WOUNDED KNEE STAND-OFF 50TH ANNIVERSARY FEBRUARY 2023
SDPB MAGAZINE

SDPB is always here for you—no matter where you are or what you’re doing—reporting the news, adding depth and context, sharing the diversity of our region, and helping connect cultures and people. We do this on the TV and radio, yes, but also through events across the state, livestreams for every channel and through SD.net, and our education and outreach efforts.

When you need to be entertained and enlightened... when you need the unexpected put into a more familiar context… when you need an independent news source speaking truth to power... when you need the serendipity of a new book or music, an inspiring idea, an intriguing discovery…that’s when you turn to SDPB.

It’s only through your generous support that SDPB can continue to build bridges and enrich our thinking on a myriad of issues. We are grateful for you!

Unlike any other media service, SDPB has a stake in the future of our region. It’s a passion that guides the development of every story that SDPB delivers, from national politics and policy to global challenges to issues that affect us right here at home such as city planning, neighborhoods, schools, transportation, emergency broadcasting, and more.

We each have a part to play to ensure the future of smart and illuminating stories, including From Wounded Knee to Standing Rock: A Reporter’s Journey, airing February 27th, right here on SDPB. The film features previously unseen footage within Wounded Knee that director Kevin McKiernan buried before his arrest by the FBI at the siege’s conclusion. This documentary, along with so many locally produced specials, are just a sampling of what you support with your SDPB Membership.

It’s passionate. It’s powerful. It’s essential.

WOUNDED KNEE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

STAND-OFF

On February 27th, 1973, a 71-day stand-off began at Wounded Knee. During this time, around 200 Ogalala Lakota and American Indian Movement (AIM) followers occupied the town of Wounded Knee, SD. The occupation was a result of the desire among Native people that their voices be heard and treaties fulfilled. The town of Wounded Knee was significant because of the massacre that took place there 80 years prior.

The Occupation of Wounded Knee was significant for many reasons. It exposed the suffering of Indigenous people and helped shine a spotlight on injustices. Progress happened in the wake of the Wounded Knee Occupation, including the Indian Religious Freedom Act that Congress passed in 1978. There remains room for growth, and with education and remembrance of these historydefining events, change can happen.

Kevin McKiernan, the writer, producer, and director of the film From Wounded Knee to Standing Rock: A Reporter's Journey, was a rookie reporter for NPR and the Wounded Knee Occupation was his first assignment. Kevin discussed what it was like to be immersed in such a profound event. What he thought would be a quick weekend trip turned into much more. “I expected it to be over in a weekend, you know. I only brought one pair of pants,” says Kevin.

After being snuck into the reservation to evade a news blackout, he recorded film and sound during the standoff – much of it hasn’t been seen or heard before. With over 150 hours of footage and interviews across 11 states and 8 reservations collected, his documentary was an 8-year journey that offers a personal look into what it was like to be involved in the 71-day occupation.

STAND-OFF

“It was a much more profound thing than I realized,” explains Kevin, “I wanted to tell a story, and the story I wanted to tell was how I knew so little and learned so much.”

Kevin graduated college with a degree in English. Upon the beginning of this journey, he had a vague idea of what he hoped to accomplish by gathering this footage. He found his goal along the way, saying, “I didn't know what I was doing. I was very much like members of the audience who didn't know. So, as I learned something along the way in the film, I was hoping that the audience would learn that as well. I was a hitchhiker on history, and history took place in front of me.” He claims that while he already had his degree, this experience was where the learning really happened. “South Dakota was kind of my graduate school. I majored in English in college, and I had gone to graduate school in English as well. But I think South Dakota was my real education... I couldn't have learned any

of that from a distance.” Kevin offers a take on the Wounded Knee occupation, explaining that while it was a territorial and violent battle, ultimately, it was a spiritual battle. “I think that a lot of people think of Wounded Knee, and they think of guns, and they think of fighting and that sort of thing. I learned that was a very small part of what was going on. The real center of that experience for me was a spiritual one because of the daily sweat lodges and the other ceremonies that took place there. People really understood that their religion was under attack. If you look around to all the tribes in South Dakota and other Western states, you will see there's a tremendous revival in terms of spirituality.” Kevin explains that while spiritual freedom was taken for granted regarding other religions, this occupation was a fight for Native Americans’ spiritual freedom. “There was a ten-day shooting war with federal agents, which made headlines worldwide. But you couldn't really see from the outside as a reporter. You couldn't see even if you had very strong binoculars, what was driving it on the inside. That was a spiritual change."

Kevin's aspiration for his documentary is to spark interest in Native history. “I hope that [viewers] learn and appreciate native history, which has never really been taught in this country until after the Wounded Knee experience. I hope they would be propelled by the story that that I was telling; the story of a stranger in a strange land.” Kevin wants to engage viewers and create a different view. “In the five decades since, a tremendous amount has changed in Indian Country. People have gone from shame to pride.”

Kevin McKiernan, whose work has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, has served as a foreign correspondent from Nicaragua, Iraq, Syria, West Africa, and Afghanistan. He has also produced the PBS documentary Good Kurd, Bad Kurd and co-produced the Frontline episode The Spirit of Crazy Horse

From Wounded Knee to Standing Rock: A Reporter's Journey airs on SDPB1 Monday, February 27th at 7pm Central (6 MT) - the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the 1973 Wounded Knee Occupation.

Hosted by folk singer, author, and rancher Eliza Blue, Wish You Were Here is a traveling show that celebrates rural life across the Northern Plains through stories and songs.

This month’s episode takes viewers to snowy, scenic St. Peter-on-the-Prairie, a non-profit community center outside Madison, South Dakota. The stone building was erected in 1948 by the St Peter’s Lutheran congregation. Stones were brought to the church through a stone-hauling bee which local farm families transported from their fields.

Eliza will be hosting the JAS Quintet, a five-piece instrumental group that specializes in original jazz music. They will be backing Eliza as well as sharing some of their own winter-themed compositions.

TONA ROZUM

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT

With SDPB’s mission to bring information and education to all corners of the state comes numerous projects to ensure this mission is possible. One of our current projects is the Mitchell Tower project which will bring ease of access to information to the greater Mitchell area. While more populated, this region of the state has had a weak signal in the past. However, this new tower and transmitter will bring a strong FM signal.

Donor support to this effort has been critical. An early donor to this project was Tona Rozum. Tona is a former legislator residing in Mitchell. She particularly enjoys the ability to follow what’s happening in Pierre.

"You can listen to what the governor's got to say. You can go in and listen to committee meetings and archived committee meetings. So, if the legislature is in session and you have wind of something that you're really concerned about or impacts your business or impacts you, you can go in after the fact."

Regardless of where South Dakota citizens live, everyone must have access to news happening in our state. "Rural South Dakota is the heart and soul of us, it's who we are,” said Tona. “Without information being able to be disseminated to people living in

rural areas or access to that information, it becomes problematic." She explains that ensuring the rural areas have access to news around the state is part of maintaining connection. "Having a tower here, I believe, will extend our access to this kind of rural area that we have out here where people don't get a lot of access."

Tona says that information is a way to acknowledge the wide range of interests and needs that keep us connected. "We are a diverse state; not just East River and West River, not just rural and city, but there is just a lot of diversity in our small state of 850,000 people. The more information that you can get out there and people have access to, the better. It's a world of connectivity now."

SDPB appreciates those who support our mission to provide news to the state and keep our citizens connected. Without donors like Tona, we wouldn't be able to make those hopeful changes that impact our state. "South Dakota Public Broadcasting is local. It's our state, it's our people," praises Tona. "I love hearing other opinions because it's either going to build on your belief of a story or it's going to blow holes in it. If it blows holes in it, then you have an opportunity to figure out different ways to look at things."

DAKOTA LIFE 25TH ANNIVERSARY FLASHBACK

JERRY NELSON

We're celebrating 25 years of Dakota Life. Throughout this anniversary season, we'll revisit some of the people we've met on the show over the years. This month, a conversation with Jerry Nelson of Volga, SD.

INTERVIEW BY

FORMER DIRECTOR OF TELEVISION AT SDPB

Jerry Nelson of Volga, SD writes a popular column for newspapers and magazines across the country. In 2016, his columns were turned into a book, Dear County Agent Guy. Jerry and his wife Julie talked with SDPB on Dakota Life in the spring of 2017 about their love of the land, and his love and talent for writing.

SDPB: How is the business of farming these days?

Jerry Nelson: Farming has been good. We’ve been blessed. The biggest change on a personal level was the birth of our grandson, who lives with his parents in Kansas City. On a professional level, I’ve become a regular contributor to Successful Farming’s website, www.agriculture.com.

SDPB: Has your writing style and subject matter changed at all over the years, if so, how did they change?

Jerry: I think I’m a little more “serious” now. Looking back at my early columns, I see someone who was in dire need of a good editor.

SDPB: You clearly still enjoy writing, where do you find inspiration for your stories?

Jerry: A looming deadline is often my biggest inspiration. My wife has always been a tremendous source of ideas.

SDPB: What is your favorite piece that you have written? What are you most proud of and why?

Jerry: That’s like asking which child is your favorite. But I still like “The Four Seasons of Farming” because of the imagery and emotions it invokes.

SDPB: What story that you have written has received the most attention?

Jerry: My column about the death of our old dog, Sandy, got a lot of attention. Many people said that they were touched by that piece.

SDPB: What advice would you give to young people who would like to get started as writers?

Jerry: Practice your craft daily and don’t be afraid to submit your writing. No editor has ever complained about having too many good writers.

CHANGES

Even before Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood first aired on February 19, 1968, on PBS, public television had been known as a trusted source of commercial-free educational and informational programs for children. Soon joined by Sesame Street, The Electric Company, Zoom, and more the shows comprised a block of 2-3 hours on weekdays through the 1970s and early 1980s.

The need for more educational shows became even more relevant in the era of latch-key kids and the expansion of kids’ shows on cable TV. As those needs were identified PBS greatly expanded its offering of programs to offer a safe haven that parents grew to trust. Shows like Reading Rainbow, Newton’s Apple, and 3-2-1 Contact joined the expanding line-up through the 1980s.

By the 1990s commercial TV aired shows that were as much about marketing products as they were about entertainment, leading to the Children’s Television Act of 1997. PBS took the opposite path and worked with educators, sociologists, and researchers to develop shows that taught children Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, as well as healthy habits and tools that they can use to navigate society. PBS was dedicated to serving children to such a degree that starting in 1996 many stations aired kids’ shows from early in the morning until late in the afternoon – SDPB among them.

The next major development was the launch on January 16, 2017, with a 24/7 channel and live stream of the channel on the PBS Kids website and video app. Now parents and their kids had

access to a linear live stream of programs online and over the air, as well as video on demand.

Now we are seeing an evolution in technology and the way people use television. This evolution is driven by the adoption of viewing on second screens by younger viewers. While the use of traditional viewing habits in the morning remains strong, children are migrating away from watching TV in the afternoons. This has caused PBS to review how they schedule their broadcast day.

Effective Monday, February 6 the weekday schedule on SDPB and PBS stations around the nation is changing. Favorite PBS Kids programs will remain on our main channel until 3:00 p.m. Central, 2:00 p.m. Mountain. After that, we will transition to shows that life-long learners can appreciate. National, regional, and local shows that explore the world and feed our curiosity. Plus, an hour of news from a different perspective leads into PBS NewsHour, which remains anchored in its usual time slot.

The PBS Kids 24/7 channel isn’t going anywhere either. It remains the only commercial-free channel offering programs for kids under age 10 available anywhere.

SDPB’s commitment to providing a safe place for children to consume educational programming remains strong. Combined with our Education Department which provides resources for parents, daycare providers, homeschoolers, and educators, SDPB is proud to offer shows to our audience where they live.

Technology is changing the way we watch television. There are options beyond cable and satellite that offer different ways of watching the shows you like. Each month we’ll use this space to talk about how you can watch SDPB’s four television channels and listen to SDPB’s two radio channels.

We’re starting with the oldest technology – the TV antenna. If you watch SDPB on a TV set connected to an antenna you are not alone! As viewers cut the cord, they are realizing the best way to receive local TV stations, including SDPB, is via an antenna.

Here are some basics. The type of antenna you use is determined by how far away from a TV tower you are. If you live within 30 miles of an SDPB tower, and there are no major obstructions, you should be able to receive a signal using an indoor set-top antenna. These are available at most department and electronics stores and other local retailers for less than $25. If you live farther away, you will probably need to purchase a more robust antenna and mount it in your attic or on your roof.

Once your antenna is set up and attached to your TV set you will need to “scan” for channels. Follow the instructions for your TV set, they vary by brand. Your antenna might need to be adjusted for optimal reception.

For those who already have an antenna, there are times when you lose the ability to watch a particular channel. The most efficient way to resolve this problem is to do a complete re-scan of your TV set.

1. Unplug the antenna.

2. Scan for channels.

3. Turn off your TV set.

4. Reattach your antenna.

5. Turn your TV set on.

6. Scan for channels.

Most of the time this resolves the issue.

If you have issues with over-the-air reception of SDPB’s channels reach out to our reception expert, Thad Utech. He’s available by email at thaddeus.utech@sdpb.org.

For generations, Monopoly has been America’s favorite board game, a love letter to unbridled capitalism and — for better or worse — the impulses that make our free-market society tick. But behind the myth of the game’s creation is an untold tale of theft, obsession and corporate double-dealing. Part detective story, part sharp social commentary and part pop-culture celebration, American Experience Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History presents the fascinating true story of the game and those who created it.

STORIES FROM THE STAGE THROUGH THIcK AND THIN

When we are faced with adversity, it's easy to believe that the universe is conspiring against us. However, the lessons we learn from the battle last a lifetime. Linda Button learns the difference between curses and kindness; ToRena Webb-Thomas works to recover economically after the crash of 2008; and Marlon Fisher uses comedy to lessen the pain of war. Three storytellers, three interpretations of Through Thick and Thin, hosted by Theresa Okokon.
