Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation
In August 1969, nearly half a million people gathered at a farm in upstate New York to hear music. What happened over the next three days, however, was far more than a concert. Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation turns the lens back at the audience, at the swarming, impromptu city that grew up overnight on a few acres of farmland. The teeming mass of humanity, the rain-soaked, starving, tripping, half-a-million strong throng of young people, was a manifestation of the “peace and love” the festival had touted and a validation of the counterculture’s promise to the world. Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve’s literary accomplishments have established her as one of South Dakota’s grandest dames of letters. Since the 1972 publication of her first children’s book, Jimmy Yellow Hawk, she has authored over 30 titles, including the First Americans YA series, which retells the creation stories, cultural ways, and displacement of the Sioux, Cheyenne, Nez Perce and other tribes. In 2016’s Sioux Women: Traditionally Sacred, Driving Hawk Sneve recounts the central role her grandmothers and female elders took in sustaining Sioux values and traditions amidst the intractability of colonial expansion. This fall at the South Dakota Festival of Books, South Dakota Historical Society Press (SDHSP) released a paperback edition of Driving Hawk Sneve’s The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood. Originally published in 2011 by Holiday House, a venerable children’s book press in New York, The Christmas Coat risked going Learn. Dream. Grow.
out-of-print when Random House took over Holiday House’s sales and distribution. The close call is our gain – SDHSP’s reprint includes an intimate letter from Driving Hawk Sneve, now 86 years old, elaborating on childhood memories of Okreek and the Rosebud Reservation depicted in The Christmas Coat. In the book, Driving Hawk Sneve gives a holiday-time snapshot of 1940s life as the tween daughter of Rosebud’s Episcopal priest, James Driving Hawk, and his wife Rose. Trudging the mucky reservation road to a two-room schoolhouse, Virginia longs for a winter coat long enough to shield bare, freezing wrists as “the frigid gale blew sideways across the South Dakota prairie.” Her younger brother Eddie, overshoe sucked off by sleet-snow “gumbo,” pines for cowboy boots. At school, amidst a U.S. map and a portrait of an Indian chief in headdress, Virginia daydreams of the arrival of “Theast boxes” – shipments of used clothing and shoes from New England
congregations. Coveting a luxurious rabbit-fur coat unboxed from the “Theast,” Virginia is reminded by mother Rose that “others need it more than we do.” Virginia looks on dolorously as a haughty classmate drapes herself in the lavish wrap. Driving Hawk Sneve has written extensively about the hand-in-hand nature of lives interlaced in faith traditions in works like That They May Have Life: The Episcopal Church in South Dakota, 1850-1976 (1977) and Completing the Circle (1995). For The Christmas Coat, illustrator Ellen Beier based the book art on photos and descriptions provided by Driving Hawk Sneve, as well as her own research. Save for the color of Virginia’s eyes, (drawn as dark but actually hazel), real-life Virginia says she is very pleased with the results. In a luminous and homey Nativity pageant scene at the guildhall, prayer ties adorn the Christmas tree, boys don headdresses to portray the Wise Men, and baby doll Jesus is swathed in a newborn
star quilt. “We were all Native American children of course, but we were about the third generation of Christians,” says Driving Hawk Sneve. “And so, for those first converts, the Bible stories meant a great deal. And they related it to their own experiences of the way things had been for them.” The star quilt, Driving Hawk Sneve says, based on the Bethlehem Star pattern brought by missionaries, reminded Sioux women of the traditional porcupine quillwork pattern of the Rising Star. “The birth of a child was very important, because it meant the continuation of the tribe. So, it’s a very special symbol to us of the way our lives have been over the years and how we’ve managed to adapt Native American traditions and cultures into Christianity.” Also in the Nativity pageant scene, a portrait of a haloed Jesus hangs behind the Christmas tree. Driving Hawk Sneve’s son, Rev. Paul Sneve, serves Vermillion’s St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where Yanktonai painter Oscar Howe’s striking Indian Christ has adorned the altar since 2007. Does Driving Hawk Sneve recall ever wondering after the religious iconography as a child? “It didn’t matter to me,” she says. “And, of course, it didn’t matter to my father or my parents. I know there are some Native Americans who have problems with Christianity, so they would notice it, ask, ‘Why are we having this
white guy telling us what to do?’ kind of thing. And there has been in the past some conflict in that sort of way. But it didn’t make any difference to my family at all because, in fact, the church was very special in our lives.” Driving Hawk Sneve remembers doing homework at the kitchen table alongside her father as he completed his seminary course. The curriculum, the Ashley house course, was designed specifically for Native American men by Reverend Edward Ashley. A British immigrant, Ashley was appointed in 1885 as “Rural Dean” to Indian Reservations falling within Dakota Territory by Bishop William Hobart Hare. Later named Archdeacon of Niobrara, Ashley supervised Episcopal churches on all the reservations from headquarters in Aberdeen, and, having learned “the Dakota Tongue,” translated The Niobrara Course for Deanery into the Niobrara Woonspe Ookuwe Kin. “We’d have to be very quiet, as our father studied and had to take tests,” recalls Driving Hawk Sneve. “It was difficult for a Native American man to get that kind of an education financially and such a long distance from home. The church provided them with an education and employment – two very difficult things in those days on the reservation, especially during Depression times. My father always was very grateful for that opportunity.” Her father was mentored in
Rosebud by Father Paul H. Barbour and was ordained at the Niobrara Convocation, an important summer event. “The Episcopal Church did this because it was very similar to the annual gatherings the Sioux had for the Sundance,” says Driving Hawk Sneve. “I can remember my grandparents were very pleased and so proud of my father, as we were too. We knew it was very special.” In a light-hearted scene in The Christmas Coat, Driving Hawk’s father and mother waltz clandestinely to WNAX while her father pretends to wear a corset, compliments of “Theast box,” only to be caught by harrumphing Mrs. Red Buffalo. “She was always very disapproving of things, felt strongly how she thought the minister should act,” laughs Driving Hawk Sneve. Her mother’s lesson to put others’ needs before her own remains. “Even today when I have a choice about something, I can still hear her in my mind, saying, ‘She needs it more than you do.’ I tried to instill this ideal in my own children and grandchildren. It’s a difficult value for a child to learn.” Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve will be on In the Moment with Lori Walsh Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 11am/10 MT. Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve reads from The Christmas Coat at “A Christmas Collection: Songs & Stories to Celebrate the Season,” a fundraiser in support of OneHeart, a campus for people transitioning from addiction and homelessness, Dec. 20 and Dec. 21 at the Performing Arts Center in Rapid City. The Ornament of the World
La Convivencia: When Muslims, Christians and Jews Shared a Vibrant Culture
In today’s world, when Christianity, Judaism and Islam often seem more inclined to violent conflict rather than peaceful cooperation, few remember the period when the three monotheistic faiths lived together in relatively harmonious, mutually enriching cultures. The Ornament of the World explores a story from the past that is especially relevant today: a remarkable time in medieval Spain when Muslims, Christians, and Jews forged a common cultural identity that frequently transcended their religious differences. From 711, when Muslim armies swept across the Mediterranean, until 1492, when Christian power was consolidated under King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, the era lasted almost 800 years. During this period, known as La Convivencia, or “the coexistence,” the intermingling of these three groups led to a vibrant shared culture of arts, architecture, science, music, and letters, raising Spain to dazzling heights of glory and power. A fascinating journey through the cities at the center of the story — Cordoba, Seville, Toledo, and Granada — the film reveals what made this rare and fruitful collaboration possible, and what ultimately tore it apart. Explore the complexities and contradictions of this misunderstood era through a series of portraits of major figures. With stories as unexpected as they are riveting, they include 10

Andalusian music reached new heights under the Taifa Kingdoms. These three contemporary musicians keep that tradition alive. They play the Muwashshaha, a form of music sung in Arabic.
Jewish and Christian thinkers writing in Arabic; Muslim conquerors building empires where Judaism and Christianity flourish; and a variety of poets, philosophers and religious leaders who helped define our ideas about religion, philosophy and human nature, asking questions that we continue to ask today. Filmed on location, The Ornament of the World highlights stunning architectural wonders such as the Great Mosque of Cordoba, medieval synagogues in Toledo, the Alcazar in Seville, and the Alhambra in Granada. Changing little over the centuries, the historical areas of these cities — with their cobbled streets, ancient mosques and Toledo, Spain.
tiny synagogues — bear powerful witness to the people who constructed them. Eight hundred years after Muslim armies first invaded Spain, the period of La Convivencia drew to a painful, prolonged and bloody close. By the early 16th century, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella forced both Jews and Muslims to convert to Christianity, leave Spain, or be slaughtered. It was an ending so traumatic that it has obscured the story of a time and place where Muslims, Jews and Christians created a common culture, one whose legacy still continues today. At one time, nearly every South Dakota town of any size had a Masonic Temple, a building built by and for members of the Freemasons, one of the oldest fraternal organizations in the world. Two buildings, one in Yankton and the other in Deadwood, are uniquely historic and inordinately grand.
Paddlefish on the Missouri
The American Paddlefish is a strange and ancient-looking beast native to the Mississippi River Basin, which includes the Missouri River and its tributaries. Paddlefish are not uncommon, but due to overfishing and habitatchange, the species enjoy a protected status. In South Dakota, anglers and archers may legally catch paddlefish during only three month-long seasons per year. In October, paddlefish are harvested in the Missouri River
below Gavins Point Dam, the southernmost of the big Missouri dams. Each October, a limited number of specially licensed anglers congregate below Gavins Point to test their luck and skill at snagging a paddlefish in the fastflowing tailwaters below the dam. Paddlefish eat only zooplankton, so traditional hook-and-bait fishing won’t bring them in. “Snaggers,” using heavy lines and treble hooks, may keep only one paddlefish per season and the fish must meet size restrictions set by South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks. Paddlefish are among the largest fish in the Missouri River. A lucky snag could yield a fish of well over fifty pounds. Take a rare look inside Freemasonry and paddle fish angling, in South Dakota at SDPB.org/ImagesOfThePast.

When Naomi Kutin, an Orthodox Jewish girl from New Jersey, broke a world powerlifting record at the age of ten – lifting 215 pounds when she herself weighed only 97 pounds – she quickly became a media sensation, earning the nickname “Supergirl.” This intimate portrait follows her unique comingof-age story as she fights to hold on to her title while navigating the perils of adolescence — from strict religious obligations to cyberbullying to health issues that could jeopardize her future in powerlifting. Supergirl follows Naomi -- from age 11, through her Bat Mitzvah at 12, and on up to age 14 -- and her family through training and powerlifting events as well as documenting their strong faith and involvement in the Orthodox community. Two-and-a-half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, The Buddha, an Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment while he sat under a large, shapely fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or an emissary on Earth, but a human being who – in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering – had found a kind of serenity that others could find too. Richard Gere narrates.

Sanford Lab Announces 2019 CORES Award
After many years in the classroom, Steven Rokusek brought his passion for science to SDPB, where, as education specialist, he develops resource materials, provides in-service training at schools and creates high-energy demonstrations. The “Science Steve” alter ego emerged over 10 years ago, when the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) launched Neutrino Day in Lead. Now Rokusek performs at science festivals and events across the state and has been a mainstay at every Neutrino Day since its inception. His lively demonstrations animate the laws of physics, chemistry, anatomy and more, to inspire future
scientists and delight audiences of all ages. “I love seeing and hearing the reaction of the audience when they experience a scientific phenomenon for the first time,” Rokusek says. “Science truly is amazing and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to share my love of science with South Dakotans.” Rokusek’s commitment to science education has earned him many accolades. This year, Sanford Lab is presenting him with the 2019 CORES Award (Communication OutReach Experiences in Science). The CORES Award is given annually to an individual, group, business or organization that
supports Communication and OutReach Experiences in Science within the region. The recipient is selected by a committee that takes into consideration ongoing support of science education— whether through sponsorships or service—a passion for science education, and a visible commitment to science outreach in the region. “Steve fully embodies the qualities we are seeking,” said Constance Walter, SURF Communications Director. “His passion for science is infectious and his commitment to education is commendable. We are very proud to give this award to such a deserving person.” Congratulations, Science Steve!

Craft in America: Quilts Meet contemporary quilters as we celebrate the role quilts have played in our country’s story. Susan Hudson (Kin Ya’áanii/“Towering House” Clan of the Navajo Nation) has created a new quilt form that incorporates the style of Ledger art into story quilts of Navajo hardship and loss. Minnesota-born Victoria Findlay Wolfe learned to quilt and sew at 4 years old and is now an International Award Winning quilter, fabric designer, teacher, author and lecturer. Michael Cummings embellishes his quilt surfaces with hand embroidery and found objects to tell quilt stories that celebrate Josephine Baker, Harriet Tubman, Langston Hughes, and commemorate African American history. Judith Content is a fiber artist who uses the Japanese dye technique arashi shibori to make silk wall quilts shaped in abstract interpretations of the kimono form. And filmmaker Ken Burns has collected American quilts since the mid-1970s. SDPB1: Friday, Dec. 27, 8pm (7 MT)
