Trump’s Narrow Popular Vote Victory Fuels Questions of Mandate

Donald Trump’s return to the presidency has ignited debates about his legitimacy and a surge of interest in emigration. While Trump won all seven swing states and secured the presidency, his share of the popular vote—49.83%—places him among the least popular modern American presidents. His 1.55% margin over Vice President Kamala

Harris falls far short of historical landslides like Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 triumph, where Johnson won 61.1% of the popular vote.

And with a growing number of Trump voters expressing buyer’s remorse, many political analysts have questioned whether the election victory reflects broad public support for his policies. “If there ever was a mandate, this isn’t it,” Georgetown University political scientist Hans Noel told MSN

Congressman James E. Clyburn (SC-06), Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), and Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) led 60 of their colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden urging him to use his executive clemency power in the final months of his presidency to reunite families, address longstanding injustices in our legal system, and set our nation on the path toward ending mass incarceration.

scrutiny to claims of a sweeping mandate.

African Innovation: The Visionary Behind Klaman & Co

Born in Montreal, Canada and raised in Cote d'Ivoire, Johanne Gnagne, CEO and Founder of Klaman & Co, heads a company with a brand aimed at showcasing the broadness of African culture. With Klaman & Co, Gnagne envisions “a platform to involve all Africans that were born on the continent, as well as the whole diaspora regardless [of] where they are from.” Gnagne is on a mission to introduce the African experience to adults and youth alike, bring local African organizations together, and to encourage entre-

preneurship in the younger generations.

Klaman in the Akan language means “beauty” or “sophistication”, the very reason Gnagne named the organization as she did, “to carry the beauty of Africa,” she says.

As of the 100th anniversary of Shirley Chisholm’s birth on November 30, a growing effort to honor her legacy has taken shape. Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress in 1968 and a trailblazer for equality and justice, remains a powerful symbol of courage and leadership. San Diego Mourns A Favorite Son: Mike Norris

He was a recorder of our history with his ever present camera; a guardian and keeper of that history as it was being made on a day to day basis. He was known and appreciated, his loss will forever be felt going forward.

Mike Norris was a native San Diegan who some remember back as far as Memorial Jr. High School. But he also had a life in Oakland and Sacramento, California where he spent his life when not in San Diego. He passed last week leaving an empty chair at Thanksgiving Dinner tables and pictures that will never be recorded. While he covered just about everything that took place in San Diego at some point during the last 60 years, one of his favorites was the OG Sand Box Annual Cookout for which he documented over three decades of participants through a photo collection of members who had passed, and which he published and shared with those who were continuing the tradition.

Mike Norris, for more years than we can remember, had been a lead photographer for the San Diego Voice & Viewpoint Newspaper So much so he became synonymous with Voice & Viewpoint. No event was too small or too large. He was the ultimate professional with his cameras, which we all saw as a part of him.

While arrangements are incomplete as of press time, we will publish online as soon as notified. Preferred Cremation and Burial is handling the services.

Butler, the bill’s primary sponsor, has garnered backing from key lawmakers, including Democratic Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. The legislation seeks to award Chisholm one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, cementing her place as one of the most transformative figures in American history.

Coast. Queries about moving to New Zealand climbed nearly 2,000%, while those for Australia rose 820%. According to Google data, searches for emigration had reached historic levels.

Cornell University professor Peter Enns, whose model accurately predicted Trump’s swing state victories, said economic dissatisfaction during Joe Biden’s presidency played a key role in voter decisions. “If this election can be explained by what voters thought of Biden and Harris and economic conditions, it really goes against the notion of a mandate for major change from Trump,” Enns told the Guardian newspaper.

In the wake of Trump’s win, many Americans have begun looking for opportunities abroad. Google reported a 1,270% spike in searches for “move to Canada” as polls closed on the East

Growing up in Cote d'Ivoire molded her into the woman she is today, Gnagne says. Her multicultural background and extensive professional expertise in Project Management led her to identify a significant industry gap—an absence of authentic experiences reflecting the true essence of African cultural richness. Her mission with Klaman & Co is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of African culture by connecting people of all backgrounds through authentic experiences. Experiences include but are not limited to, cultural events, education, African artwork, textiles, and other curated products.

“The idea is to use our culture and our identity, not ignoring where we are from and who we are, but to use it [to become] great entrepreneurs,” states Gnagne.

Gnagne tailors her events to create exposure to African countries attendees normally wouldn’t experience and get to know. “People can’t just travel there easily, but when you attend an event you meet with people, you try the food,

Immigration lawyers across North America have been inundated with inquiries. “Every half hour, there’s a new email enquiry,” said Evan Green, managing partner at Green and Spiegel, Canada’s oldest immigration law firm. Green noted that clients’ concerns extend beyond Trump himself to broader societal divisions. “The majority of Americans voted for him, and some people don’t feel comfortable living in that kind of society anymore. People are afraid they are going to lose freedoms.”

you have stories to tell, and you have a whole vibe you can enjoy,” Gnagne emphasizes.

As a current Project Manager for the Clinical Services and Financial Affairs for UC San Diego Health Sciences International Department, Gnagne develops, implements, monitors, and manages projects with UCSD partners. Applying similar skills to her platform, Gnagne is working on launching the nonprofit side of Klaman & Co in the next year.

Gnagne aims for the launch to center around entrepreneurship and mentorship, focused on amplifying cultural representation efforts with the younger generation. “The idea would be to work on capacity building and coach youth and young adults into mentorship for 2025,” states Gnagne.

“The environment has so much influence on the mindset,” reflects Gnage, “Everybody should have an entrepreneur mindset whether they intend to have a business or not. It makes day-to-day life easier. How to connect with people, the importance of connecting with people, relationship building, a network, the importance of acquired knowledge, the importance of knowing that the sky is the limit and

For those seeking guidance, destinations such as Panama City, Budapest, Belize, and Phuket, Thailand, are being recommended for American expats. The locations reportedly offer affordable living and pathways to residency.

Diaspora Citizenship in Ghana

In Ghana, the African diaspora is reconnecting with its roots. On November 19, 524 diaspora members received Ghanaian citizen-

ship during a landmark Accra International Conference Centre ceremony. The event, part of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the diaspora, builds on the success of the 2019 “Year of Return” campaign.

“Your ancestors left these shores under tragic and inhumane circumstances,” Akufo-Addo exclaimed. “Today, we reclaim that connection by welcoming you as part of our Ghanaian family.” He reminded attendees that the initiative goes beyond symbolism, providing tangible opportunities for the diaspora to shape Africa’s future.

“Being Ghanaian is about embracing values such as respect, equity, and peace,” Akufo-Addo said. “These principles are at the heart of our identity, and we invite you to embody them as you integrate into our society.”

But this started from “our parent’s generation”, says Gnagne. “They came here as refugees, not all of them had an education. Our moms were taught how to cook and do things with their hands, but as they moved here they never really had the mentorship or coaching to sell what they have and make it as an income.”

“Our idea is to be the platform where we can be the providers of catering restaurants, performers, artists, painters, and everything that is around the African continent, as a way to promote what they do and for bigger platforms to find out about them as well. We want to bring all the elements together.”

The goal for Klaman & Co is not to be another organization in San Diego but to be a platform where African organizations in San Diego can all come together and have one strong voice.

“It has been challenging trying to contact African organizations that want to be a part of something bigger than themselves in San Diego,” explains Gnagne, “As Africans of

The lawmakers hosted a press conference [on November 19th] to discuss the letter.

“Now is the time to use your clemency authority to rectify unjust and unnecessary criminal laws passed by Congress and draconian sentences given by judges,” the lawmakers wrote in their letter. “The grant of pardons and commutations and the restoration of rights will undoubtedly send a powerful message across the country in support of fundamental fairness and furthering meaningful criminal justice reform.”

Mass incarceration remains a persistent, systemic injustice that erodes the soul of America. Our nation has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with nearly two million people locked in jails and prisons throughout the country. The extreme use of incarceration has resulted in one in two adults having had an incarcerated family member. People of color are disproportionately put behind bars, along with individuals from low-income communities, LGBTQIA+ folks, and those with disabilities. The bloated prison system reflects and emboldens biases that undermine the ideals of our nation and diminish trust in the rule of law. Mass incarceration attacks the most vulnerable Americans, thereby destabilizing families and inflicting intergenerational trauma.

In their letter to President Biden, the lawmakers praised the President’s efforts to create a fair and just criminal legal system by pardoning people convicted of simple marijuana possession and LGBTQ+ former servicemembers and urged the President to use his clemency powers to help broad classes of people and cases, including the elderly and chronically ill, those on death row,

“If you are able to make a difference, people will not care about your skin color,” Gnagne says, “Only [your] own limitations will limit [you].”

Gnagne is hoping that with Klaman & Co’s Annual Africa Vibe Festival, African organizations around San Diego can come together to bring the spirit of Africa to life.

“I don’t believe in working in silence. You may have a vision but you cannot execute a vision yourself. I cannot pretend to know other cultures. It’s about how we can work with different organizations and different groups from the theme, the music, the artwork, the vendors. At the end of the day when people come to an event their perception changes about Africa. That’s all we can hope for.”

people with unjustified sentencing disparities, and women who were punished for defending themselves against their abusers. The lawmakers also outlined the fiscal toll of the growing mass incarceration crisis.

“You have the support of millions of people across the country who have felt the harms of mass incarceration: young children longing to hug their grandparents, people who have taken responsibility for their mistakes, and those who simply were never given a fair chance,” the lawmakers wrote. “These are the people seeking help that only you can provide through the use of your presidential clemency power.”

Joining Representatives Clyburn, Pressley, and Scanlon in sending the letter are Representatives Joyce Beatty, Sanford Bishop, Shontel Brown, Cori Bush, André Carson, Troy Carter, Yvette Clarke, Jasmine Crockett, Valerie Foushee, Al Green, Jahana Hayes, Steven Horsford, Jonathan Jackson, Pramila Jayapal, Henry Johnson, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Robin Kelly, Summer Lee, Jennifer McClellan, Gregory Meeks, Delia Ramirez, Jan Schakowsky, Robert Scott, Terri Sewell, Marilyn Strickland, Bennie Thompson, Rashida Tlaib, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.

EDITORIAL/COMMENTARY/OPINION

TRUMP’S PEOPLE, AND PLANS AND HOW WE RESPOND

So far we have seen President Elect Donald Trump nominate a host of unqualified people for key positions in an effort to ensure this time that he has full control of government from day one. We have also seen some push back and we can expect more as Mr. Trump learns that being king is a lot more difficult than being President.

Before we go into collective fear mode from anticipating Project 2025 and the dismantling of our democracy, let us remember that we the people remain the ultimate safeguard to keeping our system of government with its checks and balances. First, beyond Cabinet Appointments, we have a Civil Service Merit System with built in rights and appeals for employees covered under this Act. The Court challenges that will come with such

an effort to remove so many people will be overwhelming to the legal system even before the Supreme Court is reached. To dismantle programs and departments will require public notice of such proposed changes with a 45 day comment period. Every American has a right to write their comments about any and all proposed changes and there is a required period for review of such comments.

Next, the Executive Orders that the President will sign must be published in the Federal Register. This means that Trump, who would be King, still does not have freedom to act without transparency. We the people must pay attention to all Executive Orders that are issued and be prepared to challenge where necessary as an act of not giving up control of our lives and our government.

Third, we must remember why there is such a rush to accomplish all these things during the first 100 days. While Trump won the Electoral College Vote, a review of the recent election will reveal that not every Republican running for office got elected along with Donald Trump. We must make sure that his control of the House of Representatives ends with the Mid-Term Elections in 24 months.

We must not react in fear to such ideas as abolishing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Those elements were never about Black People but rather keeping our struggle diluted with other ethnic causes so as to weaken our focus. We the people, and We as Black People, still have the ability to neutralize “King Trump” and his plans to rule America. We have a Constitution to stand on that can be only as strong as our support of it. We have the collective ability to put pressure on those who would bow to Trump and kiss the ring rather than stand up as our forefathers did before us, against even greater odds. Ultimately, its not what happens to us as much as it is how we react and what we do next. Where do you stand?

THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN EDUCATION:

A CALL TO ACTION

Education is the cornerstone of success, and this fundamental right must be upheld without compromise.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to dismantle the Department of Education, a bold and contentious move that has sparked nationwide debate. His decision addresses frustrations over perceived federal overreach and alleged “woke” indoctrination in schools. Against declining academic performance, Trump envisions a comprehensive restructuring to rectify mismanagement of taxpayer funds and undue influence on the nation’s youth.

Dear Editor(s),

I am a home owner and resident in District 4 and I want to thank you for covering this story. I hope you continue to investigate and update your readers. The city needs to come

During a September rally in Wisconsin, Trump reaffirmed his commitment, stating, “We will ultimately abolish the federal Department of Education.” His pledge resonates with voters eager for educational reform and accountability.

The department primarily focuses on funding programs such as Title I, which aids low-income districts, and special education initiatives rather than direct instructional oversight. Critics question its overall efficacy, proposing to reallocate responsibilities to other agencies. Suggestions include shifting the student loan program to the Treasury Department, delegating Title IX enforcement to the Justice Department, and converting Title I funding into state block grants with reduced federal oversight.

clean and let the public know how and when this happened, and what city officials were involved! We also need all “illegal” projects halted! This firmly cements my opinion that our city is being sold down the drain by corrupt officials, all the way to the top, who have most likely had their pockets lined by developers. The worst part about that is that it’s been sold to us under the guise of creating affordable housing and solving our homeless epidemic.

Thank you again, Jessica Wight-Carter

I know it’s been a long time since I studied law, but all of my life I heard the phrase, “No one is above the law.”

During the Civil Rights Movement, such as the time when The Atty. Thurgood Marshall, Medgar Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Atty. Fred Gray, Rosa Parks, Mayor Charles Evers, Dick Gregory, Ella Baker, Malcolm X, Bayard Rustin, Diane Nash, Fannie Lou Hamer, A. Philip Randolph and others were with us, when something about race didn’t seem to be fair, our leaders would say, “We’ll take it to the Supreme Court!”

We haven’t heard that statement in recent times as we’re looking for justice. I know we can rely on Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson (the three justice warrior women on the U.S. Supreme Court.) but they’re not in the majority. They can argue for justice and we’re grateful they’re there. President Barack Obama tried to even the playing field a bit by putting someone on the Supreme Court. Senator Mitch McConnell put an end to that when President Obama had the right to make Atty. General Merrick Garland a candidate.

Republicans, led by Mitch McConnell, immediately announced they would not consider or vote on any replacement nominees from President Obama. They deferred the appointment to the next President who it just happened was Donald Trump. Even though doing so was not the law or the practice at the time, what McConnell did was set up a situation that a Democrat may not have the opportunity to select a Supreme Court Justice in our lifetime—giving a convicted criminal by the name of Trump the right to make decisions on who will be able to become a Supreme Court Justice for years to come!

Now Trump will have the power of kings! He can do whatever he wishes to do and will have no guardrails because something strange happened in the 2024 Presidential Election. The best candidate did not get credit for the victory. I say “did not get credit” because in my book, Vice-President Kamala Harris won the hearts and minds of so many voters and would have been able to straighten out more of the mess Trump made the last time he was President, and in the next four years the horrors he’s already putting in place for so many of us. If you don’t know what I mean, and you haven’t read his promises, please read PROJECT 2025, and take a look at who Trump and Musk have chosen to lead Trump’s plans for those of us who are not among their wealthy buddies who preferred to be led by a criminal than to vote for a brilliant and highly qualified Black /Asian woman who ran circles around Trump!

Those who didn’t vote, or didn’t vote for the woman who was by far the best candidate to save our democracy, I pray they won’t come crying and trying to join those who will remain working for the good of the country on the picket lines or in court as our rights are being taken away and as we are trying to get back what we’ve lost.

Our ancestors taught us to never give up the fight. When you see those MAGA caps, ask yourself, “Was America ever great for Black people, and did they expect that any of their children or children’s children would betray their efforts by supporting an uncaring criminal who cares about nothing other than himself?” Trump told us November 5th might be the last time we would ever have to vote! Those of us who believed him, will still be working for everybody to exercise that right. You might want to begin supporting those working to pass the “No Kings Act”!

Trump’s initiative reflects a broader conservative critique of federal education policy, advocating for increased local autonomy and reduced federal intervention. As education reform discussions intensify, the consequences of eliminating the Department of Education will shape future policy debates and electoral outcomes.

LL Cool J Reflects on His Legacy

LL Cool J, a hip-hop pioneer whose career spans nearly four decades, recently reflected on his profound impact on music, fashion, and entertainment. Speaking on Apple Music’s “Le Code,” the artist expressed confidence that history will recognize his contributions as foundational to the culture.

“I think that one day people are going to wake up and realize LL Cool J is the most important rapper that ever existed,” he said, referring to himself by the stage name that stands for “Ladies Love Cool James.”

Born James Todd Smith on January 14, 1968, in Bay Shore, New York, LL grew up in Queens and adopted his moniker as a teenager. In 1984, he became one of the first artists signed to Def Jam Records, a fledgling label co-founded by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. His debut single, “I Need a Beat,” sold over 100,000 copies, signaling the start of a career defined by groundbreaking achievements. His debut album, “Radio,” released in 1985, went platinum and featured hits like “I Can’t Live Without My Radio” and “Rock the Bells,” cementing LL’s place in hip-hop’s early canon.

BILL PICKETT IS BORN

Bill Pickett, known as "the Dusky Demon," was a Texas-born cowboy of Indian and Black descent. Born on December 5th, 1870, he became the most famous Black cowboy entertainer in American history. Pickett appeared in silent films and staged productions across the U.S. and England. He invented steer wrestling, or bulldogging, and set a standard for skill and showmanship that continues to influence rodeo today.

Pickett was the first Black man inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame and became the face of a U.S. postage stamp. His legacy reshaped the image of Black men in the American West.

CHARITY EARLEY IS BORN

LL Cool J recently detailed how he introduced key elements to hip-hop culture. “They’re going to look and say, ‘Wow, this is the guy that introduced all the ice, the jewelry, and the champagne,’” he said. He also credited himself with pioneering hip-hop ballads, pointing to his 1987 hit “I Need Love” and popularizing the now-ubiquitous term G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time). “When it comes to Def Jam, they’re going to say, ‘Wow, this is the first artist that was on the label.’” His influence extended to fashion, where LL helped launch iconic trends shaping hip-hop aesthetics. On the back cover of “Radio,” he sported black-and-red Air Jordan 1s, mak -

ing him one of the first rappers to wear the now-iconic sneakers. “Michael Jordan was a rookie when I did that,” LL said. “Everyone was wearing Adidas and Puma. I put the Jordans on.” In the 1990s, he also played a pivotal role in popularizing FUBU (For Us, By Us), a clothing line that became a cultural phenomenon. “When they talk about FUBU, they’ll say, ‘Yo, this guy introduced the idea of putting clothing lines into the culture,’” LL said. He also brought Kangol hats into hip-hop fashion, further solidifying his influence.

While LL Cool J revolutionized music and style, he also excelled in acting. His film roles include “Any Given Sunday,” “Halloween H2O,” and “In Too Deep.” Since 2009, he has starred on CBS’s NCIS: Los Angeles, one of television’s most enduring dramas. Balancing his acting career with music, he released chart-topping albums such as “Mama Said Knock You Out” (1990), which earned him his first Grammy Award, and “Mr. Smith” (1995), featuring hits like “Hey Lover” and “Doin’ It.”

Lieutenant Colonel Charity Edna Adams Earley was the first African American woman officer in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and commanded the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion during World War II. Born on December 5, 1918, in Kittrell, North Carolina, Adams excelled academically, graduating as valedictorian from Booker T. Washington High School and later earning a degree from Wilberforce University. She taught math and science before joining the WAAC in 1942, becoming the highest-ranking Black female officer in the Army.

In 1944, Adams led the 6888th Battalion, the first all-Black female unit deployed overseas, stationed in England. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, Adams retired after the war, later earning a master's degree and working in education and government. She passed away on January 13, 2002.

His recent album, “The Frequencies of Real Creative Energy” (The FORCE), was inspired by a dream involving A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg. “He came to me in a dream, and I decided to pivot and collaborate with Q-Tip,” LL explained, emphasizing the spiritual connection that shaped the project.

Despite his accomplishments, LL Cool J stopped short of declaring himself the greatest rapper ever. “There are too many rappers who have done too many important things for me to claim that I’m the one,” he said. “There’s a kid out there who feels Tupac changed their life or that Biggie’s music

The education system faces extraordinary disruptions exacerbated by the pandemic. Despite additional COVID funding, many students experienced alarming setbacks in core subjects, raising concerns about long-term implications.

Recent data highlights troubling trends among nine-year-olds:

A DAY OF SALVATION AND

On Thanksgiving Day at 16th and Island Street in Downtown, San Diego, Pastor Steve Smith and friends held their annual free Thanksgiving Day dinner.

The generous Thanksgiving Day feast came with plenty of singing, praising, scripture readings, group prayer, and inspiring testimonials from an array of speakers.

Some of those powerful testimonies provoked tears from both the speakers and attendees. After some group prayers, hugs, recognition of the higher power, and a special scripture reading by Evangelist Orned Gabriel, it was time for the big feast.

“We’ve been doing this every Thanksgiving for 19 years now, Glory be to God! We also celebrate Christmas here,” shared Pastor Smith. “We want to spread God’s word and love and help the less fortunate,” he continued.

Thanks to the generous donations from Jerrett Pryor, Ron Nibbles, Barry Barker, Armondo Laguna, James Norris, Al Hernandez, Manny Dinn, and Mr. “Sweet” Pete, people were able to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal.

Grant funding announced on November 27 will support two more years of collaboration between San Diego State University (SDSU), UC San Diego, and the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) to address AI equity gaps across regional campuses.

The Equitable AI Alliance, launched earlier this year, aims to provide equal access to AI tools and training, fostering skill-building in AI. It received a $1.5 million AI Grand Challenge grant from the California Education Learning Lab to support responsible AI use and bridge equity gaps in higher education.

The alliance focuses on three pillars: assessing AI-related needs, educating campus communities on AI resources, and scaling accessible AI tools for learning and career readiness. SDSU's inaugural AI student survey, launched in fall 2023, has surveyed nearly 18,000 students. The alliance will expand the survey to UC San

San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) has secured a nearly $1.5 million state grant for the second year of a three-year collaborative effort aimed at building fluency among

Diego and SDCCD campuses to better understand student and staff needs.

Survey data will guide the expansion of AI literacy programs and resources for all three institutions. A key component is SDSU’s Academic Applications of AI (AAAI) micro-credential, designed to empower students, faculty, and staff to leverage AI tools effectively. “By creating a common platform for AI education, we are enhancing career readiness and supporting smoother transitions for students transferring between institutions,” said David Goldberg, SDSU associate professor and project lead.

The alliance will also ensure equal access to AI tools like UC San Diego’s TritonGPT, a generative AI-powered information assistant. The initiative will establish a virtual innovation lab for educators across California’s higher education systems to share best practices and develop new AI pedagogies, aiming to create a statewide AI resource-sharing model.

“With careful planning, collaboration, and structured program delivery, we will help transform the landscape of healthcare education for English language learners in San Diego, as well as help satisfy the demand for CNAs, optical technicians, and ophthalmic assistants,” said SDCCE President Dr. Tina M. King.

Students are being recruited from ESL classes at SDCCE, San Diego Unified School District

high schools and the San Diego Adult School for SDCCE’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and new healthcare pathways for bilingual ophthalmic technicians and optical technicians.

The grants are funding student support, the hiring of experienced instructors, curriculum development and new training materials. In addition to vocational training, students will take part in workshops emphasizing vocational English skills in a healthcare context, with healthcare institutions providing hands-on experiences.

The initiative’s success will be measured by the

number of students completing the program, earning a credential and finding a job in their field of study, in addition to average salaries of students both before and after taking part. Goals include at least 85% of students in the CNA portion of the program passing a certification exam and a significant percentage of English language learners securing gainful employment within six months of completing their program.

This is the third time in a little more than a year that SDCCE has received a grant of more than $1 million to significantly expand its award-winning workforce training programs.

Donate Your Unwrapped Toys and Clothing For District 4 Flood Victims

Through December 21st

For over two decades Never Leave One Behind has worked diligently to provide children with toys during the holiday season, and food and clothing year-round for less fortunate families and veterans. We urgently need your assistance to continue to provide vital

services to residents in San Diego. Your donation will help to give San Diegans hope.

We are asking those that can dig a little deeper, to assist with donations for the kids and families living in the communities of District 4 that are still suffering from the horrible flood disaster earlier this year. Beginning November 25th through

December 21st, new unwrapped toys and clothing can be dropped off Monday through Thursday from 9:00am - 3:00pm at the offices of The Voice & Viewpoint Newspaper located at 3619 College Avenue San Diego, CA 92115.

Financial contributions to assist us with purchasing gifts for this upcoming Holiday season or fin-

Even a short vacation from school can cause learning loss and leave kids feeling behind when they return to the classroom. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep minds active during the holiday break, some of which will reinforce the concepts they are learning in school. Here are a few of them: Vacation Reading: Whether you’re traveling for the holidays or sticking close to home, curling up with a book is a great way to spend some of the inevitable down time. At the start of the break, hit up the library so everyone in the family will have plenty to read on subjects of interest to them. You might also consider giving at least one title to each gift recipient on your list this year to emphasize the idea that books can be treasured objects.

Online Math Tools: Casio’s suite of engaging education resources can help ensure students keep up their skills during the holidays. Those with the fx-9750GIII graphing calculator or (other easy-to-use models with hundreds of functions) will find plenty to challenge them when they check out expansive resource library of activities, Python programs, and more, all of which are available for free online. From calculating slopes and

finding derivatives to evaluating inferences and pxredictions based on data, the resource includes exercises for every area of mathematical focus, including calculus, geometry, and statistics.

Historical Day Trip: Take a day trip to a historic site to bring the past to life. Whether you visit a battlefield, the home of a notable figure, or a historically preserved city center, your trip will provoke discussion and keep minds engaged. If taking a scheduled tour is not possible due to limited holiday hours, do a bit of research on the site beforehand to give your family more context about what they will be seeing. This will make the trip more enjoyable and engaging.

Exercise: Staying active is not just good for physical health, it’s also good for the mind and soul. With no P.E. class on the schedule however, kids may be missing out on their daily dose of exercise. Be sure to go on a walk or bike ride each day or get out in the yard for some touch football or frisbee. If the weather is frightful, visit a yoga studio or even stay home and do an exercise class on YouTube.

At-home over-the-counter (OTC) COVID19 diagnostic tests can show if you have an active COVID-19 infection.

These at-home OTC COVID-19 diagnostic tests are FDA authorized for self-testing at home (or in other locations) without a prescription. Tests are available online or at local stores and you collect your own sample, perform the test, and read the result yourself without the need to send a sample to a laboratory.

With most at-home OTC COVID-19 diagnostic tests, you should repeat testing following a negative result, whether you have symptoms or not, to reduce your risk of a false negative test result. The FDA encourages you to voluntarily and anonymously report your positive or negative test results every time you use an at-home COVID-19 test. You can send your test result to MakeMyTestCount.org or use an app or other digital option for self-reporting that may be included with your test.

Up to 40% of the total U.S. food supply goes to waste every year, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The USDA estimates that the average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food they end up never eating.

And food waste can even make climate change worse. That’s because when you toss organic matter–like food waste–into landfills to decompose, it creates methane, a greenhouse gas pollutant. In 2022 the EPA said methane traps about 80 times the heat that carbon dioxide does and it is responsible for roughly one-third of the warming from greenhouse gases.

Here are some simple tips that can help stop food waste, save you some money, and even fight climate change!

Reduce Wasted Food — Shop and Plan Wisely

One of the best ways to do that is to plan ahead, shop smart and serve just enough food to make everyone happy.

You can calculate how much food you need to prepare, based on how many people you’re serving and how much they typically eat. Freeze or Find Ways to Reuse Leftovers

If you’re having guests, provide to-go containers, or invite your guests to bring their own, so they can take leftovers home with them. Rethink your leftovers and use them as ingredients for new meals. Leftover meat and vegetables can make a great soup or casserole. Or turn mashed potatoes into potato pancakes.

Compost What’s Left!

If you don’t have your own compost pile or bin, you can place any remaining food scraps and organic waste into your curbside green bin! (Note: If you do have your own compost bin at home, you probably want to avoid composting meats and bones; they can attract unwanted pests.)

To learn more about reducing wasting food, visit the County’s Solid Waste Planning and Recycling website.

test is right for you. For additional information about each Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), visit fda.gov in the In Vitro Diagnostics EUAs: Tables of IVD EUAs section.

The "Expiration Date" column lists where to find the expiration date for that test, and the "Other Details" column lists the shelf-life for the test. The shelf-life is how long the test should work as expected and is measured from the date the test was manufactured. The expiration date is set at the end of the shelflife and is the date through which the test is expected to perform as accurately as when manufactured. In some cases, the expiration date for a test may be extended.

Visit fda.gov to search by manufacturer, test name, or other details shown in the table to find more information on the test, including if the expiration date has been extended.

Veterans Face Challenges Starting Small Businesses

Many veterans who’ve started small businesses tell a similar story: Their military service prepared them mentally for the task, but they were at a disadvantage when it came to the financial part.

“Vetrepreneurs” – veterans that start small businesses or startups -- own nearly 2 million small businesses that employ 5.5 million people in the U.S., according to the Small Business Administration. They take in about $1.3 trillion in revenue annually. Their numbers have shrunk, however, as the veteran population has aged. In a 2023 report, the SBA found veteran ownership declined from 11% of businesses in 2014 to 8.1% in 2020.

Veterans enter the business world prepared with skills they gain in the field like leadership and problem-solving. But they haven’t had a chance to build up credit or savings that civilians have had more time to do. That can cause problems because banks use that infor-

mation to approve loans. Not to mention the mental toll it takes to transition from the military life to civilian life.

According to data from business coaching nonprofit SCORE, about a third of veteran businesses have limited access to capital or lack of financing. That compares to a quarter of non-veteran-owned firms.

SCORE CEO Bridget Weston says the good news is that veterans have plenty of places to turn to for help. Those include nonprofit organizations aimed at getting them on their feet and building up financial literacy, veteran-only loans and grants, and contracts earmarked for veteran owned and disabled veteran owned small businesses.

The place that many start is the Small Business Administration, which offers a program to get certified as a veteran-owned or disabled veteran-owned small business, which can make it easier to get certain loans and federal contracts.

Veteran focused nonprofits can be another key place to look for help.

Plan for a Secure Financial Future

A bumpy economy and rising cost of living have Americans rethinking their finances.

In fact, about 36% of households feel anxious about their current financial situation, according to the Financial IQ Study by World Financial Group.

households believe the day-to-day cost of living is a key short-term financial priority. While meeting your immediate needs is essential, so is planning for the future. Determining what money is coming in and what you owe each month tells you how much is left for discretionary spending and saving.

Although short-term pressures and demands can make it difficult, developing a financial strategy based on both literacy and resilience is key to establishing a solid financial future. To many, financial literacy and financial resilience mean the same thing. In fact, financial literacy refers to knowledge, while resilience means you are more likely to be prepared for unexpected financial events.

Wondering where to start? Here are some tips to help build a more financially sound future.

Review Your Current Financial Situation

Having a firm grasp on your current income and expenses can provide insight into adjusting your finances to reach your goals. Most

Start Saving Now

It’s never too early to start saving. Even a modest amount set aside every month will grow into a more meaningful account balance over time. A common rule of thumb is 20% of your overall income. You can stretch your income further by taking advantage of options like employer retirement savings programs that deduct funds before taxes, especially if the employer matches your contributions.

Consult a Financial Professional

You don’t have to be a financial whiz to create a smart plan for your future. Financial professionals can help design a strategy tailored to your specific needs. They specialize in helping individuals and families find financial confidence

Legacy Dream

through life insurance, retirement and wealth-building strategies. You can take a financial literacy quiz to assess your financial resilience and measure your readiness to withstand economic challenges.

Prepare for Unexpected Expenses

Unexpected events can have catastrophic impacts on household finances. For example, leaving the workforce early due to illness could mean years of lost earning power, which could impact your shortand long-term priorities. Other examples, like unplanned home repairs or medical expenses, can also make a major dent in your financial plan. Creating an emergency fund, separate from a savings account, can help offset the impact of unexpected expenses.

Safeguard Your Family

Losing a family member can bring much more than heartbreak, especially if that person’s income factors heavily into the household budget. However, different types of life insurance are designed to help safeguard your finances and can accommodate different budgets and lifestyles.

Term life insurance offers individual life insurance protection for a specified number of years. It’s usually less expensive than permanent insurance with the same face value. Permanent life insurance, including whole-life coverage, remains in effect until the policyholder’s death as long as premiums are paid. Most permanent life insurance policies also offer some type of savings component that builds cash value over the life of the policy.
