It is 1848, and revolution is breaking out across Europe. In Britain, one woman stands between order and chaos: Queen Victoria. Jenna Coleman returns as the young but fearless monarch, facing a crisis that threatens to end her reign. Continuing the story of Victoria’s rule over the largest empire the world has ever known, Victoria, Season 3 introduces fascinating new historical characters, including Laurence Fox (Inspector Lewis) as the vainglorious Lord Palmerston, who crosses swords with the queen over British foreign policy. Also vexing the queen this season is Kate Fleetwood (Harlots) as Victoria’s devoted but troubled half-sister, Princess Feodora, who seeks refuge at Buckingham Palace due to political unrest back home in Germany. Other new characters include John Sessions (Outlander) as reformist Prime Minister John Russell and Lily Travers (Kingsman) as the beguiling Duchess of Monmouth. Victoria is created, written, and executive produced by Daisy Goodwin. Of this latest season, Goodwin said, “Viewers can expect more drama than ever before in the third series… There’s a suggestion in a letter Albert writes to her… basically they thought that every time she was pregnant she went a bit mad, so there will be a bit of that. There’s a suggestion that she’s not in her right mind, hereditary insanity and all of that.”
Join SDPB for Victoria Season 3 screenings and light refreshments. Costumes encouraged!

South Dakota is home to 13 state parks. It’s little wonder each has a unique story developed as they have been on the traditional lands of Native peoples, the mountain slope sites of gold rushes and the prairies of settlers’ triumphs and travails. This January, SDPB’s new documentary Images of the Past: A Century of South Dakota State Parks tracks the development of South Dakota’s state park system, in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the opening of Custer State Park. It’s been a century since South Dakota’s first state park was established on a large parcel of land featuring forests, rock outcroppings, and grasslands in the southern Black Hills. Custer State Park opened in 1919 and essentially created its own history from then on. Governor and senator Peter Norbeck foresaw economic development and conservation in establishing both a wildlife refuge and a destination for hunters. Twisting and scenic
roads were built through the area’s most rugged terrain, but it was also intended to be a place where people could get out and walk in the singular scenery of the Black Hills. The story of Bear Butte (Lakota: Mato Paha, “Bear Mountain”) can be traced back thousands of years, and the story is still unfolding. People from several Native American tribes come to Bear Butte to dwell for a time in a sacred place and make a spiritual connection.
SDPB Staff Profile: Brian Gevik SDPB’s Brian Gevik is multitalented in the media world. Not only does he research, write, shoot and edit content for the multi-platform series Images of the Past, he helps maintain SDPB’s websites. He’s produced 12 hour and half-hour TV documentaries for SDPB and countless Dakota Life segments and digital shorts. “Well before you hit 30-plus years in TV production and broadcasting, you kind of quit counting,” says Gevik. Born in Sioux Falls and a graduate of Washington High School (“when it was still downtown”) and USD, Gevik has been a videographer and producer for SDPB, KELO and regional media outlets for over 30 years. He started with SDPB’s Digital Services in 2008, working on SDPB’s website and assisting with high school activities coverage. Gevik’s skills and experience evolved with
time and technology. Now a Media Specialist, he contributes in multiple ways across all of SDPB’s broadcast and online platforms. “I’m not a hard news journalist, but I produce TV documentaries, mainly stories about South Dakota history.” He also does voice-overs for SDPB’s radio and TV promotions, as well as for other SDPB docs. “It’s difficult to pick a most memorable moment because I enjoy pretty much everything I get to do at SDPB,” says Gevik. “Every now and again, when I’m on the job, I think about how much fun I’m having. If I had to pick, it’d be the experience of shooting video while biking the Mickelson Trail. The feeling that you are doing the job you were meant to be doing is extremely gratifying.” When he’s not shooting or writing documentaries, Gevik enjoys bicycling, sailing, horseback riding
Sica Hollow (“Sica” pronounced see cha, Lakota for unpleasant, of poor quality, or serious) is a rugged woodland park 15 miles northwest of Sisseton with a rich history and miles of horse-riding and hiking trails. Good Earth Park at Blood Run is South Dakota’s most recently established state park. Just southeast of Sioux Falls on the Big Sioux River, it is one of the oldest sites of long-term human habitation in the United States and continues to be a place for traditional and living Indigenous culture. A new state park is being proposed at Little Spearfish Canyon. We’ll explore the area as well as the process required to establish a state park. Photos and historical films will reveal the beginnings of traditions that continue today, from feeding the burros on the Custer State Park wildlife loop road to stopping for a photo at the Needles Eye to hiking the state’s forests and plains. A Century of South Dakota State Parks premieres Thursday, January 3, at 8:30pm (7:30 MT) on SDPB1.

They tried to ban, censor and erase Indian culture from rock and roll history but Native American influence is wrapped into modern music’s DNA. Rumble: Indians Who Rocked the World traces the melodies, rhythms, and beats of traditional Native music as they took different forms across the spectrum of 20th-century American rock. Native Americans such as Robbie Robertson, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Link Wray, Hall of Famer Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Ed Davis, and many more forever changed the trajectory of rock and roll. Their stories are told by some of America’s greatest rock legends who knew them. SDPB1: Monday, January 21, 9pm (8 MT) SDPB2: Wednesday, January 23, 6:30 & 11pm (5:30 & 10 MT)

Kalie Rider watches the sun set behind a natural gas flare near Trenton, ND.
My Country No More
An intimate portrait of a ND community in the rise and fall of the new American oil boom. by Katy Beem In early 2011, Kalie Rider, a 36-year-old dietician from Trenton, ND, felt her rural quality of life disintegrating. Under the siege of North Dakota’s new oil boom, heavy truck traffic, surging man camps and whirlwind industrialization were overtaking the tranquil prairie and farmland in northwest North Dakota where Rider’s family has lived and worked for generations. A train load-out facility for crude oil moved out 100,000 barrels of oil a day, built on land once owned by Rider’s neighbors and family. When the owner lending land to Rider’s country church considered reclaiming the land to sell for an oil refinery, Rider sat stunned in the sanctuary of tiny Trinity Lutheran Church. “It was all so surreal, I felt like I was in a documentary,” says Rider. “Stuff like this always happens to someone else, somewhere else.” Then someone reminded Rider her former pastor’s son was a documentarian. Rider contacted Jeremiah Hammerling, who grew up in Fargo and is now an independent filmmaker in California. Hammerling flew back to his home state to meet with Kalie and other local residents. “I’ve always wanted to make a film about North Dakota,”

says Hammerling. “When people ask, ‘what’s it like growing up in the middle of nowhere?,’ I say, it’s not exactly what you think.’ For this film, our eye was set on asking, what does it look like when a fight over a rural area takes place, especially when all those people have been neighbors for their entire lives and they’ve depended on each other?” Six years in the making, My Country No More, follows Kalie, her rancher brother Jed, farmer Uncle Roger and others as they reflect on the conflict and opportunity before them. They attend strained county commission meetings. Jawlines tense and arms cross as neighbors point to zoning maps and debate progress and development against land owner rights and life-quality issues. Kalie’s Uncle Roger is haunted by regret for selling land originally slated for an ethanol plant, but rezoned for the

load-out facility. The film also tracks Ruben Valdez, a 50-something oil industry worker the film crew met in the Walmart parking lot in Williston, ND. Sleeping in his truck amidst many others doing the same in pursuit of oil field work, Valdez came to North Dakota from the Denver area. Valdez’s first job was general carpentry building worker housing (i.e., man camps) for Mann Energy. Working his way up over three years, Valdez went from pumper, to clean-up crew foreman, to manageroperator of a saltwater disposal well. “It was good while it lasted,” says Valdez. “One year I earned $93,000. Another, it was like $86,000. They were wonderful years.” When the well was sold to White Owl Energy, Valdez was laid off. “I was pretty high-priced, and they were able to

In the spring of 1905, the first group of graduates of Yale’s Forestry School began to arrive in the towns of the West. Nothing could have prepared them for the drought in 1910. Fires broke out continually. In mid-August, fire season hit its peak: in just 36 hours, a firestorm burned more than three million acres and killed at least 78 firefighters. Inspired by Timothy Egan’s best-selling book, The Big Burn provides a cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice. SDPB1: Tuesday, January 22, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Friday, January 25, 8pm (7 MT)

He sees the industry picking up again and says, with his experience, he can be very selective. “Soon the major oil-industry companies will be hiring again and I hope I’ll find a good, reliable job I can hopefully retire on.” But Valdez says he remains in Williston for the quality of life and the people. “You can’t beat the folks here, the slower pace.” Eight years on since Rider initially contacted filmmaker Hammerling, Rider says the “craziness” in the Trenton area has slowed as oil prices have declined and the frenzy of widening roads and constructing storage, loading terminals, and housing has decreased. One irony that has transpired since the oil industry changed the area is Rider’s attitude toward it. “I’ve always loved where I live and feel connected to it,” says Rider. “But to be honest I like 16

Williston now more than my whole time growing up. We have such an interesting diversity of people now. The influx of outsiders has created demand for all the stuff I’m really interested in, like healthier food. But what has happened to the rural landscape has gotten worse. It’s a tradeoff, and not a good one, overall.” When My Country No More was recently screened at a film festival in Missoula, Rider and Valdez spent a lot of time together. “Yeah, we hung out,” says Rider. “A lot of people I know, clients and friends, they’re in the oil field. I co-exist with everybody. It’s not like you can be separate. I think for the most part people understand each other. It’s the influx of money, at the land level, at the neighbor level, that really turns people against each other. My fights, if you can call them that, were not against people coming in. It was against people I’ve known my whole life.”

Dakota Life: Art in South Dakota This month, Dakota Life introduces you to art and artists in South Dakota. We’ll visit the cliff-face canvases of the Southern Black Hills. Archaeologist and Storied Stone: Indian Rock Art of the Black Hills Country author Linea Sundstrom explores the methods, and potential meanings, behind rarely seen, centuries-to-millennia old indigenous rock art. Join us as we venture to Viborg to meet welder and metal sculptor Lynn Peterson. “When I was in high school I saw the shop class, and I thought welding was kind of neat,” says Peterson. “I started doing some welding in school, and it was just like it was natural to me. Some people are musicians, play piano. Welding and working with iron was just always something that was natural for me.” Next, meet Abby Bischoff, a Sioux Falls-based photographer whose images of uninhabited houses throughout South Dakota are compiled in her book Abandoned South Dakota.
And we travel to Faulkton to see the massive mural that graces the Agtegra grain silo in Faulkton. The mural, by Australian artist Guido Van Helten, is one of several projects organized by the Faulkton Area Arts Council and Faulkton community members. An all-new episode of Dakota Life premieres Thursday, Jan. 3, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1. The program rebroadcasts Sunday, Jan. 6, at 1pm (noon MT) on SDPB1.

A New View for SDPB Sweeping aerial views of South Dakota vistas once involved renting time with a plane or helicopter and clearing air space. But thanks to new technology in the form of cameracarrying drones, SDPB can now offer our viewers new views of some of South Dakota’s favorite spaces. SDPB Producer Paul Ebsen led the charge on bringing a drone to SDPB. Commercial drone operators are required to pass a test and possess a license from the FAA and Paul took it upon himself to acquire this license so that SDPB could add a drone camera to its visual arsenal. Paul shared with us some of the details behind that process in this short video. The results are already being seen, with drone footage being featured in a September 2018 Dakota Life on Black Elk Peak and recent drone shoots that will add new views to our 2019 documentaries A Century of South Dakota State Parks and Vanished South Dakota: Towns of Yesterday.

Poetry from Studio 47 debuts on SDPB Radio Poet and Augustana University professor Patrick Hicks hosts Poetry from Studio 47, a new weekly feature during SDPB’s In the Moment that highlights the life and work of poets. Poetry from Studio 47 is recorded at Studio 47, a world-class recording studio at Augustana University. The program is produced by Augustana University Orchestra Conductor Peter Folliard, who also wrote the opening music. The program features a variety of poets but will focus on the poets of the Midwest and Great Plains. “We have a wealth of poetic talent in our state and it will be fun to share it with listeners,” says Hicks. “I think listeners are going to appreciate tuning in. Poems are essentially just little stories, and who doesn’t like a good story?”

Dictator’s Playbook
Revealing portraits of brutality and power. Rich in psychological detail, Dictator’s Playbook provides fresh insight into six brutal men who helped to shape world history. What drove their thirst for domination and control? How did they seize and wield power? What forces rose up against them or resisted them in secret? How did they finally come to the bitter end? Through historical context and analysis, the series explores how these dictators functioned, how they influenced each other, and why they succeeded or failed. And we discover, as different as these men were from each other, all of them followed a series of essential steps, from seizing power to eliminating enemies—an unwritten Dictator’s Playbook.
EPISODE 1: Kim Il Sung
EPISODE 3: Benito Mussolini
Witness Kim Il Sung’s transformation from guerilla fighter to brutal dictator of North Korea. How did he build the most controlled society on Earth and launch a dictatorship that has lasted for three generations?
See why Benito Mussolini was considered a pioneer among 20th century dictators. From undermining judges to indoctrinating children, he forged key tactics for seizing power. He also created fascism, an ideology that would plunge Europe into darkness.

No Cover, No Minimum: Heather Gillis Band from Sioux Falls JazzFest
Heather Gillis at Jazzfest.
Just 23-years old, roots rocker Heather Gillis is a full-spectrum musician: in addition to penning, arranging and singing her own songs, she also plays guitar and lap steel. In 2015, she was drafted by Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks for his touring band. A purveyor of rock, soul, jazz, roots and gospel, Gillis “made a ton of wanna-be guitar players shrug and cry as she ripped three separate solos over the next few tunes, each in a different style. And with a huge smile. AND with a huge upsurge from the crowd after each one.” Music Fest News Catch her fiery performance, recorded live from the 2018 Sioux Falls JazzFest, on SDPB1, Saturday, Jan. 26, 10pm (9 MT).
Minnesota Opera’s Doubt In 2013, the Minnesota Opera produced the world premiere of Doubt, based on John Patrick Shanley’s play and film. “Riveting…” – Minneapolis Star Tribune “Excellent performances…” – New York Times Suspicion ignites a battle of wills at a Catholic school in the Bronx, circa 1964. Charismatic and progressive Father Flynn tries to loosen the stranglehold of strict school customs, fiercely guarded by its iron-fisted principal, Sister Aloysius Beauvier. When the young, innocent Sister James shares with the principal her suspicion that Father Flynn may be abusing the school’s only black student, Sister Aloysius embarks on a personal crusade to find the truth and ruin the priest. With no proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius engages in a battle of wills with Father Flynn in this riveting new work, which poses questions to ponder long after the curtain goes down. Music by Douglas J. Cuomo and libretto by John Patrick Shanley, based on his play and film. SDPB1: Friday, January 25, 9pm (8 MT)

The long-anticipted eighth season of Doc Martin premieres this month. Watch while you can! Because Doc Martin producers Mark Crowdy and Philippa Braithwaite, wife of series star Martin Clunes, have confirmed next season (the ninth) will be the last for the irritable physician. Crowdy and Braithwaite said, “We’ve had the most incredible time making this show that we love and care deeply for, and feel very privileged, We’d like to thank our audience around the world for coming on this great journey with us, and really hope you enjoy these next two seasons and think they’re the best yet.” Meanwhile, the eighth season promises to continue the adventures of Portwenn’s locals, Martin’s onagain, off-again relationship with local school teacher, and, of course, his signature rascibility. An SDPB fan favorite, Doc Martin airs Thursdays at 9pm (8 MT) on SDPB1. 24
