Santa Returns to Seaford Streets
Father Christmas and his elves returned to the streets of Seaford during seventeen evenings from 1st to 23rd December. On Saturday mornings in December and on Christmas Eve Father Christmas and his elves could be found in Broad Street. It was a joy to see the expressions of happiness and wonder on the children’s faces as they talked to and received their sweets from Santa.

John Preddy 50 years Seaford Rotary membership and Service
A convivial evening was facilitated by John Preddy’s generosity in having an open bar at the celebration of his 50 years’ membership and service to Seaford Rotary. Fifty-two Rotarians, their partners and friends were delighted to participate in the celebration at a dinner at Seaford Golf Club on 12th November, exactly 50 years to the day that John Preddy joined Seaford Rotary. Rotarian, Past President, Past District Governor and Paul Harris Fellow John Preddy was presented with a certificate issued by Rotary International Great Britain and Ireland in recognition of his 50 years’ membership and a letter from Rotary International. His wife Mary Speeches were made by President of Seaford Rotary, Mike Ogilvie and by the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Rodney Reed to which John responded. The Mayor, Councillor Rodney Reed on behalf of Seaford Town Council and the town of Seaford thanked John for his Civic Service since coming to Seaford in 1961. His speech recognised John’s contribution to our Town and his service from 1969 to 1981 as a District and County Councillor. The Mayor, as a Past Rotarian, also indicated that it was most unusual and certainly commendable for a Rotarian to complete 50 years of membership of one Rotary Club. He commended John for the example he set during this time of ‘Service above Self’ while running a pharmaceutical business with an extensive reach.
Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party
Thiry-two senior citizens were treated to the Rotary Christmas party held at St Luke’s Church Hall, Walmer Road. There was a change of location and method for deciding who should be invited, with Mary Hawes from Seafriends arranging the invitations for the party goers, but the same happiness and enjoyment was had by all after a year away due to the COVID pandemic.

The guests were treated to a glass of sherry on arrival and when all were seated, Past President Peter Fenwick dressed in full tails as master of ceremonies gave a rendition of ‘Willkommen’ from Cabaret before handing over to President Mike Ogilvie and the Mayor of Seaford, Rodney Reed to welcome the guests. Entertainment was provided by Graham Tubb and Margo Miller accompanied on the piano by Rosemary Kemp. Sandwiches and a selection of home-made cakes and scones, all washed down with tea, coffee or orange juice, were served by Rotarians, and Mary Hawes (dressed as an Elf) and Min Stone from Seafriends.

The afternoon festivities continued after the tea with Margot Miller, Graham Tubb and Rosemary Kemp entertaining everyone with a variety of songs drawn from old-time musicals, including a requested ‘Roll out the Barrel’. The songs were well known, and many of the guests joined in. Each senior citizen was provided with a strip of raffle tickets when they arrived. The Mayor of Seaford, Rodney Reed drew the raffle and President Mike Ogilvie distributed the prizes to the lucky winners. Prizes ranged from tins of sweets and biscuits to Christmas puddings and Christmas cakes. At the end, the happy party goers were conveyed back home.

Our grateful thanks go to all the helpers, including nonRotarians, who all worked hard to make the event such a success.
