This rhino calf needs a name!

CT

E AU LIV

Don’t miss the swingin’ live auction during the VIP party tonight. You’ll meet Tanaya the greater one-horned rhino, and her sweet, adventurous new daughter—then bid for the opportunity to name the little calf. When you give tonight, you’re helping meet the most critical needs of rhinos and other wildlife at the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and around the world. Born recently at the Safari Park, Tanaya’s new calf is spending every minute exploring the Asian Savanna with her mom. She boldly follows Tanaya to their favorite mud wallow, across the rolling green hills, and meets the blackbuck antelope and other animals that share their wild world. But in their native habitats, greater one-horned rhinos can’t roam so freely. Populations have dangerously declined because of habitat loss, poaching, and illegal trafficking in rhino horn, and now all rhino species are in trouble. For decades, friends like you have helped us to work to protect these gentle giants in their native habitats and establish sustainable populations. Every birth is cause for celebration—as is your support this evening!

Every dollar counts, and you can raise a glass to celebrate that you’re helping Tanaya, her calf, and countless endangered species around the world. So come join in on the VIP fun, meet the little gal, and bid for your chance to name her. See you there!

BID NOW! Name must be submitted by October 1, 2020. Some name restrictions apply.

YOUR SUPPORT IS VITAL TO OUR FUTURE.

Thank you for being a special part of our family and for joining us this evening to celebrate Earth’s most extraordinary wildlife. Your generous gifts offer hope and reassurance not only for the countless animals and plants at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park but also for endangered species around the globe. The urgent nature of our work—even in the face of this pandemic—remains unchanged. Wildlife will keep disappearing at accelerated rates if we do not remain steadfast in fulfilling our mission to save species from extinction. And after months without visitors to offset our ongoing costs, your help tonight is critical so that we can continue to save wildlife worldwide. Your gifts will go directly to our most urgent needs.

We cannot thank you enough.

VOTE Elephants

Saving Orphaned Elephants Poaching and habitat loss are taking their toll on elephant families across Africa. And when an orphan loses its mother and family, the future often seems hopeless for the helpless calf. Luckily, with your support, we’re rebuilding families and giving these orphans a second chance. In northern Kenya, we partner with Reteti Elephant Sanctuary to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintroduce orphaned and injured calves back into protected areas of their native habitat. Leveraging over a century of experience, San Diego Zoo Global nutritionists, veterinarians, and wildlife care specialists team up

with locals in the field and collaborate on every part of the recovery process. When the calves come into the orphanage, they are often sick, traumatized, and dehydrated. Dedicated staff work around the clock to nurse them back to health, administering medicines and feeding them big bottles of specialized milk formula every three hours. Seeing these calves that were once gravely ill become robust, thriving, and ready to return to their native range is an incredible moment that reminds us that with you by our side, there’s hope for these magnificent and iconic giants.

CAST A VOTE FOR ELEPHANTS

And remember, when you vote for your favorite conservation program tonight, they all win! Check out the other efforts being made to save rhinos, giraffes, and koalas.

Cole Clary can't wait to go to the Zoo! We’re hopping, leaping, and chirping with excitement to come back, too!

From the Whalen family

VOTE Koalas

Devastating Fires, Heroic Rescues Australia is home to incredible wildlife found nowhere else on Earth—perhaps none so wellknown and loved as koalas. Earlier this year when mega-wildfires devastated Australia, supporters like you leaped into action for koalas, raising funds to send San Diego Zoo Global wildlife care specialists Down Under. Your support deployed tracker dogs to find and rescue injured wildlife, provided food and water stations for homeless wildlife, and relocated koalas out of harm’s way

before the fires could reach them. Friends like you saved these desperate survivors and made it possible for them to heal, and many of the rescued koalas have already been reintroduced back into their native habitats. As they adapt to the changed landscape we continue to monitor their safety as we also work to protect and preserve their ecosystems. It’s incredible to see what can happen when a community—from around the world—comes together!

Delivering Energy with Purpose At Sempra Energy, our companies work together every day to improve the lives of our customers and serve our communities. We believe in working with local charitable organizations to help our communities grow and thrive. That’s why we’re proud to support the San Diego Zoo Global gala Rendezvous In The Zoo (R•I•T•Z).

VOTE Giraffes

Standing Tall for Disappearing Towers of the Savanna Giraffes are towering icons, easily recognizable whether they’re spotted in the pages of a children’s book or gracefully galloping across the savanna. But despite being loved the world over, few people are aware of the giraffe’s predicament. Threatened by poaching and habitat loss, these gentle giants are quietly undergoing what experts call a “silent extinction.” Some populations have plummeted 80% and time is not on their side. In a race against the clock, we’re joining together to save these iconic animals by creating sustainable field conservation

programs, including anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, and collaborating with partners and local communities to develop methods so that giraffes and people can peacefully coexist. We’ve also developed a citizen science site called Wildwatch Kenya, where volunteers from around the world come together for giraffes by identifying trail camera images on behalf of conservationists and expediting our efforts to save them. Your support helps our team of experts devise conservation plans by shining a light on giraffe populations, where they live, and what they need to thrive. You’re giving our long-necked friends the gift of time, and protecting these watchtowers of the savanna for generations to come.

CAST GIRAFFES CASTAAVOTE VOTE FOR FOR GIRAFFES

And remember, when you vote for your favorite conservation program tonight, they all win! Check out the other efforts being made to save rhinos, elephants, and koalas.

VOTE Rhinos

Groundbreaking Science to Save the World’s Most Endangered Species Weighing up to 5,000 pounds and reaching 6 feet in height, rhinos are gentle giants. To meet a rhino is to fall in love! Sadly, all rhinos are in trouble, and the northern white rhino has suffered worst of all. With just two left on Earth, a mother-daughter pair, the species is all but extinct. And yet, with you by our side, there is hope. The Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center is home to our groundbreaking effort to save the northern white

rhino. With a one-of-a-kind surrogacy program and help from our Frozen Zoo® we’re developing the cutting-edge science necessary to save these gentle giants from extinction. And it’s working. Last year, we welcomed southern white rhino calves Edward and Future at the Rhino Rescue Center— they’re the first white rhinos born through artificial insemination in all of North America! Their births prove that the science is working and hope for the northern white rhino is at our fingertips. With your support, a herd of northern white rhinos will once again roam protected across Africa’s savannas.

CAST A VOTE FOR RHINOS

And remember, when you vote for your favorite conservation program tonight, they all win! Check out the other efforts being made to save giraffes, elephants, and koalas.

Things may seem a little upside down, but it’s all about perspective! Hanging out with Tornero makes my day and you give us hope for a brighter tomorrow. Thank you for all you do and your continued support for the wildlife counting on us here and around the world. Cheers to you, to R•I•T•Z, and to San Diego Zoo Global!

Working Together to Save Kenya’s Wildlife The Kenyan savanna is home to iconic African species like elephants, giraffes, zebras, vultures, antelope, leopards, and rhinos. It’s also home to local people and their livestock. San Diego Zoo Global works with communities in Kenya to rescue injured and orphaned animals, conduct anti-poaching patrols, preserve livelihoods, educate future generations, and prevent transmission of disease between livestock and wildlife. Conservation efforts are most effective when they are comprehensive, focusing on the needs of local people as well as wildlife. To support critical work like this, please give generously tonight. The future of Kenyan wildlife depends on it. Your gift of $100 or more to Kenyan conservation will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $100,000, doubling your impact for Africa’s iconic wildlife.
