Welcome...

to the July issue of Seaford Scene., your community magazine, business directory and What’s On guide. At the time of writing, it’s a glorious summer’s day, the sun is shining, the sky is a cloudless blue and it’s 24ºC outside. Summer has finally arrived! Unfortunately, the proposed lifting of COVID restrictions on 21st June has been postponed, so we can’t throw our masks away and jump around for joy just yet. Still, since the last easing of restrictions, many of us have been able to meet up with family and friends and social events have been organised, as you will discover when you read through this issue. The What’s On in Seaford listings are increasing, and some clubs and organizations are back up and running – it does feel like we’re returning to something more familiar. In this issue we welcome the return of Seaford Splash! (page 8) with a round-up of all your local arts and cultural events. The Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail continues (page 44), as does the Open Gardens in the National Garden Scheme (What’s On pages 127 to 130). It’s the Denton Community Challenge on the 17th (page 117) and the Newhaven Festival starts on 10th July (page 83), and if you fancy a spot of Seaside Bingo, turn to Seaford Natural History Society on page 42. Why not visit the Crypt Gallery with three different exhibitions running this month? (page 60). Stay safe in the sun and enjoy your July! Fran Tegg. Editor

Seaford Mayor and Deputy Mayor At the Seaford Town Council Annual General Meeting, Cllr. Rodney Reed and Cllr. Jean Cash were unanimously re-elected to the positions of Mayor and Deputy respectively. They both were nominated unopposed. The Declaration of acceptance was signed and the Serjeant at Mace, Peter White formally made the announcement at the meeting which was held at the Baptist Church auditorium and live streamed onto the Town Council’s YouTube Channel. The recording of the meeting can be viewed at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=PIEKslmx4kE. This was the first hybrid face-to-face Council meeting since Lockdown in March 2020. Meetings since then had been held virtually via Zoom, but recent government instruction was that physical meetings had to resume. Due to the limited space in the Council Chamber, other venues were sought to enable safe social distancing, and the Baptist Church was able to offer greater space for this. This venue also allowed limited spaces for public attendance that would have otherwise not be possible, and had the equipment to live stream. Participants and members of the public could also access the meeting via Zoom and it was also live streamed to Seaford Town Council’s YouTube Channel in order to reach a wider audience. Cllr Rodney Reed is quoted as saying: ‘I was honoured to be nominated to be Mayor of Seaford for the second time and humbled to be appointed unopposed by my Councillor colleagues. In the year just passed I realised I was Seaford’s first virtual Mayor and so I now have a lot more experience of Zoom’and MS Teams!

I was pleased that our Annual Council meeting could be face-to-face this year, made possible by Seaford Baptist Church offering their large and airy venue so making socially distanced Council Meetings possible. As Seaford emerges from Lockdown, I hope with Mrs Ann Reed, the Mayoress, to be able to support many community events this year in person. ‘New Councillors have recently been elected to join the Town Council and Adam Chugg our Town Clerk is well settled into his role leading his teams of capable Officers. Staycation Seaford looks to be host to a lively summer and I am confident that our shops and businesses will benefit from this boost to their trade. Our Councillors and Officers are stronger together, working as one team for the good of our town. ‘I am delighted that Cllr Jean Cash was appointed again as Deputy Mayor, also unopposed. We worked well together virtually last year. I am sure that we will continue effectively working together supporting our town emerging from Lockdown and being a vibrant Seaford as a community.” Cllr Reed will be setting out his plans for this municipal year in the coming weeks, and updates will be available on the Seaford Mayor’s Facebook page: Mayor of Seaford/Facebook and the Town Council website. https://www.seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk/ Photo: l-r Cllr Jean Cash Deputy Mayor and Cllr Rodney Reed Mayor 2021-2022.

Local School’s Nature Grant Annecy Catholic Primary School is delighted to announce that we have been awarded a Local School Nature Grant, thanks to players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. Our pupils will be benefitting from two catapults, a Get Growing Kit, two gardening kits and books on how to support learning outside the classroom, which will be used to develop our wonderful outdoor provision from Reception through to Year 6. In addition, staff will receive training on ‘How to bring gardening into your school curriculum’. Pupils played an important role in applying for the grant and selected equipment that they felt would benefit their peers. Valentina and Grace, both aged 8, said: ‘We feel really excited because this will be useful”. Valentina added: ‘We can use the catapult to measure how far things go…’ , while Grace concluded: ‘…and the gardening items will help the bugs because they can nibble on the plants!’ Mr Gallagher, Headteacher, said: ‘I am so proud of our school family. The children are so passionate about making a positive change to their environment and take an active role in promoting climate action. This grant will enable us to move things on further. ‘The project is run by Learning through Landscapes and funded by People’s Postcode Lottery, Postcode Neighbourhood Trust, Postcode Places Trust, Postcode Society Trust, Postcode Local Trust or Postcode Community Trust, all of whom receive funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. ‘We would also like to thank Dinah and Margery from On The Verge (https://www.seafuture.org/on-the-verge/) for their guidance and support in developing our outside space and helping clarify ideas for our application.’ Photo l-r: Pupils gardening at Annecy Primary School.

Arts and cultural events in the Seaford area

Music

Picture the scene: in windy gardens and dressed in anoraks, volunteers have been cautiously getting together in their Covid-safe groups to weigh up the possibilities of staging events again. And as I write this in early June we are all hoping against hope that the plans we have made can finally go ahead subject to guidelines. So, arts and culture lovers, here’s a sample of what you can expect this summer. Please let me know what you are putting on, at least a week before Seaford Scene’s deadline, with an image if possible.

Art

There’s just time to catch Katy Oxborrow’s Silent Sentinels show at the Crypt Gallery until 3 July. From 16 to 25 July, mother and son Lindy Dunbar and Joseph Davey take over at the Crypt with a collaboration of their lively drawings and thought-provoking paintings. Then Rosemary Drysdale is at the Crypt from 29 July until 3 August with diverse work including mixed media. For details about an exhibition aptly titled Cliffhanger, at South Hill Barn from 7 to 15 August, turn to page 26.

Newhaven Festival

The fourth Newhaven Festival opens on 10 July with a performance of the ballet Tom’s Midnight Garden by Frankly Speaking Productions adapted from Philippa Pearce’s classic children’s novel. It can be seen at the bandstand on Denton Island at 12 noon, tickets from Event-brite. Gin, fizz, beer and wine can be sampled at the Bar at the Bandstand event there on 31 July, with sessions from 11.30am until 2pm, 2.30 until 5pm and 5.30 until 8pm, over 18s only, apart from babies in slings or pushchairs, and disability dogs only. The festival will also be embracing Artwave from 11-26 September and the Tidemills Project from 20-26 September, more details in future Seaford Scene issues.

Music

Seaford Music Society is hosting the London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble on 11 July. For details go to www.seafordmusicsociety.com

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

The Sounds of Tide Mills

Friday 24th September. The legendary folk singers, The Copper Family, will be giving a very special live performance, entitled Sussex Song on Saturday 25th September. They will also provide some soundscape elements to the Tide Mills Project.

The team behind the Tide Mills Project is thrilled to reveal the musical performances for the upcoming Heritage Celebratory Week, 20th – 26th September.

Finally, Mercury Music Prize Nominee Sam Lee will close the Heritage Celebratory Week with an exclusive concert, Singing with Waves. Sam is a highly inventive and original singer, folk song interpreter, a passionate conservationist, committed song collector and creator of live events. Alongside his organisation, Nest Collective, and fellow collaborators, Sam has shaken up the live music scene, breaking boundaries between folk and contemporary music.

Complementing and interacting with the visual arts elements of the project, these performances will really bring the site back to life, with an atmosphere of celebration. The Newhaven Festival has generously funded the Tide Mills Project’s newest community venture: The Tide Mills Community Choir. This choir will meet weekly at the Hillcrest Community Centre throughout September, learning new and old acapella songs, exploring the history of Tide Mills, focusing on the character and influence of the sea, as well as the legacy of local community spirit. The project is open to everyone, all ages and abilities, with no singing experience required, and will culminate in a performance at the Heritage Celebratory Week. Rehearsals will be led by Natural Voice choir director Ellen Muriel, using a simple call and response technique. Come and get involved: it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, embrace a musical challenge and take part in a unique cultural experience! The choir will be launched with an open taster session at The Newhaven Festival at the end of August – get in touch to register your interest via the Tide Mills Project website. There will be other fabulous performances too. Local singer-song writer Colin Chapman will perform specially composed songs about Tide Mills and the history of the site. Nigel Goss is creating soundscapes and music, which visitors will experience as they walk around the site. He will be working with the community to create music and soundscapes, building atmosphere and dramatic tension. The three-piece acoustic band, The Kites will be giving intimate performances on site on Thursday 23rd and

Seaford Youth Forum

USE IT OR LOSE IT CAMPAIGN

Well done Seaford shops and businesses! As of 1st June, 104 of you have signed up for the Youth Forum’s attempt to promote a ‘keep it local’ ethos in these difficult times, with only seven feeling unable to participate. We still have to make contact with another forty or so. If you have a connection to any of the primary schools you will know how it works, with every child having a card which can be used by any generation in the family. Each shop pays £10 for the year to June 2022 and the four schools then share the income, at least £250 per school. The school with the most tallies will receive a trophy. We are hoping to get young people thinking about what a community is, about their responsibilities, and about how they can have a voice. A number of Seafordians without any link to the schools have asked why we didn’t extend the scheme to all residents but, in truth, this would have been too large a venture both for our small group and for the shops. What we would ask is that all of us think about keeping it local and perhaps try to use a few shops which we’ve never used before. Who knew that there are 150 plus, including those on the periphery of town! If you have any questions or observations, or are a shop wishing to sign up, do feel free to email me, Roger Daw, at rogerashleydaw@gmail.com

Lindy Dunbar & Joseph Davey Exhibition Crypt Gallery, 23 Church St, Seaford, BN25 1HD Fri 16th July - Sun 25th July 2021 11am - 5pm. Closed Mon 19th July Mother and Son, Lindy Dunbar from Seaford and Joseph Davey from Östersund Sweden are exhibiting their drawings and paintings together in a collaborative exhibition depicting figures and landscape, incorporating mixed media works and oil paintings. Exhibiting together has always been a special experience for Dunbar and Davey. Their work, though stylistically different, evokes a feeling of familiarity when viewed together – a feeling that many have craved for in recent times, giving the exhibition a heightened poignancy.

Each medium has a particular excitement and the quality of marks and colour palette is of paramount importance. During Lockdown I have accepted the new challenges of drawing figures via Zoom. Dancers, acrobats and performers are often the basis of my work as they move before me, and it’s a pleasure to share in their creative process. There is never more than a brief moment of stillness, and I have to grasp what I see, capturing the serendipity of the fleeting tensions as they emerge and disappear. I strive to give the appearance that the figure has only just arrived and could get up and move away at any moment, even in a longer pose. Instagram: @lindydunbar Facebook: Lindy Dunbar www.lindydunbar.co.uk

Joseph Davey:

I am originally from Sussex, studied fine art painting at Brighton University (19992001) and remained in Brighton for a few years after that. I have been continuously painting since then supporting myself with various different jobs along the way. Ten years ago I moved to Östersund in Sweden with my family, which is where I now live, and work. My painting practice is a contemplation, reflection, expression and documentation of poignant instances within my life. I work from source material in the studio, almost always photographs that I have taken. This allows me to reflect on the chosen images and the reason for their collection. It also allows the paint itself to become more dominant in the work. Oil paint is an incredibly enriching vehicle. The vocabulary of marks available is broad, fascinating and constantly inspiring. My love of the medium is always apparent in my work; it is, I believe, what makes me a painter. Instagram: @josephbryandavey Facebook: /josephdaveyart

Dolphins in the Martello Tower?

In the early ’70s, the Martello Tower was a rather sad looking place. The imposing structure was surmounted by a rather odd flat perched on top rather like a pie crust. The role of the building was examined by East Sussex County Council during the period of local government reorganisation in 1974.

The Tower had been developed or despoiled, depending on your point of view, through the early part of the twentieth century by the addition of slipper baths and a roller skating rink in the moat – which was partially covered in 1936 to improve the Esplanade – a café, an amusement arcade and that flat on top, of course. In a report to the Amenities Committee, the Chief Planning Officer of the ESCC set out a number of possible options for the Martello Tower. It was suggested that the landward part of the moat could be roofed over and the entire space could be a craft centre, offering exhibition space for local artists, potters, iron workers and other craftspeople. Plus, part of the covered moat and the tower itself could be used as an astronomical observatory with a public area equipped with telescopes ‘to afford views of passing shipping’. Or perhaps, the Tower could become a restaurant and bar with a marine exhibition centre in the moat area. It was also suggested that it could become a museum dedicated to the Napoleonic Wars. But the most imaginative suggestion was that the Martello Tower should become a Dolphinarium. Quite how the aquatic mammals were to be accommodated or shown to the public is unclear, but the idea may

24

have involved converting part of the covered moat into banks of seating with the open moat being converted into water tanks for the dolphins. Who knows? Creative sketches were prepared, showing how a revised bridge and entrance arch might look, even more theatrical than the arch that existed at the time. There may have been further studies and suggestions for the use of the Martello Tower, but in the event – and probably because of its Ancient Monument status, none were carried out, and in 1977 Lewes District Council took the decision to ‘restore’ the Tower. The flat was removed in 1978, as was the arcade/café structure on the seaward side and the Tower was returned to something closer to its original appearance. In 1979, Seaford Heritage Society was allowed to lease the building for use as a Museum and a large amount of carefully planned restoration was undertaken. But being a Scheduled Ancient Monument, has meant that no alterations may be made to the tower at all. ‘We can’t even drill into the wall to hang a display’ commented Jane Keel, Chairman. ‘Our job is to preserve the Tower in its current state and as a home for our exhibition of local history and artefacts. All being well, we intend to reopen our Archives to enquirers on Sunday 1st of August from 1.30 to 4pm. Anyone with an enquiry about a specific building, street or event is welcome to come along.’ Photos from top: The flat being removed from the Tower roof; Part of the ‘creative’ suggestions for the Tower. by Elizabeth Gordon about her youth in Seaford and Rottingdean before moving to London and working for solicitors during the day and dancing in clubs, tavernas and restaurants as a belly dancer at night.

Last Minute Artists are coupling the iconic beauty that is the downland and sea around Cuckmere Haven and the Seven Sisters with Cliffhanger, an art show at South Hill Barn from Saturday 7th August until Sunday 15th August. Cliffhanger will open the barn’s huge doors to reveal an exciting and eclectic mix of paintings, ceramics, sculpture and stained glass by established artists, with free entry from 10am until 4.30pm each day.

This is only the second time that the barn has been used since its doors were opened nearly two years ago, courtesy of Seaford Town Council, for community art vehicle The Green Show.

Cliffhanger will show work that will bring this once derelict building to life. It will feature the varied work of artists based in Seaford such as painter and potter Sally-Mae Joseph, painter and sculptor Nigel Goss, 07/06/2021 painter 10:31Sarah Gregson whose local countryside views are so loved, mixed media artists and painters Geraldine Edmunds and Susan Casebourne, plus invited artists including ceramicist Adrienne Shields, painters Sandra Chessum and Lisa Bagot, box artist Andrew McDonnell and stained glass artist Adele Walshe. Making a special appearance will be some work by the mysterious Planksy – Seaford’s own Banksy – whose colourfully executed and sculpted birds and exotic animals are a favourite feature of the town and around.

Many years later a famous celebrity tracks her down saying he has such fond memories of her – a lovely surprise to end the book!

In the meantime though your committee is working hard to get social evenings back up and running again. Unfortunately, due to reasons beyond our control, our meeting place will have to change and possibly the evening too. We will publish full details as we know them on the website, Facebook and the Seaford Scene again. If in any doubt please contact any of the committee members before attending any potential meetings. and what better month for a garden party? Outdoor entertaining is currently very popular, you can kit your garden out with weatherproof comfy sofas, fire pits, outdoor lighting, even pizza ovens. I’m not aspiring to such grandeur, my old garden chair in the shade gives a lovely view of the borders, and I can sit there planning for next year. Remember that July heralds the secondhalf of the year; the summer solstice has passed, days will gradually get shorter, and those bulb catalogues will soon be arriving. The July borders are brimming with colour, but gardens evolve, and there’s always room for one more plant. e t

The month of July was named for the Roman General Julius Caesar; it was his birthday month, mine too,

Peonies

Peonies are wonderful plants, the hybrids especially producing flamboyant flowers in a wide range of colours. They bloom mid-spring to early summer, are low maintenance once planted, and in good conditions these herbaceous perennials will survive to adorn your borders for many years to come, sometimes outliving the planter! Plant mid-border in fertile soil in full sun and give plants enough space to develop, they don’t like too much competition or root disturbance. Peonies must be shallow planted with the crown no more than 5cm below ground level; they benefit from a spring mulch that should be kept clear of emerging shoots. In general peonies are tough, hardy plants, but late frosts could damage flower buds, so avoid frost pockets. The RHS have just completed a five-year trial of 180 Paeonia, species and cultivars, seeking plants worthy of an AGM (award of garden merit). An aim of the trial was to highlight newer and lesser known peonies e.g. rose-scented, bright pink, P. lactiflora ‘Bouquet Perfect’.This plant received an AGM and should become more widely available. See RHS website for stockists.

Yes! On Wednesday mornings the gates of Seaford Community Garden, at the Crouch, are now wide open and welcoming to all. The relaxation of Covid rules meant that at the end of May we were able to host a swarm of extra, very happy visitors who had bought tickets to the first of the annual National Gardens Scheme’s Seaford Trails. Allison said the Seaford Sunshine Strummers Ukulele Band, who made an impromptu appearance in the Crouch Gardens, made a huge difference to the atmosphere, so much so that some people stayed for the whole afternoon. ‘We were very thankful to the weather gods,’ she added. ‘There had been a frantic clean-up to make everything look wonderful and people were very glad to be out and about enjoying the weather.’ The photos on this page reflect the day. Other gardens taking part in the trail that day were Burford in Cuckmere Road, 34 Chyngton Road, Cosy Cottage and Madehurst in Firle Road, and Lavender Cottage in Steyne Road. The wet and warm weather has made everything sprout upwards and outwards but, mused Allison, volunteers were having to fight a continuous battle against weeds. But we’ve taken the old gardening adage to heart: ‘When the weeds start growing it’s time to get sowing’. Outside, newly sown runner beans, courgettes and kale have appeared, while in other beds French beans and peas have been planted. Within the poly tunnel, the annual crop of tomatoes is growing strongly, so Phil was to be seen squatting to tie the healthy stems to the curly metal poles that were placed in the soil a few weeks ago.

We’re hoping that the rising temperatures and (hopefully only intermittent) rain will produce plenty to show our visitors. James’ hard work sprucing up the wildlife pond has also paid off, with clear water and grateful pond life, and a wonderful show of yellow irises in the margins. Among these, volunteers Ann and Gemma recently found the outer case of a newly hatched dragonfly. The adult had already flown so we can’t be sure of the species but we suspect it was a Broad-bodied Chaser. Of course, interested visitors have a habit of asking questions that not all volunteers can answer, particularly when it comes to identifying plants and advising in what conditions plants should be located. But, thanks to the tenacious efforts of Katie, separate areas within the garden have now been identified, each with its own name – such as the Rose bed or the Cuttings bed or the Pond – for each of which Brian, Abdul and Cameron have made easily visible signs. Laminated A4 sheets with a photograph and information about key details of plants within that area are attached to these signposts. We hope that with the help of these sheets, volunteers and visitors alike will be able to find the answer to many of their queries. This is a new project so we’d love to hear what you think and if there are any ways in which we can improve things. We’ve always seen the garden as a learning resource and we hope this is another step in that direction. More good news: tea breaks are back for our volunteers. Hooray! It’s beginning to feel like normal. Our garden, situated behind the Peace Garden off East Street, is now open from 9.30am until 12.30pm each Wednesday morning. Watch this space for Saturday openings when we will have produce for sale. Fingers crossed, we will also be opening as part of the Macmillan Trail on Saturday 24th July. seaford afternoon flower club

Our May competition was entitled ‘Basket - Weaving’ and once again we had some interesting interpretations from our members using lots of phormium leaves

We have been busy as a committee sending out a survey to our members to ask them whether they intend to renew their membership of the club, what suggestions they might have for future activities

and whether they have any concerns about safety in the light of covid. The replies we have received are mainly positive and most members are keen to resume our monthly meetings. In the light of this, we hope to be able to restart our meetings in July (15th) or August (19th). At the time of writing we are unsure as to whether or not July will be possible. We are planning a programme for the coming year, but will be starting off with social activities and workshops until we are sure of our membership. Most of us can’t wait to get together once again and to resume our mutual appreciation of flower arranging. For anyone who is interested and not a member of the club, please contact Mary on 01323 893899 or Sue on 01323 894848 for further details.

Seaford Natural History Society’s Seaford Seaside Bingo

If you have to take a Staycation this year, what better place to stay than Seaford, with time to explore the local environment? Start on the beach! A swim and an ice cream, then play Seaford Seaside Bingo. Compete with your friends and children to see who will be first

to complete a ‘line’ or a ‘house’ of beach treasure. Find out much more about the Seaford Natural History Society website (www.seafordnaturalhistory. org.uk) or facebook page. (https://www.facebook. com/groups/474856419572591).

Seaford Seaside Bingo.

Tick the box when you see it.

What have you seen? Mermaids Purse.

These are the egg cases of a fish. The big ones are probably from a Ray, the small ones from a Dogfish.

Seaweed.

This one is called Bladderwrack because it is covered in air sacks. You should be able to find other types.

A feather.

Black or white, from Crows or Seagulls. Feathers are made from the same stuff, keratin, as Mermaids Purses and fingernails!

42

Cockle Shell.

This is the shell of an edible shellfish, related to snails and whelks. It’s shell is made of two halves rather than in one piece. It is called a bivalve.

Cuttlefish Bone.

This is the skeleton of a Cuttlefish. They are fierce predators that come close to the shore to breed in spring.

Crab Shell. The crab might have been eaten or have moulted and left the old shell behind. There are different kinds of crab shell on the beach.

A plant growing on the beach.

Don’t damage or pick it! It is difficult to survive here as it is. This one is called Sea Beet. How many other types of plant can you find?

Slipper Limpet.

So called because it looks like a small shoe. This common animal first arrived in the UK from America about 150 years ago.

Whelk Egg Cases.

It looks like a lump of bubble wrap, but it’s not. Whelks lay large clumps of eggs on rocks in the sea, and some get washed up on the shores in stormy weather.

Litter!

Make sure you put yours in a bin or take it home. Plastic never rots and will stay on the shore or in the sea for ever.

A Banded Pebble.

The whole beach is made of pebbles. Try to find a pebble with more than 4 bands in it.

Dog Whelk Shell

The whelk lives on sandy sea beds below the low tide mark. It is the largest snail shell you are likely to find on our beaches

Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail Driftwood Fundraising Group, chaired and run by Seaford resident Geoff Stonebanks, has been organising the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail since 2012. Sadly, the event had to be cancelled in 2020, but plans are in hand for a scaled-down trail to take place over the weekend of the 24th and 25th July. There will be 14 gardens to see, with five of them in the town. If you want to venture out of Seaford, there is a further one in Telscombe, eight in Brighton and one in Alfriston. Three of the gardens in Brighton are new this year too. Geoff ’s work, fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support, through the trail and other activities in and around his own garden, Driftwood, in Seaford, has now enabled him to hand over more than £86,000 to the charity, all of which has gone to the Macmillan Horizon Centre in the city. All charities suffered greatly throughout the pandemic, Macmillan Cancer Support included, so why not get

out and support them while improving your own mental health and having a great day out in some wonderful gardens too – a perfect escape from the last 12 months. Dogs on leads allowed in all gardens too! You might have seen that Geoff recently raised over £800 for Macmillan after being persuaded by friends to pose in his garden for World Naked Gardening Day, back at the beginning of May. He decided to rise to the challenge with a strategically placed pot of flowers to cover his assets. This year, many of the gardens will be serving tea and cake and some have art and plants for sale too. Tickets are £8 for a day ticket on either Saturday or Sunday, with children free, purchased in the first garden visited. There will be an online facility to purchase day tickets via the web site too. Those who just want to visit a single garden will pay £3 at the garden gate. All the details can be found at www. macmillangardentrail.co.uk and telephone enquiries to Geoff on 01323 899296. Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Seaford Cares – On the Verge On the Verge of what?

As you may have heard, Seaford Community Partnership has been awarded project development funds from the National Lottery, towards the Ouse Valley Cares project. One of the key aims of the project is ‘protecting and regenerating habitats and green spaces’. Our green spaces and wildlife corridors also need to be accessible and enjoyable for the residents and visitors that use them. On the Verge is a volunteer-led project to connect green corridors across and between communities with the wider countryside and National Park. It is a partnership between Trees for Seaford who have been planting trees in Seaford for many years, and Seaford Environmental Alliance, who are an active hub for community projects in Seaford, which will help tackle the effects of climate change and the ecological emergency. We work with local partners including the South Downs National Park, local authorities, schools and ecologists, but we could not do this without the energy and enthusiasm from volunteers in our community. If you are interested in joining our informal group or working parties, or spreading the word as one of our green space ambassadors, do get in touch. No experience is needed! In the few months since we have formed, we have been as busy as the bees we are trying to attract! It started with lots of enthusiastic Zoom meetings, and a team of volunteers out surveying the verges and green spaces to build a ‘green’ map of Seaford. Thankfully we can also start to meet outside in the

50

green spaces we all love! A team effort also produced some attractive leaflets that we can give out to people interested in our project. Do ask us for some, if you would like to spread the word!

Verges

We are working with the council and contractors to change the mowing regimes on some verges and grass areas to create ‘mini meadows’. This will allow wild flowers to blossom, and set seed before they are cut, which will improve diversity. Areas agreed so far include areas in the Martello Fields, The Salts, The Covers, the Crouch and Princess Drive Green. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to survey what plants and wildlife come into our green spaces. We have also worked together to ensure that mowing does not take place too close to the precious young trees that have been planted in our town.

Nature Streets

We are working on two pilot “Nature Streets”. Nature Streets are a Sussex Wildlife Trust initiative to get people to work with their neighbours to create small, coordinated wildlife friendly features in their gardens and verges, so that flowers can flourish, pollinators and other insects can thrive,

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

Fantastic news too that a new community wildlife garden has developed at Beach Close after a visit by On the Verge volunteers. The residents have identified some wonderful plants that survive the salt winds, and this knowledge will be invaluable to share with the Sea Meadows project at the Martello Fields/ Pump Fields

Learning together

which in turn encourage birds and mammals into our gardens. Our first pilot Nature Street project is Saltwood Road (and nearby Millberg Road). Volunteers visited this site recently, partly for regular maintenance sessions of the trees there, but also to spread the word with neighbours about the Nature Streets project. A fun way of engaging with people was to use our On the Verge pebble creatures (created in a recent outdoor workshop) to show what creatures you might find in the longer grass. Our second Nature Street is Maurice Road, which is a very different private road positioned as a fantastic gateway right onto the coastal nature reserve of Seaford Head. We hope to run some roadshows later in the year at these locations, and spread awareness of what people can do to improve the diversity in their verges and gardens.

Supporting groups in Seaford

We are very happy to work with other local groups that want to improve diversity and encourage wildlife in their green spaces. Recently we were delighted to hear that our partner Annecy School had been successful in their application for a ‘Learning Through Landscapes’ Nature School grant. This gives the school £500 of equipment and training for staff, and to be used for their food growing project. We’re looking forward to our other projects at the school: planting a hedgerow, trees and creating a mini meadow. We were also very excited to support the plans of the Friends of Sutton Downs community group who are planning to plant community orchards, and meadows in the area round the playing fields of the Downs Leisure Centre site.

We’ve recently been attending some Tree Council webinars about hedgerows, are planning a plant identification gathering on the Martello Fields, and are holding a Buglife workshop to learn how to survey the pollinators and plants. It’s by no means all work – we want our volunteers to enjoy our green spaces, so walks, picnics, musical events and more, are all on our agenda too. Most importantly, make a note in your diary for the free Eco Fair on 1st August (12pm to 4pm) in the Salts where you will be able to get involved with some On the Verge activities such as wild flower seed sowing, bug pebble painting and sign making, not to mention meeting lots of other fantastic groups who are passionate about tackling climate change in Seaford. It’s important to remember that small steps all help. So if you’re not keen to convert your entire garden to wild flowers, perhaps you could just keep some areas of grass longer, or a patch of nettles in a corner? Do you have space for a pot of pollinator friendly cultivated plants? The more people who get involved, the more we can improve our green corridors for the whole town! Perhaps you could help build awareness by sharing your sightings and photographs of bees and butterflies. Look out for the Bumblebee Trust’s ‘Bees Needs’ week from 12th-18th July, and Butterfly Conservation’s ‘Great Butterfly hunt’ which starts on 16th July. Do let us know what you see! www.Seafuture.org/ontheverge #Seafordontheverge Photos opposite from top: Local roadside flowers in the verge; Trees for Seaford volunteers; Bee on green alkanet; Pebble creatures to raise awareness of the creatures that rely on flowering plants. Seaford Photographic Society We had around 30 people attending via Zoom for the Digital Image of the Year competition, judged by Keith Gibson. This is where members get the chance to enter their two best images from the past year. Congratulations to Jack Taylor for a well-deserved win with his timeless monochrome image ‘Peace in the Park’, taken in Paris (photo left). Second place went to Steve Hewitt, and Colin Mitchell took third. As this was the final competition of the season, the result also decided the ‘Photographer of the Year’, based on the total points scored from all the year’s competitions. There was a lot of excitement as we waited for Simon to calculate the final positions and Colin Mitchell took the trophy in the advanced group with 716 points. The battle for the next few places, however, was unbelievably close. Janice Hewitt was 2nd with 702 points, Chris Dawson 3rd with 701, Jack Taylor 4th with 700 and Simon Watkins 5th with 698! As expected, Anna-Marie Armstrong was Photographer of the Year in the standard Group with an impressive 739 points. Next we had an excellent talk by Brian Duckett with ‘10 Tips for Street Photography Success’. This was a very comprehensive lecture, covering the history and definition of the subject, with lots of examples and technical info including suggested camera settings. The penultimate meeting of the year was a members’ evening featuring two PowerPoint presentations, starting with our Chairman Colin Mitchell talking about his route to gaining the ‘LRPS’ photographic distinction. Club Secretary Chris Dawson then did a presentation on achieving his ‘CPAGB’ award for photographic merit. From the feedback we received, members found the evening very useful, particularly how the requirements from the two organisations are very different but how they both entail closely following the relevant advice.

54

We finished the season with an informal fun competition on the subject of ‘A Different Perspective’, encouraging members to look at everyday scenes from an unusual angle. The KCPA Exhibition is a regional competition open to all members of the 50 or so clubs in the Kent County Photographic Association and this year it was only for digital images, not prints. There were over 1,550 entries in total, of which only around 300 were accepted, so the standard is quite high. The exhibition is in the form of a slideshow which will be available for everybody to see on YouTube until 14th July. We don’t have the details yet but a link will be posted on our website www.seafordps.org. Several members of SPS had images accepted but special congratulations go to Kevin Smoker, Colin Mitchell and Chris Dawson who also had photos selected to go forward and represent the KCPA in the national PAGB Inter-Federation Competition. Chris Dawson also won a Highly Commended award for one of his (photo right: Honey Bee Drinking). We are now on our summer break and, all being well, the next meeting will be the start of the 2021/22 season on Friday 3rd September back at Seaford’s Constitutional Club. C RY P T GALLERY Exhibitions

The gallery is truly up and running now with a series of exhibitions to take us and you through July and into summer. Katy Oxborrow will be in the Flint Gallery until Saturday 3rd July with her new body of work, Silent Sentinels. Then, starting Friday 16th July and finishing on Sunday 25th July, we have a joint exhibition by mother and son, Lindy Dunbar from Seaford and Joseph Davey from Östersund in Sweden. They will be showing their drawings and paintings in a collaborative exhibition depicting figures and landscapes, including mixed media works and oil paintings. And last but not least, Rosemary Drysdale takes us through the end of the month and into August (Thursday 29th July until Tuesday 3rd August) with a collection of diverse work using mixed media. The Crypt is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the beach at 23 Church Street, Seaford, BN25 1HD so, when the sun gets a bit too much and you need to walk off the third ice cream of the day, take a stroll and visit us for a lovely cool break and some wonderful artwork.

deadline, we hadn’t chosen one yet. We were still debating the merits of one suggestion over another and, of course, these things take time! However, by the time you read this we (hopefully) would have reached a decision and announced it on our website, www.thecryptgallery.com, where you can go at any time, day or night, to read all things Crypt. You can also sign up to our newsletter via the website to be amongst the first to know what’s going on at the gallery.

Goodbye Chris L (sob) There were three Chrises (if that’s the right plural of a Chris) amongst the seven people who helped manage the Crypt, meaning that 43% of us had the same name. However, now only two out of six of us are called Chris, or 33% for percentage fans, as Chris Lau, our bookings supremo, is moving away to pastures new and a fantastic job in Scotland. This is very sad and he will be sorely missed by us all. Bye-bye Chris, thanks for doing a wonderful job and good luck with everything.

Havens Community Hub Celebrates Volunteers Havens Community Hub ended Volunteers Week (1st – 7th June) with an afternoon tea for their volunteers at The Flying Fish in Denton to celebrate the fantastic contributions they make to the local community. The Hub covers the coastal stretch between Saltdean and Seaford, and surrounding towns and villages. Havens Community Hub has a variety of volunteers that help the community in different ways. They include food waste prevention champions, volunteer drivers, and social engagement volunteers. They were all awarded certificates and badges that were handed out by the Deputy Mayor of Newhaven, Councillor George Taylor. The Havens Community Hub projects include preventing up to one ton of still edible surplus supermarket produce from reaching landfill every week (Havens Food Cooperative), providing activity and friendship through day centres for older people (Havens Happy Clubs), and volunteer drivers who help those who are unable to use public transport to reach medical and other daily living appointments (Havens Community Cars). Havens Community Hub aims to meet unmet community need and have also done so through smaller projects, such as helping with the Census Support Service and the school holiday booster bag scheme.

are priceless. Through the generous giving of their time, they are making a real difference to their community – and their passion for helping others always shines through. I cannot thank them enough. Seaford u3a News Seaford u3a is gearing up to provide members with the varied programme it offered before being interrupted by the pandemic. All of the activities will be available from September, although it is planned to start the coffee morning, talks on Tibet and a pub lunch sooner if Covid rules allow. To mark the resumption of everyday life members will be invited to a free buffet party. This above all should make members feel that the isolation and strangeness of their lives is coming to an end. Watch the members’ Update email for further details of when and where this will be. The first activity to get back to some semblance of normality will be the coffee mornings. These have been taking place by Zoom during the pandemic but as from June it is hoped they can be face-to-face in several groups of six persons at the u3a’s old stamping ground of the Con Club. The first will be on 30th June starting at 10.00 and non-members will be welcome as before. There will be a modest charge for coffee and nibbles with some catch-up chat. The pub lunches will be the next activity to start again at the White Lion. These were much enjoyed by the members who attended though places will again have to be limited. They are likely to move to a Friday once a month, and it is hoped that the first one will be in July. Groups meeting in members’ houses are a big part of the u3a’s character which fulfill the ethos of life-long learning in a friendly setting. There will be twenty-four groups on offer to start with. Following the way u3a works there are no tutors for the groups – they are member-led by an enthusiastic volunteer and involve member-participation to make them work. For the language and musical instrument groups there is a little more teaching involved. There is an exciting range of subjects. There are book groups including a non-fiction group; art groups, both painting and academic as in history of art and Islamic Art; there are games – Bridge, Canasta, Scrabble;

language groups – French and Italian; music lovers can enjoy opera appreciation or learn to play the recorder or the ukulele; those interested in science can join groups exploring climate change or general science and technology; cooks can pursue a rare opportunity to see demonstrations of Polish food; current affairs, history, Shakespeare and tea tasting are there to be experienced and finally after all that learning there is a walking group which is expressed to be ‘a friendly group of able walkers’. That’s not all! Tea parties will be starting again, where members can hear a diverse range of outside speakers before they have time to talk amongst themselves over some tea-time snacks and a cup of tea. There is a wideranging programme of talks planned at the Downs given by members themselves. There is a lot to look forward to and subscriptions are due on 1st August. For more information about Seaford u3a (particularly pre-Covid) see the website www.u3asites.org. uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack. Photo: Pub lunch old style (pre-Covid).

What is your favourite film? The Greatest Story Ever Told. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Quality time spent with my family. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Pointing out loudly to hotel staff in Thailand there was a snake in the swimming pool, which they then laboriously caught, and when pulled out it proved to be a dead leaf! Which living person do you most admire? Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford and why? The View for meals and the excellent panorama over Seaford Bay and Seaford Head. What makes you sad? Intolerance. How do you relax? Walking along the coast and on the South Downs. What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Better to try and risk failing than not to try for fear of failing. What is the first line of your favourite poem? It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea....Edgar Allan Poe. What is your favourite journey? Back home to Seaford. How would you spend a million pounds? Towards the research and funding of an anti-malarial vaccine. What is your most memorable learning experience? My first and only parachute jump – learning that some of the things friends encourage you to do for charity are more demanding than they first appear. What is your greatest extravagance? International travel. What is your greatest fear? Not to have spent my life significantly or purposefully. What is your favourite smell? Coffee percolating. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Do to others as you would want them to do to you. What would your motto be? Don’t put off to tomorrow something you could do today. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jnr. What or who is the greatest love in your life? I have been married for 49 years so of course it’s my wife Ann. Christian faith however has shaped who I am, so love of and love from God is the greatest love anyone can know. Anything else you may like to include? I have learnt that volunteers and volunteering are important in any community. Also that the environment and climate is ours to protect or to destroy.

Refill is ready for Summer In the lead up to World Refill Day we were delighted to welcome some new members to the Refill scheme. In Seaford Papachinos has joined to include their outlets at The Sailing Club, the Salts Café and the Martello Tower. As well as offering water refills you can get your own resusable coffee cup filled (and get a discount as well) so please remember to take one when you go for your next walk on the Prom. Meanwhile in Town you may have seen that Morrisons has a self service tap which will offer water refills and you can use your reusable coffee cup there as well. It is really important that we try to cut all this single use takeaway cups and packaging from our lives…so many do not take them home but throw them from cars onto our verges. It was incredible the amount of rubbish Lewes District council workers collected back in May from the A27 and litter pick groups have been clearing the A26 and Seaford bends as well. This should not have to be done so we will keep on sharing the message. Please take it home or preferably take a resuable!

If you want a Chilly’s bottle or food container which makes a great gift, you can buy one of these yourself which keep your lunch and drinks hot or cold from refill.org.uk/buy-abottle/ and Chilly’s make a £10 donation to the Refill campaign. The

1st August will see us take our message out in the community again at A Greener Seaford Community Climate & Eco Fair in the Salts, so do come and say hello. There will be a competition to win a Chillys bottle as well. Do let us know via email if you run or know of a business that wants to join the scheme or now offers refills for coffee etc. Don’t forget you can download the Refill app to get the location maps to find Refill points https://www.refill.org.uk/get-the-refill-app/ and also register your business and others if you have their permission. Glow-worm

It’s not what you look like but what’s inside that counts. The glow-worm knows this. First off we need to get one thing straight – she’s not a worm. Glow-worms are beetles, except she doesn’t look much like a beetle – more like a squashed woodlouse. She may not look like much but she knows that she has a certain something that is more alluring than all the brightly coloured feathers, petals, fur and scales that others use in their desperate cries for attention. When the colours of the day start to fade she undertakes a dignified climb to the top of a blade of grass. She positions herself carefully, turns on her love-light and shines.

When scientists explain this phenomenon they use words like ‘bioluminescence’ and discuss the ‘oxidation of luciferin’ – but these boffins and their fancy talk ain’t fooling me. I know magic when I see it and to look upon glow-worms shining on a warm summer’s evening is just that – magical. Of course the glow-worm is not glowing for our benefit – there’s a special someone she’s trying to attract. I’ve been referring to the glow-worm as ‘she’ because the female is the one who does the glowing. The male looks like a different species altogether and is glow-worm by association. Much smaller and beetle-like in appearance, he has bulging eyes which are protected under a see-through rim on his tough beetle-body – imagine a tiny Marty Feldman in a suit of armour and a sun visor and you’re not too far off. On warm evenings he flies over the grass looking down for a female’s glow. When her signal registers on his radar he dives, crashing to the ground near her. He then looks up through his visor to locate the female hanging over him, before scuttling the short distance to his new partner. This amazing little animal has inspired poets through the centuries. William Blake’s glow-worm lit the path for the ‘Troubled wilderd and forlorn’, while in the poem ‘Among All Lovely Things My Love Had Been’ William Wordsworth woos his sweetheart with a glow-worm. But surely the most epic verse ever written about a glow-worm is this anonymous poem: ‘I wish I were a glow-worm, a glow-worm’s never glum, ‘cos how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?’ Michael Blencowe of the Sussex Wildlife Trust Photos from top: Male Glow-worm; female Glow-worm by Derek Middleton, Sussex Wildlife Trust©

Greenhavens Network

Greenhavens Network members had a brilliant day on their First Aid training course. Thanks to funding from @LewesFund we were able get groups trained up so that they can safely work in the communities, running their projects and making a difference. We were able to fund places for Wilder Gardens, Seaford Natural History Society, Haven Community Hub, Haven Community Drivers and Friends of Riverside Park. Thank you to our awesome treasurer Pam Perry for organising this three times over now thanks to the pandemic! Greenhavens does its best behind the scenes to support community groups to carry on doing what they do best. If you are interested in supporting us with fundraising and organising please get in touch – many hands make light work! Email: greenhavens@yahoo.com.

A First for Seaford’s Property Market After last year’s first lockdown, we quickly realised the way people bought homes had changed forever. And we knew that how we worked had to adapt to meet the rapidly changing needs of buyers and sellers. This was the main reason that last year we invested in a 3D, 360-degree camera and mapping software that allows people to take detailed virtual tours of homes they are interested in – from the comfort of their sofa. It’s a very fancy piece of kit, but we see virtual tours as being a ‘must-have’ in the future as buyers and tenants become more tech-savvy. And we’re the first and only agents in Seaford currently using it.

Here’s how it works: We visit your property, and using the special camera and computer software, we map out the home with a video tour which you can access and control from your device, be that a PC, tablet, or smartphone.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

it’s more a case of grabbing people’s online attention. And our virtual tours do precisely that. As a result, we’ve noticed the number of online viewings for a property increase dramatically with a virtual tour that tells a much more detailed property story than a slideshow of photos. If people are really interested in your property, they’ll then request a second viewing. This saves you time and hassle, and means those looking to buy your property are serious. Thanks for reading.

Why it works:

Stephen and Andrew

Creating a video tour that the viewer controls means you reduce in-person viewings. At first glance, that might seem odd as the old way of thinking was you need the maximum number of people viewing a property to create interest and demand.

PS: Words don’t do our new technology justice, so if you want to see how one of our virtual tours looks, email us at info@newberrytully.co.uk and we’ll send you a link to a featured property

This ‘get them through the doors quickly’ approach was the case before the lockdowns. But Covid-19 and the unstoppable rise of the internet has driven all of us in a digital direction that little bit more. Now

First, a big thank you to all those people who have continued to support us through the pandemic. By the end of this academic year our therapists will have counselled a total of 75 individual students from four Seaford schools, plus provided therapy to two groups of children thought to benefit from this approach over one-to-one counselling. We badly need local donations to enable us to meet administration costs that cannot come out of grants. We have been trying to raise public awareness by such efforts as taking up Morrison’s kind offer of an in-store table to display publicity material. Thank you Morrisons. We are also working on the resumption of our programme of events and hope to restart the popular quizzes at The Old Plough as soon as possible. By the time you have read this we should have taken part in Seaford Rotary Club’s Rainbow Walk fundraiser along the seafront. In the meantime, we are delighted to receive a £10,000 grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation, a charity that was established in 1958 by Willard Garfield Weston, a businessman who moved to the UK in 1932 and went on to found Associated British Foods. The foundation was endowed by family-owned shares in the business. His son Garry became one of the UK’s best regarded philanthropists. Its 60th birthday in 2018 saw it giving £11m to local communities. We are also extremely grateful to the Sussex Community Foundation which has awarded us a much-needed £9,000. Founder and first chairman, the late Duke of Richmond and Gordon, felt that the establishment of a community foundation would highlight the smaller charities and community groups often overlooked when local people and companies thought about giving to charity. ‘It is, in my view, a scandal that there are areas in Sussex which are in the bottom 20% of national measures

of social deprivation,’ he said. ‘At the same time, when local people or companies think of giving to charity they tend to think of large national bodies, because little is known about the small community groups on their doorsteps. Sussex Community Foundation has been set up to bridge this gap and to make it easy for local people and companies to give to local communities. The foundation can make a significant difference to local quality of life. This is about local communities working together for the welfare of all for many years to come.’ There is evidence to show that if school-age children are treated without delay they stand a good chance of recovering from anxiety and depression. Schoolsbased The Youth Counselling Project works in our local community to help young people to become happier members of society by receiving counselling when they need it, rather than having to wait so long for treatment that it may be too late to avoid developing lifelong mental health problems. Please help us to help them by visiting www.tycp.org.uk.

HOME SWEET HOME Buying a property should be exciting. Not exhausting. All too often, the prospect of dealing with the ‘conveyancing bit’ of moving home can be a little bit daunting. At Barwells Solicitors, we believe it can be better than that. We think the whole process should be made as straightforward and painless as possible. You should be kept right up to date with what’s going on, in everyday language, rather than ‘lawyerspeak’. And you should be kept informed of the cost all the way through the process. In fact we don’t just think it we do it.

Old Town Hall Community Tea Room The Old Town Hall Community Tea Room in South Street opened in May after the lockdown and was very pleased to welcome back many of it’s regular customers. Everybody had a story to tell, some more harrowing than others and some with funny moments, stories were swapped between tables which epitomizes the friendly nature of a community tea room.

Please Note

Due to current COVID restrictions, some events may be postponed or cancelled at short notice. Please check with the organisation beforehand.

New customers also came and promised to tell their friends and to come again, this is a sign that we are not as well known as we would like to be, probably due to more people moving to the town or just visiting. We are situated at the bottom of South Street on the right hand side, 50 yards past the police station. Our staff are all volunteers who serve tea, coffee and biscuits and are happy to have a chat with visitors. The tea room is open Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm (closed Tuesday) and 10am to 12 noon on Saturday.

Summer heat, hydration and dementia… Typically, by the time you are reading this, those brief days of shorts and t-shirts; sun-cream and ice-cream may seem just a distant memory. I sincerely hope you’re not currently sheltering from thunderstorms or popping on a jumper but even if you are, now seems the best time to discuss how to take care of vulnerable individuals during heatwaves. Those (glorious) summer days where the temperature rises can have a serious impact on dementia sufferers, especially where they have lost access to the self-care mechanisms that the rest of us may take for granted. Where dementia impacts the memory, the normal automatic response to a brain message telling you you’re thirsty may be forgotten or set aside, leading to an increased risk of dehydration, discomfort and a deterioration in general wellbeing across a relatively short period of time. Once the thermometer climbs, at Clifden House we ensure that water and cool drinks are readily available throughout the day. Little sips taken regularly are more effective in maintaining hydration than attempting to coax individuals to drink large glasses all in one.

dehydration include headaches or dizziness and excessive tiredness. Equally, increased confusion beyond the normal indicators of dementia. Finally, has the individual been for a wee recently? If they haven’t needed to go, they may need to up their liquid intake. Access to outdoor spaces is one of the joys of the summer, but these should also allow access to shaded areas, sun umbrellas and summerhouses that offer safe and enjoyable time in the garden, but reduce the risk of sunburn, sunstroke and dehydration. Midday is not the best time to be outside. The cool of the morning, with that lovely feeling of the warmth to come, or the late afternoon, where there is a welcome cool breeze and the intense heat has gone out of the day, ensure exposure to the best of the sunshine but reduce the negative risks. Of course, you’re now finishing this article in your wellies, woollen socks and knitted mittens because you live in the UK and summer finished on Wednesday, but hopefully we can make the next time safer and more enjoyable for all of us.

Summer days are also the perfect time for ice lollies for both residents and their carers in the home, so we look for ways to provide high water content options such as fruit, jellies, ice-creams and even (cooled) soups to ensure that liquid is being ingested in a timely manner.

Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Whilst we audit food and fluids taken by our residents, in your own home it may be useful to set a timer to remind someone with dementia to take a drink or to move out of the heat of the sun into the shade. Typical signs that may indicate

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club It’s great to be getting back to ‘normal’! For the first time since the Autumn we were able to hold our monthly meeting at the Constitutional Club, all socially distanced with masks and good ventilation of course, but masks were optional whilst we were sitting down. Most of our membership turned up and we had a very enjoyable evening. We started by ratifying official business at an ‘Extraordinary AGM.’ and then the members presented items on the theme of ‘J, K, & L’.You never know what is going to turn up, which is part of the fun of these evenings. The range of topics was very broad and included a 1908 Japanese letter sheet posted on board a French Paquebot ship, Klaipeda, plus items on Central Lithuania, Chinese Junk ships, The Statue of Liberty, postcards of Kingsmead School and a few letters written by Tufton Beamish (Lewes MP) when he was a student there, GVI stamps of Kenya, Jugoslavia (now Yugoslavia), Katakana, Luxembourg, Jolly Jack Tar (ephemera, stamps postal history and postcards of New Zealand shipping), King & Country Killing Zones (mainly ephemera, stamps and postal history from Egypt and the South African Boer War) and finally ‘Job 9’ which was the code name at the start of WW2 for Tristan da

Neighbourhood Watch Roundup

Save the Date!

We feel like shouting it from the rooftops and right now it looks pretty certain that our September Birthday Party Expo will be in real life, in person, full colour, with cake! The date to save is Wednesday the 22nd of September from 6pm to 8pm. As usual, this will be held in the lower hall at the Seaford Baptist Church. We are busy organising speakers and exhibits, and will send out more details closer to the time so keep your eye on your email, and if you haven’t already subscribed to our mailing list, please do at www.sandbnhw.org. If you would like to exhibit, please email publicity@sandbnhw.co.uk . Because it is our 35th birthday year, we get to boast a little about what Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch has achieved, and just what it is we do to support safety and good neighbourliness in our lovely town. We are one of the very first registered schemes in the UK, registered as an association and charity in 1986. Far from being stuffy and bureaucratic, our NHW success stems from our core ethos of Great Neighbourliness and being relevant. Far from curtain twitching curmudgeons, we are Proudly, Kindly, Seaford and we do things our own way. We consider all Seaford residents automatic members of the NHW, and our work as a committee is for the benefit of all residents. You can join NHW on a national level at www.ourwatch.org.uk which is totally free and automatically registers you with our scheme. You can also become a registered member of the Association and your subs contribution will help to keep us ticking along. Subs are ridiculously affordable at £3 per household per year or £2 per household per year for a senior household. Joining is easy at www. sandbnhw.org/join

Some of the things we do include supporting local community endeavours that build resilience and pride in our town, draw people together and strengthen our community spirit. For example, our support of the local food banks, making sure the most vulnerable are not left hungry or forced into petty crime to stay fed. We have also assisted in the refurbishment of the Seaford War Memorial. Through Lockdown, we supported a small sewing club, which surprised all of us and exploded into a 3,000 strong army who sewed over a quarter of a million wearables to support our NHS, all from home. That’s 3,000 neighbours who came together as an enterprise industry and are now a strong independent not-for-profit group – long may their good works continue. We are also the pioneers of the No Cold Calling initiative and the first town in the country to implement a No Cold Calling zone. We are also one of the very few schemes in the country to be wholly self-funded just through our subs. Our Great Neighbours projects started in 2017, and that theme has been picked up by NHW on a national level. But most importantly, we still boast one of the lowest crime rates in the country, making Seaford a safe place to live, work and visit. Let’s keep being Great Neighbours – it’s working!

Scams are Still Rife...

With reports from all the high street banks and online selling sites warning us to never share any banking details or our pins and passwords with anyone over the phone, email or text message, please be hyper-vigilant as scammers become ever more cunning and resourceful. The most common scams at the moment are: Text messages from your ‘bank’ asking you to verify a transaction that you absolutely know you didn’t make – this is a scam. The link takes you to a false web page and the false web page is designed to grift your bank details so that the scammer can empty your bank

Seaford Rotary Award of Rotary Certificate of Appreciation to Seahaven Storehouse

On Thursday 3rd June, Seaford Rotary President Martin McGill presented Dawn Woodgate and her Seahaven Storehouse team with a Rotary Certificate of Appreciation. Rotarians Mike Ogilvie, Arif Essaji and Ken Holt were also present. The award was given to recognise the work carried out by Seahaven Storehouse to help the vulnerable and needy with food and provisions over several years, but also recognising that the role of Seahaven Storehouse became far more important to the community with the onset of the pandemic and the lockdowns. Traditionally towards the end of each Rotary year (July – June), consideration is given to whether a particular individual should be given an award of the Paul Harris Fellowship, a Rotary award named after the founder of Rotary, given to recognise outstanding service to Rotary or to the community. Dawn Woodgate has always said that it is the Storehouse Team as a whole that enables help to be provided to those most in need. So, for the first time, Seaford Rotary awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to an organisation to recognise the unstinting work in the community by Seahaven Storehouse, before and during the lockdowns. Dawn Woodgate set up Seahaven Storehouse about 9 years ago. Earlier this year the Storehouse was helping over 100 households in Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven. Before the pandemic, households used to come to collect their food parcels but during the pandemic, the food parcels have been delivered to these households by volunteer drivers. To run the foodbank costs approximately £700 - £800 per week.

104

At the height of the pandemic the cost exceeded £1,000 per week.

June Boot, Craft and Produce Fair

Before long, the Martello Field was invaded by stallholders to set up and sell their wares. Regretfully, the limits placed on the number of stallholders due to social distancing requirements, resulted in 10 potential stallholders being refused entry. By 9am, the Martello Field was occupied by the stallholders, potential customers who followed the one-way system in place around the arena, investigating the numerous opportunities for a bargain. Stallholders included those selling bespoke clocks, cards of local views and several selling plants – there seemed to be countless tomato plants, as well as standard roses, hanging baskets and bedding plants – whilst other stalls offered some less common wares such as fishing rods, a guitar, a barometer, model yachts, sewing machines, pushchairs, and a kitchen sink! The next Seaford Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair will be held on 4th July. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members. For more information contact us on www.seafordrotary.org.uk/contact.php. CONCENTUS IS COMING BACK! Coming back from their involuntary withdrawal from public appearance Hurray! Concentus is all set to resume live rehearsals, all together, for their Christmas Concerts from Monday 6th September (Covid allowing of course). However, Concentus has been far from idle since March 2020. They have always been a friendly caring choir and the Committee were quick off the mark organising ways of keeping in touch with members to ensure that every one had help at hand if they needed it and known people to chat to. A telephone cascade operated, email newsletters went out and before very long these were giving information about proposed Zoom rehearsals. Individual help was offered with setting up Zoom, music for the hoped-for Summer Concerts 2020 was emailed and practice CDs were sent out. And on-line rehearsals

Clock Restoration Service

were up and running and continued up to the normal ‘end of term’ this summer. Obviously there were no concerts but at Christmas a very limited number of singers were allowed to sing together in a couple of supermarket car-parks – socially distanced and wearing masks! Zoom rehearsals continued, practising music for the next hoped-for Concerts and Concentus initiated a Singing From Home Choir on Zoom to bring all the acknowledged advantages of singing together – albeit on Zoom – to local people. Many of the people who joined this choir have already transferred to the main choir and are eagerly awaiting the start of live rehearsals (fingers crossed!) The intention is to put the real rehearsals on Zoom too so that everyone can keep up to date even if they are not ready yet to attend in person, or are feeling under the weather. Providing that all goes well with the lifting of Covid restrictions, Concentus has set a date for the annual Summer Barbecue, which this year will be a bring-yourown picnic – for obvious reasons. With the same proviso the choir will sing at the Hippodrome in September, and will delightedly offer two Christmas Concerts. Up to Lockdown Concentus was holding rehearsals at the JPK Project in Old Town. The work to convert their buildings has been going well and they no longer have room to host Concentus. The Committee has led a search for premises which will fulfil Concentus’ many needs and has found an ideal site – right back to where the embryo choir started in 2005! Willingdon Community School in Broad Road, BN20 9QX fulfils all of the choir’s requirements, including spacious, well ventilated rehearsal space and a large parking area. Saturday 11th December will see Concentus presenting their Christmas Concert at Seaford Baptist Church, and Saturday 18th will see them singing at St Saviour’s in Eastbourne – all other things being equal of course!

More information will appear later; please go to the choir website to find out more about Concentus and how to join. New members are always warmly welcomed; contact Lou (Assistant Musical Director) on 07799 116653 for information about rehearsal times etc. www.concentus-sings.com

Seaford Young Mayor & Deputy Young Mayor Following presentations from prospective candidates, elections were recently held at Seaford Head School for a new Young Mayor and Deputy Young Mayor. This resulted in Joseph Lacy being elected as the new Young Mayor and Erin Franklin as the new Deputy Young Mayor for 2021-2022. The competition was high, and there were eight candidates for the roles! The Assistant Head Teacher at Seaford Head School, Dr Wallace led the elections and was delighted that so many exceptional candidates stood. Joseph’s reasons for standing were because he would like to help make a difference in the local area, he plans to represent the young people of Seaford and hopes to raise money for a local charity, he will be setting out his plans for his term over the next few weeks.

the Town Forum Awards Presentations on the Town Council’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=76dnqtFVzQU&t=1054s (at 13:40 mins) Chanel says: ‘My time as The Young Mayor of Seaford has finally come to an end. I would like to thank everyone at Seaford Town Council and all of my supporters who have helped me raise money for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance. It has been a very trying year, but we’ve managed to raise an incredible amount of money, £1,564! I am so grateful to you all. ‘I’ve had such a fabulous experience, first being Deputy Young Mayor to James Jenkins and then becoming Young Mayor of Seaford. I have met lots of lovely people and learnt so much in the last two years that will be so valuable to me in the future. I’d like to thank you all again for being so wonderful and making my experience the best experience!’ Keep posted on Young Mayor updates and news by following the Young Mayor’s Facebook page – @seafordyoungmayor and/or by signing up to the Town Council’s regular e-bulletin.

Joseph and Erin will take over the reins from Chanel Pritchard (2020-2021 Young Mayor) and James Jenkins (2020-2021 Deputy Young Mayor, and previously 20192020 Young Mayor). Their appointment was formally announced at the Seaford Town Council Annual Meeting on 20th May 2021. The outgoing Young Mayor, Chanel Pritchard sent her congratulations, adding, ‘I would like to wish the new Young Mayor and their Deputy all the best. You will be amazing!’ Chanel’s first year as Deputy Young Mayor 2019-2020 enabled her to attend civic events and meet lots of inspiring people. However, Chanel was unfortunately met by a very challenging year as Young Mayor during 2020-2021 due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Despite this, she managed to raise an amazing £1,564 for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance by holding a variety of raffles and organising a sponsored bike ride. Chanel thanks her Deputy, James Jenkins for his support, the Mayor of Seaford, Town Council officers, her sponsors, and especially her mum and dad for helping her to balance her busy schedule and supporting her during the year. a new kitchenette will mean that coffee and tea are easily accessible!

If you’ve walked by Clinton Place recently you will know work at Cross Way Church is still on-going. However, the end is in sight! At first glance you’d be forgiven for wondering what has changed (apart from the disappearance of the railings). Answer: lots! A new window replaces the original front doors with scenes of Seaford’s heritage interwoven with biblical illustration. This window provides a tantalising view into the revamped Sanctuary. To the side, a new entrance to both the Sanctuary and Blatchington Hall allows easy access to a light and airy foyer. And that’s just for starters... The Sanctuary with its new windows and textiles will provide visitors and worshippers with much to contemplate. Visitors can take their time exploring the themes on display, and on a more practical note,

The newly refurbished Blatchington Hall will be available for the usual clubs and meetings – something we’ve all missed during this pandemic. New groups will also find a warm welcome awaits. Please email: crosswaychurchbookings@gmail.com for more information. Until the sanctuary can re-open for regular Sunday worship, our friends at Christ Church, Lewes continue to Zoom the morning service for our benefit. You are welcome to join us and more information is available if you email: crosswaychurchseaford@gmail.com We look forward to inviting friends old and new to Cross Way Church, very soon. Brighton Male Voice Choir Would you like to learn how to sing in a choir, or do you need to build up your singing confidence? The benefits of singing are well known, so why not come along and give it a try, with Brighton Male Voice Choir. We are a social, non-religious, community choir and we welcome men over the age of 18 who enjoy singing, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There are no auditions, and the ability to read music is not essential, as you will “pick this up” as you sing along with us to some well-known tunes. We do though ask you to sing in tune! Brighton Male Voice Choir was formed in 1926, during the years following the depression. The original members were mainly recruited from the Welsh mining community who came to Brighton to work on the new Sea Defences, between Black Rock and Rottingdean. The choir has been singing in many forms since. After the war, the choir re-formed with weekly rehearsals held above Rosslyn’s Store in the London Road, Brighton, an old established draper’s shop, now long gone, and the present site of what used to be the Woolworth’s store.

Weekly rehearsals are hopefully due to recommence on Thursday 24th June, from 7.30pm, at Woodingdean Methodist Church, but this date is of course subject to confirmation. You can see (and hear) more about the choir, what we do and what we’ve done, by visiting our website www. brightonmalevoicechoir.co.uk. Then, if you register your interest by email to our membership secretary, Jeff White, at ewanjeff.white@ gmail.com he will keep you notified of any changes. The Mayor of Brighton and Hove Cllr. Alan Robins will be unveiling a Blue Plaque in honor of the founder of St John’s School & College: Sister Jane Borradaile 1825 – 1918. Jane Borradaile (1825 – 1918) founded a home for deprived children from London and what has now evolved into one of southern England’s major providers of special education, residential care and therapy for young people with Autism and other Complex Needs.

Board: https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/a-history-ofst-johns-brighton-9781784423476/

Jane Borradaile’s work was driven by her strong Anglican faith and the philanthropic ethos of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Simon Smith’s book describes St John’s as: ‘a remarkable and enduring part of Brighton’s educational landscape’.

St John’s is now a secular special school and college, but Jane Borradaile’s values and caring spirit remain a central part of St John’s to this very day.

Simon Charleton BEM, who was awarded a British Empire Medal in last year’s Birthday Honours for the work of St John’s all through the pandemic, said:

Further information can be found in The History of St John’s by Simon Smith who is now Chair of the Trustee

‘Jane Borradaile’s work lives on today in the outstanding care, therapy and education the staff at St John’s provide – day in, day out. She provides a great role model to our young people of a strong and determined woman determined to achieve her ambitions.

Seaford Little Theatre A few changes have had to be made to our planned re-opening this summer. You all will be only too familiar with the uncertainty surrounding the unlocking of restrictions. This affects how many seats we can sell and what measures need to be in place so that we keep you (and ourselves) safe. It’s difficult to look into the future but, as I write this in June, we think it will benefit everyone if we delay Mixed Doubles by a month. This should give us more time to make definite provision for opening night which will now be scheduled for Friday 20th August and not Friday 23rd July. Tickets will be on sale three weeks before opening night and you’ll be able to find out how to book by visiting our website: www.seafordlittletheatre.co.uk. This change of plan means that the musical revue we were to present at the end of August will have to be postponed until next year. Rest assured that when we do re-open you will be safe in our little theatre. We can’t wait to see you all again and look forward to August, which isn’t so very far away!
