Is There a Link Between My Oral Health and My Overall Health?

The Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health states that good oral health is essential to good general health. And specifically for women, a growing body of research has linked gum disease to a variety of health problems that affect women. Because gum disease is a bacterial infection, it can enter the bloodstream and may be a factor in causing other health complications:

• Heart disease: People with gum

disease may be more at risk for heart disease and have nearly twice the risk of having a fatal heart attack. Heart disease is also the number one killer of American women.1 • Stroke: One study found a casual relationship of oral infections as a risk factor for stroke.

Bacteria that grow in the oral cavity can travel to the lungs causing respiratory disease such as pneumonia - especially in people with gum disease.

• Pregnancy outcomes:

Pregnant women who have gum disease may be more likely to have a baby born too early or too small. Gum disease may also trigger increased levels of biological fluids that induce labor.

Perimenopause: A Second Puberty?

BY ANGELA CASWELL-MONACK, DO As an OBGYN, I love taking care of women at every stage of life, but perimenopause (the period of about ten years leading up to menopause) just might be my favorite.

Menopause is defined as 1 year without a menstrual period. The average age of menopause in the United States is about 51.5 years, and the timing is often similar between mother and daughter, older sister and younger sister. Some things can make the menopausal transition happen sooner such as smoking and particular chemotherapy drugs. But, menopause is a natural biological process.

Though we talk about menopause in terms of the uterus (menstrual bleeding,) menopausal changes and symptoms are all a function of your ovarian hormones (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.)

Menopause marks the end of your menstrual cycles and your fertility as the ovaries quiesce (become quiet and stop ovulating), but it does not just happen overnight. (Except, of course, for women who have had surgical removal of their ovaries and uterus prior to their natural menopause.)

So, back to perimenopause. Usually, perimenopause begins in the early 40s but sometimes starts in the late 30s. The ovaries become erratic and start to sputter.

At first, you may miss a period here or there, and your periods may change in nature and become heavier or longer.

Your hormones start to go a little berserk; it may remind you of the hormonal rollercoaster of puberty. Some women experience hot flashes, fatigue, mood swings, trouble sleeping, changes in sex drive, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, acne, thinning hair, weight gain, increase in facial hair, changes in fingernails, night sweats, difficulty concentrating, or forgetfulness. No two women will

have the same exact perimenopause experience. But, we all have a lot in common. In times past, no one really talked about “the change of life,” but now, there is even an off-broadway production about it, “Menopause, The Musical.” Some women only have a couple years of symptoms, others have 12 or more years.

This all sounds so terrible, so why do I like this season of a woman’s life?

First, because this is perhaps the most empowered time in a woman’s life.

Often, a woman has spent her whole adult life up to this point taking care of other people- her children, her husband or partner, her parents, her friends. Not to say that caring for your loved ones is not rewarding, but many women put themselves on the back burner, so to speak, because there is always another priority-family, relationships, work, money, etc. The typical woman juggles so many things that her own physical and emotional needs get minimized. Every day, I take care of women who have not seen a gynecologist in 20 years because they were just too busy; granted, going to the gynecologist is not something the average woman wants to do. But what I love about the perimenopausal woman is that she is just plain human. By this age, she has enough life experience to stand up for herself, speak her mind, and not worry what other people will think. By the time I see her in my office, she is ready to make herself a priority, too.

The second reason I love perimenopause is because it is medically fascinating. The symptoms of menopause need to be sorted out from other medical conditions such as thyroid disorder, unexpected pregnancy, diabetes, uterine or ovarian cancer, mood disorders, etc. This type of investigation is part of why I became a doctor. Sometimes, the evaluation includes just taking a thorough history, and sometimes blood tests, hormone tests, ultrasound of the pelvis, biopsies or other tests might be needed. But, once everything else is ruled out, treatment can be tailored to the particular woman’s perimenopause concerns. There are

postmenopausal. On one hand, we should embrace the menopausal transition as a natural part of life, and on the other hand, we seriously need to figure out how to help women get through it and give them more options.

Ten Common Myths about Cardiovascular Disease

He completed his post-graduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia with a residency in internal medicine (1991-1994), Chief Medical Resident (1994-1995), and cardiology fellowship (1995-1998).

Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July 1998. He has served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Dr. Rosa is trained in non-invasive cardiology, Nuclear Transesopageal Echocardiograms, as well as invasive diagnostic procedures and pacemaker implantations.

There are a number of popular beliefs out there about your cardiovascular health that might be misleading and dangerous when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Here are some of the most common ones: 1. “Heart disease runs in my family, so it’s only a matter of time until I get it too” No question there is a strong genetic component to heart disease, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it.

On the contrary, a strong and consistent set of measures should be taken early to dramatically reduce your risk: stay active, don’t smoke, strict cholesterol control, treat diabetes and hypertension, reduce salt intake, change and stay on a healthy diet.

2. Chest pain is a sure sign of a heart attack”. Not quite. Chest pain remains the most common symptom of a heart attack, but there are many others just as important that can be subtle: Shortness of breath,

8. “ I stopped my medicines because my blood pressure was normal, or my cholesterol was normal or I feel good now”. Very often people assume that once your blood pressure and cholesterol reach the recommended levels, then the job is done and the medications are no longer needed.

The reality is these are chronic problems and need maintenance and continued treatment. Please consult with your doctor before stoping any medication on your own. Feeling better is fine, but it might be because you have been on that treatment in the first place. If you are having trouble affording medications, talk to your doctor to be switched to a less expensive alternative or they may have certain discount programs available to you.

4. “ I am too young to worry about heart disease”. An early adoption of a healthy life style will have a tremendous impact in the prevention of cardiovascular disease later on. The heart attack someone might have in their 40’s or 50’s began as a process of plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries and others in childhood and adolescent years. So, educating your children for life long healthy living is perhaps the most important legacy.

9. “Aspirin is a good blood thinner to prevent strokes if you have atrial fibrillation”. This is a common one. The truth is that if you have this heart rhythm problem you are at a much higher risk for a stroke and you need to be on a true blood thinner, such as warfarin or one of the newer

agents now available on the market. Aspirin alone is not an effective treatment in this situation.

10. “Drinking a glass of wine a day reduces your risk of heart disease.” The question is -- how big is your glass of wine? The recommended amount of daily consumption of wine is 5 ounces for women and men over the age of 65. For men under age 65 they can have 2 glasses of 5 ounce each.

The standard wine glasses hold between 12-14 ounces of wine, so it is very easy to consume more than intended. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which has been studied in animals to potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, but recent research has discredited some of this claim.

The same antioxidant can be obtained from eating grapes and drinking grape juice, so wine consumption is not necessary for this potential benefit.

Just some food for thought. Maybe over a glass of red wine, or maybe not.

5. “Diabetes won’t affect my heart so long as I take my medicines”. It’s critically important to keep a very strict control of diabetes and sugar levels to reduce the risk of a heart attack and stroke. However, you still remain at high risk for those events.

Weight loss, regular exercise, smoking cessation, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol become even more important if you are also diabetic.

6. “ I will know when my blood pressure is high because I will have a headache” High blood pressure continues to be a “silent killer” and most people will have no symptoms, until it’s late and other organ systems are involved. Early detection and effective treatment of high blood pressure are absolutely critical in preventing stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney failure. Check your blood pressure regularly and discuss it with your health care provider.

7. “ Cholesterol checks are for older people”. Not exactly. The American Heart Association recommends an initial cholesterol check at age 20. Early detection and intervention are very important. If you have a very strong family history for heart disease, checking before age 20 is a good idea as well. Again a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstone of treatment.

And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas.

What are the most common areas to be treated?

Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. Pull Your Weeds, Not Your Back When Gardening!

Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. Growing your own food for health, fun and sustainability can be a fun and relaxing way of reconnecting with mother nature and with the rising cost of groceries, growing a vegetable garden can be a great way to save money on home grocery budgets. With spring in the air, you look forward to getting out in the garden but you’re not looking forward to feeling sore after all the kneeling, pulling, leaning, and twisting. After a long winter of not moving our bodies this way, it’s important to prepare your spine, joints, and muscles. But the use of hoes, trowels and weed whackers has also been sending aspiring gardeners to their local doctor of chiropractic with yard-work related muscle strains and pains.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, here are some outdoorsrelated injury statistics to consider as you pull on your gardening gloves and lace up your boots: • In 2010, more than 35,500 people injured themselves using a stepladder • More than 41,000 Americans injured themselves while gardening or using gardening equipment • More than 127,000 people were injured while operating a lawn mower.

Gardening and yard work can bring on many injuries for a variety of reasons.

Specifically, people tend to do too much too soon. Many common injuries including tendonitis, sprains, strains or fractures can be prevented with proper technique like bending at the knees when lifting instead of from the back or securing and stabilizing a ladder before climbing. These are simple precautions that are overlooked too often.

Whether you’re maintaining a vegetable garden or adorning your yard with fragrant spring flowers and bushes, caution that using this equipment can result in back and neck pain, as well as more serious muscular strains and tears if not used properly. The repetitive motion that your body undergoes when using such equipment can bring on a whole host of mechanical problems within the body. Here are some tips to help you enjoy a safe, productive day of summer landscaping: • Regardless of what piece of equipment you are using, make sure it has a strap—and that you use it. Place the strap over your head on the shoulder on the opposite side of your body from the device. This will help normalize your center of gravity.

• Be sure to switch the side on which you are operating the equipment as often as possible, and to balance the muscles being used, alternate your stance and motion frequently.

• Take frequent breaks.

• Consider electric-powered items, especially if you experience back or neck pain, as they tend to be lighter than their engine-powered counterparts.

• When picking up or putting down your equipment, be sure to bend from the knees, not at the waist.

• Keep the object close to your body as you lift, not at arm’s length. While it is critical that you operate your yard equipment safely, it is equally important that you prepare your body for the work you are about to do. To help avoid injury, be sure to include a warm-up/cool-down period that involves stretching.

Before stretching, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Breathe in and out slowly throughout each stretching exercise until the muscle is stretched to its furthest point.

At that point, hold your breath in. When you relax, breathe out. Stretch gently and smoothly. Do not bounce or jerk your body in any way and stretch as far as you can comfortably. You should not feel pain.

Following are stretches recommend for getting the most out of the time you spend in the yard: 1. Stand up and prop your heel on a back door step or stool with your knee slightly bent.

Bend forward until you feel a slight pull at the back of the thigh, called the hamstring.

You may need to stabilize yourself by holding onto a garage door handle. Hold the position for 20 seconds, then relax. Do it once more, then repeat with the other leg.

2. Stand up and put your right hand against a wall or other stable surface. Bend your left knee and grab your ankle with your left hand. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to stretch the quadricep muscle at the front of your thigh. Hold the position for 20 seconds, relax and do it again. Repeat with the other leg.

3. Weave your fingers together above your head with your palms up. Lean to one side for 10 seconds to stretch the side of your upper body, then reverse. Repeat two or three times.

4. Hug yourself. Wrap your arms around yourself after letting your breath out and rotate to one side, as far as you can go. Hold it for 10 seconds. Then reverse. Repeat two or three times.

If you find that you are still feeling sore or stiff, it is time to consider Chiropractic care.

Often times, it doesn’t matter how much you warm up and stretch; if there is an underlying spinal problem, you will eventually feel the effects of it, which means it has already done some damage to your health. Don’t wait any longer!

Women Age Differently Than Men

It is true – men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, and that does not change as they advance in years.

Women outnumber men in each age category over the age of 55. Therefore, health care for the older woman is and will be an increasing concern.

Women are survivors, and many of their health concerns relate to that fact. While older women die of the same disorders as men – heart disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and accidental injuries – older women are more likely to be afflicted with one or more chronic conditions that can often cause limitations in their lifestyles.

Incontinence is one of the most common reasons that older women are institutionalized in long-term health facilities. Osteoporosis is another serious concern that primarily affects

women as they age and can have serious consequences by increasing their chances for debilitating injuries such as hip fractures. Drug interactions and misuse involving multiple medications can cause physical or mental disorders and can aggravate pre-existing conditions.

Finally, distinguishing between depression and dementia requires testing and careful diagnosis. Depression is the most common form of mental disorder in older women. Dementia, notably Alzheimer’s disease, is a less treatable mental disorder.

When developing a home health care program for an elderly woman, it is imperative to carefully consider the individual’s needs and lifestyle requirements. For women, the emotional and psychological changes that accompany aging can make it difficult to cope. Some women may completely shut themselves away from the world as a result of poor health or some other reason. When our energy system is depleted we feel tired, we have difficulty coping and it is difficult for our immune system to function properly. Our energy may be depleted due to stress, illness, injury, grief, medical conditions, surgery, and medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. When our energy system is off balance, the energy that usually flows through and around our bodies becomes congested. One example of congested energy is pain. When a client has pain, the practitioner focuses on removing the energy congestion so that the pain level is reduced. Another example is stress. Stress may affect our body by causing muscle tightness in our necks and shoulders. We may develop a headache or experience discomfort in other parts of our body. Stress causes congestion in our energy system.

Healing Touch techniques help to relieve that congestion.

Healing Touch also promotes relaxation.

When our body relaxes, endorphins are released from the brain, which helps the muscles to relax. When the muscles relax, circulation is improved and the increased blood flow elevates oxygen levels throughout the body, which then allows nutrients to be absorbed more efficiently; enzymes are built to aid digestion, hormones are regulated, and toxins are released from the body. Dr. Goldstein is a board-certified specialist in gastroenterology/hepatology who received her medical degree from Georgetown University. HEMORRHOIDAL TREATMENT Over half the population will experience some type of hemorrhoidal problem in their lifetime. You may be suffering in silence because you are too embarrassed to discuss the problem, or worry that the cure will be more painful than the problem itself. Now, advances in medicine have made hemorrhoid treatment fast and virtually painless. Your only challenge is finding a doctor who offers the right treatment and makes you feel comfortable receiving it.

How do hemorrhoids develop?

Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and engorged veins in the anal and rectal region. They are most commonly caused by changes in frequency of bowel movements, pressure of straining and hormonal changes or pressure during pregnancy. What are the treatment options for removing hemorrhoids?

Effective hemorrhoid treatment depends on your specific medical condition. No doctor should recommend a solution without first doing an exam

to rule out other potential causes of rectal pain or bleeding.

Once you have been diagnosed with hemorrhoids, you will have different options to choose from, depending on the severity of your case. You may get adequate relief from increasing fiber in your diet, taking warm sitz baths and using topical creams.

Treatment options include a variety of minimally invasive procedures that cut off blood flow to the hemorrhoid and cause it to shrink. In some cases your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue.

Paying for Long-Term Care:

Is Planning Early & Protecting My Assets Ethical?

What about planning a big family holiday dinner? Of course you are, and with great anticipation and excitement.

But what about planning for your care as you advance in age? Many of us prefer not to think about it, believing that it will somehow all work out. Consider the scenarios below that illustrate the impact of planning early for long term care versus choosing the “wait and see” approach. Based on your current plan, which outcome is yours?

The Facts

John is 69 and Mary is 66. They have been retired for several years. Recently, their oldest child asked them whether they had made any plans if one of them suddenly got sick. John and Mary had not thought much about this since both of them were in good health. However, they agreed to seek some advice to see what their options were.

John and Mary own a home and they have checking, savings and CD accounts that total $375,000. They both worked most of their adult lives, carefully watching their expenses and never spending money on extravagant items they didn’t feel they needed.

Scenario #1 – John and Mary

planning ahead. John and Mary spoke with an elder law attorney, as they knew they should update their will and powers of attorney. While there, they were surprised to learn that they could actually plan now to avoid running out of money in the future should they need long term care. They placed $225,000 and their home into an irrevocable trust, and

named their children as beneficiaries of the trust. If needed, their children would be able to take a distribution from the trust rather than using their own money for John and Mary’s needs.

They kept the remaining $150,000 in a revocable trust that John and Mary would use for their living expenses.

The $225,000 placed into the irrevocable trust would not be counted against them after 5 years, should either of them need long term care and the assistance of state benefits to pay for it.

Unfortunately, six years later Mary had a severe stroke and ended up in a nursing home. John tried caring for her at home but was simply unable to. Because they had planned ahead and had set up an irrevocable trust, John was able to keep all of the remaining cash assets in their revocable trust, and Mary was able to qualify immediately for state Medicaid benefits. The irrevocable trust (which had now grown to $240,000) remained in place but did not count against Mary since more than 5 years had passed.

John was incredibly relieved to know that he did not have to worry about paying for Mary’s care and could instead focus on visiting and providing support.

Medicaid Facts:

The Medicaid Program is funded by our federal and state governments. To receive Medicaid, an individual must meet certain requirements (such as income level), and also must go through an application process. Due to the lack of any other program in the U.S., Medicaid has, by default, become the long-term care insurance of the middle class.

To cover long term care expenses, Medicaid requires that a person liquidate all assets and spend down to $2,000.00.

With the help of elder law attorneys, people potentially needing long-term care can intentionally impoverish themselves in order to qualify for Medicaid and preserve some of their savings. This planning is done, not through exploitation of legal loopholes, but rather through strict adherence to the laws and regulations governing Medicaid.

In Summary:

It is important to plan early for the possibility of needing long term care.

ith spring just around the corner, we’re reminded to turn our clocks ahead, and to check the batteries in our smoke detectors. Many of us take advantage of milder weather to clean out the garage or to attack the overgrown hedges in the back yard with that new chain saw we received in December.

But when a rainy spring Saturday rolls around and your weekend tasks are temporarily postponed, I’d like to suggest another, very important activity to add to your seasonal “To Do” list: set aside the time to review your automobile insurance policy to be sure it is adequate and up to date.

I can hear a chorus of groans at the above advice, and I can even visualize eyeballs rolling as I write this. But – as a personal injury attorney with decades of experience dealing with insurance companies in court and around the settlement table, and as someone

Karen Vignola Truitt

Bill and his wife Janis started their local Tailored Living franchise in January 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native and is returning to her family and hometown after nearly four decades in Washington, DC and State College, PA. Bill made a promise to Janis when his career moved them to Penn State that they would retire to Lewes and here they are. Bill is originally from Pennsylvania and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State. He went to work for the Navy in Annapolis. He met Janis in 1981 through mutual friends and they married in Georgetown in 1982. They raised two beautiful children, Alex and Abby, mostly thanks to Janis’ loving care as a stay-at-home mom. Bill later attended the University of Michigan and earned two masters degrees in engineering. He continued his career working in research and development management for the Office of Naval Research first as a government employee then as a Penn State employee. In 2000 he started a wireless sensor business to develop the products he had been researching for 20+ years. He sold that business in 2012. In fall of 2013, he heard about Tailored Living on XM radio and started his “retirement job”. Tailored Living allows him to pursue his love of woodworking and be an entrepreneur. Our objective is to help you organize your home for efficiency and style. Our process starts with a consultation where we work together to find the places where organization and “everything in its place” will help you find more time for family and other activities you love. Karen is a local. She is a Beebe baby who grew up in Dewey Beach at her family’s motel business on Van Dyke Street. She could swim at age 2 in the motel pool.

Her parents met at Rehoboth High, and she and her brother went to Cape Henlopen High School (class of 1983). The Vignola’s were a lifeguard and football family.

Karen has an AA from University of Delaware and a BS in Human Resources from Wilmington University.

For 7 years she followed a path as a floral designer. She then went into retail management (ladies clothing) for 7 more years. It was in 2003 that Karen joined Ron Simmons to build Patio Systems into the business it is today.

As Operations Manager, she oversees the staff of the largest Craftbilt shade products dealer in the nation. A local Sunspace Modular Enclosures dealer as well, Patio Systems keeps Karen and her staff busy.

Karen still designs. She loves going to the park and looking out over the point, and quiet time with her pets.

Ron Simmons Ron is the owner of Patio Systems in Lewes Delaware, a local awning and sunroom Company since 2001. He is responsible for meeting with homeowners to determine their needs and managing his staff of 12 employees including 8 carpenters and installers. Ron began his studies in mechanical engineering at Penn State University main campus on a Navy ROTC scholarship but soon decided that an education in business would be more appropriate for self-employment.

In his late teens Ron owned an ice cream and Italian ice business with retail vending trucks then purchased an Italian ice factory in Smyrna. Living in Wilmington for 20 years he began in the window and siding business in 1979, which evolved into offering full remodeling services to homeowners. Ron has trained in all aspects of his business under several gurus of the industry and was trained in the sunroom industry by Dave Yoho, a leading sales consultant to Fortune 500 companies.

A resident of Sussex County since 1998, Ron’s interests have included studies of such notables as Earl Nightingale, Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, and Tom Hopkins.

Intrigued by the spirituality of Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Ram Das and Dan Millman, he strived to apply those teachings to his life. Ron enjoys ancient mysteries, the origins and cosmology of the universe, personal empowerment and the future potential of mankind.

Having traveled extensively throughout the world, he comes from an international family with his Mother and siblings being German citizens from Munich and stepfather a surgeon from India. Ron also grew up around aviation as his father was a commercial pilot flying everything from helicopters to passenger jets. As a boy, he spent summers at his father’s flight school in Pennsylvania assisting the student pilots.

His hobbies have included Tennis, skiing, building and flying RC aircraft, electronics and computer programming. Ron believes in giving back blessings to the community and supports many notable charities along with four children overseas.

Ya’nelle Powell

Ya’nelle, a native of the City of Milford, is the office manager for SolarCity, located in Seaford, DE. A graduate of Sussex Technical High School class of 2000 and a B.S. in Marketing recipient from Johnson & Wales University. After spending 12 years in the beautiful city of Miami as a Post-Secondary Education professional, she returned to her hometown of Milford.

Ya’nelle joined the SolarCity family in April of 2014 as the Office Manager to new business in Seaford. She assisted the Regional Operations Manager, along with their team of Electricians, Installers, Site Surveyors, Permit Coordinator, and Sales Team with the record breaking installs for SolarCity. When Ya’nelle joined SolarCity there were less than 25 employees, today the Seaford office employs over 60 employees, which includes 11 veterans.

Having little knowledge of the construction industry, she was ready to roll up her sleeves and apply her prior knowledge and experience in PR, accounting, management, budget/planning, event planning, and critical thinking to her current role as an office manager to assist SolarCity to become a positive influence in our local communities.

Ya’nelle is very passionate about her role in SolarCity and has no regrets about her “slight” change in career. As her one year anniversary with SolarCity approaches, she is looking forward to another great year of providing our communities with clean energy.

Even though Ya’nelle is no longer working in the educational field, she still is a believer in education. She is currently working on her M.A. in History, and will be a candidate for graduation in 2016. She is a first generation college graduate, but credits all of her successes to her family, who taught her there is no limit to what one can, do.

Gary Chorman is owner of Millman’s Appliances, Lewes, Delaware. Once a franchise Montgomery Wards store, it became Millman’s in 1986. Gary began his association with Millman’s when he was only 14 years old. He left to pursue education and experience, rising from janitor to Operations Manager of DENTSPLY, Milford.

Having attended Delaware Technical and Wilmington College, he earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees.

He returned to Millman’s and purchased it in 2003. At that time it was small with only three employees. Within 24 months, they had expanded operations adding brands and associates. They grew from just one pick up truck and a hand cart to a fleet of highly skilled installers and repair personnel complete with many equipped vehicles and into a showroom that has been called “A Boutique of Appliances”, “State of the Art Showroom” and “A True Representation of Sussex County”.

Ventilation of a crawlspace to control relative humidity only works consistently in an arid climate. Why Vented Crawlspaces Can Make Humidity Worse.

Venting a crawlspace will either add moisture to, or remove moisture from, a crawlspace depending on the moisture content of the ventilation air compared to the desired conditions of the crawlspace. The Award goes to...…

These days there are so many choices for window coverings that it can be a daunting task to just figure out what products that you may want to go with. I came up with some silly awards to point out why some of the more popular window coverings really shine..........

The “Easy Peasy” award goes to Plantation Shutters. The easiest window coverings that I have ever had have been shutters. I have a divider bar where my window sashes meet that separate the top louvers from the bottom. We mostly leave the bottom louvers shut for privacy and the tops open to see out and let light in, unless sleeping in is possible of course. The configuration is so useful that we rarely even have to touch them. There are no strings to fool with and the larger louver sizes that are popular today make them super easy to clean.

There are also many different ways to mount shutters so you can have a shutter that looks great but still be able to tilt your window in for cleaning. They are often a good answer to a tough situations like circle windows, arches, doors with glass and sidelights next to doors that are too narrow for many other window coverings.

The “Express Yourself” award goes to Roman Shades. Whether your looking for solids, prints, stripes or something in between, your largest selection of fabrics are going to be found in roman shades more so than any other shade or blind. Even the popular product known as the woven wood is just a roman shade made out of natural and renewable woven materials such as reeds, grasses, and others fibrous materials found in nature.

There are even different styles of roman shades within the category itself that have varying degrees of what I can only refer to as poofiness.

The “Snug as Bug” award goes to the Honeycomb Shade. Have you ever felt a cold spot near a window?

Most people have and that’s because windows and doors are the weak points when it comes to losing our heating and cooling energy. As much as 80% of our homes lost energy leaves through the windows and doors.

Honeycomb shades are widely known as the most insulating shade or blind available due to their makeup. The honeycombing creates pockets of air which are great insulators.

The “Workhorse” award goes to Wood and Faux Wood Blinds. I always refer to faux wood and wood blinds as the best value out there for window coverings. You really do get a lot for your dollar. They have been around for a really long time and you will see more of this type of window covering than any other. Not only do they give you great light control and privacy they go with just about any motif and never seem to go out of style.

The “Stay Classy” award goes to the Silhouette by Hunter Douglas. Hunter Douglas makes quite a few truly elegant shades and one of their best is the silhouette. It is a shade that has been one of their most popular for over 20 years. It provides you with the soft look of a shade while giving you the light control of a wood blind. The sheers give you daytime privacy while still letting you view the outdoors and at night you just rotate the fabric veins closed for total privacy. There are choices of vein size, lifting mechanisms, and fabrics that range from neutral to radiant.

Finding the Right Fabricator

In the not too distant past, when we discovered a need to make a purchase we sought out a credible professional that would be able to produce what we were looking for and, more importantly, make suggestions for alterations that would directly address our specific need motivating us to make the investment in the first place. This would ensure that all our needs were addressed and ultimately guaranteed that we were getting the best possible product for our intended uses.

With the conquest of the large, corporate-structured, mega businesses that are slowly taking over our towns, it’s not just the look of our shopping centers that are changing.

What’s also changing is how we as consumers approach purchasing goods and services.

When we see an advertisement offering a product, or our friends show us a new gadget they’ve bought, we expect when we decide to procure that good or service that we will be receiving an identical product “out of the box”. Whether the purchase is made at the same store, or many states away, we can expect what we are investing in to look and function the same way we had observed in the original. This creates a buying culture where the goods and services we are acquiring are limited to what we “see on the shelf” or what we are told will work well for us simply because it claims it worked well for thousands of others before us. Streamlining goods and services has created many benefits that all of us have experienced. The mass production processes of many businesses allow for a seemingly endless supply of merchandise at much lower prices than when things were crafted using less efficient methods. However, most of these products are designed with a “one size fits all” mentality. In a way, this makes us feel the need to conform to using what is available as opposed to something that has been designed with our specific needs in mind.

Their focus is production volume and it allows them to deliver a more cost effective product in a short period of time. In order to achieve these quick turnaround times it is imperative to simplify the sales, production, and installation portions of the project. This is done by limiting a customer’s material selections, edge options, the number and placement of seams, as well as possibly outsourcing the fabrication and/or installation portions of the project. By reducing the numbers of variances they could encounter on a project it creates more of an assembly line structure and minimizes potential mistakes from occurring by having their employees perform similar, if not the same, type of work each day. If you are on a limited budget, have flexible expectations for the end result of the project, or have a very short timeline in which to get your project accomplished, these types of fabricators will be well suited for your needs. Christina began working with Lessard Builders at a young age helping clean the office and run errands as well as other receptionist duties.

As she grew older and more familiar with the business, she took on more responsibility and worked with her father, Brian on the day to day activities. Upon graduating from Wilmington University with a BS in Finance, she assumed the role of Comptroller and gained a more comprehensive understanding of the industry from the financial aspect. Lifelong Learning—A Key to Successful Aging

By Nora Riehl Zelluk Research on aging offers a striking model of aging as a potential time of brain health and growth. Mental stimulation and creative outlets can provide the opportunity to lead better quality lives filled with more knowledge and wisdom — and an increased capacity to contribute to society.

In one study, participants in creative programs like poetry writing, painting, or choral singing classes reported better physical health than those in the control group, and reported learning “new skills and new ways of looking at and expressing things.”

“Getting creative in your later years is a self-fueling engine,” is the message of Dr. Gene Cohen, founder of George Washington University’s Center on Aging, Health & Humanities. “The more you do, the more you can do.”

The University of Delaware has been a leader in lifelong learning programs that offer mental stimulation, creative outlets and social connections that positively impact quality of life. The programs feature an academic cooperative model which encourages age 50 plus members to share their expertise and talents as volunteer instructors and through committees.

An amazing variety of courses are offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at UD. Students take courses in art, history, literature, health, computers, yoga, philosophy, memoir writing, music, languages, genealogy, and much more. There are no exams or homework—just learning for the fun of it.

It’s not all about the classroom, though. It is now common knowledge that robust social relationships are one of the keys to staying healthy as we age, and members often mention how highly they value the friendships developed through the program.

One student commented, “There

is a youthfulness of spirit here that is palpable-- a joie de vivre that you cannot believe.”

Osher Lifelong Learning programs are located at Arsht Hall on the UD Wilmington Campus at 2700 Pennsylvania Avenue; at the Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Avenue in Dover; at the Fred Thomas Building, 520 Dupont Avenue in Lewes; and in Ocean View.

Thirteen years ago I had never even heard of the Women’s Journal, and today I can honestly say the Women’s Journal most definitely changed my life. I had always made good money with my different business ventures, but the Women’s Journal has given me the freedom to control my own financial life, and also have the freedom to enjoy my family. I took a concept and gave it my own touch, and with hard work and consistently following the concept that I was trained in I have built an extremely successful paper.
