Health & Medicine WITH THE KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL BUYING CLOTHES, BACKPACKS, PAPER AND PENS, PARENTS SHOULD CONSIDER VISION AS PART OF A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR.
By: Glenn Courtney, A.B.O.C. Delaware Eye Optical Eye exams are routine for many children whose visual problems were caught early and corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses depending on their age. Early in children’s eyecare frames are designed with safety, comfort and durability in mind. Preschool, Kindergarten and grade school ages often find frames that are colorful e ible and in shapes that fit the typical narrow pupillary distances as well as having pads for the bridge of the nose that are less developed. Today’s children are more aware of style and brands they are exposed to at an early are such as afilo ids didas Lindberg Kids, Solo Bambini, Rec Specs, and Silhouette to name a few. Even though parents are responsible for paying the bill and making sure their children receive proper medical care in this case eyecare, its very important for the child to be part of the frame selection process. This will go a long way toward the child wearing and taking care of their new eyewear and overall success of the improving the child’s quality of life. The prescription is always the main consideration choosing a child’s eyewear. When selecting frames, the optician should be able to read the doctor’s prescription and have suggestions on frame styles that best fit the child but also lenses that provide safe, clear vision. Lenses depending on the prescription, can be thicker
either in the center (plus lenses) or the outer edge (minus lenses). Frame selection can cosmetically help children feel more comfortable in these cases. Frames with wider temples can hide some of the edge thickness on a minus prescription. Those with the plus lenses can benefit from having a frame where the pupil fits close to the geometric center of the frame as possible. The lens with less decentration (moving optical center) creates less thickness and better peripheral vision. There are many lens materials in the market place and each have different aspects from safety, to cosmetic, weight, clarity or specific applications that can be added. For children polycarbonate has been the standard for many years due to its characteristics of light weight, absorbing UV, thinness

and primarily safety. Its is very durable impact resistant material long prescribed for children which has its origin in industrial eyewear. Trivex is a more recent material that ualifies for children 18 and under, we feel is better than polycarbonate. The two materials have similar characteristics but Trivex is more scratch resistant and has a higher abbe value so vision is slightly better. Obviously, safety is primary for children’s eyewear along with the prescription and fashion. Eyewear today can help them through the early years when development is so critical. Sports eyewear is critical for children involved in almost any sport. Polycarbonate and Trivex can provide impact resistance from the balls or ying elbows on a basketball court for example. Liberty
optical provides an array of sport frames cushioned at the bridge and temples with wide sweeping or wrap lenses for great peripheral vison. This area of eyecare has grown and offers much more variety than in past years. Team colors, different shape designs and various temple concepts allow the wearer to customize the sport eyewear depending on what they enjoy from biking, baseball, basketball, motorcycling, shooting, to fishing and many others with eyewear that have both safety and performance. e begin fitting children with contact lenses around the age of 12 or 13 depending on the child’s personal habits and maturity. Parents are usually involved in the decision process for obvious reasons. Contact lenses require more discipline

and responsibility on the child’s part due to the health implications if directions are not followed. For those who are able to wear them successfully they offer an alternative and can help those whose prescription are burdensome due to the lens power. We offer many different alternatives from pre-school age all the way through collage age for children looking for fashion or just function. Over the years we have observed an improvement through technology both in lenses and frames providing children vision on par with adults and their needs obviously there many areas within children’s eyecare that I have not touched on. We would enjoy speaking with you about your child’s particular vision needs and the many alternatives available.

NANTICOKE JOINT CAMP PATIENT CLIMBS MT. KILIMANJARO was not the right solution for someone who was as active as King. After that, he made an appointment with his former physician, Dr. Lawrence Piccioni, to get a second opinion. n arch ing ew to Delaware and met with Dr. Piccioni. Dr. Piccioni said he was a perfect candidate for a partial knee replacement. In April, he had this surgery on his right knee. Just two weeks later he had a partial left knee replacement.

The journey took seven days and King reached the top elevation of 19,341 feet at Uhuru Peak, Tanzania, Africa’s highest peak.
“I was so bow-legged from my joints dropping that I gained an inch in height after surgery,” recalls King. “I had family members say it was an amazing difference between my first and second surgery. My knee with the procedure was straight and the knee waiting for surgery was still crooked.” “I didn’t realize how much pain I was in until after the first surgery. y knee felt so much better. was walking two hours after surgery and felt great. I was doing laps around the unit. The knee that didn’t have surgery was hurting so much more than the one that just had surgery. Everybody at the hospital—the anesthesiologists, nurses, doctors, and therapists— were all awesome. When I went through Nanticoke’s

His girlfriend, Karen, was ready to meet him at the airport with a wheelchair, but he happily said he would walk instead. At the young age of 57, King enjoys a very active life. He is retired from the City of Dover Police Department after 20 years and currently works as a ederal olice Officer with the epartment of efense in Utah. King enjoys getting outdoors and hiking the picturesque mountains of his new hometown of Saratoga Springs. In 2007, he hiked nearly 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine, completing the Appalachian Trail in just over 4 months. In 2011, he completed a cross-country bicycle ride on the TransAmerican bike route stretching from Virginia to Oregon, logging nearly 4,250 miles. King has hiked across Spain, hiked portions of the Great Wall of China, and has walked just feet away from lions on an African safari. So, Mt. Kilimanjaro was a natural thing for King to aspire to do and he was grateful to be able to do it without unnecessary pain in his knees. “I like to hike, I like to bike, I like to keep moving,” King said. “I would not be able to do these things without pain if it was not for Dr. Piccioni and the team at Nanticoke.” To learn more about Nanticoke’s Joint Camp program, call 302-629-6611, extension 5105 or visit www. nanticoke.org/jointcamp.
If it was not for the help of Dr. Lawrence Piccioni, orthopedic surgeon, and the team at Nanticoke Health Services, King might not have been able to make this climb—at least not without a lot of pain. After an attempt at the climb last year (he was one day from the summit when a person he was with became ill), he was in a lot of pain. His knees were very sore and they got progressively worse. Walking short distances hurt, sitting for too long hurt, and he had trouble sleeping because of the constant pain in his knees. This past winter, the pain prompted him to see a specialist in Utah. The specialist told him he was too young for knee replacement surgery and he recommended an expensive brace to help reduce the pain and pressure on his knees. King did some research and even spoke to someone who had the brace. This person told King the brace could cause more pain and bruising and told King it probably

CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Fat Removal pockets of excess fat. This non-invasive procedure represents an alternative to surgical liposuction by using a novel cooling technology that permanently removes fat cells from treated areas.
How does CoolSculpting Work?
Michelle Parsons, MD
is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State ni ersity of ew ork in eneral Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. The biggest trend in cosmetic surgery is the expansion of non-invasive body countouring technology, the best of which is CoolSculpting, which is now available at ReNove Medical in Rehoboth Beach. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat. Arms and legs can be treated as well. Unlike some other non-surgical technologies that release fat from fat cells, such as Vasershape and I-Lipo, Coolsculpting destroys the fat cells thereby eliminating treated fat permanently, as our body does not make new fat cells. Coolsculpting is a unique non-surgical treatment for removal of fat from localized
The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas.
What are the most common areas to be treated?
Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. These are the areas that Cool culpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can
be treated and eliminated by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the muffin top waist brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.
Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting?
Before
The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. It is common to have numbness or decreased sensitivity in the treated area lasting 1 to 2 weeks. In some instances patients will develop a burning tingling sensation 5 days after the treatment which can be controlled with a Lidoderm patch. There are virtually no long term negative side effects.
What does CoolSculpting feel like?
Our treatment room is very comfortable where you will relax on a padded recliner. When the CoolSculpting is applied to the fatty area to be treated there is a sensation of pulling that feels slightly uncomfortable for the first to minutes. radually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. There seems to be a natural endorphin release during the treatment so patients are very relaxed during the treatment, which takes an hour. Some people have fallen asleep during the treatment! A typical treatment session lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how many areas are treated. During the treatment, we have
After et i a ailable so you can watch a mo ie or catch up on your favorite television program. usy moms find this time to themselves a real treat! We also have Wi-Fi.
How quickly do people see results?
After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells are actually killed and will be eliminated by the body over time. Many report seeing changes in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. The full benefit will take as long as to days.
How long to results last?
Once the fat cells are frozen, killed and naturally eliminated by your body, the results are permanent. You can still gain weight in other areas if you over eat and don t continue to try to remain fit. If you are interested in learning more about CoolSculpting and would like to see if you are a good candidate for this effective treatment to lose unwanted fatty areas, please call us today to set up an appointment to meet with Dr. Michelle Parsons at ReNove Medical, Health Rejuvenating Spa, in ehoboth each . e will be offering an introductory Special this season, so please inquire.

Benefits of Hospice Care There are few words that F cause more fear, or are
more misunderstood, than “hospice”. Just mention the “h” word, and most people stop listening. Many have misconceptions about what hospice truly is. Most of our patients and their families had little or no idea of what hospice actually was or what it involved until they came under Delaware Hospice’s care. But when they started witnessing the benefits of hospice care, the most common statement we hear is “we wish we had known about hospice sooner.” In a living room in Lewes, Jerry and his wife meet their great- granddaughter for the first time. ater Jerry joins his family for a meal in the dinin room. Would it be surprising to know Jerry is receiving hospice services from Delaware Hospice? Moments like these may seem ordinary to most but to Jerry and his family they are magical! Hospice care provides time for special moments and lasting memories, while focusing on quality of time versus quantity. Every year more than 1.58 million people living with a life limiting illness receive care from US hospice agencies. Hospice patients live, on average, 29 days longer than non-hospice patients. This is typical because the patient is in a familiar,
comfortable environment – their home, assisted living, or skilled nursing facility. Their symptoms are being properly managed, needs are being met, not just the physical, but the psychosocial and spiritual as well. Patients may receive care longer than six months, depending on the disease. Some patients even graduate hospice care because their health improves! Many people only consider hospice care in the final days of life. Hospice care is most beneficial when there is sufficient time to manage symptoms and establish a trusting relationship with both the patient and the family. Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans cover services fully. However, Delaware Hospice as a nonprofit cares for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. An extended care team strives to accomplish personal goals when hospice care is elected. Delaware Hospice’s team includes a medical director, registered nurses, CNA’s, social workers, chaplains, adult and child bereavement counselors, and volunteers. The team works under the direction of the patient’s own physician. There is also a positive impact on the family as they benefit from hospice services such as having supplies delivered, education on medications,

and gained knowledge of what to expect in the months ahead. Volunteers provide extra support through companionship, help with errands, and breaks for the family caregiver. A recent Gallup poll indicated that 9 out of 10 adults prefer to be in their own homes at the end of life, one of the very reasons hospice care improves quality of life. It is not surprising that hospice care has been shown to lower healthcare costs. A study by Duke University shows hospice care in America saves healthcare dollars and brings quality care to patients and their families. By helping patients get the care they need, hospice care helps avoid unnecessary tests, ER visits, and hospital stays. In fact, Delaware Hospice is a recognized leader in Delaware for their success in lowering hospital readmissions. Hospice care is available to people of all ages with any life limiting illness. ery few people are aware of how much they use their teeth on a daily basis. It is not until an individual begins to lose teeth and their oral health and quality of life declines that they begin to understand the impact of impaired oral function on their daily life. Patients with missing and/ or failing teeth suffer from malnutrition, reduced self esteem, and self confidence. hey possess a high risk for developing oral conditions such as boney atrophy. Patients also suffer from periodontal disease, cavities, root canal infections, and serious bite problems called “Bite Collapse”. In addition to serious dental conditions, patients with severely failing dentitions can also be more at risk for serious medical conditions such as: cardiovascular problems, stroke and diabetes, complications if pregnant, with a high risk of preterm and low birth weight babies. here are several solutions for individuals with failing dentition. he typical se uence of therapy to address these complex dental conditions could require at least three surgeries. First, the teeth are extracted and the bone is allowed to heal. Patients will temporarily function in a traditional upper or lower denture, which at times impacts the patient’s diet choices. Next, the implants are placed and require a healing time of three to four months. A third surgery is done to expose the implants. he start to finish time is six to eight months. During this time, patients use removable dentures to function.

he ll on Protocol uses only four dental implants to replace an entire arch of teeth. By angling the back implants, we can avoid nerves and sinus grafting which often requires much more aggressive surgical treatment. Not only does this technique replace an entire arch of teeth, but it allows Dr. Klassman to correct bite problems that were not correctable with other treatment options. Patient’s lives are improved instantly by giving them immediate fixed teeth which improves eating, nutrition, psychological confidence, and removes all sources of infection. his occurs by connecting the new set of teeth to the implants, protecting the surgical site. With time, age and gravity, our facial structures tend to lose some of the youthful volume it once had. The cherubic apples in our cheeks fall, leaving us with a drooping jaw line that becomes jowls, and deep lines form around the nose and mouth areas, known as the nasolabial folds. Fortunately there is a solution for these pesky issues of aging. Physicians can now treat their patients with an in office procedure known as dermal filler in ections. What are Dermal Fillers? ermal fillers are medical products that are injected by a trained physician to fill in facial areas where volume has been lost, so that it is possible to lift those cheeks back up and fill in the deep lines around the nose or nasolabial folds, and the depressions around the lower mouth and chin areas known as the marionette lines. Treatments with dermal fillers are a wonderful way to restore a more youthful appearance. However, what has not been so wonderful is how long they lasted, which has been temporary, on average from 6 to 18 months, as the products are slowly reabsorbed and eliminated by the body. This has been a disappointing aspect of dermal fillers. ut this is where the story in non-surgical facial

Invisalign Is Perfect For Adults Dr. Richard J. McCann, D.M.D., P.A. Dr. McCann grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania and attended King’s College where he earned a B.S. degree in Biology. He went on to graduate from Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. McCann is Northeast Regional Board ertified. Invisalign offers a much better way than the old mouthfull-of-metal braces. It is perfect for adults who want to straighten their teeth without all the embarrassment. If you’re an adult who wants to straighten your teeth, the old metal braces just aren’t going to do the trick. Invisalign offers a solution that’s much better and more effective. Straightening teeth has always been something that you either did in childhood or didn’t do. Invisalign gives you another option as a child and as an adult. Let’s look at the reasons why braces for adults have never been cool. The Stigma Let’s face it; have a mouth full of metal when you’re 35 just isn’t right. There’s a stigma for kids who are wearing braces and it’s ten times worse for adults. It just doesn’t look right on an adult somehow, like acne or hip-hop clothes. Invisalign helps by removing the stigma. The Invisalign aligners are almost invisible. You have to look really close to see them. This means that nobody in your office or circle of friends has to know that you re getting your teeth straightened. Cleaning And Other Annoyances The cleaning that you have to do with braces is another reason adults don’t get them. Who has time for all of that? It’s tough enough to deal with all of the other daily annoyances. Invisalign treatment doesn’t require any additional cleaning you just take the set of aligners out and brush and oss as normal. The aligners are changed e ery two weeks or as often as the doctor prescribes. It’s just like soft contact lenses. And you can also take them out anytime you want to but should be worn as close to 24/7 as you can. Braces Can Hurt More Than They Help Braces can actually cause more damage to your teeth. The reason is that there are certain areas that you just can’t get to with your toothbrush while they’re in, therefore the risk of tooth decay increases. With Invisalign aligners, you can slip them off any time you need to brush your teeth and there is no risk whatsoever to your perfect smile. And They Work Finally, there are failures as well as success stories when it comes to braces. This is not the case with Invisalign technology. It’s highly effective because it uses computer

imaging to custom-design your aligners. You can even see a computer image of what you’ll look like when your Invisalign treatment is completed and your smile is straight! Finding A Good Dentist Unfortunately, at the present time not every dentist offers Invisalign. If you’re thinking about straightening your teeth with this state-of-the-art treatment you need not look any further than r. ichard cCann s office. s a designated 2017 Preferred Provider of Invisalign he has knowledge and expertise to help you achieve your goals of a beautiful smile. Invisalign can straighten your teeth for you no matter what age you are. And you don’t have to worry about everybody knowing about it. Finally there’s a way to perfect your smile without cramming your mouth full of metal braces.
Dr. McCann will be providing courtesy consultations to answer your questions about Invisalign treatment, the clear way to straighten teeth. If you have wondered if Invisalign is right for you, make an appointment. • Complimentary Consultation. • No charge for records to see if you are a candidate. • Complimentary whitening with Invisalign treatment. • 4 vivera retainers included with treatment at the end of treatment.

Helping Make Holidays Brighter IN SENIOR COMMUNITIES provide gifts to residents just like family. Presents are displayed under the tree and given to the residents in a manner very reminiscent of opening gifts at one’s own home. Henry, the Parsons’ family dog, even dresses up for the occasion with his Santa jacket for the party.
H
arrison Senior Living’s John B. Parsons Assisted Living Community is set in a historic Victorian mansion that exudes warmth and comfort. Built in 1904, the original home was constructed for the daughter of former Maryland Governor, Elihu Jackson, and was considered by many to be the grandest in all of Salisbury. While the mansion is beautiful year-round, during the holiday season the community truly comes alive and the festive spirit is palatable. Traditional garland adorns the stately main porch and up lighting warms the intricate façade. The staff, many of whom have been with the company for decades, greet each resident and family member by name. Entering the foyer, several large Christmas trees stand handsomely as residents enjoy happy hour in the elegant parlors and laugh about the events that occurred during the day’s activities.
Shopping Made Easy
This year marks the third annual “12 Days of Christmas” celebration for the community. Events are planned from the 1st to the 12th of December to celebrate the holidays. Activities include horse and carriage rides, ice cream socials, crafts, outings, an exotic petting zoo brought onsite, children carolers, a pet parade, and breakfast with Santa. Vendors are brought in to stay throughout the events so residents can do their holiday shopping without ever having to leave the premises.
Carrying on Traditions
These events are planned to help residents feel as though they are celebrating the holidays in the comfort of their own home. Families are invited to the winter open house where a candlelit dinner is served with festive music accompanying the meal. The annual Christmas party is always a special time for the residents. Each year, caregivers

And while all of these activities are designed to bring out everyone’s holiday spirit, they’re also carefully curated with the residents’ needs in mind. The holidays can be a very difficult time for many people, especially for those that suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s. That is why the memory care residents have seasonal craft activities designed specifically for them. These residents are often comforted by familiar patterns, which is why the house is decorated in traditional décor and the Christmas carolers sing classic songs. Children
are often seen around the halls during the holiday season, which can be very soothing to residents, as they find delight in youth.
Respite Care During the Holidays
The John B. Parsons community also offers respite care so caregivers can get a short reprieve from the stress of caring for an aging family member during the rigorous holiday season. By using this service, the caregiver can focus on other holiday needs, rest assured that his or her loved one is receiving the best care possible while also enjoying the holiday season.
Warmest Greetings Visit Harrison Senior Living this special time of year to see how cherished traditions are preserved. We welcome the holidays with enthusiasm, joy and compassion. It’s the same kind of attention to detail provided year-round for all aspects of our personalized senior care.

Navigating menopause and beyond. Birth control pills are also an option for women who experience numerous, heavy and erratic periods.
Menopause is a normal part of life that affects all women differently. But women don’t have to navigate its three stages — perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause — alone. Trusted obstetrical and gynecologic physicians Miaohou Xu, MD, PhD, (left) and John E. Deaver, MD, (right)at Bayhealth Women’s Care Associates, Milford, are available to guide patients through the transition. Menopause is the time of your last menstrual period and fertility, but women will typically see changes in their body leading up to this point. These changes begin with perimenopause and affect the levels of estrogen and progesterone the body produces. This stage is usually triggered by irregular menstrual cycles, but women may still get pregnant. “Hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, lower sex drive, and breast tenderness are all part of the symptoms of perimenopause, but people are different and experience different symptoms” explained Dr. Xu. Perimenopause can start years before your last menstrual period lasting on average four years. To ease the symptoms of perimenopause, Dr. Xu advises her patients to stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, and incorporate calcium and vitamin D in their diets. “Aging is irreversible,” she said. “There are changes women should make now to help alleviate the discomforts commonly associated with menopause.” She encourages patients to make these changes before considering hormone replacement therapy to help ease hot flashes.
A woman will know when she’s gone through menopause after experiencing a full year without a period. “Bleeding after menopause is never normal,” said Dr. Deaver. The average woman has her last period at age 51, but some have it in their 40s or later in their 50s. Following menopause is postmenopause — this is the stage where women will see the symptoms of perimenopause steadily decrease. Dr. Deaver does caution that some women will experience weakening of pelvic support during postmenopause. “Pelvic support is weakened by childbirth and estrogen hormone loss associated with menopause,” explained Dr. Deaver. “As a result, we treat postmenopausal women who have prolapse, leakage of urine and sexual problems like painful intercourse.”
“AGING IS IRREVERSIBLE, THERE ARE CHANGES WOMEN SHOULD MAKE NOW TO HELP ALLEVIATE THE DISCOMFORTS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH MENOPAUSE.” — Miaohou Xu, MD, PhD
“Women need to develop a relationship with their gynecologist while they are young, and continue that relationship beyond their reproductive years,” urged Dr. Deaver. “We are often a woman’s first line of support in dealing with a broad spectrum of health issues.”
“During postmenopause, women should be more comprehensive in their approach to preventive health measures,” explained Dr. Deaver. “After 30 years of age, most women need a Pap smear (with HPV test) only every five years and don’t need Pap smears at all after 65 to 70 years of age,” said Dr. Deaver. “But after menopause, women are at risk of other serious health problems including diabetes; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; thyroid problems; osteoporosis; and breast, uterine, and colon cancers.” Many women already have a relationship with their OB-GYN physician who will coordinate this care, including mammograms, colonoscopies, bone scans, and blood tests. Both Drs. Deaver and Xu agree that women need to have nationally recommended health screenings through every stage of life, even if they have no symptoms. “It’s worth it,” said Dr. Deaver.

Animals have thought processes, emotions, social connections, and personalities – just as humans do. All animals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP: I am offering basic natural horsemanship (better known as horse whispering) lessons at Sweet Meadow Stables in the Roxana/W. Fenwick area. Natural horsemanship is the philosophy of working with horses based on the horse’s natural instincts and methods of communication. The word “horsemanship” broken down is horse-man-relationship. Horsemanship means the horse and the man in the process of building a relationship. When we build a relationship that is meaningful, it consists of respect, trust, love and really listening and communicating to each other. This is the foundation of building a relationship with a horse. Natural horsemanship is the understanding of the horse’s natural instincts and body language, and communicating with the horse in his own language. You will learn how horses communicate, while also focusing on safety. Horses are herd animals and therefore are very social. A horse’s reaction comes from instinct. They are intelligent and have highly developed senses. You will learn to develop a bond with a horse based on mutual respect and trust, and not the use of fear and pain.

Women and H eart Disease:
Reconnecting with a good ol’ f riend Recently published research reveals, once again, the lack of awareness about the impact of heart disease in women, among both women and physicians, and how the stigmatization of the disease and body weight continue to be major barriers to women seeking treatment. Data collected from interviews on 1,011 US women aged 25-60 years of age and physician survey data from 200 primary care doctors and 100 cardiologists (*). The main goals were to determine knowledge, attitudes and beliefs in regard to heart disease in women. The findings can be summari ed as follows: 1. Awareness: Among women, 45 % were unaware of the fact that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. This level of awareness was even lower among women with lower educational levels and income as well as in ethnic minorities. About 71% of women the issue of heart health was never raised with their doctors. Conversely,
physicians did not discuss cardiovascular disease with them citing other more pressing health issues at the time of their visit or the lack of reported cardiac symptoms. This suggests prevention was not seen as priority, in the absence of symptoms. As we know, among women the first symptom of a heart problem is often a heart attack or sudden cardiac death. 2. Assessment: Even though a majority of women had an annual physical exam or wellness visit, only 40 % reported having a heart health assessment. About 74 % reported having at least one risk factor for heart disease, just 16 % were told by their doctor that they were at risk. An interesting fact is that 45 % of women cancelled or postponed their doctor visit until they lost weight, out of embarrassment or by feeling overwhelmed by their heart disease, and lack of time to exercise or take better care of themselves. 3. Among the doctors surveyed, only 22 % of
18 I Winter 2017/2018
primary care physicians and 42 % or cardiologist felt well prepared to assess cardiovascular risk in women. In addition, risk assessment guidelines were implemented by only 16 % of primary care doctors and by 22 % of cardiologists. There remains a need for the medical community to try and help counteract the stereotypes that still exist about cardiovascular disease in women. This
requires raising the level of awareness about these issues and to help women overcome barriers to increasing physical activity and to develop healthier eating habits instead of focusing in the stigma of just weight loss. Women are natural caregivers, often times neglecting their own personal care, while doing all and then some for others. It is time to take care of the caregivers as well.

What is Ultherapy? is a face and neck treatment that improves skin laxity in a meaningful way but completelynon–surgically.
Jowls
Michelle Parsons, MD
is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. Here at ReNove Medical, Dr. Parsons offers Ultherapy, a state of the art medical procedure utilizing focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten sagging skin. No scalpel or anesthesia is needed. Ultherapy is great for people who would like tightening and lifting of facial skin without have a surigcal facelift. The Ulthera sound energy passes right through the skin and targets the areas you want lifted. During a typical 30-60 minute Ultherapy treatment session, an ultrasound applicator is passed over each region of the face. The sound waves emitted deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue. The beauty of Ultherapy ‘uplifting ultrasound’ is that it
Ultherapy works great for sagging jowls, where the skin is fatty, heavy and drooping. Ultherapy is able to reduce this fatty heaviness, tapering the jaw line, for a more youthful look. Ultherapy can restore a more youthful shape to the face from a square to the inverted triangle.
Nasolabial Folds
Ultherapy also works well to minimize the drooping of excess skin that we get along each side of the nose, or lower cheeks. ou may think that you need to fill in these areas with a filler but the real problem may be that fat and loose skin is just falling down due to the effects of gravity. With ultherapy we can target this area and minimize the fattiness and tighten up that skin. Again this will restore the more youthful balance of the face with the center of gravity higher in the cheek areas.
Neck
Ultherapy can tighten up that loose skin underneath our necks as well. The area that Ultherapy works the best is that area just underneath the chin and extending into that curve of the neck. Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a surgical neck lift. But if you have somewhat loose and fatty skin in your upper neck, hanging just beneath your chin, Ultherapy can impro e this area and impro e your profile.

Perhaps one the most dramatic areas that Ultherapy can improve on without surgery is the eye area and creating a brow lift, helping to lift heavy drooping eyelids. Ultherapy can make the eyes appear more open,
more awake, rested and more youthful. This may be subtle change but this small difference can ha e a significant effect! Our clients really love this part of the Ultherapy results.
Before
Overall Ultherapy works wonders to taper, redefine your facial contours, while eliminating fatty, droopy areas, and lift and tightening skin around the eyes and underneath the chin, for a more youthful sculpted look. The stars in Hollywood do this treatment, and now you have access to this age defying procedure right here in Delaware at the beach. Dr. Parsons is pleased to bring this cutting edge highly sought after technology to you to help you look your best. If you think you may be candidate for Ultherapy, please give us a call to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Michelle Parsons. 302227-1079.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Ultherapy?
After just one treatment with no downtime, your skin will gradually shift back into a more youthful position. Improvements include a sleeker more defined jawline and tighter skin on the neck under the chin. Sagging skin on the cheeks can be tightened and lifted, which in turn can
After
improve folds from the nose to mouth, folds from the mouth to jaw, and drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look in general. The results of Ultherapy are permanent, just as the results of a face-lift are permanent, 0f course, your skin will continue its natural aging process. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery but looking for meaningful results.
TESTIMONIAL One week after my Ultherapy Treatment, my husband, after being out of town for a couple of days asked me “what’s different about you,” he was staring at my face! Not having told him about my treatment I innocently said “what do you mean?” His response was “I am not sure but your face looks different.” I asked “different good or different bad?” He replied “different good, looks stretched.” I was surprised that the results were noticed that quickly. I found the treatment to be bearable, certainly wasn’t pain free, but tolerable. I was very happy when it was over! For the past 2 weeks following the treatment my face has been tender which is a reminder that the treatment is continuing to work! I would highly recommend it to all! K.M. – Ocean City, MD.

Winter Health Challenges Dr. Tracy Hudson
Dr. Sheila Burek
Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.

Winterize Your Pilates Program By Staying “Fired Up” All Year! By Nancy Hawkins Rigg Founder and Owner, Forever Fit Foundation
D
o you ever feel like the seasons dictate how you work out and what intensity you choose? You’re not alone! There are so many factors that are involved in the type of exercises we choose and when. At Forever Fit Foundation people come to us for guidance on a wide variety of needs, which is why it is imperative that we diversify our skill sets, and take advantage of a range of educational opportunities to meet our clients’ needs. Keeping our members excited about exercise and longevity with their program is our number one priority. Through our education and training, we are able to “meet” our clients where they are . . . physically, mentally and emotionally.
H eart Disease
For women under 65, depression is emerging as a significant ris factor for coronary artery disease. This includes menopause and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). What better way to combat this than by a consistent Pilates routine that strengthens the heart, soul and mind.
A ctivity
80% of Americans do not meet recommended physical activity levels and 45% are not active enough to improve their health. What?! Why can’t movement be
fun and something we enjoy? ctivity increases blood ow and circulation and increases our “feel good” hormones. Whether we participate from a social standpoint or solace peace, most people would experience enjoyment in moving their bodies if they were able to find the right movement for them . . . whether it’s walking, sports, dancing, or Pilates!
Stress
of people find their ob stressful. 26% consider themselves “often” burned out and 29% label themselves as “extremely” stressed. One of the best ways to tackle stress is creating a variety of exercises that challenge and excite you. Exercise frequency and variety are key factors in longevity. Even though we may have limited leisure time, choosing activities that relax, yet stimulate you are so important.

Perception of hard work
•
Mindless routine
•
Feeling you “have to”
•
Response to eating too much?
In the past, people bought into several intimidating messages concerning exercise programs. Some of these messages were: there is only one way to exercise, high intensity training is a must, women have to lift weights, or everyone needs to do kettlebell training. People will most likely stick to an exercise program when they have immediate success. They also make choices about what’s going to make them feel better TODAY!

In context, starting an exercise routine comes from a place of shame, self-criticism, and inadequacy. There’s something wrong with your body, and you should look a different way or be a different person, and exercise is the thing that will fix you. When someone enters into any activity from this view point, it takes a lot of the intrinsic joy out of that activity and creates a context for people to experience negative emotions and to interpret sensations of exercise in a negative way. We need to be able to explore “alternative” movement options with no shame or fear. That’s where Pilates steps in! The studio welcomes, warms, invites, and inspires our clients to take a deep breath and think about
the “experience” rather than the “exercise”. Pilates workouts at Forever Fit Foundation are fun, interesting and ever varied. The machines that we use, in conjunction with small apparatuses such as bands, balls, rollers, glider discs, and rings create a fun environment. ur certified trainers are highly s illed at eeping you fired up all year with our commitment to your needs and goals. Where else can you Tilt, Tuck, Pike, Bridge, Draw Your Sword, Abduct, Adduct, and Jog (while laying down) all in one workout? Come check it out! Don’t let the holiday hustle slow you down and make you lose track of who you are and how much fun you can have while working out!

Health & Medicine Dr. Andrea Goldstein
Dr. Goldstein is a board-certified specialist in gastroenterology/hepatology who received her medical degree from Georgetown University. She enjoys being on the leading edge of new treatments for diseases that in the past had no cure. Dr. Goldstein is one of the physicians who perform the CRH O’Regan System at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates, for internal hemorrhoids. In most cases if the CRH O’Regan system is deemed appropriate, it can be performed at your initial consultation. Dr. Goldstein is an involved mother, helping her children with piano lessons and volunteering with Girl Scouts. She was trained in opera and sings in the community choir. She is also active with her synagogue, including delivering food to a local shelter through the Jewish Relief Agency. “As a doctor, I strive to give my patients the best possible medical care they can receive, in an environment where they can feel comfortable. This starts with talking and listening closely to ensure that I get a complete picture of the patient’s medical history and symptoms, and also that my patient understands what she needs to know to follow her treatment plan and return for the follow-up testing she needs to protect her health. Giving my time, compassion and full attention is as important as any test or procedure I perform.”
HEMORRHOIDAL TREATMENT Over half the population will experience some type of hemorrhoidal problem in their lifetime. You may be suffering in silence because you are too embarrassed to discuss the problem, or worry that the cure will be more painful than the problem itself. Now, advances in medicine have made hemorrhoid treatment fast and virtually painless. our only challenge is finding a doctor who offers the right treatment and makes you feel comfortable receiving it. How do hemorrhoids develop? Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and engorged veins in the anal and rectal region. They are most commonly caused by changes in frequency of bowel movements, pressure of straining and hormonal changes or pressure during pregnancy. The veins swell and stretch and gradually lose the support of surrounding connective tissue. Hemorrhoids can cause the following symptoms: Itching/Burning Bleeding Protrusion during Bowel Movements Pain Hygiene Concerns Are all hemorrhoids the same? Hemorrhoids are actually classified into four stages based upon severity. This helps determine which treatment is most appropriate for you. 1) Stage I: The hemorrhoids remain inside at all times. They do not protrude from the anus. 2) Stage II: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but reduce spontaneously. 3) Stage III: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but require manual insertion. 4) Stage IV: Fourth degree hemorrhoids: The most severe hemorrhoids always protrude and cannot be pushed back inside. What are the treatment options for removing hemorrhoids? Effective hemorrhoid treatment depends on your specific medical condition. o doctor should recommend a solution without first doing an e am

to rule out other potential causes of rectal pain or bleeding.
Once you have been diagnosed with hemorrhoids, you will have different options to choose from, depending on the severity of your case. You may get ade uate relief from increasing fiber in your diet taking warm sitz baths and using topical creams. Treatment options include a variety of minimally in asi e procedures that cut off blood ow to the hemorrhoid and cause it to shrink. In some cases your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remo e e cess tissue. What is the most painless method for treatment? An even less invasive and pain-free solution has recently been approved for internal hemorrhoids. This new banding option, the CRH O’Regan System ™ is considered the “gold standard” in treatment and almost eliminates the discomfort and recovery time associated with other hemorrhoid removal options. During the 60 SECOND procedure, the physician uses a gentle suction device to place a small rubber band around the tissue, just above the hemorrhoid. There are very few nerve endings in this area to cause any pain. The hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within a day or two. Research has shown that 99.8% of patients treated with the CRH O’Regan System ™ have no post-procedure pain and require no pain medication before, during, or after the procedure. There is no bowel prep, and you can drive yourself home afterwards. nother ad antage e ternal hemorrhoids may also improve with this option. Make an appointment with a specialist If you or a family member is ready to get permanent relief from hemorrhoids, you should make an appointment with a digest specialist for an accurate diagnosis and the
most appropriate treatments available. Only doctors who have been specially trained by CRH O’Regan System ™ trainers/doctors are licensed to provide this state-of-the-art banding treatment. Locally, it is performed at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates (HGA).

Twila Farrell A weekend trip to Delaware in 1989 was the beginning of a long love affair with the charming little town of Lewes. On Second street was the National 5 & 10 variety store that stopped me in my tracks. I just couldn’t believe they still existed. One of my first obs as a teenager in my hometown in Oklahoma was in the fi e and dime store. After moving to Pennsylvania in 1963 I worked in several different companies but always wanted to have my own business. A building became available in Media, Pa. and I bought it. The following year I purchased the building next door with an existing dress shop, so that is how I got into clothing. Twenty some years later coming to Lewes and seeing the “for rent” sign on Second Street felt right to add another store to the mix. And I could enjoy the summer and the beach. The space was only 400 Sq Ft filled with ewelry and hand painted clothing. n we mo ed to a larger location on Second Street where we are now. Ironically this is the former location of the first lo ed when came here. I split my time between Media and Lewes until 2000 at which time I sold my buildings and business and mo ed here full time. find it ery interesting living here and I certainly enjoy the slower lifestyle. I am lucky I have my daughter-in-law, Sandy, as my business partner. She joined me in 2004 and has been a wonderful addition to the business.

Why People Fear Dentists 1. A bad dental experience as a child Many people with dental phobia have held these fears since they were children, dating back to an unpleasant episode they had with a dentist in the past. It’s easy to see why someone would be loath to return to the dentist after an experience like this. They have a fear that those traumatic events will happen again. No one likes to get hurt, and many people choose to avoid having to go to the dentist altogether rather than to face those fears. 2. Pre-existing anxiety disorder For many people, an anxiety disorder that’s not even dental related may be causing their dental phobia. They may feel anxious about anything unknown.
b e v o g m w th s m o c a s to
h c b
3. Lack of control Some people feel vulnerable when they are sitting in the dentist chair. They don’t like lying back and not being able to see what is going on around them. They worry about the unknown when they do not have complete control of a situation. 4. Bad teeth Sadly, a dental phobia can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. People who are scared of the dentist may be fearful of going because they worry they have cavities that will need to be drilled. But if they do not go to the dentist and get their teeth cleaned, the chances of them having other dental complications increases. This fear ensures that when an individual finally makes it to the dentist, they may need serious treatment, which may upset them. 5. Biological mechanisms A norwegian researcher has determined that patients have a deep desire to protect their open air passages (such as mouths and noses). This is an evolutionary instinct: our ancestors who protected their mouths and noses were more likely to remain alive.

Parents of newborns are well nown to be sleep deprived. lthough infants need a lot of sleep, it ta es a while for them to consolidate most of their sleep into a somewhat solid bloc of nighttime sleep, accompanied by daytime naps. C.M.BAKER PHOTOGRAPHY
In 1987 I started C.M.Baker Photography with a goal to provide quality photography service to the Delmarva area. Since then, C.M.Baker Photography has expanded and evolved just as the photography world has. From film to digital and weeks to de elop to instantly printing photos on site, C.M.Baker Photography has many services to offer today’s client looking for photography services. Printing photos onsite started about 10 years ago. We were able to capture the shot, take the card out and print out a 5x7 or 4x6 about 45 minutes after the photo was taken. Boy, have things changed! For events, we now can take photos in front of a background or green screen with limitless choices, and have the photo print out in about 15 seconds. This is great for birthday parties, corporate events or fundraisers. We can even include your logo or text on the 4x6 or 5x7 image. With wedding packages, you will also receive 10, 8x10 photos printed onsite from earlier in your day that will be on display at your reception. Recently our onsite printing experiences have expanded even more as we now have two photo booths! We have a classic black, indoor photobooth that adds a fun experience for your guests to any event. We come to your event loaded with props

and ready to have fun! Our second photobooth is inside of a 1969 Shasta Compact Camper and is perfect for your next outdoor event of any kind! We have had so much fun taking our Shasta Shutterbug all over the state and surrounding areas! Upon reserving either photobooth for your event you are able to personalize your photo strip size, color and text. This makes a wonderful favor for guests to remember your celebration or providing advertisement for your business event. Something else that has emerged over the years? Social media! Social media and technology have become a huge part in today’s word. Website photos and head shots for your LinkedIn page or business website are an important part of today’s advertising. We have enjoyed coming into many local businesses and colleges and taking head shots for current employees or new graduates to help them start off on the right foot toward their career. In addition to the newer services being offered, we are still providing the classic wedding packages, engagement sessions and event photography. TERMITE & PEST SOLUTIONS Born and raised on the Eastern Shore, Service is the backbone of my business . -Dean Bennett, Because Local Matters Just like you, my day starts right here; I’ve been in the pest control business for almost 24 years but I’ve been a local to these shores all my life...born and raised. Growing up here has shaped my life and how do business. t s why family and commitment come first and why service and responsibility are part of every job I do. And with every job, it’s important you know I’m only ever a phone call away. The same goes for our technicians. ach one is professionally trained and state certified and that’s important. But just as important to me is that each one treats you and your home with respect, courtesy and professionalism. In fact, we treat your home like our home because in a way, it is. So no matter what your pest control need is, we can help because we are your true, local pest control service team: residential or commercial, builder, realtor or property manager...mom or dad. We’re here when you need us because we’re here all the time.
Testimonials The Milford Public Library being a public building for all, we were experiencing many issues with cockroaches, called Bennett’s , they responded to us with their expertise and professional knowledge and staff to assist us to eliminate our issues. A few months later after signing contracts with them, we experienced a bed bug problem, immediately they were finding a solution, Dean Bennett spent many hours researching how to handle this problem in a library where the heat treatment could not be used and within days had our situation under control and found a maintenance program for regular prevention. Dean, and all Bennett employees are professional, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. Recently I experienced an issue with bed bugs. I called around to several different pest companies in Baltimore, MD and I came across Bennett Termite & Pest Solutions. I spoke with Bruce for over 40 minutes, he answered every single question I had. He was very informative and detailed about the process not missing a beat. The next day I told him I wanted to hire them for my treatment he did a conference call with himself and Dean(Owner) and there after Vinnie and Dean came out a few days later and did the heat treatment. Very professional, informative, fast and efficient. I work for a housing office in Baltimore and we plan on using this company for some of our client’s needs. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone. It’s worth every dime and you will have a peace of mind bug free.

Murphy Beds: A Great Addition at the Beach! Many of us remember the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy gets trapped in a Murphy bed! Those days are long gone with modern Murphy bed designs but the advantages of the wall bed remain. Being at the beach, we all get a lot of company but real estate is expensive. We need a way to dual-purpose our rooms without sacrificing comfort for our guests or styling for our décor.
Bill and Janis Nickerson opened Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach in early 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native. This move completes a commitment Bill made 20 years ago to “retire” to Sussex County. The Tailored Living franchise allows Bill to pursue two of his passions of woodworking and entrepreneurship. It has been an exciting second year completing many pantries, garages, home offices, Murphy beds, and closets in and around DelMarVa. Let us design a solution for you!
The Murphy Wall Bed offered by Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach offers a great solution. We custom design the bed in twin, double, or queen size with side storage and decorative panels to enhance your room. We also offer a library style that hides the bed with sliding bookshelves and lighting for reading and accent. Avoid the discomfort for your guests of foldout couches while en oying the benefits of reclaiming the guest room in your home. A Murphy bed instead of a standard queen bed will save s uare feet of oor space when the bed is closed se that found space for a home office play room craft room whate er you like by calling your Tailored Living Organizational Specialist to design a Murphy bed for your home.

Tis the season for safety! By Regan Roberts Deck, CMI
Whether you’re turning on your furnace for the first time, putting up holiday decorations around your house and yard or plugging in multiple strands of twinkle lights at one receptacle à la A Christmas Story, take care this winter. The news is already peppered with stories about carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and the season has barely begun. Remember, CO is colorless and odorless so safety starts with CO detectors. Whether it’s a plug in or combined with your smoke detector you should ha e one on each oor of your home and in e ery bedroom. If you suspect a CO leak, immediately seek a source of fresh air (outside) and then call 911. If you smell something burning near an electrical receptacle, that is NOT carbon monoxide, but you should still check it out. Trip the receptacle’s circuit breaker and unplug whatever’s in the outlet. Assuming the smell dissipates, call us to investigate the cause. If the smell persists, however, you know the drill: exit the house and call 911. Hopefully, though, you won’t be outside for either of the two reasons I just talked about and instead you ll find yourself outside prepping your home for the coming winter or for the plethora of holidays counting down on the calendar. If you’re going to be on a ladder cleaning gutters or putting up lights (or for any other reason), remember these safety tips: (1) Check that the ladder is leaning at a safe angle by standing with your toes touching the side rails and grabbing the rung at shoulder height.. If your arms are full extended and parallel to the ground, the ladder is pitched properly. (2) Always maintain three points of contact with the ladder as you climb. Yep, that means you should always carry your tools and supplies in an apron or on a belt, not in your hands (3) Do not overextend your ladder. A 32-foot ladder needs at least 3 feet of overlap. Longer ladders need up to 6 feet. Check your ladder’s label for details. (4) Never stand on a rung that’s less than 3 feet from the top. As always, at Custom Mechanical we are happy to answer any questions you may have about electrical, heating, cooling, carpentry, plumbing and home performance related issues - on the phone, in person, via e-mail … even on Facebook! Blinds, Shades and Child Safety……
Do you remember all the news stories, a couple years ago, concerning child safety and window coverings? The subject sticks out in my mind obviously because it is related to my work and because I have small children. The concern was mostly over mail order and or stock items that were bought off a shelf and installed, usually, by the homeowner. There were tragedies, huge recalls and lawsuits but fortunately the custom window covering trade was not really involved. I would say that the overall higher quality of product and the experienced sales and installation that comes with a custom retailer helped to keep the trade unin ol ed howe er the custom window co ering community definitely took notice and many positive changes have taken place. There is much more awareness about the subject compared to a couple of years ago and that in its self is very helpful but the industry has been very proactive in making their products more child safe as well. On the awareness side of things, it is good to note that there are many products out there that have been around for a long time like shutters and draperies that already are or can be made without child safety’s #1 enemy which is strings. Draperies, when set up to traverse by hand, present no problems for toddlers or even pets who like them because they can easily move the fabric aside to leave wet nose marks on the glass. Shutters are another great choice. They are naturally string free, simple to use, even for children, and are one of the best insulators against both heat and cold. With their timeless look and classic feel they a great child safe choice in window coverings. One way that the industry is changing to become more child safe is the introduction of cordless control into a wider variety of products. Cordless roller shades and cordless honeycomb shades have been around for a while but lately we are seeing the industry really improving and trying to mainstream the option. The string free lift systems are getting better and more reliable plus now we are seeing the option more and more on roman shades and wood and faux wood blinds which was mostly an unavailable option in years past on these popular window coverings. Window covering manufacturers are also making improvements on shades and blinds that do have strings with breakaway mechanisms that will separate when too much stress is applied and they have made it so that small children can’t get their heads between the back of the shade and the strings found there on roman style shades. These are two very important changes. Next time you have a window covering need, please give us a call and let us help you make choices that are safer for your children and pets while impro ing the look and efficiency of your home.

Whether it be a newly purchased engagement ring, or a family heirloom, proper care and maintenance of jewelry is vital to ensure that our prized possessions remain as beautiful as they were the day they were received. At Sayers Jewelers & Gemologists we pride ourselves in selling and custom-creating quality jewelry, and we feel it is important to also educate our customers about the best ways to care for their pieces. Our experienced staff includes two full-time GIA (Gemological Institute of America) trained Graduate Gemologists as well as several other staff members with GIA training. They can help you find ust what you are loo ing for, create custom pieces, repair broken jewelry or resize pieces that don t fit right. ll of our repairs are done on premises in about two weeks, which means that your jewelry will be safely held in exceptional hands. Being in business for over 67 years, we have developed a reputation to others, and an expectation for ourselves to provide outstanding service to our customers.
Everyday Care
Common household activities and chores become routine, and you may not think about taking your jewelry off before using chemicals and scrubs to clean. Take off any fine ewelry while using household cleaning products, as the acids and bleaches could be potentially harmful to your gemstones and

gold. Jewelry should be the last item put on when getting ready for the day; only put your jewelry on after you have used your various perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays that could cause a residue to be left behind on your pieces. If you have any concerns about your jewelry and how to care for it, visit us and our experienced staff can assist you in finding the best ewelry cleaning methods and supplies for your specific needs. We have products for sale that can clean anything from diamonds to tarnished silverware, and if you are unsure about how to go about cleaning your jewelry, bring them in and our staff will gladly clean them for you.
Semiannual Check-ups
Stop in to Sayers Jewelers and we will be more than happy to take a look at your jewelry, especially wedding rings and other jewelry worn daily or very frequently. It is recommended to have the prongs checked on your engagement rings every six months to be sure they are intact and that your diamonds or other gemstones are not in danger of being lost.
as easy as it seems. The time of year needs to be taken into consideration because in the winter due to higher barometric pressure and lower temperatures your rings will fit more loosely. Using the correct sizers is also important. A wide wedding band for example will not feel the same as a narrow wedding ring that is the same finger si e. Wide si ers should be used for wide rings and narrow for narrow. If you solder two rings that fit together, they will feel tighter on your finger than each one separate. There is also the factor of the contour of the ring comfort fit or straight ma es a difference. Plastic sizers and paper sizers are not as accurate as metal sizers and guessing at the size to surprise someone usually never works. An experienced jeweler can guide you. For example, many
brides and grooms-to-be who have never worn a ring before tend to not want to feel it on their finger when they first put it on, which would result in a size that is too loose. Consequentially, they might lose their ring in the ocean on their honeymoon. The ring should just go over the knuckle and feel a little tight. In a few days your finger will adjust to the ring and it will be the proper fit and you won t feel it. s we age many folks develop arthritis which enlarges the knuckle and then the ring fits too loose and spins after it is over the knuckle. We have special shanks that open and close which can be installed on your ring to ma e it fit properly once it is on. WE ARE HERE TO HELP. Experience the Sayers Jewelers & Gemologists difference today.
Travel
If you are packing for a vacation, use care when packing your jewelry. Keep your jewelry in a soft cloth pouch or box to prevent scratching or abrasions. To prevent necklaces or chains from tangling, you can thread the chains through a plastic straw. If possible we recommend packing your most valuable jewelry in a carry-on bag, rather than a checked bag, to prevent loss or theft of your items.

‘Tis The Season For Safe Driving Susan D’Alonzo Ament is a partner with Morris James LLP and has practiced for 33 years representing personal injury victims. Over the years, Mrs. Ament has found that some women don’t understand the crucial need to have adequate automobile insurance coverage in the event of a serious accident. Susan Ament educates women on these needs every day in her practice and in seminars that she presents throughout the year. The next few months can bring with them some of the most challenging driving conditions in Delaware. Whether you are traveling locally or planning a trip to visit friends or family out of state this holiday season, it’s important to take some extra precautions when driving during the holiday season as well as into the winter months. To best avoid unpleasant situations, follow these safety suggestions: Perform routine maintenance. One of the easiest ways to avoid car mishaps is to drive a safe vehicle. Check and rotate your tires, get a tune-up, and have your oil changed regularly - at least every six months. Keeping up with these tasks ensures that your vehicle will be in top driving condition for Delaware’s oftentreacherous winter weather. Prepare for inclement weather. Due to the unpredictability of East Coast weather conditions, it’s always a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Emergency kits include items that can help signal others in times of distress, enable you to make minor repairs, or keep you protected from excessive temperatures while stalled. These kits can be purchased for as little as $30.00 or you can make your own. Some items that you might want to include are blankets, water, road ares and tools. or more ideas on what to include in your vehicle emergency kit, speak to your auto insurance agent or visit www. redcross.org. Drive defensively. Just as the old adage goes, sometimes the best offense is a good defense. When driving, be on the lookout for erratic drivers, slippery roads, snowdrifts, and other unusual conditions. Never drive at speeds that would prevent you from taking necessary corrective actions, particularly in the evening when ha ards are more difficult to see. A little extra vigilance and a lot of common sense go far in keeping everyone safe during the holiday season and throughout the winter. If we all take these simple protective measures we can significantly reduce the

number of serious accidents that occur on our state’s roads and highways. Sadly, every day in our law practice, we see victims seriously injured in automobile accidents due to another person’s negligence or reckless driving. Be sure to follow these guidelines to protect yourself and others during one of the most wonderful times of the year. WHAT TO DO IF INVOLVED IN A MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION 1. Stop your Vehicle. Never drive away from the scene of a collision, even if it’s a minor collision. The vehicles should remain where they are unless they interfere with traffic. Turn your hazard lights on, and set out cones or other warning devices if you have them. 2. Call 911 or the Police. Even if there are no serious injuries, call to report the collision. An officer will be sent to file necessary reports and exchange information, and will call for medical personnel if needed for injuries. 3. Take Photos. Use your camera or phone to photograph the collision scene, document damage to the vehicles, and depict how the collision took place.
4. Retrieve Relevant Information. Record the names and contact information of the other drivers or witnesses; license plate numbers; the make, the model and the colors of other vehicles; insurance information; and the exact location of the incident;
should be examined by your family doctor or emergency medical professionals.
5. File a Collision Report with the Police. In some circumstances, the police will not come to the scene of a collision. If this happens, you should still contact the police to report the collision. A police report may help you make a claim with the insurance companies.
10. Know your Automobile Insurance Policy. The insurance process will be much easier if you know and understand your policy benefits and co erages before a collision. Never wait until after an incident to learn this information. or e ample do you know if you have a deductible, rental car coverage or enough wage loss coverage? If not, call your insurance agent or insurance company directly and find out
6. Contact your Insurance Company. Report the collision to your insurance company - even if the collision was not your fault. 7. Do not give a Recorded Statement over the Telephone. Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance adjuster without an attorney present. 8. Seek Medical Attention. Often injuries are not readily apparent in the hours, or even days, following a collision. Unless you are absolutely sure you were not injured, you

9. Keep a File. eep a file with all of the relevant information regarding the collision in one location for easy reference.
If you or a loved one suffers the unfortunate event of a motor vehicle collision or work related collision, the Personal Injury Group Attorneys at Morris James LLP will guide you through the process of obtaining the maximum compensation for your injuries to which you are entitled under the law. Helping Your Child With College Planning their children’s interest in making the final college decisions. hese concerns are reasonable; however, they may cause needless worry, stress and anxiety for both parents and students.
By Dr. Patricia H. Smith
M
any parents/guardians worry about their involvement in their children’s college planning process. Your student – whether a potential biology major, engineering major, pre-law candidate, or basketball or football team hopeful – has a great deal to consider in making a college choice and paying for college. As parents, you may be confused about how to get involved. Understandably, parents have concerns about what colleges their children will attend, as well as, what the cost will be and how to pay for it. Some parents regard college planning as complicated and are unsure how to successfully help their children navigate the process. Many parents will read college planning books and articles, and attend college planning meetings and fairs, but struggle with balancing their interest versus
54 I Winter 2017/2018
Parents’ Engagement Although teenagers want to assert individuality and independence, research has found that young people rely on their parents and educators for information and advice about college. Parents engaging in the college planning process can help reduce students’ worry, stress, and anxiety. Further, their involvement in the college planning process can support and help their children plan, organize and set aside time to engage in college planning (Romer and Bouffard, 2014).
navigate through the college planning process. We have developed strategies that foster parents and students working together on college planning. I suggest that parents: •
Parents’ involvement supports both parents and students working together to: • elect the best college fit for the student; •
Locate scholarships and other financial resources to pay for college;
•
Evaluate how much student loan debt your family can afford;
•
Engage in the college major choice;
•
Use information such as the N to select college ma ors and careers.
Parents and Students Working Together As an experienced and informed Independent College Consultant, I have guided and helped families
Create a college planning “plan” depicting the student’s and family’s goals, values, and beliefs. Creating a college plan can help parents and students have less stress, anxiety, and frustration. he purpose of the college plan is to create clarity for the parents and students and to provide school counselors, teachers, and C preparation providers with an understanding of how to help the students and parents with their college planning goals.
•
Help the students organize the overwhelming amount of college materials that they will most likely receive. Once you have created a college plan, you will be ready to do this.
•
Identify the members on your children’s college planning team (teachers, school
counselors, independent college planning coach, and C tutors . his team will help them prepare and perform well on standardized tests C , search for colleges, complete college applications, and apply for financial aid and scholarships. •
Don’t forget to encourage the student to work and manage the college planning “plan” to ensure proper execution and that deadlines are met.
•
naly e all college financial aid and scholarship information to assist you and your child with selecting a college that is family-backed and affordable.
Finally, with college being a huge family financial investment you have a good reason to want to be engaged in the college planning and selection process. hese steps hopefully will engage you in the process and help your child stay focused and select a college that is family-friendly, satisfying and rewarding.

Henlopen Chiropractic and Acupuncture “Over the years, I have advertised in many publications and can honestly say that I have never gotten the response that I have with Sussex County Women’s Journal. The Journal is unique in that it educates our community while being professional and personal. My patients (new and old) love reading the articles and often take multiple copies to give to friends and family. nd not only is it ying out of my lobby, I often receive calls from patients all over the county who have read my article and are interested in care. Not to mention how great it is to be working with someone as hardworking and driven as Barbara! I am proud to be part of SCWJ for the service it provides to the community.”
Terri Pippen The Medicine Woman
“I have advertised with the Sussex County Woman for several years. I am always being told by my clients that they see my advertisement and it reminds them to call my business and make an appointment for a service or to enroll in one of my classes. This has been a wise business decision I made that has helped my business become the success it is”
Chris Rementer Budget Blinds
“We advertise in the Sussex County Woman for a few reasons. First, it is a good read, second, it’s an opportunity to go into a little more detail to reach the more educated customer and third the readership definitely represents our clientele. We stay because it gets results.”
“We’ve had the pleasure of working with the Sussex County Woman and Delmarva Parent since 1994 and love the response we get from their papers. Month after month, we consistently received feedback from existing clients and new customers who read our articles and appreciate the tips we pass along courtesy of the magazine.”
Luanne Holland and Barbie McDaniel Delaware Hospice
“The County Women’s Journals have been a great tool for Delaware Hospice to reach and educate the community on Delaware Hospice’s programs and services. Directed to female readers who are caregivers and decision makers, the Journal provides health information for all types of symptoms and illnesses. It has increased community awareness on how to live a better life and provides options of care for our community members.”

Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore I advertise with the Women’s Journal because it is more personal than straight advertising. Articles help us relate to prospective consumers by sharing real stories about Easterseals services that have made a real difference for local people in our community. In addition, readership is off the charts as I frequently have people tell me that they recently saw my ad i.e. at a doctors office months after it was published. n addition arbara and the staff have been extremely supportive of Easterseals.

CONFUCIUS CHINESE CUISINE Here Is What Our Customers Say:
Confucius Chinese Restaurant was opened in the spring of 2004 in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Shawn Xiong, the owner, had previously owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmington prior to relocating to the beach area. Since then, Confucius has been named the best Chinese restaurant in the Delaware Today Magazine, Sussex County Woman and favorably mentioned in various newspaper and magazines. here er you go you probably will find a Chinese eatery in every shopping center that offers pretty much the same items such as lo miens and chow miens. The Confucius menu is more focused on items you don t usually find in those places. The name Confucius lets people know it is Chinese, but with a delicate refined gourmet restaurant and not a fried rice and egg rolls fast food eatery like a McDonalds. There are different popular dishes for different customers depending on their individual personal taste. If you like spicy food, we offer dishes such as Hot Pepper Chicken, Cumin Beef or Kung Pao Shrimp. f you like fish almon and lack ean auce Steam Halibut or Crispy Whole Black Sea Bass
are all excellent choices. f you are a first time customer they encourage you to tell your server what you do or do not like, and they will offer the right recommendation for you. Confucius believes that every customer deserves special attention, if you order something that you don’t like, they encourage you to send it back and try again AT NO COST. They want customers to have a pleasant dining experience. Reservations Are Recommend.
15 of us were in Rehoboth Beach over the past weekend. We had decided to try Confucius based upon friends recommendations and Yelp reviews. They were very accommodating with the reservation and by providing a nice space, including a high chair. We started with assorted appetizers, including spring rolls, various dumplings, beef sticks and the like. Everything was delicious. So on to the main courses. Eggplant in black bean sauce, Singapore Rice Noodles, Hunan Beef, Chicken with Broccoli, 5 Spice Duck (they will warn you it is very hot-we asked for it to be on the mild side, and still had some heat, but we loved it!) Shrimp and scallops with walnuts (my favorite dish of the night), soft shell crab, chicken fries rice and a few other dishes that never made their way to my end of the table. Portions are large, but the food was so delicious we had very little left over. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant - everything is prepared to order, and they deserve all 5 stars. First time here, and it won’t be our last. Loved the seafood hot and sour soup; chicken hot and sour was excellent as well. Spicy shredded duck was under-spiced, but that was my fault for telling server I did not want it too hot, and she bent over backwards to make sure it was mild. Can’t wait to try other menu items. Our server was outstanding. Could not have been more attentive and accommodating. Co-owner Danielle was a pleasure to talk with as well. This is not your typical fast-food Chinese restaurant, so be prepared to pay up for quality. - Glen L., Pikesville, MD Awesomely amazing with a side of extravagance!” - Steven B., Baltimore, MD The food here is beautiful. The setting is elegant. he drinks are fine. t is a nice chan e from the seafood staples of this beach town. I always over order. It is worth it. - Badhoh G., Rehoboth, Delaware
