A bounty of roadkill. Car trouble. Swapping corny dad jokes. Pulled over West River for speeding. While scouting and shooting sites in America’s prime fossil country for Prehistoric Road Trip, a 3-part PBS series premiering June 17, Emily Graslie and her documentary crew withstood many quintessential rites of passage proffered by a South Dakota road trip. But Graslie is still freshly incredulous that, in
nine weeks of filming at over 40 locations throughout five states, including South Dakota, the crew endured no weather calamities. Noodling out the logistics of filming, Graslie had prepped her non-South Dakota crew for Mother Earth’s best and worst. “You’re filming in the most climatically unpredictable part of the country,” says Graslie. “You’re talking about freak rainstorms, hailstorms – record-breaking hail! Huge thunder cells. Just the previous year, a tornado picked up a five-ton tractor near Buffalo and dropped it five miles away! I am still shocked we didn’t have a single rain day! We didn’t have to cancel anything.”
Prehistoric Road Trip is Graslie’s pet project, born of meetings with executives at WTTW, Chicago’s PBS member station, who asked Graslie if she’d ever considered making a documentary. “Paleontology in Western South Dakota is the first thing that came out of my mouth,” says Graslie. Born and raised in Rapid City, 30-something Graslie has been Chief Curiosity Correspondent at The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago since 2013. The Field created the position for her after a generous supporter was taken with “The Brain Scoop,” the smart, plucky YouTube series Graslie created as a student studying fine arts and interning for the zoological museum at the University of Montana. Determined to showcase an undervalued and underutilized collection of grizzly bear, badger, and bird specimens dating back as far as the 1890s, Graslie touted the 30,000+ Rocky Mountain vertebrates online, and even dissected a roadkill wolf oncamera, courtesy of the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. “They were pretty in-your-face videos,” says Graslie.

Growing up in Rapid City, Graslie spent much of her childhood on her father’s ranch near Faith. Sue, the largest and best preserved T-Rex who was also wooed to Chicago by The Field Museum, was discovered in 1990 just outside Faith. “My great grandparents homesteaded there,” says Graslie. “I’m not much of a farm girl, but I care a lot about the history of the area, and the ranch has been special to me.” Before she became a science communicator, Graslie practiced landscape painting with her high school art teacher Jeff Gulbransen. At Missoula, she got her BFA in fine art painting. Her senior thesis was an 8x14-foot mural of a massive thunder cell storm moving in over the prairie, playfully titled 20 Miles East of Faith. She’s motivated by the art and science of South Dakota. “I love artists like Andrew Wyeth, who spent 90 years just painting the same three farms. Put that in the same category as Monet and his water lilies or haystacks! That’s dedication to really trying to understand, capture, appreciate, celebrate, the world around you through landscape painting,” says Graslie. “I’ve always tried to understand this relationship between rural parts of the country and how natural climate and weather can have a huge impact
on your livelihood, on your mental and physical well-being, on every aspect of your life. If you’re a rancher and your income is based on selling your cattle at auction once or twice a year and a huge blizzard wipes out your whole herd, then that has negative implications throughout the year.” She says her mural tries to capture the American romance of the middle west mixed with the sense of dread imbued by a T-storm looming in the near distance. “We haven’t found a way to conquer Mother Nature yet,” she says. “So, even before my interest in dinosaurs, paleontology, science, I’ve just been enamored with that part of the country.” Graslie’s mural now hangs in a home in Beverly Hills. Graslie’s aunt, who grew up in Faith, bought the work and made a sure a wall was resized large enough during home renovations to anchor her niece’s tempestuous depiction of South Dakota. Another family tie mooring Graslie to South Dakota is Dakota Granite, the quarry in Milbank founded by Graslie’s maternal great uncle. “That granite is the granite countertops in my mom’s kitchen,” says Graslie. “I’ve eaten countless meals at those granite countertops, thinking about my great uncle. Dakota Granite can be seen in Parliament, in D.C., in amazing buildings around the (continues on p.21)

Simple Justice: Suffrage in South Dakota SDPB’s New Multiplatform Project
This summer, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote in the United States, SDPB honors and commemorates those who fought for women’s suffrage in the U.S., the feminist movement throughout the 20th century, and the stories of modern women who continue to shatter the glass ceiling and transform modern history.
In partnership with PBS and WGBH-Boston, SDPB is producing a documentary, series of radio interviews, and online content to tell the stories of South Dakota’s suffrage activists, those in favor and those opposed. The title of the project, Simple Justice: Suffrage in South American Masters Toni Morrison — Dakota, is based on a quote from Maj. John A. Pickler The Pieces I Am of Faulkton. Pickler was a South Dakota state legislator Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her during the 1880s and later, a U.S. Congressman. Pickler peers and critics on an exploration of the and his wife Alice worked for many years to see suffrage powerful themes she confronted throughout measures proposed and debated. her literary career in this artful and intimate “I have had my convictions since my college days,” meditation that examines the life and work of Maj. Pickler said, “that simple justice demands that the legendary storyteller. American Masters woman should have the ballot, and in this opinion Toni Morrison—The Pieces I Am casts the iconic I am warmly seconded by my wife, who desires to author in a light that readers won’t catch from vote, as I think all sensible women should.” her novels. The Picklers were among dozens of politically SDPB1: Tuesday, June 23, 7pm (6 MT) active individuals from towns and cities across SDPB2: Friday, June 26, 7pm (6 MT) South Dakota. Some worked their entire lives either for or against woman suffrage, but many also worked energetically on other issues of the day, such as prohibition and immigrants’ American Masters Mae West—Dirty Blonde rights. The American SDPB project online at Film Institute named her 15th among the greatest female SDPB.org/TheVoteSD stars of classic American cinema. Artist: Mato Wayuhi + Treehorse, Sioux Falls — Song: “Knots” Sioux Falls-based Wayuhi and guitarist Jacob Lemme score again after NPR selected their 2018 “Wildberry Poptart” as a Tiny Desk Contest standout. Slinky, chill, rap-R&B with smooth horns and synth, “Knots” melds musicians recorded in quarantine from L.A. to Philadelphia, but South Dakota ultimately represents: “Yeah, I’m turnin’ Pine Ridge into Fashion Week/Native Americans are the world’s greatest masterpiece.”

Artist: Kimberly Kaye, Belle Fourche Song: “Sing That Song” Blessed with classic country twang and guts, Kaye presents a softer side with this sweet, slower tune.

We’ll Meet Again: Coming Out 20 20
Learn. Learn.Dream. Dream.Grow. Grow.
Learn the untold story of how tens of thousands of homosexual federal workers were either fired or denied employment in the 1950s, stirring outrage in the gay community and starting an LGBTQ rights movement with an unlikely hero at the forefront. The Lavender Scare documents this period in history and its lasting impact on today’s cultural climate. SDPB2: Tuesday, June 23, 6pm (5 MT) America ReFramed Out in the Silence follows filmmaker Joe Wilson who announces that he is to be wed to another man, and a firestorm of controversy ignites his small Pennsylvania hometown. Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson’s journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it. SDPB2: Tuesday, June 2, 7pm & 11pm (6 & 10 MT); Sunday, June 6, 10pm (9 MT) Living in the Overlap is the improbably true story of two girls growing up in Brooklyn in the 1940s, falling in love in the Midwest, and making a life together in North Carolina. The film includes public and private moments in Lennie and Pearl’s lives using intimate interviews, archival material, and sequences shot during their efforts to defeat North Carolina’s anti-gay marriage amendment. SDPB2: Sunday, June 28, 10:30pm (9:30 MT) Matthew Shepard, the Wyoming teenager who became a national figure after he was beaten and left for dead for being gay in 1998, has inspired plays, documentaries and books. Now he’s the subject of a choral piece, a 100-minute oratorio called Considering Matthew Shepard that explores his life, death and legacy. Conspirare, a choral group based in Austin, Texas, released the debut recording this month. SDPB2: Sunday, June 26, 6pm & 11pm (5 & 10 MT) & Saturday, June 27, 1pm (Noon MT) Fred Martinez was nádleehí, a male-bodied person with a feminine nature, a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. He was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at 16. TwoSpirit Powwow explores the life and death of this boy who was also a girl, and the essentially spiritual nature of gender. SDPB1: Friday, June 12, 9:30pm (8:30 MT) SDPB2: Saturday, June 13, 8:30pm (7:30 MT) & Tuesday, June 23, 8:30pm (7:30 MT) Before the 1970s, being gay in America meant facing widespread discrimination. To come out was to risk everything: family, job and even safety. For two young men growing up in New England, living a life out of the closet was only possible because of the people who helped them open the door. Join Ann Curry as people who first met during the early days of the LGBTQ movement reunite on We’ll Meet Again Coming Out. SDPB2: Tuesday, June 9, 6pm (5 MT)

In preliminary planning sessions with WTTW-Chicago about Prehistoric Road Trip, Graslie says the only fault executives found with her treatment was the scope. To have national appeal, Graslie had to go further and longer. The documentary evolved into a three-part series to include North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, as well as Illinois. Graslie serves as host, writer, executive producer, and has worked very closely editing with co-producer Ally Gimbel. In Western South Dakota, Graslie interviews scientists and educators on-location from the Badlands to the Mammoth Site to Oglala Lakota College. “Being able to return to my home state and
celebrate how special we are has been really important to me personally,” says Graslie. “We don’t often see South Dakota celebrated on the national stage, especially as a place of great scientific accomplishment, which it is. The Museum of Geology at School of Mines and School of Mines in general is an amazing place. It’s the only institution in the country where you can get a master’s degree in paleontology! SDSMT has a relationship with Badlands National Park that precedes the park even before it was established as a national monument. Everywhere we went, we tried to show and celebrate that there’s so much more to this part of the country. I think South Dakotans will hopefully feel a sense of pride in their state and their legacy. And I hope it teaches more people in the state about the land that they’re walking on.”
Prehistoric Road Trip airs June 17, June 24 and July 1 on SDPB1. Sponsored locally by The Mammoth Site and Badlands National Park Conservancy. Original digital content, behindthe-scenes travel journals, and an interactive road trip map at wttw.com/prehistoricroadtrip.

SDPBers Celebrate Milestones
Several long-time SDPB staffers were recently recognized by the SD Bureau of Information Technology and Communications for their years of service to SDPB. says Mike. “And, in Master Control, I got to play the same educational TV shows I watched in grade school. Several were still in blackand-white!”
Amber Anders Continuity Director, 20 years Born and raised in South Sioux City, NE, and hired originally as a Programming Assistant for SDPB-TV, Amber is celebrating 20 years. She’s seen many technical evolutions. “Where to begin? When I first started, we ran on tape, live audio reads, typing labels on typewriters and killing lots of trees. Now we’ve moved to no tapes, digital file, server backups, automation, the cloud and virtual meetings.” Amber’s most memorable SDPB moments are the yearly holiday gatherings. “SDPB has always been more than a job for me. It’s family that supports you and wants to see you succeed. Throughout my professional life here, I’ve tried, failed, learned and grown. This milestone reminds me how far I’ve come and how much more I want to accomplish!”

Michael M. Johnson Senior Studio Engineer, 35 years Growing up in Newell, SD, and attending high school in Polo, SD, where his father was principal, Mike’s first foray into broadcasting was as after-school and weekend DJ with KQKD-AM Redfield. Mike has held many roles at SDPB, including hosting All Things Considered and Jazz Nightly while also working part-time as a TV Master Control Operator. In 1987, he was promoted to Microwave Engineer, where he worked in the field on SDPB’s transmitter sites. He’s been Senior Studio Engineer since 1991. Mike was essential to SDPB’s move from analog to digital. “That was the most dramatic change, from analog to digital, both in the studio and transmitter sites,” says Mike. “Virtually every piece of equipment became obsolete and had to be replaced. Fortunately, equipment has become less expensive, allowing us to do much more local programming than we used to.” Mike recalls the feat of keeping SDPB on the air after newspaper founder Al Neuharth donated money to USD for a building remodel. Mike and other SDPB engineers had to relocate Radio and TV to surplus FEMA trailers without going off-air. “Working for SDPB has been my dream job,”
Kent Osborne Director of Digital, 38 years Raised in Mitchell and a 1986 graduate of USD’s Mass Comm program, Kent started as a production assistant at SDPB during his first year of college, where he “swept the TV studio and ran camera on the weekly public affairs program Conference Call.” “We’re using technology that wasn’t even dreamed of when I started at KUSD,” says Kent. “As a student it was my job to drive from Vermillion to the Sioux Falls airport to pick up video tape recorded at the SD legislature every day. In the winter months with a rearwheel drive panel van. It was a challenge to get the show complete before airtime each night.” “I miss running into George Mickelson in the Capitol elevator, working the state tournaments my kids participated in, and will miss the incredibly truthful, responsible, accountable, visionary, creative people I’ve worked with over the decades. I am thankful for the variety of projects that I’ve been asked to and continue to participate in.”
SDPB Welcomes New Staff Richard Two Bulls, Content Producer Richard has spent most of the last decade reporting for KOTA and KEVN in Rapid City. Born in Rapid City, and an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Richard has covered a variety of topics directly related to Native Americans. One story he is proud of is a narrative on the Native American Arts and Crafts Act, about the importance of buying authentically made arts and crafts from artists whose primary income is from their work. Richard is also very passionate about telling stories that preserve the Lakota culture and art, including stories about full immersion Lakota language preschool programs. Richard has covered a variety of news in Rapid City and the surrounding areas. Richard says, “Rapid City is a unique place to report in because it has a little bit
of everything – from crime and accidents, wildland and structure fires, extreme winter and summer weather and of course the many great people that live there and do many great things in the community.” In 2019, Richard and a co-worker were awarded an Eric Sevareid Award from the Midwest Broadcast Journalist Association for Investigative Small Market Television Award of Merit for a piece called “Sold for Sex: Trapped By Fear.” Due to his father’s law enforcement career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Richard was raised on a variety of different reservations throughout the United States. He spent time in the Navy as a Mass Communication Specialist. “I fell in love with journalism when I joined the Navy,” says Richard. “I always enjoyed SDPB because it has a variety of information,” says Richard.”Also, some of the best TV shows were on SDPB – like the Red Green Show.” Richard, his fiancée Sarana and their 6-year-old son James proudly call the Black Hills their home.
Jordyn Henderson, Content Producer Jordyn began shooting and editing video at Brandon Valley High School, where he graduated and played soccer. Recruited for the sport by Florida Southern College, he studied broadcast, print and online media and interned at Polk County Government TV in Barstow, FL. He also worked as a photojournalist at Wink News in Fort Myers. “I love working with video, shooting and edigting mostly,” says Jordyn. “I zeroed in on journalism because I could use my video production skills to tell a visual story.” A lifetime soccer fan, Jordyn and his fiancé postponed their May 29 nuptials. He lives in Sioux Falls.

American Experience The Vote
One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote — a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. In its final decade, from 1909 to 1920, movement leaders wrestled with contentious questions about the most effective methods for affecting social change. They debated the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and relentless public protests. The battle for the vote also upended previously accepted ideas about the proper role of women in American society and challenged the definitions of citizenship and democracy. Exploring how and why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for — and against — women’s suffrage, The Vote brings to life the unsung leaders of the movement and the deep controversies over gender roles and race that divided Americans then — and continue to dominate political discourse today. Available on Passport June 8. Stream the film before its July 6 broadcast premiere. 24

SDPB UNDERWRITER SPOTLIGHT
SDN COMMUNICATIONS
Vernon Brown, VP of Marketing & Communications “SDN is blessed to be a South Dakota company that has a message and a story to tell. South Dakota Public Broadcasting is so FOCUSed on South Dakota, that it’s just a natural match for us. SDN is a South Dakota home-grown company. We’ve been around for about three decades. We were started by the independent telephone companies – cooperatives, municipal, tribal, and family-owned telephone companies – to join their networks together to provide long distance choice to their customers. That was 30 years ago, but today that 50,000-mile fiber optic network is really about connecting people and businesses to the internet. That’s what we do today throughout every corner of South Dakota and much of the southern third of Minnesota. Not only are we able to tell SDN’s story and what we do on
SDPB’s underwriting, but the listeners and viewers thank us for supporting that effort, for supporting SDPB. It speaks to our audience: technical and IT people, top decision makers in South Dakota. We’ve found, in my almost 20 years with SDN, that SDPB is a great platform for us to tell a story and support something that we think is very important to South Dakota. Now, the first voice I wake up to in the morning is that of Cara Hetland on my Smart Speaker. SDN has invested in that messaging. I hear Cara Hetland in the morning talk about SDN communications before I get my news for the day. That platform gives us very hard numbers about how many people use that platform to get their South Dakota Public Broadcasting. On the softer side, whether it’s Images of the Past or the technology beat that we support, those are all great things to invest in South Dakota’s culture, invest in
South Dakota’s education. We’re just very proud to be part of that. It’s also just a cultural thing at SDN. Whether it’s Mark Shlanta, our CEO or myself – we’ve been involved in several public broadcasting boards and committees. Through that, we’ve had an inside view of how impactful SDPB’s content is to South Dakotans and that has made us want to be in those platforms. Ultimately, the content of SDPB is what drives us to want to be present on multiple SDPB platforms. The content is so rich. It’s important for us to be there.” SDN generously supports SDPB’s technology programming and Images of the Past The Middle of Everywhere, a new documentary premiering this fall on SDPB.
SDPB: LOCAL CONTENT, STATEWIDE COVERAGE SDPB reaches over 200,000 households monthly.2 Our viewers are the most educated, influential and community-minded audience in South Dakota.
