EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER SAVES LIVES Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. While breast cancer can occur in men, it is most often found in women. Sometimes breast cancer is found due to symptoms experienced by the patient but many times women with breast cancer do not experience any symptoms. This is why talking with your health care provider about having an annual mammogram is so important. Recommendations by The American Cancer Society for who should be screened have changed slightly but it is still recommended for women with low or moderate risk of breast cancer who are age 40 to 45 years have the option to have a mammogram. By 45 years of age, all women should have a regular mammogram. Women who are at a higher risk for breast cancer may need to have mammograms or other screenings such as an MRI or Ultrasound done earlier in life or more often. When detected early, the survival rate for breast cancer increases dramatically. If you are a woman 40 years or older or if you have a family history of breast cancer, regardless of your age, talk with your provider about having a mammogram. Nanticoke Health Services in Seaford offers the latest in mammograms using Genius™ 3D MAMMOGRAPHY exams.
What is 3-D mammography? Approved by the FDA, 3-D mammography uses multiple images, or X-rays, to recreate a 3-D picture of the breast. Using these multiple images, a 3-D mammogram provides more detail than traditional mammography, which uses a single image. During the 3-D exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. Any woman who needs breast screening should consider 3-D mammography. In particular, women with dense breast tissue may benefit from 3-D technology because of the layered images that make it easier for doctors to catch breast cancer early. 3-D also helps catch more cancers and helps doctors see the cancer size much better.
Why 3-D mammography? There are several reasons why finding a provider that uses 3-D mammography is important. Because this technology uses multiple images, doctors have a clearer picture of breast masses, making it easier to detect breast cancer, detect it earlier and reduce false positives. When using 2-D mammography, overlapping tissues is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks or repeated testing. A 3D mammogram can reduce the tissue overlap effect. A study on breast cancer screening using the Genius exam was published in the June, 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Findings include: • A 41% increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers. • A 29% increase in the detection of all breast cancers. • A 15% decrease in women recalled for additional imaging. If you would like to schedule a 3D mammogram at Nanticoke, call 302-628-1507. For more information about this important breast health procedure, please contact our Mammography department at 302-629-6611 x 8630 or visit www.nanticoke.org/mammo.

The Modern Optician
Opticians today play a vital role when it comes to being completely satisfied with your eyewear. I started in the eyewear business almost forty years ago and have seen many changes in the eyecare business. The one constant has been an opticians goal to successfully fit a client’s eyewear to the best of his or her ability. Opticians vary as in any field so as the optical director I’ve worked over the years to educate and train our opticians. Knowledge, skills, tools and experience all enter into the equation for a successful eyewear fitting. Delaware Eye Optical staff is well trained and educated in fitting eyewear using today’s most up to date lenses and a frame collection that is both broad and deep in styling. Lenses we fit are primarily digital and use materials such as trivex with applications of anti-glare, and transitions (photosensitive), mirrors tints and other needed applications. The experience of working with ophthalmology has afforded a vast background of visual needs over the years and prepared our staff to deal with not only day to day requirements, but also more complex issues such as prism, high powers, light sensitivity, and other complex eyewear fitting needs. Knowledge accumulated over the years and the experience we have gained cannot be emphasized enough. These experiences with various optical issues is shared among the staff and allows us to handle any visual needs you might have quickly leading to your satisfaction. Fitting eyewear by an experienced

optician should include the ability analyze an individual’s prescription or prescription analysis. The ability to visualize a final outcome based on the prescription, frame, measurement’s, and type of lens from a design and material aspect is critical. Educating clients to why certain features and benefits are of value to their overall satisfaction. The ability to source these products from various vendors from a lab for lenses and frames from manufactures is reflected in our inventory choices. These relationships again come from experience in creating niches for various optical needs and style requests. The evolution of fitting digital eyewear has changed how opticians measure an individual once the frame is selected. Medium and higher level digital lenses are custom and require more information to maximize the prescription once the frame is selected. We use electronic fitting with a software application called N-Form. The optician actually takes two pictures one for distance and the other for reading. These two electronic measurements provide
visual axis, facial shape (wrap), optical center heights, and vertex distance so our digital lenses can be designed and manufactured using as worn technology. What does that mean to you? The lenses are personalized taking into account your prescription within the frame you’ve selected. Complete satisfaction is more likely, ease of any change in prescription should be enhanced and comfortable vision in all fields, distance, intermediate, and near. The high-performance category of lenses we provide are our most advanced design and have the highest satisfaction rate of any category. These lenses are “like wearing a single vision lens and seeing all fields clearly and effortlessly” is what many of our clients have said. Recently we ran a report on our turnaround time and it showed our main lab is processing lenses at an average of four days. That being said add on applications such as transitions, anti-glare, mirror coating, and our high-performance lenses can extend turnaround a few days more. Currently DEO has a lab on site for finishing

work, repairs, edging capability, tinting, and many other services you might need. There are products we do send out such as Maui Jim, Kaenon, Costa Del Mar, and Oakley which do their own in-house lenses. These labs sometimes have prescription limitations at which point we can step in and do our own inhouse lenses in most cases. Delaware Eye Optical understands you have many options to purchase your eyewear. We feel having a well-trained optician with experience using todays tools and fitting state of the art lenses in a great frame that fits and looks great takes time, personal attention and sometimes patience. Our personal service and eyewear fitting knowledge beats an inexperienced online purchase any day of the week. You can schedule an appointment with any of tour staff and prescriptions from outside doctors as well as walk ins are welcome. We look forward to fitting your next eyewear and completely satisfying your visual needs.

CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Fat Removal pockets of excess fat. This non-invasive procedure represents an alternative to surgical liposuction by using a novel cooling technology that permanently removes fat cells from treated areas.
How does CoolSculpting Work?
Michelle Parsons, MD
is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. The biggest trend in cosmetic surgery is the expansion of non-invasive body countouring technology, the best of which is CoolSculpting, which is now available at ReNove Medical in Rehoboth Beach. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat. Arms and legs can be treated as well. Unlike some other non-surgical technologies that release fat from fat cells, such as Vasershape and I-Lipo, Coolsculpting destroys the fat cells thereby eliminating treated fat permanently, as our body does not make new fat cells. Coolsculpting is a unique non-surgical treatment for removal of fat from localized
The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas.
What are the most common areas to be treated?
Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. These are the areas that CoolSculpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can
be treated and eliminated by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the muffin top, waist, brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.
Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting?
Before
The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. It is common to have numbness or decreased sensitivity in the treated area lasting 1 to 2 weeks. In some instances patients will develop a burning tingling sensation 5 days after the treatment which can be controlled with a Lidoderm patch. There are virtually no long term negative side effects.
What does CoolSculpting feel like?
Our treatment room is very comfortable where you will relax on a padded recliner. When the CoolSculpting is applied to the fatty area to be treated there is a sensation of pulling that feels slightly uncomfortable for the first 5 to 10 minutes. Gradually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. There seems to be a natural endorphin release during the treatment so patients are very relaxed during the treatment, which takes an hour. Some people have fallen asleep during the treatment! A typical treatment session lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how many areas are treated. During the treatment, we have
After Netflix available so you can watch a movie or catch up on your favorite television program. Busy moms find this time to themselves a real treat! We also have Wi-Fi.
How quickly do people see results?
After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells are actually killed and will be eliminated by the body over time. Many report seeing changes in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. The full benefit will take as long as 60 to 90 days.
How long to results last?
Once the fat cells are frozen, killed and naturally eliminated by your body, the results are permanent. You can still gain weight in other areas if you over eat and don’t continue to try to remain fit. If you are interested in learning more about CoolSculpting and would like to see if you are a good candidate for this effective treatment to lose unwanted fatty areas, please call us today to set up an appointment to meet with Dr. Michelle Parsons at ReNove Medical, Health Rejuvenating Spa, in Rehoboth Beach, 302-227-1079. Delaware Hospice, Helping Delawareans for 35 Years Founded 35 years ago F by Delawareans for
Delawareans, Delaware Hospice has grown our programs as the community’s needs have changed. Delaware Hospice supports anyone at any point in their health journey. Our dedicated staff works to provide individualized care for each of our patients and their families. Many of our families wish they would have called us sooner to help with their support system. Here is how several of our families received personalized care from us-
Donald became weaker from cancerous polyps and his wife, Jessie, needed help. Neither Donald nor Jessie were prepared to forego curative treatments, and were not ready for hospice care. Delaware Transitions was able to provide Jessie with nonmedical visits, advice on where to find assistance, volunteer help, and checkin calls. When Donald was no longer able to get around, he expressed a wish for an electric chair and Delaware Transitions identified an outlet for him to purchase his chair. Jessie said, “[Delaware Transitions] took good care of both of us, prepared me well, and has kept in touch and offered help...” -Jessie Brown, Dover
Delaware Palliative is the liaison between Margery and her doctor. Unable to get to her appointments, a nurse practitioner prescribes the appropriate medicine for Margery’s pain. Since Delaware Palliative joined Margery’s support system in conjunction with her doctor, she has seen tremendous improvement in her mobility and wound care. A volunteer also stops by Margery’s home to visit and Delaware Palliative has put her in contact with an agency to get a wheelchair ramp installed at her home. “I recommend Delaware Palliative to all my family and friends. I am so grateful for everything that they have provided me.” – Margery Lamb, Smyrna
Hospice care is about ensuring a quality and comfortable life when the challenges and complications of life, family, and spirituality are mounting. From the very first moment Delaware Hospice walked into the DiBuo home, Dorothy and Roger knew they were in good hands. The nurse listened to every concern and took the time to answer questions. “Everything

was explained to us and we knew what to expect on this journey. We could not have asked for a better chapter to be lived in Mom’s life. The support given by Delaware Hospice was impressive.” -Fr. Roger DiBuo, Bear
New Hope, “…was the greatest thing to happen at the worst time.” For children who have lost a loved one, it can be a time of turmoil and New Hope offers ageappropriate activities to help process their grief. The activities are designed to stay with the children as they grow into adults. As part of the program, each child receives a New Hope Bear. “My daughter cherished her bear. The day she called to tell me that the dog had taken it as a chew toy… was a hard day for us all, even after 15 years! The relationship a 26 year old has with her New Hope Bear is amazing.” -Valerie White, Smyrna As Delaware’s healthcare needs continue to develop, so will our programs. This will ensure that Delaware Hospice will continue to be a trusted community partner for the next 35 years. Getting to the bottom of an uncomfortable issue. Incontinence is difficult to deal with. For many women, it makes life complicated. They know every bathroom in the mall or every rest area on the highway. And many are just too embarrassed to talk to their doctors about it. “While many women are afraid to open up, the truth is, this is a very common problem and there are treatment options available,” says Elsa Goldstein, MD, of Bayhealth Colon Rectal Surgery with offices in Milford and Lewes.
WHAT CAUSES PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS?
Patients experiencing problems with urinary or fecal incontinence can now make an appointment at the Pelvic Floor Center. The Pelvic Floor Center has state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities to accurately diagnose incontinence disorders. Dr. Goldstein sheds some light on pelvic floor disorders and the options available for treating urinary and fecal incontinence.
People should seek treatment when they become symptomatic. Once the problems begin impacting your life, it’s time to look for help. Women will many times make adjustments to their lifestyle to accommodate the symptoms rather than seeking help. Some women will stop traveling or going out because of bathroom concerns. Others won’t eat all day if they know they have to go out.
WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR?
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS?
The pelvic floor is a muscular structure that supports the pelvic organs of the bladder, uterus, vagina, and rectum. WHAT ARE PELVIC DISORDERS?
The most common pelvic disorders involve the weakening of the pelvic floor. That’s when you have bladder, rectal, or uterine prolapse. Prolapse is when the body parts essentially fall out of position. This prolapse causes incontinence with urine or stool. More rarely, some people have pelvic floor problems because the muscles are too tight, but this is not very common. WHO TENDS TO HAVE PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS?
Women are far more likely to have pelvic floor problems. The most common age group is women over 50. Men can have problems as well, but women are far more likely. Some younger women may also experience pelvic floor disorders if they had a large baby.
The main cause of pelvic floor disorders is a combination of childbirth and aging. That’s why women are more likely to have issues. Nearly one third of women will sustain a tear during childbirth. Once you get older and the aging process is underway, women tend to notice the symptoms. WHEN SHOULD I SEEK HELP FOR PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS?
The most common symptoms are urine or fecal leakage. Some women will experience leakage when they cough, sneeze or exercise. Other women will have leakage no matter the circumstances. With fecal incontinence, some women may leak gas or stool. There’s also an increased urgency, where you may have limited or no warning that you need to use the bathroom. WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?
The most common treatment is pelvic floor therapy. Most people respond well to the therapy and do not need any further intervention, such as surgery. We create an individualized plan for all of our patients. It’s not a one-size-fits-all model. We tailor
the plan to the patient to ensure they have the best results. We also work with patients on dietary management, as many people respond well with it too. HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT TAKE?
For many people, treatment is once a week for a few months. It’s very similar to going to physical therapy. There’s nothing preventive that can be done, so it’s important women seek treatment when they notice symptoms. ARE THERE ANY RISK FACTORS?
Women who have given birth are at a higher risk of developing pelvic floor problems. Additionally, anyone who is diabetic, people taking certain medications, and anyone who has undergone radiation treatment to the pelvis are at a higher risk. Those with neurological disorders and a history of rectal surgery are also at a greater risk of developing pelvic floor problems. HOW COMMON ARE PELVIC FLOOR PROBLEMS?
This is a very common problem and women should not be embarrassed. Nearly 20 percent of the population has pelvic floor problems. This is a silent affliction. Women suffer in silence and aren’t telling their doctors or family members. They don’t seek treatment and instead just make lifestyle adjustments. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We work with women to create a specific treatment plan and restore lifestyle and dignity. There’s no longer a reason to suffer in silence. Dr. Goldstein treats patients at Bayhealth Colon and Rectal Surgery in Milford and Lewes. To make an appointment call 302-503-2700 or learn at Bayhealth.org/Colon-and-Rectal.
Depending on diagnosis, patients may work with a variety of Bayhealth specialists (pictured above, left to right): Physical Therapist Jessica Bayer, DPT, WCS, CLT; Urologist Antoinette Ptak, MD; Nurse Practitioner Wendy Surguy, MSN, APRN, CWOCN; or Colon Rectal Surgeon Elsa Goldstein at the Pelvic Floor Center.

Invisalign Is Perfect For Adults
I
Invisalign offers a much better way than the old mouth-full-of-metal braces. It is perfect for adults who want to straighten their teeth without all the embarrassment. If you’re an adult who wants to straighten your teeth, the old metal braces just aren’t going to do the trick. Invisalign offers a solution that’s much better and more effective. Straightening teeth has always been something that you either did in childhood or didn’t do. Invisalign gives you another option as a child and as an adult. Let’s look at the reasons why braces for adults have never been cool. The Stigma Let’s face it; have a mouth full of metal when you’re 35 just isn’t right. There’s a stigma for kids who are wearing braces and it’s ten times worse for adults. It just doesn’t look right on an adult somehow, like acne or hip-hop clothes. Invisalign helps by removing the stigma. The Invisalign aligners are almost invisible. You have to look really close to see them. This means that nobody in your office or circle of friends has to know that you’re getting your teeth straightened. Cleaning And Other Annoyances The cleaning that you have to do with braces is another reason adults don’t get them. Who has time for all of that? It’s tough enough to deal with all of the other daily annoyances. Invisalign treatment doesn’t require any additional cleaning you just take the set of aligners out and brush and floss as normal. The aligners are changed every two weeks or as often as the doctor prescribes. It’s just like soft contact lenses. And you can also take them out anytime you want to but should be worn as close to 24/7 as you can. Braces Can Hurt More Than They Help Braces can actually cause more damage to your teeth. The reason is that there are certain areas
12 I Fall 2017
that you just can’t get to with your toothbrush while they’re in, therefore the risk of tooth decay increases. With Invisalign aligners, you can slip them off any time you need to brush your teeth and there is no risk whatsoever to your perfect smile. And They Work Finally, there are failures as well as success stories when it comes to braces. This is not the case with Invisalign technology. It’s highly effective because it uses computer imaging to custom-design your aligners. Chiropractic and Cancer Dr. Tracy Hudson
Dr. Sheila Burek
Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.
If you are a cancer patient facing treatment and are considering an integrated approach to your care, chances are you may have heard that complementary modalities like acupuncture and massage therapy can improve your overall wellness during treatment. You may also be seeking support from a nutritionist or may have considered naturopathic therapies. But have you considered including chiropractic care? The fact is, chiropractic can play a valuable role in an integrated care plan. Cancer patients often experience a number of side effects, caused by either the cancer or the treatment used to fight it—sometimes both. Research has shown that, in many cases, supportive therapies may help patients manage those side effects and reduce the risk of treatment delays. One such therapy involves chiropractic care. This supportive care service is a nonsurgical, drug-free option for some patients with pain or stiffness in the neck or back, muscular tension, headaches, peripheral neuropathy, difficulty walking and other disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Like some other supportive therapies,
Dr. Sheila Burek is a Buffalo, NY native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.
misperceptions and misinformation have clouded some people’s understanding of the impact chiropractic care may have in a cancer care setting. To clear the fog, Dr. Jeff Sklar, Medical Director of Chiropractor Services at a nationally renowned cancer treatment center, responded to some of the most common myths surrounding chiropractic care.
vary in their degree of skill and methods of treatment, we offer a gentle, non-invasive style of adjusting with the goal to be pain-free. This approach may lead to patients experiencing quick and lasting relief from a number of musculoskeletal complaints common in cancer patients, including back and muscular pain and neuropathy.
Myth: Cancer patients should avoid chiropractors because they can break bones and spread the cancer. The research does not support such conclusions. In fact, a 2005 study, published in the journal, Seminars in Oncology Nursing, encouraged the use of chiropractic services for cancer patients, concluding that a review of written resources suggested it appeared to have benefits for relieving their pain and suffering. Your chiropractor will want to be kept up to date on your evolving condition, including the type and location of the cancer, current blood work, most recent imaging and the treatment regimen, in the interest of the delivery of care. We also know that this therapy may not be for every cancer patient. For example, chiropractic services may not be recommended when a bone metastasis is found or the patient’s platelet counts are low. Recommendations for chiropractic care should be made in close consultation with the patient’s oncologist.
Myth: Once you go to a chiropractor, you must keep going for the rest of your life. Continuing chiropractic visits is not mandatory, and some patients stop seeing chiropractors after their pain or other side effects have subsided. Those who continue to receive regular chiropractic care often choose to keep up the treatments because they believe the adjustments contribute to an overall sense of health and well-being. Many patients have reported sleeping better, having fewer to no headaches and experiencing fewer sinus issues, fewer colds and a sense of improved energy and vitality.
Myth: Chiropractic adjustments hurt. Although practitioners
Because cancer and its treatment may cause a host of side effects and other complications, Dr. Sklar recommends that cancer patients interested in chiropractic care look for a chiropractor not only trained and experienced in working with cancer patients, but one who works closely with a team of other cancer experts all focused on that patient’s care plan. While we do not treat cancer, chiropractic care can be an ideal component of an integrated, whole-person approach to cancer treatment. Know Where You’re Going … And Why! (It could save you money)
About Dr. Chao Dr. Philip Chao graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University and was Scholar of the House. He continued his studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, receiving his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (1984-1987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology (1987-1988). Dr. Chao has been interested in MRI technology since its very beginning – the first MRI scan took place in 1981 while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (19881990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in MRI on the first GE Signa 1.5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and specializations complete, Dr. Chao left the University of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of MRI in Wilmington, DE – a position he held for 14 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI Center in Delaware which uses the very latest technology: 3T MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest horizon for MRI. By: Dr. Philip Chao Did you know you can save $400 to $600 on your next MRI study simply by choosing where your MRI study is done? If your MRI study is done at a hospital or clinic-based imaging center associated with a hospital, you may have to pay additional fees (co-pay or coinsurance). Certain insurance companies routinely charge these extra fees without mentioning them before a study is done— even if you have your study “authorized.” It can be several hundred dollars. Insurance companies do not charge this extra fee if you go to an independent facility—such as MRI Consultants. In these facilities, your MRI is billed as an Office Visit. In such instances, your co-pay can be significantly less. Just ask your insurance company. Quality is important. So few people (including doctors) realize how important it is to have your study done on newer 3T or multichannel 1.5 scanners instead of older scanners. The older scanners just don’t “see” as much! If your study is done on an old scanner with just 1 channel, you can be pretty certain subtle things will be missed. We recently found a tibial non union which was only 1mm in size! This can cause a great deal of pain. See image. The resolution on older scanners and low-field OPEN MRI is insufficient to detect such small fractures. It just can’t see it. Higher definition is extremely important. We recently scanned a patient for a possible superior orbital vein thrombosis. The ORBIT study we performed at 3T definitively showed this isolated finding. 3T high quality pictures are like HDTV (as compared to blurry old snowy cathode ray tube pictures). 3T is just better. And, despite what you may
The County Woman’s Journal
Fracture
Orbital Inflammation
have been told, 3T only costs more for the person who purchases the scanner! For the patient, the price is the same. Quality seems to be unimportant to insurance companies (and even to some doctors). For them, an MRI is an MRI. Your co-pay is the same regardless of quality. Read the NY Times article: “The Scan That Didn’t Scan.” The author did not seem to know that the ACR, which accredits MRI units, has different criteria for different scanners. Weaker MRI scanners are not required to “see” as much as stronger scanners. And, surprisingly, there is currently no minimum level required in order for your insurance company to pay. None. Even the weakest scanner can be “accredited.” You may have to have your study repeated on a stronger machine (frequently at your own cost), but the medical profession and insurance companies are largely unconcerned. Understanding your pictures is important. At our facility you get to discuss your images with the radiologist (upon request). I do not know if this is even possible at other facilities. At MRI Consultants, patient reports are frequently done within an hour— sometimes before leaving the office. Also, all patients leave our office with a
Paralabral Cysts
CD of their images. We offer a quality and speed of care which is not often given elsewhere. At MRI Consultants, we do studies other facilities will not (or cannot) do. We do indirect arthrogram studies which frequently show MORE than direct arthrograms. IV contrast is used to see if there is a tumor, infection or inflammation. At 3T, the fat saturation is better and we are able to do thinner “slices” (or sections), which allows us to see very small tears. Even a small tear in your shoulder can be very painful.
Finding such small tears is one of the great things about indirect arthrography. A recent patient of ours had two labral tears with two paralabral cysts. According to “the literature,” these paralabral cysts are rare, yet I see them even without contrast in many of my patients at 3T in the hip and shoulder. This just another example of why 3T quality is better. Most doctors and orthopedic surgeons do not know this. 3T MRI simply shows more. Seeing more can reduce the need for surgery or, at the very least, make it safer. Be smart. Be certain. Use 3T.

Bellafill Restore Youthful Facial Volume Michelle Parsons, MD
is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine.
With time, age and gravity, our facial structures tend to lose some of the youthful volume it once had. The cherubic apples in our cheeks fall, leaving us with a drooping jaw line that becomes jowls, and deep lines form around the nose and mouth areas, known as the nasolabial folds. Fortunately there is a solution for these pesky issues of aging. Physicians can now treat their patients with an in-office procedure known as dermal filler injections. What are Dermal Fillers? Dermal fillers are medical products that are injected by a trained physician to fill in facial areas where volume has been lost, so that it is possible to lift those cheeks back up and fill in the deep lines around the nose or nasolabial folds, and the depressions around the lower mouth and chin areas known as the marionette lines. Treatments with dermal fillers are a wonderful way to restore a more youthful appearance. However, what has not been so wonderful is how long they lasted, which has been temporary, on average from 6 to 18 months, as the products are slowly reabsorbed and eliminated by the body. This has been a disappointing aspect of dermal fillers. But this is where the story in non-surgical facial

rejuvenation takes an upswing. Now there is a dermal filler that can fill in lines and sagging with much longer lasting results, results that can last five to ten years, if not longer. This product is Bellafill. What is Bellafill? Bellafill® is a smooth, collagenbased dermal filler with polymethyl methacrylate microspheres, or PMMA for short, that is injected by a physician to stimulate your own natural collagen to fill in areas in the face that have lost volume over time, due to aging and gravity. The collagen gel in Bellafill® provides immediate volume and lift so that results are seen right away and once injected, the PMMA microspheres stay in place and create a base that provides structural support and stimulate formation of your own naturally produced collagen for long lasting results. PMMA is a biocompatible material that has been safely used in medical implants, such as lens implants after cataract surgery, and other devices for more than 65 years. How long does Bellafill Last? Since Bellafill stimulates the body to produce it’s own collagen, the results of Bellafill can by quite long lasting. When the skin creates new

comparison, 1 in 4.7 females died of cancer, whereas 1 in 3.2 died of CVD • In 2010, 25.1% of by- pass and 32.9% of angioplasty patients were female. 30.3% of heart transplant patients in 2012 were female. Stroke • An estimated 3.6 million female stroke survivors are alive today. • Each year about 55,000 more women than men have a stroke. This is because the average life expectancy for women is greater than for men, and the highest rates for stroke are in the oldest age groups. • In 2013, stroke caused the death of 75,287 females (58.4% of total stroke deaths). In 2010, 530,000 females were discharged from short-stay hospitals after having a stroke. High Blood Pressure (HBP) • One in three adults in the United States has HBP. • Among women age 20 and older, the following have HBP: 30.1% of nonHispanic whites; 46.1% of non-Hispanic blacks and 29.9% of Hispanics. In 2013, 38,379 females died from HBP. They represented 53.3% of deaths from HBP • Among adults, 18.3% of white women; 13.4% of black women and 7.4% of Hispanic women smoke cigarettes. Diabetes Mellitus • Of the estimated 21.1 million American adults with physician-diagnosed diabetes, about 10.6 mil- lion are women; 6.1% of non-Hispanic whites, 14.6% of non-Hispanic blacks and 11.8% of Hispanics. • Of the estimated 8.1 million Americans with undiagnosed diabetes, about 3.0 million are women; 1.7% of nonHispanic whites, 2.3% of non-Hispanic blacks and 5.0% of Hispanics. • Of the estimated 80.8 million Americans with pre-diabetes, about 34.3 million are women; 28.9% of non-Hispanic whites; 27.8% of non-Hispanic blacks and 26.0% of Hispanics.. • In 2013, diabetes killed 35,737 females. • 319,000 females diagnosed with diabetes were discharged from short-stay hospitals in 2010.
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) (ICD/10 codes I20-I25) (ICD/9 codes 410-414, 429.2) • About 6.6 million females alive today have CHD. Of these, 2.7 million have a history of myocardial infarction (MI, or heart attack). • Among women age 20 and older, 1.8% of non-Hispanic whites have had an MI; 2.2% of non- Hispanic blacks and 1.7% of Hispanics. • Each year new and recurrent MI and fatal CHD will impact an estimated 405,000 women. • The incidence of CHD in women lags behind men by 10 years for total CHD and by 20 years for more serious clinical events such as MI and sudden death. • In 2013, 161,698 females died from CHD; 50,742 from MI. Overweight and Obesity • An estimated 31.6% of girls age 2 to 19 are overweight or obese; 29.2% non-
Hispanic whites, 36.1% non-Hispanic blacks, and 37.0% Hispanics. • Of these girls, 17.2% are obese; 15.6% non-Hispanic whites, 20.5% nonHispanic blacks, and 20.6% Hispanics. • An estimated 64.7% of women age 20 and older are overweight or obese; 61.2% non-Hispanic whites, 81.9% nonHispanic blacks, and 76.3% Hispanics. • Of these women, 36.0% are obese; 32.5% non-Hispanic whites, 57.5% nonHispanic blacks, and 42.9% Hispanics. These sobering statistics confirm, once again, that heart disease remains the number one cause of mortality and a major cause of morbidity (illness) in American females. Much remains to be done and the role of early childhood. The role of parents is crucial in the effective prevention of many of the above health issues. Starting early helps provide children with the best chances for healthy lives.

The sound waves emitted deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue. The beauty of Ultherapy ‘uplifting ultrasound’ is that it
Ultherapy works great for sagging jowls, where the skin is fatty, heavy and drooping. Ultherapy is able to reduce this fatty heaviness, tapering the jaw line, for a more youthful look. Ultherapy can restore a more youthful shape to the face from a square to the inverted triangle.
Nasolabial Folds
Ultherapy also works well to minimize the drooping of excess skin that we get along each side of the nose, or lower cheeks. You may think that you need to fill in these areas with a filler, but the real problem may be that fat and loose skin is just falling down due to the effects of gravity. With ultherapy we can target this area and minimize the fattiness and tighten up that skin. Again this will restore the more youthful balance of the face with the center of gravity higher in the cheek areas.
Neck
Ultherapy can tighten up that loose skin underneath our necks as well. The area that Ultherapy works the best is that area just underneath the chin and extending into that curve of the neck. Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a surgical neck lift. But if you have somewhat loose and fatty skin in your upper neck, hanging just beneath your chin, Ultherapy can improve this area, and improve your profile.

Perhaps one the most dramatic areas that Ultherapy can improve on without surgery is the eye area and creating a brow lift, helping to lift heavy drooping eyelids. Ultherapy can make the eyes appear more open,
more awake, rested and more youthful. This may be subtle change but this small difference can have a significant effect! Our clients really love this part of the Ultherapy results.
Before
Overall Ultherapy works wonders to taper, redefine your facial contours, while eliminating fatty, droopy areas, and lift and tightening skin around the eyes and underneath the chin, for a more youthful sculpted look. The stars in Hollywood do this treatment, and now you have access to this age defying procedure right here in Delaware at the beach. Dr. Parsons is pleased to bring this cutting edge highly sought after technology to you to help you look your best. If you think you may be candidate for Ultherapy, please give us a call to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Michelle Parsons. 302227-1079.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Ultherapy?
After just one treatment with no downtime, your skin will gradually shift back into a more youthful position. Improvements include a sleeker, more defined jawline and tighter skin on the neck under the chin. Sagging skin on the cheeks can be tightened and lifted, which in turn can
After
improve folds from the nose to mouth, folds from the mouth to jaw, and drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look in general. The results of Ultherapy are permanent, just as the results of a face-lift are permanent, 0f course, your skin will continue its natural aging process. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery but looking for meaningful results.
TESTIMONIAL One week after my Ultherapy Treatment, my husband, after being out of town for a couple of days asked me “what’s different about you,” he was staring at my face! Not having told him about my treatment I innocently said “what do you mean?” His response was “I am not sure but your face looks different.” I asked “different good or different bad?” He replied “different good, looks stretched.” I was surprised that the results were noticed that quickly. I found the treatment to be bearable, certainly wasn’t pain free, but tolerable. I was very happy when it was over! For the past 2 weeks following the treatment my face has been tender which is a reminder that the treatment is continuing to work! I would highly recommend it to all! K.M. – Ocean City, MD.

TUCK or ROLL? Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a body contouring procedure that is great for individuals who have loose, excess skin that does not improve with diet or exercise. It will remove loose, excess fat and skin in most cases, restore weakened or separated muscles creating a firmer, more youthful figure. Popular following pregnancy, massive weight loss or whenever a flabby abdomen with weak muscles impairs body contour, this procedure is commonly coupled with liposuction to achieve the most optimal body contours. Traditional Tummy Tuck In addition to the incision across the lower abdomen, a traditional tummy tuck involves an incision around the navel. Excess skin is removed, muscles are tightened and liposuction is performed to achieve the best result. This surgery removes skin from above the navel down to the pubic area that has been compromised by pregnancies, genetic laxity or obesity. The scars normally heal very nicely and are well worth the trade off! Mini Tummy Tuck A single incision is made in the pubic area, which will be placed as low as possible and can range from a few inches to the entire span of your abdomen. Through this incision, Dr. Malek will remove excess skin, tighten muscles and, more than likely, perform liposuction first to further refine the area. The ideal candidate for a minitummy tuck has laxity and protrusion
below the navel and is usually recommended for those who don’t have enough excess skin above the navel to require a traditional tummy tuck. Extended Tummy Tuck If you have excess skin in the love handles or hips, your incision can be made longer to address this problem. This procedure includes a tummy tuck in the front of the abdomen and transfers the lift over the hip to the side of the thigh to improve contour of hip and thigh areas. The incision is usually low so it will not be visible, even when one is wearing low-rise clothing. Recovery Patients will be able to return to a desk job in a few weeks depending on the type of procedure performed, and patients with jobs that require more physical labor, may need more time. A fifteen-twenty pound weight cap is advised for the first six weeks of recovery. Vigorous exercise such as running, swimming, core conditioning and weight training are also advised against in the first six weeks. Walking is recommended as soon as it is comfortable for the patient as it aids in blood circulation and recovery. FAQ: Am I a good candidate? A tummy tuck is suitable for men and women who are in generally good medical health, have realistic expectations and who have excess skin and tissue in the abdominal area. Women who have had several
pregnancies may find the procedure useful for tightening their abdominal muscles and reducing saggy skin. A tummy tuck is also an option for those once obese and still have excess fat deposits or loose skin around the belly.
may lead to additional laxity of the skin. This will also help achieve the best contouring results possible. Patients who plan to become pregnant in the future should postpone this procedure until they are done having children.
When is the best time to have a tummy tuck? Dr. Malek advises tummy tucks be performed when patients are at their ideal weight prior to surgery since losing weight after the procedure
How much does the procedure cost? Pricing varies based on the type of tummy tuck along with other procedures performed. Please call or schedule a consultation to learn more.

increasing the percentage of patients 65 years and older that have a documented assessment of fall risk and are evaluated for independence with activities of daily living.” CHEER’s mission is to promote and maintain the highest quality of life and independence by developing and providing services that meet the continuing needs of senior citizens 50 and over. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, LRHC provides bilingual, culturally appropriate, high-quality, cost-effective, primary and preventive medical care to residents of SCD with emphasis towards serving those with unmet health care needs who face significant barriers to quality medical care. LRHC’s mission is to be a Center of Excellence, which provides quality patient centered care to the diverse members of our community including seniors and its medical services are available to all individuals regardless of gender, age, race, ethnic origin, religion, language, sexual orientation, or ability to pay. Together, CHEER and LRHC will partner to ensure the effective delivery of on-site ambulatory health care services and health care education to CHEER members and guests as well as members of the general public allowed to use the CHEER facilities. This is a proof of the pickup, no changes have been made! Please approve or submit your changes through ATOL.
According to CHEER Executive Director, Ken Bock, “ This is a fantastic opportunity to partner in a way that will allow CHEER to complement its current client health care offerings and improve access to health care for seniors throughout the county!” To do this, LRHC will initially place medical providers at the CHEER Ocean View site and then eventually at the CHEER sites in Greenwood, Milton, and Long Neck. All four CHEER sites were selected because they are located in areas of high-unmet healthcare needs. The need for improved access to health care services in SCD cannot be overstated as SCD is federally designated as a Medically Underserved Area, a lowincome Health Professional Shortage Area, (HPSA), a Dental HPSA, and a Mental Health HPSA. During an average month, 192 persons are born, 195 persons die and 327 persons move in to SCD from another area, Source: U.S Census Bureau (7/13 to 7/14). The vast majority of the people moving in to SCD are senior citizens who are retiring and relocating to live here. Overall, in 2015, the SCD population was 212,900 and is expected to grow to 251,900 by 2035. Source: Delaware Population Consortium Looking back, in 1990, 28% of the SCD population was 55 or older and by 2030, that number is expected to be 43%. The largest increase in our population will come from persons age 65+ as this age group is projected to grow from 51,000 in 2015 to 78,000 in 2035. Superwomen In The Bedroom? Low or No Sexual Desire (LD)
You’re working all day, multiple jobs and responsibilities, dealing with the kids or grand kids, running errands, cooking, cleaning and too tired to even think about sex. Would you just rather roll over and go to sleep? Maybe you have no desire for sex after menopause. Consider sex coaching as your best strategy to bring back the fire in you - the Superwoman in the bedroom! Bedroom Silent Killer The number one concern we hear from women is they have very low or no sex drive, and yes, even men may suffer from LD. Sexless couples are a new phenomenon in our life time, not just postmenopausal women, even women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s may experience LD. Far Reaching Concern Although studies agree that the majority of women consider sexuality a critical determinant of quality of life. Furthermore, in the same survey, low or no desire was demonstrated to significantly impact women’s self-
esteem, quality of life, cause emotional distress which may lead to relationship issues. Some signs and symptoms that may indicate a low sex drive include a woman who: • Has no interest in any type of sexual activity, including self-stimulation • Doesn’t have sexual fantasies or thoughts, or only seldom has them • Is bothered by her lack of sexual activity or fantasies
• Power struggles and relationship issues: If relationship issues are not resolved, resentment, anger, frustration may build up, and LD may be the result. • Infidelity: The reason and/or consequence of the incident may be your partner’s lack of sexual desire. • Depression. Depression can change the body’s biochemistry and therefore reduce libido.
What are some of the dynamics that may be attributed to LD? • Hormonal Cocktail: Changes in our hormone levels may decrease your desire for sex. • Aging: The decline in estrogen during perimenopause may wreak havoc on a women’s sex drive, and dry vaginal tissues, resulting in painful or uncomfortable sex may deter her from having sex. • Body Image Issue- If women are feeling unattractive, they are less likely to want to engage in sex. • History of Sexual abuse or abusive relationship: A women may not want to express physical love if she had old wounds or pain to heal. • Fatigue: Fatigue is problematic in women of all ages, even ladies in their 30’s. • Unskilled partner/lover: Maybe your partner skills are lacking in the bedroom department. This problem may continue until she doesn’t want sex anymore.

Introducing A Breakthrough Gum Regeneration No Scalpel & No Sutures Treatment for Gum Recession By Dr. Stewart Perim, D.M.D., M.S.
What is gum recession? Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gum line. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when it comes to brushing the teeth. Why should gum recession be taken seriously? When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gum line and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness. What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) ? The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is scalpel and suture free. Traditional gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue or soft tissue grafts in order to rebuild the gum line. This soft tissue would be sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it healed. While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable
#
results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Pinhole Surgical Technique. How is Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) performed? During the Pinhole Surgical Technique, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are
accelerated osteogenesis. This will improve periodontal and orthodontic outcomes (growing bone and gum). The benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique are many: • Less discomfort for the patient after treatment • Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting • No need for uncomfortable sutures • No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools • No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate

Walgreens Helping Older Adults Learn How to Avoid Injury from Slips and Falls To help reduce the risk of injury from slips and falls, and to educate seniors in its communities, Walgreens offered injury prevention tips and advice when it hosted a Senior Day at its stores nationwide. Falls are the leading cause of serious and even fatal injuries among adults age 65 and older, and on average more than 1-in-4 older adults suffers from a slip or fall each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to encouraging customers to talk to pharmacy staff about fall injury prevention, Walgreens stores have informational materials available, including a CDC “Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults” identifying ways to make the home safer. Customers who are Walgreens Balance® Rewards members will receive 500 bonus points if they ask a pharmacy staff member about fall injury prevention.* Balance® Rewards customer loyalty program membership is free and can be obtained at checkout. “Falls threaten older Americans’ independence and safety and generate enormous economic and personal costs that
affect everyone,” said Debra Houry, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. “Together, everyone can reduce the risk of falling and prevent fall injuries.” Rina Shah, vice president of pharmacy operations for Walgreens, said, “With our Walgreens presence in communities throughout America, and our trusted relationship with customers, we have a great opportunity to help older adults and caregivers make homes and other environments safer and avoid injuries from slips and falls. These injuries are often highly preventable and education is the key to prevention.” Many factors associated with aging can elevate the risk of falling, a risk that continues to increase with age, according to the CDC’s STEADI program, Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries. These include: • Diminished eyesight from conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts • Medications that can make an individual dizzy or drowsy, including some overthe-counter medicines • Vitamin D deficiency that can affect bone, muscle and nerve health

• Poor balance Such factors underscore the need for preventive measures, including
bathroom grab bars, adequate stair and passageway lighting, exercises to improve
balance and a home environment uncluttered by items that a person can trip over.

The Effects of Obesity The rising incidence of obesity in both children and adults has gained the attention of health care providers worldwide. While much of the attention has been focused on the association between obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, ongoing research is demonstrating a link between obesity and many other diseases. The American College of Gastroenterology recently convened a task force to assess the impact of obesity on GI diseases. Their findings showed several GI diseases are more common in individuals who are obese. For example, there is a 50% increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in an obese individual, a 50-100% increased risk of erosive esophagitis, and a 2-3 fold increase in gallstones. Results from recently published research studies indicate that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most commonly seen diagnoses in patients who are overweight and also have metabolic syndrome. NAFLD can lead to changes in the liver that could ultimately result in more severe diseases, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. Liver cancer is one of the few types of cancer with a rising incidence, attributed to the increasing number of Americans considered overweight or obese. A correlation between
The County Woman’s Journal
abdominal obesity and pancreatic cancers has been identified. Endometrial cancer, post-menopausal breast cancer and colon cancer account for 2/3 of cancers attributable to excess body weight. In these cancers, being overweight is one of the most common risk factors, included with smoking. What can you do to decrease your risk of GI diseases and GI cancers, as well as improve or eliminate the symptoms of GI disease you may currently be experiencing?
First, know your numbers. Body mass index (BMI) is the commonly used measure of obesity. BMI calculations are based on height and weight. BMI calculators are available on line on many different web sites, or you can ask your doctor to help you calculate your BMI. Overweight is defined as a BMI from 25-29 kg/m2, and obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or above. Second, if your BMI places you in the categories of overweight or obese, commit to lifestyle changes that will reduce your risk of GI disease. Just a moderate reduction in calories will enable you to lose 1-2 pounds per week. A slow weight loss is the healthiest approach, and one that is easier to maintain than diets that promise rapid weight loss. Focus on healthy choices and portion control.
For best results, supplement your changes in diet with an increase in physical activity. Long sessions at a gym aren’t necessary. Thirty minutes of moderate activity per day is recommended. Moderate activity can include walking, cycling, dancing, even housekeeping. Anything you do on a consistent basis will provide health benefits.
If you have questions about the association between obesity and GI diseases, or need more information about how to control your risk through lifestyle changes please contact Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates at (908)483-4000. Our physicians and nurses are here as a resource for you.

Fall 2017 I 27
Profiles E. Nancy Richardson I was born in Baltimore, MD and graduated from Infant of Prague High School in 1963. I had quite a few secretarial jobs in the next 8 years before I landed an administrative position at Honeywell in July, 1971 where I stayed for 30 years until retirement. Two weeks later I met the love of my life and married in November, 1973. In 1998 at 53 I discovered a small lump in my right breast which everyone thought was benign and was told to go treat myself to a nice piece of jewelry and stop worrying. It was cancer and I chose a lumpectomy done January, 1999, had four chemo treatments and 33 radiation treatments. I continued to work and tried to maintain my sense of humor and enjoyed the very nice gold bracelet I bought myself. In the next 16 years I decided to enjoy my life more by retiring, moving to Rehoboth Beach, DE, traveling to visit my step children in FL and taking a yearly cruise. In November 2014, 16 years later I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in my left breast. Again I chose a lumpectomy but they didn’t get it all so after much discussion my husband and I thought a double mastectomy was the way to go. In January 2015 I had the surgery and was informed cancer in my right breast would have been back within a year or two. Hopefully I dodged that bullet with my decision. I went onto six treatments of chemo, 34 radiation treatments all of which took there toll. Because I had cancer in 19 out of 20 nodes I was hit with some serious chemo and radiation. 2015 was a rough year but I survived and many will. Being told you have cancer is devastating. No one wants it but it’s a fact of life and you must learn to deal with it. I have made wonderful friends in DE and still have great friends in MD. I have tried to maintain my sense of humor, I read a lot, still take cruises and walk just about every day. I discovered the DE Breast Coalition thru my friend Nancy Mann and it has been quite enjoyable. The statement “it is what it is” is so true and all we can do is help each other, hold onto your faith and do the best we can with what we’ve been dealt.
Amanda Jarmon My journey facing cancer began back in January of 2016. After a self check, and many appointments/scans later I was diagnosed with Angio Sarcoma of the left breast. I underwent a left mastectomy, chemo, & radiation in 2016. Then in March of 2017 I had a reoccurrence in the right breast and went for another mastectomy. I was a wife, a mother to two young boys, I exercised, ate well, and thought that I was doing everything right. Now after being cleared (I have to go every 3 months for scans),I continue to live life as normally as possible. I am back to work at Coastal Home Care doing what I love the most, helping others and trying to make a difference in the community one person at a time. This would not have been possible without amazing family & friend support system, the help of Women Supporting Women, The American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen getting involved & speaking to other survivors. Even though we may have two different types of breast cancer, the process is the same for us all. I have learned to accept the new me, even if it’s hard some days. I continue to pray & still get anxious when I have upcoming appointments and scans. I’ve come to understand that this will be my new life; my family and I are learning to manage the anxiety and focusing on making each day as positively as possible! I am finally able to take control of my life again one day at a time. And my family & I are learning to embrace our story and share it with others. Even if it helps just one person going through a similar situation ten it makes it all worth it in the end.

Nancy Cilio Mann I moved to Rehoboth Beach in August of 2000 from New York City. I continued to travel back and forth to New York in order to continue my work as a Project Manager for Corporate Real Estate in the Financial Sector. My work was interesting and I never wanted it to end. The beach kept calling my name and in 2003 my husband Tom and I decided to answer the call. In 2005, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was a stage III with lymphatic involvement; at that time I was given a very grim view of my situation. My surgery was done at Beebe Medical Center where I received excellent care. Two weeks prior to the beginning of my aftercare Tunnell Cancer Center opened at the Beebe Campus on Rt24. Being the forever optimist that I am, I returned to work immediately after surgery and chose to do chemo therapy and radiation while I continued working a shortened week. Not only did it seem like the logical thing to do at the time, I also think it gave me hope and encouragement to fight. I was put on many prayer lists and my church started a support group. Not long after that I was introduced to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition where I became a mentor. I realized how important it was to recognize the desire to survive and that encouraging others is one way to reinforce your own HOPE! Ten years later I was diagnosed with breast cancer a second time, this time I had a partial mastectomy. I now consider myself a true poster child for success. Having found a great diet and exercise program I continue to be active and enjoy the beach. In just a couple of weeks I will turn 69 years old and I feel blessed to be a survivor and mentor. I have purpose!
Pam Ward I have four children, my daughter is 13 and my triplets boys are 11. I had my first mammogram when I turned 40. I was scared to get it done because everyone says it hurts...it wasn’t so bad. I had a biopsy done at the Breast Center and it came back positive for DCIS. All that I thought was that I wanted it out. I talked to my dr and decided to go to the Breast Center at Mercy Hospital. My doctors office told me to call Women Supporting Women to ask about lending me a electric recliner and it was wonderful, I don’t know how I would have done it with out it. You just don’t know how much you use your arms and abdominal muscle until you can’t. They also gave me pillows to put under your arms to help you keep your arms up and away from your sides. I had a double Masectomy, DEIP flap reconstruction and lymph nodes removed March 2016. Sue from Woman Supporting Women called me regularly to check up on me to see how I was doing. Everyone was so helpful at WSW. I am grateful to my family & friends that all helped me, I couldn’t have done it without them.

Profiles Tina Callahan My survival story begins in September 2016. I had a sharp pain go through my right nipple. When I felt the area to figure out why it was hurting, I felt a lump right away next to my nipple and knew it was not normal. I went in to see my OB/GYN for a full exam. He felt the lump too. But, the way it felt (hard and smooth), he felt as though it was a cyst. To play it safe, he scheduled a mammogram and ultrasound. It was detected right away. Now, it was time for the biopsy. The day of the biopsy, I walked in with confidence that it was just a cyst. And then my surgeon dropped the bomb! The lump was Breast Cancer (Invasive Ductal Carcinoma)! My doctor, Dr. John Riley with PRMC and I started to discuss our options. Right away, I knew I wanted a full mastectomy. My life is worth more than my breast. A double mastectomy surgery was scheduled on November 21st and 3 lymph nodes were removed. After my surgery, I was all bandaged up and it took me about a week to accept the new me. After about a month, I met with my Oncologist, at PRMC to discuss possible chemo. Turns out I scored a 17 which meant I did not need to endure chemo and would instead would be going on the hormonal therapy pill for about 5-10 years. So, starting January 17th, my radiation treatments began. 30 treatments total. My skin is now red, it looks sunburned and I am starting to become sore. I have been tired emotional and physically. But, I refuse to lose this battle. I am a Breast Cancer Survivor. I claimed that every day. I have already won the battle. With this experience, it has changed me. Alfac helped me financially and inspired me to become an Aflac agent. I have a different outlook on life and I have learned to appreciate things and not let the little things bother me anymore. Life is too precious.

Peninsula Home Care Named “Preferred Provider” at both Peninsula Regional and Nanticoke Health Services Long-term Partners Deepen Their Relationship to Further Ease Patient Transitions
A health care organization has been
A locally owned and operated home named the “Preferred Provider” for two regional health systems on the Lower Shore. Peninsula Home Care in Maryland (PHC) has received the designation from Peninsula Regional Health System, while Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke (PHCN) has attained the same endorsement from Nanticoke Health Systems. “These partnerships allow for greater opportunities to provide topquality care in our communities,” said Nancy Bagwell, area director of operations, Peninsula Home Care. “The continuum of care helps to successfully transition each patient from the hospital or nursing facility to their home, ultimately avoiding the revolving door back into the hospital.”
Steven Rose, RN, MN, President/ CEO of Nanticoke Health Services, agreed that continuity of care is crucial. “Seamless coordination from acute to post-acute care is essential for patients recovering from injury, illness, or surgery or managing a chronic condition.” While they are not always aware of it, patients (or their designated care givers) have a choice as to which home health care company will continue their care. This selection can often take place during a time when they may be overwhelmed with the many critical healthcare decisions that must be made. Dr. Peggy Naleppa, MS, MBA, FACHE, President/CEO, Peninsula Regional Health System and Peninsula Regional Medical Center said that by “bringing leading healthcare providers together, it helps to make the choice less stressful for patients and allows them to be confident they
More Accolades and Honors for PHC In addition to the Preferred Provider designations, PHC recently received more good news. In Delaware, Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke was honored with the Superior Performer Award through the annual SHPBest Program. The program ranks the overall satisfaction of more than 2,200 Medicare-certified home care providers across the nation. The award is given to the home care agencies ranked in the top 20% from survey criteria that includes overall care, coordination of care, patient education, team consistency and patient satisfaction. “This award validates the efforts our team makes every day to better communicate with our patients and each other,” said Beverly White, branch director of PHCN.
Across the state line, the team at Peninsula Home Care in Maryland’s Salisbury and Ocean Pines branch offices have achieved “Deficiency-Free” ratings upon completion of a major performance survey executed on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Agencies are evaluated on patient rights education, positive patient outcomes, medical error prevention, appropriate staff qualifications, emergency preparation and performance improvement data. “A deficiency-free rating is equivalent to an entire classroom of students getting an A+ on an exam,” said Jennifer Kline, branch director, PHC. “It is a stamp of approval from the state after a thorough inspection process. We did not have a single inefficiency, which is an accomplishment that very few agencies are able to achieve.” RYLAN D A M

“... These partnerships allow for greater opportunities to provide top-quality care in our communities,” said Nancy Bagwell, area director of operations, Peninsula Home Care ...” are receiving expert care as they continue to recover at home.” Locally owned and operated on Delmarva for more than 30 years, PHC and PHCN have treated nearly 40,000 patients combined since 1985, providing an array of services that merge highly personalized treatment plans with hi-tech services. They offer skilled nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as nurse’s aides, and patients and their care givers have 24-hour access to Peninsula Home Care support.
Technology such as electronic medical records integration, tele-health, E-STIM and in-home chemotherapy help patients recover where they are most comfortable – at home. “Concern about recovering from a medical procedure or illness is anxiety producing, especially for older patients,” added Bagwell. “Providing closely coordinated continuity of care helps patients heal more quickly and comfortably. We are thrilled that these two health systems have placed their trust in us.” For more information about PHC in Maryland and PHC at Nanticoke, visit www.peninsulahomecare.com.

Home & Garden
Hard toCover ...
Deciding on which treatment to cover a normal window with can be difficult enough but sometimes you run into an opening that requires a little more effort. Sliding glass & French doors can be troublesome, arches & eyebrows over windows along with ovals, circles, octagons, triangles, rhombuses, and trapezoids, are all out there and may be letting in too much sun! That long skinny window next to your front door that we call a sidelight can also throw a monkey wrench into the works. Besides letting in natural light and providing you with a look to see who is at the door, it can also sometimes let passersby have a clear look right into your home. Through the years we have installed many different types of shades and blinds onto these openings but the best thing we have ever done, for this, was to start putting shutters on them. Plantation shutters are the most versatile answer to these issues because they really are the only covering that has a treatment for everything mentioned. For sliders there are both bypass style and bi-fold style which now have the ability to be folded over to lie against the wall next to the slider instead of perpendicular to the wall as in the past. This greatly reduces the projection into the room while at the same time letting you completely open up the glass to the light and the view beyond it. It is an improvement over the bypass because while the bypass doesn’t invade into the room when opened it does always have at least one panel’s width covering the glass. For French doors we can design a shutter that fits right over the glass. We attach the frame to the door and can even design the frame around the door handle for that stunning custom look. The panel can swing completely open so that you may clean the glass and for those instances when you need maximum light but most of the time you will just operate the louvers for light control and privacy. This covering is also very functional for a door as the entire covering is attached so that there is nothing to swing away from the glass as it moves. It’s a good choice for a door that will be used often.
Arches, eyebrows, and other specialty shapes such as ovals and triangles are another chance for shutters to standout. Almost always, in this category, a template is required. It doesn’t get much more customized than that and it shows. What you end up with is a gorgeous and unique piece that was made just for that opening. We get the best reactions from our customers on those jobs. They often didn’t even think that it could be done. Often homeowners struggle with whether to let the difficult dictate the basic or to let the basic dictate the difficult and the best way to deal with this is to be armed with the facts. That’s where we come in. We can let you know what is available for your situation and help you figure out which way you want to go about it. Every situation is different and for instance, other than shutters, there are around a dozen other ways to cover a sliding glass door. It can be overwhelming to many but with a little guidance the answers start to show themselves so that you may consider the whole job instead of just part of it and whether you are going to do it all at once or in stages, a unified look, even with different types of coverings, can be accomplished. We would love the opportunity to work with you to achieve that. You can call in (302856-6799) to be contacted by one of our consultants who will come to your home with tons of samples from the best brands. They can measure and price right on the spot to complete an order and get started that day or just leave you a little more educated with more to think about and decisions to be made. Your Hot Deck Solution In recent years retractable awnings, and solar shades for decks, porches and windows have become a very popular addition to homes. Decks and patios are great places to relax in the gentle weather of Spring & Fall but, many find that their outdoor space is just too hot to endure come the Summer season. Installing our retractable Awnings or Canopies will not only prolong your time outdoors but can also reduce cooling costs by blocking solar heat gain from the windows of your home. Studies show that temperatures can be up to 20 degrees cooler under the shade of an awning and because they are retractable, they give you the best of both worlds; sun when you want it and shade when you need it. Exterior vertical drop solar shades are another solution to shade the interior of your home. Featuring commercial grade solar mesh, they can block the sun’s heat while still providing visibility to the outside and are available in a variety of colors and styles. Patio Systems, Inc. is your local shading expert and has been providing a variety of shading solutions for your friends and neighbors since 2001. Servicing both Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware as well as some locations along the Maryland shore, our design consultants will meet with you to help you decide which of our durable products best suits your needs. When selecting an exterior shading solution in this coastal area, it’s important to keep in mind that unpredictable high winds as well as the deteriorating effects of salt air can have a big impact on your investment. Patio Systems works with the industries top manufac-

turer, offering top-quality products at competitive prices and boasts the best warranty in the business. Every year folks like you are choosing our awnings for their leisuretime enjoyment. Now is the time to get a head start on the hot season to come. Protect your loved ones and control the weather on your own terms! Spend Less Time Maintaining Your Outdoor Space and More Time Enjoying it! Many of today’s homes have decks or are now often being built with screen porches as a standard feature. Exposed to the elements, decks and patios are often simply too hot or too cold to use much of the year. Studies and testimonials indicate that a sunroom addition, or conversion of an existing porch, is very likely to become the most used room in the house. They offer protection from bugs, dirt, pollen and bad weather while preserving the outdoor feel of a deck or patio. The building industry is strongly committed toward pre-fabricated custom modular enclosure systems which install quickly to eliminate the stress and mess of a stick framed construction project at your home. Our 4 season rooms have insulated foam core walls insulated UV blocking glass and can be made in any style to compliment any home. North America’s fastest growing sunroom and window company, Sunspace Modular Enclosures, of
Toronto, Canada, has made it
easy to select from their state of the art product line. As the authorized dealer on Delmarva for Sunspace products, Patio Systems offers turnkey enclosures with aluminum and vinyl products. A breezy porch solution is our superior 4-track vinyl-pane enclosure system with choice of screens and tints. To schedule a consultation please call Patio Systems, Inc. in Lewes at 302-644-6540.

Fall Safety Tips By Regan Roberts Deck, CMI
We may have had what felt like one of the hottest summers ever, but fall is rapidly approaching and that means now is the time to start preparing for the change of seasons. Regular Performance Tune-Ups - like the ones included in many Service Agreements - keep you (and your HVAC company of choice) up-to-date on your equipment. In addition, periodic filter changes keep the air flowing through your home evenly, increasing your comfort and the efficiency of your unit. Finally, the simple act of thinking about your system during these checks and filter changes will help you notice if your comfort level starts dropping. I always recommend having your HVAC equipment checked for proper operation twice a year, but this service becomes even more important when your heating system is fuel burning. Fuel burning heating equipment produces carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas that, if released into your home, can cause headaches and nausea (often mistaken for flu-like symptoms) at low levels and, at high levels, can result in memory loss and even death. The effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health and the concentration and length of exposure. But your HVAC system is not the only source of carbon monoxide production in your home: kerosene and gas space heaters; chimneys and furnaces; furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves, and fireplaces; gas stoves; generators and other gasoline powered equipment; automobile exhaust from attached garages; and tobacco smoke all release carbon monoxide. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that every home have a carbon monoxide alarm. For full coverage of your home, you can add one carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home as well as additional detectors in sleeping areas. There are a variety of detectors on the market today from a hard-wired combination smoke/CO detector to a plug-in alternative. For the plug-in detector, all that is needed is an available outlet and the battery backup activates automatically should your power fail. So, during this change of seasons, while your heating system is being checked to ensure proper ventilation and operation, make sure your CO detectors are working properly and that everyone in your family knows the signs and symptoms of a carbon monoxide leak. As always, at Custom Mechanical we are happy to answer any questions you may have. Contact us about any of your electrical, heating, cooling, carpentry, plumbing and home performance related issues - on the phone, in person, via e-mail … even on Facebook! Our Retail Store offers parts and supplies as well as answers to your product or pricing queries. Our Comfort Advisors are available for free estimates and information about financing and manufacturer rebates. Finally, our brand-new, redesigned for 2014 website offers more homeowner tips like these as well as specials, on-line scheduling and more detailed information about Custom Mechanical, the people that make us great and the services we offer. Contact us anytime! Locally, 302-539-5177. Toll free, 800-233-5177. Or on the web, www.custommechanical.com.

Home & Garden With over 100 years combined experience among Scott’s Sleep Specialists plus the most trusted names in bedding, Scott’s provides you better quality, better sleep, for better health, for less money.
Comfy Bed Is Key To Healthier, Happier Life Researchers at UC Berkley confirmed recently what has been suspected for years – deep sleep is the fountain of youth. “Nearly every disease killing us in later life has a causal link to lack of sleep,” Matthew Walker professor at UC Berkley said of his April 2017 research results. “We’ve done a good job of extending life span, but a poor job of extending our health span. We now see sleep, and improving sleep, as a new pathway for helping remedy that.” Deep sleep improves every function of the body from beauty to physical and intellectual ability, the research found. In order to help facilitate a good night’s sleep, experts recommend creating a comfortable oasis suited to the way you sleep. Invest in a quality mattress to your desired firmness, good pillows and soft sheets. Find a trusted retailer such as Scott’s Furniture in Bridgeville where knowledgeable staff can help you navigate the large selection. bed bases, specialty bed pillows, Egyptian cotton sheets and mattress protectors. Your pillow is one-fifth or 20-percent of your sleep surface, and a very important part of good rest. Many people surround themselves with pillows to provide extra support and comfort while they sleep. Scott’s stocks nine different types of bed pillows from three different pillow companies. The foundation of any sleeping oasis is a quality mattress. It can be a daunting experience choosing the right one with so many brands and styles to choose from. Every brand has its strength and Scott’s features DelMarVa’s largest selection of TEMPUR + Sealy Inc. mattresses and bed bases. TEMPUR-PEDIC is America’s most recommended mattress. Stearns & Foster is America’s #1 brand of luxury bedding. Sealy is the most trusted name in sleep. Scott’s on U.S. Route 13 North in Bridgeville, has a mattress or sleep set to fit any budget, any support level, any comfort preference and any sleep need. They will deliver for free most sleep sets and haul away your old mattresses. Whether Spring, Foam, Memory Foam, Gel

TESTIMONIALS FOR TAILORED LIVING As the National Publisher of the Woman’s Newspapers, I had an opportunity to work with many independent service professionals. I am personally inpress and proud to say, I never work with anyone who has a better work ethic as yourself. You are always on time and do exactly what you say you will do without hesitation. Your staff members are extremely polite, introducing themselves as they entered my home leaving me with a secure professional feeling throughout the project. I am happy to say I love my new office. Thank you, Elizabeth Kapke, Publisher, CEO
We have enjoyed the fine services of Tailored Living. Bill and his staff arrived on time and completed the job beautifully with no mess left behind. Our garage floor and cabinets make life so much easier, and when it rains on our outdoor parties, it is a comfortable retreat. - Barbara, Milford
I’m really glad I selected Tailored Living and Bill Nickerson to design and build my two master bedroom closets. The process was easy and Bill and his employees did an excellent job. They were prompt, courteous and were very accommodating even when I made changes. I highly recommend Bill and will refer him whenever the opportunity arises. - Joyce, Selbyville
I got your email from Scott Barnes at the corporate headquarters. I wrote to both him and Dan concerning the tremendous job that Howard and his crew did re-doing my garage floor. They corrected all the problems, and even really, really, impressed me with how they performed and the night and day difference between their work, and that done by the previous franchisee. Please pass on my compliments to Howard and his crew and I greatly look forward to giving your franchise as many referrals as I can. Thanks for helping me get this in the rearview mirror. We went from a kind of dangerous eyesore of a garage, to something we can really feel proud of. - Gerry Matteson

Murphy Beds: A Great Addition at the Beach! Many of us remember the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy gets trapped in a Murphy bed! Those days are long gone with modern Murphy bed designs but the advantages of the wall bed remain. Being at the beach, we all get a lot of company but real estate is expensive. We need a way to dual-purpose our rooms without sacrificing comfort for our guests or styling for our décor.
Bill and Janis Nickerson opened Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach in early 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native. This move completes a commitment Bill made 20 years ago to “retire” to Sussex County. The Tailored Living franchise allows Bill to pursue two of his passions of woodworking and entrepreneurship. It has been an exciting second year completing many pantries, garages, home offices, Murphy beds, and closets in and around DelMarVa. Let us design a solution for you!
The Murphy Wall Bed offered by Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach offers a great solution. We custom design the bed in twin, double, or queen size with side storage and decorative panels to enhance your room. We also offer a library style that hides the bed with sliding bookshelves and lighting for reading and accent. Avoid the discomfort for your guests of foldout couches while enjoying the benefits of reclaiming the guest room in your home. A Murphy bed instead of a standard queen bed will save 30 square feet of floor space when the bed is closed! Use that found space for a home office, play room, craft room, whatever you like by calling your Tailored Living Organizational Specialist to design a Murphy bed for your home.

TERMITE & PEST SOLUTIONS Born and raised on the Eastern Shore, Service is the backbone of my business . -Dean Bennett, Because Local Matters Just like you, my day starts right here; I’ve been in the pest control business for almost 24 years but I’ve been a local to these shores all my life...born and raised. Growing up here has shaped my life and how I do business. It’s why family and commitment come first, and why service and responsibility are part of every job I do. And with every job, it’s important you know I’m only ever a phone call away. The same goes for our technicians. Each one is professionally trained and state certified and that’s important. But just as important to me is that each one treats you and your home with respect, courtesy and professionalism. In fact, we treat your home like our home because in a way, it is. So no matter what your pest control need is, we can help because we are your true, local pest control service team: residential or commercial, builder, realtor or property manager...mom or dad. We’re here when you need us because we’re here all the time.
Testimonials The Milford Public Library being a public building for all, we were experiencing many issues with cockroaches, called Bennett’s , they responded to us with their expertise and professional knowledge and staff to assist us to eliminate our issues. A few months later after signing contracts with them, we experienced a bed bug problem, immediately they were finding a solution, Dean Bennett spent many hours researching how to handle this problem in a library where the heat treatment could not be used and within days had our situation under control and found a maintenance program for regular prevention. Dean, and all Bennett employees are professional, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. Recently I experienced an issue with bed bugs. I called around to several different pest companies in Baltimore, MD and I came across Bennett Termite & Pest Solutions. I spoke with Bruce for over 40 minutes, he answered every single question I had. He was very informative and detailed about the process not missing a beat. The next day I told him I wanted to hire them for my treatment he did a conference call with himself and Dean(Owner) and there after Vinnie and Dean came out a few days later and did the heat treatment. Very professional, informative, fast and efficient. I work for a housing office in Baltimore and we plan on using this company for some of our client’s needs. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone. It’s worth every dime and you will have a peace of mind bug free.

Our World In Photography
C.M.BAKER PHOTOGRAPHY
In 1987 I started C.M.Baker Photography with a goal to provide quality photography service to the Delmarva area. Since then, C.M.Baker Photography has expanded and evolved just as the photography world has. From film to digital, and weeks to develop to instantly printing photos on site, C.M.Baker Photography has many services to offer today’s client looking for photography services. Printing photos onsite started about 10 years ago. We were able to capture the shot, take the card out and print out a 5x7 or 4x6 about 45 minutes after the photo was taken. Boy, have things changed! For events, we now can take photos in front of a background or green screen with limitless choices, and have the photo print out in about 15 seconds. This is great for birthday parties, corporate events or fundraisers. We can even include your logo or text on the 4x6 or 5x7 image. With wedding packages, you will also receive 10, 8x10 photos printed onsite from earlier in your day that will be on display at your reception. Recently our onsite printing experiences have expanded even more as we now have two photo booths! We have a classic black, indoor photobooth that adds a fun experience for your guests to any event. We come to your event loaded with props

and ready to have fun! Our second photobooth is inside of a 1969 Shasta Compact Camper and is perfect for your next outdoor event of any kind! We have had so much fun taking our Shasta Shutterbug all over the state and surrounding areas! Upon reserving either photobooth for your event you are able to personalize your photo strip size, color and text. This makes a wonderful favor for guests to remember your celebration or providing advertisement for your business event. Something else that has emerged over the years? Social media! Social media and technology have become a huge part in today’s word. Website photos and head shots for your LinkedIn page or business website are an important part of today’s advertising. We have enjoyed coming into many local businesses and colleges and taking head shots for current employees or new graduates to help them start off on the right foot toward their career. In addition to the newer services being offered, we are still providing the classic wedding packages, engagement sessions and event photography. In 30 years, C.M.Baker Photography evolved just as the world around us has. Prices and more information can be found on our website cmbaker.com. Dear Donna, This note is extremely belated, but since this is the season for giving thanks I really wanted to write you. Thank you so much for the time you took with Susan and me back in the beginning oft the summer. Buying a bathing suit was almost impossible for both of us, and for the first time, you made it both productive and fun. Then you added alterations and door-to-door delivery, we couldn’t have asked for more. In addition to the service, it was so nice to have such a selection of suits. We have recommended your shop to a number of people from this area who vacation at the Delaware beaches. Thanks again for your help, Happy Thanksgiving! -Carol

“I would like to thank the Women’s Journal for the opportunity to be part of their publication. Barbara is wonderful to work with! I have received many comments from readers who have seen my articles and who are now loyal clients. The feed back has been great!”
Beth Berger
Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition “We thoroughly enjoy working with the Sussex County Women’s Journal. For the past six years, it has allowed us to reach a large group of readers to share information on DBCC programs and events. Thank you for being so responsive to our requests and so available to meet our needs.”
Dr. Tracy Hudson
Henlopen Chiropractic and Acupuncture “Over the years, I have advertised in many publications and can honestly say that I have never gotten the response that I have with Sussex County Women’s Journal. The Journal is unique in that it educates our community while being professional and personal. My patients (new and old) love reading the articles and often take multiple copies to give to friends and family. And not only is it flying out of my lobby, I often receive calls from patients all over the county who have read my article and are interested in care. Not to mention how great it is to be working with someone as hardworking and driven as Barbara! I am proud to be part of SCWJ for the service it provides to the community.”
Terri Pippen The Medicine Woman
“I have advertised with the Sussex County Woman for several years. I am always being told by my clients that they see my advertisement and it reminds them to call my business and make an appointment for a service or to enroll in one of my classes. This has been a wise business decision I made that has helped my business become the success it is”
Chris Rementer Budget Blinds
“We advertise in the Sussex County Woman for a few reasons. First, it is a good read, second, it’s an opportunity to go into a little more detail to reach the more educated customer and third, the readership definitely represents our clientele. We stay because it gets results.”
“We’ve had the pleasure of working with the Sussex County Woman and Delmarva Parent since 1994 and love the response we get from their papers. Month after month, we consistently received feedback from existing clients and new customers who read our articles and appreciate the tips we pass along courtesy of the magazine.”
Luanne Holland and Barbie McDaniel Delaware Hospice
“The County Women’s Journals have been a great tool for Delaware Hospice to reach and educate the community on Delaware Hospice’s programs and services. Directed to female readers who are caregivers and decision makers, the Journal provides health information for all types of symptoms and illnesses. It has increased community awareness on how to live a better life and provides options of care for our community members.”

Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore I advertise with the Women’s Journal because it is more personal than straight advertising. Articles help us relate to prospective consumers by sharing real stories about Easterseals services that have made a real difference for local people in our community. In addition, readership is off the charts as I frequently have people tell me that they recently saw my ad (i.e. at a doctors office) months after it was published. In addition, Barbara and the staff have been extremely supportive of Easterseals.
Mary Beth French
Eastern Shore Permanent Makeup Working with the Women’s Journal has been a DEFINING BEAUTY AT THE BEACH wonderful experience. It has also been the most productive advertising investment I have made. Its placement in doctor’s offices, eye care centers, beauty salons and more truly targets my demographic. Many clients have mentioned they read about my business while waiting for appointments. Invaluable! Wide distribution allows for a much greater audience then most local publications. Lastly, Barbara and her staff are kind, energetic and dedicated to seeing me succeed. EASTERN SHORE

Thursday night is $13 Crab Cake night at The Brick. Enjoy one of our famous Crab Cakes with two sides for only $13. Our 4oz Crab Cakes are full of lump and jumbo lump crab meat, with only enough filler to hold them together. Normally our Crab Cake dinner is $26 and comes with two crab cakes, but on Thursday nights, we lighten up the portion and the price. It’s a perfect meal for dinner!

CONFUCIUS CHINESE CUISINE Here Is What Our Customers Say:
Confucius Chinese Restaurant was opened in the spring of 2004 in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Shawn Xiong, the owner, had previously owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmington prior to relocating to the beach area. Since then, Confucius has been named the best Chinese restaurant in the Delaware Today Magazine, Sussex County Woman and favorably mentioned in various newspaper and magazines. Wherever you go, you probably will find a Chinese eatery in every shopping center that offers pretty much the same items such as lo miens and chow miens. The Confucius menu is more focused on items you don’t usually find in those places. The name Confucius lets people know it is Chinese, but with a delicate, refined gourmet restaurant and not a fried rice and egg rolls fast food eatery like a McDonalds. There are different popular dishes for different customers depending on their individual personal taste. If you like spicy food, we offer dishes such as Hot Pepper Chicken, Cumin Beef or Kung Pao Shrimp. If you like fish, Salmon and Black Bean Sauce, Steam Halibut or Crispy Whole Black Sea Bass
are all excellent choices. If you are a first time customer, they encourage you to tell your server what you do or do not like, and they will offer the right recommendation for you. Confucius believes that every customer deserves special attention, if you order something that you don’t like, they encourage you to send it back and try again AT NO COST. They want customers to have a pleasant dining experience. Reservations Are Recommend.
15 of us were in Rehoboth Beach over the past weekend. We had decided to try Confucius based upon friends recommendations and Yelp reviews. They were very accommodating with the reservation and by providing a nice space, including a high chair. We started with assorted appetizers, including spring rolls, various dumplings, beef sticks and the like. Everything was delicious. So on to the main courses. Eggplant in black bean sauce, Singapore Rice Noodles, Hunan Beef, Chicken with Broccoli, 5 Spice Duck (they will warn you it is very hot-we asked for it to be on the mild side, and still had some heat, but we loved it!) Shrimp and scallops with walnuts (my favorite dish of the night), soft shell crab, chicken fries rice and a few other dishes that never made their way to my end of the table. Portions are large, but the food was so delicious we had very little left over. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant - everything is prepared to order, and they deserve all 5 stars. First time here, and it won’t be our last. Loved the seafood hot and sour soup; chicken hot and sour was excellent as well. Spicy shredded duck was under-spiced, but that was my fault for telling server I did not want it too hot, and she bent over backwards to make sure it was mild. Can’t wait to try other menu items. Our server was outstanding. Could not have been more attentive and accommodating. Co-owner Danielle was a pleasure to talk with as well. This is not your typical fast-food Chinese restaurant, so be prepared to pay up for quality. - Glen L., Pikesville, MD Awesomely amazing with a side of extravagance!” - Steven B., Baltimore, MD The food here is beautiful. The setting is elegant. The drinks are fine. It is a nice change from the seafood staples of this beach town. I always over order. It is worth it. - Badhoh G., Rehoboth, Delaware

Retiring? Downsizing? Or thinking about buying or selling your home? A Seniors Real Estate Specialist can help! A seniors Real Estate Specialist, or SRES is a REALTOR who has received extensive training in helping 50+ home buyers and sellers. Emma Payne and her team understand the decision to move can be difficult and can help you navigate your choices and want to serve as a resource and guide. You can count on The Emma Payne Group to guide you through the process and make your transaction less stressful and more successful. Our Passion is Real Estate…. I am a third generation Real Estate agent. I grew up in Annapolis Maryland and use to ride with my Grandfather to his office in Cape St Claire. My Parents both obtained their Brokers license when I was a small child and I grew up in the Real Estate office. My family taught me how important home ownerships is and how important it was to take care of our clients who become our extended family! The joy of riding by a house I have sold and see the family outside playing or the Christmas decorations lighting up the home will always remind me that I am one of the fortunate ones who get to do what I truly love. I started in Real estate in the 1980 left in 1985 to become a flight attendant and returned to the business in 2000. I opened Delmarva Resorts Realty in March of 2011 in Lewes Delaware and moved to our current location in 2013.I am currently both the Broker and Owner of the company along
with my husband Chris Payne. I specialize in Listing and marketing homes. When I first opened my business, I focused on the Failed to sell homes that other agents were not able to sell and started creating a track record of selling them in a few days or weeks on the market. We now host a Real Estate School at our office and offer the prelicensing courses for those wanting to start a new career. We have grown to 25 agents and have plans for continued growth and expansion in Sussex County (350) Testimonials “We went to the American Legion looking for a name of an agent to assist us in buying a home. We met you for the 1st time Oct 2014. Your teamwork & enthusiasm were contagious, your optimism encouraging & your work ethic solid. We went from trying to sell an aging 3rd floor condo to taking a leap of faith by listing and selling both condos and buying two houses. We could have never dreamed that as the outcome! “ Shirley and Pete “Chris and Emma really listened to what I wanted in a home. In two days of looking at houses it turned out that the first home they showed me was the perfect home. We are now all settled into our dream vacation home in Lewes, Delaware. I was amazed at how they had reviewed the homes prior to showing anything to me and the home they found was much less than I had told them I could afford to spend. They really put my interest first” Mary Berritini
