In 2018, Rapid City’s St. Thomas More High School girls basketball team made history when they won their fifth straight state Class A championship. The Cavaliers joined the list as the third program in South Dakota high school history to win five consecutive titles. Armour did it first, from 1983 to 1987. Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, under the leadership of Fred Tibbets, followed with five wins from 1997 to 2001.

Cavaliers coach Brandon Kandolin communicates with a player.

Cavalier coach Brandon Kandolin has been with the program for 20 years. SDPB’s Nate Wek talked with Kandolin about the year-round effort that goes into each title, and with Alex Kandolin, a Lady Cav senior who is also the coach’s daughter. Nate Wek: “Coach, five straight championships. What has the ride been like these past five years?” Brandon Kandolin: “When I think about it, it’s been a really fast ride! I’m very proud of every girl that’s come through that’s put in the time, the work and has made it was it was.” NW: “Can you elaborate on attitude

and mentality your team and your coaches have?” BK: “One is just the consistency. A program has got to have that consistency of a coach that has experience. Next thing, I’ve got a great coaching staff. My assistant has been with me for the last 11 years. We’re on the same page, we know what we want. We have our differences, but that’s what makes it work. And as long as we can prepare defensively, we’re going to put ourselves in a position to win. That’s been a big staple of what we’ve done.” NW: “Coach, your records, your overall win-loss, some of these years – they’re not perfect seasons. When you have a team that has high expectations and they take a defeat early in the season, how do you talk to the girls about overcoming adversity?” BK: “Adversity is such a character builder, whether its in sports or anything else. You have to learn from every experience. A loss early in the season can ground you, make you level-

headed and help you understand, ‘hey, the other team wants to win, too.’ You’ve got to bring it every time.” NW: “Some Tommy More seniors went on to play Division 1 hoops. What does that mean to you as a coach to know you’ve helped pave their future?” BK: “It makes me feel fortunate. And it’s not all me. It’s a lot of them. And not only just in basketball, but in life. We’ve had some great, great players, from Caitlin Duffy to this year Klaire Kirsch playing at University of Nebraska-Kearney. She’s come in as a freshman and contributing and playing some of the most minutes out of anybody. Dru Gylten is a redshirt freshman at the University of Utah, ranked 21 in the nation and she’s ranked nationally 11th for assists. Ciara Duffy at USD is putting up incredible numbers and making that team successful. Alexys Swedlund is a senior at Washington State University has hit her 1,000th point and her 200th career. She has the record for Washington State for most career three-pointers. A lot of great players and a lot of great people have come out of here. That makes me feel good. It makes me feel like, again, my coaches and our program are doing what is necessary to prepare these young ladies if they want to go to that next level.” NW: “How does that success help the next generation, the fifth and sixth graders?” BK: “The saying ‘success breeds success’ is very true. It starts with the ones who practice against the starting varsity. They’re getting those reps, understanding the hard work, physicality, all those things it takes to become successful. At the same time, we’ve got freshman and eighth graders that have to practice with us and they get to see it every day. I’m fortunate enough to work with fourththrough eighth-graders every summer and I try to have my high school girls here to be a part of that. There’s nothing like watching a fourth grader come in, look up at that girl and say, ‘Yeah, I want to be like you. I want to win a state championship, too.’ And the older girls, they love being

around those little kids. They love showcasing their talent. I think that’s a huge part of the success we have here.” NW: “Alex, what’s it been like playing for your dad?” Alex Kandolin: “Playing for my dad has been probably one of the best experiences of my life. We get along so well, and he’s also my golf coach. It’s really cool the connection we have. I’ve kind of been his eyes and ears on the floor, and he, in turn, has given me what to give to the girls. It’s really cool.” NW: “What’s the feeling of having multiple state championships?” AK: “When the buzzer goes off, it’s such an indescribable feeling of wonder and awe. All of your hard work going into something you’ve finally done. Last year, I could not stop crying. Happy tears, of course.” NW: “What’s it like to have success and then start over again with a new season, that all eyes are on you?” AK: “Coaches always start the new season with, ‘You didn’t win anything yet. You’re a new team.’ And so, I don’t know if that pressure necessarily gets to us. It’s just more like you step into a gym and it’s like, ‘Okay. We’ve got to bring our A game. All these people came to watch.’” NW: “You had a serious ACL injury and can no longer play. At the same time, you go to games and is there a positive part to being another set of eyes?” AK: “Yeah, the most positive thing out of this whole ACL thing is that instead of being on the court helping my team, I can be their eyes in the transferring of coaches to the players. I wasn’t a scorer, or much of a playmaker, but I can point out defense end things to them and they take it seriously and take it back onto the court. NW: “What will you most remember?” AK: “The traveling and the girls. They’re all my best friends and we’ve become so close. Definitely the bonding. And the discipline. We have fun but props to our coaches. The family atmosphere of the parents, the coaches, the girls in general. From

our family life to school life, we’re really disciplined and driven. We know what we want.” SDPB’s coverage of High School Basketball Championships starts Thursday, March 7. See p. 3 for schedule.

SD Science Teachers Association Honors Steven Rokusek The South Dakota Science Teachers Association (SDSTA) honored SDPB’s Education Specialist Steven “Science Steve” Rokusek with its 2019 Friend of Science Award during its annual conference in Huron in February. As Education Specialist, Rokusek works to provide PBS and SDPB resources to South Dakota’s PreK-12 educators, routinely provides science teaching demonstrations at conferences and in-services throughout the state, and maintains close contact with teachers and others to build and navigate SDPB’s educational resources. “The SDSTA is an amazing organization of science educators dedicated to the advancement of science education in South Dakota,” says Rokusek. “I’m proud to be part of this remarkable group of educators and humbled that I’ve been selected for this award. I’ve always enjoyed science and have never considered science education as a ‘job.’ For me, it is a privilege to share my love of science with others.” Thank you, SDSTA, and congratulations, Steve!

Ruth Wilson stars in a true-life story of her own grandmother’s love and betrayal. At the outset of World War II, Alison McKelvie took a secretarial job with the Secret Intelligence Service. There, she fell in love with an older man—Major Alexander Wilson, a popular author of spy novels then doing real intelligence work for the war effort. Little did Alison know, but she was entering a plot as tangled as one of the major’s mind-bending fictions. Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Luther) stars as her own grandmother Alison in the true story of a woman’s search for her husband’s real identity on Masterpiece: Mrs. Wilson. Wilson also serves as executive producer, playing a pivotal role in bringing her family saga to television. “I would tell various people the story, and they all said to me, ‘you’ve got to get this made,’” she says. Iain Glen (Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones) costars as Alec, a glamorous and seductive operative in the mold of James Bond, which is no accident, since Alec’s novels pioneered

the character of the debonair spy, based on Alec’s own qualities. This personality type was later exploited by Ian Fleming in his Bond books. Mrs. Wilson opens in 1963, when Alison and Alec have been married for more than 20 years and have two grown sons. While working on his new novel, Alec suffers a fatal heart attack. Not long after, the griefstricken Alison is confronted by a woman claiming to be Alec’s real wife, Gladys (Elizabeth Rider). At the funeral, Alison is approached by Alec’s colleagues, who offer condolences but refer to puzzling aspects of his work and personal life. Seized with doubt about the man she thought she knew, Alison is determined to find out who Alec really was, while keeping her discoveries secret from her sons, who have nothing but happy memories of their father. Nervously, Alison tracks down Coleman, Alec’s old spymaster, and enters the looking-glass world of assumed identities and faked romances. SDPB1: Sunday, March 31, 8pm (7 MT)

Great Performances Julius Caesar

Set in a women’s prison, Great Performances Julius Caesar offers a powerful dramatization of the catastrophic consequences of a political leader’s extension of power beyond constitutional confines through an allfemale lens. The all-female cast portray both male and female roles within the play. Brutus wrestles with his moral conscience over the assassination of Julius Caesar, and Mark Antony manipulates the crowd with subtle and incendiary rhetoric to create frenzied mob violence. In this acclaimed Donmar Warehouse production directed Phyllida Lloyd, Shakespeare’s famous discourse on power, loyalty and tragic idealism is heightened against the backdrop of female incarceration. SDPB1: Tuesday, March 26, 8pm (7 MT)

Discover the story of a courageous, non-violent women’s movement that formed the heart of the Palestinian struggle for freedom during the 1987 uprising, known as the First Intifada. One woman must make a choice between love, family and freedom. Undaunted, she embraces all three.

In a year when women are mobilizing and running for office in unprecedented numbers, Women, War & Peace returns Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26, 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1. The new series demonstrates how some of the biggest international stories of recent memory are shaped by women. An all-female cast of directors present four never-before-told stories about the women who risked their lives for peace, changing history in the process. If today’s movements signal a future marked by gender equality, Women, War & Peace II looks to the past to see exactly—and how effectively—women can make that happen. Seven years after the original debut of the mini-series, Women, War & Peace II premieres at a critical political moment where women are calling for a seat at the table. In uncovering untold histories of those who have made that possible, the series reveals their transformative power and the long road ahead for contemporary peacebuilders around the world.

Rapid City High School’s 1968 varsity basketball cheerleaders were (from left) Terry Blanton, Shirley Landstrom, Jan Glaze, Kay McNutt, Gail Flohr and Diana McCluskey. All died in a plane crash while returning from the boys State A basketball tournament in Sioux Falls.

The Spirit of Six

Memorials and awards honor a tragic incident in high school basketball history. Each March during the state high school basketball championships, revelry and competition pause for more somber moments as the Spirit of Six and Spirit of Su awards are bestowed. The Spirit of Su is given to an outstanding athlete who exemplifies the achievements of SueAnne Big Crow, (Oglala Sioux) a three-time Class A all-stater for the Pine Ridge Lady Thorpes who died in a car accident en route to the Miss Basketball awards. The Spirit of Six honors six Rapid City High School cheerleaders who died in a plane crash March 17, 1968, at Rapid City Regional Airport as they returned from leading Cobbler fans at the state championships in Sioux Falls. Jan Glaze, Shirley Landstrom, Laureen “Kay” McNutt, Terry Blanton, Diana McCluskey and Gail Flohr died, along with pilot Ivan Landstrom, his wife, Mary (Shirley’s parents) and English teacher and cheer adviser Dorothy Lloyd. an outstanding cheerleading squad that exemplifies the late leaders’ commitment and dynamism. In conjunction with SDPB’s coverage of the state tournaments, Nate Wek and Brad Van Osdel trace the history and evolution of the Spirit of Six award, from its early beginnings as a presentation in hotel lobbies to the South Dakota High School Activities Association expanding the recognition to all classes at both tournaments during a half-time Saturday night award ceremony. In a digital shorts to air during basketball coverage, SDPB visits the Spirit of Six memorials in Rapid City, including one by Crazy Horse Memorial sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski. We talk with Paul Jensen, a Rapid City High 1968 graduate, who was close with Laureen “Kay” McNutt and Jan Glaze, who has found the memorials helpful in dealing with the loss of friends in his youth. “Because we really weren’t allowed to cry,” says Jensen. “We really didn’t have any

counseling or support, so we just took it as it was. Stiff upper lip stuff back then, because all our parents were World War II. Secrets of the Dead: King Arthur’s Lost Kingdom SDPB1: Wednesday, March 27, 9pm (8 MT) SDPB2: Thursday, March 28, 7pm (6 MT)

Exciting new archaeological discoveries decode the myths and piece together a very different story of this turning point in Britain’s history. The excavation of a stone palace complex on the Tintagel peninsula in Cornwall – long believed to be the birthplace of the King Arthur legend — is central to our quest. More than folklore, was Arthur in fact ruler of a prosperous and sophisticated trading village, and the heroic defender of the native Britons against the invading Anglo-Saxons?

Photo: 360 Productions

A knight in shining armor may be a storybook character, but once upon a time, knighthood was serious business. For countless medieval fighters, their armor was what stood between life and death. NOVA challenged blacksmith Ric Furrer and master armorer Jeff Wasson to recreate parts of an elite armor originally manufactured in the Royal Workshop founded by King Henry VIII. Trace their successes and setbacks as they rediscover centuries-old metalworking secrets and put their new armor to the ultimate test against a period musket.

Friends of SDPB Welcome Twyla Olson Friends of SDPB is happy to announce Twyla Olson is the new Director of Membership. Born and raised in Webster, Olson graduated from Aberdeen Central and Augustana University with a degree in English Literature and a teaching certificate. Olson joins SDPB from Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services, where she worked with public TV and radio stations throughout the U.S. Before that, she served at Minnesota Public Radio’s national program distribution arm, American Public Media, where she sold programming to stations. “I see SDPB playing a huge role in education of all ages in South Dakota. It helped me widen my understanding of our state and the wider world as I grew up here. SDPB knits us together locally and broadens our perspectives as citizen of this country and this world. It challenges us with new ideas and comforts us with old friends. It’s my constant companion and has been my entire adult life.” Olson shares memorable moments from her career in public broadcasting: “Working at MPR and APM afforded me the ability to make friends with many of the voices you hear each day on the air. Meeting and working with Kia Ryssdal and the creators of Marketplace was a huge

treat. Meeting and working with Tom and Ray from Car Talk, as well as Doug Berman, creator of both Car Talk and Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me! increased my appreciation of the genius and hard work that goes into making great radio. Working with and calling Lynne Rosetto Kasper a friend and talking recipes and food with her is a treasured memory. Working with stations to increase their revenue through vehicle donation was rewarding on so many levels, but one of my favorite memories was when a tiny station in Gallup, NM (KGLP) received a vehicle that netted the station $22,000. That was larger than any single gift they had ever received. They were thrilled. It made a huge impact on their station. But my favorite part of working with stations is meeting the people on the ground, the ones doing the day-to-day work. The dedication to the mission of public media that abounds in this industry is a constant reminder of why this is where I choose to work.” Olson is headquartered at SDPB’s Sioux Falls Studio. “I’m thrilled to be here,” says Olson. “It feels like coming home. Growing up in northeastern South Dakota, it wasn’t Fall without a trip to Sica Hollow to see the brilliant change of colors, or Summer without numerous outings

to the beautiful, regional lakes. However, my favorite activity is searching out all the hidden antique stores in tiny towns throughout the state and collecting vintage treasures, especially local folk art. Now that I’m living in Sioux Falls again I’ll be rediscovering the city and trying all the new eateries and breweries! Send me your recommendations!” Contact Twyla Olson with comments, questions or local restaurant suggestions at Twyla.Olson@sdpb.org or 605-367-7001.
