New Media Optics

By: Glenn Courtney, A.B.O.C. Delaware Eye Optical In today’s world of cell phones, tablets, computers, and flat screens the demand for various focal distances is greater now than ever. The ergonomics needed to satisfy theses visual requirements can lead to digital eye strain (DES) if not addressed. Research shows 65% of Americans report “experiencing symptoms of DES”. The number of Americans who do not even know “computer eyewear can protect against DES” is around 27%. Various companies have designed lenses to enhance patients vision over the years, but until recently none offered designs to address multiple needs. Work environments, life styles, hobbies, and other situations can require focal distances ranging from near (Keyboard), Intermediate (computer screen) and short distance (small room settings). Discussions with our opticians can zero in what might be your best lens of choice. Hoya’s “New Media Optics”

offer answers to your various needs with iD Space, iD Screen, and iD Zoom lenses. The iD Space is ideal for performing activities where focus beyond a computer screen is needed. The lens design allows for sharp short distance vision while still providing crystal clear vision at a close range such as a keyboard. The iD Screen has become very popular. I wear it myself. It’s a great choice for professionals requiring maximal clarity at an intermediate distance in environments such as stores and offices. If you work on more than one monitor or stand at a computer this lens allows for wide panoramic viewing in an intermediate space as well as variable vertical focal lengths. The iD Zoom is a lens for

those who work at hobbies or a single computer requiring longer lengths of time in this up-close zone. Zoom helps in near areas providing providing sharp vision at a close range. The visual zone is very wide for a near focus lens but still allows for focus to the computer screen and slightly beyond. We have covered in past issues blue light emitted from the sun and digital screens and its effects on vision. We recommend Recharge an anti-glare lens coating reducing up to 30% of Blue Light emitted from digital screens. These new lens designs, combined with Recharge, not only reduce Blue Light but also reduce eye strain, fatigue, headaches, loss of focus, blurred vision and DES. The proper lens

design, along with Recharge can help keep eyes comfortable, refreshed and can be used by all ages. The materials available can accommodate any prescription or frame requirements such as a high prescription or a drill mounted frame design. The technology of lens design continues to respond to changing work environments and the tools we all use to better our day-today lives. Lens designs such as the New Media Optics reflect Delaware Eye Optical’s constant search to bring our clients cutting edge lens designs to complement our wide inventory of frames. We are here to improve your life visually as well as make you look great doing so.

Health & Medicine

Women and Heart Disease: Some numbers to think about

By R. Alberto Rosa, M.D., FACC Dr. Ramon Alberto Rosa is a graduate of the University of Santo Domingo in his native Dominican Republic. He completed his post-graduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia with a residency in internal medicine (1991-1994), Chief Medical Resident (1994-1995), and cardiology fellowship (1995-1998). Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July 1998. He has served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Dr. Rosa is trained in non-invasive cardiology, Nuclear Transesopageal Echocardiograms, as well as invasive diagnostic procedures and pacemaker implantations. Dr. Rosa is board certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is also a Certified Aviation Medical Examiner and is Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine. The American Heart Association has released their 2016 Statistical Fact Sheet (1) in women and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Some notable facts are worth highlighting: Cardiovascular Disease • More than one in three women have some form of CV disease • In 2013, there were 398,086 female deaths due to CV disease (49.7% of all CV deaths) • In 2013, CVD caused about 1 death every 80 seconds among females. That represents about the same number of female deaths from cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, and diabetes combined. There were 40,861 deaths attributable to breast cancer in females; lung cancer claimed 70,542 females. One in 31.6 deaths of females was attributable to breast cancer, whereas 1 in 8.0 was attributable to CHD. For

The County Woman’s Journal

comparison, 1 in 4.7 females died of cancer, whereas 1 in 3.2 died of CVD • In 2010, 25.1% of by- pass and 32.9% of angioplasty patients were female. 30.3% of heart transplant patients in 2012 were female. Stroke • An estimated 3.6 million female stroke survivors are alive today. • Each year about 55,000 more women than men have a stroke. This is because the average life expectancy for women is greater than for men, and the highest rates for stroke are in the oldest age groups. • In 2013, stroke caused the death of 75,287 females (58.4% of total stroke deaths). In 2010, 530,000 females were discharged from short-stay hospitals after having a stroke. High Blood Pressure (HBP) • One in three adults in the United States has HBP. • Among women age 20 and older, the following have HBP: 30.1% of nonHispanic whites; 46.1% of non-Hispanic blacks and 29.9% of Hispanics. In 2013, 38,379 females died from HBP. They represented 53.3% of deaths from HBP • Among adults, 18.3% of white women; 13.4% of black women and 7.4% of Hispanic women smoke cigarettes. Diabetes Mellitus • Of the estimated 21.1 million American adults with physician-diagnosed diabetes, about 10.6 mil- lion are women; 6.1% of non-Hispanic whites, 14.6% of non-Hispanic blacks and 11.8% of Hispanics. • Of the estimated 8.1 million Americans with undiagnosed diabetes, about 3.0 million are women; 1.7% of nonHispanic whites, 2.3% of non-Hispanic blacks and 5.0% of Hispanics. • Of the estimated 80.8 million Americans with pre-diabetes, about 34.3 million are women; 28.9% of non-Hispanic whites; 27.8% of non-Hispanic blacks and 26.0% of Hispanics.. • In 2013, diabetes killed 35,737 females. • 319,000 females diagnosed with diabetes were discharged from short-stay hospitals in 2010.

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) (ICD/10 codes I20-I25) (ICD/9 codes 410-414, 429.2) • About 6.6 million females alive today have CHD. Of these, 2.7 million have a history of myocardial infarction (MI, or heart attack). • Among women age 20 and older, 1.8% of non-Hispanic whites have had an MI; 2.2% of non- Hispanic blacks and 1.7% of Hispanics. • Each year new and recurrent MI and fatal CHD will impact an estimated 405,000 women. • The incidence of CHD in women lags behind men by 10 years for total CHD and by 20 years for more serious clinical events such as MI and sudden death. • In 2013, 161,698 females died from CHD; 50,742 from MI. Overweight and Obesity • An estimated 31.6% of girls age 2 to 19 are overweight or obese; 29.2% non-

Hispanic whites, 36.1% non-Hispanic blacks, and 37.0% Hispanics. • Of these girls, 17.2% are obese; 15.6% non-Hispanic whites, 20.5% nonHispanic blacks, and 20.6% Hispanics. • An estimated 64.7% of women age 20 and older are overweight or obese; 61.2% non-Hispanic whites, 81.9% nonHispanic blacks, and 76.3% Hispanics. • Of these women, 36.0% are obese; 32.5% non-Hispanic whites, 57.5% nonHispanic blacks, and 42.9% Hispanics. These sobering statistics confirm, once again, that heart disease remains the number one cause of mortality and a major cause of morbidity (illness) in American females. Much remains to be done and the role of early childhood. The role of parents is crucial in the effective prevention of many of the above health issues. Starting early helps provide children with the best chances for healthy lives.

Adult Day Care Keeping Seniors Active

W

When Gabe’s mother, Rita, fell at home, he knew it was time for her to move in with him, but he also knew it was important to keep her active. After considering all of his options, he found that the Easterseals’ adult day services were the absolute best fit for his family. “I researched everywhere and no one compares to the services Easterseals provides,” Gabe says. “The staff is phenomenal. They do an excellent job of keeping my mom stimulated and motivated.” Easterseals adult day care services provide support for adults, young and old, who have experienced a disabling condition such as Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, brain injury, other physical limitations and conditions of aging. Transportation and meals are provided. The program provides a break from caregiving for families or those who work and have other responsibilities. A full-time nurse provides medical support including monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar, coordinating with physician offices and arranging appointments. The nurse acts as a liaison between participant families, case managers and other health care providers. If needed, physical, occupational and speech therapies also are available on site through Easterseals, and can be added to the individual’s personal care plan. In addition, trained staff are able to help all participants with activities of daily living and personal needs. “Knowing my mom is safe, secure, well-nourished and engaged enables me to concentrate fully on my job and know she is being stimulated,” Gabe says. “If my mom were at home she would be sitting on the sofa, but the staff at Easterseals keeps her moving and eating healthy.”

The County Woman’s Journal

Participants in the adult day program are encouraged to choose from a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, exercise, community trips, computer access and more. “My mom’s favorite activity is going on field trips, especially to get her hair and nails done. It makes my heart pitter patter when she gets home and says ‘look at my nails’ and she is so proud,” Gabe says. “The field trips are so well managed and Easterseals has wonderful volunteers to help out.” Like all Easterseals services, adult day care services are comprehensive and individualized to meet each client’s needs, family-focused to meet each family member’s concerns and have the goal of enhanced independence. The adult day care program offers a break for family caregivers responsible for a relative who is unable to function independently, but does not require 24-hour nursing care. Delaware Hospice Provides Comfort, while Lightening Burden touched the lives of folks like the Scheckers through our programs and services: Delaware Transitions, Delaware Palliative, Katybug Pediatric Program, Delaware Hospice, Delaware Hospice Center, Bereavement, and New Hope. As a trusted

Delaware Hospice’s compassionate staff and volunteers have provided comfort and lightened the burdens of families dealing with a serious illness for 35 years. And for 35 years, we have been hearing the same words: “If I had only known, I would have called you sooner.” Even as professional nurses, Joy and Robin Schecker wished they had called Delaware Hospice sooner. A blind date brought Joy and Jerry Schecker together 55 years ago. Jerry was an electrician foreman and Joy served as a maternity nurse in upstate New York. There they raised three daughters, Robin, and twins, Kim and Kelley. When Jerry was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer, Jerry and Joy decided to pursue Jerry’s dream of moving to the beach and buying a boat. Rehoboth Beach became their home for the next 20 years. Ultimately, symptoms of Jerry’s disease began to worsen. Joy said, “As a retired nurse I knew I could care for him. I promised Jerry that he would remain at home and I kept my promise for two years with the help of private nurses.” Also a nurse, Robin Schecker understood what her father was going through as his symptoms worsened. Navigating the time difference from California, she called her parents regularly to check in. On one of the calls home, Robin heard her father say, “I’m done fighting. I need you to help Mom.” At that moment she knew what she had to do. She packed up and moved to

Delaware. She said, “The time I spent with them was amazing for our family.” However, as time passed, both Robin and her mother began to realize that even two skilled nurses needed more help. Joy was familiar with hospice care, but hadn’t considered calling them until a friend at Church suggested she contact Delaware Hospice just to see if they could help. She said, “As soon as the Admission Nurse walked in our home, the weight of the world was taken off me.” Robin agreed. “Delaware Hospice became my life line, my sanity. Everyone who came in was spectacular. Not only did they take care of him, they took care of me and my mother. ‘Are you taking care of yourself? You can’t help him if you are not okay,’ they would tell me. I really appreciated

that and it allowed me to focus on my family. I could spend that precious time as a

daughter instead of a nurse.” Joy remembered, “Jerry fell in love with his Delaware Hospice nurse, Kelly, and his C.N.A., Ronnie. Before Ronnie would leave after each visit, she would get Jerry up and they would dance around the room. He loved those moments and always waited for his ‘dance partner’ each day. Every Delaware Hospice representative who walked in our home was wonderful and so caring.” One night, Jerry was having trouble breathing, and Joy called the nurse. The nurse arrived and Joy later found out that the nurse had left her own father’s dying side to come to Jerry. “I could not have imagined the internal struggle she must have gone through. But I was so grateful for her compassion and help at that time.” At Jerry’s Memorial Service, Kelly and Ronnie sat in the front row. Joy said, “The love that both ladies and all Delaware Hospice staff and volunteers showed Jerry and my family was amazing. I only wish I knew what they offered earlier.” Since its founding in 1982, Delaware Hospice has

CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Fat Removal pockets of excess fat. This non-invasive procedure represents an alternative to surgical liposuction by using a novel cooling technology that permanently removes fat cells from treated areas.

How does CoolSculpting Work?

Michelle Parsons, MD

is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. The biggest trend in cosmetic surgery is the expansion of non-invasive body countouring technology, the best of which is CoolSculpting, which is now available at ReNove Medical in Rehoboth Beach. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat. Arms and legs can be treated as well. Unlike some other non-surgical technologies that release fat from fat cells, such as Vasershape and I-Lipo, Coolsculpting destroys the fat cells thereby eliminating treated fat permanently, as our body does not make new fat cells. Coolsculpting is a unique non-surgical treatment for removal of fat from localized

The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas.

What are the most common areas to be treated?

Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. These are the areas that CoolSculpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can

be treated and eliminated by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the muffin top, waist, brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.

Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting?

Before

The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. It is common to have numbness or decreased sensitivity in the treated area lasting 1 to 2 weeks. In some instances patients will develop a burning tingling sensation 5 days after the treatment which can be controlled with a Lidoderm patch. There are virtually no long term negative side effects.

What does CoolSculpting feel like?

Our treatment room is very comfortable where you will relax on a padded recliner. When the CoolSculpting is applied to the fatty area to be treated there is a sensation of pulling that feels slightly uncomfortable for the first 5 to 10 minutes. Gradually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. There seems to be a natural endorphin release during the treatment so patients are very relaxed during the treatment, which takes an hour. Some people have fallen asleep during the treatment! A typical treatment session lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how many areas are treated. During the treatment, we have

After Netflix available so you can watch a movie or catch up on your favorite television program. Busy moms find this time to themselves a real treat! We also have Wi-Fi.

How quickly do people see results?

After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells are actually killed and will be eliminated by the body over time. Many report seeing changes in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. The full benefit will take as long as 60 to 90 days.

How long to results last?

Once the fat cells are frozen, killed and naturally eliminated by your body, the results are permanent. You can still gain weight in other areas if you over eat and don’t continue to try to remain fit. If you are interested in learning more about CoolSculpting and would like to see if you are a good candidate for this effective treatment to lose unwanted fatty areas, please call us today to set up an appointment to meet with Dr. Michelle Parsons at ReNove Medical, Health Rejuvenating Spa, in Rehoboth Beach, 302-227-1079. The Nurses of Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke Bring More Than Care to Patients and Their Families

Marcy Burke, RN, celebrates Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke’s annual “30 Days of Caring” with Edward Harvey.

By Robbie Tarpley Raffish

M place to recover from an injury, illness Most people would agree that best

or surgery is in the comfort of home – but it takes planning and management, especially for senior citizens. Changing bandages, cleaning wounds, planning therapies and managing medications are just a few of the many concerns patients voice. For many, home health care can make all the difference. But, home health care means letting a stranger come into your home. How do you know who to trust? “Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke (PHCN) has been serving this area for decades and was recently named the preferred home care provider of Nanticoke Health Services,” said Dr. Joseph Kim Medical Director of PHCN. “Registered nurse case managers can be crucial to home-based recovery, and no will work harder for the patients in Sussex County than Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke.” PHCN’s team of nurses work closely with the patient, caregiver and family to educate them on the disease treatment, prevention and medication management. It is their goal to help every patient regain their independence

and get back to a quality of life with family and friends. “Nurses are a rare breed,” said PHCN’s Branch Director, Beverly White. “They juggle the needs of their patients, jobs and families on a daily – sometimes hourly – basis, and come back each day and do it again. Caregiving is a gift and our registered nurse case managers extend the umbrella of ‘family’ over patients around the county.” Combining hi-tech medical tools with a personalized “hi-touch” approach, PHCN nurses can deliver everything from tracking vital statistics to providing certain types of chemotherapy; from treating chronic conditions such as diabetes and CHF to monitoring medication and providing injections. Jack Fisher of Seaford, De. appreciated the nursing care extended by Crystal Fensick of Peninsula Home Care of Nanticoke. “If she hadn’t identified that there was fluid in my lungs and called my doctor, I may not be here today,” said Fisher. “Crystal was helpful, caring, professional and made me feel comfortable. She taught me what I could and could not do in the condition I was in. We referred to the CHF Zone Chart that showed me what signs and symptoms to look for … I have been stable and feel great since my discharge.” Jack’s wife, Carlis, added, “We have learned so much from the Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke team. I honestly don’t know where we would be without them. They made it possible for my husband to celebrate his 80th birthday with our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. You couldn’t ask for more.”

Every Breath of Life is a Gift Gena Hammond’s days are filled to overflow, and she likes it that way. The Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke (PHCN) Registered Nurse Case Manager travels the major thoroughfares and back roads of Sussex County, bringing care to patients and support to their families. “I wanted a career that was challenging, interesting and that made a difference in people’s lives,” said Hammond, who has been with PHCN for about seven years. “I get that on a daily basis, and it is very gratifying.” Hammond loves the flexibility of the job, and she spends her workday managing many different aspects of patient Gena Hammond, RN care. As a caregiver, decisionmaker, communicator, patient advocate, teacher and manager of care, she particularly loves bringing cheer and comfort to those in need. She recently participated in PHCN’s “30 Days of Caring,” celebrating Spring by bringing flowers to her homebound patients. “Each delivery brought a genuine smile of appreciation to their faces.” Hammond’s caregiving doesn’t end when she gets home. A resident of Sussex County, she cares for three teenagers. In her spare time, she heads to the beach and boats. She also loves antiquing, restoration and classic cars. What is Ultherapy? is a face and neck treatment that improves skin laxity in a meaningful way but completelynon–surgically.

Jowls

Michelle Parsons, MD

is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. Here at ReNove Medical, Dr. Parsons offers Ultherapy, a state of the art medical procedure utilizing focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten sagging skin. No scalpel or anesthesia is needed. Ultherapy is great for people who would like tightening and lifting of facial skin without have a surigcal facelift. The Ulthera sound energy passes right through the skin and targets the areas you want lifted. During a typical 30-60 minute Ultherapy treatment session, an ultrasound applicator is passed over each region of the face. The sound waves emitted deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue. The beauty of Ultherapy ‘uplifting ultrasound’ is that it

Ultherapy works great for sagging jowls, where the skin is fatty, heavy and drooping. Ultherapy is able to reduce this fatty heaviness, tapering the jaw line, for a more youthful look. Ultherapy can restore a more youthful shape to the face from a square to the inverted triangle.

Nasolabial Folds

Ultherapy also works well to minimize the drooping of excess skin that we get along each side of the nose, or lower cheeks. You may think that you need to fill in these areas with a filler, but the real problem may be that fat and loose skin is just falling down due to the effects of gravity. With ultherapy we can target this area and minimize the fattiness and tighten up that skin. Again this will restore the more youthful balance of the face with the center of gravity higher in the cheek areas.

Neck

Ultherapy can tighten up that loose skin underneath our necks as well. The area that Ultherapy works the best is that area just underneath the chin and extending into that curve of the neck. Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a surgical neck lift. But if you have somewhat loose and fatty skin in your upper neck, hanging just beneath your chin, Ultherapy can improve this area, and improve your profile.

Perhaps one the most dramatic areas that Ultherapy can improve on without surgery is the eye area and creating a brow lift, helping to lift heavy drooping eyelids. Ultherapy can make the eyes appear more open,

more awake, rested and more youthful. This may be subtle change but this small difference can have a significant effect! Our clients really love this part of the Ultherapy results.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Ultherapy?

After just one treatment with no downtime, your skin will gradually shift back into a more youthful position. Improvements include a sleeker, more defined jawline and tighter skin on the neck under the chin. Sagging skin on the cheeks can be tightened and lifted, which in turn can

After

improve folds from the nose to mouth, folds from the mouth to jaw, and drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look in general. The results of Ultherapy are permanent, just as the results of a face-lift are permanent, 0f course, your skin will continue its natural aging process. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery but looking for meaningful results.

TESTIMONIAL One week after my Ultherapy Treatment, my husband, after being out of town for a couple of days asked me “what’s different about you,” he was staring at my face! Not having told him about my treatment I innocently said “what do you mean?” His response was “I am not sure but your face looks different.” I asked “different good or different bad?” He replied “different good, looks stretched.” I was surprised that the results were noticed that quickly. I found the treatment to be bearable, certainly wasn’t pain free, but tolerable. I was very happy when it was over! For the past 2 weeks following the treatment my face has been tender which is a reminder that the treatment is continuing to work! I would highly recommend it to all! K.M. – Ocean City, MD.

Oral Health Tips For Summer By Donna Pleis

S

Summer is here, and your family’s schedule is topsyturvy. That means getting your kids to eat right and maintain good oral hygiene can be a struggle. And with all this extra activity, there may even be a dental emergency or two. Here are a few oral health tips for summer that will help you protect the kids and their developing teeth from long-term damage and avoidable mishaps. Keep Up That Oral Hygiene Brushing twice a day and flossing daily is as important in the summer as it is in any other season. But with vacations, camp and lots of days spent at the pool, don’t be surprised if you frequently need to remind your kids to brush and floss. Now is a great time to buy new toothbrushes to replace the old, worn out or “germy” ones. In fact, you should stock up on extra brushes, as well as travel-sized toothpaste and floss for those summer trips and days out. Tossing a few Colgate® Wisp® brushes into your hand bag is a convenient way to always be hygienically prepared. These disposable products are perfect for staying clean anywhere at any time.

Prevent Dental Emergencies It wouldn’t be summer without lots of swimming, bike riding, volleyball and other playground activities. And while these are great fun, they can unfortunately result in a dental injury. Parents can be prepared for the worst by following these tips: • Make sure your kids follow the “pool rules.” According to the Academy of General Dentistry, many of the summer oral injuries dentists treat are due to a pool accident. Running on slippery pool decks, diving into shallow waters or bumping the pool ledge with their mouth causes many children to either chip

or knock a tooth loose. • Know what to do yourself. Getting to the dentist right away is important, there are things you can do to help. Use warm water and cold packs first, to clean the area and reduce swelling, respectively. Use gauze to stop any bleeding. Place a lost permanent tooth back in the mouth, if possible. If not, use salt water or milk to keep it moist for the ride to the dentist. • Pack an emergency dental care kit to take along for vacation. Essentials for this kit, according to the AGD, are a handkerchief, gauze, a small container with a lid, ibuprofen and your dentist’s contact information.

Summer can really throw your routine for a loop. But by following these oral health tips for summer, your kids can start the school year with great oral hygiene.

R JM

RICHARD J McCANN, D.M.D., P.A. I Committed to Excellence

Now’s the Time for Checkups Parents tend to schedule dental checkups in August, right before class starts. But to prevent dental problems over summer, book the kids in right after school ends. This way, the kids will have a clean bill of dental health for summer. The last thing you want is a child suffering from a toothache while away on summer vacation. Stock a Healthy Kitchen Keep the summer from being an “acid attack” on your family’s teeth by investing in healthy snacks. It’s hard to limit snacking when the kids are home all day, but with the availability of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, you can stock the fridge with healthy options. Be sure to keep the fruits and veggies clean and ready to grab. You’ll feel better about snacking when the kids are reaching for blueberries and strawberries instead of candy and cookies. And swap out the sugary, acidic soft drinks with bottled water.

What is Acupuncture? Dr. Tracy Hudson

Dr. Sheila Burek

Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

Acupuncture is a complementary medical practice that entails stimulating certain points on the body, most often with a needle penetrating the skin, to alleviate pain or to help treat various health conditions. Developed millennia ago in China, numerous recent studies conducted by scientists in Europe and the United States have found that acupuncture is at least moderately effective in treating pain and nausea. For example, one of the largest studies to date on acupuncture and chronic pain — a meta-analysis of 29 well-conducted studies involving nearly 18,000 patients and published in October 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine — found that acupuncture is effective for treating chronic pain and therefore is a reasonable referral option. How Acupuncture Is Said To Work Acupuncture dates back to at least 100 B.C., which is when an organized system of diagnosis and treatment using needles was first described in writing in China. However, the practice likely precedes this written

Dr. Sheila Burek is a Buffalo, NY native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.

history, according to Dr. Edzard Ernst, a research physician specializing in the study of complementary and alternative medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is linked to the belief that disease is caused by disruptions to the flow of energy, or qi, in the body. Acupuncture stimulates points on or under the skin called acupuncture points or acupressure points, releasing this qi. The qi then travels through channels called meridians, according to the Center for Spirituality & Healing at the University of Minnesota. Another hypothesis is that acupuncture works by reducing pro-inflammatory markers, or proteins, in the body. Some animal and human studies suggest that by doing acupuncture, you can significantly decrease these proinflammatory markers — including TNF and IL-1β — which decreases inflammation and reduces pain. Yet another hypothesis applies specifically to how acupuncture can be used to treat nerve damage, such as chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy, a condition that often causes numbness or weakness in the feet and hands. The idea is that by putting the needle in, you stimulate the brain to secrete some nerve growth factor, and then that helps the nerve to regenerate.

Limitations And Misconceptions Increasingly, mainstream doctors and medical institutions are accepting the practice of acupuncture, particularly for treatment of pain and nausea. A 2013 review, for example, found that acupuncture could reduce vomiting and nausea among patients receiving chemotherapy, according to Cancer Research UK. Research is ongoing into whether acupuncture can also help with other cancer treatment-related symptoms, including hot flashes, peripheral neuropathy and lymphedema (swelling of the arm or hand). The World Health Organization maintains an extensive list of diseases and conditions (mostly pain related) possibly treatable by acupuncture, including: back pain, neck pain, headaches, tendinitis, and degenerative joint disease. Non-pain conditions, such as stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances also respond well to acupuncture treatment.

TESTIMONIAL I’ve been experiencing many arthritis issues and just general malaise secondary to my hypothyroidism, seen endochronoligists took many different supplements, and then was advised to see dr Tracy Hudson , she listens, ask questions offers advice and gives great body manipulation , she’s the best chiropractor I’ve found! Bellafill Restore Youthful Facial Volume Michelle Parsons, MD

is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine.

With time, age and gravity, our facial structures tend to lose some of the youthful volume it once had. The cherubic apples in our cheeks fall, leaving us with a drooping jaw line that becomes jowls, and deep lines form around the nose and mouth areas, known as the nasolabial folds. Fortunately there is a solution for these pesky issues of aging. Physicians can now treat their patients with an in-office procedure known as dermal filler injections. What are Dermal Fillers? Dermal fillers are medical products that are injected by a trained physician to fill in facial areas where volume has been lost, so that it is possible to lift those cheeks back up and fill in the deep lines around the nose or nasolabial folds, and the depressions around the lower mouth and chin areas known as the marionette lines. Treatments with dermal fillers are a wonderful way to restore a more youthful appearance. However, what has not been so wonderful is how long they lasted, which has been temporary, on average from 6 to 18 months, as the products are slowly reabsorbed and eliminated by the body. This has been a disappointing aspect of dermal fillers. But this is where the story in non-surgical facial

This product is Bellafill. What is Bellafill? Bellafill® is a smooth, collagenbased dermal filler with polymethyl methacrylate microspheres, or PMMA for short, that is injected by a physician to stimulate your own natural collagen to fill in areas in the face that have lost volume over time, due to aging and gravity. The collagen gel in Bellafill® provides immediate volume and lift so that results are seen right away and once injected, the PMMA microspheres stay in place and create a base that provides structural support and stimulate formation of your own naturally produced collagen for long lasting results. PMMA is a biocompatible material that has been safely used in medical implants, such as lens implants after cataract surgery, and other devices for more than 65 years. How long does Bellafill Last? Since Bellafill stimulates the body to produce it’s own collagen, the results of Bellafill can by quite long lasting. When the skin creates new

Important Features of MRI About Dr. Chao Dr. Philip Chao graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University and was Scholar of the House. He continued his studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, receiving his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (1984-1987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology (1987-1988). Dr. Chao has been interested in MRI technology since its very beginning – the first MRI scan took place in 1981 while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (19881990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in MRI on the first GE Signa 1.5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and specializations complete, Dr. Chao left the University of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of MRI in Wilmington, DE – a position he held for 14 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI Center in Delaware which uses the very latest technology: 3T MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest horizon for MRI. By: Dr. Philip Chao As we start the summer, we at MRI Consultants would like to point out a few important features of MRI. As we saw in one patient this week, high quality MRI can detect fractures that x-rays might miss. A woman fell and hit her shoulder resulting in symptoms that were very much like those of a rotator cuff tear. I should perhaps mention that such a tear is relevant in approximately 20% of patients over the age of 65. Sadly, many never find out they have a tear until it is too late to be treated effectively. Most orthopedic surgeons and family doctors miss RCT in elderly patients. If you are over the age of 65 and have persistent shoulder pain, you need to INSIST on an MRI. Another important use of MRI is related to ACL injury (twisted knees) and subtle fractures. A patient recently had a poor quality 1.5T MRI and was told that there was nothing wrong. Her specialist subjected her to months of physical therapy, three steroid injections and the whole time there was no relief and severe pain. A repeat MRI done on a 3T MRI scanner showed 5 different abnormalities missed by the initial 1.5T scan. The higher resolution and clearer images of 3T MRI makes a huge difference in musculoskeletal problems. (It’s the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray: one is “okay” … the other is so much better!). In my 30 years experience a good quality 3T MRI is better than any other examination and can save you other, unnecessary—and expensive—tests. Lastly, it is important to keep in mind that IV sedation can make a huge difference in an MRI study. The quality of

an image is at least partially linked to a patient’s ability to remain completely still. Sedation can help. At MRI Consultants, we offer IV valium sedation for a mere $50. It is monitored by Dr. Philip Chao and we have been doing this since 1990. Ask your MRI facility if they offer this necessary service. For those who are claustrophobic, this is particularly important. These days, it is increasingly important for patients to educate themselves about the tests their doctors order. Is it the best test? Is it the best facility? Your insurance company will sometimes only pay for the test the first time, so it is important to make sure it is done right. Otherwise, it may need to be repeated and you may be responsible for the additional charge. Many doctors now know about diffusion tensor imaging or susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) for microhemorrhages. A recent paper said many more cases of Alzheimer’s dementia could be detected if SWI is used. When performing an MRI related to Alzheimer’s, MRI Consultants includes proton spectroscopy for free with an MRI with and

without contrast. For the record, we use the safest MR contrasts available, and have, since 2007. A recent article (AJR) from the University of Pittsburgh found Multihance (the contrast we use) is very safe. The adverse reactions (0.07%) over nearly eight years were “infinitesimally small.” (www.safecontrast.com) As we’ve recommended time and time again, ASK questions. Inform yourself. In a time of high deductible plans, it is

increasingly important to arm yourself with information and reduce the number of unnecessary tests. We can help with this. We are more than happy to answer questions. We offer: Customized diet and nutrition plans • Metabolic and hormonal testing Behavioral modification and therapy • Education Fat burning injections • Appetite suppressants Genetic testing • Maintenance programs • Laser liposuction (i-lipo) Our center has all the necessary tools to provide patients with a complete weight loss intervention making our success rate over 95%.

i-lipo (NON-SURGICAL FAT REDUCTION) Do you have a muffin top, love handles or stubborn areas that you cannot eliminate no matter how hard you diet or exercise? For this problem, Healthy Outcomes offers i-lipo, a laser alternative to liposuction. This is what we call “the miracle machine.” The i-lipo system emits low-level laser energy, which makes the fat cells open pores and release the fat which is then transported around the body where it will be burned off. You can treat any area from you neck to your calves in just 20 minutes.

No pain ~ No downtime ~ No surgery Cellulite reduction ~ Tighten skin ~ Reduce Fat INSTANT RESULTS

Healthy Outcomes now introducing genetic testing! What is genetic testing?

Weight can be influenced by many genes. The way we eat, the way our body process food, metabolism, and our resulting health are all related to our genetics. Genetic testing helps identify best way to use dietary and exercise changes for successful weight loss. Healthy weight DNA testing is a comprehensive test aimed at assisting physicians in treating obese and overweight patients. It tests for a variety of genetic markers that have been found to influence diet, metabolism, eating behaviors, and exercise-related traits, as well as weight-related health conditions and medications. Genetic testing also provides an insight on how an individual’s diet may impact his or her risk for disease. This allows us to make a stronger impact on patient health by personalizing diet and exercise recommendations for better weight loss and overall health. Knowing specific genetic predisposition for weight gain/loss will also allow us reduce the risk of regaining weight after weight loss.

Once administered, the Naltrexone binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, essentially blocking the effects of any opioid that would be ingested – meaning the person would not obtain a “high” and the brain’s reward system would not be stimulated. Colon Cancer Screening –

One Day Can Save Your Life I’m too busy…I can’t take time off work…I can’t go a full day without eating…The prep is terrible…I would be so embarrassed… If these thoughts or others have you delaying a colonoscopy, we suggest a different thought. One day can save your life. According to estimates from the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the US, after breast, lung, and prostate cancers. But, more patients die of colon cancer than either breast or prostate cancer. That is a disappointing statistic, because colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Unlike many other cancers, there is an easy way to screen for colon cancer. Colonoscopy is readily available and effective. Large, national studies have shown that colonoscopy reduces an individual’s risk of dying from colon cancer by nearly 70%.

How does a colonoscopy work?

You, as the patient, devote that one day of your life to eating only clear liquids and drinking a laxative to clear out your system. (The prep continues to be improved by the manufacturers – the taste has been changed and the volume consumed has been reduced. So, those stories from well- meaning friends and relatives about the prep may not be completely true.) Then, you visit your physician for the short procedure, which typically lasts about 30 minutes. The physician inserts a tube that has an attached camera into your rectum, then

22 I Summer 2017

guides it through your large intestine. He or she views your intestine on a large screen, looking for abnormalities. You are sedated during the procedure to keep you comfortable. You do not feel the tube traveling through your intestine. Colonoscopy is valuable because colon cancer is a slow growing tumor. Colon cancer is typically (but not always) caused by abnormal growths called polyps, or adenomas, that develop very gradually over time to become cancerous. During the colonoscopy, the physician will look for and remove polyps. By removing polyps early, the risk of developing cancer is reduced. Without colonoscopy, the polyps continue to grow, abnormal cells continue to change, and cancer may develop. After the procedure, you will typically need 30 minutes or so to recover from the sedation. You will go home shortly after the procedure feeling well, although you may be a little tired. You can return to eating normal foods immediately. You may want to start with a light meal, and then gradually add other foods as the day progresses.

Individuals who develop colon cancer are faced with the possibilities of surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy, depending on how far the cancer has

progressed when it is diagnosed. Isn’t that one day for a colonoscopy worth the attempt to prevent what could be many days spent battling colon cancer?

No one looks forward to having a colonoscopy, but I want to thank all of the members of your staff and the physicians for being so professional and pleasant. – Maureen W.

Esophageal Cancer – Are You at Risk? Although esophageal cancer is still relatively rare compared to other cancers, there has been a staggering 600% increase in the disease over the last three decades. The number of people diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and the number of deaths from the disease, have increased more rapidly than any other gastrointestinal tumor. Esophageal cancer is one of the most deadly cancers. Only 18% of patients diagnosed live 5 years, as many cases are diagnosed after the disease has spread. The dramatic increase in esophageal cancer has been linked to the increased incidence of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). If you have been diagnosed with GERD, keep reading…

Monitoring is done by performing an endoscopy. An endoscopy is a quick, 20 minute procedure. During an endoscopy the physician passes a flexible tube into the patient’s esophagus. He or she takes samples of cells that are studied in the laboratory to determine if there are any abnormalities in the cells. If Barrett’s esophagus is diagnosed, the physician will implement a patient-specific surveillance plan to watch for other cellular changes that could indicate a progression to esophageal cancer.

The esophagus is a tube that connects the throat to the stomach. There are two types of esophageal cancer – squamous cell and adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell is normally seen in the middle of the esophagus, and is associated with smoking and alcohol use. Adenocarcinoma typically occurs in the lower esophagus, closer to the stomach, is associated with GERD, and is the more common of the two types of esophageal cancer in the U.S. When individuals have reflux, acid from the stomach enters the esophagus. Over time, the stomach acid changes cells in the lining of the esophagus. This condition is called Barrett’s esophagus. When Barrett’s esophagus is left untreated, the risk of developing esophageal cancer is increased 40-50x. However, if detected early, Barrett’s esophagus can be treated.

What can you do to limit your risk of developing esophageal cancer? • First, watch your weight. GERD occurs 50% more often in overweight patients. • Second, don’t ignore symptoms of heartburn or reflux. It is important to both treat these symptoms, as well as ensure routine surveillance, to identify damage to your esophagus early. • Third, take medication prescribed by your physician as he or she directs. Do not change the dose, decrease frequency of taking the medication, or stop the medication without consulting your physician. Although you may no longer feel the heartburn or reflux, there may still be a negative effect of stomach acid impacting the cells of your esophagus. • Fourth, watch for symptoms that may indicate a change in your condition. If you experience difficulty swallowing, feel food stuck in your throat or chest, choke on food, have unintentional weight loss, worsening heartburn,

Gastroenterologists periodically monitor patients with GERD to watch for the cellular changes of Barrett’s esophagus.

This formal surveillance is critically important, even if the patient has no symptoms. A lack of symptoms doesn’t mean no damage is occurring. The esophagus may get used to the reflux, and, as a result, discomfort lessens or disappears entirely.

coughing, hoarseness, or loss of appetite schedule a visit with your physician. The bottom line: • Increased weight may result in GERD • Reflux from GERD may result in Barrett’s esophagus • Although rare, Barrett’s esophagus may lead to esophageal cancer • Esophageal cancer diagnosed at later stages has a high rate of death

But, GERD can be controlled with medication, and both Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer can be detected early with routine monitoring. If you are interested in learning more about your risk, our physicians at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates have many years of combined experience diagnosing and treating GERD and Barrett’s esophagus. We are available to answer questions about your particular situation.

HEARTBURN You don’t have to live with it Now you can enjoy permanent relief from the pain of acid reflux, gas, or bloating. The first step is discovering why you have it. 1) Do I have GERD? Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is chronic acid reflux, the result of stomach acids flowing back up into your esophagus. A medical exam is required to determine if your heartburn is the result of GERD. 2) What are the symptoms of GERD? - Chronic heartburn - Heartburn that disturbs your sleep - A sour taste in your mouth - A burning sensation in your esophagus - Excessive belching - Hoarseness, voice changes or dry cough - Chest Pain 3) How do you diagnose the cause of my heartburn? Our board certified gastroenterologists offer the most advanced tests to assess gastrointestinal conditions and determine the cause of your heartburn.

We also look for esophageal ulcers and the narrowing of the esophagus (stricture). 5) How can I learn more? Walgreens Study Demonstrates Pharmacy Interventions Can Help Improve Adherence for Medicare Part D Patients A recent Walgreens study of pharmacy patients enrolled in Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D), found that patients who were late to refill prescriptions and who received reminder calls from local Walgreens pharmacists, demonstrated nearly 23 percent greater adherence within the first 14 days of the expected refill date. Those receiving late-to-refill (LTR ) reminder calls also had greater adherence rates over a one-year period. Results of the study were recently published online in Patient Preference & Adherence.[1] “Improving medication adherence is critical to controlling most medical conditions – and for many medical conditions, enhancing adherence can also reduce hospitalizations and related medical costs,” said Harry Leider, M.D., chief medical officer, Walgreens. “This research provides further evidence of the positive impact we can have through targeted initiatives, such as the lateto-refill program, to help make our patients healthier and happier.” The study shows that for Medicare Part D patients who exhibited non-adherent behavior – defined as not refilling at least three days prior to an expected refill date – an LTR reminder call increased the number

of adherent patients by approximately 3 percent. This incremental improvement in patient adherence can serve to benefit Medicare Part D plans, and help improve star ratings and their associated cost savings.

fter surgery, severe injury or any lengthy hospitalization, most people hope to head back home and resume their busy lives. Sometimes, however, transitional rehabilitation care is needed to help recover and regain strength. Perhaps your doctor has already advised you that he or she may want you to receive physical, occupational, speech or vital stem therapies after surgery. Whether you’re looking for increased mobility after a joint replacement or in need of some extra medical attention after a prolonged illness, you’ll want a professional, yet caring, facility that can fully address your individual recovery goals.

PLAN AHEAD

If possible, do your homework and arrange to visit the rehabilitation facility you’re considering in advance of your hospitalization. Talk to the staff, tour the therapy room, examine the equipment and chat with other patients. Therapists should be skilled, licensed experts who can tailor specific modalities to your individual recovery needs. Ask questions. Do they offer appropriate hours per day of therapy? How many times a week? How about weekends? The amount and duration of therapy required will also depend on your overall health before and after surgery. What are the staffing levels at the facility and how many are registered nurses? What additional medical staff is available?

DISCHARGE PLANNERS CAN HELP

If your therapy is on an inpatient basis, look for a facility that will address both physical and emotional needs. Food is important! A chef on the premises can mean the difference between basic “hospital food” and more appetizing offerings. Special dietary requirements should be easy menu options. Other small amenities that can make a big difference include Wi-Fi for you and your visitors, televisions and even nicely landscaped grounds so that, weather permitting, you can get a breath of fresh air and enjoy the

If an emergency hospitalization didn’t allow time for prudent research, you can still rely on your hospital discharge planner or social worker to give you rehabilitation program options, with your insurance in mind. A large part of this professional’s job is to give you and your family choices about area locations where you’ll receive the kind of transitional care you need, from basic physical and occupational therapy on high-tech equipment to special therapies to assist with more complex medical issues.

The HTA techniques restore harmony and balance to the animal’s energy system while providing physical, emotional, mental, and instinctual stability. Stabilizing the energy system allows the natural succession of the immune system, which encourages the healing process and promotes well-being. BENEFITS: HTA techniques benefit our animals in many ways:

• Helps animals understand appropriate behavior • Build the animal-human bond • Reduce stress and anxiety • Support animals through injuries, illnesses, physical and emotional trauma, and abuse. • Build a solid support system for cancer patients • Develop confidence for training and competition • Support animals during the end-of-life transition HTA works as a cooperative adjunct with traditional veterinary medicine to provide the very best health care for our animals. HTA Practitioners work in conjunction with any veterinary diagnosed and prescribed treatment program. As a cooperative application, HTA strives to bridge holistic animal health care with traditional veterinary science and interventions. Health & Medicine ROSEMARY BAUGHMAN LCSW, CADC, EAGALA CERTIFIED

Working in the behavioral health field for over 20 years I have had the pleasure of joining many on their journey to healing and recovery. I have had the pleasure of working with a variety of populations including, addictions recovery, adult day care, prison systems, child crisis, veterans and most recently Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Personal Development. Watching my daughter since age 2 grow and change as she experienced horses, I saw the healing power and knew there had to be a way to incorporate this into my mental health practice. In early 2012 I went with my co-facilitator, equine specialist, Linda Muncy off to training in the EAGALA model and Courageous Hearts was born! We invite you to join our experienced teams on our peaceful farm where we can explore your concerns and goals in a relaxed atmosphere. Our passion is assisting individuals and families achieve their personal goals as we explore them together and find the best solution for you! Our facility is located in a nontraditional setting on a local farm, which provides an array of opportunities for self-exploration.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Personal Development (EAP) EAP is Professional Therapy! EAP is a team approach that includes a qualified mental health professional, an experienced equine specialist, and horses working with you to successfully reach your treatment or learning goals!

EAP is for Everyone! Individuals, families, groups of all ages. EAP provides powerful opportunities to get to the heart of issues and leads to healthier communication, improved relationships, hope and healing for participants. EAP is for Any Issue: Addictions, trauma, ADHD, anxiety, social, behavioral relationship concerns and more. EAP can help participants find meaningful, lasting solutions in a relaxed, nontraditional environment. EAP is Grounded and engaging! EAP as practiced at Courageous Hearts is grounded, meaning ALL

activities are competed on the ground. (no riding) Horses are intuitive, nonjudgmental, and honest! They provide vast opportunities for symbolic learning. No horse knowledge needed! EAP is Experiential: Participants learn about themselves and others by engaging in activities with horses, and then discussing (processing) thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, and patterns. The horse’s responses provide the treatment team with valuable information that brings awareness to current patterns and motivates change to new, more effective ones. Facilitators are present to provide opportunities and bring consciousness to the lessons being learned.

Bypassing the Corporate Ladder By: Luke Kennedy I was lucky enough to grow up in a well educated, affluent family that had the ability to afford me every opportunity parents could want for their child. I went to a prestigious private school, participated in sports, and extracurricular activates. I had great friends and managed to stick to the principles my parents had brought me up to believe in such as hard work, honesty, Integrity, and self sufficiency, effectively keeping me out of harm’s way and trouble. When it was time to go to college, I was glad to go. I had been accepted to a prestigious school In Boston that I was excited about, and felt that it was time to stand on my own two feet and start carving my own way in the world. College accomplished for me what any realistic expectations could hope for: the ability to think analytically and express myself appropriately. However, the reason I chose my school, and the reason most people I know went to college, was not for these rather humble aspirations. I was career focused and wanted college to be my ticket into an amusement park of opportunity. What I found was my analytical mind saying, “You’ve got a $120,000 education. What now, hot shot?”

Although I had a good experience at college, I wasn’t an academic at heart and knew that spending another $100,000 for post grad was not for me unless absolutely necessary. Of course it was time to get a job, but where? I started contacting all the advertising companies I had been studying over the past four years and managed to land a handful of interviews. It became quite clear that nobody was hiring, and that the whole industry was slow enough to grant interviews as a way of distracting themselves from the fact that they didn’t have enough work to do either. The offers I did get would have given “education investment” a return in about 6 years as long as I didn’t need to pay rent or eat. We all have to start somewhere, but I refused to believe that my value to the professional world was within $5.000 of minimum wage. “Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know,” and that was certainly true with me. My mom had worked for a guy named Bob who had started a woman’s focused educational newspaper out of Las Vegas 31 years ago, and he was trying to get one started in Boston. My mom told him my position and soon enough I was meeting the President of The County Woman Newspapers. He has trained over 370 women across the country to publish the format he invented and told me that fear was the only thing to stop me from doing it, too. Bob has been in educational publishing since 1969. The more I found out about it, the more confident I became. Not a single paper using his format, formula, con-

cepts, marketing and sales techniques, trade secrets and business plan of the Sussex County Women’s Journal ever went out of business and more to the point, my first year gross was $86,000 plus. I complained that I didn’t have any background in publishing and he told me that he had never trained anybody with a publishing background. So with a little help from my family I got the money together for the initial down payment and soon I was getting all the “real world” training I needed to run my own newspaper. Training took about a week and is continual, you never feel vulnerable. With several other first time entrepreneurs, I learned everything that can be taught about the County Woman’s Newspaper. By the end of the week I knew how to operate a women’s newspaper, sell advertising, and manage distribution. It was all very fast, scary, and exciting, and before I knew it, I was scheduled to print my first “sample” run of newspapers back in Boston. I followed my training, called local contributors, and scheduled appointments to meet with professionals in industries proven to have strong track records with our format. By the time the first issue was printed, I had $24,000 in advertising sales. Within the first 2 years I had taken about 10 weeks of vacation and grossed over $175.000. I now run two papers and estimate their total sale value around $450.000. When I do sell these papers I can go wherever I want to go and do it all over again. Sometimes I daydream about what my next job interview will be like (if I ever want

one), and I’ve decided it will probably be significantly different than my last one. If I’m going to ever get on the corporate ladder, there’s no way I’m starting on the bottom. In fact, I’ve virtually created my own ladder. There are a lot of perks doing what I do, but it’s certainly not all fun and games. A lot of it is real work. Still, any job worth having is hard work, and more to the point, most jobs not worth having are hard work, too. At least I like what I do, and feel confident in calling myself a success only 2 years out of college. I was lucky to know Bob. There’s no way around it. But most people who can relate to where I was 2 years ago don’t know Bob. I like to think that America can still be about what you know rather than who you know, which is why I’m writing this article. I’m a testament to the fact that everyone just needs the right break, so hopefully anybody reading this now knows of one. There are lots of counties still available, so if you would like to know more about publishing our trademarked and copyrighted newspaper in your area, call Bob at l-800-99-EDUCATE. “CHANGE YOUR LIFE THIS YEAR” Check out a few of our websites to see what fully developed women’s newspapers look like.

“Shasta Shutterbug” Has Arrived!

BY: MIKE BAKER I always like to do things with my photography just a little different or something more my way. My “Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece, Ashley, had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar style vehicle. I initially spotted this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the idea of buying it. After I had seen some ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta.” I was sure it was already sold. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many “camper photo booths” out there. I never realized how big photo booths are becoming. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and started noticing the appeal. I figured photo booths would be more of a short-term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular. So this was my winter project! So ideas started rolling through my mind. I had my daughter, Courtney, listen to my ideas. Not good. Seems like she had better ideas then I did. Most 21 year olds know more about what attracts the younger crowds. She’s the designer, I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did. She was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. One never knows what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some walls and floors from 47 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood floor. It is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside, a photo booth and seating. Sorry no room for rest rooms. After Courtney placed it on Facebook, it was booked instantly the next day for 2 bookings. It was an instant hit at the 2016 Heart Ball in Dover. We also made a 2 day appearance at the Dover International Speedway on the recent race weekend. We have gotten many bookings already for weddings, gala events and other outdoor events. We also have the standard photo booth, but I think this one has gotten much attention. After all, this is the first one in the First State!

It’s that time of the year again, when millions of Americans hit the road for vacations and getaways … all headed to our beaches. Ok, maybe not all of them; it just seems that when you’re stuck on Rt 26 or Rt 1 on a Friday afternoon in the middle of summer! Besides the everyday hassle of summertime traffic though, did you know there’s another concern for vacationers during these summer months? Information provided by the Insurance Information Institute shows it is no accident that the majority of over 1.3 million home burglaries occur in July and August. Luckily, experts state that 90 percent of all break-ins could be avoided by following some basic rules. Since burglars look for telltale signs that a home is unoccupied, avoiding them is the key to helping to keep your home safe year-round, whether you’re home or not. Putting safety first There are basic steps you can take to enhance home security and safety when your home is unoccupied: • Unplug appliances (other than refrigerator and freezer) that are not going to be set on timers. Do a last minute check of the oven, stove, iron, coffee pot and any other small appliances in your home. • Check all thermostats and reset cooling or heating limits to save money. However, leave the air conditioner set so that it will run during the day. This creates the illusion that someone is at home. To be cautious, consider a pre-trip performance tune-up of these units. • Set the water heater on the lowest setting allowed. Depending on how long you will be gone, turn off water to the toilets, dish washer and clothes washer. Doing the obvious • Unattended mail and newspapers are a dead giveaway of an empty home. You should stop these services temporarily, or have a friend or neighbor pick up these items for you. • Have someone keep the lawn looking neat and trim all shrubs away from the house. • Light the interior with timers. • Let shades and blinds stay open as if you are at home. • Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to keep an eye on the house. Just a few logical precautions for home security and safety will greatly decrease the probability of unwanted visitors while you are gone. Use these tips when you go on vacation this summer and if you take long trips over the winter, too. As always, at Custom Mechanical we are happy to answer any questions you may have. Contact us about any of your electrical, heating, cooling, carpentry, plumbing and home performance related issues - on the phone, in person, via e-mail … even on Facebook! Our Retail Store offers parts and supplies as well as answers to your product or pricing queries. Extend your living space -

add a sunroom or enclose your porch! Many homeowners are familiar with the popular sunroom additions on the market today, and those who have purchased one enjoy them for family gatherings or evening relaxation. They also have a high return on investment. However did you know that existing screen porches can be enclosed as well? Now is the right time for you to think about this project, and Patio Systems Inc., of Lewes, Delaware, is here to help you design a room that you will love! Many of today’s homes have decks or are now often being built with screen porches as a standard feature. Exposed to the elements, decks and patios are often simply too hot or too cold to use much of the year. Screen porches offer shade and some bug protection; but, summer heat, dirt, rain, and winter cold with snow and ice again restrict comfortable usage to a short while out of the year. Studies and testimonials indicate that a sunroom addition, or conversion of an existing porch, creates a space that is very likely to become the most enjoyed and well used room in the house. Sunrooms and porches maximize the seasons so you can enjoy your back yard and view, in addition to giving extra living space we could all use. Today, enclosures are more sophisticated in terms of thermal efficiency and ultraviolet protection. The building industry is strongly leaning toward pre-fabricated modular enclosure systems. Sunspace Modular Enclosures, of Toronto, Canada, uses modern equipment and techniques, for a superior product. Product are manufactured indoors in a controlled environment. Because they are panelized, jobsite work is greatly reduced for a quick

The County Woman’s Journal

installation. Patio Systems wants to eliminate the stress and mess of a stick framed project at your home. As the exclusive Sunspace dealer in this area, we are proud to offer this line of vinyl and aluminum sunrooms. While all factory made sunrooms offer a degree of standardized quality control, not all are the best product for your money. Inexpensive aluminum screen or glass enclosures conduct heat and cold. They finish can also scratch or the kick-panels may dent easily. Better rooms with aluminum structure are now being built by many fabricators using vinyl clad insulated panels and powder coat finishes (like a car) for added durability. The best have thermally broken wall mullions, insulated foam core walls and can be purchased with insulated UV blocking glass. Some vinyl clad sunroom products on the market tend to be expensive with bulky frames. The vinyl is not structural and must have aluminum internal support. These rooms are similar to “stick building” and must be assembled from parts one piece at a time on site. This places the quality control in the hands of the installer and workmanship can vary. Sunspace, North America’s fastest growing sunroom and window company, has made it easy to select from their state of the art product line. Patio Systems can offer residential hybrid enclosures made with aluminum and vinyl products. You can choose a custom glass slider system, with screen, or a folding horizontal glass enclosure with retractable screen. Sunspace has a superior 4-track vinyl-pane enclosure

system, a screen only room, and manufacture traditional aluminum or glass railings, patio covers and a new acrylic roof system. With many models to choose from, these projects are priced to offer so much more for your money than other brands, with three or

four season designs. All systems are produced at Sunspace Modular Enclosures expanded 100,000 square foot facility. They can be built from the ground up, on an existing deck or installed into your existing porch. As a remodeling specialist for 36 years, Ron Simmons’ mission is to offer top quality products that can be quickly installed, at competitive prices. Free in-home consultations are without obligation or high pressure tactics. You may also visit our new showroom in Lewes to look at all the sunroom and window options. Blinds, Shades and Child Safety……

Do you remember all the news stories, a couple years ago, concerning child safety and window coverings? The subject sticks out in my mind obviously because it is related to my work and because I have small children. The concern was mostly over mail order and or stock items that were bought off a shelf and installed, usually, by the homeowner. There were tragedies, huge recalls and lawsuits but fortunately the custom window covering trade was not really involved. I would say that the overall higher quality of product and the experienced sales and installation that comes with a custom retailer helped to keep the trade uninvolved however the custom window covering community definitely took notice and many positive changes have taken place. There is much more awareness about the subject compared to a couple of years ago and that in its self is very helpful but the industry has been very proactive in making their products more child safe as well. On the awareness side of things, it is good to note that there are many products out there that have been around for a long time like shutters and draperies that already are or can be made without child safety’s #1 enemy which is strings. Draperies, when set up to traverse by hand, present no problems for toddlers or even pets who like them because they can easily move the fabric aside to leave wet nose marks on the glass. Shutters are another great choice. They are naturally string free, simple to use, even for children, and are one of the best insulators against both heat and cold. With their timeless look and classic feel they a great child safe choice in window coverings. One way that the industry is changing to become more child safe is the introduction of cordless control into a wider variety of products. Cordless roller shades and cordless honeycomb shades have been around for a while but lately we are seeing the industry really improving and trying to mainstream the option. The string free lift systems are getting better and more reliable plus now we are seeing the option more and more on roman shades and wood and faux wood blinds which was mostly an unavailable option in years past on these popular window coverings. Window covering manufacturers are also making improvements on shades and blinds that do have strings with breakaway mechanisms that will separate when too much stress is applied and they have made it so that small children can’t get their heads between the back of the shade and the strings found there on roman style shades. These are two very important changes. Next time you have a window covering need, please give us a call and let us help you make choices that are safer for your children and pets while improving the look and efficiency of your home.

TERMITE & PEST SOLUTIONS Born and raised on the Eastern Shore, Service is the backbone of my business . -Dean Bennett, Because Local Matters Just like you, my day starts right here; I’ve been in the pest control business for almost 24 years but I’ve been a local to these shores all my life...born and raised. Growing up here has shaped my life and how I do business. It’s why family and commitment come first, and why service and responsibility are part of every job I do. And with every job, it’s important you know I’m only ever a phone call away. The same goes for our technicians. Each one is professionally trained and state certified and that’s important. But just as important to me is that each one treats you and your home with respect, courtesy and professionalism. In fact, we treat your home like our home because in a way, it is. So no matter what your pest control need is, we can help because we are your true, local pest control service team: residential or commercial, builder, realtor or property manager...mom or dad. We’re here when you need us because we’re here all the time.

Testimonials The Milford Public Library being a public building for all, we were experiencing many issues with cockroaches, called Bennett’s , they responded to us with their expertise and professional knowledge and staff to assist us to eliminate our issues. A few months later after signing contracts with them, we experienced a bed bug problem, immediately they were finding a solution, Dean Bennett spent many hours researching how to handle this problem in a library where the heat treatment could not be used and within days had our situation under control and found a maintenance program for regular prevention. Dean, and all Bennett employees are professional, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. Recently I experienced an issue with bed bugs. I called around to several different pest companies in Baltimore, MD and I came across Bennett Termite & Pest Solutions. I spoke with Bruce for over 40 minutes, he answered every single question I had. He was very informative and detailed about the process not missing a beat. The next day I told him I wanted to hire them for my treatment he did a conference call with himself and Dean(Owner) and there after Vinnie and Dean came out a few days later and did the heat treatment. Very professional, informative, fast and efficient. I work for a housing office in Baltimore and we plan on using this company for some of our client’s needs. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone. It’s worth every dime and you will have a peace of mind bug free.

Murphy Beds: A Great Addition at the Beach! Many of us remember the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy gets trapped in a Murphy bed! Those days are long gone with modern Murphy bed designs but the advantages of the wall bed remain. Being at the beach, we all get a lot of company but real estate is expensive. We need a way to dual-purpose our rooms without sacrificing comfort for our guests or styling for our décor. The Murphy Wall Bed offered by Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach offers a great solution. We custom design the bed in twin, double, or queen size with side storage and decorative panels to enhance your room. We also offer a library style that hides the bed with sliding bookshelves and lighting for reading and accent. Avoid the discomfort for your guests of foldout couches while enjoying the benefits of reclaiming the guest room in your home. A Murphy bed instead of a standard queen bed will save 30 square feet of floor space when the bed is closed! Use that found space for a home office, play room, craft room, whatever you like by calling your Tailored Living Organizational Specialist to design a Murphy bed for your home.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2017? Work Smarter? Take up a new hobby? Get your kids ready faster?

WE CAN GET YOU ORGANIZED!

A custom Murphy bed installed in Bethany Beach! Bill and Janis Nickerson opened Tailored Living Serving Rehoboth Beach in early 2014. Janis is a Georgetown native. This move completes a commitment Bill made 20 years ago to “retire” to Sussex County. The Tailored Living franchise allows Bill to pursue two of his passions of woodworking and entrepreneurship. It has been an exciting second year completing many pantries, garages, home offices, Murphy beds, and closets in and around DelMarVa. Let us design a solution for you!

Testimonial We have enjoyed the fine services of Tailored Living. Bill and his staff arrived on time and completed the job beautifully with no mess left behind. Our garage floor and cabinets make life so much easier, and when it rains on our outdoor parties, it is a comfortable retreat. - Barbara, Milford I’m really glad I selected Tailored Living and Bill Nickerson to design and build my two master bedroom closets. The process was easy and Bill and his employees did an excellent job. They were prompt, courteous and were very accommodating even when I made changes. I highly recommend Bill and will refer him whenever the opportunity arises. - Joyce, Selbyville

CONFUCIUS CHINESE CUISINE Here Is What Our Customers Say:

Confucius Chinese Restaurant was opened in the spring of 2004 in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Shawn Xiong, the owner, had previously owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmington prior to relocating to the beach area. Since then, Confucius has been named the best Chinese restaurant in the Delaware Today Magazine, Sussex County Woman and favorably mentioned in various newspaper and magazines. Wherever you go, you probably will find a Chinese eatery in every shopping center that offers pretty much the same items such as lo miens and chow miens. The Confucius menu is more focused on items you don’t usually find in those places. The name Confucius lets people know it is Chinese, but with a delicate, refined gourmet restaurant and not a fried rice and egg rolls fast food eatery like a McDonalds. There are different popular dishes for different customers depending on their individual personal taste. If you like spicy food, we offer dishes such as Hot Pepper Chicken, Cumin Beef or Kung Pao Shrimp. If you like fish, Salmon and Black Bean Sauce, Steam Halibut or Crispy Whole Black Sea Bass

are all excellent choices. If you are a first time customer, they encourage you to tell your server what you do or do not like, and they will offer the right recommendation for you. Confucius believes that every customer deserves special attention, if you order something that you don’t like, they encourage you to send it back and try again AT NO COST. They want customers to have a pleasant dining experience. Reservations Are Recommend.

15 of us were in Rehoboth Beach over the past weekend. We had decided to try Confucius based upon friends recommendations and Yelp reviews. They were very accommodating with the reservation and by providing a nice space, including a high chair. We started with assorted appetizers, including spring rolls, various dumplings, beef sticks and the like. Everything was delicious. So on to the main courses. Eggplant in black bean sauce, Singapore Rice Noodles, Hunan Beef, Chicken with Broccoli, 5 Spice Duck (they will warn you it is very hot-we asked for it to be on the mild side, and still had some heat, but we loved it!) Shrimp and scallops with walnuts (my favorite dish of the night), soft shell crab, chicken fries rice and a few other dishes that never made their way to my end of the table. Portions are large, but the food was so delicious we had very little left over. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant - everything is prepared to order, and they deserve all 5 stars. First time here, and it won’t be our last. Loved the seafood hot and sour soup; chicken hot and sour was excellent as well. Spicy shredded duck was under-spiced, but that was my fault for telling server I did not want it too hot, and she bent over backwards to make sure it was mild. Can’t wait to try other menu items. Our server was outstanding. Could not have been more attentive and accommodating. Co-owner Danielle was a pleasure to talk with as well. This is not your typical fast-food Chinese restaurant, so be prepared to pay up for quality. - Glen L., Pikesville, MD Awesomely amazing with a side of extravagance!” - Steven B., Baltimore, MD The food here is beautiful. The setting is elegant. The drinks are fine. It is a nice change from the seafood staples of this beach town. I always over order. It is worth it. - Badhoh G., Rehoboth, Delaware

Dear Donna, This note is extremely belated, but since this is the season for giving thanks I really wanted to write you. Thank you so much for the time you took with Susan and me back in the beginning oft the summer. Buying a bathing suit was almost impossible for both of us, and for the first time, you made it both productive and fun. Then you added alterations and door-to-door delivery, we couldn’t have asked for more. In addition to the service, it was so nice to have such a selection of suits. We have recommended your shop to a number of people from this area who vacation at the Delaware beaches. Thanks again for your help, Happy Thanksgiving! -Carol

Being a female and truly not knowing anything about mechanics always made me feel vulnerable until I started using Joe from ONE STOP! I guarantee as a woman that you will not be taken advantage of. They are fair, they fix the problems and never ever do work that is not needed. With five business vehicles, they have provided me piece of mind. Elizabeth Kapke, The Publisher

Rehoboth Car Wash Celebrates 15 Years in Business

It’s hard to believe 15 years have passed since we have started washing cars here in Rehoboth. Although some days certainly feel much longer than others, the years have blended together into a collection of wonderful relationships, and memories made with our customers. We are so very, very thankful for all of our clients. We look forward to keeping cars clean here, for many years to come. If you are a customer of mine, you likely know I have several team members who have been with me for numerous years. These are the ones who truly make the day to day operation run the way it does. These are people I have laughed with and cried with. We have grown very close and I truly value them. My entire crew plays a role in the quality of our product. I’ve said many times; anybody can put up a building and fill it with equipment, but it’s the crew that makes or

breaks you in the full service car wash business. I owe many thanks to my staff. Not a car would be vacuumed, nor a window be cleaned without them. We have a couple of new features I’d like to tell you about. The most exciting one is the new Unlimited Club. For as little as $20.00 per month, you can wash your car an unlimited number of times. Memberships have a six month minimum and are on a per vehicle basis. We also offer a 3 month Summer Pass, for those who just spend the summer here. Prices vary depending on the wash package selected but are also unlimited, and on a per vehicle basis. Please visit our website, www.rehobothcarwash.com to find out more information about us and our new specials. You can also print coupons that can be used anytime. Here’s to a wonderful summer season! I hope you get to sink your toes in the sand! When that sand gets dragged back into your car, we got you covered! Cheers! Chris Dispoto, Owner/Operator

Health & Medicine Now is the time to take the first step to loving the shape you’re in. It’s easy with Smart Liposuction What is Smart Liposuction? Smart Liposuction (Smart Lipo) is a laser assisted lipolysis procedure. Smart Lipo is performed using a small cannula (or tube) about the size of the tip of a pen which is inserted under the skin. The laser delivers energy directly to the fat cells through the cannula causing the fat cells to rupture. The liquefied fat is then gently suctioned out. New collagen is gradually produced resulting in tissue tightening. What are the advantages of Smart Lipo over conventional liposuction. First, both treatments remove fat but conventional liposuction can leave loose skin. Second, local anesthetic is typically used with Smart Lipo treatments (instead of general anesthesia). You are awake during the procedure, which is a real plus, leading to a faster and easier recovery. Smart Lipo can also create a high definition, sculpted look by defining waistlines on women and abdominal muscles in men. Smart Lipo is a minimally invasive procedure which usually requires only local anesthesia. Some light bruising can occur but you will be able to return to normal activities within a day or two. The best candidates for Smart Lipo are women and men who are not significantly over weight but have accumulated fat deposits such as love handles, flabby upper arms, excess neck or facial fat or fat on the lower torso. A consultation with Dr. Abdollah Malek, M.D. can provide you with more detail and to see if you are a good candidate for Smart Lipo.

leathers your skin, doing its best over time to make you look reptilian. The suns rays alone cause 90% of the visible skin changes we think of as aging: lines, wrinkles, age spots, broken blood vessels, blackheads, blotchy pigmentation and breakdown of collagen and elastin leading to sags and bags. So, What are we going to do? Go ahead, be fabulous! Just go with your own glow! Prevention is always best! When you’re out in the sun be sure to protect your skin. Shade, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, large brim hat, and SPF clothing can go along way helping your natural beauty shine through! Purchasing a Sunscreen can be Tricky! Here are some of the things that I express to our clients to look for when buying a sunscreen. Pay attention to the ingredients not the number (i.e. SPF 90). Look for sunscreen formulated with physical active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Ideally, a good sunscreen will have zinc oxide with a 5% or greater percentage and/or titanium dioxide 7% or greater. Physical active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflect the ultraviolet radiation. Physical ingredients are safe and are not absorbed into the skin. Physical ingredients also protect you from UVA rays and UVB rays. Chemical ingredients such as avobenzone and oxybenzone are just a few examples that absorb into the skin and absorb UV radiation and dissipate it as heat. Chemical ingredients do not provide the best protection from UVA rays which are the most damaging. Also, chemical ingredients can cause skin irritation.

“Lets get serious and talk about the Sun! Tanning is no longer in Style”

Finally, I tell our clients that everyone should wear a sunscreen every day! 365 days! No matter what the weather is outside! No one is immune to skin cancer or sun damage.

Leather belongs on your handbag, not your face. Besides being the major cause of skin cancer, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from both indoor and outdoor exposure ages and
