Have An Overactive Bladder & Medication Didn’t Help? Don’t Give Up An Implant that sends the right electrical impulses to the nerves

ou might have heard about medications and other therapies for improving urge incontinence and overactive bladder, which causes a frequent, urgent urge to pass urine that sometimes results in leaking.

But many women still are not aware of a highly successful, simple therapy called sacral neuromodulation which treats urge incontinence and overactive bladder by helping the nerves in the bladder to function properly.

No more uncomfortable pads, no more staking out the nearest restroom, no more staying home because you never know when the urge to go will come. No wonder so many patients say they wish they had learned about the implant years ago.

Here’s how it works. To control the nerves of the bladder, a small device called InterStim® is inserted, through the skin, near the tailbone, also known as the sacrum. It works by sending the right nerve impulses to the nerves of the bladder, which decreases the urge to urinate.

Since approval by the FDA in 1998, it has demonstrated a good

The implant is permanent. The battery that powers it has a life span of five to seven years. Patients can check their hand-held device to check if the battery is getting low, or they will notice a return of symptoms. Battery replacement is a procedure that takes about ten minutes to perform.

During the evaluation phase, patients keep a diary of their urination and leakage to gauge if the device is helping. Most patients say the impact is almost immediate, often within 24 hours.

Take it for a trial run

This device is unique in that patients can try it out to determine if it’s a good fit for them. The evaluation phase can be as short as four days or as long as two weeks.

If patients’ symptoms are greatly improved or cured during the evaluation, they can go on to longterm use of InterStim® therapy, in which the device is implanted.

Over the years, we have had many request for prescription sunglasses as well as contact lens wearers choosing plano (non-prescription) sunglasses to wear over their contacts. Our inventory of sunglasses re ects those re uests ranging from sport lines sunch as Kaneon, Maui Jim, costa Del Mar, and Oakley to fashion lines such as Tiffany, Tom Ford, Kate Spade, Barton Perreira, Porscha, Ray Ban and many others inventoried in most of our locations. Having been in the industry for over 35 years, I have witnessed the evolution of lens designs to enable better vision, protection, and ease of wear in the sunglass lenses. The digital revolution has been a key to enabling these compensation factors, broadening the availability in many frames and prescriptions, as well as treatments and materials. The fitting of sunglasses still re uires prescription analysis to steer the patient to the frame more suitable to their prescription, but the choices have increased dramatically over the past five years.

He completed his post-graduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia with a residency in internal medicine (1991-1994), Chief Medical Resident (1994-1995), and cardiology fellowship (1995-1998).

Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July 1998. He has served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Dr. Rosa is trained in non-invasive cardiology, Nuclear Transesopageal Echocardiograms, as well as invasive diagnostic procedures and pacemaker implantations.

There are a number of popular beliefs out there about your cardiovascular health that might be misleading and dangerous when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Here are some of the most common ones: 1. “Heart disease runs in my family, so it’s only a matter of time until I get it too” No question there is a strong genetic component to heart disease, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it.

On the contrary, a strong and consistent set of measures should be taken early to dramatically reduce your risk: stay active, don’t smoke, strict cholesterol control, treat diabetes and hypertension, reduce salt intake, change and stay on a healthy diet.

2. Chest pain is a sure sign of a heart attack”. Not quite. Chest pain remains the most common symptom of a heart attack, but there are many others just as important that can be subtle: Shortness of breath,

dizziness, nausea, pain or discomfort in the arms, shoulders, jaw, mid upper back, or palpitations. It’s important to recognize any so these symptoms and to call 911 immediately.

3. “ I can get to the hospital just as fast ( or faster) than the ambulance can” Wrong and very dangerous for many reasons: The emergency medical system staff will initiate the right treatment and activate the hospital system ahead of your arrival in the hospital. You will get into the emergency department much faster. Don’t be a fool, call 911 and let them help you instead. People have had cardiac arrest while driving and have become unconscious, causing fatal accidents.

4. “ I am too young to worry about heart disease”. An early adoption of a healthy life style will have a tremendous impact in the prevention of cardiovascular disease later on. The heart attack someone might have in their 40’s or 50’s began as a process of plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries and others in childhood and adolescent years. So, educating your children for life long healthy living is perhaps the most important legacy.

8. “ I stopped my medicines because my blood pressure was normal, or my cholesterol was normal or I feel good now”. Very often people assume that once your blood pressure and cholesterol reach the recommended levels, then the job is done and the medications are no longer needed.

The reality is these are chronic problems and need maintenance and continued treatment. Please consult with your doctor before stoping any medication on your own. eeling better is fine, but it might be because you have been on that treatment in the first place. f you are having trouble affording medications, talk to your doctor to be switched to a less expensive alternative or they may have certain discount programs available to you.

9. “Aspirin is a good blood thinner to prevent strokes if you have atrial fi rillation . This is a common one. The truth is that if you have this heart rhythm problem you are at a much higher risk for a stroke and you need to be on a true blood thinner, such as warfarin or one of the newer

agents now available on the market. Aspirin alone is not an effective treatment in this situation.

10. “Drinking a glass of wine a day reduces your risk of heart disease.” The question is -- how big is your glass of wine? The recommended amount of daily consumption of wine is 5 ounces for women and men over the age of 65. For men under age 65 they can have 2 glasses of 5 ounce each.

The standard wine glasses hold between 12-14 ounces of wine, so it is very easy to consume more than intended. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which has been studied in animals to potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, but recent research has discredited some of this claim.

The same antioxidant can be obtained from eating grapes and drinking grape juice, so wine consumption is not necessary for this potential benefit.

Just some food for thought. Maybe over a glass of red wine, or maybe not.

5. “Diabetes won’t affect my heart so long as I take my medicines”. It’s critically important to keep a very strict control of diabetes and sugar levels to reduce the risk of a heart attack and stroke. However, you still remain at high risk for those events.

Weight loss, regular exercise, smoking cessation, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol become even more important if you are also diabetic.

6. “ I will know when my blood pressure is high because I will have a headache” High blood pressure continues to be a “silent killer” and most people will have no symptoms, until it’s late and other organ systems are involved. Early detection and effective treatment of high blood pressure are absolutely critical in preventing stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney failure. Check your blood pressure regularly and discuss it with your health care provider.

7. “ Cholesterol checks are for older people”. Not exactly. The American Heart Association recommends an initial cholesterol check at age 20. Early detection and intervention are very important. If you have a very strong family history for heart disease, checking before age 20 is a good idea as well. Again a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstone of treatment.

Thirty five years ago, concerned members of the community first brought hospice care to Delaware with the founding of Delaware Hospice. ondra atterfield, M ,L Delaware Hospice s Manager of amily upport ervices, has appreciated the positive impact of its care and programs over the years and can t imagine coping with a serious illness without their support. ondra remembers hearing about her parents friends and neighbors who were cared for

by Delaware Hospice. he said, very year, my folks would attend the local estival of Trees in honor of someone they knew. hen her father became seriously ill in 1 2, she learned firsthand why Delaware Hospice had grown and had earned such an outstanding reputation in just ten years. he said, ur primary nurse, athy sgood, became our go to person. f anyone had uestions, concerns or needed help, we d say etter call athy. he was always there, always personable, and always helpful.

Ten years later, ondra s mother grew weary of her three year battle with cancer and called Delaware Hospice for comfort and care. ondra remembers, ur nurses e pertly administered medications that kept her comfortable and alert. ertified nursing assistants provided personal care, which was a great help because she didn t want us to do this. ur social worker also played an important role, listening to each of our concerns and suggesting solutions.

He continued his studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, receiving his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (1984- 1987), where he became Chief Resident. “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep”

I

nsomnia is becoming an epidemic in our society. As with everything, there are pluses and minuses to the advancements we’ve made; for instance, electric light. It’s wonderful that we’re no longer dependent on the sun as our sole source of light. We can have light anytime, anywhere we want it! On the ip side of this, e no feel compelled to work more (because we can), in a 24 hour society.

So, in addition the stress this adds, we’re also now subjected to more blue light during times that nature did not intend. Blue light suppresses the hormone, melatonin, which is necessary to induce sleep. And so it goes!

Unfortunately, the world we presently live in does not lend itself well to our getting a good night’s sleep. But, it is the world we have, and for the most part, enjoy! So, given our situation, what are we to do?

A sleeping pill may be effective at addressing your sleep problems in the short-term, however, often times, they can lead to a number of side effects such as daytime drowsiness and next day impairment. If you’re thinking sleeping pills, you may be headed in the wrong direction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, or CBT-I, is a drug free treatment, and is no the first treatment of choice. The inability to sleep well, not related to physical issues, or serious psychological disorders, is what’s called Primary Insomnia.

CBT-I addresses the cognitions and behaviors that might stand in the way of your getting to sleep, staying asleep, or both. It is a wellresearched, standardized treatment program ith a specific protocol that must be followed. It’s not easy, but the payoff is that you could have vast improvement in as little as six to eight weeks!

What is required is that you begin by keeping a “Sleep Diary” to evaluate your sleep habits. It would include such things as the time you go to bed, time you to go to sleep, number of awakenings, etc.

After your particular issues have been identified, detailed instructions about “Sleep Hygiene” would be discussed, and you would need to follow through with necessary changes. For some individuals, this solves the problem, although that is not common.

If you are experiencing insomnia, Delaware Sleep Disorders Centers has a team of professionals that provide a variety of diagnostic and treatment tools to evaluate and correct a number of sleep disorders. CBT-I is one of the many solutions we offer.

The next step involves what is called “Stimulus Control”. Going to bed and getting out of bed at certain times are examples of this. The more time you spend awake in bed, the more you associate your bed with wakefulness, and not sleep.

Diagnosis and treatment for many disorders may begin after just one night. When performing a sleep study, our technologists work closely with our medical director – (a physician who is board certified in Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine or Neurology) – to identify and confirm sleep disorders, measure their severity and recommend multiple treatment options.

If you’re still not sleeping, you then move to “Sleep Restriction”.

This is the most difficult step and best done on a weekend or some other time you can tolerate a few days of being fatigued or experience daytime drowsiness. This involves limiting the amount of time you are allowed to sleep. The good news is that it doesn’t take many nights of this for it to work!

During all these steps, negative cognitions associated with sleep and other stressors are discussed and reassessed. Obsessing about problems when you’re supposed to be sleeping will only make them worse. While healthy sleep is important, not everyone needs eight hours, and even if you do, a few bad nights are not a disaster.

Finally, there are many different relaxation techniques that are useful not just for sleep, but for other stressful life situations.

Everyone should be aware of one that works for them. Knowing how to calm yourself has been proven to be of benefit for overall good health.

Nanticoke Offers Lung Cancer Screening: Reducing Lung Cancer Mortality by 20% As you may already know, lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. And while there are several causes of lung cancer, smoking is at the top of the list.

For many, lung cancer develops without symptoms. If a person is experiencing symptoms, the cancer is much more likely to have already spread to other parts of the body, making it more difficult to treat. The good news…like with many cancers, if diagnosed early the chances of surviving lung cancer increase significantly. study funded by the National Cancer Institute of patients using the low dose T scan to detect lung cancer found a 20 percent reduction in the death rate due to this disease, because the cancer was found earlier.

How the Screening Works: The low dose T scan takes multiple, cross-sectional images of the lungs, providing detailed views that can reveal nodules too small to show up on a traditional ray. t actually detect(s) abnormalities the size of a grain of rice. This is important because the larger the tumor, the higher the chance the cancer has spread. The scan takes less the (than) si ty seconds and keeps the (delete this word) e posure to radiation at a minimum. There are no injections and nothing to swallow.

This screening is covered by most insurance providers if you meet the criteria: re between the ages of 55-80; Medicare patients, between the ages of 55-77. re a current smoker or you have quit within the past fifteen years.

• Have smoked an equivalent of 3 pack years. This means you have smoked about 1 pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for fifteen years.

Have not had a chest T scan in the last year.

• Do not have any signs or symptoms of lung cancer.

It is important you have a conversation with your health care provider before scheduling the screening. Some insurance providers, including Medicare, require a separate shared decision making visit to discuss the risks, benefits and other health care information surrounding this

screening. This visit is re uired

by Medicare for the costs of this screening to be covered by insurance. If you do not have insurance you may qualify for other financial assistance from Delaware’s Screenings for Life program. Your healthcare provider must schedule the screening.

Myths About Lung Cancer: feel fine. don t need to be tested.” A low-dose CT lung screening is a test specifically designed for those without any symptoms. People with lung cancer do not typically have symptoms until the cancer has spread. If you have a high risk for lung cancer, getting tested before you have symptoms may save your life.

“I quit smoking years ago so I don’t have to worry about lung cancer.” While quitting smoking is one of the most important things you have done for your health, your risk for lung cancer is still higher than someone who has never smoked. If you have quit in the past 15 years, you may still be a candidate for the lung cancer screening. Talk with your provider.

“I don’t want to get screened because I don’t want extra radiation exposure.” This is good to discuss with your provider. For those at high risk for lung cancer, the benefits of the low dose T scan may out weight the small risks that come from the low levels of radiation exposure.

“I’ve heard that things that aren’t cancer show up on the test. Does that mean I shouldn’t trust the

test?” Many adults have spots on their lungs that are not cancer.

There are guidelines to help doctors determine if a spot is more likely to be cancer. Doctors ready (reading?) the results are radiologists trained in these guidelines.

CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell.

Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas.

What are the most common areas to be treated?

Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. The Weight is Over: To Sleeve or Not to Sleeve?

Thomas P. Barnett, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Barnett graduated from Princeton University in 1983 and obtained his medical degree from George Washington University in 198 . He co leted his surgical training at ho as efferson niversity affiliate an enau Hos ital in hiladel hia in 199 . He served in the .S. ir orce at Dover ir orce Base D B fro 199 199 where he started the a arosco ic Minimally Invasive & Ambulatory Surgery programs. Dr. Barnett was Chief of Surgery at DAFB Hospital in 1995 and 1996. He has continued to practice surgery in Dover, Delaware ever since being honorably discharged and he founded his private practice, Surgical ssociates, . ., in 1999. Dr. Barnett is Board Certified in Surgery and is a ellow of the erican College of Surgeons.

He is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Medical Society of Delaware. Dr. Barnett has special interests in weight loss surgery. He currently serves as the medical director of bariatric surgery at BayhealthMilford Memorial Hospital and the Delaware Surgery Center in Dover.

Weight loss surgery has evolved over the last 30 years. Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (”Sleeve surgery”) or taking out a portion of the stomach (see diagram 1) has emerged as the most common weight loss procedure in America over the last couple of years. It is estimated that in 2017, 70-80% of the weight loss surgeries done in the US will be the sleeve gastrectomy. This surgery is done through a series of incisions, most of which are the diameter of a dime.

The Sleeve surgery basically converts the stomach from football size to banana size. The decreased size of the stomach

causes a restriction feeling to the patient when they eat and therefore they will eat less. In addition, the surgery removes a part of the stomach that produces a hormone called ghrelin, which is secreted by the oxyntic cells of the fundus in response to fasting. Ghrelin stimulates appetite. The Sleeve decreases the amount of ghrelin produced and therefore patients are able to better control their hunger.

Patients who have weight loss surgery have significant positive metabolic effects as well. Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea improve and therefore decrease obesity related morbidity and mortality. Many patients will be able to decrease or completely get off medications for high blood pressure and diabetes. Back and knee pain also improve with weight loss.

In a recent study from the Netherlands on 1000 patients undergoing sleeve surgery, they found on average, an excess weight loss of . in the first postoperative

year, 84.2% after two years, and 84.5% after 3 years. Pre-existent comorbidities appear to improve or even resolve after sleeve surgery. Resolution of type 2 diabetes occurs in 60-96% of the patients.

Dr. Sandra Costa is not only a family physician, but a sleeve surgery patient of Dr. Barnett’s herself. She has lost 108 pounds since starting her “sleeve journey.” She had her surgery in November 2015 at Milford Memorial Hospital. “I consider that day my rebirthday. I was born obese at almost 12 pounds and put on weight every year until my sleeve journey began. I feel much better and more energetic.”

Francis Fooks, another patient of Dr. Barnett’s, has gone from 318 to 183 pounds 10 months after her Sleeve surgery. “I was able to get off all my medications and get rid of my sleep apnea machine. This surgery has given me my life back! Dr. Barnett, Nicole Fisher ,PA-C, the team at Surgical

There are risks with all weight loss surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to bleeding, infection, obstruction, leaks, and the need for reoperation. Death has occurred in rare cases. Fortunately, with the sleeve gastrectomy, safety profiles have been proven to be high with few serious complications. Sleeve surgery causes less nutritional deficiencies post operatively compared to the gastric bypass.

Complications after Sleeve surgery in the literature vary from 2.9 to 9.5% which appear to be lower than the complication rate after gastric bypass, varying between 4.6 and 20.5% in the literature.

According to Alana Martin, Hudson Health’s Peer Recovery Specialist, “One of the most important foundations you need in recovery is a Higher Power. Without a Higher Power in my life, I would feel completely overwhelmed, which could lead to a relapse. It’s one of the many tools I rely on every day to stay on the path of recovery.”

With this in mind, we contracted with Heidi McNeeley, a registered Holy Yoga Instructor and Founder of The Worcester County Warriors Against Opiate Addiction, to provide yoga instruction at our treatment campus in Salisbury, Maryland. “Yoga helps to clear all the extraneous stuff,

the ‘background noise’ that interferes with whatever we are trying to focus on” says McNeeley.

“So when people are focusing on recovery, yoga helps to direct that focus. Yoga also helps physically, relieving the tight, stressed out muscles and teaching us to breathe, to let go.”

According to Recovery.org, yoga can help people in recovery learn how to calm themselves without the use of alcohol or drugs, in addition to improving mental and physical health. ome of the benefits include • Relax and lower stress. Certain physiological changes that take place in the body help to lower heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol (the stress hormone) and adrenaline levels.

To help in determining when an older adult may need assistance in the home, here is a list of 10 warning signs. Any one of the following behaviors may indicate the need to take action. It is also important to inform the older adult’s physician of these changes.

1. Changing eating habits, resulting in weight loss, appetite loss, or missed meals 2. Neglecting personal hygiene, including clothing, body odor, oral health, nails, and skin 3. Neglecting the home, with a noticeable change in tidiness and/or sanitation 4. Exhibiting inappropriate behavior, such as being unusually loud, quiet, paranoid,

or agitated, or making phone calls at unusual hours 5. Changing relationship patterns, causing friends and neighbors to express concern 6. Showing physical injuries, such as burns, which may have resulted from general weakness, forgetfulness, or misuse of alcohol or medication 7. Decreasing or stopping participation in activities that were once enjoyable, such as a bridge or book club, dining with friends, or attending religious services 8. Exhibiting forgetfulness, resulting in unopened mail, newspaper piles, unfilled prescriptions, or missed appointments . Mishandling finances, such as not paying bills or paying them more than once and losing or hiding money 10. Making unusual purchases, such as more than one subscription to the same magazine, entering an unusually large number of contests, or increasing purchases from television advertisements

Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. Whether you’re maintaining a vegetable garden or adorning your yard with fragrant spring owers and bushes, using this e uipment can result in back and neck pain, as well as more serious muscular strains and tears if not used properly. The repetitive motion that your body undergoes when using such equipment can bring on a whole host of mechanical problems within the body.

Utilize the following tips to help you enjoy a safe, productive day of summer landscaping: • Regardless of what piece of equipment you are using, make sure it has a strap—and that you use it. Place the strap over your head on the shoulder on the opposite side of your body from the device. This will help normalize your center of gravity.

• Be sure to switch the side on which you are operating the equipment as often as possible, and to balance the muscles being used, alternate your stance and motion frequently.

• Take frequent breaks.

• Consider electric-powered items, especially if you experience back or neck pain, as they tend to be lighter than their engine-powered counterparts.

• When picking up or putting down your equipment, be sure to bend from the knees, not at the waist.

• Keep the object close to your body as you lift, not at arm’s length. While it is critical that you operate your yard equipment safely, it is equally important that you prepare your body for the work you are about to do. To help avoid injury, be sure to include a warm-up/cool-down period that involves stretching.

Before stretching, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Always warm up a muscle before stretching. Breathe in and out slowly throughout each stretching exercise until the muscle is stretched to its furthest point. At that point, hold your breath in. When you relax, breathe out. Stretch gently and smoothly. Do not bounce or jerk your body in any way and stretch as far as you can comfortably. You should not feel pain. Following are stretches recommended for getting the most out of the time you spend in the yard: 1. Stand up and prop your heel on a door step or stool with your knee slightly bent. Bend forward until you feel a slight pull at the back of the thigh, called the hamstring. You may need to stabilize yourself by holding onto a garage door handle. Hold the position for 20 seconds, then relax. Do it once more, then repeat with the other leg.

2. Stand up and put your right hand against a wall or other stable surface. Bend your left knee and grab your ankle with your left hand. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to stretch the quadricep muscle at the front of your thigh. Hold the position for 20 seconds, relax and do it again. Repeat with the other leg.

3. eave your fingers together above your head with your palms up. Lean to one side for 10 seconds to stretch the side of your upper body, then reverse. Repeat two or three times.

4. Hug yourself. Wrap your arms around yourself after letting your breath out and rotate to one side, as far as you can go. Hold it for 10 seconds. Then reverse. Repeat two or three times.

Following these tips should provide you with successful and pain free gardening, but if it doesn’t, visit your local Doctor of Chiropractic for safe and effective treatment of your pain. Happy Spring!

Ovarian Cancer...What All Women (and Those Who Love Them) Need to Know!

Each year more than 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States, resulting in over 15,500 deaths. It is the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, affecting approximately 1 in 70 women. Because there is no reliable diagnostic screening, it often goes undetected or is misdiagnosed until it has advanced to the later stages.

Less than 20% of cases are discovered in the early stage. Due to late diagnoses and a very high recurrence rate (70-90%), less than 50% of women make it to the 5 year milestone.

Ovarian cancer does not discriminate and can affect females of any age and ethnic background. It continues to be one of the most underfunded cancers and the lack of public awareness and education is of critical concern.

Although the symptoms of ovarian cancer often are not intense in the early stages, they are NOT silent. Once thought to be a ‘silent disease’, research indicates that 95% of women DO have vague but persistent symptoms. These symptoms are not always useful for diagnosis since they may be indicative of other less serious conditions. If any of the following single or combination of symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, consult your physician and insist that a manual exam and transvaginal ultrasound be performed. If any abnormalities are detected, a referral to a gynecologic oncologist may be in order.

• Bloating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary symptoms (frequency or urgency)

Even if your ovaries have been removed, it is possible to develop Primary Peritoneal Cancer (PPC), a rare form of cancer, which is closely related to ovarian cancer. The peritoneum is a thin sheet of tissue that protects and supports the abdominal organs. When certain cells transform into cancerous cells, the result is PPC. The cause is not known.

Symptoms are more gastrointestinal in nature and may include: · abdominal bloating · changes in bowel habits · an early feeling of fullness after eating Nausea and vomiting may occur when bloating is severe.

Medical evaluation and treatment is the same as for ovarian cancer and recurrences are common. There is no screening for PPC.

“The doctors told us Journey will probably never walk, move, smile, or laugh; but with Easterseals she’s just meeting goal after goal,” Rich says. “Now, I feel like the sky’s the limit, because they’ve laid a foundation for us. Maybe one day she’ll be walking across the stage getting a diploma. That’s my hope.”

Mark Quigley manages the Sussex County Habitat ReStore in Georgetown and the new Lewes ReStore which opened on March 4th. Habitat ReStores sell new and gently used home improvement goods, furniture, appliances and other products donated by manufacturers, retailers, builders, and individuals. Profits support usse ounty Habitat’s home building, repairs, and family empowerment programs.

Mark joined the usse Habitat staff in eptember of 2 13. He first learned about Habitat for Humanity when his daughter volunteered during spring break to repair hurricane damaged homes in Florida. “It is rewarding to help people improve their lives and continue to grow personally and professionally, Mark commented. “There’s a lot of work to be done. We’ve only just begun.”

Originally from Queens, New York, Mark now resides in Milton where he has served on the Zoning and Planning Commission. Prior to assuming the management of Sussex Habitat ReStore operations, Mark owned Go Green Mobile Cleaning in Rehoboth. In his free time, Mark enjoys local theater and exploring museums.

In his late teens Ron owned an ice cream and Italian ice business with retail vending trucks then purchased an Italian ice factory in Smyrna. Living in Wilmington for 20 years he began in the window and siding business in 1979, which evolved into offering full remodeling services to homeowners. Ron has trained in all aspects of his business under several gurus of the industry and was trained in the sunroom industry by Dave Yoho, a leading sales consultant to Fortune 500 companies.

A resident of Sussex County since 1998, Ron’s interests have included studies of such notables as Earl Nightingale, Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, and Tom Hopkins. Intrigued by the spirituality of Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Ram Das and Dan Millman, he strived to apply those teachings to his life. Ron enjoys ancient mysteries, the origins and cosmology of the universe, personal empowerment and the future potential of mankind.

Having traveled extensively throughout the world, he comes from an international family with his Mother and siblings being German citizens from Munich and stepfather a surgeon from ndia. on also grew up around aviation as his father was a commercial pilot ying everything from helicopters to passenger jets. s a boy, he spent summers at his father s ight school in Pennsylvania assisting the student pilots.

His hobbies have included Tennis, skiing, building and ying aircraft, electronics and computer programming. Ron believes in giving back blessings to the community and supports many notable charities along with four children overseas.

Ron is the owner of Patio Systems in Lewes Delaware, a local awning and sunroom Company since 2001.

He is responsible for meeting with homeowners to determine their needs and managing his staff of 12 employees including 8 carpenters and installers. Ron began his studies in mechanical engineering at Penn State University main campus on a Navy ROTC scholarship but soon decided that an education in business would be more appropriate for self-employment.

Dean Bennett is the owner / operator of Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions. He was born and raised in Berlin, Md and married his high school sweetheart of 33 years, Belinda Bennett, and together they have one son, Troy Bennett. Belinda plays a vital role behind the scenes for the business, however, she works fulltime in healthcare as a medical dosimetrist at the Tunnel Cancer Center for Beebe Healthcare.

Dean served in the United States Army and is very proud to be a veteran. After fulfilling his obligation to the military, his path in this industry began as a temporary, part time sales position. With his military background, leadership became second nature. Add to that time, experience and the knowledge base of the pest industry along with the “art of the sale”, Dean found his niche. Born and raised on the shore taught him the importance of building trusting and meaningful relationships which helped shape his business. Dean is a firm believer that a successful business resides on the foundation of owner accessibility and quality, professional service. Chris and his brother, Tony, started Budget Blinds back in 2005 and now they and their highly experienced staff cover the southern half of Delaware from just south of Dover on down and three counties in Maryland. Both he and his brother are native Sussex Countians in fact their family has been here for many generations and self employment was a model presented to them early with one grandfather an area farmer and the other owning a shoe shop just off the circle in Georgetown. Growing up in a close family, they were taught the virtues of love, grace, loyalty, and hard work. They were always taught to be accountable to one another, to work first, play later and if it’s worth doing, it is worth doing right. They carry those values into both their personal lives and in the business that they run.

After more than ten years of Budget Blinds they have acquired a great deal of knowledge about window coverings and running a business in general but they feel that one of their best assets is the desire to learn more and improve along the way. With only 10 full time employees, including the two of them, and one part time, they have nearly 70 years of experience when combined. That is a particular point of pride because they feel it is an indicator of what really makes a good company, which is employees that love what they do. They know that a person who is enjoying their job, will do it better and with more care.

That leads to what Chris and Tony feel is their most important skill and that is choosing employees. “If we make sure our employees and our clients are happy, our happiness will always fall right in line.” says Chris.

Chris is Married to his wife Julie who is a speech pathologist for a local elementary school and they have 2 boys, Gavin and Parker who are 8 and 6 respectively. He loves just being around his family, reading, golfing and fishing.

Christopher Calzone General Manager, Furniture and More Christopher Calzone is the General Manager for Furniture and More’s new Fenwick Island location. He got his start with the company in May of 2016, in the sales department of the Rehoboth Beach location. Christopher moved to Delaware in 2016 with his then girlfriend (now wife), looking for a change of pace. He settled on Lewes, Delaware for the simple reason of, who wouldn’t want to live at the beach? Christopher enjoys all things sports when he is not at the office. He is also involved with his church and has taken part in various community outreach programs.

He and his wife oelle are e pecting their first child, Lillie na, in May. The past year has been full of surprises and new beginnings for Christopher and, he is very excited for this next chapter in his life.

Keep the elements out– Enclose your screen porch!

Spring is coming and you’re dreading having to deal with the pollen and dirt in your screen porch. How about a permanent solution?

Many homeowners are familiar with the popular sunroom additions on the market today, and those who have purchased one enjoy the extra living space available for family gatherings or evening relaxation as well as high return on investment value.

However did you know that existing screen porches can be enclosed as well at a fraction of the price of a new sunroom addition? Now is the time to plan for this project.

Many of today’s homes have decks or are now often being built with screen porches as a standard feature. Exposed to the elements, decks and patios are often simply too hot or too cold to use much of the year. Screen porches offer shade and some bug protection; but, summer heat, dirt, rain, and winter cold with snow and ice again restrict comfortable usage to a short while out of the year.

Studies and testimonials indicate that a sunroom addition, or conversion of an existing porch, is very likely to become the most enjoyed and well used room in the house. They offer protection from bugs, dirt, pollen and bad weather while preserving the outdoor feel of a deck or patio. Sunrooms maximize the seasons you can enjoy your back yard and your view and are today can be more sophisticated in terms of thermal efficiency and ultraviolet protection.

The building industry is strongly committed toward pre-fabricated, panelized, or modular enclosure systems.

This is due to the many advantages of making the product indoors in a controlled environment, to close tolerances, using modern equipment and techniques. The jobsite work is greatly reduced for a quick installation to eliminate the stress and mess of a stick framed construction project at your home.

While all factory made sunroom additions offer a degree of standardized quality control, there are so many variations of the old 60’s Florida room, that it must be extremely confusing to a homeowner to select the best product for your money.

Inexpensive aluminum screen or glass enclosures may install quicker and have less maintenance than a stick built

addition, but they conduct heat and cold, the finish can scratch or the kick panels can dent easily. Better rooms with aluminum structure are now being built by many fabricators using vinyl clad insulated panels and powder coated paint finishes (like a car) for added durability. The best have thermally broken wall mullions, insulated foam core walls and can be purchased with insulated UV blocking glass.

Over the past few decades, many products formerly made of wood or metal are now made of vinyl. Look at what happened to aluminum siding, cast iron drain pipes, and alls sorts of car parts, and today you see vinyl everywhere. While there are some vinyl clad sunroom products on the market, they tend to be expensive with bulky frames since the vinyl is not structural and must have aluminum internal support.

These rooms are similar to “stick building” and must be assembled from parts one piece at a time on site. This places the quality control in the hands of the installer and workmanship can vary. Some of the more popular vinyl clad systems available locally use window technology that dates back to the 80’s in which the frames of the windows and sashes are screwed together with corner gussets. These outdated window systems date back before welded frames became the norm. They are still being used since it is a daunting task to totally retool sunroom factories components and production systems.

Hello My name is Richard Lamb. I am a Delaware native,born and raised in Wilmington. Recently retired as a Captain from the Wilmington Fire Department with 35 years of service.

The Fire department schedule allotted time off for a 2nd job. I began painting approximately 30 years ago. Parents brought us to the beach when we were very young. Got a taste and new I wanted to live here. Moved to Rehoboth 8 years ago and started up the business.

At this point, your heat pump’s output exactly equals the heating needs of the conditioned space. In other words, your heat pump needs to run constantly to produce enough heat to maintain a comfortable temperature. Below the balance point, supplementary heat is needed to maintain your thermostat’s set point; your auxiliary or electric heat will kick on to help out, usually indicated by a light on your thermostat. Your electric heat will run just long enough to satisfy your thermostat’s set point before turning off again.

If the outdoor temperature remains below your system’s balance point, your indoor temperature will drop a few degrees while your heat pump tries to keep up before your electric heat turns on again. So, don’t be alarmed if you’ve got the thermostat set at 70° and it’s only reaching 68°. To maintain 70° below your balance point, turn your thermostat up to 72° or 73°, but keep in mind that your electric heat will run longer to reach that temperature. In order to keep your electricity costs down, set the thermostat at the lowest point at which you feel comfortable (maybe even in a sweater and socks) and utilize your programmable thermostat to set the temperature back even further when no one’s at home. Pay special attention to the humidity levels in your home as well; it will help you feel more comfortable.

A common sign that your air is too dry is when you have a lot of static electricity in your home or when your nose, throat or skin feel dry and scratchy. Plus, if you suffer from allergies or asthma, dry air can aggravate your symptoms and even cause nosebleeds. Are You a Tilter or a Lifter?

Confucius Chinese Restaurant was opened in the spring of 2004 in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

Shawn Xiong, the owner, had previously owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmington prior to relocating to the beach area. Since then, Confucius has been named the best Chinese restaurant in the Delaware Today Magazine, Sussex County Woman and favorably mentioned in various newspaper and magazines. herever you go, you probably will find a Chinese eatery in every shopping center that offers pretty much the same items such as lo miens and chow miens.

The Confucius menu is more focused on items you don t usually find in those places. The name Confucius lets people know it is Chinese, but with a delicate, refined gourmet restaurant and not a fried rice and egg rolls fast food eatery like a McDonalds.

There are different popular dishes for different customers depending on their individual personal taste. If you like spicy food, we offer dishes such as Hot Pepper Chicken, Cumin Beef or Kung Pao Shrimp. f you like fish, almon and lack ean auce, Steam Halibut or Crispy Whole Black Sea Bass

are all excellent choices. f you are a first time customer, they encourage you to tell your server what you do or do not like, and they will offer the right recommendation for you.

Confucius believes that every customer deserves special attention, if you order something that you don’t like, they encourage you to send it back and try again AT NO COST. They want customers to have a pleasant dining experience.

15 of us were in Rehoboth Beach over the past weekend. We had decided to try Confucius based upon friends recommendations and Yelp reviews. They were very accommodating with the reservation and by providing a nice space, including a high chair. We started with assorted appetizers, including spring rolls, various dumplings, beef sticks and the like. Everything was delicious. So on to the main courses. Eggplant in black bean sauce, Singapore Rice Noodles, Hunan Beef, Chicken with Broccoli, 5 Spice Duck (they will warn you it is very hot-we asked for it to be on the mild side, and still had some heat, but we loved it!) Shrimp and scallops with walnuts (my favorite dish of the night), soft shell crab, chicken fries rice and a few other dishes that never made their way to my end of the table. Portions are large, but the food was so delicious we had very little left over. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant - everything is prepared to order, and they deserve all 5 stars.

First time here, and it won’t be our last. Loved the seafood hot and sour soup; chicken hot and sour was excellent as well. Spicy shredded duck was under-spiced, but that was my fault for telling server I did not want it too hot, and she bent over backwards to make sure it was mild.

Can’t wait to try other menu items. Our server was outstanding. Could not have been more attentive and accommodating. Co-owner Danielle was a pleasure to talk with as well. This is not your typical fast-food Chinese restaurant, so be prepared to pay up for quality.

“Shasta Shutterbug” Has Arrived!

BY: MIKE BAKER I always like to do things with my photography just a little different or something more my way. My “Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece, Ashley, had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar style vehicle. I initially spotted this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the idea of buying it. After I had seen some ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta.” I was sure it was already sold. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many “camper photo booths” out there. I never realized how big photo booths are becoming. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and started noticing the appeal. figured photo booths would be more of a short term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular.

So this was my winter project! So ideas started rolling through my mind. I had my daughter, Courtney, listen to my ideas. Not good. Seems like she had better ideas then I did. Most 21 year olds know more about what attracts the younger crowds. She’s the designer, I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did.

She was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. One never knows what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some walls and oors from 4 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood oor. t is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside, a photo booth and seating. Sorry no room for rest rooms.

After Courtney placed it on Facebook, it was booked instantly the next day for 2 bookings. It was an instant hit at the 2016 Heart Ball in Dover. We also made a 2 day appearance at the Dover International Speedway on the recent race weekend. We have gotten many bookings already for weddings, gala events and other outdoor events. We also have the standard photo booth, but I think this one has gotten much attention. fter all, this is the first one in the First State!

Bypassing the Corporate Ladder By: Luke Kennedy I was lucky enough to grow up in a well educated, af uent family that had the ability to afford me every opportunity parents could want for their child. I went to a prestigious private school, participated in sports, and e tracurricular activates. had great friends and managed to stick to the principles my parents had brought me up to believe in such as hard work, honesty, ntegrity, and self sufficiency, effectively keeping me out of harm s way and trouble. hen it was time to go to college, was glad to go. had been accepted to a pres tigious school n oston that was e cited about, and felt that it was time to stand on my own two feet and start carving my own way in the world. ollege accomplished for me what any re alistic e pectations could hope for the ability to think analytically and e press myself ap propriately. However, the reason chose my school, and the reason most people know went to college, was not for these rather hum ble aspirations. was career focused and want ed college to be my ticket into an amusement park of opportunity. hat found was my ana lytical mind saying, ou ve got a 12 , education. hat now, hot shot

lthough had a good e perience at col lege, wasn t an academic at heart and knew that spending another 1 , for post grad was not for me unless absolutely necessary. f course it was time to get a job, but where started contacting all the advertising companies had been studying over the past four years and managed to land a handful of interviews. t became uite clear that nobody was hiring, and that the whole industry was slow enough to grant interviews as a way of distracting themselves from the fact that they didn t have enough work to do either. The of fers did get would have given education in vestment a return in about years as long as didn t need to pay rent or eat. e all have to start somewhere, but refused to believe that my value to the professional world was within . of minimum wage. ometimes it s not what you know, but who you know, and that was certainly true with me. My mom had worked for a guy named ob who had started a woman s fo cused educational newspaper out of Las e gas 31 years ago, and he was trying to get one started in oston. My mom told him my position and soon enough was meeting the President of The ounty oman ewspapers.

He has trained over 3 women across the country to publish the format he invented and told me that fear was the only thing to stop me from doing it, too. ob has been in educational publishing since 1 . The more found out about it, the more confident became. ot a single paper using his format, formula, con

cepts, marketing and sales techni ues, trade secrets and business plan of the usse oun ty omen s ournal ever went out of business and more to the point, my first year gross was , plus. complained that didn t have any background in publishing and he told me that he had never trained anybody with a pub lishing background. o with a little help from my family got the money together for the ini tial down payment and soon was getting all the real world training needed to run my own newspaper.

Training took about a week and is contin ual, you never feel vulnerable. ith several other first time entrepreneurs, learned ev erything that can be taught about the ounty oman s ewspaper. y the end of the week knew how to operate a women s newspa per, sell advertising, and manage distribu tion. t was all very fast, scary, and e citing, and before knew it, was scheduled to print my first sample run of newspapers back in oston. followed my training, called local contributors, and scheduled appointments to meet with professionals in industries proven to have strong track records with our format. y the time the first issue was printed, had 24, in advertising sales. ithin the first 2 years had taken about 1 weeks of vacation and grossed over 1 . . now run two pa pers and estimate their total sale value around 4 . . hen do sell these papers can go wherever want to go and do it all over again. ometimes daydream about what my ne t job interview will be like (if ever want

one), and ve decided it will probably be sig nificantly different than my last one. f m go ing to ever get on the corporate ladder, there s no way m starting on the bottom. n fact, ve virtually created my own ladder.

There are a lot of perks doing what do, but it s certainly not all fun and games. lot of it is real work. till, any job worth having is hard work, and more to the point, most jobs not worth having are hard work, too. t least like what do, and feel confident in calling myself a success only 2 years out of college. was lucky to know ob. There s no way around it. ut most people who can relate to where was 2 years ago don t know ob. like to think that merica can still be about what you know rather than who you know, which is why m writing this article. m a testament to the fact that everyone just needs the right break, so hopefully anybody reading this now knows of one.
