Seaford Photographic Society
November’s programme started with an informal fun competition judged by members, on the subject of ‘Autumn Colours’, and Janice Hewitt’s wild mushroom image ‘Fly Agaric’ proved most popular. Well done also to new member Jenny Morkel who took second place. Simon Watkins’ squirrel photo was the third most popular.
The fourth round of the PDI league competition for Projected Digital Images had nearly 50 entries. Many thanks to Pat Couder CPAGB BPE1 QPSA who stepped in at the last minute when the judge we had booked couldn’t make it due to illness. In the standard group only two images were awarded the maximum score of 20/20 and these came from Stephen Day and Peter Cavanagh. Simon Watkins scored a 20 in the advanced group, with another of his superb nature images, as did Jennie Edwards with her atmospheric misty morning river scene.

The PDI league competition has 5 rounds and members can enter two photos into each round. The overall winner is decided by counting everybody’s five highest scoring images. At this stage the scores were very close in both groups, so there was all to play for going into the final round. Liz Fitzsimons and Michael Chapman both scored 20s in the standard group, but it is often those scoring 18 or 19 in the final round that can decide the overall winner. When the dust had settled, Michael Chapman, David Nickalls and Colin Hammond all tied for first place with scores of 95! In such cases the next highest scoring images are also taken into account and the atmosphere was very tense while everybody waited for Simon to do the calculations. Congratulations to David Nickalls who took the top spot by one point when the 6th-highest scores had been taken into account…but Peter and Colin were still joint second. With the 7th-highest- scoring images counted, this was still the case! In the end, after taking into account the 8th-highest-scoring images, Peter took second place. In the advanced group there was again a tie for first place, between Simon Rigby and Simon Watkins, both with 99 points. With the 6th- and 7th-highest scores taken into account, Simon Watkins took the overall win by 1 point. Well done to David and Simon, and what an exciting end to the league competition!

We had another excellent Zoom talk to end the month, by Mike Martin EFIAP AWPF and entitled ‘It’s Not What You See, It’s What You Make’. Photography is about so much more than just capturing what you see through the viewfinder and this inspiring lecture showed how to combine parts of different photos into montages. Mike showed us many examples and even went through a live Photoshop edit to produce an artistic and creative image that was so much more than the original.
You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including all the latest news, programme of events, successful images, competition results, and more. It is updated every week.
