Melissa Sievers passed away August 19, 2021, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 42 years, after warrior-like battles with lymphoma and West Nile virus. Melissa leaves behind her devoted husband Nick Sievers and their sons Owen, age 9, and Isaac, age 4. Melissa worked as a videographer/editor, photographer, and producer for SDPB for 19 years. In that time, Melissa told countless stories about the people, places, and food and culture across South Dakota, most recently as producer for Dakota Life. Melissa said of her work: “The people I visit with are so passionate. So many of the stories are about tenacity and connection to the land. I feel like I pay tribute not only to people who came before, but to a variety of people exploring and trying to do things differently.” In addition to videography and photography, Melissa loved nature and outdoor activities: bicycling, kayaking, hiking, morel mushroom hunting, gardening, and raising vegetables and chickens at home on the farm she shared with Nick and the boys. Melissa also loved introducing her young sons to the natural world. Owen and Isaac often accompanied Mom on her many outdoor adventures as well as on photo and video shoots. Celebration of Life services were held for Melissa Aug. 24 at the United Church of Christ

Congregational Church in Vermillion. Melissa’s ashes were placed under a new oak tree near her beloved garden and chicken run at the country home she shared with Nick, Owen, and Isaac. SDPB staff are saddened by this tremendous loss. Melissa was a bright, creative colleague and a dear friend to many. Her smile, positivity and “never-saynever” attitude impacted her co-workers as well as the hundreds of South Dakotans whose stories she loved telling. We are all grateful and better for having known her. Melissa’s husband Nick Sievers is thankful for the outpouring of generous support. Our neighbors probably do not appreciate our lawn quite as much as the bees do. Each spring the white clover and dandelions — two breakfast flowers for bees, in seasonal terms — bloom unrestrained in a friendly merger with the Kentucky bluegrass. Milkweeds crowd the juniper shrubs like an ungainly landscape design fail. I smile sheepishly as adjacent, our neighbor patrols his turf, liquidating the first hint of invaders with copious pumps of Roundup. The weedy interlopers, along with hyssop, echinacea and bergamot I’ve planted in the backyard, comprise my little bee buffet. Admittedly, we can feel anxious and unneighborly about our weed-friendly lawn. The social expectations for a green glade and disdain for stingers run strong. Even our 10-year-old, cool as a cucumber in our yard, pantomimes terror amidst his friends should a beneficial insect stray to its deadly misfortune onto the school playground. Woe to the nesting ground bee minding her own beeswax on the soccer field. Watching the pollinators work our humble nectar and pollen circuit is mesmerizing. This month, a new episode of Nature presents the genesis of a British man’s bee obsession. My Garden of a Thousand Bees features a veteran wildlife cameraman, restless and seeking refuge from the pandemic, filming the bees in his small urban garden. Soon he’d catalogued over 60 species of bees and even be-friended an individual bee throughout its entire lifespan.

More Bees Than People

Approximately 400 species of bees are native to South Dakota. When we visualize bees, many of us default to the iconic: honeybees and bumblebees. “The archetype we have in our minds is that a bee is black, yellow, fuzzy and kind of largish,” says Amanda Bachmann, Pesticide Education & Urban Entomology Field Specialist at the South Dakota State University Extension Regional Center in Pierre. But South Dakota bee species vary wildly. They can be bright metallic green or resemble tiny wasps. “Just because people don’t see insects in an area doesn’t mean they aren’t there,” says Bachmann. “If we increase areas of habitat, we can really do a lot to support the populations that exist in the margins.”

South Dakota’s wild and managed honeybees are chiefly threatened by habitat loss, agrochemicals, and parasites. According to the South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Apiary Inspection Program, approximately 270 beekeepers are registered in the state, with about 30% producing commercial honey. Bret Adee is a partner in Adee Honey Farms with his brother Kelvin and father Richard. Adee Honey Farms has over 80,000 hives. Like many commercial apiarists, Adee Honey Farms trucks their bees to winter in California for the annual almond pollination season. Bees cross-pollinate crops like apples and blueberries, but Adee says honeybees also benefit autopollinated crops like sunflowers and soybeans. Adee cites a study from Dr. Dennis vanEngelsdorp, professor of entomology at the University of Maryland, that puts last year’s honeybee losses at around 44%. “When I was a young man, we’d think anything over 5% was a mismanagement problem,” says Adee. “Forty-four percent is crazy, if you consider a livestock business with 44% losses.” Adee says some of our agrochemicals weren’t screened properly for their impact on beneficial insects by the Environmental Protection Agency. “They approved some insecticides that were very detrimental to our beneficial insects that were very kind to humans,” says Adee. “It was going in the right direction, but didn’t look at the big enough picture.” Adee also says farm efficiency that destroys peripheral

forage areas contributes to the stress on bees. “At one time, food like milkweeds was everywhere. Now, milkweeds are kind of hard to find.” Bachmann is particularly worried about the vulnerability of unmanaged bees. “Not to discount whatsoever how difficult it is to be a beekeeper these days. It’s getting more expensive and more challenging,” says Bachmann. “But I do also try to get people to be more aware of the other 399 kinds of species. Honeybees tend to be active all season, we make sure they reproduce, we make more queens. Meanwhile, mason bees, longhorn bees, and bumblebees can be tied to only a certain subset of plants that may only be present in a restricted geographic range or even restricted time during the growing season. Bumblebees are like little flying panda bears as indicators for habitat loss and perhaps for endangered and extinction rates for our native bee species.”

Integrated Pest Management The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources proposes and enforces the policies and sets the statutes for pesticide application, while Bachmann and the Extension Service provide the training and education for application that is safe and effective for both applicators and the environment. Bachmann’s position extends to assisting folks in the identification of insects and the best practices for Integrated Pest Management (IPM), both large- and small-scale.

IPM targets the life cycles of pests and how they interact with the environment, from farms to homes and backyards. “In a lot of cases, the way you solve your pest issue is perhaps not with a chemical intervention, but with something else, like maybe changing your planting date of your crop,” says Bachmann. “I try to give our pesticide applicators at least an introduction to IPM concepts, because while they’re the ones making the pesticide applications, they’re not necessarily the people who are making the decisions about what pesticides to apply. We do make sure that when we’re talking to agronomists and crop consultants, that we cover IPM a lot, because for things like plant diseases especially, it’s not always a fungicide that’s going to solve your problem. We’re actually breeding crops to be resistant to certain diseases.” One issue Bachmann runs into for laypeople is what constitutes a pesticide. “It’s so important to be really cognizant of what pesticide product you’re using,” says Bachmann. “A lot of people, when they use the word pesticide, they don’t realize that covers insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, everything that ends in -cide. People tell me, ‘Oh, I don’t spray pesticides. I only use herbicides.’ But herbicides are pesticides.” When it comes to wasps, folks often reach for the Ortho or Raid. “Homeowners ask, ‘Well, I’ve got these wasps that are getting into my house. How do I kill them?’ (continued on p. 29)

Celebrate the recipients of the 34th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards. The evening includes performances and appearances by some of the country’s most celebrated Hispanic artists and visionaries. The historic program, which was created by the White House in 1988 to commemorate the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month in America, is among the highest honors by Latinos for Latinos and supported by 40 national Hispanicserving institutions and features top Latinx leaders being honored by top performers and personalities. Along the journey, Pati, who received a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University, draws on her vast experiences to conduct in-depth interviews with locals in the region. This month Dakota Life ventures northeastward to feature Milbank. The seat of Grant County, Milbank sports a population of about 3,400 folks and is known as the home of American Legion Baseball. Dakota Life: Greetings from Milbank premieres on SDPB1 and SDPB.org Thursday, October 7, at 8pm (7 MT) and rebroadcasts Sunday, October 10, at 1pm (noon MT).

Holland Grist Windmill Built by English settler Henry Holland in 1884, the Milbank Grist Mill was completely reconstructed in 2009. It stands 44 feet high and is fitted with four sails that are each sevenfeet wide and 30-feet long. Tours and live demonstrations are offered several times a year. Piano Man We’ll travel to Stockholm, South Dakota, to meet piano repairman and keyboard collector Steve Misener. Misener’s been collecting pianos, organs, and other keyed instruments for nearly 40 years. Most of the 130 instruments in his collection date to the 18th and 19th centuries. Some can be connected in one way or another to musical greats such as Haydn and Brahms. Others were rescued just before they could be thrown out. Steve Misener has travelled the world looking for information about particular instruments and he’s considered one of the top experts in the field of vintage keyboards. American Legion Baseball Milbank is the birthplace of American Legion baseball in the United States. It was founded in 1925 with the first conversations of a baseball league for the youth with the American Legion. It’s been 95 years since its inception, and the city of Milbank is still passionate about the sport. Kingpin: Bowler Mike Mach Mike Mach of Milbank has been bowling since the 1980s, and recently won a National Senior Bowling Championship (ages 60-64) in Nevada. Today he’s celebrating his accomplishment doing what he loves most – bowling at his local spot.

The film places the viewer in a center for individuals with Down syndrome, where the film’s main characters attend school and staff an in-house catering business. One of the regular therapy sessions the middle-aged students attend takes place in a room with a sign that reads, “Taller Adultez Consciente,” Spanish for “Conscious Adult Workshop.” Inside, counselors help students cultivate a sense of self-worth and independence. However, the experiences of the central characters in the outside world seldom reflect those lessons.

Native American Programming in October Warrior Women

A scene in Warrior Women follows Madonna Thunder Hawk, (Oohenumpa Lakota), well into her 70s, sprinting up aluminum bleachers at a sunny outdoor stadium in Eagle Butte. “I do this mainly for myself,” says Thunder Hawk, catching her breath but always in motion. “If you’re not physically able to do community work – hey, get on the couch, grab the remote. Then complain and whine about politics and stuff. That’s why I do it. The only thing I’m running against is myself.” Warrior Women is one of the first projects about the Red Power movement that redirects the camera from well-known AIM members like Russell Means and Dennis Banks to female organizers like Thunder Hawk and her daughter, Marcella Gilbert (Lakota/Dakota). The film traces Thunder Hawk’s activism from the occupations of Alcatraz and Wounded Knee to matriarch-led survivor schools to NoDAPL protests at Standing Rock to today.

communications and outreach director with The Front Porch Coalition, a non-profit suicide prevention and postvention organization that serves Pennington, Meade, and parts of Lawrence County. Eight years after surviving her own suicide attempt, Swier responds to scenes of recent suicide deaths to comfort loved ones. Throughout South Dakota, health systems, law enforcement, and others are finding innovative ways to increase access for mental health care—from a hotline dedicated to the state’s agriculture producers, to tablets that connect a counselor to a person in crisis from across the state. Diving into the streets of Havana, Re-Evolution: The Cuban Dream introduces a social worker, an ethnographer, and three artists. Their stories provide unique perspectives on how Cuba is shaped by an ongoing culture of revolution that is more nuanced than meets the eye. This program is the first in an eventual four-part series which will explore pillars of Cuban society that are drastically evolving today.

A new documentary from SDPB reveals what local guitar professionals appreciate about their chosen instruments and taking you on a musical journey of the qualities and sounds that their favorite instruments can produce. The half-hour program features: Boyd Bristow, Sioux Falls, who owns and owns and plays a rare model of Martin acoustic guitar. He also regularly plays a classic Gibson electric guitar that he bought new in the 1970s. Jay Gilbertson, Yankton, and his 1964 Fender Stratocaster. Gilbertson talks about the unique materials and hand-made quality of Fender Strats built before 1965. Michael Hilson, Yankton, is a guitar instructor in the music department at the University of South Dakota. He’s also a performer fluent in several genres, including classical and jazz. Nick Schwebach, Wakonda, who often plays a 1949 Gibson that he says is perfect for recreating the sound of music that was popular during the 1930s. Scott Simpson, Spearfish, still owns and plays a guitar that was passed down to him many years ago by a relative. Simpson shares the connection between instruments, musicians, and audiences and says that old guitars, in some ways, have lives of their own. James Van Nuys, Rapid City, plays a variety of guitars including a somewhat unusual bronze-bodied resonator guitar. Resonator guitars were popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s before electric amplification was available. Take a journey down gearhead lane – experienced guitarists will find the artists’ insights enlightening, beginning guitarists will find them encouraging, and we can all enjoy the soundtrack. Old Guitars and the Musicians Who Love Them premieres on SDPB1 Thursday, Oct. 14, at 8pm (7 MT) and rebroadcasts Sunday, Oct. 17, at 1pm (noon MT).

Wish You Were Here with host Eliza Blue returns for a second season. This time the traveling music series works as a visual ethnographic almanac, following the ecology and seasonality of raising food on the high plains, interspersed with original stories, art of and about nature, and songs about life on the prairie. Blue offers a preview of the season. Join Blue as we visit Billy Talbot, bass player from the band Crazy Horse, in western South Dakota. Talbot and Blue duet on a Talbot original. “The episode starts with a little arc about ghost towns that are being revitalized,” says Blue. “Billy and his wife live on a homestead that had been essentially abandoned. They’ve turned it into an amazing house with a music barn, where he recorded a bunch of his solo albums.”

Karen Miller grew up on a farm near Draper, SD, where her parents, Doris and Fred Fredericksen, grew wheat and raised cattle. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell and a master’s in social work from the University of Chicago. She and

her young family lived coast-to-coast: New York, Illinois, Michigan, and California. In 1983, with her children grown and her parents advancing in years, she moved to Rapid City. She served as a social worker for Lutheran Social Services, specializing in individual and marital therapy, divorce mediation, and employee assistance programs. In 1995, she established a private counseling practice. Karen says her parents were the original family supporters of SDPB. “Draper did not have a lot of alternatives. They were very excited when public broadcasting came to Reliance. They watched public television and listened to public radio until they died. When they passed away, I upped my support in honor of them. They had been so appreciative of what public broadcasting brought to South Dakota. It sort of feels like a family tradition.” Today Karen enjoys news and Masterpiece programming. “I wake up to Morning Edition every morning and I listen to BBC Overnight. I watch PBS NewsHour and Masterpiece.” “I think the news is the most extensive and includes a perspective that fits with me. It’s more substantial than other news programs. Public broadcasting has enriched the lives of my parents and myself, and I’m most appreciative of it. It’s an excellent public broadcasting system.”

Carmen Kock has joined the Friends of SDPB staff as Membership Specialist. Carmen manages donation details and member accounts. Carmen grew up in Chancellor and is a graduate of Lennox High School and Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Most recently, Carmen was a database analyst/gift processing specialist at Good Samaritan and Sanford Health foundations. “After college, I moved to Burke to teach band,” says Carmen. “At that time, my TV got only one commercial network but both South Dakota and Nebraska Public Television. Those years, especially the 2000 election, are when I became a public broadcasting fan.” Carmen lives in Sioux Falls and enjoys reading, gardening, teaching piano and traveling to national parks in the western United States.

Well, first step is preventing them from getting into your house,” says Bachmann. “A lot of people want to know, ‘What can I spray?’ But that’s not the best first question. I try to get people to walk it back, and figure out what really is the root of the pest issue, and then how can we best manage it. Definitely, pesticides do end up being a solution in some cases, but they’re not always the first thing that we reach for.” Adee says most of the agricultural producers he’s met are cognizant and receptive to IPM, but it may require patience and pivoting. “Sometimes you just get caught in a hurry,” says Adee. “But you’ve got to look at the stress of the immediate compared to the longterm. Some years it’s harder to implement than others. What blew up this year was spider mites, but we got calls from very conscientious producers to help us work with them on controlling spider mites so they could protect their soybean crops and we could protect our honeybees.” South Dakota participates in BeeCheck and DriftWatch, a voluntary registration service where pesticide applicators, beekeepers and crop growers can map and communicate spraying, hive and crop locations. Adee says he has a lot of hope and optimism for producers who are harnessing

creativity into regenerative agriculture. He references the Jorgensen Ranch near Ideal, South Dakota, winners of the 2015 Leopold Conservation Award. “Their efforts in conservation are exceptional. And what really inspires me is the soil health movement and the South Dakota Grassland Coalition. We’ve got top-notch producers in South Dakota who really get the value of whole ecosystems. I think we’re starting to get the changes we need for bees that will benefit all agriculture.” Bachmann urges backyarders to educate themselves on identification as the first step toward pest management that doesn’t encourage habitat decline. “A lot of these native bee species are not going to be aggressive,” says Bachmann. “Stinging is not their first line of defense. Honeybees, bumblebees, social wasps, they’re protecting resources so they kind of come out swinging if their nest is disturbed. But our ground-nesting solitary bees, you’re not encountering them necessarily near their nest, and that nest is not a thing full of resources that they’re defending aggressively.” She cites resources like the Ask Extension at Extension.sdstate.edu and garden lines where users can submit pictures and questions, as well as citizen science apps like iNaturalist and BugGuide.

Like Adee, Bachmann is encouraged by increasing interest in pollinators and pollinator conservation. “Rotary groups and community volunteers want to get grants to build pollinator gardens,” says Bachmann. “It’s not just scientists who think its important for their communities. I think that’s a real success.” Plans for a state bumble bee survey are in the works. Adee’s wishlist includes beneficial plant selection on hunting and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land. Bachmann says neighboring states do more with roadside pollinator habitat initiatives. She’d like to reach a point where insects like the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee and American Burying Beetle, the only insect currently on the Critically Endangered Species List, generate interest and action. “Right now the biggest incentive is self-interest, obviously,” says Adee. “But the more you look at the positives of maintaining landscapes that produce more nectar and pollen for our beneficial insects, and the value of our beneficial insects to us and agriculture, the more we realize we need them.” Nature My Garden of a Thousand Bees premieres Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7pm (6 MT) on SDPB1 and SDPB.org
