Black Women Rally Behind Kamala Harris
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA NEWSWIRE SENIOR NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT
Democrats and the rest of the nation are once again turning to Black women to lead the charge in saving democracy, and they have again stepped to the plate and swung for the fences. Following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not run for the Democratic nomination, the network Win with Black Women organized a Zoom call to show how prepared and determined black women were to take on this enormous challenge. The call, held last Sunday, was a powerful display of unity and determination, with Black women leaders from across the nation voicing their unwavering support for Vice President Kamala Harris.

San Diego City Council Tables Mega Shelter Proposal
Hours of public testimony and council discussion ends with return to negotiating table

In a high stakes hearing on whether or not to adopt Mayor Todd Gloria’s bold proposal for a 1,000-bed mega homeless shelter in Middletown, San Diego City Councilmembers voted 7-2 to postpone the agreement of the lease terms, citing the need for more analysis, negotiations, and legal consideration on a real estate transaction of this scale.

Harris Presses Reset Button for 2024
By Chris Megerian ASSOCIATED PRESS
For the past year, the presidential campaign seemed destined to be a monotonous slog featuring two candidates, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, who voters didn’t really want.
But that all changed on a quiet Sunday afternoon just 107 days before the election.

When President Joseph Biden unexpectedly announced he was dropping out of the race and endorsing his Vice President, Kamala Harris, the game was on for #WinWithBlackWomen.

What began as a simple text from a dear friend, who asked me to only share the Zoom link with like-minded sisters in support of Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid for the White House turned into a late-night Zoom webinar filled with powerful speakers that had over 44,000 participants on the call. In fact, at 11:00 pm, the call had reached 47,000 supporters, which doesn’t even include the 5,000 plus sisters, brothers, and allies who patiently and painstakingly listened on Clubhouse (some folks don’t believe in muting themselves). The strategy call was organized by Win with Black Women’s Founder, Jotaka Eaddy. Additional organizers included Holli Holliday. According to the organization’s website, Win With Black Women are doers — led by the spirit of unity and sisterhood.

my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats, it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
The Zoom call reportedly drew an astounding 40,000 attendees and featured an impressive lineup of speakers, including Reps. Joyce Beatty, Maxine Waters, and Jasmine Crockett. The leaders passionately emphasized Black women’s critical role in the upcoming election and shared personal stories about Harris that underscored her qualifications and leadership qualities. Other notable attendees included DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland Senate hopeful Angela Alsobrooks, civil rights leader Bernice King, and Black Voters Matter co-founder LaTosha Brown.
The call highlighted the urgency of fundraising and voter registration as critical strategies for supporting Harris’s campaign. The partic-
Hundreds of community members spoke on the Mayor's proposal for a 30 year lease on a warehouse space on Kettner and Vine. The space would serve as the largest consolidated homeless shelter in the region. Hours of public comment yielded a mix of support and opposition for council members to weigh as they made their decision.
The shelter would be the largest investment the city has ever made, with an annual operation cost of $30 million, monthly rent of $127,000, and an upfront cost of $13 million in renovation to make the space habitable.
The mayor maintains that the congregate shelter is the pathway to significantly curbing the homeless crisis in the City, which has reached over 10,000 individuals.
However, many residents at the meeting slammed the mayor for his proposal citing con-
The power of their sisterhood and actions was felt on Sunday night when they raised over 1.5 Million dollars in less than two hours. Initially, the call began at 8:30 pm and had already reached its capacity of 1,000 participants. At 8:45 pm, the call grew to 3,000. When it ended at 1:00 am, there were still 44,000 supporters on the call praising the efforts of the organizers and sisters on the call.
Since it was a safe space, I will only name a few people who have already been leaked by the press, including Congresswomen Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Maxine Waters (D-CA), and Jasmine Crockett (D-TX). Biden’s decision to drop out of the race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor resets the campaign with a swiftness that is unparalleled in modern American politics.
Once a contest between two older white men, the election will likely force Trump to contend with the much younger Harris, who was consolidating support among Democrats and would be the first woman of color atop a major party’s ticket.
The crumbling of Biden’s Democratic reelection effort, which began with his shaky debate performance against the Republican former president last month, has left both parties scrambling. Although no one has stepped forward to challenge Harris for the Democratic nomination, she still faces the unprecedented challenge of taking over a campaign only four weeks before the party gathers in Chicago for its convention.
At the same time, Trump must pivot his focus to Harris after designing his campaign for a rematch with Biden. Trump’s team claimed

Participants were invited to share about their experiences with hate, presented with the advantage of having the community there with the same motives and the full attention of organizations seeking to support them. One individual shared a story of feeling tension about being unable to prove a crime was hate-motivated after her home was egged. “I feel intimidated because it’s my home.
Enthusiastic attendees expressed their readiness to work tirelessly to elect Harris. “This is work. Roll up your sleeves; we got work to do,” one attendee insisted. Another attendee declared, “Fired up and ready for this moment led by an intergenerational legion of Black women. Let’s get to work. Let’s gather our sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews. Let’s do what Black women do!”
After exiting the race, President Biden’s made clear that his vice president should be the party’s nominee. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my vice president,” Biden said. “And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today, I want to offer
In the hours following Biden’s announcement, Harris’ campaign saw a surge of support, with about $50 million in grassroots donations pouring in. Democratic officials nationwide quickly followed Biden’s lead, voicing their endorsements for Harris. Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina praised Harris, saying, “Kamala Harris should be the next President. I’ve known her since our days as AGs, and she has what it takes to defeat Donald Trump and lead our country thoughtfully and with integrity.”
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York added her voice to the chorus of support: “I’m proud to stand beside Kamala Harris. She is the right candidate to unite our country; I am confident she

The call was off limits to the press, so I attended as an American Black Muslim Woman mother, educator, and community advocate, who is beyond exhausted with the dynamics of race and politics. Tired of hearing folks who are either overly emotional or new to politics weigh in on how they are going to sit this election out and deal with Trump for another four years since they know what he’s capable of…really? Granted, the pain and heartache of the humanitarian disaster happening in Gaza and Rafah are unbearable, but to allow Trump, the former president who implemented a Muslim Ban, destroyed the
it was prepared to run against the vice president, and Republicans stepped up their criticism during the party’s convention last week in Milwaukee.
The shakeup in the presidential race came after an extraordinarily tumultuous month in American politics, starting with an unusually early debate between Biden and Trump.
The June 27 showdown catalyzed concerns that Biden, 81, was too old for a second term. As Democrats pushed to dislodge him from the top of the ticket, Trump survived an assassination attempt on July 13 during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Just a week later, Biden bowed to pressure within his party to step aside. He swiftly endorsed Harris, who is the first woman, Black person and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president.
The breakneck developments left the political world gasping for breath as everyone tried to reorient themselves to a new reality.

In addition, many issues identified in the Independent Budget Analyst’s Office dicey analysis on the shelter proposal were echoed by council members. To allow the man who went from felon to superman overnight to become president again is unacceptable. It’s like playing Russian roulette, especially when our youth’s safety and well-being are at stake.
For me and other sisters, brothers, and allies on the call, pledging our allegiance to support Vice President Kamala Harris’s historical bid to become the Presidential nominee is just the beginning. As of Monday night, July 21, Vice President Harris had secured more than 2500 Delegate pledges for the nomination and raised more than 2 million dollars between the 1.3 million Black women raised on Sunday night and the 1.3 million that more than 1.7 million Black men donors raised on a similar zoom call Monday night with more than 50,000 Black
oldest candidate on the ballot after spending months battering Biden over his age. Harris is only 59, giving her a claim to representing generational change that Biden could never fulfill.
In addition, Harris is a former prosecutor, providing a fresh opportunity to assail Trump’s status as a convicted felon after being found guilty in a hush money trial earlier this year.
She is also the daughter of immigrants, raised by a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, a background that heightens the contrast with Trump, who has used racist, sexist and nativist rhetoric.
Immigration will remain a key line of attack against Democrats, especially because Harris was tasked by Biden to work on migration issues early in the administration.
“They’re still going to run the Gotham City playbook with an added dose of racism and sexism,” said Cornell Belcher, a Democratic pollster.
“And let’s not pretend that those things don’t matter, because they do.”
However, Belcher said, Harris’ “X factor” is her potential appeal to a diversifying electorate.

Governors Janet Mills of Maine, Gavin Newsom of California, and Jared Polis of Colorado echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Harris’s capacity and readiness to lead.
Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin declared, “I’m proud to endorse VP Kamala Harris for President. Today is a new beginning for our party and our country, and I’m excited to keep working together to lower costs for Wisconsin families, grow our Made in America economy, and restore our fundamental rights and freedoms.”
Harris has repeatedly stated the importance of the 2024 election. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” she said.

“I truly believe the real estate transaction at hand is not one that protects taxpayers,” said Councilmember Lee.
Council President Rivera made a motion to return the recommended lease terms and come back with revisions at next Tuesday’s council meeting.
In a statement released after the vote, which came in the late hour of 11 p.m., Mayor Gloria said that his administration is “happy” to continue refining the current proposal, saying that it is imperative council members provide specific negotiating points.

Our own California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer are on the shortlist. But don’t sleep on progressives like Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX). “When you look at her, she is the Democrats’ best chance right now to re-engage and energize that coalition of younger, browner voters,” he said.
Democrats were eager to turn a political weakness that hounded Biden — his age — into an attack on Trump.
“This will probably boil down to Donald Trump, who is the oldest nominee in history, against Kamala Harris,” said Rep. Maxwell Frost, a 27-yearold Democrat from Florida who has worked to reach young voters for Biden’s campaign.
Frost, who endorsed Harris, pointed to the vice president’s work on gun violence protection as an issue that could engage young voters and said she “will be able to win back a lot of the youth vote.”
“She is someone who really values young voices in general,” he said.

VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS AND THE REST OF THE AGENDA
By
The decision of President Biden to step down and pass the torch to Vice President Harris and the outpouring of support in over 2 million dollars in donations in forty-eight hours, along with more than 2500 pledged delegates,
commitments from members of the Congress as well as Governors of several states and the support of grassroots people from all walks of life, gives new meaning to the statement: There is nothing like an idea whose time has come. Clearly America has an opportunity for a truly historic period. Now that Vice President Harris is making good on her promise “to earn the nomination”, it’s up to the rest of us to carry out the agenda that will go with that Presidency.
The agenda includes not only getting Vice President Harris elected, not because she is a woman or because she is Black, but because she is qualified and equipped to do the job. Our “Project 2025” is to give her a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate so that she will have in place lawmakers that can pass the needed legislation to overcome the agendas of the MAGA Republicans committed to blocking her efforts. We can make the difference by voting into office Democrats in each and every state that has a Congressional race. We must be in control of the House of Representatives when the Electoral College votes are counted in January. A failure to regain the House of Representatives will allow the Republican control under Mike Johnson to block or delay the certification necessary for the transition of power to Harris as President.
Every opportunity to elect a Democrat in all 50 states is crucial. Only “we the people” getting out the vote, can
overcome the planned destruction of democracy as we know it.
We must monitor the selection of Electoral College Delegates. We must monitor state efforts to reduce voting opportunities by changing polling sites and removing or reducing ballot boxes. We must ensure we have Voter Registration Officials to carry out the elections. If for some reason we can’t vote, then we must work to register those who can. We must encourage the use of absentee ballots, contact friends and relatives in other states and ensure that they both register and vote. We must make it unacceptable for those around us to tell us they are not going to vote or that their vote won’t count when we know people died to ensure that we have the right to vote.
In Conclusion, our agenda is to not only support the election of Kamala Harris as President of the United States, but to prepare the way for her to have a successful Presidency, and to remove those in office who have already demonstrated a commitment to trampling on the oath of Office they took “to Defend the Constitution of the United States, so Help Them God.”
The rest of the agenda is up to us both now, and all campaign challenges that stand to block our President To Be.
DEMOCRACY IS ON THE BALLOT
TRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
God placed something on my heart that I would like to share with everyone. Politicians never do the right thing unless a moral witness, a prophetic Wing or an ethical enclave stands before them and demand change.
Abraham Lincoln did not free the slaves because he felt like it, but he was forced into Glory by the moral witness of the likes of Frederick Douglass. FDR did not create the new deal because it was a good idea, but he was forced into Glory by the moral witness of people who demanded action during the Great Depression. Lyndon Baines Johnson did not sign the Civil Rights bill and the Civil Rights Act because it was a nice idea, but he was forced into Glory by the work of Martin Luther King Jr, John Lewis, and Fanny Lou Hamer and others.
Unfortunately, in our American political system, candidates and parties are beholden to special interest, but never forget We The People have power. We The People, Black people, kissed by Nature’s Son have power. We have power. Power in our vote, we have power in organizing, we have power with our pocketbook, we have power with our voice, and we have spiritual power connected to our faith. Black people have historically saved America from itself. Black people have historically been a moral witness demanding this democracy include all who yearn to breathe free. I believe the choice this November is not between two candidates, but two visions of this nation. One Vision romanticizes the Confederate mythology that was birthed from the Antebellum South. Another Vision still sees America as the yet to be United States of America.
I cannot support any Vision, you can vote for whoever you want to, but I cannot support any Vision that speaks to making America Great Again because my conscience and my soul tell me when a person states America with the past tense language, “was great”, I must speak up and say what year are you talking
about? Was it before I could vote? Or was it a year I was considered nothing more than chattel? Was it a year when women did not have the right to vote or was it the year before unions had been organized? I cannot support anyone’s false Nostalgia of white supremacy. I believe democracy is on the ballot for some and I understand it, the only issue is the horror, tragedy, pain, and destruction of human thriving in the occupied territory we call Gaza. For others it is Gaza, the Congo, the Sudan, and Haiti, but I say to us all we must look at all issues foreign and domestic. The question before us is, what will this country be not for our children, not for our grandchildren, but for our great grandchildren.
We must as a church, and when I speak of the church, I said we must as the Black church collectively, not churches that just have Black people in them. I’m talking about the Black church of Frederick Douglas, the Black church of Harriet Tubman, the Black church of W.E.B. Dubois, and The Souls of Black Folk. The Black church of A Philip Randolph, the Black church of Ida B. Wells, the Black church of Ella Baker, the Black church of James Lawson, the Black church of Willie Barrow, the Black church of Jesse Jackson, the Black church of Jeremiah Wright, the Black church of James Cone, and the Black church of Martin Luther King Jr. The question for us today, since democracy is on the ballot, is will we stand up for the 295,000 people who die as a result of poverty every year. The question for us today, since democracy is on the ballot, will we speak for the 87 million people who are uninsured in this nation. The question for us today since democracy is on the ballot, will we stand up for people such as members in this congregation who have to decide whether to pay their rent or purchase prescription drugs. The question for us today since democracy is on the ballot, will we stand with our Union sisters and brothers who are under attack by corporations who want to outlaw unions. For those who do not know, unions ended child labor, unions created the 40-hour work week, unions created the 8-hour work day, unions provided unemployment benefits, workers compensation, and your retirement benefits. That is because of the work of unions.
The question for us today since democracy is on the ballot, will we fight for HBCUs. They are being attacked across this nation where conservative legislators want the land that our historically black colleges sit upon. They are coming after North Carolina ANT, they're coming after North Carolina Central University, they’re coming after Florida A&M, they’re coming after Alabama A&M, Jackson State, Albany State, Fort Valley Southern, any state institution that is a historically black college.
Since democracy is on the ballot, will women, let me say it again. Will women, not men. Will women, not men, but will women, have the autonomy to make medical decisions about their body, and will people of Faith be present to offer compassion, love, prayer, and support, regardless of their decision. Will we fight to ensure that every returning citizen has full citizenship rights after they've served their time in prison.
Since democracy is on the ballot, will we seek to abolish the penal system of incarceration that is destroying our community? Since democracy is on the ballot, will we vote to protect our right to vote across this nation; conservative legislators are passing laws to restrict voting rights and gerrymandering districts to dilute Black political power. Since democracy is on the ballot, will we fight to protect this planet as we are seeing the effects of climate change, right here in Chicago. Since democracy is on the ballot, you must know there are 46 judicial appointments the next President will make that will reshape voting rights, unionization, homelessness, and even possibly, outlaw historically Black colleges. Since democracy is on the ballot, I’m not a one issue voter, but I am a voter who votes to protect Black issues.
Since democracy is on the ballot, I’m asking today, right now, everyone in this Village, if you are a registered voter, if you are an organizer, if you are part of a union, if you lead a block Club, if you are a local activist. It’s time for us to get together as a community, and collectively as a church, and do what our ancestors have done, generation after generation, and save this nation from itself. Democracy is on the ballot. Now I said what I said, and I ain’t taking it back!

One is they want to draw you to their website that they advertise on the flier, and number two is they want you to put it out on social media so they can get it out even further,” he shared. “If anybody sees a flier or that type of thing, don't put it out on social media. Draw it to law enforcement’s attention, so they understand for their own situational awareness what's going on in the community.”
Hate crimes themselves were far from the only topic to come up – healing and coping also drove the conversation. Matt Goldberg of the Jewish Fed-

“Some of them are very vibrant and are still telling their story and still doing what they consider their life's work, which is to preach and live ‘never again,’” he said, referring to the widely adopted slogan around Holocaust education. “Nobody wants to be a victim, and even people who fit the definition of ‘victims,’ they don't want that to be their identity. … Many of our survivors were not able to talk about the horrors that they experienced for years and years and years… Whatever you experience, you want to overcome, and that's what we do as

California Rep. Adam Schiff Courts Black Voters in San Diego
30th Congressional Rep. Adam Schiff tells San Diegans what he will do for Black workers, shares thoughts on Harris’ campaign for president, and what it will take for Democrats to win this November
As a stop on his campaign trail for United States Senator, California Rep. Adam Schiff visited San Diego Friday to speak with Black voters and local labor unions on worker rights, socioeconomic disparities, and the Democratic strategy for the 2024 election.
“If the state gets a cold, we [Black citizens] get pneumonia,” said Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber during Schiff’s roundtable discussion held at United Domestic Workers Local 3930 headquarters in District 4.
Secretary Weber’s comments echo a widespread frustration among Black voters, and is one Schiff says he aims to target both legislatively as a representative and through his campaign for state senate. As many Californians grapple with affording basic necessities like housing, childcare, and healthcare, Black Californians face these challenges at disproportionately higher rates—highlighting the demand for elected officials to actively engage and listen to the needs of the Black constituents they seek to represent.
• 19% of the city’s homeless population are Black, despite making up 6% of the population.
• Black San Diegans are four times more likely to experience food insecurity.
Doug Moore, Executive Director of UDW Homecare Providers Union/AFSCME Local 3930 arranged the meeting at the UDW/ AFSCME Local 3930 headquarters on Seminole Drive. During the discussion, key topics mentioned were how Schiff can best represent the minority working class through these issues.
“I am really focused on trying to make the economy work for people again, so that people can afford a home, so that they can afford childcare for their kids, so you don’t have people not able to join the workforce—which is often people of color and women of color,” said Schiff.
Black workers across San Diego have an unemployment rate of 16% and make up 25% of essential low wage working jobs. Executive Director of the Black Worker Center Brisa Johnson attributes this to systemic racism and labor discrimination within the regional workforce.
Schiff, who represents California’s 30th district in Los Angeles, is currently running for U.S. Senator against Republican former baseball player Steve Garvey. During his opening remarks, Schiff maintained that he was “conscious” of a lot of the issues affecting the Black community overall, but wanted to explore more of the impacts here in San Diego.
The State of Black San Diego at a Glance
Key issues Schiff’s campaign centers around include homelessness, housing, and affordability. Recent data produced by the San Diego Foundation provides evidence on where San Diego is at in terms of these issues.
• More than half of Black San Diegans spend more than 30% of their household income on housing alone.
• Black San Diegans are twice as likely to have no health insurance.
“We’re very aware of our circumstances; we live in systems of oppression and racism every single day. So we need to have conversations on what the strategy actually looks like and what that investment looks like,” said Johnson.
As a way to target the concerns coming from minority workers, parts of Schiff’s affordability agenda proposes to make childcare affordable, lower the cost of education, strengthen employment laws and healthcare reductions.
During the roundtable, Schiff also elaborated on how he felt about President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. Schiff has made headlines in recent weeks for being one of the first high-ranking Democrats to call for Biden to step down as the nominee.
“I have great respect and great affection for him,
so it wasn’t something I came to lightly. He has the most impressive record of any president in a single term,” said Schiff.
Harris’ “knowledge, experience, and stature,” Harris could be the pick to win, “potentially overwhelmingly.”
“Changing the nominee this late in the game is a risky thing to do, but proceeding along a path you are convinced is the wrong direction is a potentially bigger risk.” — California Rep. Adam Schiff
Schiff cited instances such as the debate and its aftermath as factors that “convinced” him that Biden was most likely not going to win, but it is also his disdain for another Trump presidency.
“Having seen the terrible destruction that he brought to our country and the horrible bigotry and division, I felt the need to do everything I can to make sure that he never sits in that office again,” said Schiff, who also served on the Jan. 6th Select Committee that investigated the attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021.
“Changing the nominee this late in the game is a risky thing to do, but proceeding along a path you are convinced is the wrong direction is a potentially bigger risk.”
When prompted, Schiff revealed last Friday that, given current Vice President Kamala
President Biden announced his official step down as the nominee on Sunday with an endorsement of current Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Power of the Black Vote
“Every city that has a Black vote is a battleground location,” said Dr. John E. Warren, Publisher of Voice & Viewpoint, during the discussion with Schiff.
The voting power of Black communities can significantly influence election outcomes, making these locations essential for any party aiming to secure a victory. Despite this significance, members voiced their frustration over ongoing voter suppression and the insufficient investment from political action committees.
“Investing in the Black vote across the country— not just in Georgia, or South Carolina— is the pathway to winning in November and not just for the President, but for taking back the house, for maintaining the senate,” said Christopher Wilson, Vice President of Operations at PowerPAC, a social justice organization that supports progressive local and state elections.
After the roundtable, Schiff joined a crowd of UDW members to talk about his campaign and his dedication to worker rights.
As the November elections approach, Schiff’s efforts to connect with Black voters and his stance on key issues like housing and healthcare demonstrate a strategic push to harness the influential power of the Black vote for Democratic success.

Malaria Vaccination Campaign Launches for Children in Ivory Coast
By Hilaire Zon Associated Press
Health workers in Ivory Coast began giving children the latest malaria vaccine on Monday, the beginning of a regional campaign that experts hope might curb the impact of one of Africa's top killers.
The West African country became the first to start rolling out the newest shot targeting malaria in an effort that aims to cover about 250,000 children under two. The three-dose vaccine known as R21/Matrix-M was developed by Britain's Oxford University and was authorized by the World Health Organization last October.
Research suggests it is more than 75% effective at preventing severe disease and death in the first year and that protection is extended for at least another year with a booster.
Alice Kanga was one of many who brought their children to get vaccinated on July 16th. “It’s really important for the children, for their health," she said.
In 2021, WHO endorsed the first malaria vaccine, known as Mosquirix, made by GSK. But that vaccine requires four doses and protection fades within months. GSK also previously said it would only be able to make about 15 million doses.
But India's Serum Institute has already made 25 million doses of the Oxford vaccine and says it plans to make at least 100 million every year, at a cost of about $4 per dose.
More than 94% of the world's roughly 249 million malaria cases and 608,000 deaths every year are in Africa. The parasitic disease is spread by mosquitoes and most often strikes children under five and pregnant women.
Pierre Demba, Ivory Coast's health minister, said the malaria vaccination launch was an indication of the government's commitment to invest in the country's children. "They are the future of our country,” he said.
Adrian Hill of Oxford University said in a statement that the Ivory Coast roll-out “marks the start of a new era in malaria control,” adding that he hoped the shot would soon be available to all countries in Africa who wanted to use it.
Still, because malaria vaccines don't stop the spread of the disease, experts have long warned that other measures like insecticide spraying, improved treatments and the use of bed nets will still be critical.
The Gavi vaccine alliance, which helps poor countries buy vaccines, said other countries including the Central African Republic, Chad and South Sudan have also received supplies of the Oxford-developed shot.
Gambian Parliament Rejects Bid to Overturn Ban on Female Genital Mutilation
By Nimi Princewill CNN
Gambia’s parliament has voted to uphold a landmark law that bans female genital mutilation (FGM) in the largely Muslim nation, after religious groups pushed for the legislation to be repealed.
If Monday [July 16]’s bid had been successful, the tiny West African country would have been the first in the world to relegalize FGM after criminalizing it.
MP Amadou Camara, who chairs a joint health and gender committee that recommended that FGM should remain outlawed, told CNN that none of the clauses seeking the repeal of the ban in the Women’s (Amendment) Bill 2024 was passed.
Parliament Speaker Fabakary Jatta ruled that it was “impossible” for the bill, which passed a second reading four months ago, to be read a third time and to pass without those clauses. “I so rule that the bill is rejected, and the legislative process exhausted,” Jatta said at plenary meeting Monday.
FGM was prohibited in Gambia in 2015 by former president Yahya Jammeh who authorized the imposition of fines and prison sentences of up to three years for individuals who engaged in it.
The law also punished perpetrators with life sentences in cases where the practice led to death.
Pro-Islamic groups and lawmakers pushed
back against the criminalization, saying that female circumcision was “one of the virtues of Islam.”
Other prominent Gambians, such as opposition leader and former interior minister Mai Ahmad Fatty also defended the practice, arguing that: “There is no FGM in Gambia. We circumcise, not mutilate.”
Human rights organization Amnesty International earlier described efforts to revoke the FGM ban as a “backward move” for the protection of human rights in the country. In Gambia, 73% of women aged between 15 and 49 years had experienced FGM as of 2020, according to the United Nations. More than 65% of those women were subjected to the practice “before the age of five years,” the UN said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Women’s Day in March that he was “outraged” by moves by Gambia’s parliament to legalize FGM, describing the practice as “horrific.”
Despite the ban, FGM has still been performed on children in parts of the country. Last year, three women were convicted of performing the practice on eight female minors and ordered to pay fines of around 15,000 Gambian Dalasi ($220) each or face a oneyear jail sentence. The penalties were reported to have been paid by an Islamic cleric.
In 2016, two women also faced charges after a 5-month-old girl died from genital mutilation.
Why Africa Is Doubling Down On Its Space Ambitions
By Amy Gunia CNN
As a child in Ivory Coast, West Africa, Tidiane Ouattara would gather with friends in his village to stargaze. The group, who dubbed themselves “the Moon Club,” would lay on the ground, looking up at the cosmos.
“The young people, they’re willing to be in this space era”
–Tidiane Ouattara
His childhood interest in space never waned, and in 1994 it led him to Canada, where he earned a PhD in remote sensing and geographical information systems. He planned to return to Africa when he finished, but he was dissuaded by a civil war in Ivory Coast and a lack of technology.
Now Ouattara is helping to lead Africa into space. In 2016, he joined the African Union Commission (AUC), where he worked on its space strategy. Early this year, Ouattara became the first president of the African Space Council, which oversees the newly inaugurated
African Space Agency (AfSA).
Africa’s space industry could be worth $22.6 billion by 2026, up from $19.5 billion in 2021, according to the consultancy Space in Africa. The AfSA could help supercharge that growth and improve the lives of Africans in the meantime. “It is a huge opportunity for us,” said Ouattara.
After several years in the making, the AfSA was officially inaugurated in January 2023, and it signed an agreement to make Cairo, Egypt its headquarters. The AUC has laid out a six-year implementation plan for the agency, with a budget of more than $35 million to reach full operationalization, according to Temidayo Oniosun, the managing director of Space in Africa.
“We Want To Improve Our Daily Lives”
ulations faced issues like a lack of access to clean water. Ouattara said that African leaders are now convinced that investing in the space sector can improve terrestrial life.
Africa sent its first satellite into orbit more than 20 years ago. But more pressing priorities and a lack of resources has limited progress.
When Ouattara first returned to Africa, he says he fielded questions from officials about why they should care about space when their pop -
Africa has around 60 satellites in orbit, which can be used to boost agricultural yields, surveil borders, monitor water quality, and prevent illegal mining and fishing. Better data from Earth observation could unlock more than $2 billion in value for Africa, according to a 2021 report by the World Economic Forum.
Ouattara points to other tangible benefits. A few years ago, a fisherman’s association in Ghana began providing weather forecasts – based on satellite information – to locals who use traditional canoes that can be dangerous in bad conditions. Ouattara said that from 2017 to 2022, there was only one canoeing death, compared to about 15 to 18 deaths annually before the system was implemented.
Creating Space For The Next Generation
Africa’s population is set to grow to at least 2.4 billion people by 2050, per the African Development Bank Group. For Ouattara, that’s a “big market to consume space-derived products.”
He hopes Africans can take the driver’s seat in every part of the space value chain – from building satellites and ground infrastructure to launching satellites to services and creating products based on space information to help Africans manage their daily lives.
There are some practical matters for the AfSA to attend to – like finalizing the members of its 10-per-
son council and recruiting a director general who will oversee daily operations – but Ouattara has no doubt about what the priorities should be for boosting Africa’s space industry.
A workforce will need to be trained in everything from space diplomacy and law, to how to build small, affordable satellites.
“It’s about better accessibility to high quality data that can provide valuable insights in different areas,” said Oniosun, of Space in Africa.
“And then applications upon this data that can actually address critical problems on the continent.”
While not competing with national agencies, it will create a regulatory framework and coordinate space activities across the continent to enhance efficiency and make it easier for foreign partners, like the European Space Agency, to collaborate with Africa because they can work through the AfSA, instead of approaching countries individually.
“The young people, they’re willing to be in this space era,” said Ouattara. “But we have to build strong curricula and once trained, to use them properly, to create opportunities to employ them.”
HEALTHY LIVING
Start the School Year Strong and Prevent Illness in Children
Th
e excitement of a new school year unfolds each year when families flood the superstore aisles to buy classroom supplies, tape afterschool schedules on the fridge and organize carpools with friends.
Common to each family is a desire for children to remain healthy, active and ready to learn.
To prepare children and teens to be at their best – physically, mentally, socially and emotionally – the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends regular visits with the pediatrician, as well as immunizations that help keep all family members healthy. Recent outbreaks of measles, a highly contagious disease, have shown how quickly some infectious diseases can spread within a community.
“The best way to strengthen a child’s immune system and keep them healthy is by getting them vaccinated,” said pediatrician, Dr. David M. Higgins. “An illness like measles can keep children home and away from school and activities for days. Immunizations allow children to enjoy learning, playing and getting together with friends and family.”
As of June 13, 2024, a total of 151 U.S. measles cases were reported this year-to-date in 21 different states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These recent measles outbreaks have affected unvaccinated people. Choosing to not vaccinate your children not only leaves them susceptible to measles, but also exposes other children to this potentially serious disease. This includes
infants who are too young to be vaccinated and those who are unable to be vaccinated due to other health conditions.
“Everyone in our community deserves to be healthy, and part of being healthy means getting immunized for all illnesses, including influenza and COVID-19 and, if eligible, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It benefits all of us if every child in our community is vaccinated, because it means that all of us are more likely to be healthy,” says Dr. Higgins.
Families can also stop the spread of infection by encouraging hand washing with children throughout the day. Help or remind them to wash their hands:

The AAP calls for the immunization of all children and adolescents according to its policy, Recommended Immunization Schedules for Children and Adolescents Aged 18 Years or Younger, United States.
“Your pediatrician can answer any questions about recommended vaccines and when your child needs them,” Dr. Higgins said. “There is a schedule for their recommended timing because that is when research has shown they are most effective during a child’s development.”

“Demand for skilled and knowledgeable labor in the constantly evolving field of technology continues to grow. To meet these demands, new pathways, outside of those offered by four-year or degree-bearing institutions, are also on the rise,” said Jhacole LeGrand Dunn, senior director of pathways research and design at Digital Promise.
“What remains consistent in this market is a need for equity and diversity in access and representation in these opportunities. Black voices are critical to successful and sustainable growth in the field of technology. Ensuring access and representation for us all will ultimately benefit future growth and advancement for the field as a whole.”

Signs and Symptoms to Lookout For:
FDA Yet to Ban Menthols and Hair Relaxers
As reported by Word in Black, over the past two years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has grappled with promises to safeguard consumers, particularly Black Americans, from harmful chemicals in everyday products. Despite mounting evidence linking formaldehyde in hair relaxers and menthol in cigarettes to severe health risks, the FDA's regulatory efforts have been sluggish and beset by delays.
Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen present in hair relaxers and keratin treatments, poses significant health hazards through inhalation and skin contact, yet its use persists due to its effectiveness in hair care. Studies, such as those from Boston University's Black Women's Health Study, underscore the elevated risks of cancer among Black women who frequently use these products.
Since 2011, when the FDA began investigating formaldehyde in hair products, little progress has been made beyond warning letters and proposed rules, with missed deadlines further stalling decisive action. Manufacturers argue for the efficacy and safety of formaldehyde, pushing back against stricter regulations that could curb consumer choice.
Similarly, menthol, favored by 85% of Black smokers, exacerbates nicotine addiction and masks the harshness of tobacco, making menthol cigarettes more appealing and addictive, especially among teens.
Alongside the report, Digital Promise has released a video, Lift Every Voice in Tech: Inspiring Change Through the Experiences of Black Learners and Workers, showcasing the successes and challenges faced by two Black learners and workers based in Detroit, Michigan, in their pursuit of technology careers— in their own words. By recognizing and addressing the needs of Black learners and workers, partners such as training providers, employers and hiring managers, funders, and educational institutions can strengthen equitable and sustainable pathways in technology.
Despite calls for a ban dating back decades and a 2021 announcement signaling intent to ban menthol cigarettes, opposition from tobacco lobbyists has delayed final rulings.
The FDA's track record reflects a pattern of faltering commitments and regulatory inertia, contrasting sharply with the urgent health risks faced by Black communities. Efforts by lawmakers like Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Shontel Brown highlight the disproportionate impact on Black consumers, who have historically been targeted by tobacco marketing and exposed to hazardous chemicals without adequate regulatory protection.
While the FDA cites ongoing prioritization and rulemaking processes, the tangible outcomes — bans on formaldehyde and menthol — remain elusive, leaving Black Americans vulnerable to preventable health crises. Despite broader public health initiatives aimed at smoking cessation and health equity, the FDA's failure to meet its own deadlines underscores systemic challenges in protecting marginalized communities from corporate interests and regulatory inertia.
This report follows Digital Promise’s landscape report, Understanding the Supports and Skills that Enable Successful Pathways for Black Learners and Workers into NonFour-Year Degree Technology Careers: A Landscape Scan, which provides historical perspectives on the Black experience in the U.S. technology industry. By centering and elevating the experiences of these learners and workers in this research, Digital Promise aims to positively impact the recruitment and retention of Black representation and access to technology-driven fields and increase the number of Black learners and workers who succeed in life sustaining careers in technology.

WILLIE MAE “BIG MAMA” THORNTON PASSES AWAY
Emmett Till, a 14year-old African American boy from Chicago born on July 25th 1941, was brutally murdered in 1955 in Money, Mississippi, after allegedly offending a white woman. His killers, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, abducted, tortured, and threw his mutilated body into the Tallahatchie River. Despite overwhelming evidence, an all-white jury acquitted the men after a brief deliberation. Mamie Till-Bradley defiantly displayed her son's disfigured body at his funeral, sparking national outrage and galvanizing the Civil Rights Movement. Emmett Till's death brought attention to the pervasive racism and injustice faced by African Americans in the United States.
W.E.B. DU BOIS GIVES FAMOUS “TO THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD” SPEECH
W.E.B. Du Bois (18681963) was a prominent African American civil rights activist, sociologist, historian, and writer who profoundly influenced the fight for racial equality in the United States. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois experienced both the promise and challenges of racial integration from an early age. His academic excellence earned him scholarships to attend Fisk University and later Harvard University, where he became the first African American to earn a doctorate.
W.E.B. Du Bois would eventually emerge as a founder of the NAACP, a leading human rights activist and the most important African American intellectual of the 20th Century. However those developments lay in the future when the 32-year-old DuBois gave the closing address at the first Pan African Convention. He used the occasion to utter one of his most quoted statements, “The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line…” Du Bois’s remarks were given on July 25, 1900 at the convention meeting site, Westminster Hall in London.

In today’s world, apps are crucial for business growth and customer experience. They enable shopping, appointment setting and customer service interactions. In fact, around three-quarters of U.S. adults say they buy things online using a smartphone, according to Pew Research, which means if you don’t have an app for your business, you’re leaving money on the table. However, if building one sounds daunting, experts say there is good news -- artificial intelligence can help.
“AI enhances app development through code generation, chatbots, process optimization, content creation, user stories and prototype generation. Anyone, even with little to no experience, can quickly and cost-effectively develop an app using AI,” says Sachin Dev Duggal, founder and chief wizard at Builder. ai, an AI-powered composable software platform that allows every business and entrepreneur to become digitally powered.
Despite the relative ease of developing an app harnessing today’s AI tech, it’s nevertheless important to get your app right. With over 77% of users uninstalling an app within the first three days after download, according to WifiTalents, you’ll want to ensure your app provides your users with real value.
So, before building your app, first consider how it will help customers, and how it will help you solve your short- and long-term business objectives. Asking yourself these questions can give you clarity on the type of app you need, how you will fund and main -

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, a blues singer and songwriter, recorded "Hound Dog" and "Ball 'n' Chain," later popularized by Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin. Born in rural Alabama in 1926, Thornton embarked on a career in entertainment after leaving home at 14. She joined the Hot Harlem Revue and later signed with Peacock Records in Houston in 1951. Thornton's rendition of "Hound Dog" topped the R&B charts, selling over two million copies. Despite her early success, Thornton faced financial challenges. She continued performing and recording through the 1960s and 1970s, collaborating with blues legends like Muddy Waters and recording albums for labels like Arhoolie and Mercury. Thornton's health declined due to alcoholism, but she continued performing until her death in 1984 on July 25th, leaving a lasting legacy in blues music.
