Health & Medicine The Future of Cosmetic Surgery Aging is a normal process of time which we all experience. 1. Thinning of the skin, fine lines, enlarged pores, and pigment changes to the skin. 2. Loss of volume in the upper face, underneath the eyes, lips, cheeks, temporal area (empty upper face). 3. Grooves due to bulges and depression around the eyes, mouth, chin and dropping of the eyebrows and corners of the lips. 4. Hanging and bulging of the neck and jowls.

For years, extensive and expensive treatments and procedures were used to improve the above. In today’s modern and technically advanced cosmetic world improvement can be achieved with: 1. Very small to no incisions 2. Long lasting results 3. High satisfaction rate with minimal cost

How can this be accomplished 1. Fillers which are extremely safe and last for years 2. Tightening of the skin and reshaping of the tissues 3. Resurfacing the skin to improve texture, pores, fine wrinkles and pigmentation. These procedures are performed under local anesthesia and minimal sedation to improve comfort and can be performed in about two hours. Dr. Malek has performed this procedure on hundreds of patients who are very happy with the results. To the left are some before and afters of a few of our patients. Please visit our website to view our complete photo gallery. Dr. Malek is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with over 30 years of experience taking care of patients throughout the state of Delaware. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and a member of The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (an elite society for plastic surgeons whom mainly perform Cosmetic Surgery as opposed to reconstructive surgery). Have An Overactive Bladder & Medication Didn’t Help? Don’t Give Up An Implant that sends the right electrical impulses to the nerves

Y

ou might have heard about medications and other therapies for improving urge incontinence and overactive bladder, which causes a frequent, urgent urge to pass urine that sometimes results in leaking.

track record, providing relief in more than 70 percent of cases for women who have not achieved the results they want after trying medications, physical therapy, behavior modification and other strategies.

But many women still are not aware of a highly successful, simple therapy called sacral neuromodulation which treats urge incontinence and overactive bladder by helping the nerves in the bladder to function properly.

No more uncomfortable pads, no more staking out the nearest restroom, no more staying home because you never know when the urge to go will come. No wonder so many patients say they wish they had learned about the implant years ago.

Here’s how it works. To control the nerves of the bladder, a small device called InterStim® is inserted, through the skin, near the tailbone, also known as the sacrum. It works by sending the right nerve impulses to the nerves of the bladder, which decreases the urge to urinate. Since approval by the FDA in 1998, it has demonstrated a good

neurostimulator near the hip. For a lengthier test period it is common to do the procedure in an operating room under sedation.

held programmer that the patient can use to turn the device on and off, as well as increase or decrease the impulses.

Most patients return to their jobs and other routines the next day. During the trial, patients must be careful when they are bathing to avoid getting the device wet. They should not do any heavy lifting.

The implant is permanent. The battery that powers it has a life span of five to seven years. Patients can check their hand-held device to check if the battery is getting low, or they will notice a return of symptoms. Battery replacement is a procedure that takes about ten minutes to perform.

During the evaluation phase, patients keep a diary of their urination and leakage to gauge if the device is helping. Most patients say the impact is almost immediate, often within 24 hours.

Take it for a trial run

This device is unique in that patients can try it out to determine if it’s a good fit for them. The evaluation phase can be as short as four days or as long as two weeks.

If patients’ symptoms are greatly improved or cured during the evaluation, they can go on to longterm use of InterStim® therapy, in which the device is implanted.

For a brief trial run, the patient typically comes to the office and the doctor places an external

Invisalign Offers The Modern Miracle Of Invisible Braces Presented by Richard J. McCann, D.M.D., P.A.

I

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who is troubled by having a less-than-perfect smile, Invisalign is for you. This is quickly become the number one method for teeth straightening, and it can boast lots of happy people who are no longer afraid to show the world their smiles. Let’s take a look at what it is and how it works to get you the smile you’ve always wanted. What’s Invisalign and How Does It Work? nvisalign is a whole system designed to fi your teeth and your teeth only. t is a series of trays that are designed to straighten your teeth little by little. These trays are called “aligners” and they are changed every two weeks. The entire process takes about a year, but it depends on how much straightening needs to be done. y using sophisticated computer imaging, dentists can construct the perfect aligner system for your teeth and guarantee the results you re looking for. f you ve ever worn metal braces, you know that it re uires dentist visits every weeks where they tighten the metal in a painful way. nvisalign is much easier. Why Is Invisalign So Much Better Than Metal Braces? The main benefit of nvisalign is that the braces are invisible. ne of the reasons lots of people hesitate before fi ing their teeth is that it causes social embarrassment to have a mouth full of metal. orrecting your teeth is something most people do when they re kids or adolescents, so you don t want to show the world. This treatment is nearly invisible; you d have to be pretty close to see that somebody s wearing them! nother reason this treatment is so popular is the pain factor. Traditional braces hurt when the dentist

adjusts them. hen you go every two weeks to get your aligners straightened, there is no pain at all. t s just a matter of your dentist taking out the old trays and putting in the new. ou won t even cringe nd of course, everybody loves the treatment because it works to get the results you want. The computer imaging can show you e actly how your smile will look when the whole thing s done.

Let’s Get The Ball Rolling! tart by talking to Dr. Mc ann. He ll decide if you re an ideal candidate or not (most folks are ). He is specially trained to provide this service to his patients. By: Glenn Courtney, A.B.O.C. Delaware Eye Optical With sunglass season upon us, eyeglass wearers have more options than ever before when choosing sunglasses for protection and visual comfort. Over the years, we have had many request for prescription sunglasses as well as contact lens wearers choosing plano (non-prescription) sunglasses to wear over their contacts. Our inventory of sunglasses re ects those re uests ranging from sport lines sunch as Kaneon, Maui Jim, costa Del Mar, and Oakley to fashion lines such as Tiffany, Tom Ford, Kate Spade, Barton Perreira, Porscha, Ray Ban and many others inventoried in most of our locations. For the most part the fashion lines carry a prescription digital polarized lens without any need for compensation due to curve. Sport active and even some high fashion lines require compensation for the prescription to enable wearer’s easy transition from everyday eyewear to the larger high base curve found today in many sunglass lines. Those large lenses with higher base curve or steeper

Having been in the industry for over 35 years, I have witnessed the evolution of lens designs to enable better vision, protection, and ease of wear in the sunglass lenses. The digital revolution has been a key to enabling these compensation factors, broadening the availability in many frames and prescriptions, as well as treatments and materials. The fitting of sunglasses still re uires prescription analysis to steer the patient to the frame more suitable to their prescription, but the choices have increased dramatically over the past five years. Currently Delaware Eye Optical is fitting many sunglasses with very few rejections or non-adapt to changing from every day to higher base curve sunglasses. These personalized progressive or single vision lenses designed for wrap frames comes in many materials, can be treated with polarization, tinted, backside anti-glare (keeps re ection off the back side of the lens), Transition lenses, many treatments are available. These personalized designs take in to account the lenses fitting closer to the face and extreme panoramic angle most sunglasses have when wrapped. These lenses allow a wider field of vision with less peripheral distortion and fewer errors across the lens due to high

to wear larger frames than were available in the past. Back surface free form lenses adding the aspheric design provides the highest level of optical resolution available in the large wrap around frames. e have been fitting theses lenses very successfully and are pleased with the reaction and outcomes many of our clients have experienced. As worn technology measurements are taken in fitting eyewear and we have implemented this procedure. N-Form measuring system takes in to account vertex distance,

wells as pupillary distance. Those measurements are then fed into a computer which designs the ultimate customized prescription for the wearer. It is an exciting time in the eyewear design both from available lens choices as well as frame selection. If you ride a bike, play golf or just go to the beach we can help design a lens for you and select a frame the best suits your personalized needs. With the largest selection of prescription frames and sunglasses frames in the region your choices are unlimited.

He completed his post-graduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia with a residency in internal medicine (1991-1994), Chief Medical Resident (1994-1995), and cardiology fellowship (1995-1998). Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July 1998. He has served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. There are a number of popular beliefs out there about your cardiovascular health that might be misleading and dangerous when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Here are some of the most common ones: 1. “Heart disease runs in my family, so it’s only a matter of time until I get it too” No question there is a strong genetic component to heart disease, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. On the contrary, a strong and consistent set of measures should be taken early to dramatically reduce your risk: stay active, don’t smoke, strict cholesterol control, treat diabetes and hypertension, reduce salt intake, change and stay on a healthy diet. 2. Chest pain is a sure sign of a heart attack”. Not quite. Chest pain remains the most common symptom of a heart attack, but there are many others just as important that can be subtle: Shortness of breath,

8 I Spring 2017

Ten Common Myths about Cardiovascular Disease

dizziness, nausea, pain or discomfort in the arms, shoulders, jaw, mid upper back, or palpitations. It’s important to recognize any so these symptoms and to call 911 immediately. 3. “ I can get to the hospital just as fast ( or faster) than the ambulance can” Wrong and very dangerous for many reasons: The emergency medical system staff will initiate the right treatment and activate the hospital system ahead of your arrival in the hospital. You will get into the emergency department much faster. Don’t be a fool, call 911 and let them help you instead. People have had cardiac arrest while driving and have become unconscious, causing fatal accidents. 4. “ I am too young to worry about heart disease”. An early adoption of a healthy life style will have a tremendous impact in the prevention of cardiovascular disease later on. The heart attack someone might have in their 40’s or 50’s began as a process of plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries and others in childhood and adolescent years. So, educating your children for life long healthy living is perhaps the most important legacy.

8. “ I stopped my medicines because my blood pressure was normal, or my cholesterol was normal or I feel good now”. Very often people assume that once your blood pressure and cholesterol reach the recommended levels, then the job is done and the medications are no longer needed. The reality is these are chronic problems and need maintenance and continued treatment. Please consult with your doctor before stoping any medication on your own. eeling better is fine, but it might be because you have been on that treatment in the first place. f you are having trouble affording medications, talk to your doctor to be switched to a less expensive alternative or they may have certain discount programs available to you. 9. “Aspirin is a good blood thinner to prevent strokes if you have atrial fi rillation . This is a common one. The truth is that if you have this heart rhythm problem you are at a much higher risk for a stroke and you need to be on a true blood thinner, such as warfarin or one of the newer

agents now available on the market. Aspirin alone is not an effective treatment in this situation. 10. “Drinking a glass of wine a day reduces your risk of heart disease.” The question is -- how big is your glass of wine? The recommended amount of daily consumption of wine is 5 ounces for women and men over the age of 65. For men under age 65 they can have 2 glasses of 5 ounce each. The standard wine glasses hold between 12-14 ounces of wine, so it is very easy to consume more than intended. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which has been studied in animals to potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, but recent research has discredited some of this claim. The same antioxidant can be obtained from eating grapes and drinking grape juice, so wine consumption is not necessary for this potential benefit. Just some food for thought. Maybe over a glass of red wine, or maybe not.

5. “Diabetes won’t affect my heart so long as I take my medicines”. It’s critically important to keep a very strict control of diabetes and sugar levels to reduce the risk of a heart attack and stroke. However, you still remain at high risk for those events. Weight loss, regular exercise, smoking cessation, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol become even more important if you are also diabetic. 6. “ I will know when my blood pressure is high because I will have a headache” High blood pressure continues to be a “silent killer” and most people will have no symptoms, until it’s late and other organ systems are involved. Early detection and effective treatment of high blood pressure are absolutely critical in preventing stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney failure. Check your blood pressure regularly and discuss it with your health care provider. 7. “ Cholesterol checks are for older people”. Not exactly. The American Heart Association recommends an initial cholesterol check at age 20. Early detection and intervention are very important. If you have a very strong family history for heart disease, checking before age 20 is a good idea as well. Again a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstone of treatment.

What is Ultherapy? is a face and neck treatment that improves skin laxity in a meaningful way but completelynon–surgically.

Jowls

Michelle Parsons, MD is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. Here at ReNove Medical, Dr. Parsons offers Ultherapy, a state of the art medical procedure utilizing focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten sagging skin. No scalpel or anesthesia is needed. Ultherapy is great for people who would like tightening and lifting of facial skin without have a surigcal facelift. The Ulthera sound energy passes right through the skin and targets the areas you want lifted. During a typical 30-60 minute Ultherapy treatment session, an ultrasound applicator is passed over each region of the face. The sound waves emitted deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue. The beauty of Ultherapy ‘uplifting ultrasound’ is that it

Ultherapy works great for sagging jowls, where the skin is fatty, heavy and drooping. Ultherapy is able to reduce this fatty heaviness, tapering the jaw line, for a more youthful look. Ultherapy can restore a more youthful shape to the face from a square to the inverted triangle.

Nasolabial Folds Ultherapy also works well to minimize the drooping of excess skin that we get along each side of the nose, or lower cheeks. ou may think that you need to fill in these areas with a filler, but the real problem may be that fat and loose skin is just falling down due to the effects of gravity. With ultherapy we can target this area and minimize the fattiness and tighten up that skin. Again this will restore the more youthful balance of the face with the center of gravity higher in the cheek areas.

Neck Ultherapy can tighten up that loose skin underneath our necks as well. The area that Ultherapy works the best is that area just underneath the chin and extending into that curve of the neck. Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a surgical neck lift. But if you have somewhat loose and fatty skin in your upper neck, hanging just beneath your chin, Ultherapy can improve this area, and improve your profile.

Perhaps one the most dramatic areas that Ultherapy can improve on without surgery is the eye area and creating a brow lift, helping to lift heavy drooping eyelids. Ultherapy can make the eyes appear more open,

more awake, rested and more youthful. This may be subtle change but this small difference can have a significant effect! Our clients really love this part of the Ultherapy results.

Before

Overall Ultherapy works wonders to taper, redefine your facial contours, while eliminating fatty, droopy areas, and lift and tightening skin around the eyes and underneath the chin, for a more youthful sculpted look. The stars in Hollywood do this treatment, and now you have access to this age defying procedure right here in Delaware at the beach. Dr. Parsons is pleased to bring this cutting edge highly sought after technology to you to help you look your best. If you think you may be candidate for Ultherapy, please give us a call to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Michelle Parsons. 302227-1079.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Ultherapy? After just one treatment with no downtime, your skin will gradually shift back into a more youthful position. Improvements include a sleeker, more defined jawline and tighter skin on the neck under the chin. Sagging skin on the cheeks can be tightened and lifted, which in turn can

After

improve folds from the nose to mouth, folds from the mouth to jaw, and drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look in general. The results of Ultherapy are permanent, just as the results of a face-lift are permanent, 0f course, your skin will continue its natural aging process. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery but looking for meaningful results.

TESTIMONIAL One week after my Ultherapy Treatment, my husband, after being out of town for a couple of days asked me “what’s different about you,” he was staring at my face! Not having told him about my treatment I innocently said “what do you mean?” His response was “I am not sure but your face looks different.” I asked “different good or different bad?” He replied “different good, looks stretched.” I was surprised that the results were noticed that quickly. I found the treatment to be bearable, certainly wasn’t pain free, but tolerable. I was very happy when it was over! For the past 2 weeks following the treatment my face has been tender which is a reminder that the treatment is continuing to work! I would highly recommend it to all! K.M. – Ocean City, MD.

10 years of 3T quality MRI! About Dr. Chao Dr. Philip Chao graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University and was Scholar of the House. He continued his studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, receiving his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (1984- 1987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology ( 7). Dr. Chao has been interested in M technology since its very beginning the first M scan took place in while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (19881990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in M on the first Signa .5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and speciali ations complete Dr. Chao left the niversity of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of M in ilmington D a position he held for 4 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI Center in Delaware which uses the very latest technology: 3T-MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest hori on for M . By: Dr. Philip Chao 3T MRI is MRI done at 3 Tesla. The wikipedia entry in radiology doesn’t even begin to cover the benefits of 3T MRI so I thought it would be useful to devote an entire article to the subject. Experimental MRI scanners are now being tested at 7 Tesla and 10 Tesla. 7T is very useful for MS imaging. For most people, 3T MRI is the best available. 3T MRI is more clear and more detailed than MRI done at lower field strengths and up to 4 times faster. We have been offering 3T MRI since 2007. Experience matters. Unfortunately many patients—and even doctors—do not understand the importance of quality when considering having an MRI. They seem to feel all are created equal but, in fact, they are not. Doctors and their staff are frequently too busy to take the time to understand the technology they are prescribing. “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” By Cindy Nigro Ph.D.

I

nsomnia is becoming an epidemic in our society. As with everything, there are pluses and minuses to the advancements we’ve made; for instance, electric light. It’s wonderful that we’re no longer dependent on the sun as our sole source of light. We can have light anytime, anywhere we want it! On the ip side of this, e no feel compelled to work more (because we can), in a 24 hour society. So, in addition the stress this adds, we’re also now subjected to more blue light during times that nature did not intend. Blue light suppresses the hormone, melatonin, which is necessary to induce sleep. And so it goes! Unfortunately, the world we presently live in does not lend itself well to our getting a good night’s sleep. But, it is the world we have, and for the most part, enjoy! So, given our situation, what are we to do? A sleeping pill may be effective at addressing your sleep problems in the short-term, however, often times, they can lead to a number of side effects such as daytime drowsiness and next day impairment. If you’re thinking sleeping pills, you may be headed in the wrong direction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, or CBT-I, is a drug free treatment, and is no the first treatment of choice. The inability to sleep well, not related to physical issues, or serious psychological disorders, is what’s called Primary Insomnia. CBT-I addresses the cognitions and behaviors that might stand in the way of your getting to sleep, staying asleep, or both. It is a wellresearched, standardized treatment program ith a specific protocol that must be followed. It’s not easy, but the payoff is that you could have vast improvement in as little as six to eight weeks!

The County Woman’s Journal

What is required is that you begin by keeping a “Sleep Diary” to evaluate your sleep habits. It would include such things as the time you go to bed, time you to go to sleep, number of awakenings, etc.

to occur. If there is a problem at any junction, insomnia occurs. Everyone has their own individual genetic preprogramming, and their own experiences and psyche that also play a role.

After your particular issues have been identified, detailed instructions about “Sleep Hygiene” would be discussed, and you would need to follow through with necessary changes. For some individuals, this solves the problem, although that is not common.

If you are experiencing insomnia, Delaware Sleep Disorders Centers has a team of professionals that provide a variety of diagnostic and treatment tools to evaluate and correct a number of sleep disorders. CBT-I is one of the many solutions we offer.

The next step involves what is called “Stimulus Control”. Going to bed and getting out of bed at certain times are examples of this. The more time you spend awake in bed, the more you associate your bed with wakefulness, and not sleep.

About the author: Cynthia Nigro, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist is now working at Delaware Sleep Disorder Centers after many years of being in private practice. She originally trained at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, but after becoming fascinated

by the connection between the mind and the body, she began extensive training in all modalities of Biofeedback. Presently she combines these therapies to optimize treatment for those with sleep disorders. Delaware Sleep Disorder Centers, LLC, is staffed and equipped to evaluate and treat most sleep-related disorders. Diagnosis and treatment for many disorders may begin after just one night. When performing a sleep study, our technologists work closely with our medical director – (a physician who is board certified in Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine or Neurology) – to identify and confirm sleep disorders, measure their severity and recommend multiple treatment options.

If you’re still not sleeping, you then move to “Sleep Restriction”. This is the most difficult step and best done on a weekend or some other time you can tolerate a few days of being fatigued or experience daytime drowsiness. This involves limiting the amount of time you are allowed to sleep. The good news is that it doesn’t take many nights of this for it to work! During all these steps, negative cognitions associated with sleep and other stressors are discussed and reassessed. Obsessing about problems when you’re supposed to be sleeping will only make them worse. While healthy sleep is important, not everyone needs eight hours, and even if you do, a few bad nights are not a disaster. Finally, there are many different relaxation techniques that are useful not just for sleep, but for other stressful life situations. Everyone should be aware of one that works for them. Knowing how to calm yourself has been proven to be of benefit for overall good health. While sleep may seem passive, your body is very active during sleep, and legions of bodily processes are taking place that need to work in sync for sleep

Nanticoke Offers Lung Cancer Screening: Reducing Lung Cancer Mortality by 20% As you may already know, lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. And while there are several causes of lung cancer, smoking is at the top of the list. For many, lung cancer develops without symptoms. If a person is experiencing symptoms, the cancer is much more likely to have already spread to other parts of the body, making it more difficult to treat. The good news…like with many cancers, if diagnosed early the chances of surviving lung cancer increase significantly. study funded by the National Cancer Institute of patients using the low dose T scan to detect lung cancer found a 20 percent reduction in the death rate due to this disease, because the cancer was found earlier.

14 I Spring 2017

Nanticoke Health Services now offers this low dose omputeri ed Tomography ( T) screening. This screening is used on people that have a high-risk for lung cancer before symptoms appear. (This screening is used to detect lung cancer in high risk people before symptoms appear.) How the Screening Works: The low dose T scan takes multiple, cross-sectional images of the lungs, providing detailed views that can reveal nodules too small to show up on a traditional ray. t actually detect(s) abnormalities the size of a grain of rice. This is important because the larger the tumor, the higher the chance the cancer has spread. The scan takes less the (than) si ty seconds and keeps the (delete this word) e posure to radiation at a minimum. There are no injections and nothing to swallow.

This screening is covered by most insurance providers if you meet the criteria: re between the ages of 55-80; Medicare patients, between the ages of 55-77. re a current smoker or you have quit within the past fifteen years. • Have smoked an equivalent of 3 pack years. This means you have smoked about 1 pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for fifteen years. Have not had a chest T scan in the last year. • Do not have any signs or symptoms of lung cancer. It is important you have a conversation with your health care provider before scheduling the screening. Some insurance providers, including Medicare, require a separate shared decision making visit to discuss the risks, benefits and other health care information surrounding this

screening. This visit is re uired by Medicare for the costs of this screening to be covered by insurance. If you do not have insurance you may qualify for other financial assistance from Delaware’s Screenings for Life program. Your healthcare provider must schedule the screening. Nanticoke Health Services is here to provide for the health of our community. It is our mission to provide you with the best care possible and (delete ) with the necessary information to make healthcare decisions that are right for you. You can learn more about the lung cancer screening with a low dose T by calling your health care provider to schedule a shared-decision making appointment.

Myths About Lung Cancer: feel fine. don t need to be tested.” A low-dose CT lung screening is a test specifically designed for those without any symptoms. People with lung cancer do not typically have symptoms until the cancer has spread. If you have a high risk for lung cancer, getting tested before you have symptoms may save your life.

“I quit smoking years ago so I don’t have to worry about lung cancer.” While quitting smoking is one of the most important things you have done for your health, your risk for lung cancer is still higher than someone who has never smoked. If you have quit in the past 15 years, you may still be a candidate for the lung cancer screening. Talk with your provider.

“I don’t want to get screened because I don’t want extra radiation exposure.” This is good to discuss with your provider. For those at high risk for lung cancer, the benefits of the low dose T scan may out weight the small risks that come from the low levels of radiation exposure. “I’ve heard that things that aren’t cancer show up on the test. Does that mean I shouldn’t trust the

test?” Many adults have spots on their lungs that are not cancer. There are guidelines to help doctors determine if a spot is more likely to be cancer. Doctors ready (reading?) the results are radiologists trained in these guidelines. Source of Myths About Lung Cancer: www.lungcanceralliance.com

In order to schedule a low-dose lung cancer screening, talk with your healthcare provider. During a dedicated shared, decision making visit your provider will review the benefits and risks. Most insurances including Medicare require this shared decision making visit in order to cover the costs of the screening. Health & Medicine Dr. Andrea Goldstein

Dr. oldstein is a board certified s ecialist in gastroenterology he atology ho recei ed her edical degree from Georgetown University. She enjoys being on the leading edge of new treatments for diseases that in the past had no cure. Dr. Goldstein is one of the physicians who perform the CRH O’Regan System at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates, for internal hemorrhoids. In most cases if the CRH O’Regan system is deemed appropriate, it can be performed at your initial consultation. Dr. Goldstein is an involved mother, helping her children with piano lessons and volunteering with Girl Scouts. She was trained in opera and sings in the community choir. She is also active with her synagogue, including delivering food to a local shelter through the Jewish Relief Agency. “As a doctor, I strive to give my patients the best possible medical care they can receive, in an environment where they can feel comfortable. This starts with talking and listening closely to ensure that I get a complete picture of the patient’s medical history and symptoms, and also that my patient understands what she needs to know to follow her treatment plan and return for the follow-up testing she needs to protect her health. Giving my time, compassion and full attention is as important as any test or procedure I perform.”

HEMORRHOIDAL TREATMENT Over half the population will experience some type of hemorrhoidal problem in their lifetime. You may be suffering in silence because you are too embarrassed to discuss the problem, or worry that the cure will be more painful than the problem itself. Now, advances in medicine have made hemorrhoid treatment fast and virtually painless. our only challenge is finding a doctor who offers the right treatment and makes you feel comfortable receiving it. How do hemorrhoids develop? Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and engorged veins in the anal and rectal region. They are most commonly caused by changes in frequency of bowel movements, pressure of straining and hormonal changes or pressure during pregnancy. The veins swell and stretch and gradually lose the support of surrounding connective tissue. Hemorrhoids can cause the following symptoms: Itching/Burning Bleeding Protrusion during Bowel Movements Pain Hygiene Concerns Are all hemorrhoids the same? Hemorrhoids are actually classified into four stages based upon severity. This helps determine which treatment is most appropriate for you. 1) Stage I: The hemorrhoids remain inside at all times. They do not protrude from the anus. 2) Stage II: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but reduce spontaneously. 3) Stage III: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but require manual insertion. 4) Stage IV: Fourth degree hemorrhoids: The most severe hemorrhoids always protrude and cannot be pushed back inside. What are the treatment options for removing hemorrhoids? Effective hemorrhoid treatment depends on your specific medical condition. o doctor should recommend a solution without first doing an e am

to rule out other potential causes of rectal pain or bleeding. Once you have been diagnosed with hemorrhoids, you will have different options to choose from, depending on the severity of your case. You may get ade uate relief from increasing fiber in your diet, taking warm sitz baths and using topical creams. Treatment options include a variety of minimally invasive procedures that cut off blood ow to the hemorrhoid and cause it to shrink. In some cases your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remove e cess tissue. What is the most painless method for treatment? An even less invasive and pain-free solution has recently been approved for internal hemorrhoids. This new banding option, the CRH O’Regan System ™ is considered the “gold standard” in treatment and almost eliminates the discomfort and recovery time associated with other hemorrhoid removal options. During the 60 SECOND procedure, the physician uses a gentle suction device to place a small rubber band around the tissue, just above the hemorrhoid. There are very few nerve endings in this area to cause any pain. The hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within a day or two. Research has shown that 99.8% of patients treated with the CRH O’Regan System ™ have no post-procedure pain and require no pain medication before, during, or after the procedure. There is no bowel prep, and you can drive yourself home afterwards. nother advantage, e ternal hemorrhoids may also improve with this option. Make an appointment with a specialist If you or a family member is ready to get permanent relief from hemorrhoids, you should make an appointment with a digest specialist for an accurate diagnosis and the

most appropriate treatments available. Only doctors who have been specially trained by CRH O’Regan System ™ trainers/doctors are licensed to provide this state-of-the-art banding treatment. Locally, it is performed at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates (HGA).

CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Fat Removal fat. This non-invasive procedure represents an alternative to surgical liposuction by using a novel cooling technology that permanently removes fat cells from treated areas.

The biggest trend in cosmetic surgery for 2013 is the expansion of non-invasive body countouring technology, the best of which is CoolSculpting, which is now available at ReNove Medical in Rehoboth Beach. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat. Arms and legs can be treated as well. Unlike some other non-surgical technologies that release fat from fat cells, such as Vasershape and I-Lipo, Coolsculpting destroys the fat cells thereby eliminating treated fat permanently, as our body does not make new fat cells. Coolsculpting is a unique non-surgical treatment for removal of fat from localized pockets of excess

How does CoolSculpting Work? The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas. What are the most common areas to be treated? Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. These are the areas that CoolSculpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can be treated and eliminated

by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the muffin top, waist, brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.

Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting? The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible Before to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. It is common to have numbness or decreased sensitivity in the treated area lasting 1 to 2 weeks. In some instances patients will develop a burning tingling sensation 5 days after the treatment which can be controlled with a Lidoderm patch. There are virtually no long term negative side effects. What does CoolSculpting feel like? Our treatment room is very comfortable where you will relax on a padded recliner. When the CoolSculpting is applied to the fatty area to be treated there is a sensation of pulling that feels slightly uncomfortable for the first 5 to 10 minutes. Gradually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. There seems to be a natural endorphin release during the treatment so patients are very relaxed during the treatment, which takes an hour. Some people have fallen asleep during the treatment! A typical treatment session lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how many areas are treated. During the treatment, we have Netflix available so you can watch a movie or catch

After up on your favorite television program. Busy moms find this time to themselves a real treat! We also have Wi-Fi.

How quickly do people see results? After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells are actually killed and will be eliminated by the body over time. Many report seeing changes in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. The full benefit will take as long as 60 to 90 days. How long to results last? Once the fat cells are frozen, killed and naturally eliminated by your body, the results are permanent. You can still gain weight in other areas if you over eat and don’t continue to try to remain fit. If you are interested in learning more about CoolSculpting and would like to see if you are a good candidate for this effective treatment to lose unwanted fatty areas, please call us today to set up an appointment to meet with Dr. Michelle Parsons at ReNove Medical, Health Rejuvenating Spa, in Rehoboth Beach, 302227-1079. The Weight is Over: To Sleeve or Not to Sleeve? Thomas P. Barnett, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Barnett graduated from Princeton University in 1983 and obtained his medical degree from George Washington University in 198 . He co leted his surgical training at ho as efferson niversity affiliate an enau Hos ital in hiladel hia in 199 . He served in the .S. ir orce at Dover ir orce Base D B fro 199 199 where he started the a arosco ic Minimally Invasive & Ambulatory Surgery programs. Dr. Barnett was Chief of Surgery at DAFB Hospital in 1995 and 1996. He has continued to practice surgery in Dover, Delaware ever since being honorably discharged and he founded his private practice, Surgical ssociates, . ., in 1999. Dr. Barnett is Board Certified in Surgery and is a ellow of the erican College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Medical Society of Delaware. Dr. Barnett has special interests in weight loss surgery. He currently serves as the medical director of bariatric surgery at BayhealthMilford Memorial Hospital and the Delaware Surgery Center in Dover.

Weight loss surgery has evolved over the last 30 years. Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (”Sleeve surgery”) or taking out a portion of the stomach (see diagram 1) has emerged as the most common weight loss procedure in America over the last couple of years. It is estimated that in 2017, 70-80% of the weight loss surgeries done in the US will be the sleeve gastrectomy. This surgery is done through a series of incisions, most of which are the diameter of a dime. The Sleeve surgery basically converts the stomach from football size to banana size. The decreased size of the stomach

causes a restriction feeling to the patient when they eat and therefore they will eat less. In addition, the surgery removes a part of the stomach that produces a hormone called ghrelin, which is secreted by the oxyntic cells of the fundus in response to fasting. Ghrelin stimulates appetite. The Sleeve decreases the amount of ghrelin produced and therefore patients are able to better control their hunger. Patients who have weight loss surgery have significant positive metabolic effects as well. Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea improve and therefore decrease obesity related morbidity and mortality. Many patients will be able to decrease or completely get off medications for high blood pressure and diabetes. Back and knee pain also improve with weight loss. In a recent study from the Netherlands on 1000 patients undergoing sleeve surgery, they found on average, an excess weight loss of . in the first postoperative

year, 84.2% after two years, and 84.5% after 3 years. Pre-existent comorbidities appear to improve or even resolve after sleeve surgery. Resolution of type 2 diabetes occurs in 60-96% of the patients. Dr. Sandra Costa is not only a family physician, but a sleeve surgery patient of Dr. Barnett’s herself. She has lost 108 pounds since starting her “sleeve journey.” She had her surgery in November 2015 at Milford Memorial Hospital. “I consider that day my rebirthday. I was born obese at almost 12 pounds and put on weight every year until my sleeve journey began. I feel much better and more energetic.” Francis Fooks, another patient of Dr. Barnett’s, has gone from 318 to 183 pounds 10 months after her Sleeve surgery. “I was able to get off all my medications and get rid of my sleep apnea machine. This surgery has given me my life back! Dr. Barnett, Nicole Fisher ,PA-C, the team at Surgical

Associates, and Milford Hospital have been extremely supportive throughout my weight loss journey.” There are risks with all weight loss surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to bleeding, infection, obstruction, leaks, and the need for reoperation. Death has occurred in rare cases. Fortunately, with the sleeve gastrectomy, safety profiles have been proven to be high with few serious complications. Sleeve surgery causes less nutritional deficiencies post operatively compared to the gastric bypass. Complications after Sleeve surgery in the literature vary from 2.9 to 9.5% which appear to be lower than the complication rate after gastric bypass, varying between 4.6 and 20.5% in the literature. Free Information Seminars are offered the 4th Tuesday evening of each month from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Eden Hill Medical Center in Dover. No registration is required. Questions? Many times we feel disconnected spiritually when in active addiction. Higher Power Yoga is intended to help a person develop an intentional practice of connecting the entire being, body, mind, and spirit with a Higher Power. According to Alana Martin, Hudson Health’s Peer Recovery Specialist, “One of the most important foundations you need in recovery is a Higher Power. Without a Higher Power in my life, I would feel completely overwhelmed, which could lead to a relapse. It’s one of the many tools I rely on every day to stay on the path of recovery.” With this in mind, we contracted with Heidi McNeeley, a registered Holy Yoga Instructor and Founder of The Worcester County Warriors Against Opiate Addiction, to provide yoga instruction at our treatment campus in Salisbury, Maryland. “Yoga helps to clear all the extraneous stuff,

The County Woman’s Journal

the ‘background noise’ that interferes with whatever we are trying to focus on” says McNeeley. “So when people are focusing on recovery, yoga helps to direct that focus. Yoga also helps physically, relieving the tight, stressed out muscles and teaching us to breathe, to let go.” According to Recovery.org, yoga can help people in recovery learn how to calm themselves without the use of alcohol or drugs, in addition to improving mental and physical health. ome of the benefits include • Relax and lower stress. Certain physiological changes that take place in the body help to lower heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol (the stress hormone) and adrenaline levels. • Control anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are common in recovery. Doing yoga on a regular basis helps to calm anxious thoughts and alleviate feelings of depression. • Help cope with trauma. Yoga has even been proven to have positive effects on individuals who have suffered some form of trauma, including PTSD. • Calm the mind. Often coupled with yoga, meditation and guided relaxation help to decrease racing thoughts, improve self-awareness, and promote a more restful sleep. • mprove fitness. If you thought you wouldn’t break a sweat doing yoga, you couldn’t be more wrong. Yoga helps to increase e ibility and

strength and is a work out for just about every muscle in your body. To learn more about the programs offered at Hudson Health Services please visit our website at www. Hudson-Health.org. If you would

10 Warning Signs Your Older Family Member May Need Help Dawn is a nurse with over years e erience in the edical field which includes M , and nursing e erience in hos ital, long term care, and senior living facilities. Dawn started in home care in 2012 and found joy in helping others live independently at home. She incorporated Caring Hearts Home Care, LLC in 2014 and was licensed by the state in 2015. She chose to write all her company’s policies and procedures herself to exceed federal and state regulations instead of buying a franchise because she felt that it gave her greater understanding of governing laws that are in place to protect clients and to have the freedom to run the company with regards to quality vs. quantity.

By Dawn Sbriglia, LPN, Director of Caring Hearts Home Care, LLC Changes in physical and cognitive abilities that may occur with age can be difficult to detect for older adults and their family members, friends, and caregivers. To help in determining when an older adult may need assistance in the home, here is a list of 10 warning signs. Any one of the following behaviors may indicate the need to take action. It is also important to inform the older adult’s physician of these changes. 1. Changing eating habits, resulting in weight loss, appetite loss, or missed meals 2. Neglecting personal hygiene, including clothing, body odor, oral health, nails, and skin 3. Neglecting the home, with a noticeable change in tidiness and/or sanitation 4. Exhibiting inappropriate behavior, such as being unusually loud, quiet, paranoid,

or agitated, or making phone calls at unusual hours 5. Changing relationship patterns, causing friends and neighbors to express concern 6. Showing physical injuries, such as burns, which may have resulted from general weakness, forgetfulness, or misuse of alcohol or medication 7. Decreasing or stopping participation in activities that were once enjoyable, such as a bridge or book club, dining with friends, or attending religious services 8. Exhibiting forgetfulness, resulting in unopened mail, newspaper piles, unfilled prescriptions, or missed appointments . Mishandling finances, such as not paying bills or paying them more than once and losing or hiding money 10. Making unusual purchases, such as more than one subscription to the same magazine, entering an unusually large number of contests, or increasing purchases from television advertisements

i-lipo (NON-SURGICAL FAT REDUCTION) Do you have a muffin top, love handles or stubborn areas that you cannot eliminate no matter how hard you diet or exercise? For this problem, Healthy Outcomes offers i-lipo, a laser alternative to liposuction. This is what we call “the miracle machine.” The i-lipo system emits low-level laser energy, which makes the fat cells open pores and release the fat which is then transported around the body where it will be burned off. You can treat any area from you neck to your calves in just 20 minutes.

No pain ~ No downtime ~ No surgery Cellulite reduction ~ Tighten skin ~ Reduce Fat INSTANT RESULTS

Healthy Outcomes now introducing genetic testing! What is genetic testing? Weight can be influenced by many genes. The way we eat, the way our body process food, metabolism, and our resulting health are all related to our genetics. Genetic testing helps identify best way to use dietary and exercise changes for successful weight loss. Healthy weight DNA testing is a comprehensive test aimed at assisting physicians in treating obese and overweight patients. It tests for a variety of genetic markers that have been found to influence diet, metabolism, eating behaviors, and exercise-related traits, as well as weight-related health conditions and medications. Genetic testing also provides an insight on how an individual’s diet may impact his or her risk for disease. This allows us to make a stronger impact on patient health by personalizing diet and exercise recommendations for better weight loss and overall health. Knowing specific genetic predisposition for weight gain/loss will also allow us reduce the risk of regaining weight after weight loss.

Chiropractic Tips For Avoiding Muscle Strain While Gardening Dr. Tracy Hudson

Dr. Sheila Burek

Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, here are some outdoorsrelated injury statistics to consider as you pull on your gardening gloves and lace up your boots: • In 2010, more than 35,500 people injured themselves using a stepladder • More than 41,000 Americans injured themselves while gardening or using gardening equipment • More than 127,000 people were injured while operating a lawn mower. Henlopen Chiropractic Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Sheila Burek to our practice. Dr. Burek is a Buffalo, NY native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.

the back or securing and stabilizing a ladder before climbing. These are simple precautions that are overlooked too often. Whether you’re maintaining a vegetable garden or adorning your yard with fragrant spring owers and bushes, using this e uipment can result in back and neck pain, as well as more serious muscular strains and tears if not used properly. The repetitive motion that your body undergoes when using such equipment can bring on a whole host of mechanical problems within the body. Utilize the following tips to help you enjoy a safe, productive day of summer landscaping: • Regardless of what piece of equipment you are using, make sure it has a strap—and that you use it. Place the strap over your head on the shoulder on the opposite side of your body from the device. This will help normalize your center of gravity. • Be sure to switch the side on which you are operating the equipment as often as possible, and to balance the muscles being used, alternate your stance and motion frequently. • Take frequent breaks. • Consider electric-powered items, especially if you experience back or neck pain, as they tend to be lighter than their engine-powered counterparts. • When picking up or putting down your equipment, be sure to bend from the knees, not at the waist. • Keep the object close to your body as you lift, not at arm’s length. While it is critical that you operate your yard equipment safely, it is equally important that you prepare your body for the work you are about to do. To help avoid injury, be sure to include a warm-up/cool-down period that involves stretching.

Before stretching, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Always warm up a muscle before stretching. Breathe in and out slowly throughout each stretching exercise until the muscle is stretched to its furthest point. At that point, hold your breath in. When you relax, breathe out. Stretch gently and smoothly. Do not bounce or jerk your body in any way and stretch as far as you can comfortably. You should not feel pain. Following are stretches recommended for getting the most out of the time you spend in the yard: 1. Stand up and prop your heel on a door step or stool with your knee slightly bent. Bend forward until you feel a slight pull at the back of the thigh, called the hamstring. You may need to stabilize yourself by holding onto a garage door handle. Hold the position for 20 seconds, then relax. Do it once more, then repeat with the other leg. 2. Stand up and put your right hand against a wall or other stable surface. Bend your left knee and grab your ankle with your left hand. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to stretch the quadricep muscle at the front of your thigh. Hold the position for 20 seconds, relax and do it again. Repeat with the other leg. 3. eave your fingers together above your head with your palms up. Lean to one side for 10 seconds to stretch the side of your upper body, then reverse. Repeat two or three times. 4. Hug yourself. Wrap your arms around yourself after letting your breath out and rotate to one side, as far as you can go. Hold it for 10 seconds. Then reverse. Repeat two or three times. Following these tips should provide you with successful and pain free gardening, but if it doesn’t, visit your local Doctor of Chiropractic for safe and effective treatment of your pain. Happy Spring!

TESTIMONIAL I tried chiropractic many years ago for vertigo and was so impressed with the immediate relief I received after only one visit. Now as an avid senior golfer, I see Dr.Tracy on a regular basis to keep me pain free. Her approach to chiropractic is both professional and personal and I would recommend her care to everyone. - Daisey H.

Ovarian Cancer...What All Women (and Those Who Love Them) Need to Know! Each year more than 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States, resulting in over 15,500 deaths. It is the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, affecting approximately 1 in 70 women. Because there is no reliable diagnostic screening, it often goes undetected or is misdiagnosed until it has advanced to the later stages. Less than 20% of cases are discovered in the early stage. Due to late diagnoses and a very high recurrence rate (70-90%), less than 50% of women make it to the 5 year milestone. Ovarian cancer does not discriminate and can affect females of any age and ethnic background. It continues to be one of the most underfunded cancers and the lack of public awareness and education is of critical concern. Although the symptoms of ovarian cancer often are not intense in the early stages, they are NOT silent. Once thought to be a ‘silent disease’, research indicates that 95% of women DO have vague but persistent symptoms. These symptoms are not always useful for diagnosis since they may be indicative of other less serious conditions. If any of the following single or combination of symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, consult your physician and insist that a manual exam and transvaginal ultrasound be performed. If any abnormalities are detected, a referral to a gynecologic oncologist may be in order. • Bloating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary symptoms (frequency or urgency)

Even if your ovaries have been removed, it is possible to develop Primary Peritoneal Cancer (PPC), a rare form of cancer, which is closely related to ovarian cancer. The peritoneum is a thin sheet of tissue that protects and supports the abdominal organs. When certain cells transform into cancerous cells, the result is PPC. The cause is not known. Symptoms are more gastrointestinal in nature and may include: · abdominal bloating · changes in bowel habits · an early feeling of fullness after eating Nausea and vomiting may occur when bloating is severe. Medical evaluation and treatment is the same as for ovarian cancer and recurrences are common. There is no screening for PPC.

Ann Funds, RN

fter surgery, severe injury or any lengthy hospitalization, most people hope to head back home and resume their busy lives. Sometimes, however, transitional rehabilitation care is needed to help recover and regain strength. Perhaps your doctor has already advised you that he or she may want you to receive physical, occupational, speech or vital stem therapies after surgery. Whether you’re looking for increased mobility after a joint replacement or in need of some extra medical attention after a prolonged illness, you’ll want a professional, yet caring, facility that can fully address your individual recovery goals.

PLAN AHEAD

If possible, do your homework and arrange to visit the rehabilitation facility you’re considering in advance of your hospitalization. Talk to the staff, tour the therapy room, examine the equipment and chat with other patients. Therapists should be skilled, licensed experts who can tailor specific modalities to your individual recovery needs. Ask questions. Do they offer appropriate hours per day of therapy? How many times a week? How about weekends? The amount and duration of therapy required will also depend on your overall health before and after surgery. What are the staffing levels at the facility and how many are registered nurses? What additional medical staff is available?

The County Woman’s Journal

The appearance of the facility itself can speak volumes about the care you’ll receive. Does the facility seem well-maintained and decorated?

sunny outdoors. Believe it or not, lush views to natural environments have been scientifically proven to aid in the healing process!

ADDED AMENITIES MEAN A LOT

DISCHARGE PLANNERS CAN HELP

If your therapy is on an inpatient basis, look for a facility that will address both physical and emotional needs. Food is important! A chef on the premises can mean the difference between basic “hospital food” and more appetizing offerings. Special dietary requirements should be easy menu options. Other small amenities that can make a big difference include Wi-Fi for you and your visitors, televisions and even nicely landscaped grounds so that, weather permitting, you can get a breath of fresh air and enjoy the

If an emergency hospitalization didn’t allow time for prudent research, you can still rely on your hospital discharge planner or social worker to give you rehabilitation program options, with your insurance in mind. A large part of this professional’s job is to give you and your family choices about area locations where you’ll receive the kind of transitional care you need, from basic physical and occupational therapy on high-tech equipment to special therapies to assist with more complex medical issues.

An Incredible Journey with Easterseals!

W

When Journey was born at 28 weeks, her parents, Patrice and Rich, knew they had a journey ahead of them - the inspiration for her name. It was not until Journey was nine months old and had a seizure that they realized their journey would not be the one they expected. When Journey was diagnosed with a rare brain disorder, her parents were concerned about the unknown, but then they found Easterseals and a team of therapists, and knew they were not alone. “It was terrifying at the beginning, but once we had a diagnosis we hit the ground running to find ways to help her and make her life easier,” Patrice says. “I didn’t think my experience with Easterseals could be so amazing. You can tell the therapists love what they do and it shows in the way they care about the people they work with. They are a part of our family. They help Journey be the best she can be. They help make big goals and help her reach them.” A trusted provider of children’s therapy services for more than 65 years, Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore specializes in treating children ages birth through eighteen years with a variety of challenges. Easterseals specializes in meeting the needs of children and their families through creative, playful activities that go beyond traditional services. When Journey started receiving therapy services with Easterseals at 11 months, she was working on better head control, sitting up, making more sounds, swallowing, and grasping items. “We celebrate what she can do. Concentrate on your child and what makes

them better. Easterseals therapists help get Journey excited about what she can do,” Patrice says. “It was so wonderful to have people that understand and can point us in the right direction. Easterseals is a godsend. It helps to have people on our side. Easterseals is in our corner.” Journey is now three and has passed so many milestones with the help of speech, physical and occupational therapies. She is now working on sitting up on her own for longer periods of time, crawling and walking with a walker, which helps her keep up with her brother. “The doctors told us Journey will probably never walk, move, smile, or laugh; but with Easterseals she’s just meeting goal after goal,” Rich says. “Now, I feel like the sky’s the limit, because they’ve laid a foundation for us. Maybe one day she’ll be walking across the stage getting a diploma. That’s my hope.” More than 600 children per year receive physical, speech and occupational therapy at the Easterseals Children’s Therapy Center in Georgetown. Easterseals plays a critical role in providing needed therapy for children with a variety of disabilities, short or long term. hildren with and without disabilities will find the highest quality services designed to meet their individual needs. Ellen now draws on her extensive professional background to design beautifully harmonious living spaces for her clients. Although her favorite look is a casual, yet elegant, coastal style, Ellen’s versatility allows her to work with any style. Her goal is to create a personalized environment that resonates with and enhances how you live. Ellen’s outgoing personality and ability to help clients articulate their personal preferences are key to successfully achieving that goal. Chris and his brother, Tony, started Budget Blinds back in 2005 and now they and their highly experienced staff cover the southern half of Delaware from just south of Dover on down and three counties in Maryland. Both he and his brother are native Sussex Countians in fact their family has been here for many generations and self employment was a model presented to them early with one grandfather an area farmer and the other owning a shoe shop just off the circle in Georgetown. Growing up in a close family, they were taught the virtues of love, grace, loyalty, and hard work. They were always taught to be accountable to one another, to work first, play later and if it’s worth doing, it is worth doing right. They carry those values into both their personal lives and in the business that they run. After more than ten years of Budget Blinds they have acquired a great deal of knowledge about window coverings and running a business in general but they feel that one of their best assets is the desire to learn more and improve along the way. With only 10 full time employees, including the two of them, and one part time, they have nearly 70 years of experience when combined. That is a particular point of pride because they feel it is an indicator of what really makes a good company, which is employees that love what they do. They know that a person who is enjoying their job, will do it better and with more care. That leads to what Chris and Tony feel is their most important skill and that is choosing employees. “If we make sure our employees and our clients are happy, our happiness will always fall right in line.” says Chris. Chris is Married to his wife Julie who is a speech pathologist for a local elementary school and they have 2 boys, Gavin and Parker who are 8 and 6 respectively. He loves just being around his family, reading, golfing and fishing.

Home & Garden

Keep the elements out– Enclose your screen porch! Spring is coming and you’re dreading having to deal with the pollen and dirt in your screen porch. How about a permanent solution? Many homeowners are familiar with the popular sunroom additions on the market today, and those who have purchased one enjoy the extra living space available for family gatherings or evening relaxation as well as high return on investment value. However did you know that existing screen porches can be enclosed as well at a fraction of the price of a new sunroom addition? Now is the time to plan for this project. Many of today’s homes have decks or are now often being built with screen porches as a standard feature. Exposed to the elements, decks and patios are often simply too hot or too cold to use much of the year. Screen porches offer shade and some bug protection; but, summer heat, dirt, rain, and winter cold with snow and ice again restrict comfortable usage to a short while out of the year. Studies and testimonials indicate that a sunroom addition, or conversion of an existing porch, is very likely to become the most enjoyed and well used room in the house. They offer protection from bugs, dirt, pollen and bad weather while preserving the outdoor feel of a deck or patio. Sunrooms maximize the seasons you can enjoy your back yard and your view and are today can be more sophisticated in terms of thermal efficiency and ultraviolet protection. The building industry is strongly committed toward pre-fabricated, panelized, or modular enclosure systems. This is due to the many advantages of making the product indoors in a controlled environment, to close tolerances, using modern equipment and techniques. The jobsite work is greatly reduced for a quick installation to eliminate the stress and mess of a stick framed construction project at your home. While all factory made sunroom additions offer a degree of standardized quality control, there are so many variations of the old 60’s Florida room, that it must be extremely confusing to a homeowner to select the best product for your money. Inexpensive aluminum screen or glass enclosures may install quicker and have less maintenance than a stick built

addition, but they conduct heat and cold, the finish can scratch or the kick panels can dent easily. Better rooms with aluminum structure are now being built by many fabricators using vinyl clad insulated panels and powder coated paint finishes (like a car) for added durability. The best have thermally broken wall mullions, insulated foam core walls and can be purchased with insulated UV blocking glass. Over the past few decades, many products formerly made of wood or metal are now made of vinyl. Look at what happened to aluminum siding, cast iron drain pipes, and alls sorts of car parts, and today you see vinyl everywhere. While there are some vinyl clad sunroom products on the market, they tend to be expensive with bulky frames since the vinyl is not structural and must have aluminum internal support. These rooms are similar to “stick building” and must be assembled from parts one piece at a time on site. This places the quality control in the hands of the installer and workmanship can vary. Some of the more popular vinyl clad systems available locally use window technology that dates back to the 80’s in which the frames of the windows and sashes are screwed together with corner gussets. These outdated window systems date back before welded frames became the norm. They are still being used since it is a daunting task to totally retool sunroom factories components and production systems. North America’s fastest growing sunroom and window company, Sunspace sunrooms of Toronto, Canada, has made it easy to select from their state of the art product line. Patio Systems can offer residential hybrid enclosures with aluminum and vinyl products. You can choose a custom glass slider system, with screen, or a folding horizontal glass enclosure with retractable screen. The Fire department schedule allotted time off for a 2nd job. I began painting approximately 30 years ago. Parents brought us to the beach when we were very young. Got a taste and new I wanted to live here. Moved to Rehoboth 8 years ago and started up the business. We have now built up an extensive reference list and pride ourselves on quality workmanship. Two years ago we also started Lambs Roof & Exterior cleaning in order to prepare homes properly for our services. e now have our certification as an authorized professional. There are only three companies in the state that are certified. e can clean the dirty black streaks on the roof, remove mildew and mold from siding. We clean stucco and now have started cleaning cedar homes. Some cedar homes turn gray and that looks beachy, others turn black and that is dirt and mold. We can clean your home or business. Did you know … y egan oberts Deck, M Somewhere between 25 and 40o F, your heat pump reaches its balance point. At this point, your heat pump’s output exactly equals the heating needs of the conditioned space. In other words, your heat pump needs to run constantly to produce enough heat to maintain a comfortable temperature. Below the balance point, supplementary heat is needed to maintain your thermostat’s set point; your auxiliary or electric heat will kick on to help out, usually indicated by a light on your thermostat. Your electric heat will run just long enough to satisfy your thermostat’s set point before turning off again.

Mechanical, the people that make us great and the services we offer. Contact us anytime Locally, 3 2 3 1 . Toll free, 233 1 . r on the web, www. custommechanical.com.

If the outdoor temperature remains below your system’s balance point, your indoor temperature will drop a few degrees while your heat pump tries to keep up before your electric heat turns on again. So, don’t be alarmed if you’ve got the thermostat set at 70° and it’s only reaching 68°. To maintain 70° below your balance point, turn your thermostat up to 72° or 73°, but keep in mind that your electric heat will run longer to reach that temperature. In order to keep your electricity costs down, set the thermostat at the lowest point at which you feel comfortable (maybe even in a sweater and socks) and utilize your programmable thermostat to set the temperature back even further when no one’s at home. Pay special attention to the humidity levels in your home as well; it will help you feel more comfortable. A common sign that your air is too dry is when you have a lot of static electricity in your home or when your nose, throat or skin feel dry and scratchy. Plus, if you suffer from allergies or asthma, dry air can aggravate your symptoms and even cause nosebleeds. And that’s not to mention the issues that can plague your houseplants, hardwood oors, musical instruments and wallpaper Luckily, there a lot of different ways to increase the moisture in your home, from uick, temporary fi es like boiling water on your stove to leaving your bathroom door open when you shower. The most comprehensive and efficient way to solve a low humidity problem, though, is with a humidifier. This can be a simple stand alone unit or a unit connected directly through your heating and air system. Either way, the benefits of optimal humidity levels in your home include increased comfort, warmer-feeling air, lower utility bills and none of problems mentioned above As always, at Custom Mechanical we are happy to answer any questions you may have. Are You a Tilter or a Lifter? That’s a question we have asked many times through the years. What we are really asking is whether you are looking for blinds or shades. That is a major dividing line when choosing window coverings and there are pros and cons to both especially when you are speaking about function. Shades are limited by only having the ability to be raised or lowered whereas blinds can be raised, lowered, or tilted to provide a more variable level of light control and privacy. That being said, shades are better at completely blocking out light because they are one piece of material and are not slatted like blinds and shutters. There are so many little things to consider like blinds can be heavy where shades are light and easy to lift and lower. Questions like “which one would be easier to clean?” have gray answers because the answer is so dependent on how the covering will be used and where it will hang. The number of factors to contemplate is considerable so we will not even talk here about hybrids which are coverings that have benefits of both blinds and shades. People often go that route when they discover that they are neither tilter nor lifter but a combination of both. alling a professional to help you figure it out is always sage advice when dealing with custom work. e make it easy to find the consultant in your area. All you have to do is go to www. budgetblinds.com, enter the zip code in which you would like your new coverings to be hung and presto!, you will get the phone number of your local consultant. You can call to get the answers to questions you may have and or to set up a complimentary in home consultation where we will bring tons of samples and knowledge right to your doorstep. e really try hard to find the best window covering for the person and the given situation. We enjoy working with both tilters, lifters, and those in between so please let us help you make the best selection and let us worry about the measurements and installation. Once your coverings are installed you can feel confident that we are but a phone call away if any problems ever arise. Our warranties are the best available and we run a full service shop. You are dealing directly with us through the entire process. Call Budget Blinds today to schedule your free in home consultation. A tip for tilters…….If you close your blinds but still see lines of light on the oor, simply tilt the louvers up and due to the downward angle of the sun, the light will be blocked thus saving your oors from that uv damage.

A few months later after signing contracts with them, we experienced a bed bug problem, immediately they were finding a solution, Dean Bennett spent many hours researching how to handle this problem in a library where the heat treatment could not be used and within days had our situation under control and found a maintenance program for regular prevention. Dean, and all Bennett employees are professional, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. Recently I experienced an issue with bed bugs. I called around to several different pest companies in Baltimore, MD and I came across Bennett Termite & Pest Solutions. I spoke with Bruce for over 40 minutes, he answered every single question I had. He was very informative and detailed about the process not missing a beat. The next day I told him I wanted to hire them for my treatment he did a conference call with himself and Dean(Owner) and there after Vinnie and Dean came out a few days later and did the heat treatment. Very professional, informative, fast and efficient. I work for a housing office in Baltimore and we plan on using this company for some of our client’s needs. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone. It’s worth every dime and you will have a peace of mind bug free.

Rehoboth Car Wash By: Chris Dispoto We are certainly receiving our share of winter wrath here at the beach. Salt and sand on every road from curb to curb helps make it safe for travel, but what a mess it makes of our cars. This mess not only looks terrible, it is harmful to your vehicle. The white coating of salt on the paint you see also coats the undercarriage of your car. If this corrosive coating is not removed in a timely manner, it will certainly plague you in the future. Lucky for everyone, Rehoboth Car Wash offers an undercarriage wash with every Deluxe or Ultimate Wash Package. This service safely removes the salt and sand from the bottom of your car. It is also a good time of the year to book your Spring detailing appointment. March and April are our busiest months in the detail bay. With winter behind us and summer in front of us that once a year service will be much appreciated by your hard working vehicle. For an estimate or detailing, stop by the car wash anytime. Rehoboth Car Wash is located on the Route 1 service road at Rehoboth Avenue. Winter hours are 8a.m. to 5p.m. everyday, weather permitting. For more information call 302227-6177.

CONFUCIUS CHINESE CUISINE Here Is What Our Customers Say:

Confucius Chinese Restaurant was opened in the spring of 2004 in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Shawn Xiong, the owner, had previously owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmington prior to relocating to the beach area. Since then, Confucius has been named the best Chinese restaurant in the Delaware Today Magazine, Sussex County Woman and favorably mentioned in various newspaper and magazines. herever you go, you probably will find a Chinese eatery in every shopping center that offers pretty much the same items such as lo miens and chow miens. The Confucius menu is more focused on items you don t usually find in those places. The name Confucius lets people know it is Chinese, but with a delicate, refined gourmet restaurant and not a fried rice and egg rolls fast food eatery like a McDonalds. There are different popular dishes for different customers depending on their individual personal taste. If you like spicy food, we offer dishes such as Hot Pepper Chicken, Cumin Beef or Kung Pao Shrimp. f you like fish, almon and lack ean auce, Steam Halibut or Crispy Whole Black Sea Bass

are all excellent choices. f you are a first time customer, they encourage you to tell your server what you do or do not like, and they will offer the right recommendation for you. Confucius believes that every customer deserves special attention, if you order something that you don’t like, they encourage you to send it back and try again AT NO COST. They want customers to have a pleasant dining experience. Reservations Are Recommend.

15 of us were in Rehoboth Beach over the past weekend. We had decided to try Confucius based upon friends recommendations and Yelp reviews. They were very accommodating with the reservation and by providing a nice space, including a high chair. We started with assorted appetizers, including spring rolls, various dumplings, beef sticks and the like. Everything was delicious. So on to the main courses. Eggplant in black bean sauce, Singapore Rice Noodles, Hunan Beef, Chicken with Broccoli, 5 Spice Duck (they will warn you it is very hot-we asked for it to be on the mild side, and still had some heat, but we loved it!) Shrimp and scallops with walnuts (my favorite dish of the night), soft shell crab, chicken fries rice and a few other dishes that never made their way to my end of the table. Portions are large, but the food was so delicious we had very little left over. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant - everything is prepared to order, and they deserve all 5 stars. First time here, and it won’t be our last. Loved the seafood hot and sour soup; chicken hot and sour was excellent as well. Spicy shredded duck was under-spiced, but that was my fault for telling server I did not want it too hot, and she bent over backwards to make sure it was mild. Can’t wait to try other menu items. Our server was outstanding. Could not have been more attentive and accommodating. Co-owner Danielle was a pleasure to talk with as well. This is not your typical fast-food Chinese restaurant, so be prepared to pay up for quality. - Glen L., Pikesville, MD

Awesomely amazing with a side of extravagance!” - Steven B., Baltimore, MD

The food here is beautiful. The setting is elegant. he drin s are fine. t is a nice change fro the seafood staples of this beach town. I always over order. It is worth it. - Badhoh G., Rehoboth, Delaware

Why Every Growing Business Needs a Website. Whether it’s a local company or a national chain, virtually every establishment has its own website these days. It’s especially important for small business owners to have one, as they don’t always have the same resources as larger businesses to get the word out to potential customers. With an already long list of things to do, it may be tempting to skip the website and focus on other advertising venues. However, having a strong professional online presence is vital to the success of any establishment. Not convinced? Here are a few reasons why every

small business needs a website: 1. Saves Money. A lot of small business owners believe they can’t afford to have a professional website made. Truth is, they can’t afford not to do it. With all-inclusive website packages from DelmarvaVoIP, businesses can get a stunning website, hosting, and email starting at $99/month! 2. Saves Time. It takes time to provide all the information consumers need to know about the business. Using the phone, printed materials, emails, and other options really cuts into that time. Keeping the website updated with commonly requested information such as store hours, prices, and location is a huge time saver. Now the business owner can focus his attention on other things. 3. Accessibility. Websites are available 24 hours a day to everyone with an Internet connection. It’s a convenient way for both potential and regular customers to review services and products when the store itself is closed. Given how busy people are today, having that convenience is frequently an important selling point. 4. Credibility. Consumers almost always turn to the Internet to seek out the services and products they need. Having a website will give a business more credibility. If one can’t be found, customers will instead turn to competitors with an online presence. A generic website is a good start, but hiring someone to give it a professional makeover will improve the company’s image and help web searchers feel confident in their choice. It’s especially helpful to those who work from home, since there is no storefront available for promotion. 5. Keep Customers Informed. It’s much easier, quicker, and cheaper to update a website with new information about services and products than it is to update printed material. It’s an effective way to get the word out about special promotions, new items, and upcoming events. Printed brochures and catalogues become outdated while a website stays relevant

6. Access a Wider Market. Regardless of what businesses offer, websites give them alternate selling locations. Rather than being confined to a local market, services and products can now be advertised and accessed on a global scale. This opens the doors to an extremely large potential customer base. 7. Advertising Medium. A website is the perfect place for a business to showcase its work, no matter what its niche may be. Having an image gallery or online portfolio and product testimonials or reviews proves to the world the quality of the work and can help convince consumers to make a purchase. 8. Improved Customer Service. Besides serving as a worldwide advertisement, a website is the perfect outlet for business owners who would like to share free tips and advice with their customers without incurring any additional costs. For example, accountants might offer various financial management tips, and an organic food shop can give recipes related to their products. FAQ pages, newsletters, and business blogs are also great ways to give customers a little something extra while encouraging them to keep coming back.

“Shasta Shutterbug” Has Arrived!

BY: MIKE BAKER I always like to do things with my photography just a little different or something more my way. My “Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece, Ashley, had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar style vehicle. I initially spotted this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the idea of buying it. After I had seen some ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta.” I was sure it was already sold. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many “camper photo booths” out there. I never realized how big photo booths are becoming. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and started noticing the appeal. figured photo booths would be more of a short term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular. So this was my winter project! So ideas started rolling through my mind. I had my daughter, Courtney, listen to my ideas. Not good. Seems like she had better ideas then I did. Most 21 year olds know more about what attracts the younger crowds. She’s the designer, I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did. She was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. One never knows what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some walls and oors from 4 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood oor. t is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside, a photo booth and seating. Sorry no room for rest rooms. After Courtney placed it on Facebook, it was booked instantly the next day for 2 bookings. It was an instant hit at the 2016 Heart Ball in Dover. We also made a 2 day appearance at the Dover International Speedway on the recent race weekend. We have gotten many bookings already for weddings, gala events and other outdoor events. We also have the standard photo booth, but I think this one has gotten much attention. fter all, this is the first one in the First State!

Bypassing the Corporate Ladder By: Luke Kennedy I was lucky enough to grow up in a well educated, af uent family that had the ability to afford me every opportunity parents could want for their child. I went to a prestigious private school, participated in sports, and e tracurricular activates. had great friends and managed to stick to the principles my parents had brought me up to believe in such as hard work, honesty, ntegrity, and self sufficiency, effectively keeping me out of harm s way and trouble. hen it was time to go to college, was glad to go. had been accepted to a pres tigious school n oston that was e cited about, and felt that it was time to stand on my own two feet and start carving my own way in the world. ollege accomplished for me what any re alistic e pectations could hope for the ability to think analytically and e press myself ap propriately.
