in good health. However, they agreed to seek some advice to see what their options were. John and Mary own a home and they have checking, savings and CD accounts that total $375,000. They both worked most of their adult lives, carefully watching their expenses and never spending money on extravagant items they didn’t feel they needed.
Scenario #1 – John and Mary
planning ahead. John and Mary spoke with an elder law attorney, as they knew they should update their will and powers of attorney. While there, they were surprised to learn that they could actually plan now to avoid running out of money in the future should they need long term care. They placed $225,000 and their home into an irrevocable trust, and
named their children as beneficiaries of the trust. If needed, their children would be able to take a distribution from the trust rather than using their own money for John and Mary’s needs. They kept the remaining $150,000 in a revocable trust that John and Mary would use for their living expenses. The $225,000 placed into the irrevocable trust would not be counted against them after 5 years, should either of them need long term care and the assistance of state benefits to pay for it. Unfortunately, six years later Mary had a severe stroke and ended up in a nursing home. John tried caring for her at home but was simply unable to. Because they had planned ahead and had set up an irrevocable trust, John was able to keep all of the remaining cash assets in their revocable trust, and Mary was able to qualify immediately for state Medicaid benefits. The irrevocable trust (which had now grown to $240,000) remained in place but did not count against Mary since more than 5 years had passed. John was incredibly relieved to know that he did not have to worry about paying for Mary’s care and could instead focus on visiting and providing support.
Medicaid Facts:
The Medicaid Program is funded by our federal and state governments. To receive Medicaid, an individual must meet certain requirements (such as income level), and also must go through an application process. Due to the lack of any other program in the U.S., Medicaid has, by default, become the long-term care insurance of the middle class. To cover long term care expenses, Medicaid requires that a person liquidate all assets and spend down to $2,000.00. With the help of elder law attorneys, people potentially needing long-term care can intentionally impoverish themselves in order to qualify for Medicaid and preserve some of their savings. This planning is done, not through exploitation of legal loopholes, but rather through strict adherence to the laws and regulations governing Medicaid.
In Summary:
It is important to plan early for the possibility of needing long term care. The benefits are numerous: financial, reduced stress on the family and peace of mind knowing that the family’s needs are taken care of regardless of any health care crisis that may occur. The Medicaid rules are extremely complicated, so it is important to create a comprehensive plan with an experienced, professional planner.
Client Testimonial “Amber exceeded my expectations! She immediately understood my issues and concerns and rapidly and thoroughly resolved them. Both Amber and Erin are to commended for their performance! I have and will continue to recommend your office. Thank you!” -Asset Protection Client
Scenario #2 – John and Mary
without planning ahead. Let’s assume John and Mary did not plan ahead. When Mary had a stroke at age 72, the couple had $350,000 in checking, savings and CDs. Under the Medicaid regulations in place at the time, John was able to keep approximately $116,000 of the assets, but most of the remaining assets had to be spent for Mary’s care. While their home would be protected since John was still living there, if he were to become ill the home could be subject to a lien by Medicaid.
“I was scared about my financial future. My life was changed when I learned the care I needed could be provided at home without exhausting my life savings.”
It took nearly two years to get Mary qualified for Medicaid, and the process was incredibly stressful for John and their children. Furthermore, no planning has been done for John and if his health fails, their remaining assets are at risk.
With asset protection planning you can maintain your independence and receive the care you deserve while preserving your legacy. Contact our office at 302.628.4140 to schedule a consultation. Planning today to protect your family’s tomorrow. www. pww l aw .c om

Medicaid planning is not about hiding assets. It includes the use of agreements, discounted purchases, trusts, gifts, annuities, strategic spend down of assets, etc. – all of which is fully disclosed to Medicaid during the application process.

Spring Ahead-
Change Your Clocks & Check Your Insurance Coverages
who has had to handle the consequences of inadequate or outdated insurance coverages on behalf of clients – I can assure you, a policy review is well worth your time.
By Susan D’Alonzo Ament, Esquire
Susan D’Alonzo Ament is a partner with Morris James LLP and has practiced for 32 years representing personal injury victims. Over the years, Mrs. Ament has found that some women don’t understand the crucial need to have adequate automobile insurance coverage in the event of a serious accident. Susan Ament educates women on these needs every day in her practice and in seminars that she presents throughout the year.
W
ith spring just around the corner, we’re reminded to turn our clocks ahead, and to check the batteries in our smoke detectors. Many of us take advantage of milder weather to clean out the garage or to attack the overgrown hedges in the back yard with that new chain saw we received in December. But when a rainy spring Saturday rolls around and your weekend tasks are temporarily postponed, I’d like to suggest another, very important activity to add to your seasonal “To Do” list: set aside the time to review your automobile insurance policy to be sure it is adequate and up to date. I can hear a chorus of groans at the above advice, and I can even visualize eyeballs rolling as I write this. But – as a personal injury attorney with decades of experience dealing with insurance companies in court and around the settlement table, and as someone

protection insurance (“PIP” or “no-fault” car insurance), to cover medical costs and possible funeral expenses, regardless of who caused the accident.
Many events can occur in a person’s life in the course of a year, and some of them can even translate into saving you money. Here are a few items to keep in mind as you examine your automobile insurance policy to determine if your coverage is adequate:
It is important to realize these minimum requirements keep you legal to drive, but are not designed to fully protect the average individual driver. By carrying only the minimum state- required insurance, in the event of an accident, you will be legally responsible for all other uncovered costs. You will have to pay out-ofpocket for any hospital or medical bills, and funeral expenses not covered by insurance. Any assets you have, including your home and your savings, may be at risk.
Is the Minimum Enough? Like most states, Delaware has established minimum liability coverage requirements to pay costs related to injury or damages in an accident. By law, Delaware drivers must also maintain minimum limit requirements ($15,000 per person; $30,000 per accident) for personal injury
Therefore, evaluate the amount of automobile insurance you carry in light of several factors, including your assets, the age, depreciation and make of your car, your age and driving habits and those of others on your policy, the distance of your commute, and even your personal health
Insurance Policies Are Legal Contracts Insurance policies are contracts that should be reviewed and amended with your agent when your life circumstances warrant a change.
insurance, among other considerations. Determine what financial impact out-of-pocket expenses might have in non-accident related incidents, such as, if your vehicle is stolen or vandalized, and the added expense of a rental car if yours needs repair. Depending on your circumstances and your insurance carrier, the costs to provide this extra protection may be minimal.
access to your car during the academic year.
The Bottom Line The purpose of car insurance is to protect you, your loved ones, and your assets from a disaster that could have devastating implications both in the short and long term. Because so many factors influence the amount of coverage necessary for you individually, it is important to discuss your specific needs with your agent and/ or a knowledgeable personal injury attorney. Given what is at stake, don’t you want to get it right?
How You Can Save Money Surprisingly, a review might uncover ways to save money, too. For example, you might be able to decrease your premium for collision insurance, depending on the age and condition of your car. If you have changed jobs and your commute is shorter, lessening the annual number of miles you drive should result in a savings as well. If you have married or moved, these life changes might translate into lowered premiums. Additionally, you may qualify for a discount through some insurers if a young driver under your policy is attending college away from home and does not have

Bill and his wife Janis started their local Tailored Living franchise in January 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native and is returning to her family and hometown after nearly four decades in Washington, DC and State College, PA. Bill made a promise to Janis when his career moved them to Penn State that they would retire to Lewes and here they are. Bill is originally from Pennsylvania and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State. He went to work for the Navy in Annapolis. He met Janis in 1981 through mutual friends and they married in Georgetown in 1982. They raised two beautiful children, Alex and Abby, mostly thanks to Janis’ loving care as a stay-at-home mom. Bill later attended the University of Michigan and earned two masters degrees in engineering. He continued his career working in research and development management for the Office of Naval Research first as a government employee then as a Penn State employee. In 2000 he started a wireless sensor business to develop the products he had been researching for 20+ years. He sold that business in 2012. In fall of 2013, he heard about Tailored Living on XM radio and started his “retirement job”. Tailored Living allows him to pursue his love of woodworking and be an entrepreneur. Our objective is to help you organize your home for efficiency and style. Our process starts with a consultation where we work together to find the places where organization and “everything in its place” will help you find more time for family and other activities you love. Our products are only the means to that end. We offer closet systems, garage cabinets, garage floor coatings, home offices, pantries, laundry rooms, and mud rooms, and Murphy Beds! You know you need some of everything!
Karen is a local. She is a Beebe baby who grew up in Dewey Beach at her family’s motel business on Van Dyke Street. She could swim at age 2 in the motel pool. Her parents met at Rehoboth High, and she and her brother went to Cape Henlopen High School (class of 1983). The Vignola’s were a lifeguard and football family. Karen has an AA from University of Delaware and a BS in Human Resources from Wilmington University. For 7 years she followed a path as a floral designer. She then went into retail management (ladies clothing) for 7 more years. It was in 2003 that Karen joined Ron Simmons to build Patio Systems into the business it is today. As Operations Manager, she oversees the staff of the largest Craftbilt shade products dealer in the nation. A local Sunspace Modular Enclosures dealer as well, Patio Systems keeps Karen and her staff busy. Karen still designs. She loves going to the park and looking out over the point, and quiet time with her pets.
Ron Simmons Ron is the owner of Patio Systems in Lewes Delaware, a local awning and sunroom Company since 2001. He is responsible for meeting with homeowners to determine their needs and managing his staff of 12 employees including 8 carpenters and installers. In his late teens Ron owned an ice cream and Italian ice business with retail vending trucks then purchased an Italian ice factory in Smyrna. Living in Wilmington for 20 years he began in the window and siding business in 1979, which evolved into offering full remodeling services to homeowners. Ya’nelle, a native of the City of Milford, is the office manager for SolarCity, located in Seaford, DE. A graduate of Sussex Technical High School class of 2000 and a B.S. in Marketing recipient from Johnson & Wales University. After spending 12 years in the beautiful city of Miami as a Post-Secondary Education professional, she returned to her hometown of Milford. Ya’nelle joined the SolarCity family in April of 2014 as the Office Manager to new business in Seaford. She assisted the Regional Operations Manager, along with their team of Electricians, Installers, Site Surveyors, Permit Coordinator, and Sales Team with the record breaking installs for SolarCity. When Ya’nelle joined SolarCity there were less than 25 employees, today the Seaford office employs over 60 employees, which includes 11 veterans. Having little knowledge of the construction industry, she was ready to roll up her sleeves and apply her prior knowledge and experience in PR, accounting, management, budget/planning, event planning, and critical thinking to her current role as an office manager to assist SolarCity to become a positive influence in our local communities. Ya’nelle is very passionate about her role in SolarCity and has no regrets about her “slight” change in career. As her one year anniversary with SolarCity approaches, she is looking forward to another great year of providing our communities with clean energy. Even though Ya’nelle is no longer working in the educational field, she still is a believer in education. She is currently working on her M.A. in History, and will be a candidate for graduation in 2016. She is a first generation college graduate, but credits all of her successes to her family, who taught her there is no limit to what one can, do.
Gary Chorman is owner of Millman’s Appliances, Lewes, Delaware. Once a franchise Montgomery Wards store, it became Millman’s in 1986. At that time it was small with only three employees. Within 24 months, they had expanded operations adding brands and associates. The
HOT Deck Solution
In the mid-90s decks started to become a desirable lifestyle upgrade as many homeowners began to have them built. Today, decks, concrete or hardscape patios have become a “standard feature” on the many homes being built. Although a deck, or patio, is a great place to relax in the gentle weather of spring and fall, unfortunately in summer, unless you’re sunbathing, most folks find that the deck is just too darn hot to endure. The result is that an investment of several thousand dollars may only pay off for a few short months each year. Many homeowners have sought to solve the problem with an umbrella, portable tent, or may even decide to build a roof or a complete enclosure over the deck or patio. Umbrellas let the sun chase you around and then blow away before you can fold them down. Stationary roofs are costly, block your view and darken the indoors permanently.
There is a more useful and practical solution – the motorized retractable lateral arm awning, which has been used in Europe for decades due to their much greater cost of air conditioning. An affordable alternative, retractable awnings are there when you need shade and gone when you want sunlight and winter solar gain.
In recent years these gorgeous motorized awnings have become popular here in the US and domestic fabricators now assemble the best awnings from European components. The retractable awning industry is growing tremendously each year and now offerings include retractable fabric window or porch droparm awnings, vertical or horizontal solar shades, and retractable canopy structures. When selecting an awning in this coastal area, you should be aware that unpredictable high winds and storms, as well as the deteriorating effect of salt air are factors to keep in mind. While automatic wind sensor control systems are available, the best protection for your investment is to remember to use it sensibly. If you are
comfortable under the awning, then it will usually be alright, as they are rated for up to 20 mph winds and light rain usage. The last one to leave the house simply taps the remote to the retract position and the awning will safely roll in to the house wall and stop. What could be simpler? As the authorized local distributor for the award winning 68 year old Pennsylvania company, Craftbilt Manufacturing, Patio Systems offers a helpful consultation to decide which model, mounting method, dimensions, style, and fabric selections are best for your needs. At our showroom in Lewes, you can test working models in four styles of patio awnings or look at other types of shade products for all applications.

Home & Garden Comfortably enjoy the outdoors – Enclose your screen porch! It’s getting cooler now and you you can enjoy your back yard and may be battening down the your view. Today’s enclosure systems can be more sophisticated in terms hatches of your screen porch. Homeowners are familiar with the popular sunroom additions on the market today, and those who have purchased one enjoy the extra living space available for family gatherings or evening relaxation as well as high return on investment value. However did you know that your existing screen porch can be enclosed as well? Many of today’s homes have decks or are now often being built with screen porches as a standard feature. Exposed to the elements, decks and patios are often simply too hot or too cold to use much of the year. Screen porches offer shade and some bug protection, but summer heat, dirt, rain, and winter cold with snow and ice again restrict comfortable usage to a short while out of the year. Studies and testimonials indicate that a sunroom addition, or conversion of an existing porch, is very likely to become the most enjoyed and well used room in the house. They offer protection from bugs, dirt, pollen and bad weather while preserving the breezy outdoor feel of a deck or patio. Sunrooms maximize the seasons so
of thermal efficiency and ultraviolet protection.
The building industry is strongly committed toward pre-fabricated, panelized, or modular enclosure systems. This is due to the many advantages of making the product indoors in a controlled environment, to close tolerances, using modern equipment and techniques. The jobsite work is greatly reduced for a quick installation to eliminate the stress and mess of a stick framed construction project at your home. They are built in days rather than months. While all factory made sunroom additions offer a degree of standardized quality control, there are so many variations of the old 60’s Florida room, that it must be extremely confusing to a homeowner to select the best product for your money. Inexpensive aluminum screen or glass enclosures may install quicker and have less maintenance than a stick built addition, but they conduct heat and cold, the finish can scratch or the kick-panels can easily dent. Better rooms with aluminum structure are now being built by many fabricators
using vinyl clad insulated panels and powder coat finishes (like a car) for added durability. The best have thermally broken wall frames, insulated foam core kick-panels and can be purchased with insulated UV blocking glass. North America’s fastest growing sunroom and window company, Sunspace Sunrooms has made it easy to select from their state of the art hybrid enclosures with residential aluminum and vinyl products. They offer glass slider systems, 4-track vinyl-pane enclosures, traditional aluminum or glass railings, patio covers and the new translucent acrylic roof system.

Warning Signs of Potential Electrical Hazards

Like other parts of your home, electrical systems age and wear out over time. Loose connections, overloaded outlets and frayed wires can arc and spark a fire or cause accidental electrocution. Get help from a qualified electrician if any of the following warning signs occur: • Circuit breakers or fuses need frequent resetting or replacements. • Handling a light switch, cord, or plug results in an electrical shock. • Plugs won’t stay securely in outlets and receptacles. • Lights flicker or dim frequently. • The picture on your television shrinks unexpectedly. • An unusual buzzing or humming sound comes from the electrical system. • Plugs, cords or outlet covers are hot to the touch. • Wiring gives off a burning odor.
Protection from Arcing and Ground Faults
Outdated wiring, outlets and circuit breakers can cause unintentional arcs or electrical shocks. Modern
technologies like arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) and ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) offer solutions. AFCIs can differentiate between arcs and a normal discharge of electricity for better fire protection. Installed either on a circuit breaker or directly into an outlet, GFCIs prevent electricity from connecting with a grounded surface and causing an electrical shock. A qualified electrician can ensure that these technologies are installed properly.
How Old Is Your Home?
Studies conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that most of the conditions that caused home electrical fires could have been detected by a professional. Most households in Delaware and Maryland have increased their need for electricity significantly over the last decade, and our preventive electrical services like a panel inspection can ensure that your system is equipped to handle the higher load safely.

Home & Garden Springtime! A Great Time to De-Clutter Your Life I’m writing this during the late January Blizzard that dumped feet of snow up and down the eastern seaboard! It is hard to believe that spring will be here soon and we’ll be rewarded for soldiering through this brutal winter! By the time you are reading this the weather will be warming up and our thoughts will be turning from inside to outside. It’s a great time to take control of the stuff in our lives and turn our garage into a beautiful and organized storage space! Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach works with you to design your garage and the rest of your home to suit your lifestyle. We provide and install unmatched products to make the dream a reality. In this issue we are focused on garages, but we offer solutions for your entire home – closets, laundry, pantry, Murphy beds, and home offices. Tall, vertical garage storage cabinets make maximum use of available space, providing room to store everything in the garage so anything you need is quick and easy to find. You can neatly store household goods, toys, camping gear, tools, seasonal decorations and clothes on sturdy shelves behind closed doors or on open shelves. If your family enjoys sports, Gridwall wall storage systems can hang and store skis, surf boards, kayaks, fishing poles, baseball bats, and more with specially designed hooks and racks. Add-on baskets and shelves hold accessories like masks, gloves and balls so everything you need for your favorite sport is right at hand. Low-level hooks and baskets allow little ones to retrieve and put away their own gear.
Bill and Janis Nickerson opened Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach in early 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native and this completes a commitment Bill made 20 years ago to retire to Sussex County. The Tailored Living franchise allows Bill to pursue his two passions woodworking and entrepreneurship. It has been an exciting year completing many garage, home office, Murphy bed, and closets in and around DelMarVa. We are looking forward to more in 2015. Let us design a solution for you!
Overhead storage racks capture valuable vertical space that can be used for storing large items and/or seasonal needs. In spring, put winter items overhead, then swap out when the seasons change to keep the appropriate items close at hand and easily accessible. Keep home maintenance tools on Gridwall Racks or Slatwall, organized according to use or season, such as gardening and carpentry tools. A sealed garage floor helps to repel cold and moisture. Tailored Living’s PremierOne® garage floor coatings will protect your garage floor and add beauty and value to your home. Our exclusive industrial-grade hybrid polymer floor coatings resist chipping, cracking and peeling. The hard, glossy finish repels water, mud, snow and ice, and automotive fluids, so anything your family tracks in can be quickly and easily wiped up. PremierFlex™ flexible garage floor tiles create a non-slip, commercial-tough surface from interlocking, open weave tiles that are comfortable to walk on and easy clean with a unique “flow through” design. Eighteen tile color choices allow you to create a custom floor to match your car, your favorite team’s logo or to just express yourself. While we are at it, don’t forget to let us organize your closets, pantries, and home office! Our motto is: Your Space. Defined. We work with you to maximize the utility and style of your home so you can regain time for the things you enjoy. www.tailoredliving.com/RehobothBeach

Welcome to the largest appliance selection in the shore area.
Featuring over 50 brands from all over the world all here nestled into our quaint country location. We have just relocated in the recent months from the busy Highway one location that we started and operated at since 1969. The move was so bitter sweet for the staff and I but sweet from the aspect that we are out in the country just three miles west of Route one in the Coolspring area. The new location features a bright well stocked showroom that is just charming most consumers say when they come in to shop for their new appliances. The showroom features hundreds of pieces of the markets best appliances under a well lit copper colored ceiling and is further complimented by old country plank pine flooring that is marveled at constantly and remarked upon by many.
We service what we sell with factory trained service technicians and also offer you our consumer a free ten year major component warranty on every new unit that we sell to you and your family. Our prices are very competitive and often are lower than the National competition with all the value added services and rebates that we have to offer which are exclusive to our business. We also have a used appliance donation program that we proudly started about twelve years ago which helps truly deserving members of community with a free used appliance delivered and installed in their homes. Such members who have received them in the past have been, but not limited to: Deployed military families, Disabled Veterans, Hospice and Cancer patients, Widows on very limited income, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Easter Seals, Burned out families, Single mother homes, Rehabilitation centers, Shelters, and the list goes on and on. We care about our community at Millman’s Appliances!
Why should you consider shopping at Millman’s Appliances is the question we like to answer above all others. Our showroom never closes at Millman’s Appliances with what is classified as a state of When shopping locally for your appliances we ask for you to consider our appliance store as we support over two dozen local charities each year. Shopping locally means that your money stays local in our community and is spent within the community according to our local bank over six times before it finds its way out of our community. When dollars are spent at box stores the money is picked by amoured truck and goes directly to a location far away from here doing absolutely nothing for our local citizens. We also hire and employ local associates for our business and I am proud to say our associates and their family members are integral part of our business, all 53 of them rely on us each day for employment and their financial well being.

TESTIMONIAL I not only got a new granite kitchen counter top from Ancient Art Stone, to complete the kitchen I purchased new appliances from Millman’s Appliances in Lewes, Delaware. The major differences from the big department stores like Lowes and Home Depot is SERVICE. Their showroom gave us so many different selections to choose from. The personal touch of their guidance’s and step-by-step knowledge of the products fit into our home perfectly. Each piece is delivered and placed in your home by experts, right down to instructions on how to use and care for each product. We are happy that we selected this quality company.

Why Vented Crawlspaces Can Make Humidity Worse.
Venting a crawlspace will either add moisture to, or remove moisture from, a crawlspace depending on the moisture content of the ventilation air compared to the desired conditions of the crawlspace. Venting with dry air reduces moisture levels in the space, while venting with moist air contributes moisture. It is false to assume that venting will

The Award goes to...…
These days there are so many choices for window coverings that it can be a daunting task to just figure out what products that you may want to go with. I came up with some silly awards to point out why some of the more popular window coverings really shine.......... The “Easy Peasy” award goes to Plantation Shutters. The easiest window coverings that I have ever had have been shutters. I have a divider bar where my window sashes meet that separate the top louvers from the bottom. We mostly leave the bottom louvers shut for privacy and the tops open to see out and let light in, unless sleeping in is possible of course. The configuration is so useful that we rarely even have to touch them. There are no strings to fool with and the larger louver sizes that are popular today make them super easy to clean. There are also many different ways to mount shutters so you can have a shutter that looks great but still be able to tilt your window in for cleaning. They are often a good answer to a tough situations like circle windows, arches, doors with glass and sidelights next to doors that are too narrow for many other window coverings. The “Express Yourself” award goes to Roman Shades. Whether your looking for solids, prints, stripes or something in between, your largest selection of fabrics are going to be found in roman shades more so than any other shade or blind. Even the popular product known as the woven wood is just a roman shade made out of natural and renewable woven materials such as reeds, grasses, and others fibrous materials found in nature. There are even different styles of roman shades within the category itself that have varying degrees of what I can only refer to as poofiness. The “Snug as Bug” award goes to the Honeycomb Shade. Have you ever felt a cold spot near a window? Most people have and that’s because windows and doors are the weak points when it comes to losing our heating and cooling energy. As much as 80% of our homes lost energy leaves through the windows and doors. Honeycomb shades are widely known as the most insulating shade or blind available due to their makeup. The honeycombing creates pockets of air which are great insulators. The “Workhorse” award goes to Wood and Faux Wood Blinds. I always refer to faux wood and wood blinds as the best value out there for window coverings. You really do get a lot for your dollar. They have been around for a really long time and you will see more of this type of window covering than any other. Not only do they give you great light control and privacy they go with just about any motif and never seem to go out of style. The “Stay Classy” award goes to the Silhouette by Hunter Douglas. Hunter Douglas makes quite a few truly elegant shades and one of their best is the silhouette. It is a shade that has been one of their most popular for over 20 years. It provides you with the soft look of a shade while giving you the light control of a wood blind. The sheers give you daytime privacy while still letting you view the outdoors and at night you just rotate the fabric veins closed for total privacy. There are choices of vein size, lifting mechanisms, and fabrics that range from neutral to radiant.
Give us a call today to set up your free in-home consultation and let us bring the samples to you or stop by the showroom to view some of these award winning window coverings for yourself.

Finding the Right Fabricator
BY MATTHEW CARRICO, OPERATIONS MANAGER
In the not too distant past, when we discovered a need to make a purchase we sought out a credible professional that would be able to produce what we were looking for and, more importantly, make suggestions for alterations that would directly address our specific need motivating us to make the investment in the first place. This would ensure that all our needs were addressed and ultimately guaranteed that we were getting the best possible product for our intended uses. With the conquest of the large, corporate-structured, mega businesses that are slowly taking over our towns, it’s not just the look of our shopping centers that are changing. What’s also changing is how we as consumers approach purchasing goods and services. When we see an advertisement offering a product, or our friends show us a new gadget they’ve bought, we expect when we decide to procure that good or service that we will be receiving an identical product “out of the box”. Whether the purchase is made at the same store, or many states away, we can expect what we are investing in to look and function the same way we had observed in the original. This creates a buying culture where the goods and services we are acquiring are limited to what we “see on the shelf” or what we are told will work well for us simply because it claims it worked well for thousands of others before us. Streamlining goods and services has created many benefits that all of us have experienced. The mass production processes of many businesses allow for a seemingly endless supply of merchandise at much lower prices than when things were crafted using less efficient methods. However, most of these products are designed with a “one size fits all” mentality. In a way, this makes us feel the need to conform to using what is available as opposed to something that has been designed with our specific needs in mind. Stone fabricators come in many different sizes and specialties based on their company focus or mission. There are plenty of fabricators out there that operate with that streamline mindset. Their focus is production volume and it allows them to deliver a more cost effective product in a short period of time. In order to achieve these quick turnaround times it is imperative to simplify the sales, production, and installation portions of the project. This is done by limiting a customer’s material selections, edge options, the number and placement of seams, as well as possibly outsourcing the fabrication and/or installation portions of the project. By reducing the numbers of variances they could encounter on a project it creates more of an assembly line structure and minimizes potential mistakes from occurring by having their employees perform similar, if not the same, type of work each day. If you are on a limited budget, have flexible expectations for the end result of the project, or have a very short timeline in which to get your project accomplished, these types of fabricators will be well suited for your needs. However, if you have a strict criterion that you are committed to, be it design quality or material type, you will almost certainly have an unfavorable experience with a fabricator that is not focused on providing the full gamut of options available. The other side of the industry contains your fabricators that are focused on providing the highest quality stonework that they can. They view each job as an opportunity to deliver a project that is as unique and spectacular as their skills allow. These fabricators will typically work with all types of materials from granite to onyx, provide many more customizable options in design, and employ both the fabrication and installation groups to better control the quality of the final product. The key to providing this service well requires these fabricators to not only understand the limits of their team, but to be able to properly communicate with their customers on what they can realistically manufacture that will meet, if not exceed, their expectations. This is Ancient Art Stone’s approach to designing, fabricating, and installing the custom stonework that we produce for our patrons and has been one of the largest contributors to the new levels of professional success that we’ve achieved this past year.
PUBLISHER’S TESTIMONIAL After 50 years of marriage and having owned 32 houses both as investments and family homes, I can honestly say that I can save you a great deal of kitchen remodeling stress. I was impressed from the moment I drove on to the massive display lot featuring over 500 plus different granite slabs displayed in such a way that the customer can view the beautify of each piece and their individual delicate design. Than we meet Matt, the manager. He walked us around and explained each display after finding out what my taste were and what I was trying to accomplish with the color and design for my new kitchen. From the selection process, to the in home lazier measurements, to going back to the shop to view and ok the template to insure the maximum beauty of each cut to the unbelievable precision of the cuts and fit of the granite into each corner of our now magnificent kitchen. To quote a friend who came to visit “THE MOST BEAUTIFUL KITCHEN I HAVE EVER SEEN”. Thanks Ancient Stone, Matt and their team for a job well done. We would guarantee their work in a heartbeat. 5 Reasons to “Keep It Local” in Delaware Over the past few years, Delaware has been making headlines as one of the “best places to live” and “best places to retire” due to affordable property taxes, low income tax and reasonable travel time to Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C. While these are the most talked about features that bring visitors to our state, those that live or spend a little extra time here understand why people fall in love with Delaware’s small town charm. From the beaches Lewes and Rehoboth to downtown Dover and the northern towns of the state, there are so many local shops, restaurants and events distinctive to Delaware. There are always events just around the corner like peach festivals, brewery tours, wine tastings, farmer’s market or music festival. I’m proud to be from Delaware, I love our state for many reasons and from an early age my parents instilled in me the importance of being part of the community and supporting the area where we live. When I was a kid, it meant girl scouts, clubs and school programs. Today, it means working with local non-profit organizations and showing loyalty to local companies. As a locally owned and operated small business in Delaware – we appreciate the many benefits that come with choosing local.
1. Preserve Small Town Character & History
Our beach towns are such a great testimonial to this! Delaware has the small town feel and historical character that you see on postcards with brick buildings, authentic cedar shake exteriors, lighthouses, cobblestone roads and traditional farm houses. Local business owners are more willing to keep the historical factor of the area, striving to blend in artistically with the surrounding town compared to the bigger “box” stores in hopes keep their chain of nationwide stores growing.
2. Locals Give Back To The Community
According to NFIB research, more than 9 in 10 small businesses owners give back to community. Studies show that local non-profits receive substantial continued support from locally owned and operated businesses. Local business owners care about the community they live in and often serve on boards to support numerous causes and community interests.
3. What Goes Around Comes Around
Money spent locally has 3 times the impact on a community than dollars spent in large chains or other places. The concept is fairly straightforward, if you shop at locally owned and operated businesses, your dollars provide for local families, schools, community events and non-profits.
4. Shop Local To Keep A Relevant Supply Of (Diverse) Products I love the experience that you get shopping at a local boutique. The choices always have more individuality and some even have a great story to go with it! In many cases national stores tend to stock items based on regional or national numbers instead of local demand. Local stores tend to have a broader range of choices because they cater to the needs of local people. In many cases, they will start carrying a new product per your request.
5. Mom & Pop Shops: Where Everybody Knows Your Name
Who doesn’t love the “mom and pop shop” in their town? They add an extra level of character and friendly service exclusive to their town and community. Local business owners view their work as an extension of themselves and bring an extra level of care to what they do. They get to know who you are and if there is a question or concern, you are only a few people away from the decision makers. You won’t have to submit a claim online or call a 1 800 number repeatedly to receive service. We love local so much we wrote a blog about it! I’d like to introduce our newly launched blog, Live Delaware which is dedicated to promoting the individuality, importance and perks that come with shopping, eating, playing and building local to Delaware. We have an amazing little state with a great sense of community and Live Delaware is just a reminder to keep it local in the nation’s “Small Wonder”. I hope you’ll stop by – you might find or discover a new favorite place to eat, shop or live!

SAFEHOUSE Safehouse llc is a security company in Maryland. We currently serve Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Delaware with security camera installation and in Maryland we also offer onsite property security services. Everything we do is custom. We design and install security cameras systems. We specialize in problems that plague farmers and large property owners. My name is Darrin Moore, and I am one of the owners of Safehouse llc. I have over 25 years in law enforcement. Have you ever noticed how those security camera images on the news leave a lot to be desired? Here are some things to consider before you buy a security system. First take a look at the type of camera you are buying. Would you be happy with the image in a real life situation should your home or place of business become victim to a break in, theft or armed robbery? What exactly is the difference between a 600 line analog camera and a 3.0 Megapixel IP camera? Ask questions about the image quality. What about the system software, is it easy to use, what will it do? Is the system expandable? What comes with the system? A

lot of store bought systems make big claims, and the images look great on the camera right in front of you, but dig a little deeper. What about hard drive space, is it really enough. Did you know that the wires have basic distance requirements for transmitting date? What do you do if you need to go beyond that distance? Don’t spend your hard earned dollars on a system just so you can sit back and watch yourself get robbed, without any evidence to help catch the thief or recover your belongings. Security cameras have many uses besides just serving as an eye witness for your security. Ask us how cameras can give you piece of mind, and how to get the most from your system. We understand the problems that plague farmers and large property owners as well. Rural areas offer different challenges, we understand and offer solutions. Ask about The Pivot Proxy ™ or Wire Rat ™. Education
Lifelong Learning—A Key to Successful Aging By Nora Riehl Zelluk Research on aging offers a striking model of aging as a potential time of brain health and growth. Mental stimulation and creative outlets can provide the opportunity to lead better quality lives filled with more knowledge and wisdom — and an increased capacity to contribute to society. In one study, participants in creative programs like poetry writing, painting, or choral singing classes reported better physical health than those in the control group, and reported learning “new skills and new ways of looking at and expressing things.”
“Getting creative in your later years is a self-fueling engine,” is the message of Dr. Gene Cohen, founder of George Washington University’s Center on Aging, Health & Humanities. “The more you do, the more you can do.” The University of Delaware has been a leader in lifelong learning programs that offer mental stimulation, creative outlets and social connections that positively impact quality of life. The programs feature an academic cooperative model which encourages age 50 plus members to share their expertise and talents as volunteer instructors and through committees.
An amazing variety of courses are offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at UD. Students take courses in art, history, literature, health, computers, yoga, philosophy, memoir writing, music, languages, genealogy, and much more. There are no exams or homework—just learning for the fun of it. It’s not all about the classroom, though. It is now common knowledge that robust social relationships are one of the keys to staying healthy as we age, and members often mention how highly they value the friendships developed through the program. One student commented, “There
is a youthfulness of spirit here that is palpable-- a joie de vivre that you cannot believe.” Osher Lifelong Learning programs are located at Arsht Hall on the UD Wilmington Campus at 2700 Pennsylvania Avenue; at the Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Avenue in Dover; at the Fred Thomas Building, 520 Dupont Avenue in Lewes; and in Ocean View. Nora Riehl Zelluk is the web/communications coordinator for Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Delaware.
Time to explore subjects you haven’t had time to pursue, time to delve into your interests, time to chase your dreams. Explore the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, offering just-for-the-joy-of-it learning in Lewes, Ocean View, Dover and Wilmington. Or take a college class in Newark… even pursue a degree.
You’ve got the interest. We’ve got the education.
UD is for you!

service is huge, especially when you are dealing with such the sensitive issue as a women’s body being exposed to the general population, not fully clothed. This past Thanksgiving I had received a card in the mail. I would like to share it with you all because it sums up why I love what I do and why I love my all my royal customers and truly appreciate each and everyone of them. I know Miss Carol won’t mind me sharing...
all...
Dear Donna, This note is extremely belated, but since this is the season for giving thanks I really wanted to write you. Thank you so much for the time you took with Susan and me back in the beginning oft the summer. Buying a bathing suit was almost impossible for both of us, and for the first time, you made it both productive and fun. Then you added alterations and door-to-door delivery, we couldn’t have asked for more. In addition to the service, it was so nice to have such a selection of suits. We have recommended your shop to a number of people from this area who vacation at the Delaware beaches. Thanks again for your help, Happy Thanksgiving! -Carol

Step 1: Free solar consultation
Every solar power project starts with a quick conversation to see if solar is right for you. We’ll discuss your energy use and take a look at your roof using satellite imaging. We’ll prepare a free customized quote if everything looks good. It includes all of your options and projects your energy savings for the next 20 years.
Step 2: Sign your agreement
Your personalized agreement locks in your solar energy cost for the next 20 years. You’ll find it and the most important details of the agreement right on the front page. There are no hidden fees, but you’ll find plenty of guarantees and warranties that protect you and your home.
Step 3: Solar panel system design
One of our Site Surveyors will visit within days of the solar consultation to take a closer look at your roof and take measurements. Once we have the measurements, our expert engineers will design a solar power system based on your home’s dimensions and your energy needs.
Our contracts are an open book
They’re available for anyone to review. It’s all part of being open and transparent. You won’t find hidden solar costs, but you will find lots of provisions that safeguard you and your home. • Locked-in rates–You’ll know how much you’ll pay for your solar energy this year, next year and beyond. • Home protection guarantee–We take responsibility for restoring your roof in case of any damage that might occur during your system installation or removal. • Options for moving or selling your home–We give you all of your options upfront so that you can plan ahead.

We Do Everything In-House
We want everything to go right on every solar energy installation. That’s why we only hire and train the best in the business. We take care of every aspect of your project ourselves including financing, design, permits and installation. That means that you’ll only have one team and one number to call if you have any questions before, during or after your solar power installation. We’re backed by billions We have changed the energy industry with the strong support of partners including Goldman Sachs, Honda, Google, US Bank, Bank of America and others who have funded over $3.5 billion in solar projects with us. They know that clean, more affordable solar power is the bright solution for homeowners, their investors, the environment and the future.
Step 4: 1-day installation
Most solar panel system installations take only a single day. We’ll find a day that works best for you. We also take care of all of the permits and inspections. All you have to do is watch it all come together.
Step 5: Turn on the power!
Here’s the best part. Once the utility company gives approval, you get to flip the switch to start generating your own clean, more affordable energy.
What does solar energy cost?
Today, solar energy costs less than traditional power in many markets. We can even install a solar power system on your home with little to no upfront costs. Chances are we have a solar energy financing option that works for you.

Rehoboth Car Wash By: Chris Dispoto We are certainly receiving our share of winter wrath here at the beach. Salt and sand on every road from curb to curb helps make it safe for travel, but what a mess it makes of our cars. This mess not only looks terrible, it is harmful to your vehicle. The white coating of salt on the paint you see also coats the undercarriage of your car. If this corrosive coating is not removed in a timely manner, it will certainly plague you in the future. Lucky for everyone, Rehoboth Car Wash offers an undercarriage wash with every Deluxe or Ultimate Wash Package. This service safely removes the salt and sand from the bottom of your car. It is also a good time of the year to book your Spring detailing appointment. March and April are our busiest months in the detail bay. With winter behind us and summer in front of us that once a year service will be much appreciated by your hard working vehicle. For an estimate or detailing, stop by the car wash anytime. Rehoboth Car Wash is located on the Route 1 service road at Rehoboth Avenue. Winter hours are 8a.m. to 5p.m. everyday, weather permitting. For more information call 302227-6177.

Business Women Publishing Entrepreneurs Wanted Pamela J. Rizzo
Lynn K. Wolf
Thirteen years ago I had never even heard of the Women’s Journal, and today I can honestly say the Women’s Journal most definitely changed my life. I had always made good money with my different business ventures, but the Women’s Journal has given me the freedom to control my own financial life, and also have the freedom to enjoy my family. I took a concept and gave it my own touch, and with hard work and consistently following the concept that I was trained in I have built an extremely successful paper.
Robin Coppinger I have been the owner of the Bucks County Women’s Journal for 7 years. It has been a pleasure to be part of the National Women’s Journal family. I have enjoyed publishing the paper, and have had a rewarding and successful career. I also appreciate the continued help and support I have received from both Bob Kapke and other owners over the years. I look forward to working with Bob for many years to come.
With the experience of publishing nine different County Woman publications, I can confidently inform you that this is one of the most exciting, rewarding, and successful business ventures for women entrepreneurs in any part of the nation. I originally born and raised in Minnesota and I have lived on the West Coast and the East Coast and many states in between. Some of my past careers include being a National Insurance Account Executive, Retail Operations Manager, Certified New Jersey Teacher and Teacher of the Year, but of these, I have being a County Woman Publisher to be the most gratifying on many levels. I guarantee that you will meet many incredible business owners and community leaders. Your publication will be the critical component in helping to launch a new business and/or successfully grown an existing business. The personal rewards are endless.
Linda Hunsicker Publishing three Women’s Journals is very rewarding and fits with my high energy lifestyle. It allows me to be my own boss, be creative and work with the public. Recently, I opened the Finger Lakes Woman and it has been very well received. Now, I can go to my vacation home in upstate NY, make money and be respected and recognized as a local business woman with a great educational publication.
Celeste Kline Purchasing the Women’s Journal has been the best decision I have ever made. Not only giving me financial freedom, but allowing me to make my own schedule and my own business decisions. I only wish I had done it sooner.
Christie Cook The Women’s Journal has been an incredibly rewarding business venture for me. As the publisher for the Chesterfield Women’s Journal, I contribute to the growth of my Contributor’s businesses, and help women, in my Journal community, make wiser choices. I have found a new love in the Women’s Journal, building something that will both impact businesses and educate women, while creating a legacy for my daughter. The support and mentoring, that I have been blessed to have, from some of the most successful publishers in the Journal syndicate, has helped me grow and develop my business. The support and guidance has been consistent from the moment I made the decision to become a publisher. I love what I do, and I will continue to build and grow my business as a publisher of the Women’s Journal.
Dorri C. Scott Becoming a Publisher has been a dream come true for me. Always a writer, I am an educator and continue teaching as a college Professor. Every two months, I “Give birth and deliver a new child” – my magazines in 2 counties. YES! I love what I do and am growing. The opportunity has been lucrative though the learning curve has been keen, the support from Bob Kapke has been priceless. Passionate about what I do, over the past 18 months I have met, connected and helped so many people. The powerful resource is one that I highly recommend if you want to work hard, stay focused and make money too. Have the heart and work ethic to do something for both you and others? I highly recommend that you take the step and join a phenomenal group of publisher/owners who are happy going to work every day. Do it and don’t look back!
Tara Pannell Being a part of the Women’s newspaper business has changed my life. I’ve always wanted to own a magazine and The Women’s Journal helped my dream come to life.
