Designated in 2004, the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve (RMTP, for its acronym in Spanish) protects one of the thickest stands of Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) in Puerto Rico. Healthy Elkhorn coral can help protect the coastline from erosion and its branches form creates an important coastal habitat for many species, including commercially important species. However, the Elkhorn coral in the Caribbean is at risk of extinction. Since 1980, Elkhorn coral coverage has decreased up to 90% throughout the Caribbean. Let's help keep Tres Palmas lively!
