As the summer is approaching in our resort area, we anticipate many new cases of vulvar irritation and concerns. On a daily basis we take care of women who have pain, burning, itching, redness, rashes, and other discomforts “down there.” The vulva is the external genitalia that includes the clitoris, clitoral hood, labia minora, labia majora, outer urethra, and outer vagina. The vulva comes in various shapes, sizes, shades, and with slight variations. And, the vulva is made of sensitive skin with many folds and nerve endings. Here are some tips to avoid issues down there: 1. Use only super mild soap (such as Dove Sensitive, Aveeno, Pears) and water to wash down there. Some doctors recommend only water for washing. 2. No wash cloths or loufas. This may make little scratches on delicate skin. Your hand is best for cleaning. The skin on the vulva is similar to the skin around your eyes or the skin of your lips.

3. No perfumes or harsh chemicals. No fancy body wash, powders, or bubble bath. 4. Pat or air dry after showers. Some women use a hair dryer, this is fine ust ma e sure it is on a cool setting! 5. Sleep commando! (we recommend no underwear at night; encourage little girls to sleep this way, too.) Let the vulva breathe. 6. No scented tampons or pads. 7. No douching. The vagina is like a selfcleaning oven and will restore its normal pH if given time. 8. Wear white cotton underwear (at least cotton crotch) and avoid thongs. 9. Get out of those sweaty gym clothes or wet bathing suit ASAP. If you wear a two-piece swim suit, bring a skirt to the beach and slip the bottoms off while you aren’t swimming. 10. Shaving, depiliatory creams and waxing are all damaging and can lead to in-grown hairs. Laser hair removal or electrolysis is probably the best for vulvar skin if you must. 11. Coconut oil is a great vulvar moisturizer and is soothing. It can also be used

The County Woman’s Journal

as a lubricant for intercourse, EXCEPT when using a condom! (water-based lubricant should be used with a condom). Vaseline or calendula ointment can also be used as a skin protectant, but only apply to clean, dry skin because they will trap in moisture. 12. Wipe from front to back. This will also

prevent urinary tract infections. 13. Avoid baby wipes or the newer ushable wipes on the vulva. 14. Sugary stuff should stay out of the vagina and off of the vulva. No whipped cream, honey, etc. 15. After intimacy, rinse the vulva with lukewarm water and pat dry.

See your gynecologist if you experience and issues down there – we are happy to see you! Chronic irritation or a particular spot that seems out of the ordinary should be evaluated. Sometimes, a biopsy may need to be done, and often we can offer treatments beyond simple hygiene measures.

It’s Sunglasses Season!

By: Glenn Courtney, A.B.O.C. Delaware Eye Optical With sunglass season upon us, eyeglass wearers have more options than ever before when choosing sunglasses for protection and visual comfort. Over the years, we have had many request for prescription sunglasses as well as contact lens wearers choosing plano (non-prescription) sunglasses to wear over their contacts. Our inventory of sunglasses re ects those requests ranging from sport lines sunch as Kaneon, Maui Jim, costa Del Mar, and Oakley to fashion lines such as Tiffany, Tom Ford, Kate Spade, Barton Perreira, Porscha, Ray Ban and many others inventoried in most of our locations. For the most part the fashion lines carry a prescription digital polarized lens without any need for compensation due to curve. Sport active and even some high fashion lines require compensation for the prescription to enable wearer’s easy transition from everyday eyewear to the larger high base curve found today in many sunglass lines. Those large lenses with higher base curve or steeper curve of the lens enables the wraparound effect of fashion but more importantly protection from harmful UV and infrared light.

We want people to know that there are ways we can help…ways to improve the day to day quality of life as well as reduce the visible signs of varicose veins. By: Dr. Arvind Gireesh and Dr. Alfred Hurley, Cardiologists with the Nanticoke Vein Center Unfortunately vein disease is one of the most undertreated and under-recognized problems encountered in medicine. More and more we see how important the impact this disease can have on our patient’s quality of life. Varicose veins are veins that are dark purple or blue in color, can often feel like cords that are twisting and bulging in the legs; whereas spider veins are often purple, red, or blue and have the appearance of a spider web or tree branch. Most patients complain of significant swelling in the legs, that their legs are tired, fatigued, and even restless. The veins can also become very hard; they can itch, throb, and burn. Most of the time, leg pain from varicose veins is seen as an inconvenience. But sometimes, it can cause enough

Working together with our primary care providers in the community the team at the Nanticoke Vein Center is working to streamline care all the way from early recognition to finding the appropriate treatment for our patients. What are varicose veins? As a part of the normal circulation of blood, veins bring blood from the body back to heart. Normal veins are small and have valves that act like doors. These valves prevent blood from owing bac wards eeping the blood moving in the right direction. When these valves do not work properly blood pools in the veins and the veins become enlarged. If left untreated, they can become larger. Varicose veins are the enlarged and twisted veins in the legs. Varicose veins may get worse as you stand and can be very painful. What causes varicose veins? There are many causes for

varicose veins. Typically, they are more common in women than in men but that is not to say that men do not suffer from varicose disease. Genetics play a big role and often patients will tell me that varicose veins run in the family. Other causes of varicose veins are pregnancy, menopause and aging. If patients have had trauma to the leg or surgeries in the legs this can cause varicose veins as well. Some people who stand for long periods of time because of their job will develop varicose veins. Having a history of clots in the legs can also cause varicose veins. Being overweight is also a common cause of varicose veins. What are some of the signs and symptoms of varicose veins? Patients with varicose veins can have a number of different complaints that can be treated. It’s important for you to talk to your doctor about any

discomfort that you may have in your legs, even if you do not think that your symptoms are coming from your veins. The majority of symptoms will occur at night. You may experience heavy or aching legs, ankle or leg swelling, cramping or restless leg syndrome. You may notice your skin color around the lower portion of your legs, particularly around the ankles, has turned brown or scaly. What can varicose veins lead to? For the most part varicose veins are fairly benign. I often tell patients varicose veins are often a nuisance more than anything else. If left untreated they can lead to what is called venous insufficiency. The varicose veins are located on the outside portion of the legs or are in the “superficial” system. Eventually all the pressure in these veins empty into what is called the “deep venous system”. hen

Health & Medicine this happens you develop what is nown as venous insufficiency. The most common consequence of varicose veins and venous insufficiency is pain or cramping and achiness. There can be long term effects such as chronic skin irritation, skin ulcers and wounds that do not heal superficial blood clots, or bleeding from minor trauma. In a small population of people skin ulcers from venous disease can lead to skin cancer.

The ulcers I talked about, affect half a million people in the country. Those in particular who are at risk are those who have a family history, are overweight, have had children, have had clots in their legs, whose jobs require them to stand for long periods of time or have had surgery or trauma to their legs.

What are the treatment options for venous insufficiency and Who is at risk for varicose veins and venous varicose veins? There are many different insufficiency? Everyone is at ris for developing treatment options for patients with varicose veins. treatment options include sclerotherapy, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, stab phlebotomy, endovenous thermal ablation as well as some of the more complex therapies like stenting of the deep vein system. These noninvasive techniques can improve

both appearance and reduce pain. Treatment options are different for different patients based on symptoms and how aggressive you want to be in your therapy. It is important to talk to your healthcare provider about your symptoms.

All-on-4 Dental Implants®

By Dr. Bradford Klassman

V

ery few people are aware of how much they use their teeth on a daily basis. It is not until an individual begins to lose teeth and their oral health and quality of life declines that they begin to understand the impact of impaired oral function on their daily life. Patients with missing and or failing teeth suffer from malnutrition, reduced self esteem, and self confidence. hey possess a high risk for developing oral conditions such as boney atrophy. Patients also suffer from periodontal disease, cavities, root canal infections, and serious bite problems called “bite collapse.” In addition to serious dental conditions, patients with severely failing dentitions can also be more at risk for serious medical conditions such as: cardiovascular problems, stroke and diabetes, complications if pregnant, with a high risk of preterm and low birth weight babies. There are several solutions for individuals with failing dentition. The typical sequence of therapy to address these complex dental conditions could require at least three surgeries. First, the teeth are extracted and the bone is allowed to heal. Patients will temporarily function in a traditional upper or lower denture, which at times impacts the patient’s diet choices. Next, the implants are placed and require a healing time of three to four months. A third surgery is done to expose the implants. The start to finish time is six to eight months. During this time, patients use removable dentures to function. www.TheWomensJournal.com

Delaware Periodontics offers an alternative solution by employing the latest technologies to provide patients with the most predictable and comfortable surgical care. The ll on Implant Protocol allows r. Klassman to remove all infections and replace a failing set of teeth with a fixed set of new teeth in ust one surgical session. He is the only surgical specialist in the area that will complete the surgery and the temporary teeth in the same day.

he ll on Protocol uses only four dental implants to replace an entire arch of teeth. By angling the back implants, we can avoid nerves and sinus grafting which often requires much more aggressive surgical treatment. Not only does this technique replace an entire arch of teeth, but it allows Dr. Klassman to correct bite problems that were not correctable with other treatment options.

About Dr. Klassman Dr. Bradford Klassman improves the lives of his patients by using the highest level of technology to provide the most exceptional and predictable surgical care. He partners with top practices as co-therapists to strengthen and support comprehensive and esthetic oral health. Educated at Temple University School of Dentistry and Post Doctoral training in Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, r rad i al o oard ertified dditionall e i t e fir t periodontist in Delaware to use Laser Periodontal Therapy and the rotocol and e i certified in the Pinhole® Surgical Technique.

Patient’s lives are improved instantly by giving them immediate fixed teeth which improves eating, nutrition, psychological confidence, and removes all sources of infection. This occurs by connecting the new set of teeth to the implants, protecting the surgical site. Any post surgery discomfort is dramatically reduced. Patients can resume eating and activities right away.

Dr. Brad is proud to provide patients with Virtually Instant Dental Implants with a Same Day Smile. He teaches at the Christiana Care Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is a member of the American Dental Association, Delaware State Dental Society, American Academy of Periodontology, and the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry.

Cardiac patients have the potential to be particularly vulnerable to these factors, both from the baseline condition and also from the medications used to treat it. For instance, a great number of patients with a variety of cardiovascular conditions will be more prone to dehydration and heat exhaustion in the hot weather and will require heightened awareness of the need to keep adequate water and uid inta e. This is particularly true in hypertensive, diabetics and heart failure patients especially those using diuretics. Other commonly used medications such as beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ace inhibitors or ARB’s in addition to diuretics can affect how the body

responds to heat exposure. One important simple issue is not to rely purely on thirst as the trigger to drink water. Thirst has been compared to the yellow warning light on your car panel that tells you that your tank is almost empty. It is very important to make sure regular hydration is maintained on a routine basis, always but it becomes a critical need in the hot summer days. Keep in mind that caffeinated beverages and alcohol will tend to dehydrate you even more. Our favorite summer beverage (beer) is not the answer to proper hydration. Nothing beats good old water! Add lemon, lime, fruits for avor if you wish as well.

Other common-sense measures to enjoy the summer in a healthy way include: Dress for the heat: Light colored clothes and appropriate fabrics such as cotton or sweat repellant material, comfortable open shoes, hats, sunglasses,

sunscreen with SPF of 15 or greater and apply every 2 hours, take breaks from exercise and sun exposure, keep taking your medications and consult with your doctor about the need for adjustments. Keeping cool in the heat of summer will make it for a healthier season.

It is also important to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion: • Headaches • Cool, moist skin • Dizziness and lightheadedness • Weakness • Nausea and vomiting • Dark urine These symptoms require

With time, age and gravity, our facial structures tend to lose some of the youthful volume it once had. The cherubic apples in our cheeks fall, leaving us with a drooping jaw line that becomes jowls, and deep lines form around the nose and mouth areas, known as the nasolabial folds. Fortunately there is a solution for these pesky issues of aging. Physicians can now treat their patients with an in-office procedure nown as dermal filler in ections. What are Dermal Fillers? ermal fillers are medical products that are injected by a trained physician to fill in facial areas where volume has been lost, so that it is possible to lift those cheeks bac up and fill in the deep lines around the nose or nasolabial folds, and the depressions around the lower mouth and chin areas known as the marionette lines. Treatments with dermal fillers are a wonderful way to restore a more youthful appearance. However, what has not been so wonderful is how long they lasted, which has been temporary, on average from 6 to 18 months, as the products are slowly reabsorbed and eliminated by the body. This has been a disappointing aspect of dermal fillers. ut this is where the story in non-surgical facial

What is Ultherapy? is a face and neck treatment that improves skin laxity in a meaningful way but completelynon–surgically.

Jowls

Michelle Parsons, MD

is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. Here at ReNove Medical, Dr. Parsons offers Ultherapy, a state of the art medical procedure utilizing focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten sagging skin. No scalpel or anesthesia is needed. Ultherapy is great for people who would like tightening and lifting of facial skin without have a surigcal facelift. The Ulthera sound energy passes right through the skin and targets the areas you want lifted. During a typical 30-60 minute Ultherapy treatment session, an ultrasound applicator is passed over each region of the face. The sound waves emitted deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue. The beauty of Ultherapy ‘uplifting ultrasound’ is that it

Ultherapy works great for sagging jowls, where the skin is fatty, heavy and drooping. Ultherapy is able to reduce this fatty heaviness, tapering the jaw line, for a more youthful look. Ultherapy can restore a more youthful shape to the face from a square to the inverted triangle.

Nasolabial Folds

Ultherapy also works well to minimize the drooping of excess skin that we get along each side of the nose, or lower cheeks. ou may thin that you need to fill in these areas with a filler but the real problem may be that fat and loose skin is just falling down due to the effects of gravity. With ultherapy we can target this area and minimize the fattiness and tighten up that skin. Again this will restore the more youthful balance of the face with the center of gravity higher in the cheek areas.

Neck

Ultherapy can tighten up that loose skin underneath our necks as well. The area that Ultherapy works the best is that area just underneath the chin and extending into that curve of the neck. Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a surgical neck lift. But if you have somewhat loose and fatty skin in your upper neck, hanging just beneath your chin, Ultherapy can improve this area and improve your profile.

Eyelids and Brow Lift

Perhaps one the most dramatic areas that Ultherapy can improve on without surgery is the eye area and creating a brow lift, helping to lift heavy drooping eyelids. Ultherapy can make the eyes appear more open,

more awake, rested and more youthful. This may be subtle change but this small difference can have a significant effect! Our clients really love this part of the Ultherapy results.

Before

Overall Ultherapy works wonders to taper, redefine your facial contours, while eliminating fatty, droopy areas, and lift and tightening skin around the eyes and underneath the chin, for a more youthful sculpted look. The stars in Hollywood do this treatment, and now you have access to this age defying procedure right here in Delaware at the beach. Dr. Parsons is pleased to bring this cutting edge highly sought after technology to you to help you look your best. If you think you may be candidate for Ultherapy, please give us a call to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Michelle Parsons. 302227-1079.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Ultherapy?

After just one treatment with no downtime, your skin will gradually shift back into a more youthful position. Improvements include a slee er more defined jawline and tighter skin on the neck under the chin. Sagging skin on the cheeks can be tightened and lifted, which in turn can

After

improve folds from the nose to mouth, folds from the mouth to jaw, and drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look in general. The results of Ultherapy are permanent, just as the results of a face-lift are permanent, 0f course, your skin will continue its natural aging process. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery but looking for meaningful results.

TESTIMONIAL One week after my Ultherapy Treatment, my husband, after being out of town for a couple of days asked me “what’s different about you,” he was staring at my face! Not having told him about my treatment I innocently said “what do you mean?” His response was “I am not sure but your face looks different.” I asked “different good or different bad?” He replied “different good, looks stretched.” I was surprised that the results were noticed that quickly. I found the treatment to be bearable, certainly wasn’t pain free, but tolerable. I was very happy when it was over! For the past 2 weeks following the treatment my face has been tender which is a reminder that the treatment is continuing to work! I would highly recommend it to all! K.M. – Ocean City, MD.

How Oral Health And Heart Disease Are Connected Presented by Richard J. McCann, D.M.D., P.A. It’s increasingly common to hear that oral health is vital for overall health. More than 80 percent of Americans, for example, are living with periodontal or gum disease, which often goes undiagnosed. This may be because the patient’s teeth feel fine so he a oids going to the dentist and isits to the physician rarely focus on oral health.

T

There is now evidence of two specific lin s between oral health and heart disease. irst recent studies show that if you have gum disease in a moderate or advanced stage you’re at greater ris for heart disease than someone with healthy gums. And second your oral health can provide doctors with warning signs for a range of diseases and conditions, including those in the heart. Why Are These Things Related? ral health and heart disease are connected by the spread of bacteria and other germs from your mouth to other parts of your body through the blood stream. hen these bacteria reach the heart they can attach themselves to any damaged area and cause in ammation. This can result in illnesses such as endocarditis an infection of the inner lining of the heart according to ayo linic. ther cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis clogged arteries and stro e have also been lin ed to in ammation caused by oral bacteria according to the American eart Association. Who Is at Risk? atients with chronic gum conditions such as gingivitis or advanced periodontal disease have the highest ris for heart disease caused by poor oral health particularly if it remains undiagnosed and unmanaged. The bacteria that are associated with gum infection are in the mouth and can enter the blood stream where they attach to the blood vessels and increase your ris to cardiovascular disease. Even if you don’t have noticeable gum in ammation however inade uate oral hygiene and accumulated pla ue puts you at ris for gum disease. The bacteria can also migrate into your bloodstream causing elevated -reactive protein which is a mar er for in ammation in the blood vessels. This can increase your ris of heart disease and stro e according to the leveland linic.

The County Woman’s Journal

Symptoms and Warning Signs ou may have gum disease even if it’s in its early stages if: your gums are red swollen and sore to the touch. your gums bleed when you eat brush or oss. you see pus or other signs of infection around the gums and teeth. your gums loo as if they are “pulling away” from the teeth. you fre uently have bad breath or notice a bad taste in your mouth. or some of your teeth are loose or feel as if they are moving away from the other teeth.

Prevention Measures ood oral hygiene and regular dental e aminations are the best way to protect yourself against the development of gum disease. The American ental Association A A outh ealthy site recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush that fits your mouth comfortably so it reaches every tooth surface ade uately. ou should also oss daily and visit your dentist for regular professional cleanings. y being proactive about your oral health you can protect yourself from developing a connection between oral health and heart disease and eep your smile healthy clean and beautiful throughout your life.

Balancing the effects of aging Getting old is for the birds. At least that’s how the “old” saying goes. But in today’s world, aging doesn’t have to be a scary or overwhelming process. No one can stop the clock on aging — but everyone can be prepared for some of the challenges that may lie ahead. “Having a plan in place makes all the different when it comes to getting older,” said Dan Wagner, an educator at Bayhealth who specializes in teaching classes on aging and balance. “A lot of people are afraid of getting older. We want to help take away that fear by showing people what changes will likely occur, and how to stay on top of them.”

A big part of that is falls prevention. Many seniors think falls are a normal part of the aging process, and this is simply not true. “Falls prevention is a must for older patients,” said Preeti Gupta, MD, with Bayhealth Primary Care, Milford. “The risk of falls increases as we age, as does the likelihood we’ll be seriously hurt by a fall. We need to do all we can to stop falls before they happen.” Many changes take place in the body and our environment over time, so it’s important to be aware, and talk to your doctor about any concerns.

MUSCLE CHANGES As we get older, our muscles are slowly getting weaker. “It happens over time and it’s hard to avoid,” said Wagner. “Staying active and getting out helps keep your skills sharp. The more homebound you are, the more at risk you are of losing your flexibility and strength.” It’s also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “I still want my older patients to exercise as often as possible, especially strength training,” said Dr. Gupta. “Every little bit will make a big difference.”

VISION AND HEARING The normal aging process causes gradual losses of the sensory system, which includes vision and hearing. “These changes begin around age 50. At this time vision can start to be an issue, as well as hearing. Both vision and hearing play a crucial role in balance,” said Dr. Gupta. “It’s important that older patients continue to go to the eye doctor for regular visits and have their hearing checked at their primary care office.”

“AGING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE OVERWHELMING; THERE ARE WAYS TO STAY ON TOP OF THE CHANGES AS THEY COME.” — Preeti Gupta, MD

MEDICATIONS Many seniors may not realize that the medications they take can affect their balance. Taking certain medications in combination can also be problematic. “Our best advice to older patients is to use only one pharmacy,” said Wagner. “Some patients will use the pharmacy closest to each of their doctors. In that instance, the pharmacists aren’t able to see all of the medications a patient is taking, and won’t be able to identify harmful medication interactions.”

HOUSEHOLD DANGERS While many people don’t want to make any changes to their home, simple precautions can have a big impact. “It’s very easy for our older patients to make simple changes to their home to increase safety,” said Dr. Gupta. “Removing loose rugs, reducing the crowding of furniture, getting rid of any clutter on staircases and in hallways, having proper lighting in the house, and using non-slippery footwear go a long way toward reducing the risk of falls.”

STAY EDUCATED In the end, it’s important older adults realize aging isn’t what causes falls, it’s the underlying issues. Falls don’t have to be a normal part of everyday life. One easy way to learn more about falls prevention and simple changes is to take the “A Matter of Balance” courses offered at Bayhealth.

Preventing falls is critical when it comes to ensuring our aging population can continue to live at home in a safe environment. “We want older adults to get out, be social, and stay active,” said Dr. Gupta. “Aging doesn’t have to be overwhelming; there are ways to stay on top of the changes as they come.”

FIND YOUR BALANCE AT A FREE BAYHEALTH CLASS Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. These free classes are held once a week for eight weeks. The classes are two hours each. The program is offered at various locations statewide — including at Bayhealth in Smyrna, Dover, and Milford. Pre-registration is required. Visit Bayhealth.org/Classes or call 302-744-7135 to learn more about the A Matter of Balance classes and our STEPS to Healthy Aging program. If you are in need of a physician, call 1-866-BAY-DOCS (229-3627) to find a provider that fits your needs.

“I love teaching these classes,” said Wagner. “They are a great way for older folks to come learn more about the changes that take place as people get older and what simple steps they can take to stay active.”

Improve Your Digestive System and Enhance Your Quality of Life The National Institutes of Health estimates that 60-70 million Americans are affected by digestive diseases. While many of these diseases may not be life threatening, most impact quality of life. A few simple changes in your lifestyle can help you improve your digestive health, and as a result your overall well-being. Recommendations for a healthy digestive system mirror those for preventing or controlling many other diseases. Five habits make a huge difference: 1) eat a healthy diet, low in fat, high in fiber and avoid processed foods 2) drink plenty of water and limit alcohol inta e reduce stress maintain a healthy weight and 5) exercise. The World Gastroenterology Organization expands on these basic principles in their recommendations, adding that individuals should 1) eat small, fre uent meals - throughout the day to improve metabolism reduce hunger and increase energy eat fish - wee as there are multiple health benefits from eating fish eat lean meat including por chic en or tur ey and eat slowly chewing food fully to prevent overeating. Beyond these basic recommendations, research completed over the past several years has continued to uncover

important links between what we eat and our digestive health. What about probiotics? etween and species of bacteria live in the gastrointestinal tract. deally of the bacteria should be “good” bacteria the other 15% are potentially harmful. Processed foods and low fiber diets enable bad bacteria to overwhelm good bacteria negatively impacting the functioning of the digestive system. robiotics stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria. robiotics can be added to your diet either through foods, like yogurt with active cultures or by ta ing a probiotic supplement. What is a low FODMAP diet? A low FODMAP diet restricts slowly absorbed and indigestible carbohydrates. A s are naturally found in many foods. Restricting FODMAPs may help to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal disorders. The A diet is available on many easily accessed web sites. What e actly is fiber, and why is it so important? ietary fiber consists of plants or other foods that are resistant to digestion and absorption by the intestine. iber can help to enrich beneficial bacteria. iber helps the body eliminate waste efficiently. Decreasing the time waste is in the body provides protective effects from diverticular disease

and several types of cancers, including colorectal cancer. ufficient fiber inta e also lowers cholesterol and controls blood sugar. iber helps us to feel full so can have a positive impact on obesity lowering the incidence of fatty liver and the ramifications of fatty liver, including a form of liver disease associated with fatty liver called steatohepatitis. Adults should eat - g of fiber daily.

f you need to increase your fiber intake, do it gradually to minimize gas and bloating. Our physicians strongly believe in the importance of helping our patients live healthy lives. We will support your efforts to follow these recommendations to prevent disease, or lessen or eliminate symptoms you currently have from an existing condition.

“I lived on antacids for years and then learned it as the orst thin I co ld have done for my condition.” – arol .

HEARTBURN You don’t have to live with it Now you can enjoy permanent relief from the pain of acid reflux, gas, or bloating. The first step is discovering why you have it. 1) Do I have GERD? Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is chronic acid reflux, the result of stomach acids flowing back up into your esophagus. A medical exam is required to determine if your heartburn is the result of GERD. 2) What are the symptoms of GERD? - Chronic heartburn - Heartburn that disturbs your sleep - A sour taste in your mouth - A burning sensation in your esophagus - Excessive belching - Hoarseness, voice changes or dry cough - Chest Pain 3) How do you diagnose the cause of my heartburn? Our board certified gastroenterologists offer the most advanced tests to assess gastrointestinal conditions and determine the cause of your heartburn. 4) If I self-medicate with antacids, will my acid reflux go away? If left undiagnosed, GERD can lead to the precancerous condition known as Barrett’s Esophagus – or worse, to esophageal cancer. We also look for esophageal ulcers and the narrowing of the esophagus (stricture). 5) How can I learn more? HGA offers a complete overview of digestive health disorders and the tests and treatments for all disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Visit HunterdonGastro.com to learn more.

CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Fat Removal pockets of excess fat. This non-invasive procedure represents an alternative to surgical liposuction by using a novel cooling technology that permanently removes fat cells from treated areas.

How does CoolSculpting Work?

Michelle Parsons, MD

is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State niversity of ew or in eneral Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. The biggest trend in cosmetic surgery is the expansion of non-invasive body countouring technology, the best of which is CoolSculpting, which is now available at ReNove Medical in Rehoboth Beach. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat. Arms and legs can be treated as well. Unlike some other non-surgical technologies that release fat from fat cells, such as Vasershape and I-Lipo, Coolsculpting destroys the fat cells thereby eliminating treated fat permanently, as our body does not make new fat cells. Coolsculpting is a unique non-surgical treatment for removal of fat from localized

The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas.

What are the most common areas to be treated?

Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. These are the areas that ool culpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can

be treated and eliminated by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the muffin top waist brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.

Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting?

Before

The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. It is common to have numbness or decreased sensitivity in the treated area lasting 1 to 2 weeks. In some instances patients will develop a burning tingling sensation 5 days after the treatment which can be controlled with a Lidoderm patch. There are virtually no long term negative side effects.

What does CoolSculpting feel like?

Our treatment room is very comfortable where you will relax on a padded recliner. When the CoolSculpting is applied to the fatty area to be treated there is a sensation of pulling that feels slightly uncomfortable for the first to minutes. radually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. There seems to be a natural endorphin release during the treatment so patients are very relaxed during the treatment, which takes an hour. Some people have fallen asleep during the treatment! A typical treatment session lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how many areas are treated. During the treatment, we have

After et i available so you can watch a movie or catch up on your favorite television program. usy moms find this time to themselves a real treat! We also have Wi-Fi.

How quickly do people see results?

After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells are actually killed and will be eliminated by the body over time. Many report seeing changes in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. The full benefit will ta e as long as to days.

How long to results last?

Once the fat cells are frozen, killed and naturally eliminated by your body, the results are permanent. You can still gain weight in other areas if you over eat and don’t continue to try to remain fit. If you are interested in learning more about CoolSculpting and would like to see if you are a good candidate for this effective treatment to lose unwanted fatty areas, please call us today to set up an appointment to meet with Dr. Michelle Parsons at ReNove Medical, Health Rejuvenating Spa, in ehoboth each - . e will be offering an introductory Special this season, so please inquire.

How Medicare Beneficiaries Can Save On Prescription Medications There are some 10,000 Americans turning 65 each day, with many joining the growing pool of Medicare enrollees trying to control their health care costs. And among the worries is how best to afford and manage what for some can be a not-so-simple prescription drug regimen. When you consider that a recent survey showed more than one-third of Medicare beneficiaries surveyed are concerned about prescription drug costs and one in five say they’ve made sacrifices such as delaying filling a prescription or s ipping doses to help manage medication costs, the importance of seniors nowing how to manage prescription drug costs can be critical to managing their health.

Not Too Late To Save

eing able to ma e ends meet doesn’t have to con ict with ta ing medications correctly and on schedule. What many seniors with Medicare may not now is that depending on how their insurance plan is designed, something as simple as where their prescriptions are filled can have a significant impact on how much they pay. In fact, some are able to identify savings of hundreds of dollars in co-pays by filling their prescriptions at a pharmacy that’s within their plan’s preferred pharmacy networ . In addition, some seniors may thin that with the edicare open enrollment period over, the opportunity to save on prescription drug costs is over, too but that’s not the case. edicare beneficiaries can switch pharmacies at any time to access lower-cost medications; they just have to now where to start.

The County Woman’s Journal

Ask A Pharmacist

The uic est and easiest way to explore cost savings is for seniors to as their local pharmacist to provide prescription drug cost estimates based on their selected plan. Walgreens, for e ample is in the networ of hundreds of Medicare prescription drug plans and participates in the preferred networ s of several of the largest national Part D sponsors. These networ s are specifically designed to offer ways to save on medications, and pharmacists can review potential cost-saving options for customers, which could include identifying a lower-cost generic medication option instead of brand name medications. Walgreens pharmacists can also offer advice on medications and help identify any potential harmful drug interactions. Community pharmacists also provide a wide range of important, preventive health care services, including immunizations, health testing, and helping patients manage their prescription drug regimen and are wor ing more closely with physicians and other providers than ever before.

A Convenient (And CostEffective) Option

All this can be done under one roof at your local pharmacy; all seniors need to do is stop by. Online resources such asWalgreens.com/Medicare <http://www.walgreens.com/> offer additional information on specific cost savings that may be available to Medicare beneficiaries concerned about prescription drug costs.

The Delaware Hospice Center

Over 96% of Delaware Hospice patients receive care at home, but there are circumstances that require 24-hour, short term care. Patients of Delaware Hospice are welcomed to stay at the Delaware Hospice Center. As an alternative to hospital care the Delaware Hospice Center provides symptom management. Since its opening in 2008, the Delaware Hospice Center has served 6,300 patients. The state-of-the-art facility includes 16 private patient and family suites, family style kitchens, children’s play areas, living rooms, a Family Support Counseling Center, and a meditation room. With round-the-clock care, caregivers are given peace of

mind knowing that their loved one’s needs are immediately addressed. Caregivers don’t have to be nurses at the Delaware Hospice Center… they can just be a spouse, child, or loved one. But it’s not just about comforting the patient. At the Delaware Hospice Center, the needs of a patient’s family and loved ones are also addressed. The Center has unlimited visiting hours, social workers, and chaplains on staff to meet with families to discuss the various medical or personal aspects that may arise. Once a patient’s symptoms are properly controlled, they are often transitioned back into their home. When this occurs, the patient and their

family often use the Center as a place to learn about managing medications, pain and disease specific information. There are many different reasons patients come to the Delaware Hospice Center, but one of the most prevalent reasons is for peace of mind. While all individuals with a life-limiting illness are eligible for hospice care, the Delaware Hospice Center is specifically designed for patients who temporarily require a higher level of specialized care. To better understand this option of care, and our other services, Delaware Transitions and Delaware Palliative, just give us a call. Call 1-800-838-9800 today!

10th Anniversary of the Delaware Hospice Center

Some of our families have said the following: “Even though there is “no place like home” if that is not possible Delaware Hospice is the best. Have been there with a few friends and just recently with my Mother. Beautiful facility and staff is absolutely wonderful. So accommodating, empathetic, loving not only to patient but family. A very welcoming, peaceful and comforting atmosphere. God bless each one of them for their caring and loving hearts!” K.P. “It was such a beautiful place for my father. The staff was just so wonderful to him and my family.” - D.B “They were at my side every step of the confusing way... I am so grateful for their expertise care concern and love. I’m not sure I could have done it without them! Eternally grateful!” - M.R.

As an alternative to hospital care, the Delaware Hospice Center provides specialized, expert care in a comfortable, spacious and home-like setting. Should more advanced short-term care be needed, the Delaware Hospice Center is conveniently located in Milford.

This is a great place. My husband was there in March. They had a place for me to sleep and I was able to stay 24/7. The staff was great and the aides were wonderful- they really cared about my husband.

“Just this past week, I spent several days with a dear friend at the Delaware Hospice Center. From the physician to the housekeeping staff, the degree of professionalism and compassion was wonderful. Such a calling.” - C.W. “I have never seen anything so beautiful and people so caring in my life. This is a wonderful place!” – K.L.

ommy ommy listen fi e year old tella s ueals as she claps her hands together isten or the sound ears spring to manda s eyes as she hears her daughter clap or the ery first time When Stella was born 10 weeks early, Amanda saw in her daughter a determination that carried her through many complications and eight weeks in the NICU. Between three and six months, Amanda and Jim, Stella’s parents, noticed Stella was not using her left arm and leg. They were shocked to learn she had had a stroke after birth. Wanting the best outcome for their daughter, they sought out Easterseals Children’s Therapy services. “ was devastated at first and it was very scary in the beginning. e had no idea what was in store for her,” Amanda says. “We got lucky with great people at Easterseals. Not only did they help us by giving us home exercises and ideas for making adjustments in the home, but they were, and still are, emotionally supportive.” A trusted provider of children’s therapy services for more than 65 years, Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore specializes in treating children ages birth through eighteen years with a variety of challenges. Easterseals specializes in meeting the needs of children and their families through creative, playful activities that go beyond traditional services. Occupational therapy has helped Stella rely more on her left hand, or as the family puts it “leftie.” Speech therapy has helped her to tell her family what she wants, which has reduced her frustration and outbursts at mealtime and playtime. “ am profoundly proud of tella and her ourney thus far. rom seeing her for the first time in to current times she has been a fighter ” im says. “ tella has not let anything stand in her way. From the start, Stella has had a healthy stubborn way about her that lets her be resilient and persevere to the next challenge.” Learning how to clap was a big accomplishment for Stella. Her next goal is to ride a bike so she can ride with her family this summer. As she has learned to crawl, walk, jump and skip with Easterseals physical therapy, Stella has had a group of cheerleaders on her side, including her older sister, Alexandria or “Lexi.” “I think my sister is brave because she has a lot of doctor appointments and doesn’t fuss,”

Lexi says. “I help my parents by distracting her when she’s nervous about going to new appointments. I also try to teach people about her disability and what makes her unique. By being a sister to someone like Stella I have learned to appreciate what we have and be patient when it takes her longer to do things.” More than 1,000 children per year receive physical, speech and occupational therapy at the Easterseals Children’s Therapy Center in Georgetown and Salisbury. Easterseals plays a critical role in providing needed therapy for children with a variety of disabilities, short or long term. hildren with and without disabilities will find the highest uality services designed to meet their individual needs. Easterseals Keeping Memories Alive

By Natalie Scott Finding a place to care for your loved one is stressful, especially when you do not know where to turn. The need for adult day care is greater than ever as the older population continues to grow at a rapid pace. Easterseals Georgetown Center Director, Greg rtis e plains how asterseals emory are program which provides center-based day care for adults, is addressing the need o indi iduals and amilies li ing with l heimer s disease or some other orm o dementia “The Memory Care Program is important because it is designed for individual with a memory related disease or dementia,” Artis said. “The program provides a safe environment due to our secure location. articipant are able to engage in activities that have been identified as interests while socializing with new friends. Caregivers have the opportunity to take a break and care for themselves. They can run errands and attend appointments while their love-ones are being taking care of by professional staff members.”

“Alzheimer/dementia is a disease that affects millions of people as well as their families. It takes a special person and supportive family to put their lives on hold to care for a person with dementia,” Artis said. “Easterseals is here to assist in caring for loved ones, which will allow caregivers to take time for themselves during the day to refresh their mind and body while their loved one is in our facilities.” Like all Easterseals services, the Memory Care program is comprehensive and individualized to meet each client’s needs, family-focused to meet each family member’s concerns and have the goal of enhanced independence. The adult day care program offers a break for family caregivers responsible for a relative who is unable to function independently, but does not require 24-hour nursing care. For more information about Easterseals Memory Care program, contact Greg Artis at (302) 253-1111 or email Greg at gartis@esdel.org. Easterseals Tunnell Center is located at 22317 DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947. Please visit our website and see all of our services for people of all ages and abilities: www.de.easterseals.com.

The Memory Care Program, partially funded by the Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities, includes modifications such as secured doors and special program areas designed to better serve families. While their loved one is being cared for by a staff consisting of a full-time nurse, activity coordinators and persons who provide meals, caregivers can experience a day of relief to catch up on sleep, shopping or other activities.

Too Hot (Outside!) to HANDLE? Our Eastern shore is renowned for beautiful sunsets, historic locales and serene water views. Yet that tranquility can be quickly shattered when scorching summer heat waves sweep in. While warmer weather is often welcomed by our older adults, especially those with joint pain, extra precautions must be taken to protect this at-risk population from extreme heat.

Addressing the Temperature

At Harrison Senior Living, we maintain safe, moderate temperatures for our residents and short-term rehabilitation guests all year long. If someone wants to stroll outdoors on really hot days, we suggest they employ common sense and do so in the early morning before the high heat, or in late afternoon when the hottest part of the day is past. Shopping trips to indoor malls, ice cream sundae afternoons or movies with popcorn are ways to beat extreme outdoor heat. We also offer activities like art projects, games and puzzles. And there’s always a good read to keep your body cool but work out your brain.

A Vulnerable Population

According to the Centers for Disease Control, older adults with chronic medical conditions may be more prone to feeling the effects of the heat. Also, some medications can affect the way the body responds to heat. As we age, our bodies simply don’t regulate temperature as well. Our bodies normally pump more heat-carrying blood to the skin in hot weather, as much as two gallons of blood each minute, which puts an added strain on the heart. Geriatric specialists further warn that older adults suffering from dementia or diabetes, or those on tranquilizers, may not even be aware they are thirsty. Other factors that can cause heat-related illness include dehydration, salt-restricted diets, being overweight, and simple overdressing. For those who try to budget by reducing air conditioning usage, we’d suggest they try to keep costs down in other ways. Turning on the air conditioning is not much different than filling a prescription – both steps help keep you healthy.

Summer Heat Tips

No matter where older adults live, they should take extreme hot weather as seriously as extreme cold weather. In general: • Follow the three “L”s of clothing – Lightweight, Light-colored and Loose-fitting. Wide-brimmed hats look great. Natural fabrics like cotton can “breathe.” • Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. If your fluids are limited by your doctor, check with him/her to see what amounts you should be drinking in hotter weather. • Close drapes or shades to keep sunshine out and air conditioning in. • Check regularly on your friends and have them do the same for you. • Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages which can dehydrate. • A tepid bath or shower, or even a cool washcloth, can help keep you comfortable.

Heat exhaustion needs to be taken seriously. Symptoms include weakness, lack of appetite, faster pulse, nausea or vomiting, pale, clammy skin, muscle cramps, and possible fainting. When not properly addressed, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which can be fatal. If you or a senior loved one are really “feeling the heat” and experiencing symptoms like these, or even headaches, breathing issues, dizziness or light-headedness, lack of coordination, extreme fatigue, or ankle swelling, we urge you to seek medical help. Sunny days should be pleasant, not too hot to handle! If you have questions, contact Kori Bingaman at 302-856-4574. Harrison Senior Living also owns and operates Harrison House of Chester County and Harrison House of Christiana (PA).

What is Acupuncture? Dr. Tracy Hudson

Dr. Sheila Burek

Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

Acupuncture is a complementary medical practice that entails stimulating certain points on the body, most often with a needle penetrating the skin, to alleviate pain or to help treat various health conditions. Developed millennia ago in China, numerous recent studies conducted by scientists in Europe and the United States have found that acupuncture is at least moderately effective in treating pain and nausea. For example, one of the largest studies to date on acupuncture and chronic pain — a meta-analysis of 29 well-conducted studies involving nearly 18,000 patients and published in October 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine — found that acupuncture is effective for treating chronic pain and therefore is a reasonable referral option. How Acupuncture Is Said To Work Acupuncture dates back to at least 100 B.C., which is when an organized system of diagnosis and treatment using needles was first described in writing in hina. owever the practice likely precedes this written

Dr. Sheila Burek is a Buffalo, NY native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.

history, according to Dr. Edzard Ernst, a research physician specializing in the study of complementary and alternative medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is linked to the belief that disease is caused by disruptions to the ow of energy or i in the body. Acupuncture stimulates points on or under the skin called acupuncture points or acupressure points releasing this i. The i then travels through channels called meridians, according to the Center for Spirituality & ealing at the niversity of innesota. Another hypothesis is that acupuncture works by reducing pro-in ammatory mar ers or proteins, in the body. Some animal and human studies suggest that by doing acupuncture, you can significantly decrease these proin ammatory mar ers including T and which decreases in ammation and reduces pain. et another hypothesis applies specifically to how acupuncture can be used to treat nerve damage, such as chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy, a condition that often causes numbness or weakness in the feet and hands. The idea is that by putting the needle in, you stimulate the brain to secrete some nerve growth factor, and then that helps the nerve to regenerate.

Limitations And Misconceptions Increasingly, mainstream doctors and medical institutions are accepting the practice of acupuncture, particularly for treatment of pain and nausea. A 2013 review, for example, found that acupuncture could reduce vomiting and nausea among patients receiving chemotherapy, according to Cancer esearch . esearch is ongoing into whether acupuncture can also help with other cancer treatment-related symptoms, including hot ashes peripheral neuropathy and lymphedema (swelling of the arm or hand). The orld ealth rganization maintains an extensive list of diseases and conditions (mostly pain related) possibly treatable by acupuncture, including: back pain, neck pain, headaches, tendinitis, and degenerative joint disease. on-pain conditions such as stress anxiety, and sleep disturbances also respond well to acupuncture treatment.

TESTIMONIAL I’ve been experiencing many arthritis issues and just general malaise secondary to my hypothyroidism, seen endochronoligists took many different supplements, and then was advised to see dr Tracy Hudson , she listens, ask questions offers advice and gives great body manipulation , she’s the best chiropractor I’ve found! Reiki is a Japanese hands-on relaxation technique that aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating deep relaxation. Because of this, Reiki promotes healing and health. Reiki restores energy balance and vitality by relieving the physical and emotional effects of unreleased stress. Unlike massage Reiki is non-manipulative, therefore, safe for everyone. Reiki is performed by the practitioner placing their hands on or hovering over the fully dressed client in strategic locations on the body. Reiki is spiritual but is not tied to religion.

Henry Childers, IV, MD, FAAO Henry Childers, IV, MD, FAAO was a professional sailor and member of the America’s Cup winning team, before completing his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes cardio-thoracic surgery and is a former cardio-thoracic surgery department chairman. Sports injuries and a chronic degenerative shoulder condition led to my life-changing medical decision. After years of chronic pain I had to make a decision, “Do I have my shoulder and knee replaced as multiple doctors had recommended? Is there a better way.” I began investigating non-surgical treatments. Fortunately, I choose the non-surgical approach. This not only led to my physical recovery but also to an academic interest in “cellular medicine” an integrative approach to treatment. This discipline employs innovative and novel techniques including re uency pecific icrocurrent and rthoMitochondrial Medicine using ozone, prolozone, platelet rich plasma and stem cells to heal and regenerate tissues, reduce in ammation and deto ifying cells. After e periencing the amazing result on my shoulder and knees I realized that non-surgical treatments for most skeletal-muscular conditions have come of age. They are used throughout the world, especially in Europe and play an essential part in the treatment of professional athletes. But despite ample clarification in leading scientific and medical research, these treatments are not yet mainstream in the United States. Cellular medicine works by harnessing the body’s innate ability to grow and heal itself without all the drugs and invasive procedures that have become so prevalent in medicine today. It is effective because it works on the cellular level by stimulating gene e pression enhancing cellular metabolism improving o ygen utilization increases cellular deto ification including up-regulating hundreds of antio idant’s response elements. Treatments such as Ozone Therapy can induce a rearrangement of the biochemical pathways, thereby activating second messengers in a cascade with a multiple system action. Cellular medicine dramatically increases ATP and protein synthesis–all which improve cellular function. Treatment results in a dramatic decrease in pain and in ammation while increasing blood supply and growth factors. These cellular changes, and the resulting repair and regeneration of injured tissue leads to organ and consequently total-body wellness. Our cells and tissues function like they did when we were in our 20s. Cellular medicine does more than treat symptoms, it restores the body’s ability to heal itself.

Welcome to the largest appliance selection in the shore area.

Featuring over 50 brands from all over the world all here nestled into our quaint country location. We have just relocated in the recent months from the busy Highway one location that we started and operated at since 1969. The move was so bitter sweet for the staff and I but sweet from the aspect that we are out in the country just three miles west of Route one in the Coolspring area. The new location features a bright well stocked showroom that is just charming most consumers say when they come in to shop for their new appliances. The showroom features hundreds of pieces of the markets best appliances under a well lit copper colored ceiling and is further complimented by old country plan pine ooring that is marveled at constantly and remar ed upon by many.

Why should you consider shopping at Millman’s Appliances is the question we like to answer above all others. When shopping locally for your appliances we ask for you to consider our appliance store as we support over two dozen local charities each year. Shopping locally means that your money stays local in our community and is spent within the community according to our local ban over si times before it finds its way out of our community. When dollars are spent at box stores the money is picked by amoured truck and goes directly to a location far away from here doing absolutely nothing for our local citizens. We also hire and employ local associates for our business and I am proud to say our associates and their family members are integral part of our business, all 53 of them rely on us each day for employment and their financial well being.

We service what we sell with factory trained service technicians and also offer you our consumer a free ten year major component warranty on every new unit that we sell to you and your family. Our prices are very competitive and often are lower than the National competition with all the value added services and rebates that we have to offer which are exclusive to our business. We also have a used appliance donation program that we proudly started about twelve years ago which helps truly deserving members of community with a free used appliance delivered and installed in their homes. Such members who have received them in the past have been, but not limited to: Deployed military families, Disabled Veterans, Hospice and Cancer patients, Widows on very limited income, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Easter Seals, Burned out families, Single mother homes, Rehabilitation centers, Shelters, and the list goes on and on. We care about our community at Millman’s Appliances! ur showroom never closes at illman’s Appliances with what is classified as a state of the art showroom on line @ www.millmansappliances.com featuring 92,000 different items that updates to market trends every nineteen minutes. This site is so progressive it offers you dimensions owners manuals and even rebates all at your fingertips while you are in the leisure of your home. Come and shop for your families new appliances at Millman’s Appliances, we appreciate your business and we will work hard to meet or exceed your needs everyday.

Open Monday through Friday from 8:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Saturday 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and closed on Sunday.

TESTIMONIAL I not only got a new granite kitchen counter top from Ancient Art Stone, to complete the kitchen I purchased new appliances from Millman’s Appliances in Lewes, Delaware. The major differences from the big department stores like Lowes and Home Depot is SERVICE. Their showroom gave us so many different selections to choose from. The personal touch of their guidance’s and step-by-step knowledge of the products fit into our home perfectly. Each piece is delivered and placed in your home by experts, right down to instructions on how to use and care for each product. We are happy that we selected this quality company.

Total Garage Transformation!

Spring is on its way and it will soon be time to get out and enjoy the beach we all love! But getting organized is on all (well, at least most) of our to do lists. In this article, I’d like to focus on the garage where we store our beach gear and so much more! A Total Garage Transformation will make your summer much more enjoyable.

A few statistics so we know we are not alone in our situation. Surveys have found: 10% of items stored in an average garage belong to friends, family or neighbors who don’t live there. A quarter of us can t fit one car in a two car garage. One third of homeowners don’t know what is stored in their garage. The garage tends to be our “for now” room. When we talk about putting things in there, the sentence often ends with “for now”. Let’s break that cycle! We can help you with anything from a DIY, a Partial Transformation, or a Total Transformation. We’ll come to your home for a complimentary consultation help you get through the steps of Sort, Shed, Store to get to a pleasing and well-organized garage on your budget and schedule.

We can help you realize this kind of transition!

All of the things that prevented us from keeping the garage organized from the start will be working against us. We can help you with the process and the logistics from start-to-finish including designing and installing a custom storage system that fits your lifestyle to a T. A Transformed Garage will help you go relax at the beach with friends and family!

Bill and Janis Nickerson opened Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach in early 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native. This move completes a commitment Bill made 20 years ago to “retire” to Sussex County. The Tailored Living franchise allows Bill to pursue two of his passions of woodworking and entrepreneurship. It has been an exciting second year completing many pantries, garages, home offices, Murphy beds, and closets in and around DelMarVa. Let us design a solution for you!

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2018? Work Smarter? Take up a new hobby? Get your kids ready faster?

WE CAN GET YOU ORGANIZED!

Hard toCover ...

eciding on which treatment to cover a normal window with can be difficult enough but sometimes you run into an opening that re uires a little more effort. liding glass rench doors can be troublesome arches eyebrows over windows along with ovals circles octagons triangles rhombuses and trapezoids are all out there and may be letting in too much sun That long s inny window ne t to your front door that we call a sidelight can also throw a mon ey wrench into the wor s. esides letting in natural light and providing you with a loo to see who is at the door it can also sometimes let passersby have a clear loo right into your home. Through the years we have installed many different types of shades and blinds onto these openings but the best thing we have ever done for this was to start putting shutters on them. lantation shutters are the most versatile answer to these issues because they really are the only covering that has a treatment for everything mentioned. or sliders there are both bypass style and bi-fold style which now have the ability to be folded over to lie against the wall ne t to the slider instead of perpendicular to the wall as in the past. This greatly reduces the pro ection into the room while at the same time letting you completely open up the glass to the light and the view beyond it. t is an improvement over the bypass because while the bypass doesn’t invade into the room when opened it does always have at least one panel’s width covering the glass. or rench doors we can design a shutter that fits right over the glass. e attach the frame to the door and can even design the frame around the door handle for that stunning custom loo . The panel can swing completely open so that you may clean the glass and for those instances when you need ma imum light but most of the time you will ust operate the louvers for light control and privacy. This covering is also very functional for a door as the entire covering is attached so that there is nothing to swing away from the glass as it moves. t’s a good choice for a door that will be used often.

Arches eyebrows and other specialty shapes such as ovals and triangles are another chance for shutters to standout. Almost always in this category a template is re uired. t doesn’t get much more customized than that and it shows. hat you end up with is a gorgeous and uni ue piece that was made ust for that opening. e get the best reactions from our customers on those obs. They often didn’t even thin that it could be done. ften homeowners struggle with whether to let the difficult dictate the basic or to let the basic dictate the difficult and the best way to deal with this is to be armed with the facts. That’s where we come in. e can let you now what is available for your situation and help you figure out which way you want to go about it. Every situation is different and for instance other than shutters there are around a dozen other ways to cover a sliding glass door. t can be overwhelming to many but with a little guidance the answers start to show themselves so that you may consider the whole ob instead of ust part of it and whether you are going to do it all at once or in stages a unified loo even with different types of coverings can be accomplished. e would love the opportunity to wor with you to achieve that. ou can call in to be contacted by one of our consultants who will come to your home with tons of samples from the best brands. They can measure and price right on the spot to complete an order and get started that day or ust leave you a little more educated with more to thin about and decisions to be made. Either way our consults are free of charge. Another way to start is to ust stop by our showroom where you can see and operate today’s popular coverings. e are located on the left ust . miles west of t. on ewes eorgetown wy.

Comfy Bed Is Key To Healthier, Happier Life Researchers at UC Berkley confirmed recently what has been suspected for years – deep sleep is the fountain of youth. “Nearly every disease killing us in later life has a causal link to lack of sleep,” Matthew Walker professor at UC Berkley said of his April 2017 research results. “We’ve done a good job of extending life span, but a poor job of extending our health span. We now see sleep, and improving sleep, as a new pathway for helping remedy that.” Deep sleep improves every function of the body from beauty to physical and intellectual ability, the research found. In order to help facilitate a good night’s sleep, experts recommend creating a comfortable oasis suited to the way you sleep. Law

An Attorney’s View of the Best and the Worst Susan D’Alonzo Ament is a partner with Morris James LLP and has practiced for 33 years representing personal injury victims. Over the years, Mrs. Ament has found that some women don’t understand the crucial need to have adequate automobile insurance coverage in the event of a serious accident. Susan Ament educates women on these needs every day in her practice and in seminars that she presents throughout the year. I have been a lawyer practicing in Delaware for over thirty years. I have noticed there seem to be more automobile accidents in the summer months. Perhaps that is because people are driving around enjoying the nice weather, and people tend to stay inside during inclement weather. Why are there so many careless drivers on the roads? Why do people who are injured in automobile accidents wait so long to retain an attorney? According to the last issued Delaware State Police Traffic Statistical Report, in 2016 21,256 traffic collisions were investigated by Delaware State Police alone, resulting in 120 fatalities. An attorney always prefers to be involved earlier in a case rather than later. That gives the attorney the ability to control the direction a case takes, and to insure all aspects of a case are under control. I have found injured victims don’t understand insurance coverages, the litigation process, and may be afraid to ask important questions. Nobody wants to be in an accident. The most important thing a person can do before an accident occurs is to check their insurance coverage. Too often, clients say to me, “Oh I have full coverage.” What does that mean? You can have “full coverage” under the law, which is minimum $15,000 per person for medical bills and lost wages, known as Personal Injury Protection Coverage (PIP). If a person is seriously injured or dies as a result of an accident, $15,000 is not sufficient coverage. PIP coverage is required to be carried on every Delaware registered motor vehicle. Delaware law requires that at a minimum, each car carry $15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident coverage. Higher limits are available. I recommend you purchase the highest amount of PIP coverage you can afford. It is typically not very expensive and can provide some peace of mind nowing there is sufficient coverage for your medical bills and wage loss.

The County Woman’s Journal

I ask prospective clients to bring their automobile insurance policy to our first meeting so I can review it carefully and give them suggestions. The initial interview meeting is usually an education meeting. Injured victims come to the attorney with concerns about their car damage, their medical bills, how will they get paid for their wages, etc. I explain what negligence is under the law: failure to use reasonable care which results in injury to another is known as “negligence”. Regardless of the extent of your injuries, you do not have a case unless you can prove, by a preponderance of the evidence, that the other driver was negligent. t is very difficult when an attorney has to explain to a client that they don’t have sufficient insurance coverage given the extent of their injuries and losses. Or, they don’t have a case because it cannot be proven that the other driver was negligent under the law. When I am able to accept a new client and their case, I like to get to know the

client as well. A serious accident impacts each client differently. The only way to effectively prove to an insurance company or a jury the impact an accident and resulting injuries had on a client’s life is to really know the client. For example, I represented a client who traveled around the country competing in marathons. After being struck by a vehicle, he was robbed of that hobby for the rest of his life. I represented another gentleman who had a part-time job as a model. His accident left him with a large facial scar. e had a significant loss of income as he could no longer perform his part-time job. The injuries to one young mother from an accident left her unable to carry and care for her infant. Accidents and injuries affect everyone differently. I think it is critical to get to know each client well, and understand all aspects of their lives so no claim is left out of a case presented, and to see that a client is fairly compensated for all of their losses. or me the most difficult and worst part of the job I do is seeing a child who is hurt in an automobile accident. Often times,

Represenng Individuals Injured in Auto Accidents and at Work

a child will have difficulty e pressing everything they feel and are going through following an accident. I have seen children suffer bullying in school because of injuries or scars they may be left with following an accident. It can take a child much longer to recover from accident related injuries because they do not have the coping skills that adults have. I pride myself on being a good listener, but representing an injured child can really tug at your heart. Conversely, the best part of the job is knowing I have helped my client, adult or child, through one of the most traumatic challenges of their life. Being the presence in their lives to guide them through the insurance maze, being available to answer their questions and educate them on the best avenues legally available in their case is rewarding. It’s that hug at the end of the case that lets you know you were able to make a positive change in someone’s life…that lets you know you chose the right occupation.

Here’s what clients are saying about ReIMAGINATION Design, LLC

Hire Lucille and your experience will be like ours: we RAISED the list price, put it on the market, had 1 showing, signed a full price CASH offer in 48 hours. She masterfully decluttered and re-arranged our furniture, then added sweet touches for a “spa-likeâ€? experience in all bed and bathrooms. Place settings on tables, welcoming touches everywhere. Can you tell we were superbly happy with ReImagination Design??? List your house without hiring this professional? Your house will sit on the market, the showings will never come, and you’ll be reducing your price. - Judy W. Our realtor arranged for ReImagination Design to perform a consultation for staging our house for sale. One major consideration of ours was quickly getting the house on the market, so we were impressed with Lucille’s willingness to do a walkthrough and produce a report of her recommendations in just a few days. We elected to hire ReImagination Design to execute their staging recommendations. fter a con ersation about which ďŹ tures to keep mo e or get rid of, they took care of purchasing a few additional pieces (which we agreed to) and arrived at the house with many more for us to “borrow.â€? We were AMAZED at the speed at which they were able to transform our house, all within one day, and to coordinate colors and themes within each room. Ultimately the money spent was well worth the result, and we couldn’t have had a more pleasant experience! - Sarah A. I would highly recommend Lucille! I was Lucille’s realtor and licensed for 28 years and have not seen one home even come close to Lucille’s with her amazing staging skills and decorating. There were several similar properties on the market but we had multiple offers the ďŹ rst day and it rented for top dollar! - Kathy H.

“Jeanine O’Donnell was born and raised outside of Philadelphia. She has lived is Sussex County for almost 34 year with her husband Stephen. She has been representing State Farm for over 30 years starting as a team member, then moving to positions as a trainer and in Public Relations. Jeanine has grown her agency in Lewes, DE for almost 13 years. She and her team of licensed agents serve thousands of customers all over the state of Delaware. Offering Life & Health as well as Property asualty products in addition to financial ser ices eanine and her team pro ide education through the ma e of insurance and financial ser ices. elping life go right is more than ust a slogan to eanine and her team it is how they operate each and every day.”

By: Jeanine O’Donnell NO, it’s not allergy season—I’ve always been pretty lucky in that regard. What I am referring to is HURRICANE SEASON which begins June 1, and actually has started earlier the past several years. Colorado State University issued its preliminary forecast early in April, of a season slightly “aboveaverage” with 14 named storms: 7 to become hurricanes and three to be major. That is enough to give the insurance lady a little more grey hair! May 6-12th has been designated as HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK and www.weather.gov is a great resource for hurricane information. A valuable suggestion for Wednesday, May 9th is to “Get an Insurance Check-Up” and I couldn’t agree more. Do you know what your policy deductible is for storms? Many insurance companies in coastal areas, like Sussex County, have instituted storm deductibles that can vary from “Wind” to “Tropical Storm” to “Hurricane” and can range from 1% to as much as 5% of your dwelling amount. If you have a $300,000 home, your deductible could be $15,000! When faced with a devastating loss, could you manage a large cash outlay on top of it? Other important coverage to review includes the amount for your structure- have you made any changes, additions or alterations your agent does not know about? How much protection do you have for your contents and are there any special limits on items like jewelry, guns, antiques, collectibles… Have you done a photo inventory in the event of a loss? Make sure your pictures include closets, drawers, garages and sheds-areas that can have some costly items. Finally, you must understand that a homeowner policy normally does T include ood coverage. As your agent about ood insurance costs and availability BEFORE the little swirl appears on TV! Here are some helpful hurricane suggestions to remember as well: NEVER start your vehicle if it has been submerged. Start the drying process as much as possible and contact your insurance carrier immediately. Flood is normally covered under your COMPREHENSIVE coverage, and you can check with your carrier on your deductible. NEVER drive through water where depth cannot be determined. If your home is damaged, do what you can to make emergency repairs, cover any openings with tarps and make sure you save any receipts and document with pictures any temporary repairs. If your power is out, unplug all items to avoid possible electrical spike damage when it is restored. Only allow licensed and insured contractors to work on your home. Secure estimates as soon as you are able to help speed up the claim process.

The County Woman’s Journal

Do not dispose of any items until approved by your insurance adjuster. Make sure if a storm is pending you gather all important documents, medications, and any items important to you. Realize you may not be able to get back home for a week or longer depending on the extent of the damage. Plan accordingly and most important HEED THE EVACUATION WARNINGS IF GIVEN. Nothing is more important than your safety. Prepare NOW so that you are ready from June to November IF that watch or warning becomes a reality.

It’s why I’m here. Your home and car are more than just things. They’re where you make your memories – and they deserve the right protection. I get it. It’s why I’m here. LET’S TALK TODAY.

Hummingbirds 101 A guide to the basics of understanding, attracting, and feeding hummingbirds Presented by Connie Marshall

If you love hummingbirds and want to attract them to your home, you will enjoy this concentrated collection of information! You may also wish to visit the website of the Hummingbird Society: www.hummingbirdsociety.org

Flowers

Flowers grown in a garden or in containers are nature’s hummingbird feeder. The right combination of wild owers and e otic owers appropriate for your growing zone will attract hummingbirds, increase the number of small insects that hummingbirds require for their survival, and will bring beauty and interest to your garden. The ideal hummingbird ower contains nectar at the base of a single tubular ower this shape and lack of fragrance discourages insect use. Hummingbirds need to feed every 15 minutes and may visit as many as owers each day so owers need to be numerous and constantly regenerating. ed owers are popular but owers of other colors also contain nectar and attract hummingbirds. ee owers with a long bloom period and make sure that a great hummingbird ower is in bloom at every point during your hummingbird season, especially during the spring and fall migration periods. Additionally, it is important to provide “cover” in the form of mature trees and thick shrubbery.

Some of the best and easiest to grow hummingbird flowers include: Lonicera sempervirens (Trumpet Honeysuckle) Red Monarda acob line’(Bee Balm) u hea David Verity Salvia guaranitica (Blue Anise Sage) Salvia coccinea (Scarlet Sage)

58 I Summer 2018

Agastache rupestris (Sunset Hyssop) am sis radicans (Trumpet Creeper) Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower) Fuchsia triphylla (Honeysuckle Fuchsia) Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii (Turk’s Cap) usticia s icigera(Mexican Honeysuckle) Ipomopsis rubra (Standing Cypress) Nicotiana mutabilis(Flowering Tobacco) Tecomaria capensis(Cape Honeysuckle) Salvia endy s ish anna indica (Wild Canna) Hamelia patens (Firebush) Erythrina herbacea (Coral Bean) Anisacanthis wrightii (Flame Acanthus)

Feeders

Type: The best feeder is one you are able and

willing to clean. If the feeder ports are above the pool of liquid there is less tendency to drip, a messy problem that attracts ants.

Size: Use a feeder whose size matches your

population. on’t fi ll it upif all the nectar isn’t being used. Several small feeders are better thanone large feeder and will support more hummers, helping deal with territoriality.

Recipe: Dissolve 1 cup table sugar (cane

preferred, beet is OK) in 4 cups water. Do not use any other sugar— not turbinado, brown sugar etc. and never use honey or artifi cial sweeteners. Spring water is best, but most tap water is don’t use distilled water.

Community Service Awareness Dr. Andrea Goldstein

Dr. Goldstein is a board-certified specialist in gastroenterology/hepatology who received her medical degree from Georgetown University. She enjoys being on the leading edge of new treatments for diseases that in the past had no cure. Dr. Goldstein is one of the physicians who perform the CRH O’Regan System at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates, for internal hemorrhoids. In most cases if the CRH O’Regan system is deemed appropriate, it can be performed at your initial consultation. Dr. Goldstein is an involved mother, helping her children with piano lessons and volunteering with Girl Scouts. She was trained in opera and sings in the community choir. She is also active with her synagogue, including delivering food to a local shelter through the Jewish Relief Agency. “As a doctor, I strive to give my patients the best possible medical care they can receive, in an environment where they can feel comfortable. This starts with talking and listening closely to ensure that I get a complete picture of the patient’s medical history and symptoms, and also that my patient understands what she needs to know to follow her treatment plan and return for the follow-up testing she needs to protect her health. Giving my time, compassion and full attention is as important as any test or procedure I perform.”

HEMORRHOIDAL TREATMENT Over half the population will experience some type of hemorrhoidal problem in their lifetime. You may be suffering in silence because you are too embarrassed to discuss the problem, or worry that the cure will be more painful than the problem itself. Now, advances in medicine have made hemorrhoid treatment fast and virtually painless. our only challenge is finding a doctor who offers the right treatment and makes you feel comfortable receiving it. How do hemorrhoids develop? Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and engorged veins in the anal and rectal region. They are most commonly caused by changes in frequency of bowel movements, pressure of straining and hormonal changes or pressure during pregnancy. The veins swell and stretch and gradually lose the support of surrounding connective tissue. Hemorrhoids can cause the following symptoms: Itching/Burning Bleeding Protrusion during Bowel Movements Pain Hygiene Concerns Are all hemorrhoids the same? emorrhoids are actually classified into four stages based upon severity. This helps determine which treatment is most appropriate for you. 1) Stage I: The hemorrhoids remain inside at all times. They do not protrude from the anus. 2) Stage II: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but reduce spontaneously. 3) Stage III: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but require manual insertion. 4) Stage IV: Fourth degree hemorrhoids: The most severe hemorrhoids always protrude and cannot be pushed back inside. What are the treatment options for removing hemorrhoids? Effective hemorrhoid treatment depends on your specific medical condition. o doctor should recommend a solution without first doing an e am

The County Woman’s Journal

to rule out other potential causes of rectal pain or bleeding.

Once you have been diagnosed with hemorrhoids, you will have different options to choose from, depending on the severity of your case. You may get ade uate relief from increasing fiber in your diet taking warm sitz baths and using topical creams. Treatment options include a variety of minimally invasive procedures that cut off blood ow to the hemorrhoid and cause it to shrink. In some cases your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remove e cess tissue. What is the most painless method for treatment? An even less invasive and pain-free solution has recently been approved for internal hemorrhoids. This new banding option, the CRH O’Regan System ™ is considered the “gold standard” in treatment and almost eliminates the discomfort and recovery time associated with other hemorrhoid removal options. During the 60 SECOND procedure, the physician uses a gentle suction device to place a small rubber band around the tissue, just above the hemorrhoid. There are very few nerve endings in this area to cause any pain. The hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within a day or two. Research has shown that 99.8% of patients treated with the CRH O’Regan System ™ have no post-procedure pain and require no pain medication before, during, or after the procedure. There is no bowel prep, and you can drive yourself home afterwards. Another advantage e ternal hemorrhoids may also improve with this option. Make an appointment with a specialist If you or a family member is ready to get permanent relief from hemorrhoids, you should make an appointment with a digest specialist for an accurate diagnosis and the

most appropriate treatments available. Only doctors who have been specially trained by CRH O’Regan System ™ trainers/doctors are licensed to provide this state-of-the-art banding treatment. Locally, it is performed at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates (HGA).

Please call 908-483-2047 to make an appointment.

Thinking of buying Real Estate?

Our Team of agents are ready to assist you. Here is what one of our buyer clients had to say about us.

We began our search for the best realtors in the Sussex County Delaware area via the internet. We quickly received a list of prospects and met with several real estate agents . From the first contact that we had with Emma Payne we felt confident that she would be able to quickly and professionally sell our house. We were not disappointed! Emma knows the area real estate market and has a good working knowledge of her client list and this resulted in us receiving an offer for our townhouse within ten days. This was a second home for us and we were not in the area for the two months prior to the closing. Emma handled everything in our absence keeping us informed along the way. What a relief it was knowing that we could rely on her and her team ! She was accessible, friendly and extremely helpful during the entire process from listing through closing and we would highly recommend DelMarVa Resorts Realty and the Emma Payne Group. - Jim and Kalat Sylvis
